Abstract Background Malaria still claims substantial lives of individuals in Tanzania. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spray (IRS) are used as major malaria vector control tools. These tools are facing great challenges from the rapid escalating insecticide resistance in malaria vector populations. This review presents the information on the dynamics and monitoring of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors in mainland Tanzania since 1997. The information is important to policy-makers and other vector control stakeholders to reflect and formulate new resistance management plans in the country. Methods Reviewed articles on susceptibility and mechanisms of resistance in malaria vectors to insecticides across mainland Tanzania were systematically searched from the following databases: PubMed, Google scholar, HINARI and AGORA. The inclusion criteria were articles published between 2000 and 2017, reporting susceptibility of malaria vectors to insecticides, mechanisms of resistance in the mainland Tanzania, involving field collected adult mosquitoes, and mosquitoes raised from the field collected larvae. Exclusion criteria were articles reporting insecticide resistance in larval bio-assays, laboratory strains, and unpublished data. Reviewed information include year of study, malaria vectors, insecticides, and study sites. This information was entered in the excel sheet and analysed. Results A total of 30 articles met the selection criteria. The rapid increase of insecticide resistance in the malaria vectors across the country was reported since year 2006 onwards. Insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) was detected in at least one compound in each class of all recommended insecticide classes. However, the Anopheles funestus s.l. is highly resistant to pyrethroids and DDT. Knockdown resistance (kdr) mechanism in An. gambiae s.l. is widely studied in the country. Biochemical resistance by detoxification enzymes (P450s, NSE and GSTs) in An. gambiae s.l. was also recorded. Numerous P450s genes associated with metabolic resistance were over transcribed in An. gambiae s.l. collected from agricultural areas. However, no study has reported mechanisms of insecticide resistance in the An. funestus s.l. in the country. Conclusion This review has shown the dynamics and monitoring of insecticide resistance in malaria vector populations across mainland Tanzanian. This highlights the need for devising improved control approaches of the malaria vectors in the country.

Development of renal tumors is a main complication of acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD). ACKD associated renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common subtype of RCC occurring in ACKD and is a recently established entity. ACKD associated RCC occurs exclusively in patients with ACKD and hence the name. The tumor is characterized by cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, cribriform/sieve-like architecture, and extensive intratumoral oxalate crystals. We report, a case of ACKD associated RCC in a 35-year‑old female with end-stage renal disease with ACKD on maintenance hemodialysis, who underwent left nephrectomy for massive hematuria and review the literature.

Viral infection of the CNS can result in encephalitis and acute seizures, increasing the risk for later-life epilepsy. We have previously characterized a novel animal model of temporal lobe epilepsy that recapitulates key sequela in the development of epilepsy following viral infection. C57BL/6 J mice inoculated with the Daniel's strain of Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV; 3 × 105 PFU, i.c.) display acute limbic seizures that secondarily generalize. A majority of acutely seized animals develop spontaneous seizures weeks to months later. As part of our investigation, we sought to assess behavioral comorbidity following TMEV inoculation. Anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, and certain psychoses are diagnosed in persons with epilepsy at rates far more frequent than in the general population. We used a battery of behavioral tests to assess anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, and general health in acutely seized animals inoculated with TMEV and compared behavioral outcomes against age-matched controls receiving a sham injection. We determined that TMEV-seized animals are less likely to move through the exposed center of an open field and are less likely to enter into the lighted half of a light/dark box; both behaviors may be indicative of anxiety-like behavior. TMEV-seized animals also display early and persistent reductions in novel object exploration during novel object place tasks and do not improve in their ability to find a hidden escape platform in Morris water maze testing, indicative of impairment in episodic and spatial memory, respectively. Cresyl violet staining at 35 and 250 days after injection reveals bilateral reductions in hippocampal area, with extensive sclerosis of CA1 evident bilaterally along the rostral–caudal axis. Early and persistent behavioral changes in the TMEV model provide surrogate markers for assessing disease progression as well as endpoints in screening for the efficacy of novel compounds to manage both seizure burden and comorbid conditions.

Since androgen signaling plays a pivotal role in the proliferation and metastasis of prostate cancer, androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) or castration therapy is considered the backbone of treatment for newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer. However, almost all men experience disease progression on ADT to a state known as metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), which continues to be driven by intratumoral androgen synthesis or androgen receptor signaling. Hence, the extragonadal ablation of androgen synthesis from pregnane precursors holds much promise. An inhibitor of cytochrome P450 17α−hydroxy/17,20-lyase (CYP17) enzymes, abiraterone acetate, has already been approved for men with mCRPC. Newer CYP17 inhibitors continue to be developed which are either more selective or have concomitant inhibitory actions on AR signaling. These include VT-464, orteronel, and galeterone. Herein, we focus on the molecular mechanism of action, efficacy, latest evidence, and clinical potential of CYP17 inhibitors in prostate cancer.

Amelogenesis impertecta (Al) is a diverse collection of inherited diseases that exhibit qualitative or quantitative tooth enamel defects in the absence of systemic manifestations. Also known by varied names, such as hereditary enamel dysplasia, hereditary brown opalescent teeth, this defect is entirely ectodermal, since mesodermal components of the teeth are basically normal. This article details a case of Al along with complete review which presents in his twin siblings with clinical, radiological and histopathological report.

A study was conducted to assess the prevalence of psychosocial disorders in patients with TMD, and to establish correlation between these, and symptoms and physical signs of TMD. Thirty patients were included in the study. TMD history and TMJ examination findings were recorded. Subsequently psychosocial assessment was carried out. Eighteen patients were in psychiatric morbid (PM) group and 12 were in psychiatric nonmorbid (PNM) group. Symptoms and signs of TMD were compared between PM and PNM group. Strong association was evident between presence of psychiatric morbidity and certain parameters viz. pain duration, VAS, bruxism, mouth opening.

We report a case of Lipoblastoma in a 4-year-old boy along with a brief review of literature. Lipoblastomas are rare benign tumors that arise from embryonic white fat. These lesions exhibit a wide range of cellular differentiation and maturation. A range of differentiation from unvacuolated spindle cells within the myxoid matrix to increasingly larger and more vacuolated cells to the mature adipocyte, can be noted at high power. These lesions are typically asymptomatic and most cases are diagnosed within the first decade of life. This case report tries to describe the importance of differentiating Lipoblastoma from myxoid Liposarcoma. Lipoblastomas when followed, gradually mature, with the disappearance of the spindle and myxoid elements.

Inferior morphology of perovskite films and suppressed hole extraction restricts the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a PEDOT:PSS hole transporting layer (HTL). In this work, poly-TPD is used to modify the surface of PEDOT:PSS films in PSC. The presence of hydrophobic poly-TPD decreases the nucleation sites, and as a result, perovskite films with larger grains are obtained. Improved energy level alignment in the presence of poly-TPD results in enhanced hole extraction from the perovskite layer to the HTL. The improved morphology and charge extraction resulted in improved photovoltaic performance. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs was increased from 13.6% to 16.1% with the incorporation of poly-TPD. Also, the shelf life of the PSCs has exhibited considerable improvement due to the presence of hydrophobic poly-TPD and fewer number of grain boundaries. After 66 days, the PSC with poly-TPD maintained 96% of its initial PCE, whereas the PCE of the control device degraded to 72% of its initial value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have embedded the concept norm with the proposed notion Neutrosophic multifuzzy Subrings. This conception was manipulated with Neutrosophic multi fuzzy ideals and level sets. Furthermore, some propositions and theorems related to them were explored. Eventually, direct product and homomorphic properties of Neutrosophic multifuzzy Subrings were derived.
