Computer Science - Emerging Technologies - Abstract
The ocean ecology is badly impacted by large-scale oil spills, plastic waste, and chemical pollution, which destroy ecosystems and endanger marine life. Acknowledging the detrimental effects of oil spills on ecosystems, our research aims to establish the foundation for creative methods to lessen their impact. With an emphasis on the containment and prediction of oil spills, this research investigates the potential of acoustic levitation as a cutting-edge technique for environmental cleanup. Effectively separating and eliminating pollutants without causing additional ecological harm is a major issue for traditional oil spill cleanup techniques. Acoustic levitation provides a non-invasive, accurate, and effective alternative by using sound waves to precisely and subtly separate oil droplets from water in controlled environments. This proposed approach can reduce the negative effects on the environment and increase the efficacy of cleanup efforts. The findings have been examined and assessed by proof of concept experiments with oil droplets, identifying the relationship between the intensity of ultrasonic pressure and the proportion of oil droplets collected.

Assurance cases offer a structured way to present arguments and evidence for certification of systems where safety and security are critical. However, creating and evaluating these assurance cases can be complex and challenging, even for systems of moderate complexity. Therefore, there is a growing need to develop new automation methods for these tasks. While most existing assurance case tools focus on automating structural aspects, they lack the ability to fully assess the semantic coherence and correctness of the assurance arguments. In prior work, we introduced the Assurance 2.0 framework that prioritizes the reasoning process, evidence utilization, and explicit delineation of counter-claims (defeaters) and counter-evidence. In this paper, we present our approach to enhancing Assurance 2.0 with semantic rule-based analysis capabilities using common-sense reasoning and answer set programming solvers, specifically s(CASP). By employing these analysis techniques, we examine the unique semantic aspects of assurance cases, such as logical consistency, adequacy, indefeasibility, etc. The application of these analyses provides both system developers and evaluators with increased confidence about the assurance case.

- Abstract
This study aimed to understand how mindfulness meditation affects young people by examining its impact on self-regulation, happiness, emotional awareness, and school performance among two groups of school children. A 10-week mindfulness program was conducted by a meditation expert for 552 children aged 4-8 (Group 1) and 287 children aged 9-11 (Group 2). Results for the 4-8 years group (Group 1) showed meditation predicted an increase in happiness (R[superscript 2] = 0.003, p < 0.001) and self-reported school performance (R[superscript 2] = 0.005, p < 0.001) and a decrease in emotional (R[superscript 2] = 0.017, p < 0.001) and behavioral difficulties (R[superscript 2] = 0.009, p < 0.001); however, the effect sizes were small. In the 9-11 years group (Group 2), meditation predicted an increase in emotional awareness (R[superscript 2] = 0.02, p < 0.001), and a decrease in emotional (R[superscript 2] = 0.014, p < 0.001) and behavioral difficulties (R[superscript 2] = 0.009, p < 0.001) as measured by scores from baseline to postintervention. For Group 2, there was no significant change in happiness over the 10 weeks. The findings support incorporating mindfulness meditation in schools, noting significant enhancements in self-regulation with just 5 min of daily practice.

Mathematics - Group Theory - Abstract
We show that a profinite group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are metabelian, is either virtually pro-$p$ or virtually soluble of derived length at most 4. We furthermore show that a prosoluble group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are soluble of bounded derived length, is either soluble or virtually pro-$p$., Comment: 9 pages

Mathematics - Group Theory - Abstract
We consider analogues of Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki (GGS-)groups acting on trees of growing degree; the so-called growing GGS-groups. These groups are not just infinite and do not possess the congruence subgroup property, but many of them are branch and have the $p$-congruence subgroup property, for a prime $p$. Among them, we find groups with maximal subgroups only of finite index, and with infinitely many such maximal subgroups. These give the first examples of finitely generated branch groups with infinitely many finite-index maximal subgroups. Additionally, we prove that congruence quotients of growing GGS-groups associated to a defining vector of zero sum give rise to Beauville groups., Comment: 28 pages

Computer Science - Computation and Language ,Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Mathematics - Group Theory - Abstract
Let $G$ be a $p$-adic analytic pro-$p$ group of dimension $d$. We produce an approximate series which descends regularly in strata and whose terms deviate from the lower $p$-series in a uniformly bounded way. This brings to light a new set of rational invariants, canonically associated to $G$, that yield the aforementioned uniform bound and that restrict the possible values for the Hausdorff dimensions of closed subgroups of $G$ with respect to the lower $p$-series. In particular, the Hausdorff spectrum of $G$ with respect to the lower $p$-series is discrete and consists of at most $2^d$ rational numbers. Furthermore, we show that, if $G$ is a countably based pro-$p$ group with an open subgroup mapping onto the free abelian pro-$p$ group $\mathbb{Z}_p \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, then for every prescribed finite set $\{0,1\} \subseteq X \subseteq [0,1]$ there is a filtration series $\mathcal{S}$ such that the Hausdorff spectrum of $G$, with respect to $\mathcal{S}$, is $X$. In particular, the cardinality of the Hausdorff spectrum of $G$, with respect to $\mathcal{S}$, is unbounded, as $\mathcal{S}$ runs through all filtration series of $G$ that result in a finite Hausdorff spectrum. Finally, we establish that finitely generated non-abelian direct products $G$ of free pro-$p$ groups have full Hausdorff spectrum $[0,1]$ with respect to the lower $p$-series., Comment: 35 pages; adapts material from arXiv:1901.03101v2 which did not appear in a peer-reviewed journal

Computer Science - Human-Computer Interaction - Abstract
A standardized control system called Metaverse Extended Reality Portal (MERP) is presented as a solution to the issues with conventional VR eyewear. The MERP system improves user awareness of the physical world while offering an immersive 3D view of the metaverse by using a shouldermounted projector to display a Heads-Up Display (HUD) in a designated Metaverse Experience Room. To provide natural and secure interaction inside the metaverse, a compass module and gyroscope integration enable accurate mapping of real-world motions to avatar actions. Through user tests and research, the MERP system shows that it may reduce mishaps brought on by poor spatial awareness, offering an improved metaverse experience and laying the groundwork for future developments in virtual reality technology. MERP, which is compared with existing Virtual Reality (VR) glasses used to traverse the metaverse, is projected to become a seamless, novel and better alternative. Existing VR headsets and AR glasses have well-known drawbacks that making them ineffective for prolonged usage as it causes harm to the eyes.

Smart cities have revolutionized urban living by incorporating sophisticated technologies to optimize various aspects of urban infrastructure, such as transportation systems. Effective traffic management is a crucial component of smart cities, as it has a direct impact on the quality of life of residents and tourists. Utilizing deep radial basis function (RBF) networks, this paper describes a novel strategy for enhancing traffic intelligence in smart cities. Traditional methods of traffic analysis frequently rely on simplistic models that are incapable of capturing the intricate patterns and dynamics of urban traffic systems. Deep learning techniques, such as deep RBF networks, have the potential to extract valuable insights from traffic data and enable more precise predictions and decisions. In this paper, we propose an RBF based method for enhancing smart city traffic intelligence. Deep RBF networks combine the adaptability and generalization capabilities of deep learning with the discriminative capability of radial basis functions. The proposed method can effectively learn intricate relationships and nonlinear patterns in traffic data by leveraging the hierarchical structure of deep neural networks. The deep RBF model can learn to predict traffic conditions, identify congestion patterns, and make informed recommendations for optimizing traffic management strategies by incorporating these rich and diverse data To evaluate the efficacy of our proposed method, extensive experiments and comparisons with real world traffic datasets from a smart city environment were conducted. In terms of prediction accuracy and efficiency, the results demonstrate that the deep RBF based approach outperforms conventional traffic analysis methods. Smart city traffic intelligence is enhanced by the model capacity to capture nonlinear relationships and manage large scale data sets., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, and 3 Tables

PURPOSE: This study sought to identify the sources of differential performance and misclassification error among local (Indian) and external (non-Indian) corneal specialists in identifying bacterial and fungal keratitis based on corneal photography. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of survey data assessing the ability of corneal specialists to identify acute bacterial versus fungal keratitis by using corneal photography. One-hundred images of 100 eyes from 100 patients with acute bacterial or fungal keratitis in South India were previously presented to an international cohort of cornea specialists for interpretation over the span of April to July 2021. Each expert provided a predicted probability that the ulcer was either bacterial or fungal. Using these data, we performed multivariable linear regression to identify factors predictive of expert performance, accounting for primary practice location and surrogate measures to infer local fungal ulcer prevalence, including locality, latitude, and dew point. In addition, Brier score decomposition was used to determine experts reliability (calibration) and resolution (boldness) and were compared between local (Indian) and external (non-Indian) experts. RESULTS: Sixty-six experts from 16 countries participated. Indian practice location was the only independently significant predictor of performance in multivariable linear regression. Resolution among Indian experts was significantly better (0.08) than among non-Indian experts (0.01; P < 0.001), indicating greater confidence in their predictions. There was no significant difference in reliability between the two groups ( P = 0.40). CONCLUSION: Local cornea experts outperformed their international counterparts independent of regional variability in tropical risk factors for fungal keratitis. This may be explained by regional characteristics of infectious ulcers with which local corneal specialists are familiar.

Coupling of power-to-gas processes with underground gas storage could effectively allow surplus electricity to be stored for later use. Depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs could be used as stores, but practical experience of hydrogen storage in such sites is limited. Here we present data from a field trial that stored 119,353 m3 of hydrogen admixed to natural gas in a depleted hydrocarbon reservoir. After 285 days, hydrogen recovery was 84.3%, indicating the process’s technical feasibility. Additionally, we report that microbes mediated hydrogen conversion to methane. In laboratory experiments studying mesocosms that mimic real reservoirs, hydrogen and carbon dioxide were converted to methane (0.26 mmol l−1 h−1 evolution rate) reproducibly over 14 cycles in 357 days. This rate theoretically allows 114,648 m3 of methane per year to be produced in the test reservoir (equivalent to ~1.08 GWh). Our research demonstrates the efficiency of hydrogen storage and the importance of geo-methanation in depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs.

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

This paper describes our system for addressing SMM4H 2023 Shared Task 2 on "Classification of sentiment associated with therapies (aspect-oriented)". In our work, we adopt an approach based on Natural language inference (NLI) to formulate this task as a sentence pair classification problem, and train transformer models to predict sentiment associated with a therapy on a given text. Our best model achieved 75.22\% F1-score which was 11\% (4\%) more than the mean (median) score of all teams' submissions., Comment: Accepted in Workshop on Social Media Mining for Health 2023 (#SMM4H)

Mathematics - Number Theory ,11T06, 11T55 - Abstract
For all finite fields of $q$ elements where $q\equiv1\pmod4$ we have constructed permutation polynomials which have order 2 as permutations, and have 3 terms, or 4 terms as polynomials. Explicit formulas for their coefficients are given in terms of the primitive elements of the field. We also give polynomials providing involutions with larger number of terms but coefficients will be conveniently only two possible values. Our procedure gives at least $(q-1)/4$ trinomials, and $(q-1)/2$ quadrinomials, all yielding involutions with unique fixed points over a field of order $q$. Equal number of involutions with exactly $(q+1)/2$ fixed-points are provided as quadrinomials., Comment: 10 pages; comments welccome

Mathematics - Group Theory - Abstract
We investigate invariable generation among key examples of branch groups. In particular, we prove that all generating sets of the torsion Grigorchuk groups, of the branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups and of the torsion multi-EGS groups (which are natural generalisations of the Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups) are invariable generating sets. Furthermore, for the first Grigorchuk group and the torsion Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki groups, every finitely generated subgroup has a finite invariable generating set. We also show that a branch Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki group is almost $\frac32$-generated, that the diameter of its generating subgraph $\Delta(G)$ is 2 and its total domination number is 2. Some of our results apply to groups for which every maximal subgroup is normal. This class, known as $\mathcal{MN}$, includes all nilpotent groups., Comment: 11 pages, v2: minor modifications

Computer Science - Computation and Language ,Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
The goal of automated summarization techniques (Paice, 1990; Kupiec et al, 1995) is to condense text by focusing on the most critical information. Generative large language models (LLMs) have shown to be robust summarizers, yet traditional metrics struggle to capture resulting performance (Goyal et al, 2022) in more powerful LLMs. In safety-critical domains such as medicine, more rigorous evaluation is required, especially given the potential for LLMs to omit important information in the resulting summary. We propose MED-OMIT, a new omission benchmark for medical summarization. Given a doctor-patient conversation and a generated summary, MED-OMIT categorizes the chat into a set of facts and identifies which are omitted from the summary. We further propose to determine fact importance by simulating the impact of each fact on a downstream clinical task: differential diagnosis (DDx) generation. MED-OMIT leverages LLM prompt-based approaches which categorize the importance of facts and cluster them as supporting or negating evidence to the diagnosis. We evaluate MED-OMIT on a publicly-released dataset of patient-doctor conversations and find that MED-OMIT captures omissions better than alternative metrics.
