Based on data from a supplementary survey of the German Socio-Economic Panel on the Covid-19 pandemic (SOEP-CoV), this article examines differences in the implementation of various person-related and organizational occupational safety and health measures during the Covid-19 pandemic and their relationship to individual health. We first provide a brief outline of social inequalities in workplace-related health risks before and during the pandemic and describe the implementation of different occupational health and infection protection measures during the pandemic. We argue that the infection and occupational health measures were not only successful in mitigating the risk of infection, but that their compliance may also contribute to a safety climate in the workplace, which in turn may be associated with better employee health. Accordingly, the analyses show that the mere number of organizational or person-related measures taken is not directly related to health, but perceived compliance with the measures significantly correlates with employee health (satisfaction). The OLS results also reveal social stratification in the occupational safety and health measures taken.

With the increasing digital transformation, work tasks are changing—in some cases, significantly. Our study addresses the question of whether the established criteria for work design are still sufficient or if they should get updated and additional criteria become necessary in the context of digitalization. In a multistage consensus process involving interdisciplinary groups of experts, we have identified specific criteria for the humane design of work in a world increasingly permeated by digitalized work tools. Starting with an expert workshop using a combined nominal group/focus group technique, followed by a real-time Delphi study, a content analysis and a five-stage peer comment process, we detected 13 criteria and 38 design guidelines for human-centered work in digital transformation. Mapping these with established criteria, it became apparent that some established criteria have experienced a new dynamic because of the digital transformation. For other criteria, a need for digitization-sensitive design is discernible. In addition, criteria have emerged whose necessity is rooted in the digital transformation. A diffusion and stronger interconnection of the various levels of the work system in connection with the digital transformation of work is apparent.

BACKGROUND As employees age, their physical and mental abilities decline and work ability decreases, enhancing the risk for long-term sick leave or even premature retirement. However, the relative impact of biological and environmental determinants on work ability with increasing age is poorly understood in terms of their complexity. OBJECTIVE Previous research has shown relationships between work ability and job and individual resources, as well as specific demographic and lifestyle-related variables. However, other potentially important predictors of work ability remain unexplored, such as personality traits and biological determinants, including cardiovascular, metabolic, immunological, and cognitive abilities or psychosocial factors. Our aim was to systematically evaluate a wide range of factors to extract the most crucial predictors of low and high work ability across the working life span. METHODS As part of the Dortmund Vital Study, 494 participants from different occupational sectors, aged between 20 and 69 years, completed the Work Ability Index (WAI) assessing employee’s mental and physical resources. A total of 30 sociodemographic variables were grouped into 4 categories (social relationships, nutrition and stimulants, education and lifestyle, and work related), and 80 biological and environmental variables were grouped into 8 domains (anthropometric, cardiovascular, metabolic, immunologic, personality, cognitive, stress related, and quality of life) and have been related to the WAI. RESULTS Using the analyses, we extracted important sociodemographic factors influencing work ability, such as education, social activities, or sleep quality, and identified age-dependent and age-independent determinants of work ability. Regression models explained up to 52% of the WAI variance. Negative predictors of work ability were chronological and immunological age, immunological inefficiency, BMI, neuroticism, psychosocial stress, emotional exhaustion, demands from work, daily cognitive failures, subclinical depression, and burnout symptoms. Positive predictors were maximum heart rate during ergometry, normal blood pressure, hemoglobin and monocyte concentration, weekly physical activity, commitment to the company, pressure to succeed, and good quality of life. CONCLUSIONS The identified biological and environmental risk factors allowed us to evaluate work ability in its complexity. Policy makers, employers, and occupational safety and health personnel should consider the modifiable risk factors we identified to promote healthy aging at work through focused physical, dietary, cognitive, and stress-reduced preventive programs, in addition to well-balanced working conditions. This may also increase the quality of life, commitment to the job, and motivation to succeed, which are important factors to maintain or even enhance work ability in the aging workforce and to prevent early retirement. Vocational rehabilitation (VR) aims to help people with disabilities to return to the labour market. Though, there is not much evidence on its effectiveness.We explore the effect of vocational training programmes in VR and the VR status itself on employment outcomes.Using two samples from administrative data by the German Federal Employment Agency, we applied propensity score matching. We followed rehabilitants commencing VR in 2009/2010 (N = 7,905) for four years (comparison I) and general training participants with and without VR status completing training in 2012/2013 (N = 21,020) for one year (comparison II). For harmonisation purposes, we only considered individuals aged between 25 and 40 and excluded those in employment at the beginning of VR or training.Concerning the effect of training in VR (comparison I), we observe a lock-in effect during training (p 0.001) due to an involvement in VR; after training, participants are more likely to obtain unsubsidised employment (0.05, p 0.05) than non-participants, but there is no statistically significant income difference after four years. Regarding the effect of the VR status (comparison II), rehabilitants are more likely to take up (un-)subsidised employment (0.04, p 0.01; 0.02, p 0.001) after training, exhibit longer employment durations (19 days, p 0.001) and achieve higher average incomes (2,414 euro/year, p 0.001) compared to non-rehabilitants.Training participation helps to improve employment participation of rehabilitants. However, a longer observation period is recommended. Furthermore, the VR status itself leads to more sustainable and better-paid employment. This is due to more comprehensive support and longer-term subsidised employment opportunities.

Given the rapid digitalization of the world of work, this editorial discusses possible relations to job quality and shows which factors of job quality have been given priority so far. Further, it places the contributions to the special issue in the discourse of digitalization and suggests further research. We argue that digitalization does not affect all groups of employees equally and that it can have varying consequences in different (work) contexts. We are pleased about the increasing attention paid to this topic in empirical social research. The multifaceted contributions to the special issue confirm that digitalization is not a fixed construct and that it contains many different facets. Therefore, we encourage researchers to expand the empirical analysis of the relationship between digitalization and quality of work and employment in the future, to transfer studies (if possible) into the longitudinal section, to study new phenomena, and to classify them in the discourse, as well as to consider possible moderators in the future.

Computers can substitute for many tasks currently performed by humans and are likely to change occupations in the near future. However, it is not likely that entire occupations will disappear. In this context, little attention has been paid to possible impacts of digital transformation on aspects of work quality. It would be desirable for changes to ease occupations with high work exposure. In this article, we assume that digital technologies may replace physically demanding jobs mainly performed by men, but not psychosocially demanding jobs mainly performed by women. Thus, the question arises whether social inequality between men and women may increase in the course of digital transformation. Using large-scale administrative and survey data from Germany, we analyse the relationship between digital transformation and work exposure for male- and female-dominated occupations. We measure the degree of digital transformation by occupation-specific substitution potential, that is the extent to which occupational tasks can be replaced by computers or computer-controlled machines. The results imply that digital technologies could relieve men of physically demanding jobs. However, we cannot find any evidence that digital technologies have already caused employment to decline in occupations with physical work exposure.

ZusammenfassungInteraktionsarbeit, verstanden als Arbeit an und mit Menschen, hat in den letzten Jahren einen erheblichen Bedeutungszuwachs erfahren. Während verschiedene Berufsfelder mit interaktiven Tätigkeitsanteilen bereits empirisch untersucht und unterschiedliche Konzepte zu Interaktionsarbeit vorgelegt wurden, sind relevante Fragen der Wirkung von Interaktionsarbeit auf Sicherheit und Gesundheit bei der Arbeit bislang weniger betrachtet worden. Zur menschengerechten Gestaltung von Interaktionsarbeit erscheint aus arbeitswissenschaftlicher Perspektive die Entwicklung einer übergeordneten Systematik zu den Anforderungen und Folgen von Interaktionsarbeit sowie ein Überblick über das vorliegende, empirisch gesicherte Gestaltungswissen sinnvoll.Das Ziel des nachfolgenden Beitrages besteht darin, die Forschung zur Interaktionsarbeit im Kontext von Sicherheit und Gesundheit bei der Arbeit zu reflektieren sowie die Möglichkeiten einer konzeptionellen Einordnung unterschiedlicher spezifischer Formen der Interaktionsarbeit und die sich daraus ergebenden Gestaltungserfordernisse zu diskutieren.Praktische Relevanz Für die gesundheits- und persönlichkeitsförderliche Gestaltung von Interaktionsarbeit sind Erkenntnisse über die spezifischen Arbeitsbedingungen und Anforderungen sowie deren Auswirkungen für die Beschäftigten zentral. Dieser Beitrag schlägt einen Ansatz für eine branchen- und berufsübergreifende Klassifikation von Merkmalen der Arbeit vor, die für die menschengerechte Gestaltung interaktiver Tätigkeiten relevant sind und zeigt die dafür erforderlichen weiteren Schritte auf.

Background Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. Hitherto, the magnitude of sleep debt, social jetlag, and Locomotor Inactivity During Sleep (LIDS) in different shift systems is unknown. Methods Here, we investigated the impact of five different shift rosters on sleep in 129 industrial workers from Germany. Permanent night work with multiple shift systems with and without night shifts and with different shift lengths were compared. Wrist-activity was monitored over 28 days revealing sleep on- and offsets as well as LIDS as proxy for sleep quality. Overall, 3,865 sleep bouts comprising 22,310 hours of sleep were examined. Results The mean daily age-adjusted sleep duration (including naps) was 6:43h and did not differ between shift workers of different rosters. However, sleep duration on workdays was particularly low in rotational shift systems with 12h-shifts (5:00h), while overall sleep debt was highest. Shift workers showed a median absolute social jetlag of 3:03h, which differed considerably between shift types and rosters (p Conclusions Shift work leads to partial sleep deprivation, which particularly affects workers in 12h-shifts and permanent night shifts. Working these shifts resulted in higher sleep debts and larger absolute social jetlag whereas sleep quality was especially reduced in permanent night shift workers compared with shift workers of other rosters.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the workload and has affected physical and mental health of many employees. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) has proven useful as a marker for retrospective assessment of stress in epidemiological studies and was measured here in non-healthcare night-shift workers with standard shifts (8-h shifts) and extended shifts (12-h shifts) before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Results showed a twofold increase in HCC among shift workers during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with previous measurements. Subjectively reported measures of psychosomatic stress were not found to be reliable predictors of HCC. No statistically significant HCC differences were found between rosters. Working 12-h shifts does not appear to be an additional stressor in the already demanding COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper studies employee health in the context of digital transformation in Germany. While most studies have focused on mental health, we focus on physical health. Using pooled survey data, we estimate how an increased use of computers in the workplace relates to subjective health and work-related health complaints. We find that employees using the computer frequently report better subjective health and a significantly lower prevalence of back pain and physical exhaustion. After controlling for physical work exposures, the health-promoting effect of computer use is much smaller, suggesting that high computer use is associated with a less physically demanding work environment, which in turn relates to better (physical) health outcomes. While digital transformation seems to foster physical health, there are hints that mental health could deteriorate. Thus, the focus of occupational health is shifting towards the prevention of mental stress.

Zusammenfassung Flexible Arbeitszeitmodelle gewinnen in der modernen Arbeitswelt zunehmend an Bedeutung. Vielfach wird in Frage gestellt, ob bestehende Regelungen des Arbeitszeitgesetzes den Wandel der Arbeitswelt noch angemessen berücksichtigen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde auch eine Diskussion über die gesetzliche Mindestruhezeit von elf Stunden zwischen zwei Arbeitstagen angestoßen. Dieser Beitrag zeigt auf Basis der BAuA-Arbeitszeitbefragung 2017 (n = 6136 Vollzeitbeschäftigte), dass die Verkürzung von Ruhezeiten, über alle Berufe hinweg, negativ mit psychosomatischen Beschwerden und Work-Life-Balance assoziiert ist. Zudem kann gezeigt werden, dass der vielfach bestätigte negative Zusammenhang zwischen täglichen Arbeitszeiten bzw. Überstunden mit Gesundheit und Work-Life-Balance zum Teil auf verkürzte Ruhezeiten zurückzuführen ist. Aus den Analysen wird deutlich, dass bereits eine gelegentliche Unterschreitung der elfstündigen Mindestruhezeit mit Risiken für Gesundheit und einer schlechteren Work-Life-Balance einhergeht. Praktische Relevanz: Verkürzte Ruhezeiten zeigen negative Zusammenhänge zu Gesundheit und Work-Life-Balance. Die gesetzlichen Ruhezeiten stellen aus Sicht des Arbeitsschutzes daher einen notwendigen Mindeststandard dar, dessen Einhaltung für eine gesunde Arbeitszeitgestaltung für alle Tätigkeiten maßgeblich ist. Eine Flexibilisierung der Arbeitszeit, in Form einer Absenkung der Mindestruhezeit, ist aus arbeitswissenschaftlicher Sicht abzulehnen. Darüber hinaus sollten die bestehenden Ausnahmeregelungen kritisch reflektiert werden. Bei der Gestaltung und Bewertung von Arbeitszeiten sollte neben der Länge der Arbeitszeit stets auch die Ruhezeit berücksichtigt werden. Eine Unterschreitung der Mindestruhezeit sollte in jedem Fall vermieden werden.

Zusammenfassung Wahrend der SARS-CoV-2-Pandemie hat der Arbeitsschutz eine grose Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Viele Betriebe waren durch neue Herausforderungen im Infektions- und Gesundheitsschutz gefordert, einen Beitrag zur Eindammung der Krise zu leisten. Der Beitrag beschreibt die Herausforderungen vor dem Hintergrund ungleicher Ausgangsbedingungen. Vor der Krise war der Arbeitsschutz in den Betrieben abhangig von Branche und Betriebsgrose unterschiedlich entwickelt, z. B. im Hinblick auf die Umsetzung von Gefahrdungsbeurteilungen. Auch auf die gestiegenen Anforderungen wahrend der Pandemie haben Betriebe unterschiedlich reagiert. Fur viele waren die Masnahmen des Arbeitsschutzes von einer grosen wirtschaftlichen Unsicherheit begleitet und haben nicht zuletzt deshalb an Bedeutung gewonnen. Inwiefern der Arbeitsschutz als bedeutendes Thema in den Betrieben erhalten bleibt, ist ungewiss. Deutlich wurden aber mogliche kunftige Herausforderungen fur den betrieblichen Arbeitsschutz, v. a. bei der in der Krise zugenommenen Arbeit von zu Hause (Homeoffice).

Digitisation is increasingly finding its way into the world of work. Although it is unlikely that human work will be replaced by computers and machines in the near future, it can be assumed that human work will change. These changes are less expected at the sectoral and occupational level and more at the activity level. This article first discusses which requirements are, in general, gaining importance as digitalisation progresses. It is thereby assumed that technological change entails similar requirements as organisational restructuring processes. Subsequently, the requirements employees are increasingly confronted with are presented for the field of nursing, caring and curing. The analyses are based on an employment survey jointly carried out by the German Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), which allows a comparison of the years 2006, 2012 and 2018.The activities are characterised both by a high work intensity and by physically stressful activities. Although it is generally assumed that there will be a decline in physical stress, this has not yet been observed in the activity investigated. Job autonomy, as a psychological resource to cope with different work demands, is also considered in the analyses, with ambiguous results. Altogether, it can be stated that the field of activity of nursing, caring and healing is characterized by comparatively stable work demands. The design of good working conditions in the nursing, care and medical professions should take into account existing challenges as well as new factors that are gaining importance as a result of increasing digitalisation.Die Digitalisierung hält zunehmend Einzug in die Arbeitswelt. Obwohl nicht damit zu rechnen ist, dass menschliche Arbeit zeitnah durch Computer und Maschinen ersetzt wird, ist dennoch anzunehmen, dass sich menschliche Arbeit verändert. Diese Veränderungen werden weniger auf Branchen- und Berufsebene erwartet und vielmehr auf der Ebene der Tätigkeiten.Der vorliegende Beitrag diskutiert zunächst allgemein, welche Anforderungen im Zuge der fortschreitenden Digitalisierung an Bedeutung gewinnen. Hierbei wird davon ausgegangen, dass der technologische Wandel ähnliche Anforderungen nach sich zieht wie organisationale Restrukturierungsprozesse. Anschließend wird für das Tätigkeitsfeld „Pflegen, Betreuen, Heilen“ dargestellt, mit welchen Anforderungen Beschäftigte mit einem hohen Anteil dieser Tätigkeiten konfrontiert sind. Als Datengrundlage dient die Erwerbstätigenbefragung, die gemeinsam vom Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (BIBB) und der Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin (BAuA) durchgeführt wird und einen Vergleich der Jahre 2006, 2012 und 2018 ermöglicht.Die Tätigkeiten des Pflegens, Betreuens und Heilens sind durch eine hohe Arbeitsintensität und durch körperlich belastende Tätigkeiten geprägt. Obwohl allgemein von einem Rückgang körperlicher Belastungen ausgegangen wird, ist dies in dem untersuchten Tätigkeitsbereich bislang nicht zu beobachten. Bezüglich der Ressource des Handlungsspielraums zeigen sich keine eindeutigen Ergebnisse. Insgesamt lässt sich festhalten, dass sich die betrachteten Arbeitsanforderungen des Tätigkeitsfeldes des Pflegens, Betreuens und Heilens über die Zeit als vergleichsweise stabil erweisen. Die Gestaltung guter Arbeitsbedingungen in Pflege‑, Betreuungs- und Heilberufen sollte sowohl bestehende Herausforderungen als auch neue und durch die zunehmende Digitalisierung an Bedeutung gewinnende Faktoren berücksichtigen.

Beschaftigte haben das Recht auf sicher und menschengerecht gestaltete Arbeitsbedingungen und dabei insbesondere auch das Recht auf eine Begrenzung der Hochstarbeitszeit, auf tagliche und wochentliche Ruhezeiten sowie auf bezahlten Jahresurlaub (vgl. Europaische Union 2000). Die rechtlichen Leitplanken der Arbeitszeitgestaltung gibt in Deutschland das Arbeitszeitgesetz (ArbZG) vor. Es legt Hochstgrenzen fur die tagliche Arbeitszeit, Mindestruhezeiten, Pausenzeiten und Vorschriften zur Gestaltung von Nacht- und Schichtarbeit fest, lasst jedoch in zahlreichen Punkten auch Ausnahmen und abweichende Regelungen in Form von Tarifvertragen, Betriebs- oder Dienstvereinbarungen sowie in bestimmten Berufen und Branchen und bei Notfallen zu. Das Arbeitszeitgesetz setzt damit die EU-Arbeitszeitrichtlinie (Richtlinie 93/104/EG) um. Weitere gesetzliche Regelungen finden sich u. a. im Arbeitsschutzgesetz, Teilzeit- und Befristungsgesetz, Mutterschutzgesetz und Jugendarbeitsschutzgesetz. Auch auf tarifvertraglicher und betrieblicher Ebene konnen arbeitszeitliche Masnahmen fur eine menschengerechte Gestaltung der Arbeit sowie eine gerechte Verteilung von Belastungen beitragen. So konnen menschengerecht gestaltete Arbeitszeiten einerseits Mehrbelastung ausgleichen, wie etwa die verkurzte Vollzeit oder die tarifliche Freistellungszeit im Tarifabschluss der Metall- und Elektroindustrie 2018, andererseits aber auch mehr Freiraume bei der Gestaltung der eigenen Arbeitszeit schaffen, wie z. B. Gleitzeit- oder Telearbeitsregelungen. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund von arbeitsbedingtem Stress und zunehmenden psychischen Belastungen werden immer wieder auch Forderungen nach kurzeren Wochen- bzw. Tagesarbeitszeiten (wie etwa der 4-Tage-Woche oder dem 5-Stunden-Tag) gestellt. Langere Erholungszeiten und kurzere Arbeitszeiten werden hierbei als gerechter Ausgleich fur zunehmend komplexe und verdichtete Arbeitsanforderungen betrachtet. Zwar hat die menschengerechte Gestaltung von Arbeit und Arbeitszeit im Sinne des Arbeitsschutzgesetzes das Ziel, gesundheits- und personlichkeitsfordernde Arbeitsbedingungen fur alle zu schaffen. Gleichzeitig sind jedoch arbeitszeitliche Anforderungen und Ressourcen nicht uber alle Beschaftigtengruppen gleich verteilt. Wahrend die einen auf eine Vielzahl an Flexibilitatsressourcen zuruckgreifen konnen, sind andere von Flexibilitatsanforderungen und ungunstigen Arbeitszeitlagen betroffen (vgl. Backhaus et al. 2018). Die konkrete Gestaltung der Arbeitszeit kann mogliche strukturelle Ungleichheiten allerdings zumindest teilweise ausgleichen.

Excessive working hours have negative consequences for employees’ health. Looking deeper into this problem, this article examines how employers’ needs for more intense working or more flexible working hours affect their employees’ psychosomatic health. A German representative survey of 13,452 full-time employees found that long working hours, work intensity (deadline and performance pressure) and flexibility requirements (permanent availability, changes in working hours) were significantly related to psychosomatic health complaints. When considering future work design and practices, these findings show which unfavourable working conditions are to be avoided to maintain the psychosomatic health of employees.

Aims: Applying a gender- and age group-sensitive approach, we investigated the effect of labour-market transitions (job loss and re-employment) on subjective physical and mental health. Methods: A combination of the difference-in-differences approach and propensity score matching controls for selectivity and initial health differences. This allowed us to analyse the causal effect of job loss and re-employment on subjective health. We made use of data from the German Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security and combined survey information with administrative records of the Federal Employment Agency for employed and unemployed men and women 31–60 years of age ( n = 2213). We controlled for labour-market experiences before the time period under study and for labour-market transitions between the interviews. Subjective health was assessed using the SF-12 health questionnaire, enabling us to differentiate between subjective mental and physical health functioning. Results: We found that physical health was affected mainly in older persons between 45 and 60 years old. Controlling for covariates using propensity score matching, mental health was affected only when living-wage jobs (i.e. jobs that provide sufficient income to achieve a defined minimum standard of living above the social benefit level) are gained or lost. Younger women showed a significant improvement in mental health after re-employment. In contrast, job loss affected only older individuals’ mental health, with a particularly negative effect observed for men. Conclusions: Our results not only showed that women and men are affected differently by job loss and re-employment, but also that age is an important factor. Older men were affected most severely by job loss, whereas re-employment was found to improve mental health only in women aged 31–44 years. It is therefore important to address the health problems of different socio-demographic groups separately, and to apply active labour-market policies with regard to unemployed men and women with health impairments. Based on our results, we suggest the promotion of employment with income levels above the maximum welfare benefit award.

Increasing disruptions and heterogeneity in employment biographies, a growing number of unemployment experiences, later labour market entries, and an increase in atypical forms of employment lead to declines of statutory pension entitlement accumulation over the life course. Moreover, in accordance with Easterlin (1987) , significant economic disadvantages can be expected for large generations. In fact, the German baby boomers born in the 1950s and 1960s, the next generation of pensioners, will have to accept several additional pension cuts due to pension reforms. Against this background, we ask how different employment patterns are related to disproportional statutory pension entitlements for German baby boomers in the middle of their working life. We examine work trajectories and their implications for accrued statutory pension entitlements by the age of 42 for two baby boomer cohorts in comparison to two older cohorts. For our analyses, we employ the Biographical Data of Selected Insurance Agencies in Germany (BASiD) for those born in 1947, 1953, 1959 and 1965 (N = 25,863). In the first step, we summarise the most important employment patterns of the cohorts under study. In the second step, we test the influence of these employment patterns on the accumulation of individual statutory pension entitlements until the age of 42 and compare the baby boomer cohorts to previous cohorts. We find that late entries to employment as well as diversified and unstable employment are related to lower levels of statutory pension entitlements for particular groups of German baby boomers.

Zusammenfassung Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es zu untersuchen, wie die Einfuhrung neuer Technologien mit der Arbeitsintensitat, der Autonomie und den monotonen Aufgaben von Beschaftigten zusammenhangt. Weiterhin wird untersucht, ob und inwieweit der empirisch gut dokumentierte Zusammenhang zwischen diesen Arbeitsbedingungen und dem Wohlbefinden der Beschaftigten durch die Einfuhrung neuer Technologien moderiert wird. Die Analysen basieren auf der BIBB/BAuA-Erwerbstatigenbefragung 2006, 2012 und 2018, die es ermoglicht, zwischen neu eingefuhrten Computerprogrammen und neu eingefuhrten Fertigungs- oder Verfahrenstechnologien zu unterscheiden. OLS-Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Einfuhrung neuer Technologien mit einer erhohten Arbeitsintensitat verbunden ist. Hinsichtlich der Autonomie und monotonen Tatigkeiten gibt es Unterschiede je nach Art der eingesetzten Technologie. Die Analysen zeigen ferner, dass die Einfuhrung neuer Computerprogramme den Zusammenhang zwischen Arbeitsbedingungen und Arbeitsunzufriedenheit bzw. psychosomatischen Gesundheitsbeschwerden teilweise moderiert. Zusammenfassend zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass die Einfuhrung neuer Technologien mit Chancen und Risiken sowohl fur die Arbeitssituation als auch fur das Wohlbefinden der Mitarbeiter verbunden ist und in den Aushandlungsprozessen der Sozialpartner starker berucksichtigt werden sollten. Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine how the introduction of new technologies is related to employee’s work intensity, job autonomy and monotonous tasks. Further, we examine whether and to what extent the empirically well-documented relationship between these working conditions and employee wellbeing is moderated by the introduction of new technologies. The analyses are based on the BIBB/BAuA employment survey 2006, 2012 and 2018, that allow us to distinguish between newly introduced computer programmes and newly introduced production/process technologies. Results of OLS models indicate that the introduction of new technologies is associated with increased work intensity. Regarding job autonomy and monotonous tasks there are differences according to the type of introduced technology.The analyses further reveal that the introduction of new computer programmes partially moderates the association between working conditions and job dissatisfaction or psychosomatic health complaints, respectively. In sum, the results indicate that new technologies are associated with both, opportunities and risks for the work situation as well as the well-being of employees and should be given greater consideration in social partnership negotiation processes. This article examines the relationship between precarious employment and functional health. Precarious employment is considered to be a multidimensional concept encompassing the legal framework of the employment relationship, the material situation as well as workplace-related ratings of employees. Workplace-related dimensions include job insecurity, lack of development opportunities, scope of influence at the workplace, perceived appreciation and physical demands. Based on data from the German lidA study (n=5.337), it has been empirically tested whether these precarious characteristics of employment are negatively associated to functional health and if they differ according to the type of employment relationship and between men and women. The focus of the analysis is on middle-aged German employees. The results show that it is, above all, workplace-related dimensions of precarious employment that are related to health and also that gender differences exist in the examined relationships.

Encouraged by the European Employment Strategy, the German government, like many other European governments, promotes individual employability as an instrument to improve the persistently low employment prospects of older job-seekers in the labour market. However, ageing is only rarely discussed in contemporary employability approaches. This article includes various employability approaches and empirically tests the commonly used dimensions of employability in actual labour market prospects with respect to older job-seekers (>50 years of age). Many dimensions of employability are found to vary by age, and older job-seekers can be described as disadvantaged with regard to certain dimensions. However, disadvantages in “classical” employability factors cannot fully explain the comparatively poor labour market prospects of older job-seekers. This article shows that older job-seekers in Germany are less likely to transit from unemployment to employment, even after controlling for employability factors.

Flexible Arbeitszeitmodelle gewinnen in der modernen Arbeitswelt zunehmend an Bedeutung. Vielfach wird in Frage gestellt, ob bestehende Regelungen des Arbeitszeitgesetzes den Wandel der Arbeitswelt noch angemessen berucksichtigen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde auch eine Diskussion uber die gesetzliche Mindestruhezeit von elf Stunden zwischen zwei Arbeitstagen angestosen. Dieser Beitrag zeigt auf Basis der BAuA-Arbeitszeitbefragung 2017 (n = 6136 Vollzeitbeschaftigte), dass die Verkurzung von Ruhezeiten, uber alle Berufe hinweg, negativ mit psychosomatischen Beschwerden und Work-Life-Balance assoziiert ist. Zudem kann gezeigt werden, dass der vielfach bestatigte negative Zusammenhang zwischen taglichen Arbeitszeiten bzw. Uberstunden mit Gesundheit und Work-Life-Balance zum Teil auf verkurzte Ruhezeiten zuruckzufuhren ist. Aus den Analysen wird deutlich, dass bereits eine gelegentliche Unterschreitung der elfstundigen Mindestruhezeit mit Risiken fur Gesundheit und einer schlechteren Work-Life-Balance einhergeht. Praktische Relevanz: Verkurzte Ruhezeiten zeigen negative Zusammenhange zu Gesundheit und Work-Life-Balance. Die gesetzlichen Ruhezeiten stellen aus Sicht des Arbeitsschutzes daher einen notwendigen Mindeststandard dar, dessen Einhaltung fur eine gesunde Arbeitszeitgestaltung fur alle Tatigkeiten masgeblich ist. Eine Flexibilisierung der Arbeitszeit, in Form einer Absenkung der Mindestruhezeit, ist aus arbeitswissenschaftlicher Sicht abzulehnen. Daruber hinaus sollten die bestehenden Ausnahmeregelungen kritisch reflektiert werden. Bei der Gestaltung und Bewertung von Arbeitszeiten sollte neben der Lange der Arbeitszeit stets auch die Ruhezeit berucksichtigt werden. Eine Unterschreitung der Mindestruhezeit sollte in jedem Fall vermieden werden.

Hintergrund: Die Zahl alterer Erwerbspersonen in Schicht- und Nachtarbeit hat in den vergangenen Jahren deutlich zugenommen. Gleichzeitig ist der Anteil von Frauen unter den Schichtarbeitenden stark angestiegen. Dies ist auf die alter werdende Erwerbsbevolkerung sowie die Ausweitung der Schichtarbeit im tertiaren Bereich zuruckzufuhren. Die bisherige Forschung zeigt, dass Schichtarbeit haufig mit gesundheitlichen Belastungen einhergeht. Vor diesem Hintergrund zielt die Studie darauf ab, die Situation erwerbstatiger Manner und Frauen an der Schwelle zum hoheren Erwerbsalter in Hinblick auf den Zusammenhang zwischen Schichtarbeit und physischer Gesundheit naher zu betrachten. Methodik: Auf Basis von Daten der Kohortenstudie „lidA – leben in der Arbeit“ werden lineare Regressionsmodelle geschatzt. Hierbei wird der Einfluss von Schichtarbeit – mit und ohne Nachtarbeit – und weiteren Arbeitsexpositionen unter Kontrolle von Schlafstorungen und dem gesundheitsrelevanten Verhalten, auf die korperliche Gesundheit der Babyboomerjahrgange 1959 und 1965 ermittelt (n=5 637). Die Modelle werden stratifiziert nach Geschlecht sowie fur Frauen auserdem nach dem Erwerbstatigkeitsumfang. Ergebnisse: Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass Schichtarbeiter vor allem durch ihre Arbeiterstellung und durch physische Expositionen belastet sind; Schichtarbeiterinnen zusatzlich durch hohe Verausgabung und geringe Belohnung. Arbeiten sie in Teilzeit, zudem durch ubersteigerte berufliche Verausgabungsbereitschaft. Schlussfolgerung: Die Arbeitsbedingungen der Schichtarbeit sind starker von Belastungen gepragt als Tatigkeiten mit Normalarbeitszeiten. Zum Erhalt der Arbeitsfahigkeit alter werdender, schichtarbeitender Manner und Frauen sind weitere spezifische Arbeitsschutz- und Kompensationsmasnahmen, wie auch eine sensible Personalfuhrung unabdingbar. Arbeitsschutzmasnahmen sollten dabei vermehrt auch die psychosozialen Arbeitsbedingungen berucksichtigen.

Hintergrund: Die Babyboomer sind die ersten, die dem Arbeitsmarkt bis zum Alter 67 zur Verfugung stehen mussen. Wesentliche Pramisse fur einen langen Verbleib im Erwerbsleben ist eine gute Gesundheit. Belegt ist, dass psychosoziale Arbeitsbedingungen in Zusammenhang zur Gesundheit stehen. Immer mehr Beschaftigte berichten von psychosozialen Belastungen bei ihrer Arbeit. Daneben sind psychische Erkrankungen inzwischen der Hauptgrund fur den Eintritt in die Erwerbsminderungsrente. Vor diesem Hintergrund betrachtet der vorliegende Beitrag den Zusammenhang zwischen psychosozialen Arbeitsbedingungen und der mentalen Gesundheit exemplarisch fur zwei der Babyboomerjahrgange. Methodik: Zur Analyse der angenommenen Zusammenhange werden die Daten der Studie „lidA-leben in der Arbeit. Kohortenstudie zu Gesundheit und Alterwerden in der Arbeit“ herangezogen (N=6 057). Die mentale Gesundheit wird mit der Skala zur mentalen Gesundheit des SF-12 abgebildet. Daneben werden die Einzelitems sowie die Skalen zu quantitativen Anforderungen, Arbeitstempo und Sozialer Unterstutzung von Kollegen des Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ) verwendet. Als Kontrollvariablen werden Kohortenzugehorigkeit, Ausbildungsniveau, Stellung im Beruf sowie Partnerschaftsstatus berucksichtigt. Ergebnisse: Eine multivariate Betrachtung des Zusammenhangs zwischen den quantitativen Anforderungen bei der Arbeit, dem Arbeitstempo und der erfahrenen Hilfe und Unterstutzung von Kollegen zeigt jeweils einen signifikanten Zusammenhang zur mentalen Gesundheit. Dabei stehen die steigende Haufigkeit der Anforderung schnell zu arbeiten sowie zunehmende quantitative Anforderungen in einem negativen Zusammenhang zur mentalen Gesundheit. Fur die Unterstutzung von Kolleginnen und Kollegen zeigt sich hingegen ein positiver Zusammenhang zur mentalen Gesundheit. Diese Beziehungen lassen sich gleichermasen fur Frauen und Manner beobachten. Schlussfolgerung: Bei der betrachteten Gruppe der Babyboomer, Erwerbstatige an der Schwelle zum hoheren Erwerbsalter, zeigt sich deutlich, dass die psychosozialen Arbeitsbedingungen mit der mentalen Gesundheit zusammenhangen. Da die hier betrachtete Personengruppe noch bis zu 18 Jahre im Erwerbsleben stehen wird, bei einem Renteneintritt im Alter von 67 Jahren, sollten nach einer schon erfolgten weitreichenden Verbesserung der physischen Arbeitsbedingungen nun auch psychosoziale Arbeitsbedingungen noch starker zum Thema des Arbeitsschutzes gemacht werden.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of workfare programme participation on self-efficacy, because many studies suggest that sufficient self-efficacy is essential for successful job search in modern labour markets. Design/methodology/approach – The paper analyses an exemplary German workfare programme’ the so-called “One-Euro-Jobs” programme and examines whether participation in this programme improved the self-efficacy of participants. The analyses are based on survey data (Panel Study Labour Market and Social Security) that were combined with administrative records of the Statistics Department of the German Federal Employment Agency to obtain more reliable information on programme participation. To detect causal effects of participation, the authors apply propensity score matching. Findings – The findings show that participants’ self-efficacy, on average, was not improved by programme participation. Also, no well-determined positive effects of programme participation were found when controlling for the individual baseline level of self-efficacy. Practical implications – The findings suggest that workfare programme participation did not fulfil several of the psychological functions of work necessary to enhance participants’ self-efficacy. The authors suggest a two-step approach to enhancing individuals’ self-efficacy and their job-search abilities: in the first step, workfare participation aims to improve employability; in the second step, participants can learn the extent to which they have become ready to work in a regular subsidised job. Originality/value – Various studies examine the effect of workfare programme participation on employment prospects, well-being, health or social participation. Within the discourse on active labour market policy, this paper is the first to study the effect of workfare programme participation on self-efficacy.

In the examination of older employees’ employability, one can distinguish between internal and external employability. Internal employability can be measured by individual employment stability, and external employability occurs when employees replace one employment relationship with another. Most studies focus on the personal skills and characteristics that are necessary to maintain employability. However, external factors also contribute to individual employability. Therefore, this study examines which organisational attributes of firms contribute to older employees’ employability in Germany. Taking firm and individual characteristics into account, the results of discrete-time survival models show that in specific organisational structures, older employees have higher internal employability. Accordingly, older employees are more likely to maintain employment in the service sector and in recruiting organisations facing (skilled) labour shortages. However, the results also indicate that financially investing organisations facilitate early labour market exits. With regard to older employees’ external employability, the results show only little evidence indicating an association between organisational attributes of firms and the likelihood of job change.

Zusammenfassung Auf Basis der „Linked Employer-Employee“(LIAB)-Daten des Instituts für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung analysieren wir den Anteil älterer Mitarbeiter (50+) in deutschen Betrieben über einen Zeitraum von insgesamt 13 Jahren (1996-2008). Ausgehend von einem organisationsdemografischen Ansatz werden die Anteilswerte durch die Prozesse der natürlichen Alterung und der Personalfluktuation sowie durch weitere betriebliche Merkmale erklärt. Die Schätzungen im Rahmen von Fixed-Effects-Panelmodellen legen nahe, dass betriebliche Altersstrukturen träge sind, Neueinstellungen und Freisetzungen jedoch altersspezifische Konsequenzen nach sich ziehen. Der Anteil älterer Mitarbeiter steigt insbesondere in Betrieben mit geringer Personalfluktuation, bei konstanter oder sinkender Betriebsgrçße, in Betrieben mit steigendem Anteil Teilzeitbeschäftigter und bei einem Ausbau erfahrungsbasierter Tätigkeiten. Dagegen sinkt der Anteil älterer Mitarbeiter im Betrieb, wenn die Betriebsgrçße zunimmt, die Personalfluktuation steigt, hochqualifizierte Tätigkeiten ausgebaut werden und die Entlohnung verstärkt an Seniorität gekoppelt wird. Auf der Basis dieser Befunde werden abschließend Mçglichkeiten zur Verbesserung der Beschäftigungschancen älterer Erwerbspersonen diskutiert.

Given the ageing and shrinking labor force, the baby boom cohorts are of increasing importance to the German labor market. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the work trajectories of two illustrative baby boom cohorts, born in 1959 and 1965. We make use of the new data source BASiD. Using optimal matching methods, we consider clusters to identify typical work trajectories of the two birth cohorts. The clusters are characterized by different degrees of participation in employment. Our results show that work trajectories characterized mainly by full-time employment are declining in relevance and that more diversified work-life concepts are gaining importance.
