Nickelocene acts as a single-spin source; however, chromocene has spin polarization within it. This causes the difference in the magnetic behaviour of di-nickelocene complexes and nickelocene–chromocene mixed complexes.

This study addresses the magnetic interaction between paramagnetic metal ions and the radical ligands taking the [CuII(hfac)2(imVDZ)] and [MII(hfac)2(pyDTDA)] (imVDZ=1,5-dimethyl-3-(1-methyl-2-imidazolyl)-6-oxoverdazyl ; hfac=(1,1,1,5,5,5)hexafluroacetylacetonate ; pyDTDA = 4-(2'-pyridyl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl), (M=Cu,Ni,Co,Fe,Mn) compounds as reference systems. The coupling between the metal and ligand spins is quantified in terms of the exchange coupling constant (J) in the platform of density functional theory (DFT) and the wave function-based complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) method. Application of DFT and broken symmetry (BS) formalism results ferromagnetic coupling for all the transition metal complexes except the Mn(II) complex. This DFT-BS prediction of magnetic nature matches with the experimental finding for all the complexes other than the Fe(II)-pyDTDA complex, for which an antiferromagnetic coupling between high spin iron and the thiazyl ligand has been reported. However, evaluation of spin state energetics through the multiconfigurational wave function-based method produces the S = 3/2 ground spin state for the iron-thiazyl in parity with experiment. Electronic structure analyses find the overlap between the metal- and ligand-based singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) to be one of the major reasons attributing to different extent of exchange coupling in the systems under investigation.

The influence of donor-acceptor (D-A) groups on the nonlinear optical (NLO) property of B12N12 functionalized nanocluster has been investigated by density functional theory. We study the effect of bonding of three electron acceptor ligands (CN, COOH, and NO2) and three donor ligands (NH2, N(CH3)2, and PhNH2) positioned at opposite ends of B12N12 nanocluster in the gas phase. The result reveals that the complexation of D-A groups on the B12N12 nanocluster is energetically favorable and significantly narrowed the HOMO-LUMO gaps. The functionalization of D-A groups lead to an extremely large first hyperpolarizability value. Our survey reports the strongest NLO responses found in PhNH2-B12N12-PhCN cluster (1882.47 × 10-30 esu), whereas centrosymmetric B12N12 cluster yields a zero hyperpolarizability value. Designed systems are analyzed through the HOMO-LUMO gap, frontier molecular orbital, hyperpolarizability, Δr index, transition dipole moment density, density of states (DOS), and molecular electrostatic potential. The obtained results are well correlated with the computed absorption spectra of the molecule. The results demonstrate that phenyl ring incorporated D-A groups amplify the NLO response to a larger extent. The significant first hyperpolarizability arises due to charge transfer from the donor to the acceptor moiety. As a whole, this theoretical work provides a direction to researchers that the right choice of substitution can considerably impact the nonlinear optical property of BN nanoclusters.

In this study we have designed a spin caloritronic device based on boron doped armchair graphene nanoribbons (B2-7AGNR). In presence of ferromagnetic (FM) graphitic-carbon nitride (g-C4N3) electrodes the spin-thermoelectric features of the device, both for FM and antiferromagnetic (AFM) states, are studied using first principle calculations. The spin polarized transmission peaks and the presence of density of states near the Fermi level indicate that the system have large spin-thermoelectric figure of merit. In addition, it is observed that the system has a large tunneling magnetoresistance due to the difference in total current between FM and AFM configurations. Further studies reveal that the spin component of the Seebeck coefficient of the device is much higher than the other zigzag and armchair nanoribbons. When the spin magnetic moments of the electrodes are aligned in parallel manner, spin-thermoelectric figure of merit of the system becomes significantly high. It has also been found that on decreasing temperature the efficiency of the device increases. As a whole, the numerical results show that g-C4N3-B2-7AGNR-g-C4N3 system in FM configuration is an efficient low temperature thermoelectric device.

The present study explores the optical properties of retinal molecules in presence of small gold cluster (Au14), where the cluster motifs are varied through Oh, D2h and C4v symmetries. The constructive interference of the transition dipole moments (TDMs) in retinal-gold nanoconjugates is responsible for most intense electronic transitions. The charge transfer transition from the occupied Au cluster orbital to the unoccupied retinal orbital is playing significant role in the spectral shift of the conjugates. The vibrational frequency analysis of 11-cis retinal and its conjugate (Au14 in D2h symmetry) reveal that the different vibrational modes associated with the isomerization process are red shifted in the conjugate. The conjugation of isolated retinal with gold probes makes the process of 11-cis to all-trans isomerization thermodynamically favorable. The entire evaluation reflects the effect of gold cluster in the spectral tuning of retinal molecules and reveals its relevant consequences on photoisomerization and hence the process of vision.

We investigate the underlying principle behind the occurrence of bond stretch isomerism in Be32-, which has not been revealed yet. Various computational studies of the different isomers are carried out at the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) level of theory in addition to the B3LYP level in conjunction with the 6-311++G(d) basis set. The potential energy surfaces linking the different isomers through transition states and conical intersections are investigated at the CASSCF level, connecting various geometrical isomers of Be32-. The linear intermediate of the Be32- cluster is considered to be of profound importance since its excited state is found to be degenerate and undergoing the Renner-Teller effect, producing two triangular bond stretch isomers. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on the Atom Centered Density Matrix Propagation (ADMP) method also further elucidate the phenomenon of isomerization via the linear intermediate. The variation of the global reactivity descriptors and free energy profile along the bond stretch isomerization path is also investigated. The estimated aromatic stabilization energy also corroborates the stability ordering of the bond stretch isomers.

Intramolecular charge transfer process can play a key role in developing strong nonlinear optical (NLO) response in a molecule for technological application. Herein, two series of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based push–pull systems have been designed with zwitterionic donor–acceptor groups, and their NLO properties have been evaluated using a density functional theory-based approach. Different π-conjugated linkers and electron acceptor groups were used to understand their roles in tuning the NLO properties. The molecules were analyzed through HOMO–LUMO gaps, frontier molecular orbitals, polarizabilities, hyperpolarizabilities, Δr indices, transition dipole moment densities, ionization potentials, electron affinities and reorganization energies for holes and electrons. These observations correlated well with the computed absorption spectra of the molecules. It is found that with the introduction of different π-linkers in the molecule, planarity is maintained and the HOMO–LUMO gap is systematically decreased, which leads to a large NLO response. It was noted that the electronic absorption wavelength maxima were found in the near-infrared region (934–1650 nm). The results show that compared to the pyridinium acceptor group, the imidazolium acceptor group in the BODIPY systems amplifies the NLO response to a larger extent. It is also observed that the BODIPY-based dye with an imidazolium acceptor and thienothiophene π-linker shows the highest first hyperpolarizability value of 3194 × 10−30 esu. Furthermore, the charge transfer occurs in the z-direction, as the z-component of the first hyperpolarizability is the dominant factor in this system. Here, the designed molecules show a characteristic reorganisation energy value, which is a deciding factor in the rate of hole/electron transport for favourable intermolecular coupling. As a whole, this theoretical work highlights that π-conjugated linkers and electron acceptor groups can be used judiciously to design new molecular systems for optoelectronic applications.

Five napthyridine-based fluorine-boron (BF2-napthyridine) conjugated compounds have been theoretically designed, and subsequently, their photophysical properties are investigated. The influence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups attached with the N∧C∧O moiety of BF2-napthyridine molecule has been interpreted. The optoelectronic properties, including absorption spectra and emission spectra of the BF2-napthyridine derivatives are studied using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) based methods. Different characteristics, such as HOMO-LUMO gap, molecular orbital density, ionization potential, electron affinity, and reorganization energy for hole and electron, are calculated. All these molecules show excellent π-electron delocalization. TD-DFT results illustrate that the amine-substituted BF2-napthyridine derivative has the highest absorption and emission maxima; it also shows a maximum Stoke shift. These results are well-correlated with the structural parameters and calculated HOMO-LUMO gap. Moreover, it is found that introduction of an electron-donating group into the BF2-napthyridine complex improves the hole transport properties and provides useful clues in designing new materials for organic light emitting diodes (OLED). As a whole, this work demonstrates that electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups in BF2 derivatives can extend their effectiveness toward designing of OLED materials, vitro cellular studies, ex vivo assays, and in vivo imaging agents.

We study the phenomenon of unconventional superconductivity in iron pnictides on the basis of localized-itinerant model. In this proposed model, superconductivity arises from the itinerant part of electrons, whereas antiferromagnetism arises from the localized part. The itinerant electrons move over the sea of localized electrons in antiferromagnetic alignment and interact with them resulting in excitation of magnons. We find that triplet pairing of itinerant electrons via magnons is possible in checkerboard antiferromagnetic spin configuration of the substances CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2 in pure form for umklapp scattering with scattering wave vector Q = ( 1 , 1 ) , in the unit of π/a where a being one orthorhombic crystal parameter, which is the nesting vector between two Fermi surfaces. The interaction potential figured out in this way, increases with the decrease in nearest neighbour (NN) exchange couplings. Under ambient pressure, with stripe antiferromagnetic spin configuration, a very small value of coupling constant is obtained which does not give rise to superconductivity. The critical temperature of superconductivity of the substances CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2 in higher pressure checkerboard antiferromagnetic spin configuration are found to be 12.12 K and 29.95 K respectively which are in agreement with the experimental results.

In this letter, a possible reason behind selective host-guest organization in the initial stage of sI methane hydrate nucleation is provided, through density functional theory based calculations. In doing so, we have connected earlier experimental and theoretical observations on the structure and energetics of sI methane hydrate to our findings. Geometry and relative stability of small (H 2 O) 5 and (H 2 O) 6 clusters, presence of CH 4 guest, integrity and cavity radius of (H 2 O) 20 and (H 2 O) 24 , as well as the weak van der Waals type of forces, particularly dispersion interaction, are major factors responsible for initial formation of methane encapsulated dodecahedron cavity over tetrakaidecahedron.

We have investigated four different already synthesized meta- and para-connected diradicals to get their magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) through generalized valence bond (GVB) approach and also with Hartree-Fock (HF) theory with a view to establish the superiority of GVB method over HF theory for the prediction of J. In doing so, at first optimization of these molecules are done at B3LYP level of density functional theory using the 6-31++g(d) basis set. With these optimized geometries, J values are computed at GVB method along with TZV basis set and these values are compared with those of the J values obtained using HF/TZV level of theory. Nonetheless, J values found in both the theoretical processes are also compared with the experimental findings. Thus, the supremacy of the wavefunction based GVB method in predicting J is established in comparison with the HF method.

The domain of aromaticity spans a wide range of molecules, from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocycles to all-metal systems. Here, in silico we demonstrate the aromaticity in C2B2F4, extending beyond the limit of conventional aromatic molecules. This molecule gains the magic number of six π-electrons through an unusual electronic contribution from exo-cyclic atoms. The stability of the molecule is established through density functional theory, ab initio calculations as well as molecular dynamics simulation.

Here we study a set of novel magnetic organic molecular species with different halide ions (fluoride, chloride, bromide) absorbed ∼2 Å above or below the center of an aromatic π-ring in an m-aminyl diradical. Focus is on the nature of anion-π interaction and its impact on magnetic properties, specifically on magnetic anisotropy and on intramolecular magnetic exchange coupling. In the development of single molecule magnets, magnetic anisotropy is considered to be the most influential factor. A new insight regarding the magnetic anisotropy that determines the barrier height for relaxation of magnetization of m-aminyl diradical-derived anionic complexes is obtained from calculations of the axial zero-field-splitting (ZFS) parameter D. The noncovalent anion-π interaction strongly influences magnetic anisotropy in m-aminyl-halide diradical complexes. In particular, the change of D values from positive (for the m-aminyl diradical, m-aminyl diradical/fluoride, and m-aminyl diradical/chloride complexes) to negative D-values in m-aminyl diradical complexes containing bromide signals a change from oblate to prolate type of spin-density distribution. Furthermore, the noncovalent halide-π interactions lead to large values of intramolecular magnetic exchange coupling coefficients J exhibiting a ferromagnetic sign. The magnitude of J steadily increases going from anionic complexes containing fluoride to chloride and then to bromide. Relations are sought between the magnetic exchange coupling coefficients J and aromaticity, namely structural HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) and magnetic NICS (nucleus independent chemical shift) aromaticity indices, in particular, the NICS

A total of nine diradical-based organic chiral magnetic molecules with allene and cumulene couplers have been theoretically designed, and subsequently, their magnetic property has been studied by density functional theory. It is found that with an increase in length of the coupler, a remarkable increase in spin density within the coupler takes place. An increase in the length of the coupler reduces the energy of LUMO, and a smaller HOMO-LUMO gap facilitates stronger magnetic coupling and thereby a higher magnetic exchange coupling constant (J). This observation is supported by the occupation number of natural orbitals.

Aromaticity is an important concept in chemistry which extends over a wide range of molecular systems and imparts unique features to the molecules possessing it. In the present work, novel heteroatomic molecular systems are proposed which demonstrate non-conventional aromaticity where the molecules accomplish the aromatic sextet and hence stabilization through the conjugation of $$\uppi $$ -electrons from exo-cyclic substituents. A considerable $$\upsigma $$ -aromaticity is also observed which does not involve the exo-cyclic atoms. At first, the stability of these molecular systems is theoretically ascertained through various density functional theory and ab-initio calculations along with the energy decomposition analysis, T1 diagnostic run, estimation of ring strain energy and highest occupied molecular orbital–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap which indicate towards the viability of these molecular systems. Then, a detailed study of aromaticity with the aid of different computational probes such as nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), dissected canonical molecular orbital-NICS analysis, multi-centre bond index (MCI), adaptive natural density partitioning and theoretical tools such as aromatic stabilization energy based on a fully ab-initio approach are performed which establish unique exo-cyclic aromaticity in these systems.

The resulting distortion of the octahedral symmetry of the complex [CrIII(NH3)6]3+ upon replacing the axial ligands with halides (i.e., weaker ligands) affects the stability of the doublet state with respect to that of the quartet ground state. This substitution affects the doublet-to-quartet transition responsible for phosphorescence. The position of the halide with respect to ammonia in the spectrochemical series is a major influence on the emission wavelength of the complex. The close proximity of fluorine and ammonia in the spectrochemical series leads to a blueshift in the emission wavelength when fluoride ions are introduced into the complex, thus providing a rational approach to the design of blue-phosphorescent materials, which are desirable for OLEDs used in full-color displays.

The NLO properties of two synthesized aryl extended thiophene fused nickel dithiolenes have been studied theoretically. Based on these two systems, a systematic modification has been made by substituting neutral and zwitterionic donor-acceptor groups at the aryl (phenyl and thenyl) ring to enlarge their NLO responses. Among the four designed systems, the zwitterionic donor-acceptor group significantly reduces the HOMO-LUMO energy gap, resulting in an enormous increase in the first hyperpolarizability (β) values. To judge their high NLO response, transition dipole moment (TDM) density values have been plotted and it has been found that electron dissipation occurs from one donor part to the acceptor part with a high Δr index value. It should be noted that the high Δr index values are a quantitative measurement to understand the type of transitions, and we noticed that a charge transfer transition occurs in the case of zwitterionic systems. Hence, a relationship between the first hyperpolarizability and TDM has been established. In order to highlight the NLO active segment in a molecule, a density analysis has also been done. We anticipate that as our designed systems possess high β values, they should have significance in optical uses.

We have investigated the intramolecular magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) for a series of nitronyl nitroxide diradicals connected by a range of linear conjugated and cumulene couplers focusing on the unusual π-interaction properties within the couplers. Distance between radical centers, spin density within the couplers, as well as the dihedral angles between the radical centers and the plane of the coupler influence the strength of magnetic coupling. We also establish that with the increase in the length of the coupler, the strength of magnetic interaction in conjugated and cumulated systems varies in a different way. Transport calculations show that with the increase in chain length, diradicals based on cumulene containing an even number of carbon atoms act as better conductors than cumulenes with an odd number of carbon atoms. It is also observed that with the increase in the length of the conjugated coupler based diradicals, transmission does not vary in a sequential way.

Extended π-conjugated molecules are known to have interesting applications as conducting nanowires, memory devices, and diodes. In the present work, we investigate the effect of the length of unsaturated organic molecular wires and radical substituted wires on the conduction properties of hybrid devices. At the same time, we also study the effect of the length of unsaturated radical substituted organic molecular wires on the magnetic properties. It was found that the value of magnetic exchange coupling constant (J) depends on the distance between spin centers. In order to measure the transmission characteristics of these conjugated molecular wires, we have designed a molecular bridge structure where the phenyl based molecular system containing conjugated multiple bonds of varying length is used as a bridging fragment between two semi-infinitely widened Au9 fcc clusters along the Au(111) direction. A state of the art non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method coupled with density functional theory (DFT) based approach has been applied on this two-probe molecular bridge system to understand its electrical transport characteristics. It was observed that the molecular wires with smaller length show higher transmission. The transmission spectra of the ferromagnetically coupled diradical based molecular wires show similar behavior to those of the wires without any substitution. Hence, there is no effect of radical substitution on transport properties for ferromagnetically coupled diradical based molecular wires, whereas for antiferromagnetically coupled systems, the scenario is different.

Regiocontrolled nitration of 4-quinolone, the highly privileged scaffold, has been developed at ambient conditions. The nitro group can selectively be introduced at diverse positions simply by tuning the reactivity of the moiety. Discrimination is being achieved through the selective functionalization of the free N-H group. The functional group has been screened theoretically with the help of Fukui function and local softness calculation. Theoretical predictions are synchronized well with the experimental findings. Finally, this nitration technique allows quick access to the structurally diverse 4-quinolones.

The current study extends an earlier investigation (Bhattacharya, et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2012, 14, 6905) to further explore various photomagnetic and optical properties of bis-imino nitroxide, that is, (IN)2-based green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore coupled diradicals revealing new significant features. The conversion mechanisms of selected trans-isomers into their corresponding cis-conformers are discussed in detailed using a number of recently-developed density functional theory (DFT) functionals based on the Minnesota suite of DFT-models as well as using some other DFT functionals developed earlier. To provide a more in-depth analysis of variations in magnetic properties as trans-conformers (singlet ground-state) convert into their cis-analogues (triplet ground-state), the changes in exchange magnetic coupling constants J are compared with the variation of the selected aromaticity indices. The aromaticity indices include the nuclear independent chemical shift [NICS(0)] values calculated at the center of ring structures and the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity. Furthermore, the investigation of static nonlinear optical response properties in the (IN)2-based GFP chromophore coupled diradicals reveal unusually large static first hyperpolarizabilities for these systems which is highly significant for practical applications in optics and optoelectronics. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The bond-stretch isomers are characterized by a principal change in the bond-length with the rest of the molecule being unaltered. The electronic structure regulates the bond stretch isomerism phenomenon in which has been investigated with density functional theory, ab initio CASSCF, highly efficient n-electron valence state perturbation theory and multireference configuration interaction calculations. Two isomers are distinguished on different potential energy surfaces and the corresponding avoided crossing is also studied in details. The bonding pattern in two isomers are analysed through adaptive natural density partitioning analysis and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis. The bonds in both the isomers primarily involve the 2p orbitals, which overlap face-to-face in long-bond isomer. Whereas, in-plane π-bonding occurs at the short-bond isomer leading to unusual bent bond. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We have designed seven organic diradicals with polyacene couplers to show the effect of the configuration, aromaticity [estimated with the help of Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift (NICS(0) and NICS(I)), and Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA)] and HOMO–LUMO gap of the couplers on the exchange coupling constant of the diradicals. It has been observed that the linear polyacenes are less aromatic compared to the corresponding angular ones. We have correlated aromaticity indexes NICS and HOMA to explain the change of aromaticity for structures having the same number of carbon and hydrogen atoms and rings. The diradicals with linear couplers manifest stronger exchange coupling constants compared to those with angular couplers. It has been found that the NICS value cannot adequately address the aromaticity of the polyacenes, whereas the HOMA value can reliably account for the observations. Here, we have found the HOMO–LUMO gap is the determining factor for the extent of the magnetic exchange coupling constant in the diradicals. It has been found that not only the energy value of the LUMO, but also its occupation number and spatial position, play an important role in magnetic exchange in diradicals. Thus, the role of the LUMO in magnetic exchange has been firmly established through this work. The magneto-structural correlation has also been studied to establish the mechanism of magnetic interaction.

The spin blocker capacity of borazine is investigated. Specifically, meta-B-B, meta-N-N and para-B-N connected borazines are used as spin-blocker couplers comprised of a pair of radicals: two iminonitroxides (IN); IN and tetrathiafulvalene radical cations (TTF); or two TTFs. Density functional theory (DFT) is used to elucidate the spin blocker capacity of the linkage-specific (meta or para) borazine-coupler and elaborate the role of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) in magnetic-exchange. Furthermore, a qualitative relation between different magnetic aromaticity indices is made using both nuclear-independent chemical shift (NICS) and the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA). The NICS values are calculated at the centre of the borazine spacer fragment of these diradical species and then also at 0.5 Å increments of the virtual probe from this centre position up to an orthogonal distance of 2.0 Å from the centre. The HOMA values are calculated for the borazine ring fragment in these diradicals. Based on the HOMA and NICS values, it is evident that the borazine exhibits less aromatic character than benzene itself - due to the polar nature of B-N π-bonding. The LUMO mediated spin-exchange between the two consecutive singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) is explicitly discussed and confirmed to play a pivotal role. The parity of the coupler pathways, i.e. even or odd number of bonds along a selected pathway, between radical moieties is an important factor in predicting the nature and extent of magnetic exchange for these diradicals. Surprisingly, borazine does not always act as a spin-coupling blocker - rather in some cases the coupling is enhanced as compared to a homoatomic (carbon-based) benzene coupler.

In this work, the effects of ligand field strength as well as the metal coordination geometry on magnetic anisotropy of pentacoordinated CoII complexes have been investigated using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. For that, a strategic design and synthesis of three pentacoordinate CoII complexes [Co(bbp)Cl2]·(MeOH) (1), [Co(bbp)Br2]·(MeOH) (2), and [Co(bbp)(NCS)2] (3) has been achieved by using the tridentate coordination environment of the ligand in conjunction with the accommodating terminal ligands (i.e., chloride, bromide, and thiocyanate). Detailed magnetic studies disclose the occurrence of slow magnetic relaxation behavior of CoII centers with an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. A quantitative estimation of ZFS parameters has been successfully performed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this note, we have theoretically evaluated second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of two structural isomeric forms of three different green fluorescent protein chromophores (viz. cyan fluorescent protein (CFP), orange variant of Discosoma coral (DsRed) and Zoanthus sp. (zFP)) coupled bis-TEMPO based photomagnetic high-spin diradicals by measuring the second-order effect of first molecular hyperpolarizabilities. The magnetic character and certain biological applicabilities of these diradicals are investigated theoretically in one of our recent papers (Bhattacharya et al., 2013). The second-order total molecular hyperpolarizabilities of these molecules are correlated with their respective HOMO–LUMO energy gaps (ΔEH-L) and also with the extent of the π-network of the couplers. Relations between ΔEH-L, chemical hardness, NLO response and exchange energy (Bhattacharya et al., 2013) are made. The applicability of these diradicals in the light of NLO properties are also highlighted in this note. Here these resulting fluoroprotein coupled diradicals can switch back and forth between two isomeric states of different colors upon irradiation by light of appropriate wavelength. Nonetheless, the magnitude of second-order NLO responses is different for different isomeric forms; hence we made a correlation between the color codes with the magnitude of second-order NLO responses. Thence with just simple visual inspection one can understand the extent of second-order of NLO response for these diradicals.

An extension of Clar's classical sextet ideas is presented to allow resonance-based weak-pairing long bonds. As the prototypic illustration, the theory is developed in the context of polyacenes, where this extension is needed to properly understand what goes on in this sort of polymer, whose radicality increases with chain length. A quantification of these novel Clar-sextic ideas is made, and detailed computational results are reported for the polyacenes even to the limit of arbitrary long chains. Resonance energies, bond lengths, and local (ring) aromaticity indices are addressed. It is emphasized that weak pairing is not at all unique to the polyacenes, but also applies whenever there are suitable boundaries (say of the "zig-zag" type) on general grapheneic structures--thereby readily explaining novel features of different boundaries.

Three different pairs of isomeric trans and corresponding cis forms of fluoroprotein chromophore (FPC) fragments coupled bis-2,2′,6,6′-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (TEMPO) based diradicals have been designed, and subsequently the magnetic properties of these diradicals have been investigated. We have used blue shifted variants of green fluorescent protein (cyan fluorescent protein or CFP), orange variant of Discosoma coral (DsRed) and yellow mutant of Zoanthus sp. (zFP) chromophore fragments as spin couplers. Along with the gas phase magnetic exchange coupling constant ( J ), the zero field splitting parameters (ZFSs) of all the diradicals in water and also in blood plasma medium have been calculated. We have found the all molecules to be ferromagnetic in nature with trans diradicals having lower spin–spin ZFS parameter (| D |) and the higher magnetic exchange coupling constants values than their respective fluorescent cis isomers. This has also been noted that due to the presence of the fluoroprotein chromophores, the resulting diradicals can switch back and forth between the isomeric trans and cis forms upon irradiation of the proper wavelength of light. The time dependent density functional (TDDFT) technique is used to measure the actual wavelength of this conversion for these diradicals. A comparison between the evaluated ZFS values with other nitroxide based synthesized molecular systems which are in use as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (MRICAs) indicates that if these diradicals are synthesized, they can be useful as MRICAs. A relation between the distance and the spin–spin ZFS parameter is also made. To support this fact, we have computed the solvent accessible surface area, molecular volume, the surface to volume ratio, and molecular diameter of each diradical species to address their potentiality to act as contrast agents in MRI. Finally the ability of these diradicals to act as MRICAs is further justified with the help of molecular electrostatic potential surfaces.

We have computed and investigated the performance of Minnesota density functionals especially the M05, M06, and M08 suite of complementary density functionals for the prediction of the heat of formations (HOFs) and the ionization potentials (IPs) of various benchmark complexes containing nine different first row transition metals. The eight functionals of M0X family, namely, the M05, M05-2X, M06-L, M06, M06-2X, M06-HF, M08-SO, and M08-HX are taken for the computation of the above-mentioned physical properties of such metal complexes along with popular Los Alamos National Laboratory 2 double-ζ (LANL2DZ) basis set. Total 54 benchmark systems are taken for HOF calculation, whereas the 47 systems among these benchmark complexes are chosen for the calculation of IPs because of lack of experimental results on rest of the seven systems. The computed values of HOFs and IPs are compared with the experimental results obtained from the literature. The deviation of these computed values from the actual experimental results is calculated for each eight different M0X functionals to judge their performances in evaluating these properties. Finally, a clear relationship between the exchange correlation energy of eight M0X functionals and their efficiency are made to predict the different physical properties.

Experimental evidence for Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons at room temperature in a thin film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) excited by parallel pumping is already available and different features of the experimental results have been explained qualitatively [Nature 443, 430 (2006)]. In the present work, we explain quantitatively different aspects of this experimental observation through spin wave treatment. In the case of parallel pumping field, we have developed a formula for the time required for the formation of magnon BEC in a thin film of ferromagnetic material. This relation is found to be in good agreement with known experimental results. In a similar treatment we predict the condition for the formation of BEC of magnons in the case of perpendicular pumping.

All-metal aromatic molecules are the latest inclusion in the family of aromatic systems. Two different classes of all-metal aromatic clusters are primarily identified: one is aromatic only in the low spin state, and the other shows aromaticity even in high-spin situations. This observation prompts us to investigate the effect of spin multiplicity on aromaticity, taking Al(4)(2-), Te(2)As(2)(2-), and their copper complexes as reference systems. Among these clusters, it has been found that the molecules that are aromatic only in their singlet state manifest antiaromaticity in their triplet state. The aromaticity in the singlet state is characterized by the diatropic ring current circulated through the bonds, which are cleaved to generate excess spin density on the atoms in the antiaromatic triplet state. Hence, in such systems, an antagonistic relationship between aromaticity and high-spin situations emerges. On the other hand, in the case of triplet aromatic molecules, the magnetic orbitals and the orbitals maintaining aromaticity are different; hence, aromaticity is not depleted in the high-spin state. The nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of the same set of clusters in different spin states has also been addressed. We correlate the second hyperpolarizability and spin density in order to judge the effect of spin multiplicity on third-order NLO response. This correlation reveals a high degree of NLO behavior in systems with excess spin density. The variance of aromaticity and NLO response with spin multiplicity is found to stem from a single aspect, the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), and eventually the interplay among aromaticity, magnetism, and NLO response in such materials is established. Hence, the HOMO-LUMO energy gap becomes the cornerstone for tuning the interplay. This correlation among the said properties is not system-specific and thus can be envisaged even beyond the periphery of all-metal aromatic clusters. Such interplay is of crucial importance in tailoring novel paradigm of multifunctional materials.

We report inversion of population between the ortho and para states of hydrogen at very low temperature with homogeneous external magnetic field. At low temperature, one needs to apply very high magnetic fields to get this population inversion when ortho states will be more populated than the para one. A numerical study of the change of bond length with magnetic field has been employed to find the precise field strengths at crossover points.

We present density functional theory based calculations on six diradicals in which imino nitroxide (IN) and IN or oxo- or phospha-verdazyl radical centres are linked by fragments of structures called cyan, blue and green fluorescent protein, respectively. In the latter two variants the indolyl fragment of cyan fluorescent protein (CFP) is replaced by phenyl and phenol moiety to obtain blue fluorescent protein Y66F GFP (BFPF) and green fluorescent protein (GFP). The photoinduced cis–trans isomerization of these diradical substituted chromophores is accompanied by changes from antiferro- to ferro-magnetic spin coupling on the radical centres. The calculations in this work provide predictions of the change of magnetic response to photo excitation. The estimated magnetic exchange coupling constants associated with cis–trans isomerization of the chromophores can be useful parameters in designing radical substituted isomeric fluorescent chromophores. Upon irradiation with light of appropriate wavelength, the dark trans diradicals turn into their fluorescent cis isomers. Therefore, photoinduced magnetic crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic regime associated with the change in color would be noticed in all three cases. This is a novel observation in case of the systems with GFP chromophore and its variants. These diradicals are potentially very useful in different applications and biocompatibility of such systems makes them prospective in different in vivo treatments. Moreover, change in color associated with magnetic crossover for these diradicals increases their suitability as biological taggers.

Nonequivalent magnetic interactions in systems with multiple magnetic centers can be explored through a proper description of exchange coupling. The magnetic exchange coupling constant (J) in systems with two magnetic sites is reliably estimated using Heisenberg-Dirac-van Vleck (HDVV) model through broken symmetry approach (BS) within a density functional theory (DFT) framework. However, in case of systems with multiple magnetic centers, exchange coupling constants, evaluated through state-of-the-art techniques, are often found to be inadequate to produce a correct fingerprint of the nature of magnetic interactions therein. This work suggests a new scheme to estimate exchange coupling constants in such systems. In this strategy, distribution of spins on magnetic sites in the ground state of systems with multiple magnetic centers is computed. On the basis of this spin mapping, exchange coupling constants between specific pairs are estimated through BS-DFT approach while keeping all other paramagnetic atoms magnetically inactive. Nonetheless, the effect of magnetically inert paramagnetic sites is already taken into account by the process of spin mapping, which is further justified through expressing the HDVV Hamiltonian in terms of spin density operators. We employ this technique to hypothetical benchmark systems, H(3)He(3) and H(4)He(4) followed by real molecules, cationic manganese trimer, 1,3,5-benzenetriyltris (N-tert-butyl nitroxide), and a pentanuclear manganese complex. Results are found to be concordant with the already established nature of magnetic interaction in these systems. This strategy is different from the most popular scheme to compute J in systems with multiple magnetic centers in the sense that it avoids the formation of a large matrix out of different spin configurations and thus provides a reliable and computationally economic way to address the magnetic interactions in non isotropic systems with multiple magnetic sites.
