The diversification of tapeworms of the subfamily Gangesiinae (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae), parasites of catfishes (order Siluriformes), is assessed using molecular and morphological evidence. A two-gene (lsrDNA and COI) phylogenetic analysis of all species of Gangesiinae (except Gangesia margolisi) resulted in a basal polytomy that included several lineages of Gangesiinae and Acanthotaeniinae. Palaeogeological events, along with host-shifting and dispersal, played prominent roles in the evolution of these tapeworms. Gangesia radiated through two major lineages in the Indomalayan and Palaearctic regions. Morphological changes during this radiation also included secondary loss of diagnostic morphological features of the genus, as in Gangesia mukutmanipurensis sp. nov., which lacks hooks and hooklets on its scolex. An updated key to the genera placed in Gangesiinae is provided and two new synonyms are proposed. A basal polytomy involving some of the potentially oldest lineages of Gangesiinae prevents firm conclusions regarding the ancestral area of origin of these tapeworms. Nevertheless, when the distribution and host-associations of Gangesiinae are considered in the context of the historical biogeography of their catfish hosts, the Indomalayan region appears to have been the ancestral homeland and a major centre of diversification of these tapeworms, with range expansions in western and northern parts of Eurasia and Africa.

Monozoic tapeworms (Caryophyllidea) are dominant components of parasite communities of suckers (Catostomidae) in North America, with Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927 representing one of the more species-rich genera. Molecular (28S rDNA) and morphological (including scanning electron microscopy and histology) evaluation of newly collected tapeworms from different fish hosts revealed the existence of four similar (and three closely related) species of Biacetabulum. These four species differ from their congeners by having a long body (up to 48 mm long) with a very long, slender neck (its length represents ≥30% of total body length), a large, globular scolex with a prominent central acetabulum-like loculus on the dorsal and ventral sides, two pairs of shallow lateral loculi and a distinct, slightly convex apical disc, and a cirrus-sac that is situated between the anterior arms of the ovarian wings. Taken together, the morphological and molecular data and the host associations of these species provide evidence of their host specificity. Biacetabulum isaureae n. sp. occurs in notch clip redhorse, Moxostoma collapsum, in South Carolina (USA), B. longicollum n. sp. in silver redhorse, Moxostoma anisurum (type host), and golden redhorse, M. erythrurum, in Manitoba (Canada) and West Virginia (USA), B. overstreeti n. sp. in a spotted sucker, Minytrema melanops, in Mississippi, and B. hypentelii n. sp. in northern hogsucker, Hypentelium nigricans, in Tennessee (USA). The new species differ from each other in the number of postovarian vitelline follicles, the posterior extent of preovarian vitelline follicles and relative size of the cirrus sac.

Based on morphological and molecular data, a new species of tapeworm, Bothriocephalus kupermani n. sp., is described from pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (type host), and green sunfish, L. cyanellus Rafinesque, 1819 (Actinopterygii: Centrarchidae) in the United States. The new species differs from its North American congeners mainly in the shape of its scolex, which is almost rectangular in dorsoventral and lateral views (nearly parallel margins in the bothrial region), with shallow, wide bothria, and by an extensive field of vitelline follicles that are also variably present, albeit more sparsely, medially in the cortex of the ovarian and uterine areas. This tapeworm appears to be typically associated with Lepomis sunfishes. Examination of museum specimens of Bothriocephalus species from Lepomis spp. indicates that the tapeworm also parasitizes bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, and that previous records of Bothriocephalus cuspidatus and Bothriocephalus claviceps in these fishes are of the new species, B. kupermani.

A new genus

Host-specific parasites exhibit close co-evolutionary associations with their hosts. In the case of fragmented/disjunct host distribution, host-specific parasites may reflect the biogeographical history of regions and/or the role played by contacts of hosts. The present study was focused on Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) species almost exclusively parasitizing cyprinoid fishes. We investigated the phylogenetic relationships between Dactylogyrus parasites of Nearctic cyprinoids (Leuciscidae) and Dactylogyrus parasites of Palearctic cyprinoids and used Dactylogyrus phylogeny to explore the biogeography of fish hosts in Europe and North America. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that two Nearctic clades of Dactylogyrus spp. have different origins. Historical contacts between European and North American leuciscids were accompanied by the host switching of Dactylogyrus species. In the Nearctic region, Dactylogyrus parasites also colonized non-leuciscid fishes. Dactylogyrus spp. of three Nearctic leuciscid clades were included in the phylogenetic reconstruction; only Dactylogyrus spp. of the Plagopterinae had a common origin. Dactylogyrus species did not reflect the phylogenetic relationships among leuciscid clades, suggesting that past co-diversification was overshadowed by colonization events mediated by paleogeographic and climatological changes and extensive drainage reorganization. Host-specific monogeneans serve as a supplementary tool to reveal the historical biogeographical contacts between freshwater fish from the North America and Europe and also contemporary contacts of leuciscids in North America.

The Asian fish tapeworm (Schyzocotyle acheilognathi syn. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi) (AFT) is an invasive parasite that can infect many species of fish, although most hosts are primarily members of Cyprinidae. Pathogenicity has most often been reported in aquaculture settings in fry and fingerling stages of carp (Cyprinus spp.). More recently, it has been shown to cause growth retardation in the endangered bonytail chub (Gila elegans) and found to be widespread in populations of endangered humpback chub (Gila cypha) in the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arizona. AFT spreads most often through the transport of infected fish, particularly baitfish. Despite its harmful potential, there is no efficient or accurate ante mortem test to detect AFT in water or fish samples before transport. Herein, we report on the development of a sensitive and specific loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay to detect the parasite in under 30 min from laboratory prepared samples. Six LAMP primers were designed to amplify a variable region of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene in AFT with the detection and quantification of DNA on a real-time fluorometer. The limit of detection was 1 × 101 copies/μl of DNA extracted from as few as 2 AFT eggs. Future application of our assay would be a low-cost test to rapidly and accurately detect AFT DNA from environmental samples on-site so that preventive actions can be taken to halt the spread of the AFT through the movement of infected fish.

Adult specimens of the allocreadiid trematode Acrolichanus auriculatus (Wedl, 1858) were collected from Acipenser schrenckii Brandt from the River Amur and Amur Estuary, Acipenser ruthenus L. from the Rivers Irtysh and Oka (Asian and European parts of Russia, respectively), and Acipenser fulvescens Rafinesque from Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, USA, and used for phylogenetic analyses based on 28S rDNA sequence data. The results supported the monophyly of Acrolichanus populations from both continents and a clear separation of A. auriculatus from other allocreadiid taxa, thus supporting the validity of the genus Acrolichanus Ward, 1917. This study formally reestablishes the genus Acrolichanus. Species of this genus differ from other allocreadiids by the following combination of morphological features: triangular mouth opening with rounded posterior corners, simple ventral, dorsolateral and dorsomedian muscular lobes on the oral sucker, stout cirrus-sac, pars prostatica with dorsal pocket, and massive cirrus with conspicuous triradiate lumen when invaginated. Specimens of the trematode from North America and the Rivers Irtysh and Oka were more closely related to each other than to the specimens from River Amur and Amur Estuary. This reflects the evolutionary divergence among sturgeons into Pacific and Atlantic clades. The phylogenetic analyses also confirmed the paraphyly of the genus Crepidostomum Braun, 1900.

Between April 2011 and November 2020, 175 individuals of western creek chubsucker Erimyzon claviformis (Girard) (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) were collected and examined for parasites from 12 sites in the Ouachita, Red, St. Francis, and White river drainages in Arkansas (n = 138 individuals for endoparasites, 22 of same individuals for gill parasites) and from 4 sites in the Red River drainage in Oklahoma (n = 37 individuals for endoparasites, 14 of same individuals for gill parasites). Ninety-nine (57%) were infected with at least 1 parasite, including 2 (6%) of 36 with Piscinoodinium limneticum, 8 (22%) of 36 with 3 different Myxobolus spp., 4 (11%) of 36 with Octomacrum lanceatum, 40 (23%) of 175 with Plagioporus sinitsini, 30 (17%) of 175 with Lissorchis amniculensis, 38 (21%) of 175 with Calientiella etnieri, 3 (2%) of 175 with Isoglaridacris cf. agminis, 10 (6%) of 175 with larval Spiroxys sp., and 1 (0.6%) of 175 with a Neoechinorhynchus sp.; 31 individuals harbored multiple infections. We document several new host and distributional records. Moreover, this report represents only the second published report of the caryophyllid tapeworm C. etnieri since its description more than 46 yr ago.

Tapeworms (Cestoda) of the Proteocephalus-species aggregate from cyprinoids, pike, eel, smelt and cavefish in the Nearctic region (North America) are reviewed, based on a critical examination of newly collected and museum specimens. For some species neither new nor museum specimens were available and only literature data were used for these taxa. Two species occur in North American cyprinoids: (i) Nearctic Proteocephalus buplanensis Mayes, 1976 in Semotilus atromaculatus (Mitchill) in the upper Mississippi River and Hudson Bay drainage basins, and (ii) Holarctic P. torulosus (Batsch, 1786) (syns. P. ptychocheilus Faust, 1919; P. cobraeformis Haderlie, 1953; and Ophiotaenia critica Mpoame & Landers, 1981, new synonym), which occurs in Ptychocheilus spp. and other leuciscids in the western part of North America. Proteocephalus pinguis La Rue, 1911 is a specific parasite of pike (Esox spp.), which is briefly redescribed here to establish its diagnostic morphological characteristics because the original description was based on a mixture of at least two species. In addition to P. pinguis, pike serve as postyclic hosts of several species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate typical of other fish, such as bass, perch and whitefish, namely P. fluviatilis Bangham, 1925, P. pearsei La Rue, 1919 and P. longicollis (Zeder, 1800). Cavefish (Amblyopsidae) in North America harbour two endemic species, P. chologasteri Whittaker & Hill, 1968 from Chologaster agassizii Putman and P. poulsoni Whittaker & Zober, 1978 from Amblyopsis spelaea DeKay, which have never been found since their original description and their validity should be confirmed based on new collections and molecular data. Two other species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate, P. macrocephalus (Creplin, 1825), a parasite of eels (Anguilla spp.), and P. tetrastomus (Rudolphi, 1810) from smelt (Osmeridae), have circumboreal (Holarctic) distribution. Molecular data are available only for three of the seven species treated herein, but they do not form a monophyletic group.

Morphological and molecular evaluation of tapeworms of the genus Bothriocephalus Rudolphi, 1808 (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidea), based on newly collected and uniformly fixed worms from freshwater fishes in Canada and the United States has revealed unexpected diversity. With a combination of selected morphological features and 4 molecular markers (18S rDNA V8 region, ITS1, ITS2, and COI gene sequences), the following morphotypes and lineages of the Bothriocephalus cuspidatus Cooper, 1917 complex were identified, several of which are specific to their respective fish definitive hosts and may represent separate species: B. cuspidatus sensu stricto from walleye, Sander vitreus (type host), which likely includes a miniature morphotype from Johnny darter, Etheostoma nigrum (both Percidae); Bothriocephalus morphotype from pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae); and Bothriocephalus morphotype from rock bass, Ambloplites rupestris (Centrarchidae). The Bothriocephalus morphotype from goldeye, Hiodon alosoides (Hiodontidae), may also represent a separate lineage (possibly Bothriocephalus texomensisSelf, 1954) but requires additional studies. A morphotype from smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, based on a single specimen, is morphologically and genetically very similar to the morphotype from rock bass. Morphological study of the scolex and strobila of heat-killed and fixed specimens has revealed consistent differences, often subtle, that allowed us to differentiate between these morphotypes.

A survey of the species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate from sticklebacks (Actinopterygii: Gasterosteidae) is provided. The occurrence of three species in North America is confirmed: (i) Proteocephalus filicollis (Rudolphi, 1802), which has been reported from the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, in the northeastern part of North America (Newfoundland); (ii) Proteocephalus pugetensis Hoff et Hoff, 1929 occurs also in G. aculeatus, but in northwestern North America (British Columbia and Washington); and (iii) Proteocephalus culaeae sp. n., which is described from the brook stickleback, Culaea inconstans (Kirtland), in Manitoba (Canada). Another species, Proteocephalus ambiguus (Dujardin, 1845), a specific parasite of the nine-spined stickleback, Pungitius pungitius (Linnaeus), and type species of the genus, has also been found in North America (Alberta, Canada), but its vouchers are in poor condition and cannot be reliable assigned to this species. Both species reported from three-spined stickleback differ from each other by the shape of the scolex (rounded in P. filicollis versus continuously tapered towards the anterior extremity in P. pugetensis) and the apical sucker (widely oval to subspherical in frontal view in P. filicollis versus flattened in P. pugetensis). Proteocephalus culaeae sp. n. is characterised by a short body composed of a few, continuously widened proglottids, a short scolex narrower than the strobila and devoid of an apical sucker, a short, pyriform cirrus sac, no vaginal sphincter, and few testes. A key to species of the Proteocephalus-aggregate from sticklebacks is provided.

Ictalurid catfishes (Siluriformes) in North America harbor proteocephalid tapeworms of the subfamily Corallobothriinae. Type species of 2 of 3 genera of these tapeworms from ictalurids are redescribed, based on museum and newly collected material. Essexiella fimbriata (Essex, 1928) is typified mainly by a wide, umbrella-shaped scolex with a metascolex formed by numerous folds of tissue, anteriorly directed suckers without sphincters, vitellarium bent inwards posteriorly, "flower-shaped" uterus (with anterior, lateral, and posterior diverticula), and a conspicuously pre-equatorial genital atrium. Verified host records of this cestode are only from 3 species of Ictalurus Rafinesque, 1820. Megathylacoides giganteum (Essex, 1928), which seems to be specific to the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), possesses a globular scolex, with a weakly developed metascolex formed by tissue folds posterior to the suckers, anterolaterally directed suckers with large semilunar sphincters, proglottids that are widest at the level of the genital atrium at the anterior third of the proglottid, and uterine diverticula that do not reach the vitelline follicles laterally. A new subfamily, Essexiellinae Scholz and Barcak, is proposed to accommodate species of EssexiellaScholz, de Chambrier, Mariaux and Kuchta, 2011 (type genus), MegathylacoidesJones, Kerley and Sneed, 1956, and CorallotaeniaFreze, 1965 from ictalurid catfishes in the Nearctic Region. These tapeworms possess a metascolex, medullary genital organs, uterus lined with numerous chromophilic cells, pre-equatorial genital atrium, and uterine development of type 2. The new subfamily was monophyletic in all molecular phylogenetic analyses, being most closely related to 3 Neotropical proteocephalids from the redtail catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), but distant from all remaining proteocephalid tapeworms from freshwater fishes in North America.

A comparative study of the scoleces of monozoic tapeworms (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of catostomid and cyprinid fishes (Teleostei: Cypriniformes) in the Nearctic Region, was carried out using light and scanning electron microscopy. Scoleces of 22 genera of North American caryophyllideans were characterised and their importance for taxonomy, classification and phylogenetic studies was critically reviewed. Nearctic genera exhibit a much higher variation in the shape and form of scoleces compared with taxa in other biogeographical regions. The following basic scolex types can be recognised in Nearctic caryophyllideans: monobothriate (Promonobothrium Mackiewicz, 1968), loculotruncate (Promonobothrium, Dieffluvium Williams, 1978), bothrioloculodiscate (Archigetes Leuckart, 1878, Janiszewskella Mackiewicz et Deutsch, 1976, Penarchigetes Mackiewicz, 1969, Pseudoglaridacris Oros, Uhrovič et Scholz, 2018), fixomegabothriate (Capingens Hunter, 1927), bulbate and bulboacuminate (Atractolytocestus Anthony, 1958), cuneiloculate (Hypocaryophyllaeus Hunter, 1927, Rowardleus Mackiewicz et Deutsch, 1976, Spartoides Hunter, 1929), biacetabulate, bulboloculate, bothrioloculodiscate (Biacetabulum Hunter, 1927), tholate (Hunterella Mackiewicz et McCrae, 1962), cuneifimbriate (Khawia Hsü, 1935), cuneiform (Calentinella Mackiewicz, 1974, Caryophyllaeides Nybelin, 1922, Edlintonia Mackiewicz, 1970), hastate (Pseudolytocestus Hunter, 1929), loculotholate (Bialovarium Fischthal, 1953, Pliovitellaria Fischthal, 1951), and cuneiformoloculate (Glaridacris Cooper, 1920, Isoglaridacris Mackiewicz, 1965). The same type of scolex may be shared by species of different genera or families and species of the same genus can have a scolex of conspicuously different morphology, e.g. in Promonobothrium. Scolex morphology may be therefore of limited use in generic designation.

The Asian fish tapeworm (AFT), Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, is a notorious and highly successful invasive parasite reported in a wide spectrum of freshwater fishes, and new reports of its spread continue to emerge. To date, no thorough review of its worldwide distribution and host associations is available. In the present work, we collected information from 651 articles up until 2017, from which we updated the number of the hosts to 312 fish species and 11 non-fish species, which is quite unusual among helminths. The AFT has spread to all but one continent (Antarctica). The highest number of records are from North America, followed by Asia and Europe. A key feature of its invasive success is its broad environmental tolerance.

The freshwater fish faunas of the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions show similarities but also notable differences, resulting in diverse distributions of their parasites. Relatively few parasite species occur in both regions and fewer still have been examined using molecular data. We report a rare example of 'amphi-Pacific' distribution, involving the common Palaearctic parasite, the caryophyllidean cestode Caryophyllaeides fennica (Schneider, 1902), in the chiselmouth Acrocheilus alutaceus Agassiz and Pickering, 1855, an endemic cyprinid in northwestern Nearctic, Oregon. Available information on nonnative fish species in Oregon suggests that the parasite is native to the area and not introduced. Molecular data (18S ribosomal [r]DNA, 28S rDNA, internal transcribed spacer 2, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene) indicate very little genetic divergence between representatives from the Palaearctic and Nearctic, and possibly a relatively more recent colonization of the Nearctic region by this cestode via the Beringian land bridge. This is remarkable considering that Acrocheilus has reportedly been in Oregon since the Miocene.

Species of the allocreadiid genus Creptotrema are parasites of freshwater fishes in the Americas. Species in the genus possess one pair of muscular oral lobes on the oral sucker. Currently, the genus contains eight species, six distributed in South America, one in Middle America and one in North America. Genetic data are only available for the North American species, Creptotrema funduli, a parasite of fundulids originally described from Oneida Lake, New York State. In this study, we obtained 28S ribosomal DNA sequences of trematodes morphologically similar to Creptotrema agonostomi from the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola, across a wide geographical range in Middle America. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses showed that (1) the genus Creptotrema, as currently conceived, is not monophyletic; (2) the allocreadiids in mountain mullets should be re-allocated in the genus Pseudoparacreptotrema; and (3) the allocreadiid trematodes from D. monticola across Middle America represent four morphologically similar species, three of which can be distinguished genetically. These three new species are described herein using an integrative taxonomy approach. We contend that accurate estimates of species diversity and phylogenetic relationships among allocreadiids, and most likely other species of trematodes, necessarily require an integrative taxonomy approach that should consider at least DNA sequences and scanning electron microscopy.

We used odds ratios and a hurdle model to analyze parasite co-infections over 25 years on >20,000 young-of-the year of endangered Shortnose and Lost River Suckers. Host ecologies differed as did parasite infections. Shortnose Suckers were more likely to be caught inshore and 3–5 times more likely to have Bolbophorus spp. and Contracaecum sp. infections, and Lost River Suckers were more likely to be caught offshore and approximately three times more likely to have Lernaea cyprinacea infections. An observed peak shift seems likely to be due to a lower host size limit for Bolbophorus spp. (13.6 mm) compared with L. cyprinacea (23.4 mm). The large data set allowed us to generate strong hypotheses: (i) that a major marsh restoration project had unintended consequences that resulted in an increase in infections; (ii) that co-infection with Bolbophorus spp. increased the odds of infection by L. cyprinacea and Contracaecum sp.; (iii) that significant declines in the odds of infection over approximately 25 days were due to parasite-induced host mortality; (iv) that the fish’s small size relative to L. cyprinacea and Contracaecum sp. might be directly lethal; (v) that the absence of L. cyprinacea infections in the early 1990s was associated with good year-class production of the suckers; and (vi) that parasites might increase the odds of vagrancy from the nursery ground.

We examine the extent to which adult helminths of freshwater fishes have been part of the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI), by integrating information in published studies and new data from Panama with fish biogeography and Earth history of Middle America. The review illustrates the following: (1) the helminth fauna south of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, and especially south of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, shows strong Neotropical affinities; (2) host–parasite associations follow principles of the ‘biogeographic core fauna’ in which host-lineage specificity is pronounced; (3) phylogenetic analysis of the widespread freshwater trematode family Allocreadiidae reveals a complex history of host-shifting and co-diversification involving mainly cyprinodontiforms and characids; (4) allocreadiids, monogeneans and spiruridan nematodes of Middle American cyprinodontiforms may provide clues to the evolutionary history of their hosts; and (5) phylogenetic analyses of cryptogonimid trematodes may reveal whether or how cichlids interacted with marine or brackish-water environments during their colonization history. The review shows that ‘interchange’ is limited and asymmetrical, but simple narratives of northward isthmian dispersal will likely prove inadequate to explain the historical biogeography of many host–parasite associations in tropical Middle America, particularly those involving poeciliids. Finally, our study highlights the urgent need for targeted survey work across Middle America, focused sampling in river drainages of Colombia and Venezuela, and deeper strategic sampling in other parts of South America, in order to develop and test robust hypotheses about fish–parasite associations in Middle America.

Nematodes are common in the parasite communities of North American freshwater fishes, and the majority of them belong to 1 conventional order, Spirurida Chitwood, 1933. Within the Spirurida, the superfamilies Habronematoidea Chitwood and Wehr, 1932 and Thelazioidea Sobolev, 1949 have undergone considerable diversification. The dominant families of these 2 superfamilies, Cystidicolidae Skrjabin 1946 and Rhabdochonidae Railliet, 1916, respectively, are particularly common, widely distributed, and diverse, especially in North America, yet their phylogenetic relationships remain largely unexplored. In this study, we use near complete sequences of the 18S rRNA genes ( SSU rDNA) from species in 6 genera ( Capillospirura Skrjabin, 1924, Cystidicola Fischer, 1798, Salmonema Moravec, Santos and Brasil-Sato, 2008, Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916, Spinitectus Fourment, 1883, and a putative new cystidicolid in mooneyes, Hiodontidae), along with a species of Hedruris Nitzsch, 1812 from newts as a surrogate for the fish parasite Hedruris tiara VanCleave and Mueller, 1932, to explore their phylogenetic relationships. These sequences, together with available sequences from a range of other nematodes, including fish nematodes in other groups (Camallanoidea and 'Seuratoidea'), were analyzed using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood. The results from both analyses indicate, for the first time, support for the close relationships of the sturgeon parasite Capillospirura with Ascarophis van Beneden, 1871 and Cystidicola; the relationship of the cystidicolid from Hiodontidae with Salmonema of salmonid fishes; the monophyly of the 2 dominant spiruridan genera of fishes, Rhabdochona and Spinitectus; and for previous relationships among Nearctic Spinitectus spp. The results also indicate a closer relationship of Rhabdochona and Spinitectus than is suggested by their conventional classification and reject the monophyly of Habronematoidea, Thelazioidea, and Cystidicolidae. Hedruridae appears to be an early branching lineage of spirurins. Finally, the pattern of association between the fish parasites in this study and their hosts indicates, with few exceptions, ecologically driven diversification events involving host shifting not related to the phylogenetic relationships of their hosts.

In this paper, we review, continent by continent, the trematode fauna of freshwater fishes of the 'Old World', a vast area consisting of the Palaearctic, Ethiopian, Oriental and Australasian zoogeographical regions. Knowledge of this fauna is highly uneven and clearly incomplete for almost all regions, sometimes dramatically so. Although the biggest problem remains the completion of the 'first pass' of alpha taxonomy, there are in addition great problems relating to biogeography and elucidation of life-cycles. For the latter, molecular data, i.e. matching DNA sequences of larval stages and corresponding adults, may represent a powerful tool that should be used in future studies. Another challenging problem represents the existence of cryptic species and, in particular, considerable decrease of experts in taxonomy and life-cycles of trematodes.

The phylogenetic relationships of Cucullanidae were explored using near-complete sequences of the 18S rDNA (rRNA gene). Sequences (1,750-1,760 bp) were obtained from 7 species of Cucullanidae belonging to 3 genera, Cucullanus (2 spp.), Dichelyne (2 spp.), Truttaedacnitis (3 spp.), and 1 species of Quimperiidae ( Paraseuratum sp.). These sequences were aligned with those of 128 other nematode species available in GenBank, including 3 other cucullanids (Dichelyne mexicanus, Cucullanus robustus, and Cucullanus baylisi) and 2 non-cucullanid seuratoids (Paraquimperia africana, and Linstowinema sp.). Bayesian (BPP) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses of 2 different datasets strongly supported a monophyletic Cucullanidae. Bayesian analysis placed this family as the sister group to a clade containing species of Diplogasterida, Strongylida, Rhabditida, and Tylenchida with very strong support. Neither BPP nor ML analyses recovered a close relationship of Cucullanidae to Ascaridida. None of the 3 non-cucullanid seuratoid species were sister to Cucullanidae, nor did they form a monophyletic group of their own, which questions the monophyly of Seuratoidea and the relationships among species within this superfamily. The 3 genera of cucullanids were also not monophyletic, although morphologically similar species such as the 2 species of Cucullanus from Neotropical catfishes and 2 species of Dichelyne from Nearctic ictalurid catfishes were sister taxa with strong support. The results were ambiguous with respect to the relationship of 2 Truttaedacnitis spp. in Nearctic freshwater fishes but do not support Truttaedacnitis heterodonti, a parasite of heterodontid sharks, as belonging to this genus. The study shows that all aspects of the conventional classification of Seuratoidea and its taxa should be scrutinized by even more extensive sampling across hosts and habitats.

Pomphorhynchus purhepechus n. sp. is described from the intestine of the Mexican redhorse Moxostoma austrinum Bean (Catostomidae) in central Mexico. The new species can be distinguished from the other seven described species of Pomphorhynchus Monticelli, 1905 in the Americas by a subspherical proboscis and 14 longitudinal rows with 16-18 hooks each; the third and the fourth row of hooks are alternately longest. Sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene and the large subunit (LSU) rDNA (including the domains D2-D3) were used to corroborate the morphological distinction between the new species and Pomphorhynchus bulbocolli Linkins in Van Cleave, 1919, a species widely distributed in several freshwater fish species across Canada, USA, and Mexico. The genetic divergence estimated between the new species and the isolates of P. bulbocolli ranged between 13 and 14% for cox1, and between 0.6 and 0.8% for LSU. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of each dataset showed that the isolates of P. bulbocolli parasitising freshwater fishes from three families, the Catostomidae, Cyprinidae and Centrarchidae, represent a separate lineage, and that the acanthocephalans collected from two localities in central Mexico comprise an independent lineage. In addition, our analysis of the genetic variation of P. bulbocolli demonstrates that individuals of this acanthocephalan from different host species are conspecific. Finally, the distribution, host-association, and phylogenetic relationship of the new species, when placed in the context of the region's geological history, suggest that both host and parasite underwent speciation after their ancestors became isolated in Central Mexico.

Lissorchis nelsoni (Trematoda: Lissorchiidae) is described from the intestines of the spotted sucker, Minytrema melanops (Rafinesque) from the Wolf River in central Wisconsin and from Navigation Pools 8 and 9 of the upper Mississippi River near La Crosse and Genoa, Wisconsin. It is readily distinguished from all other species of Lissorchis by a combination of its surface structures, massive cirrus sac bent at an angle (often almost an inverted “L”), bipartite seminal vesicle, large acetabulum, a trilobed ovary, its vitellarium, and a type B uterine configuration, of which the cirrus sac is perhaps the most useful for stained material. It is morphologically similar to Lissorchis mutabile in having a similar size and body shape, similar number and arrangement of vitelline follicles, and a distinctly trilobed ovary. In addition to differences in the cirrus sac morphology, it also differs from L. mutabile in having an extensively coiled uterus that extends on both sides of the hindbody.

The invasive and potentially pathogenic Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, is reported for the first time from the vicinity of the Panama Canal zone, a region of international economic and environmental significance. The tapeworm was found in two cichlid species, Aequidens coeruleopunctatus and Cryptoheros panamensis in two tributaries of the Chagres River / Panama Canal drainage, Soberania National Park area, Panama. Sequence data from the ITS-1 region of the rRNA genome corroborate the identifications based on diagnostic morphological features. The tapeworm was not found in 201 of the other 15 species of fish belonging to 6 families that were collected during the same time. Using historical records, we argue that the tapeworm was likely introduced with the stocking of one of its principal hosts, grass carp, during early attempts to control aquatic vegetation in the Canal zone, and we predict that it is probably more widely distributed in the area, especially in Gatun Lake. The impact of this tapeworm on the native fish resources of Panama remains unknown, but is noteworthy for its presence in an already ecologically impacted region of the Neotropics.

A form of Plagioporus Stafford, 1904 is described from the intestine of three North American species of darters (Perciformes: Percidae) from River West Twin, Wisconsin, USA, that we consider to be conspecific with Plagioporus boleosomi (Pearse, 1924) Peters, 1957 based on similarities in the sucker ratio, extent of the forebody, shape and position of the testes, vitellarium distribution and terminal genitalia. Three new species of Plagioporus are described from the intestine of darters as follows: Plagioporus fonti n. sp. from Percina nigrofasciata Agassiz in Florida, USA, Plagioporus limus n. sp. from Etheostoma squamosum Distler in Arkansas, USA and Plagioporus aliffi n. sp. from Etheostoma blennioides newmanni Miller in Arkansas, USA. Morphologically Plagioporus fonti n. sp., Plagioporus limus n. sp. and Plagioporus aliffi n. sp. are most similar to one another and to P. boleosomi, Plagioporus lepomis Dobrovolny, 1939 and 'P. etheostomae', a nomen nudum for a species described from Etheostoma blennioides Rafinesque in Kentucky, USA, all of which are collectively distinguished from congeners in having a combination of confluent vitellarium in the post-testicular space and absence of vitelline follicles with their entire length distributed in the forebody. Plagioporus fonti n. sp., P. limus n. sp. and P. aliffi n. sp. are respectively distinguished from one another and their closest congeners in having the anterior extent of the vitellarium in the anterior half of forebody to slightly anterior to the ventral sucker as opposed to one approximately at the level of the posterior margin of the ventral sucker, possession of an excretory vesicle reaching the anterior testis as opposed to one only reaching the posterior testis and having a longer than wide oral sucker and a wider than long ventral sucker. A Bayesian inference (BI) analysis of partial 28S rDNA sequences was conducted using the three new species and 24 sequences of opecoelids retrieved from GenBank, including ten species of Plagioporus. Plagioporus aliffi n. sp., Plagioporus fonti n. sp. and P. boleosomi comprised a moderately supported sister group to a clade containing all species of Plagioporus except Plagioporus limus n. sp. and Plagioporus shawi (Mcintosh, 1939) Margolis, 1970. Plagioporus limus and in turn P. shawi were resolved as sister to all other congeners with high and moderate support, respectively.

As part of the endangered humpback chub (HBC; Gila cypha ) Adaptive Management Program, a parasite survey was conducted from 28 June to 17 July 2006 in 8 tributaries and 7 adjacent sections of the main stem of the Colorado River, U.S.A. In total, 717 fish were caught, including 24 HBC. Field necropsies yielded 19 parasite species, 5 of which (Achtheres sp., Kathlaniidae gen. sp., Caryophyllaidae gen. sp., Myxidium sp., and Octomacrum sp.) are new records for Grand Canyon, Arizona, U.S.A. Spearman's correlation coefficient analyses showed no correlations between parasite burden and fork length for various combinations of fish and parasite species. Regression analyses suggest that no parasite species had a strong effect on fish length. The most diverse parasite community (n = 14) was at river kilometer (Rkm) 230, near the confluence of Kanab Creek. The most diverse parasite infracommunity (n = 12) was found in the non-native channel catfish (CCF; Ictaluris punctatus). Overall parasite prevalence was highest in CCF (85%) followed by that in HBC (58%). The parasite fauna of humpback chub was mainly composed of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi and Ornithodiplostomum sp. metacercariae.

A new species of the recently erected genus of proteocephalid cestodes, Synbranchiella Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , is described based on specimens found in the mountain mullet, Dajaus monticola (Bancroft, 1834), from Costa Rica. The new species is placed in Synbranchiella because of the cortical position of the genital organs (typical of the former subfamily Monticelliinae); a robust scolex (lacking a metascolex) having a dome-shaped apex and biloculate suckers (lacking free posterior margins); vitelline follicles in 2 narrow lateral bands; a vagina always anterior to the cirrus-sac; and a genital pore that is markedly pre-equatorial, i.e., close to the anterior margin of proglottids. The new species, Synbranchiella megacirrus, differs from the type and only other species of the genus, Synbranchiella mabelae Arredondo, Alves and Gil de Pertierra, 2017 , that infects the marbled swamp eel, Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, 1795, in Argentina by the absence of preporal vitelline follicles (present in S. mabelae); a well-developed, large, elongate vaginal sphincter (small and ring-like in S. mabelae); and a large cirrus-sac relative to the proglottid size (cirrus-sac length is on average 48% of the proglottid width in S. megacirrus vs. 31% in the latter species). This is the first adult tapeworm reported from mountain mullet and the first record of the genus outside of South America, thereby greatly extending the range of distribution of species of Synbranchiella.

Partial sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) genes were compared among populations of a widely distributed and morphologically uniform digenean species in North America, Phyllodistomum lacustri, a parasite characteristically associated with ictalurid catfishes. Specimens were collected from the urinary bladder of ictalurid hosts in six localities of North America, spanning most of the latitudinal range of this freshwater fish group. Sequences of other congeneric species, including a potentially close relative, P. staffordi, were also obtained and used for comparison. Analyses of both molecular markers show very low or no intrapopulation variation within each sampling site. However, samples of P. lacustri from different hosts and regions exhibit varying levels of interpopulation genetic differences. Such differences are explained by the wide geographical distribution and host range of the ictalurids they parasitize, particularly in ictalurids distributed in Mexican freshwaters where they experienced a diversification process. Variation in both nuclear and mitochondrial genes and phylogenetic analyses, in conjunction with geographical and host information (drainage isolation and endemicity of the host species), indicate that at least three populations show potential as cryptic species.

Plagioporus kolipinskii n. sp. (Trematoda: Opecoelidae) is described from the intestine of the threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., from Lobos Creek, a freshwater stream in Presidio, San Francisco County, California. Plagioporus kolipinskii is morphologically somewhat similar to 4 (P. serotinus , P. angusticollis , P. macrouterinus , and P. shawi []) of the 12 currently recognized North American species of the genus, but can be readily distinguished from all 4 in possessing a much larger acetabulum and a larger ovary relative to the testes. In addition, the new species can be distinguished from P. angusticollis by a smaller cirrus sac; from P. macrouterinus by the elongated shape of its body and reduced extent of its uterus (the uterus of P. macrouterinus extends posteriorly to the intersection of the testes); from P. shawi by a much-shorter cirrus sac (which reaches the ovary in P. shawi), an unlobed ovary (as opposed to a quadrilobed ovary in P. shawi), and fewer eggs that are also larger relative to body size.

Ictalurid catfishes represent a family of freshwater fishes exclusively North American in distribution. The Balsas catfish, Ictalurus balsanus, is endemic to the Balsas River drainage in central Mexico, which flows to the Pacific Ocean. In this article we present the helminth fauna of this catfish through a survey along its distributional range in the Balsas River basin. Between December 2003 and May 2006, 148 specimens of I. balsanus were collected from 10 localities in the Balsas River drainage. In total, 10 species of helminths were found, including 2 digeneans, 2 cestodes, and 6 nematodes. These parasites correspond to 4 larval forms (Eustrongylides sp., Contracaecum sp., Serpinema trispinosum, and Clinostomum complanatum) and 6 adults (Creptotrema agonostomi, Rhabdochona canadensis, Dichelyne (Dichelyne) mexicanus, Raillietnema kritscheri, Megathylacoides lamothei, and Monticellidae gen. sp.). The systematic relationships of aspinose allocreadiid-like digeneans from Middle-American and Neotropical freshwater fishes, such as Wallinia Pearse, 1920, Margotrema Lamothe-Argumedo, 1970, Magnivitellinum Kloss, 1966 and other related genera, remain enigmatic. Wallinia (2 spp.) and Margotrema (2 spp.) have been placed in the subfamily Walliniinae, within the Macroderoididae. Recent descriptions of species in these genera have followed this classification but have raised questions about their affinities with macroderoidids. Partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene of Wallinia chavarriae Choudhury, Hartvigsen & Brooks, 2002 and Margotrema bravoae Lamothe Argumedo, 1970, as representatives of their genera, were used in a phylogenetic analysis along with the available sequences of macroderoidids and allocreadiids. Results from Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Analyses were identical in placing both genera into one clade along with allocreadiids rather than the macroderoidids. Margotrema was the sister group of Crepidostomum Braun, 1900, and Wallinia was the sister group of both Margotrema and Crepidostomum combined. Bootstrap and Bremer values, as well as posterior probabilities derived from Bayesian analysis strongly supported these relationships in three analyses.

Monozoic cestodes of the recently amended genus Promonobothrium Mackiewicz, 1968 (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), parasites of suckers (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) in North America, are reviewed, with information on their host specificity, distribution and data on the scolex morphology of seven species studied for the first time using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Evaluation of type and voucher specimens from museum collections and newly collected material of most species indicated the following valid nominal species: Promonobothrium minytremi Mackiewicz, 1968 (type species); P. ingens (Hunter, 1927); P. hunteri (Mackiewicz, 1963); P. ulmeri (Calentine et Mackiewicz, 1966); P. fossae (Williams, 1974) and P. mackiewiczi (Williams, 1974). Rogersus Williams, 1980 with its only species R. rogersi is transferred to Promonobothrium based on morphological and molecular data. Promonobothrium currani sp. n. and P. papiliovarium sp. n. are described from Ictiobus bubalus (Rafinesque) and Ictiobus niger (Rafinesque), and Erimyzon oblongus (Mitchill), respectively. The newly described species can be distinguished from the other congeners by the morphology of the scolex, the position of the anteriormost vitelline follicles and testes, the presence of postovarian vitelline follicles and the shape of the ovary. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of six species based on sequences of the small and large subunits of the nuclear ribosomal RNA genes (ssrDNA, lsrDNA) confirmed the monophyletic status of the genus and supported the validity of the species analysed. A key to identification of all species of Promonobothrium based on morphological characteristics is provided.

This study investigates the systematics of Paracreptotrema Choudhury, Perez-Ponce de Leon, Brooks and Daverdin, 2006 using morphological data (stained whole mounts and scanning electron microscopy) and partial sequences of the 28S ribosomal rRNA gene, obtained from freshly collected material. In total, 484 specimens representing 4 species, i.e., Paracreptotrema blancoi (157), Paracreptotrema profundulusi (12), Paracreptotrema rosenthali (8), and Paracreptotrema blancoi sensu Salgado-Maldonado et al. (2011) (307) were collected. Existing museum depositions were also studied. The 28S rRNA gene sequences of these Paracreptotrema spp. were aligned, along with sequences from 22 other allocreadiids and 4 other non-allocreadiid xiphidiatan species. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses indicated a paraphyletic Paracreptotrema split into 3 clades: 1 comprising P. blancoi and P. rosenthali that was sister to a clade formed by 3 other species of allocreadiids (species of Wallinia, Creptotrematina, and Auriculostoma) typically found in characid fishes, a second clade formed solely by Paracreptotrema heterandriae as the sister taxon of the aforementioned species, and a third by P. profundulusi and specimens erroneously identified as P. blancoi. Two new taxa were erected to reflect these results: Paracreptotrematoides for Paracreptotrema heterandriae, and Pseudoparacreptotrema for Paracreptotrema profundulusi and P. macroacetabulata (the species erroneously identified as P. blancoi from profundulids across Middle America). Closer consideration of the morphology corroborates these findings. The revised systematics also indicated that Paracreptotrema spp. are found in poeciliids, whereas Pseudoparacreptotrema spp. parasitize profundulids. The study demonstrates the value of an integrative taxonomy approach to address the apparently complicated systematics of the allocreadiids.

A phylogenetic analysis of 40 species of Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916, including all 21 valid species in the Americas, resulted in 1733 equally most parsimonious trees and indicates that Rhabdochona is arguably monophyletic. Species from the Americas do not form a monophyletic group, since each of the six clades of Rhabdochona includes species from the Americas and species from other continents. The synapomorphies defining each clade stem from the morphology of the left spicule. Teeth number was consistent in one clade only, suggesting that this character, while useful for taxonomic purposes, is not indicative of phylogeny. Species of Rhabdochona associated with certain host groups, such as salmonids, catostomids and goodeids, do not always form monophyletic assemblages, nor do species associated with smaller discrete areas, such as the Mesa Central of Mexico. This indicates widespread host-switching rather than co-speciation as the main phenomenon in the evolution of this group, at least in the species from the Americas. Phylogenetic patterns reveal an ancient origin for the group that probably pre-dates current continental configurations.

Bothriocephalus acheilognathiYamaguti, 1934, a tapeworm known to be pathogenic to some fish species, has become established in the endangered humpback chub (Gila cypha Miller, 1964) in Grand Canyon, USA, following the tapeworm's introduction into the Colorado River system. The potential impact of this tapeworm on humpback chub was studied by exposing the closely related bonytail chub (Gila elegans Baird and Girard, 1853) to the parasite under a range of conditions that included potential stressors of humpback chub in their natal waters, such as abrupt temperature change and a limited food base. Survival of infected fish under low food rations was considerably lower than that of control fish, and mortality of infected fish began 20 days earlier. Growth of infected fish was signifi- cantly reduced, and negative changes in health condition indices were found. No significant negative impacts were re- vealed from the synergistic effects between temperature shock and infection. Bothriocephalus acheilognathi does present a potential threat to humpback chub in Grand Canyon and should be considered, along with conventional con- cerns involving altered flow regimes and predation, when management decisions are made concerning conservation of this endangered species. Glen Canyon Dam has greatly altered the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. The Little Colorado River (LCR) provides a small refuge of seasonally warm and turbid water that is thought to be more suitable than the Colorado River for endangered humpback chub Gila cypha. However, the LCR has low productivity and contains nonnative fishes and parasites, which pose a threat to humpback chub. The Colorado River hosts a different suite of nonnative fishes and is cold and clear but more productive. We compared condition factor (K), abdominal fat index (AFI), and presence and number of two introduced pathogenic parasites (Lernaea cyprinacea and Bothriocephalus acheilognathi) between juvenile (
