Animal breeding became a difficult science when numerous genes influenced economically significant features. The major source of genetic improvement is selection, and as such, the large generation intervals in these strategies lead to reduced rates of improvement. Therefore, breeding control, genetic improvement research, and selection processes are accelerated by genomic selection. This article regarding global research interest trends in genomic selection in animal breeding themes was examined using bibliometric analysis, which employed papers from 1993 to 2024 from the SCI-Expanded, SSCI, AHCI, and E-SCI indexes. Over the period of 31 years, the first 3,181 published articles on genomic selection in animal breeding were gathered. Additionally, the study displays trends in co-authorships according to nations and academic institutions as well as co-occurrences of author keywords. There have been more articles since 2010 about the use of genomic selection in animal breeding, building up a sizable library of work that will last until 2024. Among the top academics in the field are Calus MPL, Li J, and Wang Y. The most productive institutions were The United Kingdom's University of Edinburgh, Aarhus University (Denmark) and China Agricultural University. The current hotspots in this field of study include "selection," and "association," according to keyword co-occurrence and frequency analysis. China, the United States, Brazil, Canada, and United Kingdom are the top five countries that produced the most papers with the highest levels of international collaboration and networking. The main topics of current study include prediction, accuracy, association, traits, and selection. New techniques for selection, prediction, accuracy, traits, and association were developed as the discipline matured. Background: The aim of this study was to compare genetic gain and rate of inbreeding for different mass selection breeding programs with the aim of increasing larval body weight (LBW) in black soldier flies. The breeding programs differed in: (1) sampling of individuals for phenotyping (either random over the whole population or a fixed number per full sib family), (2) selection of adult flies for breeding (based on an adult individual's phenotype for LBW or random from larvae preselected based on LBW), and (3) mating strategy (mating in a group with unequal male contributions or controlled between two females and one male). In addition, the numbers of phenotyped and preselected larvae were varied. The sex of an individual was unknown during preselection and females had higher LBW, resulting in more females being preselected. Results: Selecting adult flies based on their phenotype for LBW increased genetic gain by 0.06 genetic standard deviation units compared to randomly selecting from the preselected larvae. Fixing the number of phenotyped larvae per family increased the rate of inbreeding by 0.15 to 0.20% per generation. Controlled mating compared to group mating decreased the rate of inbreeding by 0.02 to 0.03% per generation. Phenotyping more than 4000 larvae resulted in a lack of preselected males due to the sexual dimorphism. Preselecting both too few and too many larvae could negatively impact genetic gain, depending on the breeding program. Conclusions: A mass selection breeding programs in which the adult fly is selected based on their larval phenotype, breeding animals mate in a group and sampling larvae for phenotyping at random over the whole population is recommended for black soldier flies, considering the positive effect on rates of genetic gain and inbreeding. The number of phenotyped and preselected larvae should be calculated based on the expected female weight deviation to ensure sufficient male and female candidates are selected. In vitro embryo production is one of the main reproductive techniques used in dairy Gyr cattle. In addition, linear type measures are well characterized and have been used in dairy Gyr breed selection for the last 4 decades. The estimation of genetic parameters for the number of aspirated oocytes and in vitro-produced embryos associated with the linear type measures would support genetic progress for animal breeding programs toward embryo production. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for aspirated oocytes, embryo in vitro production, and linear type traits, exploring the association between them. The repeatability model was applied to 14,251 ovum pick-up events from 1,916 Gyr donors. A subset of 604 donors from the same group had their body measurements taken. Single- and 2-trait analyses were carried out using the BLUPF90 family programs. Heritability estimates of 0.38, 0.34, and 0.20 were obtained for total oocytes, viable oocytes, and embryos, respectively, and the heritability of the linear type traits ranged from 0.22 to 0.40. High genetic correlations between total oocytes and viable oocytes (0.99), and between oocytes (total and viable) and embryos (0.83) were obtained. Low to high genetic (−0.07 to 0.92) and phenotypic (0.32–0.86) correlations were obtained between the linear type traits. Moreover, low phenotypic correlations (0.01–0.13) were observed for oocytes (total and viable) and embryos with the linear type traits, whereas low to moderate genetic correlations (0.07–0.42) were observed between the same traits, especially for ilium width (0.42), rump area (0.38), and hip height (0.33). Thus, selection for in vitro production is achievable in Gyr dairy cattle, and superior genetic progress is associated with the selection of oocytes (total and viable). Furthermore, the moderate genetic association between oocytes and embryos with linear type traits, especially ilium width suggests that progress on in vitro embryo production may be achieved by accessing these measurements. Animal movement and population connectivity are key areas of uncertainty in efforts to understand and predict the spread of infectious disease. The emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in South America poses a significant threat to globally significant populations of colonial breeding marine predators in the South Atlantic. Yet, there is a poor understanding of which species or migratory pathways may facilitate disease spread. Compiling one of the largest available animal tracking datasets in the South Atlantic, we examine connectivity and inter‐population mixing for colonial breeding marine predators tagged at the Falkland Islands. We reveal extensive connectivity for three regionally dominant and gregarious species over the Patagonian Shelf. Black‐browed albatrosses (BBA), South American fur seals (SAFS) and Magellanic penguins (MAG) used coastal waters along the Atlantic coast of South America (Argentina and Uruguay). These behaviours were recorded at or in close proximity to breeding colonies and haul‐out areas with dense aggregations of marine predators. Transit times to and from the Falkland Islands to the continental coast ranged from 0.2–70 days, with 84% of animals making this transit within 4 days ‐ a conservative estimate for HPAI infectious period. Our findings demonstrate BBA, SAFS and MAG connectivity between the Falkland Islands and mainland South America over an expansive spatial network and numerous pathways, which has implications for infectious disease persistence, transmission and spread. • TLR4 on microglia drives alcohol-induced allodynia in females. • Short-term, low-dose ethanol induces microglia morphological changes and pro-inflammatory phenotypes in females. • TLR4+ female microglia show greater activation & proximity to c-Fos activated lumbar dorsal horn neurons in laminae I–III. • Activated microglia are near PKCγ interneurons in the dorsal horn during ethanol-induced mechanical allodynia. The mechanisms of how long-term alcohol use can lead to persistent pain pathology are unclear. Understanding how earlier events of short-term alcohol use can lower the threshold of non-painful stimuli, described as allodynia could prove prudent to understand important initiating mechanisms. Previously, we observed that short-term low-dose alcohol intake induced female-specific allodynia and increased microglial activation in the spinal cord dorsal horn. Other literature describes how chronic ethanol exposure activates Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) to initiate inflammatory responses. TLR4 is expressed on many cell types, and we aimed to investigate whether TLR4 on microglia is sufficient to potentiate allodynia during a short-term/low-dose alcohol paradigm. Our study used a novel genetic model where TLR4 expression is removed from the entire body by introducing a floxed transcriptional blocker (TLR4-null background (TLR4LoxTB)), then restricted to microglia by breeding TLR4LoxTB animals with Cx3CR1:CreERT2 animals. As previously reported, after 14 days of ethanol administration alone, we observed no increased pain behavior. However, we observed significant priming effects 3 hrs post intraplantar injection of a subthreshold dose of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in wild-type and microglia-TLR4 restricted female mice. We also observed a significant female-specific shift to pro-inflammatory phenotype and morphological changes in microglia of the lumbar dorsal horn. Investigations in pain priming-associated neuronal subtypes showed an increase of c-Fos and FosB activity in PKCγ interneurons in the dorsal horn of female mice directly corresponding to increased microglial activity. Bovine tuberculosis is one of the most important common infectious diseases between humans and livestock. Cow's milk can be investigated as one of the transmission reservoirs of the disease. Our study was conducted to investigate the presence of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) DNA in cow's milk from different regions of Lorestan province using Touch-down PCR (TD-PCR) method. So, 100 milk samples from industrial and traditional cattle farms were collected and evaluated according to the animal breed, the average age of the animal and the region where the animal was kept. Seven (26.9%) out of the 26 cow's milk samples contaminated with Mycobacterium spp., were diagnosed as M. bovis positive. The cattle with an average age of more than 5 years were most infected with Mycobacterium. Also, the crossbred cattle with an average age of 3 to 5 years, which were kept and raised in tropical areas, showed the highest rate of M. bovis infection. The last century has witnessed many innovations in agriculture and food technologies that have ensured the production of sufficient quantities of good hygienic food. Animal scientists have contributed substantially to efficient breeding and feeding practices by adapting animals for faster growth and improving feed efficiency and utilization. Breeding goals and feeding recommendations have been proposed with a primary focus on profitability to promote significant changes in the macronutrient content, i.e., animal body protein and fat reduction. However, improving the nutritional quality of meat was not included in the profit assessment. Increasing the lean meat fraction is consistent with the goal of public dietary guidelines for human nutrition proposed in 1980, emphasizing the importance of reducing the consumption of animal fat, particularly saturated fat. The application of breeding and feeding tools to modify and improve the fatty acid composition has been partly implemented in pigs and broiler chickens to supplement the dietary recommendations for humans. The health benefits of lean "red meat" have been questioned in recent years, with dietary guidelines and upper limits being introduced for human intake. Animal breeding indirectly reduces the total and heme iron (the redness generator) content in meat, due to covariation with priority breeding goals. Two micronutrients play important roles in the human diet and are derived largely from meat (selenium) and milk (iodine) if the amount provided and absorbed is sufficient and predictable. The iodine content can be highly dependent on the use of novel (more sustainable) feeds. The micronutrients discussed in this study (Fe, Se, I, and vitamin D) highlight opportunities for the utilization of breeding and feeding knowledge to adjust their levels to procure meat with a high nutrient density. The gaps in micronutrient levels in humans must be addressed by navigating within approved animal feeding levels. Animal scientists must recognize the nutritional impact of breeding and feeding and advertise them. In addition, human nutritionists must acknowledge the existing and potential changes in animal production to meet the dietary guidelines. Haemonchus contortus is one of the most common and fatal pathogenic gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants causing significant economic losses, particularly in low‐income countries. A cross‐sectional study was carried out in randomly selected small ruminants kept under traditional husbandry systems in the Apac district (now split into Apac and Kwania districts) in northern Uganda to assess the prevalence, intensity, and associated risk factors of H. contortus infection from May 2018 to January 2019. Faecal samples were collected from a total of 768 randomly selected small ruminants (384 sheep and 384 goats) and examined for parasites using the floatation method and coproculture. The overall prevalence of H. contortus in small ruminants was 73.3% (563/768) by faecal egg count and 70.6% (542/768) by coproculture. The mean number of eggs per gram of faeces in small ruminants was 2046 ± 107 and differed significantly across the host animals ranging from 1729 ± 120 (mean ± SE) in goats to 2364 ± 176 in sheep. Significant predictors of infection were the origin of study animals, animal species, breed of animal, age of study animal, faecal consistency, lactation, multispecies grazing, grazing method, and anthelmintic use. The findings of our study provide information on the current status of H. contortus infections in goats and sheep under traditional husbandry systems in Uganda which are critical in designing effective control strategies for the disease. Urtica species is an angiosperm plant in the Urticaceae family. It serves as a traditional food and medicinal herb, possessing high nutritional value and various bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, flavonoids, and polyphenolic compounds. In the realm of animal feeds, Urtica spp. can replace traditional protein feed sources and high-quality forage, thereby reducing feed costs. Moreover, Urtica spp. extract exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and boosts immune regulation. Hence, Urtica spp. plays a beneficial role in enhancing animal performance and improving their immune function. Recently, with the development of sustainable farming techniques, the demand for feed additives that prioritize safety, the absence of drug residues, and environmental friendliness have grown. Consequently, Urtica spp. and its extracts have received widespread attention in animal production. This article summarizes the biological functions of Urtica spp. and its application in animal husbandry while also outlining future prospects for its application. Purpose: More accurate prediction of phenotype traits can increase the success of genomic selection in both plant and animal breeding studies and provide more reliable disease risk prediction in humans. Traditional approaches typically use regression models based on linear assumptions between the genetic markers and the traits of interest. Non-linear models have been considered as an alternative tool for modeling genomic interactions (i.e. non-additive effects) and other subtle non-linear patterns between markers and phenotype. Deep learning has become a state-of-the-art non-linear prediction method for sound, image and language data. However, genomic data is better represented in a tabular format. The existing literature on deep learning for tabular data proposes a wide range of novel architectures and reports successful results on various datasets. Tabular deep learning applications in genome-wide prediction (GWP) are still rare. In this work, we perform an overview of the main families of recent deep learning architectures for tabular data and apply them to multi-trait regression and multi-class classification for GWP on real gene datasets. Methods: The study involves an extensive overview of recent deep learning architectures for tabular data learning: NODE, TabNet, TabR, TabTransformer, FT-Transformer, AutoInt, GANDALF, SAINT and LassoNet. These architectures are applied to multi-trait GWP. Comprehensive benchmarks of various tabular deep learning methods are conducted to identify best practices and determine their effectiveness compared to traditional methods. Results: Extensive experimental results on several genomic datasets (three for multi-trait regression and two for multi-class classification) highlight LassoNet as a standout performer, surpassing both other tabular deep learning models and the highly efficient tree based LightGBM method in terms of both best prediction accuracy and computing efficiency. Conclusion: Through series of evaluations on real-world genomic datasets, the study identifies LassoNet as a standout performer, surpassing decision tree methods like LightGBM and other tabular deep learning architectures in terms of both predictive accuracy and computing efficiency. Producing food for animals and providing meat and eggs to humans can be done economically through chicken. The creation of novel SSR markers for chicken will be an invaluable tool for evaluating genetic diversity, mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and understanding population structure, and marker-assisted animal breeding applications. On the other hand, the identification of microsatellites is expensive and labor-intensive. The GMATA software was used in the current in silico approach to generate microsatellites with chromosome-anchored SSR markers from the chicken genome assembly. The genome assembly of chicken resulted in the development of 146 054 SSR markers, and marker loci that corresponded to protein coding sequences were determined. Dinucleotide motifs were prevailing (57.92%) in Ross genome. Functional analysis was used to infer the existence of SSR repeats in biologically important classes of proteins, such as kinases, transcription factors, and G protein receptors. These outcome indicated that variability of SSR repeat copies can endow the cell and whole genome and can be realized in KEGG pathways namely involvement of neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, MAPK signaling pathway, melanogenesis, WNT signaling pathway, and adherens junction. For the first time, the present study developed a whole-genome SSR panel for chicken as part of its research. The considerable quantity of new SSR markers presented in this study serves as a significant asset for molecular genetic studies involving QTL mapping, evaluation of genetic variation, and the use of markers in animal breeding. Cattle are among the animals with diurnal activity, which is due to the specific animal–environment relationship and the natural role wild cattle play in the ecosystem. As humans began domesticating, breeding these animals, they became an integral part of this relationship. This review article addresses the most important current issues: 1) a characterisation of contemporary knowledge on the biological determinants of the vision abilities of dairy cattle, 2) a discussion of the relationship between these abilities and animal health and performance, and 3) a characterisation of the light–animal relationship under husbandry conditions. The intricate link between the anatomical and physiological aspects of visual function in cattle and their circadian rhythms was emphasised. This connection directly influences cattle growth and development, as well as the health and performance of dairy cows during the long/short day photoperiods. In livestock breeding, single nucleotide polymorphism arrays have become a cornerstone of modern livestock breeding. SNP arrays facilitate the identification of genetic markers linked to economically important traits and provide a powerful tool for predicting breeding values. However, conventional breeding programs often overlook additional genomic features contained in the SNP array data that can provide valuable insights into the genetic diversity, copy number variation, inbreeding levels and potential challenges in breeding lines. Here we present genomeprofile, a tool using SNP array‐based genomic data, offering a comprehensive profile of breeding animals including the identification of copy number variants and runs of homozygosity, and screening for aneuploidy. By integrating these features into the breeding landscape, genomeprofile enables a more comprehensive picture of genomic variation, ultimately enhancing precision breeding strategies. To illustrate the practicality and efficacy of genomeprofile, we applied the tool to a dataset of four pig breeding lines. The genomeprofile tool is a user‐friendly tool that processes genotype data in finalreport or plink ped format efficiently into useful output. The output contains copy number variations, runs of homozygosity, selection signatures, aneuploidy and inbreeding per individual and across populations. When it comes to invasive manipulation of animals on the biological level, reactions of disgust are common and often influential on people's moral judgments. As a case in point, the Belgian Blue, a breed of hyper-enhanced cattle which will serve as a case study for the present article, has historically been met with revulsion. Traditionally, in bio- and animal ethics, this 'yuck factor,' has been denied any productive role in proper moral justification, since rationalism is still a dominant paradigm in those disciplines. This is not surprising since rationalism offers the fulfilment of certain expectations we have of morality, like universality, intersubjective communicability, and objectivity. Increasingly, however, the preconceptions of rationalism have been brought into question, both through empirical as well as philosophical insights. In this paper, we will explore a way in which researchers who are, accordingly, critical of rationalism, and who wish to take seriously the role disgust plays in the formation of moral judgments when it comes to biological manipulation of animals, can do so without abandoning those virtues of rationalism which make it such an appealing position. We will do so by offering what we call a 'tempered' kind of rationalism, that is, one which conceives of rationality in the terms of Mary Midgley, not as distinct from, but as a possible function of, well-ordered emotion. In Japan, selective breeding of plants and animals became popular during the Edo period, and the method for producing mice with various patterns, including panda patterns, was described in Chin‐Gan‐Sodate‐Gusa (1787). These fancy mice were likely exported to Europe and crossbred, and about 7% of the genome of the C57BL/6J strain is derived from the Japanese mouse subspecies Mus musculus molossinus. This article explores the impact of ectoparasitic mites on cage-free egg production in the United States and strategies for managing these mites. The transition to cage-free housing has resulted in an increase in mite infestations, which negatively affect the health, behavior, and productivity of hens. The article discusses the genetic variability for mite resistance and the potential use of genomic selection to improve mite resistance in poultry populations. It also provides information on the biology of the northern fowl mite and poultry red mite, as well as various management strategies, including the use of pesticides and biosecurity measures. The authors stress the importance of monitoring and managing mite infestations in egg production and call for further research to develop effective and sustainable strategies for improving hen welfare. An environmental enrichment protocol is essential for testing experimental models because it upholds animal welfare, aligns with ethical principles in animal experimentation, and reduces the number of animals needed. Calomys callosus, a South American rodent from the Cricetidae family, is bred in rodent animal facilities for its ease of handling, longevity, prolificacy, and effectively mimicking diseases like Toxoplasmosis, Leishmaniasis, Chagas, and Schistosomiasis. There are no reports on environmental enrichments for this species or their impact on reproductive parameters. This study aimed to analyze the influence of the Environmental Enrichment Program (EEP) on the reproductive and zootechnical performance of C. callosus kept in the Rodents Animal Facilities Complex of Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU). Two experimental groups were established: with environmental enrichment EE+ and without environmental enrichment EE-. The materials used in the experimental design were changed weekly and alternated between dietary, occupational, physical/cognitive, and non-enrichment items. After the inclusion of the EEP, an improvement in the reproductive indices of C. callosus was identified in the EE+ group. These improvements included increased female precocity, a decreased interbirth interval, and a higher number of pairs producing more offspring. The postpartum zootechnical indices were also better, such as the number of animals born alive, improved weaning rates, and a reduced average number of deaths from birth to weaning. After the inclusion of the EEP, the general health status of C. callosus improved, reducing cases of non-infectious lumbar alopecia. The modern zoo relies on the persistence of genetically and physiologically healthy populations of endangered species, which is enabled through breeding programmes globally and regionally. Many species commonly held in zoos are poorly studied in the wild, leading to a lack of in-depth knowledge surrounding breeding behaviours and subsequent parental behaviours and early life development of young. Knowledge of this information is critical to make informed management decisions which promote successful rearing of young in zoos. While the critically endangered Sumatran tiger is popular in zoos, rates of cub survival in the first 5 months are lower than 50%, highlighting the need for scientific evidence driving management decisions. This study monitors nursing and cub grooming behaviours in a first-time mother Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and her cubs throughout four stages of cub development. The social proximity of cubs and dam were recorded to describe social interactions within the group throughout cub aging. A series of Friedman tests and post-hoc tests found significant decreases in both cub grooming (c2 (3, N = 96) = 14.20, p < 0.01) and nursing (c2 (3, N = 96) = 25.77, p < 0.001) behaviours between the birth and weaning of the cubs, as well as within different phases of cub development between those times. Cub-to-cub proximity was maintained from birth to weaning, with cubs spending significant amounts of time in close proximity (within one adult body length) of each other (c2 (3, N = 96) = 15.231, p = 0.001) throughout the study. The dam was found to spend significantly less time with the cubs as they reached weaning age (c2 (3, N = 96) = 27.88, p < 0.001). These results are thought to be the first of their kind to detail timings of cub development and early life socialisation, providing evidence for timing of first food provision to young and promote the provision of space for the dam to spend time away from the cubs, while allowing the cubs to become confident, mobile, and independent. Simple Summary: Birds and poultry are seasonal breeding animals, and photoperiod is an important environmental factor affecting their broodiness. The Zhedong white goose has a strong broodiness, and extending the photoperiod can improve its egg-laying performance. Photoperiod can advance the sexual maturity of poultry and accelerate the development of reproductive organs and follicles. The growth and development of the ovary and follicles play a major role in the ability of a goose to produce eggs. Therefore, this paper investigates the effects of different photoperiods on the ovaries and small white follicles in the Zhedong white goose. Transcriptome sequencing identified differentially expressed genes and key gene modules, and revealed the effect of photoperiod on gene expression of ovaries and small white follicles. Functional enrichment analysis showed that photoperiod could affect smooth muscle cell proliferation in ovaries, as well as extracellular matrix-related function in small white follicles. In conclusion, the results provide a more comprehensive insight into the molecular mechanism through which photoperiod influences reproduction in geese. Photoperiod can regulate the broodiness of geese and thus increase their egg-laying rate. The laying performance of geese is mainly determined by ovary and follicle development. To understand the effect of photoperiod on the ovary and small white follicles, sixteen 220-day-old healthy female Zhedong white geese were randomly divided into two groups for long photoperiods (15L:9D) and short photoperiods (9L:15D). The geese were euthanized after two months of feeding, and their ovaries and follicles were collected for transcriptome sequencing. RNA-seq analysis identified 187 and 448 differentially expressed genes in ovaries and small white follicles of different photoperiod groups, respectively. A long photoperiod promotes high expression of SPP1, C6, MZB1, GP1BA, and FCGBP genes in the ovaries, and increases the expression of SPP1, ANGPTL5, ALPL, ZP1, and CHRNA4 genes in small white follicles. Functional enrichment analysis showed that photoperiod could affect respiratory system development, smooth muscle cell proliferation in ovaries, and extracellular matrix-related function in small white follicles. WGCNA revealed 31 gene modules, of which 2 were significantly associated with ovarian weight and 17 with the number of small white follicles. Simple Summary: Maintenance of genetic diversity is important for commercial livestock breeds as well. The Danubia Alba rabbit is a synthetic breed; its breeding goal is meat production. The primary goal of our study was to provide information about the demographic history of Danubia Alba and support the breeder company during its selection work. Besides homozygosity, the deepness of the pedigree, the generation interval, and gene variability were evaluated. We found that the lines of genetic variability decreased, probably due to the selection work. The homozygosity of the lines was estimated using different methods, like Ballou's, Wright's, and Kalinowski's inbreeding coefficients. Though current inbreeding coefficients were different among lines, the present inbreeding level came mostly from previously fixed alleles for each of them. Effective population sizes were estimated, and none of the lines was found to be critical. The diversity of livestock animal breeds is an integral part of global biodiversity and requires careful management for sustainability and future availability. Avoiding inbreeding is a crucial aspect of mating of breeding animals. Our aims were to describe the quality of the pedigree, generation interval, gene origin, inbreeding, and effective population size of Danubia Alba rabbit lines. Line "D" is the maternal, whereas lines "C" and "X" are used as the paternal lines. The pedigree information was followed back from the actual breeding rabbits up to the founder animals. The rabbits having offspring in 2023 were chosen as reference populations for each line. The complete generation equivalent (GenCom) was 17.68 for line "C", 18.32 for line "D", and 17.49 for line "X", respectively. The maximum number of generations (GenMax) was above 30 for each line. The estimated bottleneck effect is mostly the result of selection and not a real genetic loss. The Wright inbreeding coefficient (F_Wright) was the highest for the "X" line rabbits, whereas it was the lowest for the line "D". Kalinowski's decomposition of inbreeding showed that it originated mostly from the past; the current fixation of alleles was quite similar for the line "C" and "D". The potential of using long in vitro culture (LIVC) of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from early antral follicles (EAFs) as an assisted reproductive technology in cattle has shown promising results. This study explored the feasibility of applying this technology to sheep as seasonal breeding animals. Ovaries from sheep were collected during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons. COCs were isolated from EAFs (350–450 μm) and cultured in TCM199 medium supplemented with 0.15 μg/mL Zn sulfate, 10−4IU/mL FSH, 10 ng/mL estradiol, 50 ng/mL testosterone, 50 ng/mL progesterone, and 5 μM Cilostamide. After five days of LIVC, the COCs were submitted to an in vitro maturation procedure. The results indicate successful in vitro development of COCs, evidenced by a significant increase in oocyte diameter (p < 0.000) and the preservation of gap junction communication between oocyte and cumulus cells. The gradual uncoupling was accompanied by a progressive chromatin transition from the non-surrounded nucleolus (NSN) to the surrounded nucleolus (SN) (p < 0.000), coupled with a gradual decrease in global transcriptional activity and an increase in oocyte meiotic competence (p < 0.000). Maintenance of oocyte-cumulus investment architecture, viability, and metaphase II capability was significantly higher in COCs collected during the breeding season (p < 0.000), suggesting higher quality than those obtained during the non-breeding season. In conclusion, our study confirms LIVC feasibility in sheep, emphasizing increased effectiveness during the breeding season in isolating higher-quality COCs from EAFs. High-density genomic data analyzed by accurate statistical methods are of potential to enlighten past breeding practices such as selection by unraveling fixed regions. In this study, four native Turkish sheep breeds (80 samples) were genotyped via 296.097 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected by double-digest restriction site-associated DNA (ddRADseq) library preparation combined with the Illumina HiSeq X Ten instrument in order to identify genes under selection pressure. A total of 32, 136, 133, and 119 protein-coding genes were detected under selection pressure by runs of homozygosity (ROH), integrated haplotype score (iHS), the ratio of extended haplotype homozygosity (Rsb), and fixation index (FST) approaches, respectively. Of these, a total of 129 genes were identified by at least two statistical models which overlapped with a total of 52 quantitative trait loci (QTL)-associated SNPs, known to be related to fiber diameter, milk content, body weight, carcass traits, some blood parameters, and entropion. A total of six genes under selection pressure were validated by three statistical approaches five of which are of potential to be integrated into animal breeding since they were associated with wool fiber diameter (ZNF208B), behaviors related to neurocognitive development (CBX1 and NFE2L1), adaptation to high-altitude (SDK1), and anxiety causing internal stress (GSG1L). The sixth gene (COPZ1) turned out to play an important role in coping with different types of cancer in mammals. In particular, ROH analysis uncovered significant findings that the Güney Karaman (GKR) had experienced different selection practices than the Akkaraman (AKR) breed. Moreover, some genes specifically under selection in the GKR breed turned out to be associated with olfaction (OR6K6, OR6N1, OR6N2, and OR4C16), survival during the gestation period (PRR15L), and heat stress (CDK5RAP9). The results of this study imply that GKR may become genetically different from the AKR breed at the genome level due to most probably experiencing different adaptation processes occurring in raised climatic conditions. These differences should be conserved to face future challenges, while other native Turkish sheep breeds could be monitored via genome-wide high-density SNP data to obtain deeper knowledge about the effects of natural selection. Background: Accurate breed identification is essential for the conservation and sustainable use of indigenous farm animal genetic resources. In this study, we evaluated the phylogenetic relationships and genomic breed compositions of 13 sheep breeds using SNP and InDel data from whole genome sequencing. The breeds included 11 Chinese indigenous and 2 foreign commercial breeds. We compared different strategies for breed identification with respect to different marker types, i.e. SNPs, InDels, and a combination of SNPs and InDels (named SIs), different breed-informative marker detection methods, and different machine learning classification methods. Results: Using WGS-based SNPs and InDels, we revealed the phylogenetic relationships between 11 Chinese indigenous and two foreign sheep breeds and quantified their purities through estimated genomic breed compositions. We found that the optimal strategy for identifying these breeds was the combination of DFI_union for breed-informative marker detection, which integrated the methods of Delta, Pairwise Wright's FST, and Informativeness for Assignment (namely DFI) by merging the breed-informative markers derived from the three methods, and KSR for breed assignment, which integrated the methods of K-Nearest Neighbor, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest (namely KSR) by intersecting their results. Using SI markers improved the identification accuracy compared to using SNPs or InDels alone. We achieved accuracies over 97.5% when using at least the 1000 most breed-informative (MBI) SI markers and even 100% when using 5000 SI markers. Aims: This report documents the exposure of passengers and crew of a commercial international flight to the zoonotic pathogen Brucella canis after an infected dog aborted in the passenger cabin of the aircraft. This case demonstrates the challenges associated with brucellosis screening and the risks that airline personnel, airport employees and travellers face when animals with unrecognized zoonotic infections are transported. Methods/Results: The public health investigation of this case was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, the Illinois Department of Health and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with a local veterinary clinic and several academic and federal diagnostic laboratories. It included an extensive diagnostic evaluation of the dam and aborted foetuses to confirm a diagnosis of canine brucellosis. Passengers, airline personnel and staff from the veterinary clinic where the dogs were treated underwent risk assessments, and clinic staff also received detailed guidance regarding infection prevention practices. Conclusions: Animal shelters and breeding programs are recommended to screen dogs routinely for brucellosis, but it is not unusual for domestic or imported animals to have unknown health histories, including the dog's brucellosis status, at the time of purchase, adoption, or re‐homing. Testing recommendations and requirements vary by state, making it challenging for state public health and animal health agencies to monitor and respond appropriately. This case highlights the importance of Brucella spp. screening in sexually intact dogs prior to breeding, purchase, or domestic or international transportation of the dogs. The transportation of pregnant dogs may present a previously unrecognized public health threat in addition to contributing to unnecessary stress and health risks for pregnant animals. The aim of this research was to create various microsatellite paternity test panels that are efficient, cost-effective, simple, and accessible for paternity assessments in the Eşme sheep breed in Western Anatolia. The study included 2432 animals from 16 farms, consisting of 147 rams and 2285 lambs. Seventeen microsatellite markers were utilized in the study to develop these test panels, prioritizing markers with high polymorphic information content (PIC) and probability of exclusion (PE) values. By combining markers with varying PIC and PE values, 16 distinct paternity test panels were established. The study revealed mean values for various parameters of the microsatellites used, with the lowest and highest PE values observed at specific loci. The combined probability of exclusion for the test panels ranged from 0.9079844 to 0.9999998. Panels containing seven or more microsatellites with an exclusion probability above 0.999 were identified as suitable for paternity tests in the Eşme sheep breed. To ensure the nutritional needs of an expanding global population, it is crucial to optimize the growing capabilities and breeding values of fruit and vegetable crops. While genomic selection, initially implemented in animal breeding, holds tremendous potential, its utilization in fruit and vegetable crops remains underexplored. In this systematic review, we reviewed 63 articles covering genomic selection and its applications across 25 different types of fruit and vegetable crops over the last decade. The traits examined were directly related to the edible parts of the crops and carried significant economic importance. Comparative analysis with WHO/FAO data identified potential economic drivers underlying the study focus of some crops and highlighted crops with potential for further genomic selection research and application. Factors affecting genomic selection accuracy in fruit and vegetable studies are discussed and suggestions made to assist in their implementation into plant breeding schemes. Genetic gain in fruits and vegetables can be improved by utilizing genomic selection to improve selection intensity, accuracy, and integration of genetic variation. However, the reduction of breeding cycle times may not be beneficial in crops with shorter life cycles such as leafy greens as compared to fruit trees. There is an urgent need to integrate genomic selection methods into ongoing breeding programs and assess the actual genomic estimated breeding values of progeny resulting from these breeding programs against the prediction models. In wetland ecosystems, birds play a crucial role in nutrient cycling through various activities such as excrement deposition, sediment disturbance during foraging, and utilization of mud and vegetation for nesting. Particularly noteworthy are species exhibiting colonial breeding or high sociability, as they can significantly influence waterbody communities and act as ecosystem engineers in these habitats. Flamingos (Phoenicopteridae) possess all these characteristics, making them potential ecosystem engineers. In this study, we aim to test the hypothesis that Chilean Flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis) exert such effects on an important non-breeding wetland. Moreover, we seek to elucidate the underlaying reasons for these effects and their relationship with flock size and foraging behavior. To accomplish this, we conducted a year-long study on the flock of Chilean Flamingos at Lagoa do Peixe National Park in southern Brazil. We collected environmental and behavioral data, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen levels, water turbidity, salinity, and temperature, from areas both with and without flamingos. Our findings suggest a significant role of Chilean Flamingos in maintaining the nutrient cycle within wetland ecosystems. This is attributed not only to the high levels of guano deposition but also to the bioturbation caused by their foraging behaviors. Furthermore, we observed a significant correlation between flock size, the mean duration of foraging behaviors, and the magnitude of these effects. This study points to the likely effects of flamingos on wetlands ecosystems, emphasizing the intricate interplay between these birds and their habitats and highlighting the importance of conserving both the species and their ecosystems. With the advent of newer methods and tools for accurate analysis, the outcomes of researches have become increasingly precise. This increase in reliability of research findings and forecasting is well demanded in various fields of science including those under animal breeding as well as its allied aspects such as production. One such recent breakthrough is an artificial neural network (ANN), which is a system of hardware and/or software programmed to function like the operation of neurons in the human brain. ANNs are a variety of deep learning technology, which also falls under the umbrella of artificial intelligence. The determination of milk yield, quality of meat animals, predicting breeding values, inferring demography and recombination, genome-enabled prediction are few of the sectors where ANN has proved to be a valuable asset. The correlation coefficient between the experimental values and those predicted with the help of ANN was found to be close to 1. These studies were a significant indication of the impactful ability of ANN. Elaborate visual signals play a crucial role in communication between many breeding animals, often evolving through female mate choice and male-male competition. Neotropical Yellow Toads (Incilius luetkenii) exhibit a temporary elaborate visual trait during their brief annual mating events, transitioning from a drab, female-like brown coloration to a vibrant lemon-yellow. They engage in scramble competition, where males physically compete with both lone and amplectant males for access to females. Previous studies suggest that male color may serve as a sex identification signal in the toads' large breeding aggregations, and that females do not appear to choose males based on color. In this study we investigated whether variation in male coloration functions as an intrasexual signal during male-male interactions. Using realistic robotic model toads in a two-choice arena, we addressed two questions. First, do male Yellow Toads respond differently to a lone male versus a male in amplexus with a female when both males are the same color? Secondly, do male Yellow Toads respond differently to two amplectant males varying in the brightness of their yellow coloration? Males approached the amplectant pair nearly twice as often as the lone male, although this pattern was not statistically significant. Males did not exhibit a differential reaction to bright amplectant males versus dull amplectant males. Therefore, variation in male yellow color and the presence of a female do not appear to influence male-male competitive behavior. Sheep caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) causes significant economic losses in the livestock sector by causing a loss in the quantity and quality of animal products and a loss in the breeding value of animals. Although the primary agent in CLA's etiology is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, some other opportunistic microorganisms also play a role. Therefore, the control and treatment of CLA necessitates the identification of the relevant etiological agents. This study aimed to conduct an in vitro culture and molecular characterization (PCR analysis and 16S rRNA sequencing) of the bacteria involved in sheep CLA cases reported in the Çankırı province of Türkiye and determine the antibiotic susceptibility of the case isolates. In total, 82 (16.4%) of 500 sheep in five farms were diagnosed with CLA. Following the culture of the superficial abscesses samples, C. pseudotuberculosis was identified in 30 (36.59%) as a result of PCR, Pseudomonas spp. in 8 (9.76%), and Enterobacter cancerogenus in 1 (1.22%), as a result of 16S rRNA sequencing. These data revealed extensive heterogeneity among the Pseudomonas isolates, with hints of derivation from a common ancestry for some and phylogenetic similarity to isolates from Germany, Malaysia, and India. In contrast to the high susceptibility to cefoperazone and lincomycin, the high resistances of C. pseudotuberculosis and Pseudomonas spp. isolates to cephalothin, ceftiofur, cloxacillin, amoxicillin, and bacitracin were remarkable. Based on these findings, it was concluded that for an effective treatment and control of ovine CLA cases, there is a need to consider the possible involvement of opportunistic bacteria other than the primary causative agent, C. pseudotuberculosis. (1) Background: Target capture sequencing (TCS) is potentially a cost-effective way to detect single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and an alternative to SNP array-based genotyping. (2) Methods: We evaluated the effectiveness and reliability of TCS in cattle breeding scenarios using 48 female and 8 male samples. DNA was extracted from blood samples, targeted for 71,746 SNPs with TWIST probes, and sequenced on an MGI platform. GATK and BCFtools were evaluated for the best genotyping calling tool. The genotypes were compared to existing genotypes from the Versa50K SNP array of the same animals by measuring accuracy as concordance (%) and R2. (3) Results: In this study, 71,553 SNPs and 166 indels were identified. The genotype comparison of 37,130 common SNPs between TCS and SNP arrays yielded high agreement, with a mean concordance of 98%, R2 of 0.98 and Cohen's kappa of 0.97. The concordances of sex prediction, parent verification and validation of five genotype markers of interest important for Wagyu breeding were 100% between TCS and SNP array. The elements of the genomic relationship matrix (GRM) constructed from the SNP array and TCS data demonstrated a correlation coefficient approaching unity (r = 0.9998). (4) Conclusions: Compared to the SNP array, TCS is a comparable, cost-effective and flexible platform for genotyping SNPs, including non-model organisms and underrepresented commercial animal populations. Genetic similarity determines the extent to which two genotypes share common genetic material. It can be measured in various ways, such as by comparing DNA sequences, proteins, or other genetic markers. The significance of genetic similarity is multifaceted and encompasses various fields, including evolutionary biology, medicine, forensic science, animal and plant breeding, and anthropology. Genetic similarity is an important concept with wide application across different scientific disciplines. The research material included 21 rapeseed genotypes (ten interspecific Brassicaceae hybrids of F2 generation and 11 of their parental forms) and 146 alleles obtained using 21 ISSR molecular markers. In the presented study, six measures for calculating genetic similarity were compared: Euclidean, Jaccard, Kulczyński, Sokal and Michener, Nei, and Rogers. Genetic similarity values were estimated between all pairs of examined genotypes using the six measures proposed above. For each genetic similarity measure, the average, minimum, maximum values, and coefficient of variation were calculated. Correlation coefficients between the genetic similarity values obtained from each measure were determined. The obtained genetic similarity coefficients were used for the hierarchical clustering of objects using the unweighted pair group method with an arithmetic mean. A multiple regression model was written for each method, where the independent variables were the remaining methods. For each model, the coefficient of multiple determination was calculated. Genetic similarity values ranged from 0.486 to 0.993 (for the Euclidean method), from 0.157 to 0.986 (for the Jaccard method), from 0.275 to 0.993 (for the Kulczyński method), from 0.272 to 0.993 (for the Nei method), from 0.801 to 1.000 (for the Rogers method) and from 0.486 to 0.993 (for the Sokal and Michener method). The results indicate that the research material was divided into two identical groups using any of the proposed methods despite differences in the values of genetic similarity coefficients. Simple Summary: European citizens' perception of dogs and cats has shifted, calling for a more robust and appropriate approach to protect the welfare of these pets. While recent updates to EU legislation have aimed to improve some aspects of companion animal welfare, these measures remain insufficient and lack harmonization across Member States. The existing legal framework still falls short of establishing a comprehensive, high standard of care and protection for these animals. Key issues include unhealthy and unethical breeding practices, irresponsible sale and ownership, the complexities of transporting animals for both commercial and non-commercial purposes, and inadequate regulations on training methods and working dog conditions. Additionally, there are concerns about the regulation of dog and cat shows, competitions, therapeutic neglect, end-of-life care, shelter management, and the rights of free-ranging cat and dog populations. To address these issues more effectively, there is a need for more consistent legislation across Europe, coupled with increased education and awareness of responsible pet ownership. The One Welfare approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human and animal welfare, could also play a crucial role in bridging these legislative gaps, ensuring that the human–animal bond is better integrated into modern society's welfare considerations. However, despite these efforts, many challenges remain unresolved, highlighting the need for further legislative action and societal engagement to fully protect companion animal welfare. Companion animals, especially dogs and cats, have increasingly been recognized as moral subjects and valued as family members by European citizens. This new role encourages policy makers to face the many companion animals' welfare issues not yet covered by the EU legislation. The main gaps in the protection of dog and cat welfare during their all lifespan have been identified: unhealthy and unethical breeding practices, irresponsible sale and ownership, transport for commercial and non-commercial purposes, training methods, working dog conditions and rights, regulation of dog and cat shows and competitions, the therapeutic neglect, dog and cat end-of-life care, shelter management legislation and the free-ranging cat and dog population rights. The EU legislation framework is still very weak and far from establishing a harmonized approach, promoting a high standard of care and protection across Member States. We conclude that education and awareness regarding responsible pet ownership and the need for a One Welfare approach have a high value in finding adequate solutions, especially when poor human social welfare affects companion animal welfare. Given the link between human and companion animal welfare, the use of stakeholders' involvement strategies and a transdisciplinary approach appear crucial for the development of an EU legal framework for the well-being of dogs and cats. The reproductive performance of sows can play a critical role in animal breeding, particularly in the efficiency and effectiveness of selection. The high precision is often required to capture more nuanced data, such as the intervals between births. The advanced technologies can be expected to enhance both the accuracy and efficiency of animal breeding programs. In this study, a lightweight network was developed to rapidly and accurately monitor the sow birthing in real time. Specifically, essential birthing metrics were engineered to analyze, such as the number of piglets born and the precise intervals between each birth. The lightweight network was tailored for the real-time monitoring of sow birthing activities. The critical birthing parameters were obtained to significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of breeding programs. Initially, the efficacy of different monitoring views—specifically, single versus double-column views—were evaluated on the accuracy of the improved model. A single-column view was significantly improved to accurately monitor the birthing events. The real-time decisionmaking and direct implications were obtained from the breeding outcomes. Advanced video processing techniques were incorporated, such as horizontal and vertical flipping. Some challenges were remained on the dynamic changes in the sow posture and varying camera perspectives during monitoring. Moreover, different lighting conditions were adapted to capture the inherent motion blur of active piglets during birth. Color jittering and Gaussian blur were then employed to significantly enhance the robustness of the model. The reliable performance was obtained under diverse operational conditions. Further advancements were achieved through a comparative analysis of classification networks. The results revealed that ResNet50 was greatly contributed to the recognition accuracy. MobileNetV3-S was performed the best with the compact model size and superior processing speed of 505.14 frames per second, indicating the optimal operational efficiency. Furthermore, MobileNetV3-S was refined to apply with the masked generative distillation—a sophisticated technique that was effectively enhanced the network's ability to capture and interpret essential birthing features. ResNet50 was utilized as the teacher model in the practical application, while MobileNetV3-S as the student model. The training was conducted using masked generative distillation followed by dependency graph pruning. The tests were carried out on a DELL OptiPlex microcomputer. An impressive detection speed of 83.10 frames per second was achieved with a test accuracy in a single-column field of view of 91.48%. Although there was a slight decrease in the accuracy of 0.98 percentage points, the detection speed was improved by 67.13 frames per second. This improved model was then deployed at the edge for testing. The better performance was achieved in the managed farrowing intervals with a detection error of just 0.31 seconds and the duration of piglet birth events with a mere 0.02-second error. Highly efficient and exceptionally precise real-time monitoring was obtained to promote the management practices of breeding activities in complex farm environments. In conclusion, the advanced computational techniques were integrated for the transformative potential to the monitoring of sow birthing. Real-time data was acquired to combine the image processing and machine learning. Some standards can be offered for the accuracy and efficiency in livestock management. Provenance is becoming increasingly important in meat supply chains as it lends products higher perceived quality. However, its precise definition and interpretation along with its associated characteristics factors have remained somewhat elusive. This review meticulously defines meat provenance while dissecting the essential factors and associated quality attributes that constitute its essence and are subsequently employed to establish pertinent markers for provenance. Meat provenance emerges as a multi‐dimensional construct stemming from the adept management of a constellation of factors relating to geographical origin, farm production system, traceability, and authenticity. Through intricate interactions, these factors unveil innate originality that not only forges a distinct reputation but also imparts a unique typicity to the meat product. Gaining insights into a meat product's provenance becomes attainable by scrutinizing its pertinent composition and organoleptic quality traits. Trace elements and stable isotopes stand out as provenance markers, forging a direct connection to both geographical origin and dietary sources. While somewhat less direct in linkage, other markers such as plant biomarkers, fatty acid composition, pH levels, flavour and aromatic compounds along with organoleptic characteristics contribute to the overall understanding of provenance. Additionally, the identification of animal species and breeds serves as key markers, particularly in the context of protected geographical indications. The study findings are useful for the various stakeholders of how the information for meat provenance can be linked with intrinsic and extrinsic factors for meat quality and protecting the integrity of the supply chain with special reference to traceability and authenticity. © 2024 The Authors. The poultry industry plays a vital role in providing food worldwide and contributes significantly to the economy. It is projected that poultry meat will be the most popular meat choice in the next 10 to 20 years. In the past few years, the implementation of genomic methods in chicken breeding programs has emerged as a successful strategy for driving progress in the poultry breeding sector. In recent decades, the use of animal breeding and selection methods has experienced a substantial increase. The examination and utilization of animal breeding and selection has considerably expanded, leading to a heightened comprehension of the economically valuable quantitative characteristics in chickens. Economic traits in chickens, such as growth rate and feed conversion, are not determined by a single gene but rather are influenced by multiple physiological factors. Thus, it presents a challenge to determine potential genes that are linked to particular characteristics. A variety of chicken phenotypic traits have been investigated through the analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTLs). To address this issue, a meta-analysis of QTL can be used to analyze a large number of independent experiments and identify the number and location of QTLs. The effectiveness of marker-assisted breeding efforts can be greatly improved by incorporating high-certainty candidate genes (CGs) and prioritizing markers as MQTLs. The rise in antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) has recently become a pressing issue, with livestock manure identified as a significant source of these genes. Yet, the distribution of fertilizers derived from livestock manure sold online, potentially containing high levels of ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), is often not considered. Our study involved a random survey of commercial organic fertilizers available on online marketplaces, focusing on 13 common ARGs and 2 integrons (intI1, intI2). We found significant ARGs linked to sulfonamides, macrolides, and tetracycline in the 20 fertilizer samples we tested. The gene copy numbers for ermC, sul2, and tetL were exceptionally high, reaching up to 1011 copies per gram of fertilizer in specific samples. Additionally, 18 out of 20 samples contained the critical β-lactam resistance genes blaTEM and blaKPC, with gene copy numbers up to 1010 copies/g. Integrons, intI1, and intI2 were present in all samples, with abundances ranging from 103 to 1010 copies/g. We categorized the 20 samples into three types for further analysis: poultry manure, livestock manure, and earthworm manure. Our findings indicated a high presence of ARGs in poultry manure compared to a lower occurrence in earthworm manure. The study also showed a strong correlation between integrons and specific ARGs. This research underscores the potential risk of commercial organic fertilizers as a pathway for spreading ARGs from the animal breeding environment to human settings through express transportation. In managed care settings, primates are susceptible to a variety of health complications. A comprehensive understanding of the causes of mortality and their association with management practices is essential for enhancing the welfare of managed care populations such as François' langurs (Trachypithecus francoisi). However, literature addressing prevalent diseases or causes of death in such settings remains limited among François' langurs in managed care. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted an analysis of mortality causes in François' langurs (n = 97) who died of natural causes during a 16-year period (2007-2022) at the Trachypithecus francoisi Rare Animal Breeding Center in Wuzhou, Guangxi, China. Morphological diagnosis and organ system and etiological evaluations were performed. François' langurs were divided into six age-range groups, following previous studies: infant (= 1 year old), juvenile (1 to 2 years), sub-adult (2 to 4 years), adult (4 to 10 years), middle-aged (10 to 15 years), and geriatric (> 15 years). Results revealed that the primary causes of mortality in managed care François' langurs were pneumonia (n = 11, 12.22%), neoplasia (n = 7, 7.78%), ileus (n = 7, 7.78%), senility (n = 6, 6.67%), gastroenteritis (n = 6, 6.67%), cardiac disease (n = 5, 5.56%), hemorrhage (n = 5, 5.56%), intestinal adhesion (n = 4, 4.44%), and renal abscess (n = 4, 4.44%). The gastrointestinal system was most frequently implicated in deaths, followed by the respiratory system (n = 17, 18.89%), multisystem disease (n = 16, 17.78%), and cardiovascular system (n = 15, 16.67%). Regarding etiology, infectious or inflammatory (n = 32, 35.56%) and physiological factors (n = 17, 18.89%) were identified as the leading contributors to the high mortality rate. It is imperative for managers to recognize the distinct risk profiles associated with different age groups. Specifically, pneumonia was the principal cause of death in infant and juvenile langurs, while renal disease, neoplasia, gastroenteritis, and intestinal obstruction were the primary causes of death in adult and middle-aged François' langurs and advanced age and cardiac disease were the main causes of death in geriatric langurs. Photoperiod, the length of daylight, has a significant impact on the physiological characteristics of seasonal breeding animals, including their somatic and gonadal development. In rodents, expression of deiodinase type II (Dio2) and III (Dio3) in the hypothalamus is crucial for responding to photoperiodic signals. However, research on the photoperiodism of hypothalamic gene expression and the corresponding regulatory mechanism in Brandt's voles living in the Mongolian steppes is limited. In this study, we gradually changed day length patterns to simulate spring (increasing long photoperiod, ILP) and autumn (decreasing short photoperiod, DSP). We compared the somatic and gonadal development of voles born under ILP and DSP and the expression patterns of five reproduction‐related genes in the hypothalamus of young voles. The results showed that DSP significantly inhibited somatic and gonadal development in both female and male offspring. Compared with ILP, Dio3 expression was significantly upregulated in the hypothalamus under DSP conditions and remained elevated until postnatal week 8 in both males and females. However, there was no significant difference in the methylation levels of the proximal promoter region of Dio3 between ILP and DSP, suggesting that methylation in the proximal promoter region may not be involved in regulating the expression of Dio3. These findings suggest that hypothalamic expression of Dio3 plays a key role in the photoperiodic regulation of gonadal activity in Brandt's voles. Canine distemper (CD) is a virulent disease caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV) in canines and mustelidaes with high mortality. The incidence of CDV is worldwide distribution and it has caused huge economic losses to multiple industries around the world. There are many studies investigating the prevalence of CD infection, but no comprehensive analysis of CDV infection in minks, foxes and raccoon dogs worldwide has therefore been carried out. The aim of this meta is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the prevalence of CDV infection in minks, foxes and raccoon dogs dogs through a meta-analysis of articles published from around the world. Data from 8,582 small carnivores in 12 countries were used to calculate the combined prevalence of CD. A total of 22.6% (1,937/8,582) of minks, foxes and raccoon dogs tested positive for CD. The prevalence was higher in Asia (13.8, 95% CI: 22.2-45.6), especially in South Korea (65.8, 95% CI: 83.3-95.8). Our study found that the incidence of CD was also associated with geographic climate, population size, health status, and breeding patterns. CD is more commonly transmitted in minks, foxes and raccoon dogs. However, the concentrated breeding as an economic animal has led to an increase in the prevalence rate. The difference analysis study recommended that countries develop appropriate preventive and control measures based on the prevalence in the minks, foxes, and raccoon dogs industries, and that reducing stocking density is important to reduce the incidence of CDV. In addition, CDV is more common in winter, so vaccination in winter should be strengthened and expanded to reduce the incidence of CD in minks, foxes and raccoon dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing challenge in semen preservation of breeding animals, especially in the porcine species. Bacteria are a natural component of semen, and their growth should be inhibited to protect sperm fertilizing capacity and the female's health. In pig breeding, where semen is routinely stored at 17°C in the liquid state, alternatives to conventional antibiotics are urgently needed. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of bacteria is a well-established tool in medicine and the food industry but this technology has not been widely adopted in semen preservation. The specific challenge in this setting is to selectively inactivate bacteria while maintaining sperm integrity and functionality. The aim of this study was to test the principle of PDI in liquid stored boar semen using the photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphine (TMPyP) and a white light LED-setup. In the first step, photophysical experiments comprising singlet oxygen phosphorescence kinetics of TMPyP and determination of the photosensitizer triplet time revealed a sufficiently high production of reactive singlet oxygen in the Androstar Premium semen extender, whereas seminal plasma acted as strong quencher. In vitro experiments with extended boar semen showed that the established PDI protocol preserves sperm motility, membrane integrity, DNA integrity, and mitochondrial activity while efficiently reducing the bacteria below the detection limit. A proof-of-concept insemination study confirmed the in vivo fertility of semen after photodynamic treatment. In conclusion, using the PDI approach, an innovative tool was established that efficiently controls bacteria growth in extended boar and maintains sperm fertility. Phenotypic differences often stem from genetic/maternal differences and/or early-life adaptations to local environmental conditions. In colonial animals, little is known on how variation in the social environment is embedded into individual phenotypes, nor what the consequences are on individual fitness. We conducted an experimental cross-fostering study on king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), exchanging eggs among 134 pairs breeding in high-density (67 pairs) or low-density (67 pairs) areas of the same breeding colony. We investigated differences in parent and chick phenotypes and survival in relation to the density of their origin and foster environment. Adults breeding in colony areas of high density exhibited decreased resting behaviour and increased aggression and vigilance, increased hypometabolism during incubation fasts, and more moderate corticosterone responses shaped by exposure to chronic stressors (e.g. constant aggression by neighbours). Chick phenotypes were more influenced by the environment in which they were raised than their genetic/maternal origin. Chicks raised in high-density colonial environments showed enhanced weight gain and survival rates regardless of the density of their genetic parents' breeding areas. Our study experimentally shows advantages to breeding in colonial areas of higher breeder densities in king penguins, and highlights the importance of social settings in shaping phenotype expression in colonial seabirds. Simple Summary: Pig production has environmental impacts such as global warming and eutrophication. This is closely linked to the feed efficiency of production, i.e., how much feed is required to produce a given quantity of pig meat; this depends on traits such as growth rate, feed intake, and litter size. Commercial pig breeding creates genetic improvement in those traits, and this should reduce the environmental impact. We applied two life cycle assessment (LCA) studies to quantify this reduction. In the first LCA, we compared the environmental impact of pigs in 2021 to the predicted impact for 2030, and we found a 7–9% improvement over those 9 years. In the second LCA, we compared the impact of pigs from a particular breeding company to the North American pig industry average, and we found that those pigs have a 7–8% lower impact. We conclude that commercial pig breeding delivers positive environmental outcomes as a result of its selection for production and reproduction traits. Lifecycle assessment (LCA) quantified changes in environmental impact categories (global warming, eutrophication, etc.) from 2021 to 2030 due to genetic trends in (re)production traits in pig lines of the breeding company Genus-PIC. The 2030 levels were projected with selection index theory based on weightings of traits in the breeding goals and genetic covariances among them. The projected improvement was 0.9% annually for most impact categories. Another LCA compared the impacts of 2021 North American pig production based on PIC genetics versus the industry average. Software openLCA converted material and energy flows to impact categories of frameworks ReCiPe-2016, PEF-3.1, and IPCC-2021. Flows came from data recorded by customers (1.1/4.7 million sows/finishing pigs) and by subscribers to a third-party data aggregator (1.3/9.1 million). PIC genetics have a 7–8% better impact than industry average for 13/18 categories of ReCiPe-2016, 19/25 of PEF-3.1, and all categories of IPCC-2001. Pig breeding delivers positive environmental outcomes as correlated responses to selection for profitability-oriented breeding goals. This trend is additive; technology development will increase it. Different investment levels in breeding population structure and technology and different operational efficiencies of breeding companies cause substantial differences in the environmental impact of pig production. Semiaquatic animals breed in environments with a mix of aquatic and terrestrial features, each requiring appropriate types of locomotion with differential energetic demands and containing different suits of predators. We surveyed calling locations of male Eastern Gray Treefrogs (Hyla versicolor) at our study pond to assess average composition of land/water substrates available to females during mate choice. We also conducted acoustic playback trials to examine whether the mate choice behavior of females was affected by approach substrate; that is, whether females had to swim or walk towards a potential mate. We found that mate preferences were not strongly affected by the substrate of movement: the preferred call duration (“peak preference”) was similar in both treatments, but females showed somewhat stronger discrimination against values deviating from their peak preference (higher “preference selectivity”) in the water treatment. By contrast, other aspects of phonotaxis behavior were clearly different and consistent with females perceiving water as a more dangerous environment: in the water treatment, females took longer to leave the dry release point, jumped further when leaving the release point, and took advantage of features of the playback setup (i.e., the aquatic arena was surrounded by walls) to leave the water and approach the speaker “on land”. This suggests that females do not compromise mate preferences but adjust associated behaviors to minimize risk, and that environmental heterogeneity has little influence on sexual selection regimes.
