Benchmark brown dwarf companions with well-determined ages and model-independent masses are powerful tools to test substellar evolutionary models and probe the formation of giant planets and brown dwarfs. Here, we report the independent discovery of HIP~21152~B, the first imaged brown dwarf companion in the Hyades, and conduct a comprehensive orbital and atmospheric characterization of the system. HIP~21152 was targeted in an ongoing high-contrast imaging campaign of stars exhibiting proper motion changes between Hipparcos and Gaia, and was also recently identified by Bonavita et al. (2022) and Kuzuhara et al. (2022). Our Keck/NIRC2 and SCExAO/CHARIS imaging of HIP~21152 revealed a comoving companion at a separation of $0.37^{\prime\prime}$ (16 au). We perform a joint orbit fit of all available relative astrometry and radial velocities together with the Hipparcos-Gaia proper motions, yielding a dynamical mass of $24^{+6}_{-4}\,\mathrm{M_{Jup}}$, which is $1{-}2{\sigma}$ lower than evolutionary model predictions. Hybrid grids that include the evolution of cloud properties best reproduce the dynamical mass. We also identify a comoving wide-separation ($1837^{\prime\prime}$ or $7.9 \times 10^4 \, \mathrm{au}$) early-L dwarf with an inferred mass near the hydrogen-burning limit. Finally, we analyze the spectra and photometry of HIP~21152~B using the Saumon & Marley (2008) atmospheric models and a suite of retrievals. The best-fit grid-based models have $f_{\mathrm{sed}}=2$, indicating the presence of clouds, $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=1400 \, \mathrm{K}$, and $\log{g}=4.5 \, \mathrm{dex}$. These results are consistent with the object's spectral type of $\mathrm{T0\pm1}$. VHS J1256$-$1257 AB is an ultracool dwarf binary that hosts a wide-separation planetary-mass companion that is a key target of the {\sl JWST} Exoplanet Early Release Science (ERS) program. Using Keck adaptive optics imaging and aperture masking interferometry, we have determined the host binary's orbit, $a=1.96\pm0.03$ au, $P=7.31\pm0.02$ yr, $e=0.883\pm0.003$, and measured its dynamical total mass, $0.141\pm0.008$ $M_{\odot}$. This total mass is consistent with VHS J1256$-$1257 AB being a brown dwarf binary or pair of very low-mass stars. In addition, we measured the orbital motion of VHS J1256$-$1257 b with respect to the barycenter of VHS J1256$-$1257 AB, finding that the wide companion's orbit is also eccentric, $e=0.68^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, with a mutual inclination of $115\pm14^{\circ}$ with respect to the central binary. This orbital architecture is consistent with VHS J1256$-$1257 b attaining a significant mutual inclination through dynamical scattering and thereafter driving Kozai-Lidov cycles to pump the eccentricity of VHS J1256$-$1257 AB. We derive a cooling age of $140\pm20$ Myr for VHS J1256$-$1257 AB from low-mass stellar/substellar evolutionary models. At this age, the luminosity of VHS J1256$-$1257 b is consistent with both deuterium-inert and deuterium-fusing evolutionary tracks. We thus find a bimodal probability distribution for the mass of VHS J1256$-$1257 b, either $12.0\pm0.1$ $M_{\rm Jup}$ or $16\pm1$ $M_{\rm Jup}$, from these models. Using a volume-limited sample of 263 field-age brown dwarfs defined by parallaxes, we provide updated polynomials for CatWISE W1 and W2 absolute magnitudes as a function of spectral type. Our fits are consistent with previous relations and apply to a wider M6–Y1 spectral type range.

Accreting protoplanets enable the direct characterization of planet formation. As part of a high-contrast imaging search for accreting planets with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3, we present H$\alpha$ images of AB Aurigae (AB Aur), a Herbig Ae/Be star harboring a transition disk. The data were collected in two epochs of direct-imaging observations using the F656N narrow-band filter. After subtracting the point spread function of the primary star, we identify a point-like source located at a P.A. of $182.5^{\circ}\pm1.4^{\circ}$ and a separation of $600\pm22$~mas relative to the host star. The position is consistent with the recently identified protoplanet candidate AB Aur b. The source is visible in two individual epochs separated by ${\sim}50$ days and the H$\alpha$ intensities in the two epochs agree. The H$\alpha$ flux density is $F_{\nu}=1.5\pm0.4$~mJy, $3.2\pm0.9$ times of the optical continuum determined by published HST/STIS photometry. In comparison to PDS 70 b and c, the H$\alpha$ excess emission is weak. The central star is accreting and the stellar H$\alpha$ emission has a similar line-to-continuum ratio as seen in AB Aur b. We conclude that both planetary accretion and scattered stellar light are possible sources of the H$\alpha$ emission, and the H$\alpha$ detection alone does not validate AB Aur b as an accreting protoplanet. Accreting protoplanets provide key insights into how planets assemble from their natal protoplanetary disks. Recently, Zhou et al. (2021) used angular differential imaging (ADI) with Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) to recover the young accreting planet PDS 70 b in F656N ($\mathrm{H}\alpha$) at a S/N of 7.9. In this paper, we demonstrate a promising approach to efficiently imaging accreting planets by applying reference star differential imaging (RDI) to the same dataset. We compile a reference library from the database of WFC3 point-spread functions (PSFs) provided by Space Telescope Science Institute and develop a set of morphology-significance criteria for pre-selection of reference frames to improve RDI subtraction. RDI with this PSF library results in a detection of PDS 70 b at a S/N of 5.3. Astrometry and photometry of PDS 70 b are calibrated using a forward-modeling method and injection-recovery tests, resulting in a separation of $186 \pm 13$ mas, a position angle of $142 \pm 5^\circ$, and an H$\alpha$ flux of $(1.7 \pm 0.3)\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. The lower detection significance with RDI can be attributed to the $\sim$100 times lower peak-to-background ratios of the reference PSFs compared to the ADI PSFs. Building a high-quality reference library with WFC3 will provide unique opportunities to study accretion variability on short timescales not limited by roll angle scheduling constraints and efficiently search for actively accreting protoplanets in $\mathrm{H}\alpha$ around targets inaccessible to ground-based adaptive optics systems, such as faint transition disk hosts., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, 20 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

We present the results of our search for variable stars using the long-term Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) monitoring of white dwarf ZTF J0139+5245 with the two 1.0-m telescope nodes located at McDonald Observatory using the Sinistro imaging instrument. In this search, we find 38 variable sources, of which 27 are newly discovered or newly classified (71%) based on comparisons with previously published catalogs, thereby increasing the number of detections in the field-of-view under consideration by a factor of $\approx$ 2.5. We find that the improved photometric precision per-exposure due to longer exposure time for LCO images combined with the greater time-sampling of LCO photometry enables us to increase the total number of detections in this field-of-view. Each LCO image covers a field-of-view of $26' \times 26'$ and observes a region close to the Galactic plane ($b = -9.4^\circ$) abundant in stars with an average stellar density of $\approx 8$ arcmin$^{-2}$. We perform aperture photometry and Fourier analysis on over 2000 stars across 1560 LCO images spanning 537 days to find 28 candidate BY Draconis variables, 3 candidate eclipsing binaries of type EA, and 7 candidate eclipsing binaries of type EW. This paper presents theoretical calculations for the critical rotational velocity at which the stellar matter will start breaking - up for the three layers of the Sun (Core, Radiation Zone, and Photosphere). We also study the effect of the rotational velocity on the hypothetical critical distance of the Sun from a compact star (2 Solar Mass Neutron Star). The calculations involve a force balance equation between the Gravitational Force on one side and Gas Pressure, Centrifugal Force, and Radiation Pressure on the other side. The calculations on Gas Pressure uses the Polytropic model of the Sun which is considered an n = 3 star by the Eddington Standard Model of Stellar Structure. The calculation can be applied to other stars knowing the density profiles and standard numerical data. It is to be noted that our calculations utilise only the standard numerical data without the use of calculus to obtain the approximate values in this paper. The upper limit for rotational velocities for the different layers are found to lie in the range of 200 km/s - 350 km/s. We observe that the radiation pressure plays a negligible role in influencing the critical rotational velocities of matter in all three layers of the Sun. We also find that the critical rotational velocity of the inner layers is smaller in magnitude than for the outer layers. Our calculations also show that the distance from the Sun at which solar matter will start flying - off the surface, in the presence of a compact companion, increases as the rotational velocity of the Sun increases and this critical distance is of the order of the Solar Radii. &nbsp
