This study was carried out to evaluate the influences of maggot formulated feed on growth, digestibility, feed utilization, and body composition of local snakehead Channa gachua. Five practical diets with iso-nitrogenous (40% protein) and caloric level (3.5 kcal g-1) were determined as 10%, 20%, 30% 40%, and 50% substitution of maggot to fish meal protein. Results demonstrated that replacement of 30% protein from maggot in the diet produced in the highest specific growth rate (4.41 %BW day-1). These results were in line with feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein utilization (PER) at increasing dietary maggot level from 10% to 30%. Feed digestibility also attained the maximum level at 30% of maggot substitution. Thirty percent protein substitution from maggot meal exhibited the highest growth performance, nutrient utilization, and digestibility than other treatments. Dietary inclusion levels of maggot meal in diet above 30% remarkably influenced the growth, FCR, PER, and digestibility of C. gachua. Regarding feed price concern, the application of maggot meal may potentially be profitable for snakehead’s fry culture.

Morphological variability-based truss morphometry analysis is often used to identify fish population, morphometric asymmetry, and evolutionary changes of fishes. This study aims to analyze the level of symmetry and asymmetry of Barbodes binotatus from several sampling areas in terms of geographic distribution variability in Indonesia, such as Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sumatera, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. A total of 845 samples were collected from 28 sampling areas. Digital imaging and landmark points were analyzed using the tpsDig.2 program. The parameters including standard landmarks, truss morphometry and geometric-morphometric analysis were completed using SAGE software in order to identify the symmetry-asymmetry level of fishes from each location. Results showed a highly asymmetry level (P0.0001). Further research with a genetic approach is needed to identify genetic populations and prove the existence of genetic factors that affect the level of asymmetry in individual body shape.

Anthropogenic introduction of the Spotted Barb, Barbodes binotatus across the Wallace Line in western Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1713-1722. Barbodes binotatus (Valenciennes, 1842) is a native freshwater fish species in the western part of Indonesia, ranging from Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and Bali Islands to the east in the Wallacea region as far as Lombok and Sumbawa Islands. We reported the first record of its occurrence in other Wallacea regions, especially in the western part of Sulawesi Island. Thirty specimens were captured from the Salu Salibo and Lantora Rivers during the field survey. Morphological examinations and genetic confirmation by DNA barcoding approach provided accurate and reliable identification for B. binotatus. The DNA data suggested that the existence of B. binotatus in the western part of Sulawesi Island, across the Wallace Line, is due to human introduction. The human introduction of non-native species, such as B. binotatus, may cause a severe decline in native ichthyo-biodiversity in Sulawesi Island. We, therefore, suggest that further studies are important to mitigate the negative consequences of this supposedly introduced species on the island.

Production of B. megaterium spores as probiotic candidates is not only influenced by the nutrient composition in the culture media but also initiated by environmental factors. One of the efforts to reduce spore production costs is by utilizing wheat flour as a medium for spore growth. Large quantities of B. megaterium spore production in a short time on wheat flour media can be carried out by implementing environmental shocks. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental shock initiation on the spore production of B. megaterium. The culture media consisted of carbon source (wheat flour) and nitrogen (ammonium chloride) at the C/N ratio of 15:3. Environmental shock conducted at 51 °C and pH of 10 in vegetative maintenance. The treatments of shock were started at the 5th, 10th, and 15th hour after inoculation, respectively. The parameters of this study were vegetative cells, spore production, sporulation efficiency and spore fraction. The highest vegetative cell was revealed in the shock initiated at 10th hour (3.5 x 108 cells. ml-1). The high density of vegetative cells did not indicate high spore production. The highest spore production in this study was found in the shock started at 15th hour (1.73 x 108 spores. ml-1) with sporulation efficiency (79%) and spore fraction was 57.28%. The target of high spore production can be achieved in the shock initiation at the 15th hour in wheat flour media.

DNA barcoding of the most common marine ornamental fish species spilled over from a small-sized marine protected area, Bali Barat National Park, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 243: 47-54. Healthy coral reefs within a protected area may function as a source of recruitment to the surroundings through spill-over and export larvae. This study aims to generate a list of common species of marine ornamental fishes for the aquarium trade in Indonesia, mainly collected adjacent to Bali Barat National Park (BBNP). Lived-fish samples were collected from six fish collectors in two villages surrounding BBNP, Sumber Kima, Bali, and Bangsring, Banyuwangi. All species were checked by three active fishermen in both villages for confirmation of the most common species and not belonging to the target. A total of 82 separate groups out of 145 specimens were identified based on their morphological characters. All samples were then sequenced based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene amplification. The sequence read lengths for all the specimens were between 655 and 658 bp. All the findings from this DNA barcoding approach were in line with morphological species identification. Wrasses (Family: Labridae) were the most dominant (41 species) representing the group, followed by Pomacentridae (24 species), Acanthuridae (14 species), Pomacanthidae (14 species) and Gobiidae (10 species). Among the species, only green sergeant, Amblyglyphidodon batunaorum, belonged to the Vulnerable (VU) category based on IUCN criteria. The rest were either Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD), or Not Evaluated (NE). It implied that no catch species were under fishing pressure except for the green sergeant. Considering a total of 28 target species by local fishermen (recorded in an earlier article), small-scale fishermen can easily catch more than 100 species in one trip. The results significantly contributed to the need to generate a list of common ornamental fish species specifically exported from Indonesia as an aquarium trade commodity.

Osteochilus spilurus merupakan ikan asli Indonesia yang banyak ditemukan pada perairan cenderung asam. Titik temuan terbanyak spesies ini terdapat di Pulau Kalimantan, namun belum diidentifikasikan di Sungai Katingan. Pelaksanaan sampling dilakukan di salah satu anak Sungai Katingan di Desa Tumbang Linting, Kecamatan Katingan Hilir, Kabupaten Katingan. Pengamatan dilakukan pada karakter morfologi meliputi meristik secara manual, morfometrik dengan aplikasi TpsDig dan analisa bentuk tubuh pada 14 landmark dengan program SAGE. O. spilurus teridentifikasi di perairan anak Sungai Katingan dengan nama lokal Banta Malisan dan memiliki ciri morfologi bentuk moncong mengerucut dan bundaran hitam di bagian pangkal ekor. Formula siripnya adalah D.iii.12, V.9, A.6, dan P.8. Linealateralis dengan 29 sisik dan 8 sisik pertama berada sebelum sirip dorsal. Ikan memiliki panjang total antara 72.81 – 55.11 mm, panjang standar 57.1 – 43.27 mm, dan tinggi badan 15.52 – 11.91 mm. Temuan O. spilurus ini menjadi catatan pertama di Sungai Katingan dan telah disimpan spesimen biologinya di Museum Zoologi Bogor dengan nomor regristrasi MZB 26069. Informasi morfologi dan bentuk tubuhnya diharapkan menjadi dasar dan pembanding penelitian spesies ini dimasa mendatang.

Genetic diversity analysis and phylogeography of Osteochilus spilurus (Cyprinidae: Labeoninae) from Bangka, Belitung, and Kalimantan Islands using Cytochrome b gene. Biodiversitas 23: 4738-4746. The Sundaland fish species, Osteochilus spilurus is only utilized commercially in the Belitung Islands and has yet to be domesticated. This species can characterize freshwater fish phylogeography because have a minimum of human influence. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and phylogeography of O. spilurus from the Bangka, Belitung, and Kalimantan Islands using Cytochrome b gene. Twenty fish samples were collected from the Sebangau and Kapuas Rivers in Kalimantan, the Lenggang River in Belitung Island, and the Lebak River in Bangka Island. Forward LA-cyp and reverse HA-cyp primers were used for amplification Cytochrome b gene. Mega 10.0 applications were used to construct of the phylogenetic tree. The phylogeographic analysis uses a comparative phylogenetic tree approach with geographical history. The cytochrome b gene showed variations in the nucleotides of O. spilurus from the three islands. Phylogeography of O. spilurus showed that there are two different clades with intraspecific variation according to a geographic area with bootstrap values of 99-100%. One clade contains fish samples from Bangka and Belitung islands, while the other clade comes from Kalimantan island. The formation of the Karimata Strait (between Bangka-Belitung and Kalimantan Islands) and the pattern of paleo rivers are predicted to influence the disparity.

The limitations of fish in digesting food depend on the presence of enzymes protease, amylase, and lipase that react with substrates in the digestive channel of fish. Supplementation methods can be performed to increase fish growth by adding prebiotics and probiotics to the feed. This study aims to determine the influence of the difference in the length of time fermented prebiotic feed (sweet potato extract) and probiotics (Bacillus megaterium) on the quality of feed. The results of the physical analysis of fish feed showed the color looks brown, fishy smell, texture, and general conditions of feed seemed completely normal. Chemical analysis showed that the proteins were best improved in B3 treatment, with the period of fermentation approximately 72 hours. Biological analysis suggests that the longer the fermentation time taken, the higher the abundance of bacteria obtained. Chlorella sp. is well-known as a functional feed in fish culture and has been utilized in the food industry. In phototrophic cultivation, photoperiod plays a fundamental part in the growth and pigment content of microalgae. This work was purposed to evaluate the effect of light:dark cycle on the growth rate, production of biomass and pigment and nutrient utilization of Chlorella sp. Four photoperiods (8:16, 12:12, 18:6, and 24:0 h light:dark regimes) under a constant light intensity of 4500 lux were applied in this study. The results demonstrated that increasing light duration led to increased cell growth, biomass, and pigment production of Chlorella sp. The best cell concentration, specific growth rate, and biomass production were 28.5 x 106 cells mL-1, 1.47 day-1, and 0.815 g L-1 dry weight, respectively, under continuous illumination. The maximum chlorophyll a of 19.205 mg L-1 and carotenoid of 4.656 mg L-1 were obtained at 24:0 h photoperiod. The highest uptake of nitrate (66.331%) and phosphate (76.191%) by Chlorella sp. were achieved under 24 h light regime. Improving the uptake of nutrients resulted in enhanced growth and pigment content of Chlorella sp. We conclude that continuous illumination is the best photoperiod to produce biomass and pigment and improve the nutrient removal of Chlorella sp.

Bacillus is a species widely used as a probiotic in the aquaculture industry. The Bacillus spores have more advantages than their vegetative ones, and an addition of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and manganese can improve the spore production. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different sources of manganese on the production and sporulation efficacy of B. subtilis SB3. The sources of manganese used in this study were manganese chloride (MnCl2) and manganese sulfate (MnSO4) at the concentration of 10 mM. Media without manganese supplementation was used as a control. The results showed that there was a significant effect of different manganese sources on the spore production of B. subtilis SB3. The highest spore production was found in media with MnCl2 supplementation with the total spore of 8.77 x 107 spores. mL-1. However, spore production with MnSO4 supplementation was still higher (22.7%) compared to that without manganese supplementation. The decrease in spore production with MnSO4 supplementation was possible due to the sulfate inhibition. The high spore production in media with MnCl2 supplementation was also preceded by the high production of vegetative cells from B. subtilis SB3 (2.54 x 108 cells. mL-1). The results indicated that manganese could stimulate both vegetative cell growth and its spores. The highest sporulation efficacy (35%) was also achieved in media with MnCl2 supplementation. On the other hand, the germination rate of B. subtilis SB3 spores was not influenced by manganese supplementation.Abstrak Bacillus adalah species yang banyak digunakan sebagai probiotik pada industri akuakultur. Dalam bentuk spora, species ini lebih banyak mempunyai kelebihan dibandingkan dalam bentuk vegetatifnya dan peningkatan produksi sporanya dapat dilakukan dengan penambahan mineral seperti kalsium, magnesium dan mangan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh sumber mangan yang berbeda terhadap produksi dan efisiensi sporulasi B. subtilis SB3 indigenous akuatik. Sumber mangan yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah mangan klorida (MnCl2) dan mangan sulfat (MnSO4) sebanyak 10 mM dan sebagai kontrol digunakan media tanpa suplementasi mangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang nyata penggunaan sumber mangan yang berbeda terhadap produksi spora. Produksi spora tertinggi didapatkan pada media dengan suplementasi MnCl2 sebanyak 8,77 x 107 spora. mL-1. Sedangkan produksi spora dengan suplementasi MnSO4 juga masih lebih tinggi (22,7%) dibandingkan tanpa suplementasi magan. Penurunan produksi spora pada media dengan penambahan mangan sulfat diduga karena adanya penghambatan oleh sulfat. Tingginya produksi spora pada media dengan suplementasi MnCl2 sebelumnya juga didahului dengan tingginya produksi sel vegetatif dari B. subtilis SB3 (2,54 x 108sel. mL-1). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa mangan dapat menstimulasi baik pertumbuhan sel vegetatif dan sporanya. Efisiensi sporulasi tertinggi juga dicapai pada media dengan suplementasi MnCl2 sebesar 35%. Di sisi lain, kemampuan germinasi spora B. subtilis SB3 tercatat sama dan tidak dipengaruhi oleh suplementasi mangan.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the financial feasibility of tilapia fish farming business using the independent feed in the Tunas Mekar Jaya Group. Research location in Pamijahan Regency, Bogor Regency. Since receiving assistance, this group has produced tilapia consumption for five cycles, but the group has not recorded in detail the feasibility of the business being carried out. The method used in this research is descriptive method and method of determining respondents is the census. Data analysis methods are investment capital analysis, total production costs, total income, revenue cost ratio, profit analysis, economic profitability, net present value, internal rate of return, and payback period. From the results of data analysis, tilapia fish farming business using independent feed has an investment capital of Rp 3,596,405,000 with a total operating income of Rp 940,000,000/year, RCR 1.6 with a profit of Rp 368,587,000/year, economic profitability of 64%. NPV of Rp 33,310,800, IRR 33.31% and the rate of return on business capital in the fairly fast category, as shown by the payback period analysis for 0.12 years. The results of the financial feasibility analysis show that the tilapia fish farming program in the Independent Fish Feed Movement in the Tunas Mekar Jaya group is said to be feasible to be developed.

Application of wheat flour (Triticum aestivum) on spore density and sporulation efficiency of Bacillus megaterium isolated from Litopenaeus vannamei gastrointestinal tract. Biodiversitas 22: 3709-3715. Bacillus megaterium is frequently used in fish farming, such as white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) pond, which can produce spores with high stability in its implementation. Currently, spore production still requires the availability of high-cost carbon sources. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different wheat flour doses on spore density and sporulation efficiency of B. megaterium BM1. In flasks, 50 mL of each test medium was treated with different doses of wheat (10, 20, 30 and 40 g. L-1, respectively) and glucose was used as a control. Each treatment was inoculated with B. megaterium BM1 (2.6 x 108 CFU. mL-1) and incubated in a shaker incubator (120 rpm) at 37 °C for 120 hours. The results showed that the highest vegetative cell concentration (17 x 108 CFU. mL-1), growth rate (0.8 hour-1) and spore (14.7 x 108 spores. mL-1) were found in the wheat flour dose of 30 g. L-1. Furthermore, the highest sporulation efficiency was achieved at 20 g. L-1 of wheat (91.30%) and germination should be done at a dose less than 40 g. L-1. The size of the spores was 1.35-1.39 µm. Thus, 30 g. L-1 of wheat flour is a potential dose to produce spore for probiotic candidates.

First genetic record and the phylogenetic relationship of Osteochilus spilurus (Cyprinidae: Labeoninae) originating from Bangka and Belitung Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 794-802. Osteochilus spilurus is a freshwater fish from Southeast Asia. Species identification for this fish in Indonesia is still solely limited to morphological characteristics. Therefore it is highly important to validate using short DNA sequences that have been proven to be fast, effective, and accurate. Fish specimens were collected from Lenggang river in Belitung island, and Lebak river in Bangka island, Indonesia. Mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b, 408 bp) was amplified and sequenced. We collected fish specimens from Lenggang River in Belitung Island and Lebak River in Bangka Island, Indonesia. The results suggested that individuals from both islands are clustered together with a strong bootstrap value (100%) in a monophyletic clade. The specimens deposited at NCBI as the first Indonesian genetic records. They have a sister lineage to individuals from Sabah, Malaysia, although supported by a low bootstrap value. While geographical connection during the Pleistocene period allowed wide distribution of the species, differences in the evolutionary processes of historical biogeography and environmental changes are the predicted cause of the low genetic similarity. These findings can be used as a sequence reference and basic information for conservation of this species.

Ikan pelangi merah (Glossolepsis incisus Weber) merupakan salah satu ikan hias tropis di perairan tawar Indonesia yang bernilai ekonomis tinggi. Akan tetapi laju pertumbuhan yang sangat lambat menyebabkan ikan ini jarang ada di pasar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan vitamin C terhadap laju pertumbuhan spesifk ikan ini. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode eksperimen dengan 5 perlakuan dan 2 ulangan pada ikan ukuran 2 cm dan 6 cm. Dosis vitmin C yang digunakan yaitu 0 mg/kg pakan, 500 mg/kg pakan, 1000 mg/kg pakan, 1500 mg/kg akan dan 2000 mg/kg pakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan vitamin C sangat mempengaruhi SGR dan FCR serta berpengaruh nyata terhadap pH dan DO media namun tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap SR dan Suhu. Hubungan vitamin C dengan SGR dan FCR adalah kuadratik dan diperoleh dosis terbaik dengan penambahan vtamin C sebesar 1666mg/kg pakan pada ukuran 2 cm dan dosis 1111 mg/kg pakan pada ukuran 6 cm. Peningkatan SGR dipengaruhi oleh meningkatnya dosisvitamn C demikian pula nilai FCR, namun akan terjadi penurunan SGR dan FCR jika vitamin C yang dibutuhkan berlebihan atau tidak sesuai.

Short Communication: Proximate analysis, amino acid profile and albumin concentration of various weights of Giant Snakehead (Channa micropeltes) from Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1196-1200. Fish is an important foodstuff due to its nutritional value and high protein. One of popular fish as a foodstuff in tropical Asia is giant snakehead fish (Channa micropeltes). This study aims to examine the proximate composition, amino acid profile, and albumin concentration of giant snakeheads in various weights and to determine the best weight of giant snakeheads according to the proximate, amino acid, and albumin concentration. This research used natural-caught giant snakehead as a material of study, which was categorized into 4 weight sizes consisting of 4-5 grams (B1), 6-14 grams (B2), 15-34 grams (B3), 35-300 grams (B4). Based on the results of the test, the highest water content was found in B1 of 80.5%, the highest levels of protein and fat were in the B4 group of 16.8% and 1.7%, respectively. The highest total amino acid profile was found in B4, with the highest composition of essential amino acids, lysine, which was 2.02%, while the composition of the highest non-essential amino acid in glutamate was 3.60%. The highest albumin levels were in the B4 group which was 16.7%. According to the result of this research, the best weight to consume according to the proximate analysis (Protein, fat content), amino acid profile, and albumin concentration is a giant snakehead at the weightiest of 35-300 grams (B4).

Growth rate of Acropora formosa coral fragments transplanted on different compositions of faba kerbstone artificial reef. Biodiversitas 20: 3593-3598. A counter measure and an alternative technique to reduce coral reef destruction is through transplantation, which requires the relocation or cutting of a live coral, planted in a designated place containing damaged varieties. Faba kerbstone is a product innovation similar to paving block/brick, made from fly and bottom ash (FABA), which is the dominant waste product from PT Jawa Power, Probolinggo, Indonesia. In addition, it has also been widely utilized as a raw material in the creation of paving and concrete blocks, composed by harmless material, with a length, width, and height of 40, 25 and 15 cm, respectively. This study aims to observe the growth rate of Acropora formosa coral fragments transplanted on a faba kerbstone, using five different fly and bottom ash compositions: K1 = 0% Fa, K2 = 25% Fa and 75% Ba, K3 = 50% FA and 50% Ba, K4 = 75% Fa and 25% Ba, while K5 = 100% Fa and 0% Ba. Furthermore, the observations were conducted underwater, using scuba diving for six months, observing the parameters of fragment length, colony diameter, and branches number. In addition, the highest elongation rate of A. formosa coral fragments was identified at K2 (1.313 ± 0.447 cm/month), and K1 (1.185 ± 0.642 cm/month), while the most significant increment in colony diameter was observed in K2 (0.077 ± 0.060 cm/month) and K1 (0.063 ± 0.071 cm/month), and the largest number of branches was also found in K2 (29.50 or 4.28 branches/month) and K1 (25.25 or 3.67 branches/month). Furthermore, the one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (p = 0.05) showed was no significant difference in the fragments elongation and colony diameters in the K1 and K2 models, although there was substantial variation from the K3, K4, and K5.

Temperature and pH are two essentials water quality parameters in shrimp culture. Therefore, monitoring these two variables is very important to improve productivity in aquaculture. In this study, a monitoring system was created to monitor the two variables in the pond. For this reason, Raspberry Pi IoT based hardware and software has been made to carry out the monitoring function. Monitoring data is automatically sent to online servers using a cellular internet network. For electrical power needs, remote devices are equipped with solar power plants. The results showed that the system could read the temperature and pH of the water accurately and sent it to an online server. There is a web-based calibration menu that allows users to easily calibrate sensors. Moreover, a user interface is also made to display the sensor readings data that has been stored in the database. In conclusion, the monitoring system is applicable for water quality data logger in the field operation with user friendly operation.

Immunostimulatory dose given to the fish to be precise, should not be less and should not be excessive. This is because the immunostimulatory properties which can only work at the optimal dose. Therefore, the method for determining the dosage and administration techniques immunostimulatory should be studied in depth. Research on the determination of the dose and the best maceration time on the crude extract phenol Gracilaria sp. using LC50 is intended to determine how best dose and how long it's best used in the immersion process to extract range dose used is 1 g/l; 1,5 g/l; 2 g/l; 3 g/l; 4 g/l and 5 g/l. The results of these observations indicate that doses ≥ 3 g/l has a 10-hour LC50. While the dose ≤ 3 g/l has a 14-hour LC50. However, further research is continued in the time range for prolonged submersion namely 10, 12 and 14 hours. The results showed the soaking time 12 hours showed LC50 15 hours. It concluded that the dose that can be used to test immunostimulant is 1, 1.5 and 3 g/l with a soaking time of less than 12 hours.

Live food played an important role in aquaculture especially hatcheries. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of enriched different probiotic doses on total lenght, nutritional profile and enzymatic activities of Daphnia sp. This research used 3 treatments and 3 replications. The experimental treatments are 0, 5 and 10 ml L−1 and enriched period was 0, 12 and 24 hours. Probiotic consortia bacteria of Bacillus subtilis (107 CFU ml−1) and Lactobacillus casei (107 CFU ml−1) which is fermented by the addition of spices and molasses. Daphnia sp. was cultured in fresh water with a density of 20 ind ml−1. Observed parameters include total lenght, nutritional profile and enzymatic activities. The results showed that probiotic doses effect significantly different (p−1 doses of probiotic and 12 hours incubation period included total lenght of 1.8 mm, and moisture, protein, lipid, ash amounted to 98.43±0.03, 42.72±0.3, 6.34±0.07, 11.72±0.39 %, protease and lipase activity were 21.92±0.90 U ml−1 and 0.82±0.06 U ml−1. Enriched Daphnia sp. has live food potential for hatcheries.
