Abstract This article introduces a novel approach named HBA‐dHoSMO, which combines a continuous decentralized higher‐order sliding mode controller‐based observer (dHoSMO) with the honey badger algorithm (HBA), specifically designed for load frequency control in multi‐area power systems (MAPSs). Traditional sliding mode controllers (SMCs) employed in load frequency control of MAPSs often face challenges related to chattering and oscillations, leading to decreased robustness and stability. Additionally, tuning the parameters for these SMC designs to achieve optimal performance in MAPSs can be challenging. The HBA‐dHoSMO is proposed to address the issues of chattering and oscillations, while the optimal parameters for SMC design are obtained using HBA. The stability analysis of the entire system is conducted using linear matrix inequality and the Lyapunov stability theory, affirming the reliability and feasibility of the approach. A comprehensive set of case studies is performed under various configurations and conditions. Additionally, particle swarm optimization and tuna swarm optimization, in conjunction with SMC‐based and proportional–integral–derivative controllers, are examined for performance comparison. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed controller across all case studies. This is evidenced by the lowest integral time absolute error values recorded as 0.0133, 6.45 × 10−4, and 0.0167 for single‐, two‐, and three‐area power systems, respectively.

ABSTRACTThe use of eggshells as an alternative source of calcium carbonate for groundnut can reduce the impact on the natural reserves of limestone, a non-renewable natural source. This study aimed to investigate the effects of eggshell powder application on the growth and yield of groundnut. The calcium treatments were lime application (A0) at 500 kg ha−1 and four rates of eggshell powder application including A1 (200 kg ha−1), A2 (300 kg ha−1), A3 (400 kg ha−1), and A4 (500 kg ha−1). Two application times, T1 (applying 5-days before sowing) and T2 (applying 5-days after flowering) were employed. The result showed that eggshell powder could be a useful alternative source to supply Ca for groundnut. Application of eggshell powder before sowing resulted in significantly higher pod yield and total calcium uptake with better growth parameters than after flowering. Increasing eggshell powder application rates also increased soil pH and calcium contents, and plant calcium uptake. The application rate of eggshell powder before sowing at the rate of 300 kg ha−1 produced the highest pod yield and was suggested to be optimum.

Biochar is suggested as a conditioner for salt-affected soils for various crops. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar on the growth and physiology of sugarcane under saline and non-saline conditions at an early growth stage. The experiment was conducted in pots in the greenhouses with three replications. Three biochar rates (0, 5, and 10 tons ha−1) were applied before transplanting sugarcane seedlings into the pots. Four weeks after transplanting, plants were irrigated with 300 mL of 100 mM NaCl every two days for 2 weeks. Salinity significantly affected the growth and physiology of sugarcanes. The application of biochar increased plant height, shoot dry weight, root volume, root dry weight, Fv/Fm, and chlorophyll content while decreasing the water saturation deficit and the relative ion leakage in the leaves under both saline and non-saline conditions. Thus, biochar application has positive effects on the growth and physiology of sugarcane at an early growth stage under both saline and non-saline conditions. However, further study is suggested to investigate the effects of biochar on sugarcane under saline stress in the field at different growth stages.

Background and Purpose: Tandem occlusive lesion, a major challenge for thrombectomy in acute anterior circulation strokes, is poorly represented in randomized trials. This study demonstrates the findings of thrombectomy in tandem occlusion and comparative analysis of two treatment groups (extracranial versus intracranial first subgroup). Patients and Methods: We enrolled and divided 17 patients with acute tandem ischemic stroke who received endovascular treatment into two groups. Group 1 with completed (100%) internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion was treated by an extracranial stent, whereas Group 2 with severe (70%–99%) ICA occlusion was prioritized with intracranial thrombectomy. Data of clinical parameters, imaging and angiographic results, periprocedural complications, and results after 3 months were collected and analyzed. Results: The mean age of patients was 70.2 ± 8.8 years, and males accounted for 94.1%. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale and Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) baseline were 16.6 ± 4.2 and 7.6 ± 1.1, respectively, with occlusive side was 52.9% on the right. Group 1 including ten cases (58.8%) was treated extracranial lesion with carotid stent before intracranial thrombectomy, and Group 2 with seven cases (41.2%) was prioritized intracranial thrombectomy. In total 17 procedures, there were ten stent retrievers (58.8%), four aspirations (23.5%), and three Solumbra (17.7%). No re-occlusion of carotid stent postoperation was recorded. The good revascularization (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 2b-3) was archived in 82.4% of patients, while symptomatic hemorrhage was seen in 2 cases (11.8%). Three months after treatment, patients with favorable clinical outcome (Modified Rankin Scale ≤2) accounted for 47.1%. Conclusion: Our study determined a promising outcome with reasonable good recanalization and clinical recovery for endovascular intervention in tandem ischemic. In the subgroup of treatment, “extracranial stent first” had more complex disease with completed ICA occlusion which required longer procedure time may lead to worse outcome.

Nowadays, the power systems are getting more and more complicated because of the delays introduced by the communication networks. The existence of the delays usually leads to the degradation and/or instability of power system performance. On account of this point, the traditional load frequency control (LFC) approach for power system sketches a destabilizing impact and an unacceptable system performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a new LFC based on adaptive integral second-order sliding mode control (AISOSMC) approach for the large-scale power system with communication delays (LSPSwCD). First, a new linear matrix inequality is derived to ensure the stability of whole power systems using Lyapunov stability theory. Second, an AISOSMC law is designed to ensure the finite time reachability of the system states. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the AISOSMC is designed for LFC of the LSPSwCD. In addition, the report of testing results presents that the suggested LFC based on AISOSMC can not only decrease effectively the frequency variation but also make successfully less in mount of power oscillation/fluctuation in tie-line exchange.

To provide a more practical method of controlling the frequency and tie-line power flow of a multi-area interconnected power system (MAIPS), a state observer based on sliding mode control (SOboSMC) acting under a second-order time derivative is proposed. The proposed design is used to study load frequency control against load disturbance, matched and mismatched uncertainty and parameter measurement difficulties of power systems that exist in the modern power plant, such as multi-area systems integrated with wind plants. Firstly, the state observer is designed to optimally estimate system state variables. The estimated states are applied to construct the model of the MAIPS. Secondly, a SOboSMC is designed with an integral switching surface acting on the second-order time derivative to forcefully drive the dynamic errors to zero and eliminate chattering, which can occur in the first-order approach to sliding mode control. In addition, the stability of the total power system is demonstrated with the Lyapunov stability theory based on a new linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique. To extend the validation of the proposed design control for practical purposes, it was tested in a New England system with 39 bus power against random load disturbances. The simulation results confirm the superiority of the proposed SOboSMC over other recent controllers with respect to overshoot and settling time.

In multi-area interconnected power systems (MAIPS), the measurement of all system states is difficult due to the lack of a sensor or the fact that it is expensive to measure. In order to solve this limitation, a new load frequency controller based on the second-order sliding mode is designed for MAIPS where the estimated state variable is used fully in the sliding surface and controller. Firstly, a model of MAIPS integrated with disturbance is introduced. Secondly, an observer has been designed and used to estimate the unmeasured variables with disturbance. Thirdly, a new second-order sliding mode control (SOSMC) law is used to reduce the chattering in the system dynamics where slide surface and sliding mode controller are designed based on system states observer. The stability of the whole system is guaranteed via the Lyapunov theory. Even though state variables are not measured, the experimental simulation results show that the frequency remains in the nominal range under load disturbances, matched and mismatched uncertainties of the MAIPS. A comparison to other controllers illustrates the superiority of the highlighted controller designed in this paper.

The chemical synthesis of a series of mucin-type oligosaccharide fragments 1–7 containing an α-linked aminopropyl spacer ready for glycoarray attachment is reported. A highly convergent and stereoselective strategy that employs two different orthogonal protected galactosamine building blocks was used to access all of the targets. A tandem deprotection sequence, that did not require chromatography-based purification between steps, was employed to globally unmask all protecting groups and all final targets were isolated in good to excellent yields.

We investigated the effects of feeding sodium sulfite (SoS) treated uncontaminated and Fusarium contaminated maize in a porcine lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge model. Eighty piglets (7.59 ± 0.92 kg body weight [BW]) were equally assigned to one of four experimental diets containing 10% maize, either uncontaminated and untreated (CON−, 0.09 mg deoxynivalenol [DON]/kg diet) or uncontaminated and SoS-treated (CON+, wet-preserved with 5 g SoS/kg maize; 0.05 mg DON/kg diet), or prepared with 10% of a Fusarium contaminated maize containing mainly deoxynivalenol (DON), either contaminated and untreated (FUS−, 5.36 mg DON/kg diet), or contaminated and SoS-treated (FUS+, wet-preserved with 5 g SoS/kg maize; 0.83 mg DON/kg diet). At day 42 of experiment, ten pigs of each group were injected intraperitoneally with either 7.5 µg LPS/kg BW or placebo (0.9% NaCl). At 120 min after injection, blood samples were collected to analyse TNF-α, hematological profile, clinical biochemistry as well as the redox status. A significant increase in body temperature and cytokine TNF-α concentration was observed in the LPS-injected piglets. Results for hematology, clinical chemistry and redox status indicate no effects of SoS treatment, with exception of neutrophil counts being significantly more pronounced after feeding the SoS treated FUS maize. In conclusion, SoS treatment of maize did not modulate the LPS-induced acute inflammation.

Background: In 2021, Vietnam experienced an outbreak of Lumpy skin disease (LSD), which infected 207,687 cattle and buffaloes, as officially reported, and resulted in the culling of 29,182 animals. Aim: In this study, samples from cattle that died and showed typical signs of LSD in the Ha Tinh province of Vietnam were confirmed by three World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH)-recommended methods and further studied to compare the Vietnam and China reference strains to the new clinical cases. Methods: Three methods recommended by WOAH for agent detection (PCR, virus isolation, and transmission electron microscopy) were used to confirm this clinical LSD case. The sequence analysis of three well-known markers (P32, RPO30, and GPCR genes) has been utilized in Vietnam to understand this circulating pathogen better. Results: Our findings showed that the CX01 LSDV strain is 100% identical to the Vietnam reference strain HL01 and China reference strains based on P32 and RPO30 genes. Interestingly, analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the GPCR gene showed that the CX01 strain belongs to the same cluster as the reference strains, but it has branches different from those of both the HL01 and China LSDV strains. The nucleotide identification between the CX01 strain and these reference virus strains ranked 99.65%-99.91%, suggesting that it is a new variant of LSDV. Conclusion: This finding is new and indicates that at least two variants of the LSD virus were circulating in Vietnam based on analysis of the GPCR gene. Additionally, these results suggest that the sequence analysis of the GPCR gene is a great tool for subgrouping LSDV circulating in Vietnam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
