5. Sesquiterpene glycosides from Sapindus mukorossi.

Abstract

A phytochemical investigation of Sapindus mukorossi pericarps yielded six acyclic sesquiterpene glycosides (1 − 6), including three new compounds, named mukuroziosides A−C (1 − 3). Structural characterization was confirmed by an extensive analysis of 1D and 2D NMR and HR-ESI-QTOF mass spectra. Notably, compound 4 was isolated from natural sources for the first time. The antibacterial effects of all compounds were evaluated against six bacterial strains: Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC299212), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC25923), Bacillus cereus (ATCC14579), Escherichia coli (ATCC25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853), and Salmonella enterica (ATCC13076). All compounds were demonstrated minimum inhibitory concentration of >400 μM, indicating inactivity against these bacterial strains. Abstract

Chemical study of the fermentation culture of the marine‐derived fungal strain Penicilliumsp. OPR23‐FS02 led to isolation of ten secondary metabolites, including two terpenes, purpuride (1) and penioxalicin (2) and eight polyketides, trans‐3,4‐dihydro‐3,4,8‐trihydroxynaphthalen‐1(2H)‐one (3), chloromonilinic acid B (4), chrysophanol (5), emodin (6), ω‐hydroxyemodin (7), questin (8), endocrocin (9), and ergochrome F (10). Their structures were elucidated by analyzing their NMR and HRESI mass spectra and comparing with the literature data. Compound 9was weakly cytotoxic against HepG2 cell line, with an IC50value of 89.86 ± 2.63 µm. Compounds 4and 10showed antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecaliswhereas 6inhibited Bacillus cereusgrowth, with the same MIC values of 64 µm. Purpuride (1), penioxalicin (2), trans‐3,4‐dihydro‐3,4,8‐trihydroxynaphthalen‐1(2H)‐one (3), chloromonilinic acid B (4), chrysophanol (5), emodin (6), ω‐hydroxyemodin (7), questin (8), endocrocin (9), and ergochrome F (10) were isolated from a fermentation culture of Penicillium sp. Abstract

Phytochemical investigation of a methanol extract of Panax pseudoginseng flower buds resulted in the isolation of 22 dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins, including three new compounds, pseudoginsenosides A-C (1-3), and 19 known analogs. Their chemical structures were identified by the comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including 1 D and 2 D NMR and mass spectra. Abstract

International audience; Building a safety case is a common approach to make expert judgement explicit about safety of a system. The issue of confidence in such argumen-tation is still an open research field. Providing quantitative estimation of confidence is an interesting approach to manage complexity of arguments. This paper explores the main current approaches, and proposes a new model for quantitative confidence estimation based on Belief Theory for its definition, and on Bayesian Belief Networks for its propagation in safety case networks.

Abstract

This paper aims to present the MIRAS project : a multimodal interactive robot developed to provide assistance in strolling for people suffering from locomotion troubles. The first part of this paper summarizes goals and expected impacts of the project. Each work package is then detailed: description of use-cases and associated multimodal functions, conception and realization of the robot, security analysis and clinical validation. First results of user tests are analyzed to focus on users and developers feedback. Before concluding the paper, a short discussion about interests and problematic of the study is exposed., L’objet de cet article est de présenter le projet MIRAS : Robot avec interaction multimodale pour l’assistance à la déambulation. Les objectifs de ce projet sont exposés dans un premier temps ; puis chaque axe de travail est détaillé : description des scenarii et fonctions multimodales associées, présentation du travail de conception et de réalisation du robot, synthèse de l’étude de sécurité et, enfin, présentation des travaux menés pour la validation clinique. Les résultats des premiers essais pilotes sont également analysés pour souligner les points d’amélioration. Enfin, une discussion sur l’intérêt de l’étude et ses problématiques est menée avant de conclure l’article.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate properties of diffusion processes in porous media. Porous media are modelled by random Sierpinski carpets, each carpet is constructed by mixing two different generators with the same linear size. Diffusion on porous media is studied by performing random walks on random Sierpinski carpets and is characterized by the random walk dimension $d_w$. In the first part of this work we study $d_w$ as a function of the ratio of constituents in a mixture. The simulation results show that the resulting $d_w$ can be the same as, higher or lower than $d_w$ of carpets made by a single constituent generator. In the second part, we discuss the influence of static external fields on the behavior of diffusion. The biased random walk is used to model these phenomena and we report on many simulations with different field strengths and field directions. The results show that one structural feature of Sierpinski carpets called traps can have a strong influence on the observed diffusion properties. In the third part, we investigate the effect of diffusion under the influence of external fields which change direction back and forth after a certain duration. The results show a strong dependence on the period of oscillation, the field strength and structural properties of the carpet.

22. Content-based image retrieval from a database of fracture images

Abstract

This article describes the use of a medical image retrieval system on a database of 16'000 fractures, selected from surgical routine over several years. Image retrieval has been a very active domain of research for several years. It was frequently proposed for the medical domain, but only few running systems were ever tested in clinical routine. For the planning of surgical interventions after fractures, x-ray images play an important role. The fractures are classified according to exact fracture location, plus whether and to which degree the fracture is damaging articulations to see how complicated a reparation will be. Several classification systems for fractures exist and the classification plus the experience of the surgeon lead in the end to the choice of surgical technique (screw, metal plate, ...). This choice is strongly influenced by the experience and knowledge of the surgeons with respect to a certain technique. Goal of this article is to describe a prototype that supplies similar cases to an example to help treatment planning and find the most appropriate technique for a surgical intervention. Our database contains over 16'000 fracture images before and after a surgical intervention. We use an image retrieval system (GNU Image Finding Tool, GIFT) to find cases/images similar to an example case currently under observation. Problems encountered are varying illumination of images as well as strong anatomic differences between patients. Regions of interest are usually small and the retrieval system needs to focus on this region. Results show that GIFT is capable of supplying similar cases, particularly when using relevance feedback, on such a large database. Usual image retrieval is based on a single image as search target but for this application we have to select images by case as similar cases need to be found and not images. A few false positive cases often remain in the results but they can be sorted out quickly by the surgeons. Image retrieval can well be used for the planning of operations by supplying similar cases. A variety of challenges has been identified and partly solved (varying luminosity, small region of interested, case-based instead of image-based). This article mainly presents a case study to identify potential benefits and problems. Several steps for improving the system have been identified as well and will be described at the end of the paper.

26. An Oxazole Alkaloid, Terpenoids, and Cyclodipeptides With Cytotoxic and Nitric Oxide Inhibitory Effects From a Mangrove-Derived Fungus Trichoderma sp. GXT-22.1.

Abstract

Chemical investigation of the mangrove-derived fungus Trichoderma sp. GXT-22.1 led to the isolation and identification of 10 secondary metabolites, including one new compound, 5'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1',3'-oxazole (1), one new natural compound, (E)-6,10-dimethyl-5-undecene-2,9,10-triol (2), along with eight known compounds, tricholumin A (3), harzianol J (4), cyclonerodiol (5), 10,11-dihydro-11-hydroxycyclonerodiol (6), cyclonerodiol B (7), epicyclonerodiol oxide (8), cyclo(Val-Pro) (9), and cyclo-(4-hydroxyprolinyl-leucine) (10). The structural feature of oxazole in 1 was unusually found among the fungal metabolites. Compounds 1 and 4 exhibited weak cytotoxicity toward HepG2 and MCF-7 human carcinoma cell lines at the concentration of 100 µM, with induction of 41.5 ± 3.0% and 39.3 ± 2.3% cell death, respectively. Compounds 1-5, 8, and 10 showed their inhibitory effect against nitric oxide (NO) overproduction in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, with half inhibition concentration values ranging from 37.5 ± 2.6 to 86.5 ± 5.1 µM.
