1. Electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors of the pseudoscalar mesons: An algebraic model computation

Abstract

We compute electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors of ground-state pseudoscalar mesons: $\pi,\,K,\,\eta_c,\,\eta_b$. To this end, we employ an algebraic model based upon the coupled formalism of Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations. Within this approach, the dressed quark propagator and the relevant Bethe-Salpeter amplitude encode the internal structure of the corresponding meson. Electromagnetic properties of the meson are probed via the quark-photon interaction. The algebraic model employed by us unifies the treatment of all ground-state pseudoscalar mesons. Its parameters are carefully fitted performing a global analysis of existing experimental data including the knowledge of the charge radii of the mesons studied. We then compute and predict electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors for a wide range of probing photon momentum-squared which is of direct relevance to the experimental observations carried out thus far or planned at different hadron physics facilities such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) and the forthcoming Electron-Ion Collider. Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. Abstract

We carry out a comprehensive survey of electromagnetic form factors of all light, heavy and heavy-light ground-state pseudoscalar and scalar mesons. Our analysis is based upon a Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector $\times$ vector contact interaction. It incorporates confinement and ensures axial vector and vector Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied along with the corresponding corollaries such as the Goldberger-Treiman relations. The algebraic simplicity of the model allows us to compute the form factors at arbitrarily large virtualities of the probing photon momentum squared with relative ease. Wherever possible and insightful, we compare our results for the electromagnetic form factors and the charge radii with those obtained earlier through Schwinger-Dyson equations, lattice and with experimental observations available. 5. Pseudo-scalar mesons: light front wave functions, GPDs and PDFs

Abstract

We develop a unified algebraic model which satisfactorily describes the internal structure of pion and kaon as well as heavy quarkonia ($\eta_c$ and $\eta_b$). For each of these mesons, we compute their generalized parton distributions (GPDs), built through the overlap representation of their light-front wave function, tightly constrained by the modern and precise knowledge of their quark distribution amplitudes. From this three-dimensional knowledge of mesons, we deduce parton distribution functions (PDFs) as well as electromagnetic form factors and construct the impact parameter space GPDs. The PDFs for mesons formed with light quarks are then evolved from the hadronic scale of around 0.3 GeV to 5.2 GeV, probed in experiments. 40. Fibroblast growth factor-21 protects against fibrosis in hypertensive heart disease

Abstract

FGF21 is an endocrine factor that contributes to multiple pathophysiological processes, mainly via its action as a metabolic regulator and cardioprotective agent. Recent studies have shown increased circulating FGF21 levels in hypertensive patients and in mouse models of hypertension. However, the relevance of FGF21 in hypertensive heart disease has not been addressed. Hypertension was induced by treating 4-month old WT and Fgf21 -/- mice with angiotensin II (AngII) for 1 week, resulting in a similar increase in blood pressure in both genotypes. Plasma FGF21 levels and expression in heart and liver were significantly increased in hypertensive WT mice relative to controls, an effect that was associated with increased expression levels of ß-klotho specifically in the heart. Fgf21 -/- mice developed a greater degree of hypertensive heart disease than WT mice, notably characterized by extensive cardiac dysfunction and fibrosis. In vitro and in vivo studies further showed that FGF21 exerted a marked protective effect against cardiac fibrosis. Finally, left ventricle biopsies from human hypertensive heart donors, especially those developing cardiomyopathy, showed a significant increase in FGF21expression compared with normotensive controls, a finding that was associated with significantly enhanced cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. We conclude that during hypertension, both systemic and cardiac-produced FGF21 are induced and act on the heart, protecting it from hypertensive heart disease. Thus, FGF21 acts as key factor in the fibrogenesis associated with hypertensive heart disease. Copyright © 2018 Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Abstract

Laser shock processing (LSP) is increasingly applied as an effective technology for improving the properties of different metallic components. This is done principally to enhance their corrosion and fatigue life behaviour, stress corrosion cracking resistance, etc. In this paper, LSP has been applied to a commercially pure Mg and a Mg-1Zn alloy (wt%) which is aimed to be used as a biodegradable material for biomedical applications. The rational for microalloying with Zn is not only influencing the bacterial response, but also enhancing corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of Mg without causing any toxic effect. The present work is focussed on the examination of the effects of the LSP treatment on the relevant surface related properties of the samples and their correlation with the surface and subsurface induced modifications such as residual stress state, microstructural, roughness, hardness, etc. Central to this investigation is the study of the corrosion response and antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus epidermidis of the different samples as a function of material and LSP parameters. The results show that the application of LSP introduces compressive residual stresses up to 1 mm deep. This occurs together with a significant improvement in corrosion resistance, and less bacterial colonization.

Abstract

Accurate models for predicting generation, demand, prices, and storage under uncertainties are essential for managing safe, sustainable and reliable electric grids. In this investigation, the use of data-mining methods for building models of electrical consumption and renewable generation aimed at integrating renewable generation for smart grid control is studied. The results presented are part of the I3RES project that aims at building future energy solutions for smart electric grids considering the typical uncertainties of the renewable generation. Our results indicate that the data-mining techniques are able to provide forecasts with reasonable accuracy in the presence of uncertainties. Furthermore, such forecasts are useful in building controllers that can perform control actions such as demand side management in smart grids.

Abstract

Fibroblast growth factor-21 (Fgf21) is an endocrine factor that contributes to many physiological and pathological processes, mainly via its action as a metabolic regulator. Recent studies have shown that Fgf21 plays an important role in cardiac tissue. Pregnancy offers a physiological model of adaptive and reversible heart enlargement, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this cardiac hypertrophy are poorly understood. Therefore, the aim was to analyze the role of Fgf21 during late pregnancy, and assess the physiological relevance of Fgf21 for cardiac tissue during this process.

Abstract

The GB virus C (GBV-C)/hepatitis G virus (HGV) is a member of the Flaviviridae family. Based on the clinical and epidemiological profiles, this virus could be acquired mainly by parenteral transmission through contaminated blood. We therefore investigated the presence of GBV-C/HGV and its relation with the other blood borne viruses as hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) in hemodialysis and thalassemic individuals and blood donors from Ribeirão Preto-Brazil. Detection of blood borne virus markers including HBV surface antigen (HbsAg), HBV core antibody (anti-Hbc) and HCV antibody was carried out. HIV-1, HIV-2, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 were also investigated. GBV-C/HGV RNA was detected by reverse transcriptase and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Ninety-four serum samples from patients with chronic renal failure were analyzed. GBV-C/HGV RNA was identified in 12 (12.8%) patients, anti-HCV antibodies in 28 (29.8%), anti-Hbc in 9 (9.6%), anti-HIV in 1 (1%), HBsAg in 33 (35.1%), and HBsAg/ anti-HBc was observed in 2 (2.1%) patients. Thirty-six (38.3%) samples were non-reactive. Seven of the 12 GBV-C/HGV RNA infected samples were co-infected with other viruses: 3 (25%) with HBsAg, 2 (16.7%) with anti-HCV and 2 (16.7%) with anti-HBc/anti-HCV/HBsAg. Among the 42 thalassemic patients GBV-C/HGV RNA was detected in 6/42 patients (14.2 %). Three patients presented GBV-C/HGV, with other blood borne markers. We also detected GBV-C/ HGV in 6/50 (12%) blood donors. In these GBV-C/HGV positive thalassemics patients, 50% (3/6) were young individuals (lesser 15 years old) and 67% (4/6) were female patients. The presence of GBV-C RNA in the absence of hepatitis B and C infection in the young patients and healthy donors could be indicate that this virus is capable of independent transmission and does not contribute to liver disease.

Abstract

High-fat diet leads to development of cardiac dysfunction through molecular mechanisms poorly known. The aim of this study is to elucidate the early events in cardiac dysfunction caused by a high-fat diet, before massive alterations due to obesity and indirect mechanisms of heart damage take place. Moreover, we analyzed the role of Sirt1, a major mediator of cardiac gene regulation, in these effects. Short-term high-fat feeding (5 weeks) caused a similar mild increase in body weight and triglyceridaemia in wild-type (wt) and Sirt1(+/-) mice. The high-fat diet suppressed the expression of lipid catabolism (PPARa target) gene expression in the hearts of wt mice, but not Sirt1(+/-) mice. Pro-inflammatory genes were induced and estrogen-related receptor-alpha (ERRa) target genes was suppressed in the hearts of wt fed the high-fat diet, but not in Sirt1(+/-) mice. We found the formation of a complex between PPARa and Sirt1 in wt mice under high-fat diet conditions which might account for suppression of the ERRa pathway. Sirt1 haploinsufficiency impairs the formation of this complex and promotes the binding of PPARa to the p65 subunit of NF-?B, thereby mediating inhibition of pro-inflammatory pathways and induction of PPARa target genes. Short-term high-fat diet causes metabolic and inflammatory alterations in heart, and Sirt1 is critical for mediating these cardiac alterations. The capacity of Sirt1 to interact with transcriptional regulators such as NF-?B and PPARa appears to be involved in the cardiac responsiveness to a high-fat diet.
