4. Game-Themed Programming Assignment Modules: A Pathway for Gradual Integration of Gaming Context into Existing Introductory Programming Courses

Abstract

Despite the proven success of using computer video games as a context for teaching introductory programming (CS1/2) courses, barriers including the lack of adoptable materials, required background expertise (in graphics/games), and institutional acceptance still prevent interested faculty members from experimenting with this approach. Game-themed programming assignment (GTA) modules are designed specifically for these faculty members. The GTA modules are independent, and each is a self-contained game-like programming assignment that challenges students on concepts pertaining to a specific curriculum topic area. A faculty member can selectively pick and choose a subset of GTA modules to experiment with and gradually adopt the materials in his or her own classes. Each GTA module also includes a step-by-step tutorial guide that supports and encourages interested faculty to develop their own expertise and game-themed materials. This paper begins with a survey of previous results. Based on this survey, the paper summarizes the important considerations when designing materials for selective adoption. The paper then describes the design, implementation, and assessment of the GTA modules. The results from ongoing GTA workshops for CS1/2 faculty members and from a yearlong project in adopting the GTA modules in classes are then presented. In this case, the collected results verified that introductory programming concepts can be examined, practiced, and learned by means of GTA modules when neither the faculty nor the students involved have backgrounds in graphics or games. More importantly, these results demonstrated that it is straightforward to "blend" the GTA modules into existing classes with minimum alterations. In these ways, the GTA modules are excellent catalysts enabling faculty to begin exploring and developing their own expertise and materials to teach with games. (Contains 14 figures.)

Abstract

A few studies have reported the safety profile of interleukin (IL)-1 blockers from real life. The aim of this study is to describe anakinra (ANA) and canakinumab (CAN) safety profile in children and adults, based on data from a real-life setting. Demographic, clinical, and therapeutic data from patients treated with ANA and CAN were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Four hundred and seventy five patients were enrolled; ANA and CAN were prescribed in 421 and 105 treatment courses, respectively. During a mean follow-up of 24.39 ± 27.04 months, 89 adverse events (AE) were recorded; 13 (14.61%) were classified as serious AE (sAE). The overall estimated rate of AE and sAE was 8.4 per 100 patients/year. Safety concerns were more frequent among patients aged ≥ 65 years compared with patients < 16 years (p = 0.002). No differences were detected in the frequency of safety concerns between monotherapy and combination therapy with immunosuppressants (p = 0.055), but a significant difference was observed when injection site reactions were excluded from AE (p = 0.01). No differences were identified in relation to gender (p = 0.462), different lines of biologic therapy (p = 0.775), and different dosages (p = 0.70 ANA; p = 0.39 CAN). The overall drug retention rate was significantly different according to the occurrence of safety concerns (p value < 0.0001); distinguishing between ANA and CAN, significance was maintained only for ANA (p < 0.0001 ANA; p > 0.05 CAN). Treatment duration was the only variable associated with onset of AE (OR = 0.399 [C.I. 0.250–0.638], p = 0.0001). ANA and CAN have shown an excellent safety profile; the risk for AE and sAE tends to decrease over time from the start of IL-1 inhibition.

Abstract

Introduction: the aim of this study is to presents the results of our preliminary series of 8 partial nephroureterectomy performed by retroperitoneoscopy using harmonic scalpel with a preoperative 3D virtual reconstruction of bidimensional magnetic resonance images in children affected by duplication of the renal system. Materials and methods: We perform a retrospective study in our Pediatric Surgery Unit from January 2007 to January 2012 of all children affected by duplication of the renal system treated by retroperitoneal laparoscopic approach. Images collected were reconstructed using IRCAD VR render software. Data include: sex, age at surgery, clinical and radiological features, surgical procedure, follow-up and complications. Results: retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephroureterectomy was performed in 8 children (6 males and 2 females). All patients had a non-functioning moiety of a duplex kidney and in addition recurrent urinary tract infections. Two cases were associated with ureterocele; of them in one case we performed a previous endoscopic incision of the obstructing ureterocele. All patients underwent radiological evaluation prior to surgery, by ultrasound, voididng cystourethrography, renal scintigraphy and contrast-enhanced MRI evaluations. Images collected were reconstructed using IRCAD VR render software. Patients were treated by a 3-4 trocars technique and parenchymal section was performed using harmonic scalpel. The mean operative time was 180 minutes; no cases required open conversion. The mean hospital stay was 5 days. The mean follow-up was 38 months. No cases of secondary atrophy of the lower pole were observed. Discussion: Volume rendering gives high anatomical resolution and it can be useful to guide the surgical procedure. Laparoscopic retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy is a safe and feasible procedure in children for experienced pediatric laparoscopic surgeons.
