Solar Physics - Abstract
Observations of energetic ions from the COSPIN instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft at 2.5 AU during the March 1991 series of solar flare events arae presented. The intensity profiles observed during this sequence of events were affected both by the presence of interplanetary shocks and large-scale discontinuities in the magnetic field, the low-energy (about 1 MeV) protons being influenced mainly by the shocks and the discontinuities, and the high-energy (about 100 MeV) protons by the discontinuities. The first shock observed at Ulysses was followed by several discontinuities and a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) which were probably moving with the shock. Particles following this shock were prevented from propagating freely into the heliosphere by the structure moving with the shock, and were carried along with it. A second shock was followed by a region containing bi-directional particle anisotropies. A subsequent enhancement of low-energy particles suggests the passage of another shock. This was followed by a slow intensity decay which coincided with a second CME and where bi-directional particle anisotropies were again observed.

Spacecraft Instrumentation - Abstract
The Ulysses experimental program termed Cosmic Ray and Solar Particle Investigation (COSPIN) is described, with special attention given to the scientific objectives of the COSPIN, the measurements performed, the initial postlaunch results, and the characteristics of the individual COSPIN instruments. The instrument package of the COSPIN experiment includes the Low Energy Telescope, the High Energy Telescope, the High-Flux Telescope, the Electron Telescope, the Digital Processing Unit, two Anisotropy Telescopes, and two dc/dc power converters. Preliminary results obtained from quick-look data from COSPIN telescopes showed that the instruments are functioning properly and that their design has achieved both the wide dynamic range and the precision required in this mission.

The 8B flux from elastic scattering (ES) and charged current (CC) of electrons was recorded at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) between November 2, 1999 and January 15, 2001. Data were partitioned into two sets then analyzed. As a result, the first direct indication of a nonelectron flavor component in the solar neutrino flux was established.

Space Radiation - Abstract
The recent extreme ultraheavy cosmic-ray observations (Z greater than or equal to 70) are compared with r-process models. A detailed cosmic ray propagation calculation is used to transform the calculated source distributions to those observed at the earth. The r-process production abundances are calculated using different mass formulae and beta-rate formulae; an empirical estimate based on the observed solar-system abundances is also used. There is the continued strong indication of an r-process dominance in the extreme ultraheavy cosmic rays. It is shown that the observed high actinide/Pt ratio in the cosmic rays cannot be fitted with the same r-process calculation which also fits the solar-system material. This result suggests that the cosmic rays probably undergo some preferential acceleration in addition to the apparent general enrichment in heavy (r-process) material. An estimate is also made of the expected relative abundance of superheavy elements in the cosmic rays if the anomalous heavy xenon in carbonaceous chondrites is due to a fissioning superheavy element.

Solar Physics - Abstract
Data on solar flares and perodic particle intensity enhancements in the energy range from 1 to 20 MeV/n are examined. It is found that: (1) Fe/He-4 ratios range from about 1 to 1000 times the solar ratio of 0.0004; (2) these high ratios mitigate against extended storage and large amounts of nuclear processing; (3) the CNO/He-4 ratio has a much smaller range of variability and a mean value of 0.02; (4) large He-3 and Fe enrichments are strongly associated, but not on a one-to-one basis; (5) large Fe enhancements sometimes occur without correspondingly large He-3 enrichments; and (6) none of the models so far advanced adequately explains the observed He-3 and heavy-nucleus enrichments.

Space Radiation - Abstract
It is indicated that the observations with the high-resolution solid-state charged-particle telescopes of the IMP-5 and IMP-6 earth satellites have resolved all the hydrogen and helium isotopes of solar-flare origin in groups of solar flares during the period from September, 1969, through November, 1972. The values obtained for the average isotope ratios are given and are compared with previous values. It is concluded that the observed high yields of H(2), H(3) and He(3) can be explained only by high-energy nuclear interactions and that an acceleration process must have taken place in the chromosphere at that time.

Physics, Atomic, Molecular, And Nuclear - Abstract
Measurements of solar flare hydrogen, deuterium, tritium, helium-3, and helium-4 in the energy range approximately 10 to 50 MeV per nucleon obtained with instrumentation on the IMP-4 and IMP-5 satellites are reported and studies based on these results which place several constraints on theories of solar flare particle acceleration are discussed. A brief review of previous work and the difficulties in studying the rare isotopes of hydrogen and helium is also included. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that the information to be obtained from the solar flare products of high energy interactions is not available through either solar wind observations where both the acceleration mechanism and the coronal source of the nuclear species are different, or optical measurements of solar active regions.

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a 1,000 tonne heavy water Cerenkov-based neutrino detector situated 2,000 meters underground in INCO's Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. For the neutrinos from [sup 8]B decay in the Sun SNO observes the Charged Current neutrino reaction sensitive only to electron neutrinos and others (Neutral Current and Elastic Scattering) sensitive to all active neutrino types and thereby can search for direct evidence of neutrino flavor change. Using these reactions and assuming the standard [sup 8]B shape, the ν[sub e] component of the [sup 8]B solar flux is φ[sub e] = 1.76[sup +0.05, sub -0.05](stat.)[sup +0.09, sub -0.09] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -1] for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non-ν[sub e] component is φ[sub μτ] = 3.41[sup +0.45, sub -0.45](stat.)[sup +0.48, sub 0.45] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -l], 5.3σ greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar ν[sub e] flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is φ[sub NC] = 5.09[sup +0.44, sub -0.43](stat.)[sup +0.46, sub -0.43] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -1] consistent with solar models. For charged current events, assuming an undistorted [sup 8]B spectrum, the night minus day rate is 14.0% ± 6.3%[sup +1.5. sub -1.4]% of the average rate. If the total flux of active neutrinos is additionally constrained to have no asymmetry, the ν[sub e] asymmetry is found to be 7.0% ± 4.9%[sup +1.3, sub -1.2]%. A global solar neutrino analysis in terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favors the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The measurement of day and night neutrino energy spectra at Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and constraints on neutrino mixing parameters were presented. A global solar neutrino analysis in terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favored the large mixing angle solution. Results obtained were the first direct measurements of the day-night asymmetries in the νe flux and the total ν flux from the Sun was deduced.

- Abstract
Solar neutrinos from (8)B decay have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The flux of nu(e)'s is measured by the CC reaction rate to be straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) = 1.75 +/- 0.07(stat)(+0.12)(-0.11)(syst) +/- 0.05(theor) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1). Comparison of straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) to the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration's precision value of the flux inferred from the ES reaction yields a 3.3 sigma difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence of an active non- nu(e) component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is determined to be 5.44+/-0.99 x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1).
