OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe the psychological and psychosocial constructs and outcome measures used in tendinopathy research. DESIGN: Scoping review. LITERATURE SEARCH: We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro, CINAHL, and APA PsychNet databases on July 10, 2021, for all published studies of tendinopathy populations measuring psychological and psychosocial factors. STUDY SELECTION: Studies using a clinical diagnosis of tendinopathy or synonyms (eg, jumper's knee or subacromial impingement) with or without imaging confirmation. DATA SYNTHESIS: We described the volume, nature, distribution, and characteristics of psychological and psychosocial outcomes reported in the tendinopathy field. RESULTS: Twenty-nine constructs were identified, including 16 psychological and 13 psychosocial constructs. The most frequently-reported constructs were work-related outcomes (32%), quality of life (31%), depression (30%), anxiety (18%), and fear (14%). Outcome measures consisted of validated and nonvalidated questionnaires and 1-item custom questions (including demographics). The number of different outcome measures used to assess an individual construct ranged between 1 (emotional distress) and 11 (quality of life) per construct. CONCLUSION: There was a large variability in constructs and outcome measures reported in tendinopathy research, which limits conclusions about the relationship between psychological and psychosocial constructs, outcome measures, and tendinopathies. Given the wide range of psychological and psychosocial constructs reported, there is an urgent need to develop a core outcome set in tendinopathy. Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS), including gluteal tendinopathy and bursitis, is a common, painful and debilitating condition. It is thought to involve overload of the gluteal tendons, which may be amplified through increased hip adduction moment (HAM) seen during gait in these individuals. Reducing the aberrant HAM may improve pain and function in this population. We aimed to determine if medially-posted foot orthoses immediately reduce HAM and pain in females with GTPS during walking gait.A double-blind, repeated-measures trial with randomised intervention order compared three conditions in 53 women with GTPS. Participants acted as their own control during baseline (everyday-shoe insole), medially-posted (active) orthosis, or flat insert (sham orthosis) walking. Data were collected via three-dimensional gait analysis for HAM, hip, pelvic, and thorax kinematics; as well as ground reaction force; and pain via the numerical rating scale. Subgroup analysis was performed based on a pronated foot-posture defined by the Foot Posture Index.A small pain reduction was found between the active orthosis and flat insert (mean difference = -0.444, p = 0.017). No difference was detected for pain between other condition comparisons. Thoracic lateral flexion increased at second-peak HAM between the baseline and active conditions (mean difference = -0.917, p = 0.040). No differences were detected for HAM, remaining kinematic or kinetic variables, or ground reaction force data across the three conditions. No significant differences were detected between any of the three conditions for biomechanical or pain data in the pronated-foot subgroup.A medially-posted foot orthosis did not immediately alter gait biomechanics or provide a clinically meaningful pain reduction in women with GTPS. There is uncertainty regarding the clinical benefit of orthoses in the management of GTPS. Longer-term follow-up or the use of customised orthoses may produce different outcomes and should be explored in future research.

OBJECTIVES: There are a growing number of people aged over 55 years living in retirement communities in Australia. These communities typically consist of accommodation, services and community facilities which cater to older people and the desire to maintain independence. The Nutrition and Healthy Ageing Trajectories in Retirement Living (NutriHAT-RL) study aims to investigate the nutrition and lifestyle-based behaviours which contribute to healthy ageing and the maintenance of social and physical functioning among older people living in retirement communities. METHODS: This study will recruit a total of 2,770 people aged 55 years or over living in retirement communities in the Australian Capital Territory and southern New South Wales regions of Australia for a four-year prospective longitudinal study commencing in March 2021. A range of measures, including nutritional intake, health and lifestyle behaviours, cognitive and psychological function, and physical health, will be completed on three occasions over a total of four years. Participants will complete a face-to-face comprehensive, validated food frequency questionnaire at each time point. Risk of malnutrition and nutritional behaviour (emotional appetite and intuitive eating) will also be evaluated. Multiple mental, social, and physical health domains will be assessed at each time point. This will include cognitive and mental health (depression, anxiety, and loneliness) screening, social and occupational functioning questionnaires, self-reported and observed physical function assessments, and sleep quality. Bitter taste endophenotype, salivary C-reactive protein, telomere length, and blood biomarkers associated with healthy ageing will also be evaluated. RESULTS: Ethics approval has been obtained through the University of Canberra Human Ethics Research Committee (UCHREC-2306). To reduce risk of COVID-19 transmissions, a risk mitigation plan has been developed. CONCLUSIONS: The NutriHAT-RL study will be the first Australian longitudinal study with a focus on nutrition and healthy ageing in people living in retirement communities. Findings from this study will contribute to understanding of nutrition and healthy ageing in this growing population and will inform policy and practice related to nutrition and ageing in place. Social isolation and sedentary behaviour are common in residential aged care facilities (also known as nursing homes or long-term care). Use of new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality are currently under investigation for their potential to provide exciting and engaging activities for older people in residential aged care facilities. However, there is limited evidence on whether these technologies can promote physical activity in a small group setting for people with cognitive impairment. Using mixed methods, we examined the use of a virtual cycling experience in a sample of 10 participants with cognitive impairment living in residential aged care facilities. In a randomised crossover design, participants engaged in a 25-minute, self-paced, facilitated seated virtual cycling experience and a time-matched seated physical activity session in groups of five. All participants completed a brief pre- and post-intervention mood questionnaire. Video analysis was used for both conditions to compare levels of environmental stimulation, apathy and engagement using both the Person–Environment Apathy Rating Scale and the Engagement of a Person with Dementia Scale. A thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews following the virtual cycling experience was also performed. No differences were observed between conditions for all outcomes except for environmental stimulation, where there was a lower response in the intervention than the control condition ( p = 0.032). This was primarily driven by lower scores for the virtual cycling experience than control in physical accessibility ( p = 0.012). Participants reported the virtual cycling experience to be immersive and challenging and reminisced about cycling earlier in life. The activity manager observed that the virtual cycling experience was an overall positive experience and emphasised benefits of safety screening and preparation prior to the activities. The findings of this study support the use of the virtual cycling experience as an immersive and engaging alternative to usual activities, which might encourage higher levels of physical activity in residential aged care facilities.

Introduction Diagnostic Ultrasound (DU) plays an integral role in the assessment and mapping of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)(Neglen & Raju, 1992; Zygmunt, 2014) and in particular the assessment and documentation of perforator veins.(Eidson Iii & Bush, 2010). Also evident is a paucity of research around the reliability and validity of sonographer measurement, in particular for vascular ultrasound. The overall research aim is to develop a tool to measure reliability and validity between sonographers in the assessment of perforator veins. The outcome will be then to implement that tool within a group of experienced vascular sonographers. Methods Completed to date is: • a systematic review of the literature. • a two round Delphi Study that sought consensus around the critical parameters in the assessment of perforator veins and the design of a reliability/validity assessment instrument. The second round of the study was modified in response to the first round responses. • A total of 12 responded to both rounds of the study (5 vascular surgeons and 7 vascular sonographers). Results The literature review revealed a paucity of material in the literature examining the reliability and validity of sonographer's measurements. This lack is across sonography in general, including for the examination for CVI and perforator veins. It was expected the responses to the Delphi study would emphasise the traditional parameters of perforator location, diameter and competence and this was the case. A novel finding is that those practicing endovascular interventions were also interested in tortuosity of the perforator. A final data collection instrument was developed around these responses and this will be applied to the ultrasound examination of a series of patients with the first and second examiners double blinded to the result.

Background Effective treatment of hip pain improves population health and quality of life. Accurate differential diagnosis is fundamental to effective treatment. The diagnostic criteria for one common hip problem, greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) have not been well defined. Purpose To define the clinical presentation of GTPS. Methods Forty-one people with GTPS, 20 with hip osteoarthritis (OA), and 23 age-matched and sexmatched asymptomatic participants (ASC) were recruited. Inclusion and exclusion criteria ensured mutually exclusive groups. Assessment: the Harris hip score (HHS), a battery of clinical tests, and single leg stance (SLS). Participants identified the site of reproduced pain. Analysis: Fisher’s exact test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) informed recursive partitioning to develop two classification trees. Results Maximum walking distance and the ability to manipulate shoes and socks were the only HHS domains to differentiate GTPS from OA (ANOVA: p=0.010 and

Objective To evaluate if pelvic or hip width predisposed women to developing greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS). Design Prospective case control study. Participants Four groups were included in the study: those gluteal tendon reconstructions (n=31, GTR), those with conservatively managed GTPS (n=29), those with hip osteoarthritis (n=20, OA) and 22 asymptomatic participants (ASC). Methods Anterior-posterior pelvic x-rays were evaluated for femoral neck shaft angle; acetabular index, and width at the lateral acetabulum, and the superior and lateral aspects of the greater trochanter. Body mass index, and waist, hip and greater trochanter girth were measured. Data were analysed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA; posthoc Scheffe analysis), then multivariate analysis. Results The GTR group had a lower femoral neck shaft angle than the other groups (p=0.007). The OR (95% CI) of having a neck shaft angle of less than 134°, relative to the ASC group: GTR=3.33 (1.26 to 8.85); GTPS=1.4 (0.52 to 3.75); OA=0.85 (0.28 to 2.61). The OR of GTR relative to GTPS was 2.4 (1.01 to 5.6). No group difference was found for acetabular or greater trochanter width. Greater trochanter girth produced the only anthropometric group difference (mean (95% CI) in cm) GTR=103.8 (100.3 to 107.3), GTPS=105.9 (100.2 to 111.6), OA=100.3 (97.7 to 103.9), ASC=99.1 (94.7 to 103.5), (ANOVA: p=0.036). Multivariate analysis confirmed adiposity is associated with GTPS. Conclusion A lower neck shaft angle is a risk factor for, and adiposity is associated with, GTPS in women.
