Herein we present an alternative and transition-metal-free procedure to access 3-organoselanylthiochromones and 3-organoselanylchromones from the cyclization reaction between alkynyl aryl ketones and diorganyl diselenides promoted by Oxone®.

A new method was developed for the synthesis of 4-chalcogenyl-1H-isochromen-1-ones through the 6-endo-dig electrophilic cyclization of 2-alkynylaryl esters and diorganyl dichalcogenides under ultrasound irradiation. The reactions were performed under mild conditions, using Oxone as a green oxidant to promote the cleavage of the chalcogen-chalcogen bond in diorganyl diselenides and ditellurides to generate electrophilic species in situ. A total of 25 compounds were selectively obtained after 30-70 min, in good to excellent yields (74-95%). This procedure was extended to prepare 5H-selenopheno[3,2-c]isochromen-5-ones. Additionally, for the first time, the 4-chalcogenyl-1H-isochromen-1-ones were used as substrates in the thionation reaction, using Lawesson's reagent and microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions, obtaining the thio derivatives in yields of up to 99% in only 15 min.

We describe herein an alternative and transition-metal-free procedure for the access of benzo[b]chalcogenophenes fused to selenophenes via intramolecular cyclization of 1,3-diynes. This efficient protocol involves a double cyclization of 1,3-diynyl chalcogen derivatives promoted by the electrophilic species of organoselenium generated in situ by the oxidative cleavage of the Se-Se bond of dibutyl diselenide using Oxone® in acetonitrile as solvent in an open-flask at 80 °C. In this study, 15 selenophenes with broad substrate scope were prepared in moderate to excellent yields (55-98%) with short reaction times (0.5-3.0 h).

We report herein an alternative method for the synthesis of seleno-dibenzocycloheptenones and seleno-spiro[5.5]trienones through the radical cyclization of biaryl ynones in the presence of diorganyl diselenides, using Oxone as a green oxidizing agent. The reactions were conducted using acetonitrile as the solvent in a sealed tube at 100 °C. The protocol is operationally simple and scalable, exhibits high regioselectivity, and allows the synthesis of 24 dibenzocycloheptenones/spiro[5.5]trienones in yields of up to 99%, 17 of which are unpublished compounds. Additionally, synthetic transformations of the prepared compounds, such as oxidation and reduction reactions, are demonstrated.

Despite major advances, not all patients achieve rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remission, thus highlighting a pressing need for new therapeutic treatments. Given this scenario, this study sought to evaluate Se-[(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl] 4-chlorobenzoselenolate (Se-DMC) potential on a complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced unilateral arthritis model. The effects of Se-DMC (5 mg/kg; oral dose) and meloxicam (5 mg/kg; oral dose), both administered to animals daily for 14 days, on paw edema, mechanical sensitivity, neurobehavioral deficits (anxiogenic- and depressive-like behaviors), Na+/K+-ATPase activity, oxidative stress, and inflammation were evaluated in male Swiss mice exposed to CFA (intraplantar injection of 0.1 mL; 10 mg/mL). Se-DMC reduced the paw withdrawal threshold and CFA-induced paw edema. Histopathological results revealed the antiedematogenic potential of the compound, which was evidenced by lower quantities of dilated lymphatic vessels compared with the CFA group. Se-DMC reduced mRNA relative expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in the hippocampus and paw of CFA mice. The CFA-induced anxiogenic- and depressive-like behaviors were reversed by Se-DMC to the control levels in the elevated plus-maze and tail suspension tests. Se-DMC reduced the paw reactive species levels and restored the superoxide dismutase (hippocampus and paw) and Na+/K+-ATPase (hippocampus) activities previously increased by CFA. Moreover, CFA administration inhibited serum creatinine kinase activity, albeit the Se-DMC effects did not appear to involve the modulation of this enzyme and were equal to or greater than meloxicam. Se-DMC attenuates CFA-induced inflammatory response, nociception, and neurobehavioral deficits in mice.

This review presents the recent advances involving several applications of five-membered cyclic carbonates and derivatives. With more than 150 references, it covers the period from 2012 to 2020, with special emphasis on the use of five-membered cyclic carbonates as building blocks for organic synthesis and material elaboration. We demonstrate the application of cyclic carbonates in several important chemical transformations, such as decarboxylation, hydrogenation, and transesterification reactions, among others. The presence of cyclic carbonates in molecules with high biological potential is also displayed, together with the importance of these compounds in the preparation of materials such as urethanes, polyurethanes, and flame retardants.

We report a protocol for the synthesis of 3-organyl-4-(organylchalcogenyl)isoquinoline-2-oxides via electrophilic cyclization between alkynylbenzaldoximes and diorganyl dichalcogenides promoted by Oxone. A total of 21 3-organyl-4-(organylchalcogenyl)isoquinoline-2-oxides were selectively obtained in yields of up 93% under an ultrasound irradiation condition in short reaction times (10-70 min). Additionally, the synthetic usefulness of the 3-phenyl-4-(phenylselanyl)isoquinoline-2-oxide was demonstrated in the annulation reaction with 1-(2-bromophenyl)-3-phenylprop-2-yn-1-one and in the deoxygenation reaction with phenylboronic acid.

Oxone mediated reaction of imidazo[2,1-b]thiazole, imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine and 1H-pyrazole derivatives with diaryl diselenides is presented here. The methodology represents an efficient and simple protocol for carrying out the selective synthesis of 5-arylselanyl-imidazo[2,1-b]thiazoles, 3-arylselanyl-imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and 4-arylselanyl-1H-pyrazoles in high yields using a stable, nontoxic and cheap oxidant. The reactions were conducted at 60 °C in air using acetonitrile as solvent. Alternatively, the use of ultrasound irradiation is presented as a tool for fast and efficient energy transfer that significantly reduced the reaction time.

Organochalcogen compounds present synthetic and biological applications of extreme relevance. The coupling reaction between boronic acids, borate anions or boronic esters with different sources of chalcogen (S, Se and Te), mediated by transition metals, is a powerful tool for the formation of functionalized diorganyl chalcogenides. By this strategy, selenides, sulfides, and tellurides with high complexity and molecular diversity can be prepared in good to excellent yields. This review covers the use of organoboron compounds as a versatile reagent for the formation of Carbon–Chalcogen bonds using different metallic catalysts (Cu, Ag, Pd, Fe, In, Rh, Ni).

The present study evaluated the antioxidant, antinociceptive and anti-edematogenic effects of Se-[(2,2-dimethyl-l,3-dioxolan-4-yl) methyl] 4-chlorobenzoselenolate (Se-DMC). In vitro experiments were carried out to evaluate Se-DMC antioxidant action. Thiobarbituric acid reactive species levels, 2,2’-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2’-azino-bis(3-thylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radicals scavenging and glutathione S-transferase-like activity were determined. Male Swiss mice were orally pretreated with Se-DMC (1,10 and 50 mg/kg), meloxicam (50 mg/kg) or vehicle 30 min prior to acetic acid or glutamate test. To extend our knowledge of the pharmacological properties of this compound, it was tested in an inflammatory model through ear edema induced by croton oil. The contribution of glutamatergic and serotonergic systems was also investigated. In vitro experiments revealed that Se-DMC exerts antioxidant activity. Nociception induced by glutamate or acetic acid was reduced by Se-DMC or meloxicam. Se-DMC diminished the paw edema formation induced by glutamate, while meloxicam did not show any effect. Se-DMC and meloxicam decreased the ear edema formation and protected against the increase in myeloperoxidase activity in mice ear induced by croton oil. The pretreatment of animals with MK-801 did not alter antinociception caused by Se-DMC in the glutamate test. The antinociceptive effect exerted by Se-DMC in the acetic acid test was reverted by the pretreatment of mice with different serotonergic antagonists (WAY100635, ketanserin and pindolol). Data presented here showed that the modulation of serotonergic and glutamatergic systems and the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions could contribute to the antinociceptive and anti-edematogenic effects of Se-DMC and it supported the therapeutic potential of this compound.

The growing in the number of papers on the synthesis and application of organochalcogen compounds has been accompanied by a concern about how they are prepared. Here, we provide a comprehensive and updated review on recent synthetic methods available for their synthesis using alternative solvents or solvent-free conditions and non-classical energy sources (microwaves irradiation, sonochemistry and mechanochemistry). Organized in fourteen sections, this review brings the more than one hundred alternative methods described so far to access organic compounds containing selenium, tellurium and sulfur.

Two new organochalcogen-containing zingerone derivatives, 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-(phenylseleno)-2-butanone ( 2b ) and 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-(phenylthio)-2-butanone ( 2c ) were prepared and evaluated for their antioxidant properties. DPPH and lipid peroxidation studies show that 2b and 2c have significantly improved antioxidant activity over dehydrozingerone ( 1 ) despite having similar electron transfer capacity. We speculate that the improved activity of 2b and 2c is partly due to the ability of these compounds to act twice as phenolic antioxidants through a mechanism that eliminates phenylselenyl or phenylthiyl radicals.

An alternative green method was described for the synthesis of selanylesters by reactions of acyl chlorides with arylselenols, generated in situ by reaction of diaryl diselenides with hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) using polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) as the solvent. These reactions proceeded efficiently at room temperature under N2 using a range of acyl chlorides and diaryl diselenides, both containing electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups, affording the corresponding selanylesters in moderate to excellent yields. Additionally, PEG-400 can be recovered and directly reused for further reactions.

A simple and efficient protocol to prepare divinyl selenides has been developed by the regio- and stereoselective addition of sodium selenide species to aryl alkynes. The nucleophilic species was generates in situ, from the reaction of elemental selenium with NaBH4, utilizing PEG-400 as the solvent. Several divinyl selenides were obtained in moderate to excellent yields with selectivity for the (Z,Z)-isomer by a one-step procedure that was carried out at 60 °C in short reaction times. The methodology was extended to tellurium, giving the desired divinyl tellurides in good yields. Furthermore, the Fe-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of bis(3,5-dimethoxystyryl) selenide 3f with (4-methoxyphenyl)magnesium bromide 5 afforded resveratrol trimethyl ether 6 in 57% yield.

We describe here a metal-free and selective method for the synthesis of (E)-1-bromo-1-seleno alkenes and ketene selenoacetals by a stoichiometric and temperature-controlled reaction. These protocols employ a diverse array of 1,1-dibromoalkenes and different diaryl diselenides to afford the corresponding products in good yields and in a short reaction time.

We describe herein an efficient and simple method for the stereoselective hydrodebromination of 1,1-dibromoalkenes by using a catalytic amount of the nucleophilic species of tellurium, generated in situ by the reaction of elemental tellurium with NaBH4. By this methodology, (E)-bromoalkenes were obtained in moderate to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions, without the use of transition metals or base. Furthermore, a high stereoselectivity for the (E)-isomer was observed when 1,1-dibromoarylalkenes were used, thus indicating a promising alternative for future applications in organic synthesis.

Dehydrozingerone (DHZ) is a phenolic compound isolated from ginger rhizomes (Zingiber officinale). It is known for its diverse spectrum of biological activities as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor compound. The present study was designed to assess the antidepressant effect of DHZ and the involvement of the monoaminergic system and to evaluate its in vitro antioxidant activity in the hippocampus, cortex and cerebellum of mice. For this study, the tail suspension test (TST), forced swim test (FST) and yohimbine lethality test were performed. DHZ administered orally 30min prior to testing reduced the immobility time in the TST (1-40mg/kg) and the FST (10-40mg/kg), with no change in locomotor activity in the open field test. The antidepressant-like effect of DHZ (1mg/kg) was prevented by ketanserin (1mg/kg, i.p.; a 5-HT2A/2C receptor antagonist), ondansetron (1mg/kg, i.p.; a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist), prazosin (1mg/kg, i.p., an α1-adrenoceptor antagonist) and yohimbine (1mg/kg, i.p., an α2-adrenoceptor antagonist) pretreatments. Furthermore, DHZ administered at doses of 10 and 20mg/kg increased the lethality of yohimbine (35mg/kg, i.p.). DHZ had antioxidant activity on in vitro lipid peroxidation induced by sodium nitroprusside in all brain regions tested. The results revealed that DHZ has a potent antidepressant effect, which seems to involve the serotonergic and noradrenergic systems.

Imidazolium ionic liquids efficiently promote the selective synthesis of unsymmetrical diaryl selenides under mild conditions.

We described herein the use of imidazolium ionic liquids [bmim]PF6 and [bmim]BF4 in the selective, metal and catalyst-free synthesis of unsymmetrical diaryl selenides by electrophilic substitution in arylboron reagents with arylselenium halides (Cl and Br) at room temperature. This is a general substitution reaction and it was performed with arylboronic acids or potassium aryltrifluoroborates bearing electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups, affording the corresponding diaryl selenides in good to excellent yields. The ionic liquid [bmim][PF6] was easily recovered and utilized for further substitution reactions.

We describe herein the use of glycerol as an efficient, safe and recyclable solvent in the one-pot hetero-Diels–Alder (HDA) reaction of ( R )-citronellal with substituted arylamines. The catalyst-free reactions proceed easily using glycerol at 90 °C and the corresponding octahydroacridines (OHAs) were obtained in good to excellent yields by simply decantation of products. After removing the products, glycerol was directly reused for further HDA reactions without lost of activity.
