Designers and developers of pervasive technologies have started to address privacy concerns. However, little work has been done to address the numerous safety concerns for specific social and population groups that fall outside conventional threat modeling based on network-based adversaries. If researchers, engineers, and designers are conscious about concerns for privacy, they must also be considerate of the safety of users of their systems. By using feminist and justice-orientated lenses to technology creation and testing, we present the concept of safety as a challenge and a hopeful aspiration for pervasive computing. We present a feminist vision for the future of pervasive technologies that engages with issues of technology-mediated harms to mitigate or aim to eradicate them entirely. By examining two concrete concepts of trust and abusability that will assist on this aspirational journey, we highlight ways to build safer technologies that are grounded in justice and safety for all.

HCI engages with data science through many topics and themes. Researchers have addressed biased dataset problems, arguing that bad data can cause innocent software to produce bad outcomes. But what if our software is not so innocent? What if the human decisions that shape our data-processing software, inadvertently contribute their own sources of bias? And what if our data-work technology causes us to forget those decisions and operations? Based in feminisms and critical computing, we analyze forgetting practices in data work practices. We describe diverse beneficial and harmful motivations for forgetting. We contribute: (1) a taxonomy of data silences in data work, which we use to analyze how data workers forget, erase, and unknow aspects of data; (2) a detailed analysis of forgetting practices in machine learning; and (3) an analytic vocabulary for future work in remembering, forgetting, and erasing in HCI and the data sciences.

In this short paper, we introduce our Special Section in Feminist Theory titled ‘Feminist human-computer interaction: Struggles for past, contemporary and futuristic feminist theories in digital innovation’. Over the last years, we worked with the authors of the articles presented herein to bring together feminist theories with their practical application in the design, development, use and exploration of digital technologies. Our section follows three aspects: (1) an overview of past feminist histories and discourse; (2) the development of actionable, contemporary theory; and (3) speculative futures of what a feminist human-computer interaction (HCI) could be. Together with the contributing authors, we are excited to explore these areas of post-disciplinary connection at the intersection of theory, practice and activism.

Who is an activist? With the advent of activism-related scholarship in HCI and CSCW, the current challenge involves thinking about what activism is, who an activist is, and the opportunities and limitations of activism. Recently, researchers in academia and industry, such as Timnit Gebru, demonstrate a commitment to stay activated for the structural changes we need, for example, diverse and inclusive scholarship, to address overlapping problems, e.g., sexism, racism, and tokenism. Additionally, there is a continuing dominance of Western, formally educated, industrialized, rich and democratic (WEIRD) perspectives. Countering this requires collective efforts in citational justice and decolonial computing, among others. But such complex issues do not yet cover the inner conflicts that we face, such as mental health struggles while dismantling the prejudices stemming from the ivory tower, locating our privileges as academics while traversing less privileged locales of research sites, or the dilemmas on whether we are doing enough to fulfill our responsibilities to the people who have trusted us enough to work with us in the face of ”publish or perish” culture. This workshop explores what activism means within the CSCW community and how we can remain activated while harboring doubts and hopes in calling ourselves ”activists”.

The arts and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) have a lot in common. As part of computer science HCI is ground breaking, interdisciplinary and focused on the interactions that form part of our everyday world. As part of the arts, HCI is a lens on technology, showing us spaces where there is room to interact and create new and meaningful blended experiences. It is therefore no surprise that many researchers and practitioners in our field have and maintain creative practices alongside, and as part of their research. We explore how these dual practices relate to each other, and how we might reconcile our mindful creative experiences with the formality of research. What benefits does such duality have, and can we illustrate the value of arts practice in HCI? This pictorial curates diverse artistic practice from a range of researchers, and offers reflection on the benefits and tensions in creativity and computing.

This forum is dedicated to exploring the notion of meaningfulness in design processes, taking the perspectives of community groups, nongovernmental organizations, and those who are marginalized in society as starting points. In recent years HCI and CSCW work has increasingly begun to address complex social problems and issues of social justice worldwide. Such activist-leaning work is not without problems. Through the experiences and reflections of an activist becoming academic and an academic becoming an activist, we outline these difficulties such as (1) the risk of perpetuating violence, oppression and exploitation when working with marginalised communities, (2) the reception of activist-academic work within our academic communities, and (3) problems of social justice that exist within our academic communities. Building on our own experiences, practices and existing literature from a variety of disciplines we advocate for the possibility of an activist-academic practice, outline possible ways forward and formulate questions we need to answer for HCI to contribute to a more just world.

In this chapter, I bring together learning from all previous chapters to draw conclusions on how an ethos of social justice in the creation of collaboratively created e-textiles can promote meaningful and collaborative projects that bridge the divide between academia and charity service delivery to actively work towards and promote the development of more just futures and worlds. To conclude the book, I draw out two areas of reflection on quilting e-textiles as a participatory research process as a personal yet shared experience for wellbeing, and as a way of crafting sustainable partnerships and service delivery. Finally, I chart a potential future for digitally augmented craft practices where I see the sewing of e-textiles as a form of, and process for, collective action.

In this chapter, I chart a history of sewing and quilting in particular relate to issues of social justice. I document experiences of oppression in Chile and China before honing in on histories of sewing in the North of England and how women have used quilting as a way of making a personal statement. Bringing this idea of advocacy through sewing into the world of electronic textiles, I draw out opportunities for these two disparate approaches to craft can come together in the context of sex work research. To conclude this chapter, I highlight how participatory e-textiles making can help document, unravel, and advocate for changes in oppressive systems towards more socially just worlds.

In this chapter, I step away from reflecting on the process and instead point my attention directly to the outcome of the project: the artefact that is The Partnership Quilt. I present it, explain what it is made of, and draw on the meanings behinds its multiple physical and metaphoric layers. By describing the different materials and tools that were used to create the quilt, I reflect on how the artefact relates to histories of quilting and advocacy I described in Chap. 2, as well as how the stitches that were created in its process of making in Chap. 3 can tell us more about the care that is embedded in the artefact due to the attention to detail that was paid by all participants.

On the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers (IDEVASW), sex worker rights advocates and support services commemorate lives lost due to violence. In this paper we describe and reflect on a Feminist Participatory Action Research project that supported the activities of IDEVASW over two years in North East England. Working alongside a charity that provides services to women who are sex workers or have experienced sexual exploitation, we co-organised the first activist march on the day. As researchers and service providers, we present detailed reflections on the use of digital technologies during the public activist march, a private service for commemoration, and the development of a semi-public archive to collect experiences of the day. We develop three implications for the design of digital technologies for activism and the commemoration of lost lives: as catalysts for reflection and opportunities to layer experience.

HCI and design research has turned toward exploring methods, technologies, processes for societal impact, and do so by intervening in the real world and designing for, with and by people and existing citizen initiatives. A key issue faced is enabling efforts to continue beyond the project or grant timeline. For this reason, there is a growing need to create a forum where researchers and practitioners can share their approaches to shed light on opportunities and challenges of supporting lasting civic initiatives moving forward. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in how to make civic initiatives have lasting impact: either by supporting and sustaining such initiatives or by focusing on how their outcomes increase people's capacity to act on their ideas and wishes.

Using capacitive touch sensors and traditional quilting techniques lead to the collision of seemingly disparate worlds and resulted in the creation of the Partnership Quilt, a living archive of voices in the shape of an interactive piece of craftwork.

This paper provides analysis and insight from a collaborative process with a Canadian sex worker rights organization called Stella, l'amie de Maimie, where we reflect on the use of and potential for digital technologies in service delivery. We analyze the Bad Client and Aggressor List - a reporting tool co-produced by sex workers in the community and Stella staff to reduce violence against sex workers. We analyze its current and potential future formats as an artefact for communication, in a context of sex work criminalization and the exclusion of sex workers from traditional routes for reporting violence and accessing governmental systems for justice. This paper addresses a novel aspect of HCI research that relates to digital technologies and social justice. Reflecting on the Bad Client and Aggressor List, we discuss how technologies can interact with justice-oriented service delivery and develop three implications for design.

HCI has a growing body of work regarding important social and community issues, as well as various grassroots communities working to make CHI more international and inclusive. In this workshop, we will build on this work: first reflecting on the contemporary CHI climate, and then developing an actionable plan towards making CHI2019 and subsequent SIGCHI events and sister conferences more inclusive for all.

Feminist HCI has made a profound impact on perceptions of women's health, emancipation through design, as well as gender identity, inclusion, and diversity. However, there is a distinct lack of connection between these disparate but inherently connected research spaces. This SIG meeting aims to bring scholars together to discuss emerging and evolving issues of feminist research, and finding ways of using feminist theory and practice as a tool in future HCI research. Ultimately, the SIG will facilitate the engagement of a community of feminist HCI researchers, designers, and practitioners. It brings together those who may feel isolated in their respective research groups or universities to create a platform for feminist thought within SIGCHI and facilitate collaboration to proactively move towards the mainstreaming of feminism in HCI.

In this alt.chi paper, we reflect on #CHIversity a grassroots campaign highlighting feminist issues related to diversity and inclusion at CHI2017, and in HCI more widely. #CHIversity was operationalised through a number of activities including: collaborative cross-stitch and 'zine' making events; the development of a 'Feminist CHI Programme'; and the use of a Twitter hashtag #CHIversity. These events granted insight into how diversity discourses are approached within the CHI community. From these recognitions we provide examples of how diversity and inclusion can be promoted at future SIGCHI events. These include fostering connections between attendees, discussing 'polarizing' research in a conservative political climate, and encouraging contributions to the growing body of HCI literature addressing feminisms and related subjects. Finally, we suggest how these approaches and benefits can translate to HCI events extending beyond CHI, where exclusion may routinely go undetected.
