The northern Barents Sea is a cold, seasonally ice-covered Arctic shelf sea region that has experienced major warming and sea ice loss in recent decades. Here, a 2-year observational record from two ocean moorings provides new knowledge about the seasonal hydrographic variability in the region and about the ocean exchange across its northern margin. The combined records of temperature, salinity, and currents show the advection of warmer and saltier waters of Atlantic origin into the Barents Sea from the north. The source of these warmer water masses is the Atlantic Water boundary current that flows along the continental slope north of Svalbard. Time-varying southward inflow through cross-shelf troughs was the main driver of the seasonal cycle in ocean temperature at the moorings. Inflows were intensified in autumn and early winter, in some cases occurring below the sea ice cover and halocline water. On shorter timescales, subtidal current variability was correlated with the large-scale meridional atmospheric pressure gradient, suggesting wind-driven modulation of the inflow. The mooring records also show that import of sea ice into the Barents Sea has a lasting impact on the upper ocean, where salinity and stratification are strongly affected by the amount of sea ice that has melted in the area. A fresh layer separated the ocean surface from the warm mid-depth waters following large sea ice imports in 2019, whereas diluted Atlantic Water was found close to the surface during episodes in autumn 2018 following a long ice-free period. Thus, the advective imports of ocean water and sea ice from surrounding areas are both key drivers of ocean variability in the region.

Antarctic krill Euphausia superba, a keystone species in the Southern Ocean, is highly relevant for studying effects of climate-related shifts on management systems. Krill provides a key link between primary producers and higher trophic levels and supports the largest regional fishery. Any major perturbation in the krill population would have severe ecological and economic ramifications. We review the literature to determine how climate change, in concert with other environmental changes, alters krill habitat, affects spatial distribution/abundance, and impacts fisheries management. Findings recently reported on the effects of climate change on krill distribution and abundance are inconsistent, however, raising questions regarding methods used to detect changes in density and biomass. One recent study reported a sharp decline in krill densities near their northern limit, accompanied by a poleward contraction in distribution in the Southwest Atlantic sector. Another recent study found no evidence of long-term decline in krill density or biomass and reported no evidence of a poleward shift in distribution. Moreover, with predicted decreases in phytoplankton production, vertical foraging migrations to the seabed may become more frequent, also impacting krill production and harvesting. Potentially cumulative impacts of climate change further compound the management challenge faced by CCAMLR, the organization responsible for conservation of Antarctic marine living resources: to detect changes in the abundance, distribution, and reproductive performance of krill and krill-dependent predator stocks and to respond to such change by adjusting its conservation measures. Based on CCAMLR reports and documents, we review the institutional framework, outline how climate change has been addressed within this organization, and examine the prospects for further advances toward ecosystem risk assessment and an adaptive management system.

Marine ecosystems, and particularly fjords, are experiencing an increasing level of human activity on a yearround basis, including the poorly studied winter period. To improve the knowledge base for environmentally sustainable management in all seasons, this study provides hydrographic and biological baseline data for the sub-Arctic fjord Kaldfjorden, Northern Norway (69.7 N, 18.7 E), between autumn 2017 and spring 2018. Field observations are integrated with results of a numerical ocean model simulation, illustrating how pelagic biomass, represented by chlorophyll a (Chl a), particulate organic carbon (POC), and zooplankton, is affected by stratification and circulation from October to May. We observed an unusually warm autumn that likely delayed the onset of cooling and may have supported the high abundances of holoplankton and meroplankton (5768 individuals m–3). With the onset of winter, the water column cooled and became vertically mixed, while suspended Chl a concentrations declined rapidly (< 0.12 mg Chl a m–3). In January and February, suspended POC concentrations and downward flux were elevated near the seafloor. The hydrodynamic model results indicate that the strongest currents at depth occurred in these months, potentially inducing resuspension events close to the seafloor. In spring (April), peak abundances of suspended biomass were observed (6.9–7.2 mg Chl a m–3 at 5–15 m; 9952 zooplankton ind. m–3 at 0–100 m), and field observations and model results suggest that zooplankton of Atlantic origin were probably advected into Kaldfjorden. During all investigated seasons, the model simulation suggests a complex circulation pattern, even in such a small fjord, which can have implications for environmental management of the fjord. We conclude that the pelagic system in Kaldfjorden changes continually from autumn to spring and that winter must be seen as a dynamic period, not a season where the fjord ecosystem is ‘at rest’.

Sea ice concentration along the continental margin of the Arctic Ocean is influenced by a multitude of factors, including local freezing and melting due to atmospheric forcing, lateral advection of sea ice by winds and ocean currents, and melting from below by warm Atlantic Water (AW). Here, we characterize the evolution of sea ice concentration in an area on the continental shelf break north of Svalbard in the period between 2012 and 2019. During this period, a semi‐regular seasonal pattern in sea ice concentration was interrupted by three anomalous seasons; a high ice anomaly during autumn 2014 and low ice anomalies during spring 2016 and 2018. Neither type of anomaly can be explained by abnormal upper ocean heat content as measured by an ocean mooring located near the shelf break. Instead, we find that the predominant driver of interannual sea ice concentration variability during this period was variations in large‐scale ice drift. While heat flux from the ocean cannot explain the interannual variability, it plays a key role in maintaining periods of open water in the AW inflow region despite freezing air temperatures during most of the year. These results are consistent with the sea ice concentration flux divergence from satellite records, which suggests that the southern continental slope of the Eurasian Basin is an important melting area for sea ice advected in from the north.

The current research focus on the northern Barents Sea and the adjacent Nansen Basin has highlighted a need for common reference terms when discussing water mass origins and modification processes. Several relevant water mass definitions have been proposed and applied over the years, but these often focus either on water masses in the southern and central part of the Barents Sea, or on the deep interior Arctic Ocean. This report provides suggestions for quite broad water mass definitions that can be applied throughout this region – supplied by additional, more specific definitions as needed.

The attenuation coefficient b is one of the most common ways to describe how strong the carbon flux is attenuated throughout the water column. Therefore, b is an essential input variable in many carbon flux and climate models. Marsay et al. (2015, https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1415311112) proposed that the median surface water temperature (0–500 m) may be a predictor of b, but our observations from Arctic waters challenge this hypothesis. Scientific teaching cruises are a popular part of marine science courses in undergraduate and graduate education, but cruise time is under severe pressure due to financial and logistical constraints. In this study, we investigate the role of ship-based fieldwork in facilitating student learning in marine science education. In particular, we explore the contributions of different course components, such as lectures, seminars, and laboratory exercises, towards student learning in two undergraduate and one graduate course. Results from an online survey and interviews with students, teachers, and teaching assistants suggest that undergraduate students tend to learn most during the lectures and the cruise. Conversely, graduate students appear to learn most when conducting ship-based experiments and during the preparation of the cruise report. While the teaching cruise is probably a course component that is less focussed on transfer of knowledge in forms of facts and theories than e.g., lectures and seminars, they are effective for students to consolidate and to learn to apply their knowledge. In addition, the teaching cruise contributes considerably towards the development of practical and soft skills, such as group management and communication, which are highly valued by potential future employers. We therefore argue that teaching cruises provide a valuable teaching platform that goes beyond the mere dissemination of scientific content and train students in skills applicable to any future career.

Coastal oceans and shelf regions play a key role in marine productivity and represent an important part of the global carbon cycle, however due to strong seasonal and temporal dynamics, the processes controlling the biogeochemical cycling remain largely unresolved. This study presents the first time series measurements of hydrography, carbonate chemistry and macronutrients in a sub-Arctic fjord, Kaldfjorden (69.75 ºN, 18.68 ºE), of northern Norway during a full annual cycle. The influence of freshwater inputs and biological production were the dominant controls on fjord carbonate chemistry. Meteoric water freshened the upper layers during spring and summer, accounting for variability in surface water total alkalinity. Remineralisation of organic matter and deep mixing into carbon-rich subsurface water resupplied the water column with total inorganic carbon and macronutrients throughout the winter. Surface water saturation states (Ω) of aragonite were lowest 1.64 ± 0.04 during winter and early spring. Rapid CT drawdown in the spring phytoplankton blooms exhausted the winter stock of nitrate to drive high Ω of 2.26-2.33 and CO2 undersaturation (ΔfCO2(sea-air) was -58 ± 33 μatm) in the surface layer from April. Decreases in surface water alkalinity from July to October are consistent with coccolithophore blooms in the fjord. Kaldfjorden was estimated to be an annual net sink of atmospheric CO2. Climate change may intensify the natural variability in these important marine environments and gathering seasonal baseline data helps to unravel the contribution of fjords to oceanic CO2 cycling.

Sea ice concentration along the Arctic continental margin north of Svalbard is in decline, but superimposed on this trend is considerable interannual variability. Many factors impact sea ice in this region, including atmospheric cooling and heating, winds, sea ice advection, and oceanic heat transport associated with the inflow of Atlantic Water, and regional sea ice cover remains difficult to predict. We present observations of upper ocean temperature between 2012 and 2017 from an ocean mooring located on the continental shelf break north of the Barents Sea, together with concurrent time series of atmospheric variables and sea ice concentration, drift, and thickness, derived from satellite and reanalysis data. While the inflow of Atlantic Water undoubtedly plays a key role in maintaining the area north of Svalbard ice-free through much of the year, variations in upper ocean temperature do not explain major interannual sea ice anomalies during the study period. Instead, we find that the magnitude of sea ice advection from the north and east was a major driver of interannual sea ice variability during our study.

The shelf break north of Svalbard represents a major gateway for the inflow of nutrient-rich Atlantic Water (AW) to the Arctic Ocean. In this region, AW leaves the surface and subducts below Polar Surface Water (PSW). The supply of nutrients to the euphotic layer therefore varies strongly by season but also interannually, depending on e.g. rates of advection of sea ice and PSW over the AW boundary current. Additionally, the presence of sea ice can limit light availability in spring and early summer. Here, we present results from repeat sampling of hydrography, macronutrients (nitrate/nitrite, phosphate and silicic acid), and chlorophyll a along a transect at 31 E, 81.5 N in the period 2012-2017. Such time series are scarce but invaluable for investigating the range of variability in hydrography and nutrient concentrations. Measurements were done in late summer/early autumn, giving an indication of the nutrient consumption by primary producers over summer. The different years were characterised by very distinct sea ice conditions, both during the productive season and during the field campaigns. This impacted hydrography and primary production and thus nutrient concentrations in the surface and AW layers at the end of summer.

Source at https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-11-755-2017 In this paper we investigate the potential of melt pond fraction retrieval from X-band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on drifting first-year sea ice. Melt pond fractions retrieved from a helicopter-borne camera system were compared to polarimetric features extracted from four dual-polarimetric X-band SAR scenes, revealing significant relationships. The correlations were strongly dependent on wind speed and SAR incidence angle. Copolarisation ratio was found to be the most promising SAR feature for melt pond fraction estimation at intermediate wind speeds (6:2ms-1), with a Spearman’s correlation coefficient of 0:46. At low wind speeds (0:6ms-1), this relation disappeared due to low backscatter from the melt ponds, and backscatter VV-polarisation intensity had the strongest relationship to melt pond fraction with a correlation coefficient of -0:53. To further investigate these relations, regression fits were made both for the intermediate (R2fit D 0:21) and low (R2fit D 0:26) wind case, and the fits were tested on the satellite scenes in the study. The regression fits gave good estimates of mean melt pond fraction for the full satellite scenes, with less than 4% from a similar statistics derived from analysis of low-altitude imagery captured during helicopter ice-survey flights in the study area. A smoothing window of 51 51 pixels gave the best reproduction of the width of the melt pond fraction distribution. A considerable part of the backscatter signal was below the noise floor at SAR incidence angles above 40 , restricting the information gain from polarimetric features above this threshold. Compared to previous studies in C-band, limitations concerning wind speed and noise floor set stricter constraints on melt pond fraction retrieval in X-band. Despite this, our findings suggest new possibilities in melt pond fraction estimation from X-band SAR, opening for expanded monitoring of melt ponds during melt season in the future.

Data from a shipboard hydrographic/velocity survey carried out in September 2013 of the region north of Svalbard in the Nansen Basin are analyzed to characterize the Atlantic Water (AW) boundary current as it flows eastward along the continental slope. Eight meridional transects across the current, spanning an alongstream distance of 180 km, allow for a detailed description of the current and the regional water masses. During the survey the winds were light and there was no pack-ice. The mean section reveals that the boundary current was O(40 km) wide, surface-intensified, with a maximum velocity of 20 cm/s. Its mean transport during the survey was 3.11 ± 0.33 Sv, of which 2.31 ± 0.29 Sv was AW. This suggests that the two branches of AW entering the Arctic Ocean via Fram Strait—the Yermak Plateau branch and the Svalbard branch—have largely combined into a single current by 30°E. At this location the boundary current meanders with a systematic change in its kinematic structure during offshore excursions. A potential vorticity analysis indicates that the flow is baroclinically unstable, consistent with previous observations of AW anticyclones offshore of the current as well as the presence of a near-field cyclone in this data set. Our survey indicates that only a small portion of the boundary current is diverted into the Kvitoya Trough (0.17 ± 0.08 Sv) and that the AW temperature/salinity signal is quickly eroded within the trough.

In this study we investigate both historical and potential future changes in the spatial distribution of spawning habitats for Northeast Arctic Cod (NEA cod) based on a literature study on spawning habitats and different physical factors from a downscaled climate model. The approach to use a high resolution regional ocean model to analyze spawning sites is new and provides more details about crucial physical factors than a global low resolution model can. The model is evaluated with respect to temperature and salinity along the Norwegian coast during the last decades and shows acceptable agreement with observations. However, the model does not take into consideration biological or evolutionary factors which also have impact on choice of spawning sites. Our results from the downscaled RCP4.5 scenario suggest that the spawning sites will be shifted further northeastwards, with new locations at the Russian coast close to Murmansk over the next 50 years, where low temperatures for many decades in the last century were a limiting factor on spawning during spring. The regional model gives future temperatures above the chosen lower critical minimum value in larger areas than today and indicates that spawning will be more extensive there. Dependent on the chosen upper temperature boundary, future temperatures may become a limiting factor for spawning habitats at traditional spawning sites south of Lofoten. Finally, the observed long-term latitudinal shifts in spawning habitats along the Norwegian coast the recent decades may be indirectly linked to temperature through the latitudinal shift of the sea ice edge and the corresponding shift in available ice-free predation habitats, which control the average migration distance to the spawning sites. We therefore acknowledge that physical limitations for defining the spawning sites might be proxies for other biophysically related factors.

In this study, we investigate the potential of sea ice segmentation by C- and X-band multi-polarisation synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features during late summer. Five high-resolution satellite SAR scenes were recorded in the Fram Strait covering iceberg-fast first-year and old sea ice during a week with air temperatures varying around 0 °C. Sea ice thickness, surface roughness and aerial photographs were collected during a helicopter flight at the site. Six polarimetric SAR features were extracted for each of the scenes. The ability of the individual SAR features to discriminate between sea ice types and their temporal consistency were examined. All SAR features were found to add value to sea ice type discrimination. Relative kurtosis, geometric brightness, cross-polarisation ratio and co-polarisation correlation angle were found to be temporally consistent in the investigated period, while co-polarisation ratio and co-polarisation correlation magnitude were found to be temporally inconsistent. An automatic feature-based segmentation algorithm was tested both for a full SAR feature set and for a reduced SAR feature set limited to temporally consistent features. In C band, the algorithm produced a good late-summer sea ice segmentation, separating the scenes into segments that could be associated with different sea ice types in the next step. The X-band performance was slightly poorer. Excluding temporally inconsistent SAR features improved the segmentation in one of the X-band scenes.

We quantify Atlantic Water heat loss north of Svalbard using year‐long hydrographic and current records from three moorings deployed across the Svalbard Branch of the Atlantic Water boundary current in 2012–2013. The boundary current loses annually on average 16 W m−2 during the eastward propagation along the upper continental slope. The largest vertical fluxes of >100 W m−2 occur episodically in autumn and early winter. Episodes of sea ice imported from the north in November 2012 and February 2013 coincided with large ocean‐to‐ice heat fluxes, which effectively melted the ice and sustained open water conditions in the middle of the Arctic winter. Between March and early July 2013, a persistent ice cover‐modulated air‐sea fluxes. Melting sea ice at the start of the winter initiates a cold, up to 100‐m‐deep halocline separating the ice cover from the warm Atlantic Water. Semidiurnal tides dominate the energy over the upper part of the slope. The vertical tidal structure depends on stratification and varies seasonally, with the potential to contribute to vertical fluxes with shear‐driven mixing. Further processes impacting the heat budget include lateral heat loss due to mesoscale eddies, and modest and negligible contributions of Ekman pumping and shelf break upwelling, respectively. The continental slope north of Svalbard is a key example regarding the role of ocean heat for the sea ice cover. Our study underlines the complexity of the ocean's heat budget that is sensitive to the balance between oceanic heat advection, vertical fluxes, air‐sea interaction, and the sea ice cover.

We present sea-ice surface roughness estimates, i.e. the standard deviation of relative surface elevation, in the Arctic regions of Fram Strait and the Nansen Basin north of Svalbard acquired by an airborne laser scanner and a single-beam laser altimeter in 2010. We compare the scanner to the altimeter and compare the differences between the two survey regions. We estimate and correct sensor roll from the scanner data using the hyperbolic response of the scanner over a flat surface. Measurement surveys had to be longer than 5 km north of Svalbard and longer than 15 km in Fram Strait before the statistical distribution in surface roughness from the scanner and altimeter became similar. The shape of the surface roughness probability distributions agrees with those of airborne electromagnetic induction measurements of ice thickness. The ice in Fram Strait had a greater mean surface roughness, 0.16 m vs 0.09 m, and a wider distribution in roughness values than the ice in the Nansen Basin. An increase in surface roughness with increasing ice thickness was observed over fast ice found in Fram Strait near the coast of Greenland but not for the drift ice.

Comprehensive boundary layer measurements from a drift station on first-year ice in the late summer of 2012 in the Nansen basin, when stable stratification in the upper ocean extended all the way to the surface, are analyzed. Observed quadratic ice–ocean drag coefficients, based on measurements of wind stress, are roughly 3.6 × 10−3, consistent with neutral-stability Rossby similarity scaling. The turning angles of 32°–39° between surface velocity and stress are larger than Rossby similarity predicts and obey a different scaling. This can be explained by the shallow pycnocline forcing the Ekman transport into a thin layer and modeled roughly employing a simple first-order correction to Rossby similarity. Turbulent shear stress in the ice–ocean boundary layer is on average 3 times smaller than the estimate based on wind stress, possibly because internal wave drag was significant. This lowers vertical scalar fluxes by 38% compared to a scenario where turbulent stress accounts for the total drag. The authors measure an average upward ocean–ice heat flux of 10 W m−2, which is 50% smaller than predicted by a bulk heat flux parameterization. This reduction is attributed to additional sources of heat and freshwater that alter the ice–ocean interface salt balance. This study shows that a commonly used bulk heat flux parameterization is a special case of a simple downgradient parameterization allowing for a modified interface salt budget. For similar wind forcing, observed ice–ocean fluxes of heat and salt were 40%–100% larger when the ice-relative current approached from a nearby pressure ridge keel than otherwise.

The Arctic sea ice cover is rapidly shrinking, but a direct, longer-term assessment of the ice thinning remains challenging. A new time series constructed from in situ measurements of sea ice thickness at the end of the melt season in Fram Strait shows a thinning by over 50% during 2003-2012. The modal and mean ice thickness along 79 degrees N decreased at a rate of 0.3 and 0.2 m yr(-1), respectively, with long-term averages of 2.5 and 3 m. Airborne observations reveal an east-west thickness gradient across the strait in spring but not in summer due to advection from more different source regions. There is no clear relationship between interannual ice thickness variability and the source regions of the ice. The observed thinning is therefore likely a result of Arctic-wide reduction in ice thickness with a potential shift in exported ice types playing a minor role.

[1] Time series (1990–2011) of sea ice thickness observed by moored sonars in the Transpolar Drift in Fram Strait are examined. Contrasting the post-2007 years against the 1990s, three remarkable changes in the monthly ice thickness distributions are highlighted: (1) The thickness of old level ice (modal thickness) is reduced by 32%, (2) the old ice modal peak width is reduced by 25%, and (3) the fraction of (ridged) ice thicker than 5 m is reduced by 50%. The combined effect on the mean ice thickness is a reduction from an annual average of 3.0 m during the 1990s to 2.2 m during 2008–2011. Most of the thinning took place after 2005–2006. While the old ice modal thickness and peak width show signs of recovery after 2008, the decreasing trend in fraction of ridged ice and mean ice thickness persists until the end of the record in 2011. The ice observed in Fram Strait carries an integrated signal of Arctic change due to the advection of ice from many sites in the Arctic. Based on concurrence in timing, we conclude that much of the thinning quantified here is reflecting recent change in the age composition of the Arctic ice cover toward younger ice. The old level ice remains thin, and as such the ice cover remains preconditioned for new summers of very low sea ice extent.

We present a semi-automatic classification algorithm for processing of aerial photographs of sea ice in combination with total (sea ice plus snow) sea ice thickness measurements from a helicopter-borne electromagnetic induction device. The algorithm is based on discriminant analysis of spectral and textural features in normalised images using a training set and includes five ice classes. Supervision and optional additional training sets can be used to further reduce misclassifications. The photographs were taken simultaneously with the sea ice thickness measurements and the results from the classification and the thickness data have been merged for more detailed analysis. The algorithm was tested using two case studies from flights over the summer pack ice north of Svalbard and in Fram Strait. The observed ice thickness distribution was very similar in both regions but the results from the classified images revealed considerable differences. The sea ice cover north of Svalbard contained a high fraction of melt ponds and only very little thin or brash ice. In Fram Strait, however, with predominantly advected ice, the ice cover was subject to more ageing and deterioration and included significantly higher fractions of brash ice and submerged ice. The results from the algorithm in combination with the ice thickness provide new information about the state of the observed sea ice and the relationship of present ice types to ice thickness.

[1] During an 8 day drift in July–August 2012 in the Nansen Basin, all components of the energy budget of melting first-year sea ice were observed. Absorption of solar radiation by the ice and ponds was the largest source of energy to the ice at almost all times during the drift. However, oceanic heat flux also provided significant heating and dominated during one wind event. Longwave fluxes provided a relatively small cooling effect, and atmospheric heat fluxes were negligible. The aggregate scale albedo of this younger, thinner ice was significantly lower than at Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA), and the transmittance was significantly higher here, despite similar pond and open water fractions. The oceanic heat flux was only half of the solar flux through the ice to the water, producing warm water near the surface that might delay ice growth in autumn, an important effect of the transition to thinner first-year ice in the high Arctic.

Ocean models require subgrid-scale parametrizations of vertical mixing expressed in terms of a quantity that is easily diagnosable from model output, such as the Richardson number. To date parametrizing mixing for low (

Rijpfjorden (808 N, 22° E) is a high-Arctic fjord on Nordaustlandet in the Svalbard archipelago. To monitor the thermodynamic change of sea ice in spring, an ice mass-balance buoy (IMB) was deployed for 2.5 months (10 April–26 June 2011), with accompanying in situ measurements, sea-ice sampling on three occasions and ice-core analysis. Uncertainties and sources of error in in situ measurements and IMB data are discussed. The in situ measurements, ice-core analysis and IMB data together depict the development of snow and ice in spring. Snow and ice thickness exhibited large spatial and temporal variability. After relatively stable conditions with only little change in ice thickness and accumulation of snow, a layer of superimposed ice ∼0.06 m thick formed at the snow-ice interface due to refreezing of snow meltwater in late spring. Ice thickness (except for growth of superimposed ice) did not change significantly based on in situ observations. In contrast, the under-ice sonar data from the IMB show reflections from a layer deeper than the underside of the ice during the melting phase. This can be explained as a reflection of the sonar pulses from an interface between a freshwater layer under the ice and more saline water below, or as a false-bottom formation.

Variability of sea-ice and snow conditions on the scale of a few hundred meters is examined using in situ measurements collected in first-year pack ice in the European Arctic north of Svalbard. Snow thickness and surface elevation measurements were performed in the standard manner using a snow stick and a rotating laser. Altogether, 4109 m of measurement lines were surveyed. The snow loading was large, and in many locations the ice freeboard was negative (38.8% of snowline measurements), although the modal ice and snow thickness was 1.8 m. The mean of all the snow thickness measurements was 36 cm, with a standard deviation of 26 cm. The mean freeboard was only 3 cm, with a standard deviation of 23 cm. There were noticeable differences in snow thickness among the measurement sites. Over the undeformed ice areas, the mean snow thickness and freeboard were 23 and 2.4 cm, respectively. Over the ridged ice areas, the mean freeboard was only –0.3 cm due to snow accumulation on the sails of ridges (average thickness 54 cm). These findings imply that retrieval algorithms for converting freeboard to ice thickness should take account of spatial variability of snow cover.

The large-scale thickness distribution of sea ice was measured during several campaigns in the European Arctic north of Svalbard from 2007 using an airborne electromagnetic induction device. In August 2010 and April-May 2011, this was complemented by extensive on-ice work including measurements of snow thickness and freeboard. Ice thicknesses show a clear difference between the seasons, with thicker ice during spring than in summer. In spring 2011, negative freeboard and flooding were observed as a result of the extensive snow cover. We find that the characteristics of the first-year sea ice allow combining observations from different years. The ice thickness in the marginal ice zone increases with increasing latitude and increasing distance to the ice edge; however, in the inner ice pack from ∼100 km from the ice edge the thickness remains almost constant. Modal ice thickness in spring reaches 2.4 m whereas in summer it is 1.0–1.4 m. Our study provides new insight into ice thickness distributions of a typical ice cover consisting of mainly first- and second-year ice, which may become the dominant ice type in the Arctic in the future.

International audience; Understanding and responding to the rapidly occurring environmental changes in the Arctic over the past few decades require new approaches in science. This includes improved collaborations within the scientific community but also enhanced dialogue between scientists and societal stakeholders, especially with Arctic communities. As a contribution to the Third International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP III), the Arctic in Rapid Transition (ART) network held an international workshop in France, in October 2014, in order to discuss high-priority requirements for future Arctic marine and coastal research from an early-career scientists (ECS) perspective. The discussion encompassed a variety of research fields, including topics of oceanographic conditions, sea-ice monitoring, marine biodiversity, land-ocean interactions, and geological reconstructions, as well as law and governance issues. Participants of the workshop strongly agreed on the need to enhance interdisciplinarity in order to collect comprehensive knowledge about the modern and past Arctic Ocean’s geo-ecological dynamics. Such knowledge enables improved predictions of Arctic developments and provides the basis for elaborate decision-making on future actions under plausible environmental and climate scenarios in the high northern latitudes. Priority research sheets resulting from the workshop’s discussions were distributed during the ICARPIII meetings in April 2015 in Japan, and are publicly available online.

Pathways and rates of ocean flow near the Antarctic Peninsula are strongly affected by frontal features, forcings from the atmosphere and the cryosphere. In the surface mixed layer, the currents advect material from the northwestern Weddell Sea on the eastern side of the Peninsula around the tip of the Peninsula to its western side and into the Scotia Sea, connecting populations of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and supporting the ecosystem of the region. Modelling of subsurface drifters using a particle tracking algorithm forced by the velocity fields of a coupled sea ice-ocean model (ORCA025-LIM2) allows analysis of the seasonal and interannual variability of drifter pathways over 43 years. The results show robust and persistent connections from the Weddell Sea both to the west into the Bellingshausen Sea and across the Scotia Sea towards South Georgia, reproducing well the observations. The fate of the drifters is sensitive to their deployment location, in addition to other factors. From the shelf of the eastern Antarctic Peninsula, the majority enter the Bransfield Strait and subsequently the Bellingshausen Sea. When originating further offshore over the deeper Weddell Sea, drifters are more likely to cross the South Scotia Ridge and reach South Georgia. However, the wind field east and southeast of Elephant Island, close to the tip of the Peninsula, is crucial for the drifter trajectories and is highly influenced by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). Increased advection and short travel times to South Georgia, and reduced advection to the western Antarctic Peninsula can be linked to strong westerlies, a signature of the positive phase of the SAM. The converse is true for the negative phase. Strong westerlies and shifts of ocean fronts near the tip of the Peninsula that are potentially associated with both the SAM and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation restrict the connection from the Weddell Sea to the west, and drifters then predominantly follow the open paths to South Georgia and the east. Over the 43-year time series, the number of drifters advected into the Bellingshausen Sea decreases significantly by 23% and the travel time to South Georgia shortens significantly by 19% which corresponds to 56 days. We propose that these trends are linked, at least in part, to the increasingly positive trend in the SAM and, as such, this suggests an additional anthropogenic source of change to the regional ecosystem.

An array of 40 surface drifters, drogued at 15-m depth, was deployed in February 2007 to the east of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula as part of the Antarctic Drifter Experiment: Links to Isobaths and Ecosystems (ADELIE) project. Data obtained from these drifters and from a select number of local historical drifters provide the most detailed observations to date of the surface circulation in the northwestern Weddell Sea. The Antarctic Slope Front (ASF), characterized by a ∼20 cm s−1 current following the 1000-m isobath, is the dominant feature east of the peninsula. The slope front bifurcates when it encounters the South Scotia Ridge with the drifters following one of three paths. Drifters (i) are carried westward into Bransfield Strait; (ii) follow the 1000-m isobath to the east along the southern edge of the South Scotia Ridge; or (iii) become entrained in a large-standing eddy over the South Scotia Ridge. Drifters are strongly steered by contours of f /h (Coriolis frequency/depth) as shown by calculations of the first two moments of displacement in both geographic coordinates and coordinates locally aligned with contours of f /h. An eddy-mean decomposition of the drifter velocities indicates that shear in the mean flow makes the dominant contribution to dispersion in the along-f /h direction, but eddy processes are more important in dispersing particles across contours of f /h. The results of the ADELIE study suggest that the circulation near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula may influence ecosystem dynamics in the Southern Ocean through Antarctic krill transport and the export of nutrients.

We present a validation of three global z-level eddy-permitting/resolving ocean general circulation models against hydrographic observations and remote sensing sea ice data from the Weddell Sea. The Weddell Sea is a region in which complex processes such as water mass formation, sea ice formation and melt, and circulation under ice shelves take place. The representation of these processes is challenging even for the current generation of eddy-permitting ocean models. Simulating the hydrographic structure of this basin is a stringent test for models, notably so when considering the global influence of the regional processes. The performance of OCCAM (at two resolutions), ORCA025 and TPAC are tested regarding water mass properties, sea ice seasonality (OCCAM and ORCA025 only) and volume transport. OCCAM simulates the deep water masses reasonably well in both resolutions. The eddy-resolving run is not significantly better than the eddy-permitting simulation. ORCA025 and TPAC represent the surface layers and the Weddell Gyre circulation better but are generally too warm throughout the water column. All models underestimate Weddell Sea Bottom Water formation. Both OCCAM and ORCA025 struggle to correctly model the sea ice cover: OCCAM overestimates the summer ice extent while little multi-year sea ice remains in ORCA025. TPAC exhibits considerable drift in potential temperature during the model run. The choice of a model for a study has to be made carefully taking into account the model's performance in the specific area, application and variable of interest. We identify several starting points for improving the models, namely model numerics and parameterisations of subgridscale processes, ensuring more accurate forcing datasets, correct initialisation, and ice-ocean interactions, all of which are likely to have larger benefits than simply increasing the horizontal resolution beyond eddy permitting. Sea-ice thickness is a key parameter for estimates of salt fluxes to the ocean and the contribution to global thermohaline circulation. Observations of sea-ice thickness in the Southern Ocean are sparse and difficult to collect. An exception to this data gap is time-series data from upward-looking sonars (ULS) which sample the drifting sea ice continuously. In this study we use ULS data from ten different locations over periods ranging from 9 to 25 months to compare with model data. Although these data are limited in space and time, they provide a qualitative indication of the ability of global climate models (GCMs) to adequately represent Southern Ocean sea ice. We compare the ULS data to output from four different GCMs (BCCR-BCM2.0, ECHAM5/MPI-OM, UKMO-HadCM3 and NCAR CCSM3) which were used for the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. They simulate the ice thickness reasonably well, but in most cases average model ice thickness is less than thicknesses derived from ULS data. The seasonal cycle produced by the models correlates well with the ULS except for locations near Maud Rise, where in summer the ULS find a low concentration of thick ice floes. This overly thin ice will have implications for both the salt flux to the central Weddell Sea during the growth season and the freshwater flux during the melt season. Using satellite-derived ice-drift data to calculate transports in the Weddell Sea, we find that the underestimation of ice thickness results in underestimated salt fluxes.

In this study we examine the relationship between sea ice melt pond fraction and two polarimetric C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features. Three high-resolution SAR scenes were recorded in the Fram Strait in late summer 2011, covering iceberg-fast first-year and old sea ice. In addition, melt pond fraction was retrieved from photographs recorded during a helicopter flight at the study area. Co-polarisation ratio and relative kurtosis were extracted from the SAR scenes and compared to the retrieved melt pond fraction. A correlation between relative kurtosis and melt pond fraction was found in all scenes. Co-polarisation ratio was correlated to melt pond fraction in one of the scenes. Refreezing of the melt ponds could explain the lack of correlation in the two other scenes. Our results demonstrate a potential of high resolution C-band SAR for retrieval of melt pond fraction, a valuable parameter in climate model parametrization and climate studies.

The paper presents a case study of the regional (≈150 km) morphological and optical properties of a relatively thin, 70–90 cm modal thickness, first-year Arctic sea ice pack in an advanced stage of melt. The study combines in situ broadband albedo measurements representative of the four main surface types (bare ice, dark melt ponds, bright melt ponds and open water) and images acquired by a helicopter-borne camera system during ice-survey flights. The data were collected during the 8-day ICE12 drift experiment carried out by the Norwegian Polar Institute in the Arctic, north of Svalbard at 82.3° N, from 26 July to 3 August 2012. A set of > 10 000 classified images covering about 28 km2 revealed a homogeneous melt across the study area with melt-pond coverage of ≈ 0.29 and open-water fraction of ≈ 0.11. A decrease in pond fractions observed in the 30 km marginal ice zone (MIZ) occurred in parallel with an increase in open-water coverage. The moving block bootstrap technique applied to sequences of classified sea-ice images and albedo of the four surface types yielded a regional albedo estimate of 0.37 (0.35; 0.40) and regional sea-ice albedo of 0.44 (0.42; 0.46). Random sampling from the set of classified images allowed assessment of the aggregate scale of at least 0.7 km2 for the study area. For the current setup configuration it implies a minimum set of 300 images to process in order to gain adequate statistics on the state of the ice cover. Variance analysis also emphasized the importance of longer series of in situ albedo measurements conducted for each surface type when performing regional upscaling. The uncertainty in the mean estimates of surface type albedo from in situ measurements contributed up to 95% of the variance of the estimated regional albedo, with the remaining variance resulting from the spatial inhomogeneity of sea-ice cover.

This paper investigates automatic segmentation and classification of C-band, polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite images of Arctic sea ice under freezing conditions prior to melt. The objective is to investigate the robustness of the results obtained under slightly varying environmental conditions and different viewing geometries. Initially, three geographically overlapping SAR images from consecutive days are incidence-angle corrected and segmented into unknown classes. The segmentation is performed by an unsupervised mixture-of-Gaussian segmentation algorithm utilizing six features extracted from the polarimetric data. After segmentation, the segments are contextually smoothed. One segmented image is manually labelled based on in situ data and expert knowledge. Using this scene as reference, we consider two strategies for class labelling of the other scenes. The first manually labels the classes based on visual inspection of the reference; the second utilizes various statistical distance measures to automatically assign each unknown class to the statistically nearest reference class. These two scenes are also classified pixel-wise by a supervised classification algorithm based on the reference data. Poor classification results are obtained when the incidence angle is very different from the reference scene. Similar viewing geometries reveal good classification and labelling results, the latter regardless of the distance measure used.

The Virtual Poster Session (VPS), developed by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), is an open access online tool for publishing conference posters and discussing the research presented through posters outside the traditional conference environment. Instead of having posters collect dust or confining them to an archive on a computer’s hard drive after they were presented at a conference, they can be uploaded and displayed on the APECS website, with each poster having a unique webpage link. There, they can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection, and others can comment and contact the author. Additional monthly online seminars give the authors of these posters the opportunity to present their research live to an international and interdisciplinary audience and respond to questions and feedback. In these sessions, scientists can hone their presentation and discussion skills in a friendly and informal setting as well as publicize their research even further. Currently, over 200 posters by authors and co-authors from 34 countries are accessible through the APECS website (http://www.apecs.is/virtual-poster-session). Over 30 of these posters have been presented in live Virtual Poster Sessions to date, centered on themes such as research areas, countries, and post-meeting round-ups. The audience during the calls included early career and senior scientists, educators, journalists and others. The calls provide useful opportunities to talk to an international and interdisciplinary audience irrespective of location or funding situation. Online tools such as the VPS create ways to open up new collaborations to discuss research ideas, and to share results and methodologies outside the restrictions of national, financial, and disciplinary boundaries.

During two consecutive cruises to the Eastern Central Arctic in late summer 2012, we observed floating algal aggregates in the melt-water layer below and between melting ice floes of first-year pack ice. The macroscopic (1 – 15 cm in diameter) aggregates had a mucous consistency and were dominated by typical ice-associated pennate diatoms embedded within the mucous matrix. Aggregates maintained buoyancy and accumulated just above a strong pycnocline that separated meltwater and seawater layers. We were able, for the first time, to obtain quantitative abundance and biomass estimates of these aggregates. Although their biomass and production on a square metre basis was small compared to ice-algal blooms, the floating ice-algal aggregates supported high levels of biological activity on the scale of the individual aggregate. In addition they constituted a food source for the ice-associated fauna as revealed by pigments indicative of zooplankton grazing, high abundance of naked ciliates, and ice amphipods associated with them. During the Arctic melt season, these floating aggregates likely play an important ecological role in an otherwise impoverished near-surface sea ice environment. Our findings provide important observations and measurements of a unique aggregate-based habitat during the 2012 record sea ice minimum year.

This number was determined in advance from visual inspection of the SAR image and by available in-situ measurements. The segmentation result was then compared to ice charts drawn by ice service analysts. The comparison revealed big discrepancies between the charts of the analysts, and between the manual and the automatic segmentations. In the succeeding analysis, the automatic segmentation chart was labeled into ice types by sea ice experts, and the SAR features used in the segmentation were interpreted in terms of physical sea ice properties. Studies of automatic and robust estimation of the number of ice classes in SAR sea ice scenes will be highly relevant for future work.

We present observations of high-frequency current variability on the continental shelf and the slope of the Antarctic Peninsula using Lagrangian surface drifters deployed as part of the Antarctic Drifter Experiment: Links to Isobaths and Ecosystems (ADELIE) project. Here we focus on high-frequency processes such as tides and inertial oscillations that are typically smoothed out of large-scale spatially averaged, and/or temporally averaged, observed current fields. We investigate the role that this class of motion plays in the transport of physical or biogeochemical properties. Lateral displacements on the shelf and slope are found to be larger than displacements in deeper waters where tidal currents are negligible. We apply this result in a parameterization of the lateral dispersion during an off-line drifter modeling study. The outcome is an improvement on the modeling of Lagrangian drifting particles compared with a standard random walk scheme.

[1] Seasonal fast ice thickness at the island of Hopen (Barents Sea) was monitored over 40 years. Sea ice thickness variability as a climate indicator provides more quantitative information on the state of the ice cover than solely sea ice extent. Usually, starting to form just before December Hopen fast ice reaches maximum thickness in May (on average 0.99 m), before the ice starts to decay. Swell, currents, and winds interrupt the fast ice development at Hopen during several of the winters observed, leading to ice removal and new ice formation. Since 2000, no ice thicker than 1.0 m was observed. We find a trend in the ice thickness anomalies of −0.11 m per decade, coinciding with decreasing seasonal maximum ice thickness, and an increase in local surface air and water temperatures. This is consistent with the decreasing sea ice extent in the Barents Sea and the entire Arctic.

A sea-ice mass-balance monitoring study including ice extent and thickness observations was started at Kongsfjorden (79˚N, 12˚E), Svalbard, in 2003. The inner part of Kongsfjorden is usually covered by seasonal fast ice 2) were calculated for 2003–05. By combining extent with thickness data, ice-mass time series were calculated. As also observed earlier than 2003 in other studies, the fast ice varies interannually in extent and thickness. Among the factors which control the fast-ice evolution are physical and meteorological parameters, and the geographical setting of Kongsfjorden, with its coastline and a group of islands in its inner part having a protective effect. This study is ongoing and a major aim is to identify and quantify connections between the Kongsfjorden fast-ice evolution and climate parameters.
