Abstract

Sterilization is essential for discriminating biotic responses from abiotic reactions in laboratory experiments investigating biogeochemical processes of complex natural samples. However, the conventional methods used to effectively sterilize materials or culture media do not allow sterilizing complex natural samples while maintaining biogeochemical balances. The aim of this study was to develop a low-cost and easy-to-use method to obtain geochemically unmodified and sterilized samples from complex lacustrine or coastal marine ecosystems. In preliminary assays, the impact of several sterilization methods (autoclaving, chemical poisoning, microwave, UV irradiation) on the trace metals balances was studied using borosilicate glass (BG), fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. Unlike other methods, UV sterilization had minor effects on the distribution of dissolved trace metals. Additional tests using complex lacustrine and coastal marine samples under 10 g/L sediments were performed using a homemade UV sterilization chamber designed to simultaneously irradiate a large number samples. Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; L’action III.1 du programme OSR 4 vise à estimer les flux de MES et de contaminants associés sur le Rhône et ses principaux affluents. Pour répondre à cet objectif, un réseau de mesure en continu des concentrations en MES et de prélèvements de MES a été mis en place. Ce document décrit les interventions et les mesures réalisées sur le réseau d’observation des flux particulaires de l’OSR pour l’année 2016 (OSR 4). Il présente également l’avancement de la bancarisation des données issues de ce suivi dans la base BDOH/OSR (flux). L’année 2016 a été marquée par la mise en place d’une nouvelle station sur l’Ardèche et par le suivi de l’opération d’abaissement partiel du barrage de Verbois (APAVER) sur le Rhône amont. L’outil BDOH, qui permettait jusqu’alors de gérer uniquement des données quantifiées, dispose désormais d’une nouvelle fonctionnalité pour la bancarisation de données reconstituées et inférieures aux limites de quantification.

Abstract

L'action III.1 du programme OSR 4 vise à estimer les flux de matières en suspension (MES) et de contaminants associés sur le Rhône et ses principaux affluents. Pour répondre à cet objectif, un réseau de mesure en continu des concentrations en MES et de prélèvements de MES a été mis en place. Ce document décrit les interventions et les mesures réalisées sur le réseau d'observation des flux particulaires de l'OSR pour l'année 2017 (OSR 4). Il présente également l'avancement de la bancarisation des données issues de ce suivi dans la base de données BDOH/OSR (flux). L'année 2017 a été marquée par la mise en place d'une nouvelle station sédimentaire sur le Gardon à Remoulins. Dans BDOH, les chroniques de concentrations en contaminants comportant des lacunes ont été reconstituées à l'aide de forfaits déterminés par gamme de débits.

Abstract

[Departement_IRSTEA]Eaux [TR1_IRSTEA]ARCEAU; Ce document décrit les interventions et les mesures réalisées sur le suivi du réseau de stations de mesure des flux en continu de l’Observatoire des Sédiments du Rhône pour les années 2013 et 2014 (OSR3). Pour le Haut-Rhône, l’ensemble des prélèvements a été réalisé par Irstea de façon conforme aux prévisions, de même que la plupart des analyses chimiques. Pour le Bas-Rhône, l'ensemble des prélèvements a été réalisé par le MIO et le CEREGE comme prévu par le contrat. Les analyses métaux de 2013 sont complètes pour Arles ; pour Jons 9 mois sur 12 sont analysés et les autres seront réalisées prochainement. Il présente également l’avancement de la bancarisation dans BDOH/OSR (flux) des données issues de ce suivi dans et détaille la stratégie adoptée pour transmettre ces données à l’Agence de l’eau RMC dans le format souhaité.

Abstract

Mutations in the OA1 gene cause ocular albinism type 1 (OA1), an X-linked form of albinism affecting only the eye, with skin pigmentation appearing normal. To better understand the pathogenesis of this disease the time of onset and the pattern of expression of the mouse homolog of the OA1 gene were monitored during eye development. The localization of Oa1 mRNA was studied and compared with the expression of other genes involved in melanosomal biogenesis.The Oa1 expression pattern during eye development and after birth was analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and in situ hybridization. Localization of Oa1 mRNA was compared with TYROSINASE: (TYR:), pink-eyed dilution (p), and Pax2 expression patterns.RT-PCR revealed that Oa1 expression began at embryonic day (E)10.5 and was maintained until adulthood. By in situ hybridization analysis Oa1 transcripts were detected in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) beginning at E10.5 in the dorsal part of the eyecup and in the same area where transcripts of other genes involved in pigmentation are found. Of note, the expression pattern of these genes was complementary to Pax2 expression, which was restricted to the ventral side of the optic cup. At later stages, expression of Oa1, TYR:, and p expanded to the entire RPE and ciliary body.Oa1 expression can be detected at early stages of RPE development, together with other genes involved in pigmentation defects. Oa1 is likely to play an important function in melanosomal biogenesis in the RPE beginning during the earliest steps of melanosome formation.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to constrain the Late Quaternary activity of two major dextral strike-slip faults of the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt of Southern Iran, within the framework of right-oblique convergence between Arabia and Eurasia. The NW-trending Main Recent fault marks the rear of the belt along two thirds of its length. Its southeastern tip connects to the northern termination of the N-trending Kazerun Fault, which affects the entire width of the belt. Horizontal slip rates have been estimated on these two faults over the last 140 ka from lateral offsets of streams and fans and in situ cosmogenic Cl-36 exposure dating of cobbles sampled on the surface of these geomorphic features. Compared to GPS data, the obtained minimum slip rate of 3.5-12.5 mm yr(-1) on the Main Recent Fault implies strike-slip partitioning of the convergence along this fault. Minimum slip rate of the Kazerun Fault is 2.5-4 mm yr(-1) for its northern strand, 1.5-3.5 mm yr(-1) for its central segment and is negligible for its southern segment. These results are consistent with southward distribution of the slip from along the Main Recent Fault to the longitudinal thrusts and folds of the fold-and-thrust belt through the Kazerun Fault, with a decrease of slip from the southeastern tip of the Main Recent Fault towards the southern termination of the Kazerun Fault. The Kazerun and associated faults form the horsetail termination of the Main Recent fault and may be seen as the propagating southeastern front of the fault system that accommodates indentation of Eurasia by Arabia.

Abstract

Fusion energy has the potential to provide sustainable solutions to global energy needs for the next generations. However, despite decades of intense international efforts many scientific and technological breakthroughs need to be achieved before fusion become available and economically viable. In addition, and prior to industrial development of the fusion technology, it is worth addressing possible negative environmental and health impacts. For instance, the interactions between the plasma and refractory materials called plasma facing components (PFC) like tungsten, will generate tritiated dust. The aim of the study is to address the fate in water and biological media of W nanoparticles that might be released in case of Lost Of Vacuum Accident (LOVA). The dilution of particles in TRIS, LHC9 and pulmonary media did not strongly affect the average size of the particles while the dilution in Saline medium lead to substantial aggregation. The results proved that oxidative dissolution of W nanoparticles occurred in several aqueous/biological media (TRIS, LHC9 and Lung media) with increasing time. From the different dissolution rates as a function of the tested media, it seems that the oxidative dissolutions are rate limited by diffusion in the oxidized layer surrounding the metallic core of particles. The mechanisms of dissolution involved $\mathrm{W}^{4+}$ and $\mathrm{W}^{6+}$ corroded layers prior to $\mathrm{W}^{6+}$ dissolution. Knowledge provided by these dispersion–dissolution experiments helped to determine the environmental mobility and persistence as well as the bio-durability of these tungsten nanoparticles. As dissolution has potential to influence the toxicity of particles, it is a crucial parameter to consider in the risk assessment of particles.

Abstract

The influence of membrane filtration modes on the estimation of size distribution for natural elements in water was investigated. The stepwise membrane filtration is used to distinguish different size fractions including large particulate (>18 μm), particulate (0.2–18 μm), colloidal/nanoparticle (10 kDa–0.2 μm), and truly dissolved fractions (<10 kDa) in river water samples and wastewater treatment plants effluents. Dead-end and tangential flow filtrations were compared during fractionation process. For most elements, concentrations in different size fractions obtained by two filtration modes were generally similar. The obvious difference was only found in acid fractions for some elements, which might be related to the cake grown at membrane surfaces between two filtration modes. In case of elemental partitioning, the influence of filtration modes was normally negligible, when the membranes used and operational factors were exactly the same. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The colloidal and chemical stability of CeO2nanoparticles used in a diesel additive (viz.Envirox™) was studied at different stages of their lifecycle (formulation, use, end of life). After combustion at a temperature close to that of diesel engines, the size of the CeO2crystallites increased significantly without detectable Ce(iii) in the structure and remaining organic compounds at the surface. Regardless of the aging conditions (salinity, light, pH), the dissolution kinetics of the combusted particles were slowed down compared to that of the initial CeO2nanoparticles. After 2 days at 0.1 g L−1of salts, no more than 0.01% of the total Ce was released from the 850 °C-combusted Envirox™ versus1.5% for the uncombusted Envirox™. Both the crystal growth during combustion and the degradation of the organic matrix will govern the aggregation and dissolution kinetics/mechanisms once the CeO2particles are released into the environment at different stages of their lifecycle. Such a study is a prerequisite needed before any assessment of the environmental risks of CeO2nanoparticle-based diesel additives is performed.

Abstract

Indoor aquatic mesocosms were designed to mimic pond ecosystems contaminated by a continuous point-source discharge of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs). Bare and citrate-coated CeO2-NPs exhibited different chemical and colloidal behaviors in the aquatic mesocosms. Bare CeO2-NPs were chemically stable but quickly homo-aggregated and settled out of the water column. Citrate-coated NPs both homo- and hetero-aggregated but only after the several days required to degrade the citrate coating. While they were more stable as a colloidal suspension, coated CeO2-NPs dissolved faster due to surface complexation with citrate, which resulted in the release of dissolved Ce into the water column. The different distributions over time between water/sediment or dissolved/particulate forms of Ce controlled the availability of Ce to benthic grazers (mollusk Planorbarius corneus) and planktonic filter feeders (copepod Eudiaptomus vulgaris).
