Background: Electromagnetic forces in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coils generate a loud clicking sound that produces confounding auditory activation and is potentially hazardous to hearing. To reduce this noise while maintaining stimulation efficiency similar to conventional TMS coils, we previously developed a quiet TMS double containment coil (qTMS-DCC). Objective: To compare the stimulation strength, perceived loudness, and EEG response between qTMS-DCC and a commercial TMS coil. Methods: Nine healthy volunteers participated in a within-subject study design. The resting motor thresholds (RMTs) for qTMS-DCC and MagVenture Cool-B65 were measured. Psychoacoustic titration matched the Cool-B65 loudness to qTMS-DCC pulsed at 80, 100, and 120 % RMT. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded for both coils. The psychoacoustic titration and ERPs were acquired with the coils both on and 6 cm off the scalp, the latter isolating the effects of airborne auditory stimulation from body sound and electromagnetic stimulation. The ERP comparisons focused on a centro-frontal region that encompassed peak responses in the global signal while stimulating the primary motor cortex. Results: RMT did not differ significantly between the coils, with or without the EEG cap on the head. qTMS-DCC was perceived to be substantially quieter than Cool-B65. For example, qTMS-DCC at 100 % coil-specific RMT sounded like Cool-B65 at 34 % RMT. The general ERP waveform and topography were similar between the two coils, as were early-latency components, indicating comparable electromagnetic brain stimulation in the on-scalp condition. qTMS- DCC had a significantly smaller P180 component in both on-scalp and off-scalp conditions, supporting reduced auditory activation. Conclusions: The stimulation efficiency of qTMS-DCC matched Cool-B65 while having substantially lower perceived loudness and auditory-evoked potentials.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders with broad potential for new applications, but the neural circuits that are engaged during TMS are still poorly understood. Recordings of neural activity from the corticospinal tract provide a direct readout of the response of motor cortex to TMS, and therefore a new opportunity to model neural circuit dynamics. The study goal was to use epidural recordings from the cervical spine of human subjects to develop a computational model of a motor cortical macrocolumn through which the mechanisms underlying the response to TMS, including direct and indirect waves, could be investigated. An in-depth sensitivity analysis was conducted to identify important pathways, and machine learning was used to identify common circuit features among these pathways. Sensitivity analysis identified neuron types that preferentially contributed to single corticospinal waves. Single wave preference could be predicted using the average connection probability of all possible paths between the activated neuron type and L5 pyramidal tract neurons (PTNs). For these activations, the total conduction delay of the shortest path to L5 PTNs determined the latency of the corticospinal wave. Finally, there were multiple neuron type activations that could preferentially modulate a particular corticospinal wave. The results support the hypothesis that different pathways of circuit activation contribute to different corticospinal waves with participation of both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. Moreover, activation of both afferents to the motor cortex as well as specific neuron types within the motor cortex initiated different I-waves, and the results were interpreted to propose the cortical origins of afferents that may give rise to certain I-waves. The methodology provides a workflow for performing computationally tractable sensitivity analyses on complex models and relating the results to the network structure to both identify and understand mechanisms underlying the response to acute stimulation.

In the SARS-CoV-2 lineage, RNA elements essential for its viral life cycle, including genome replication and gene expression, have been identified. Still, the precise structures and functions of these RNA regions in coronaviruses remain poorly understood. This lack of knowledge points out the need for further research to better understand these crucial aspects of viral biology and, in time, prepare for future outbreaks. In this research, the in silico analysis of the cis RNA structures that act in the alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and deltacoronavirus genera has provided a detailed view of the presence and adaptation of the structures of these elements in coronaviruses. The results emphasize the importance of these cis elements in viral biology and their variability between different viral variants. Some coronavirus variants in some groups, depending on the cis element (stem-loop1 and -2; pseudoknot stem-loop1 and -2, and s2m), exhibited functional adaptation. Additionally, the conformation flexibility of the s2m element in the SARS variants was determined, suggesting a coevolution of this element in this viral group. The variability in secondary structures suggests genomic adaptations that may be related to replication processes, genetic regulation, as well as the specific pathogenicity of each variant. The results suggest that RNA structures in coronaviruses can adapt and evolve toward different viral variants, which has important implications for viral adaptation, pathogenicity, and future therapeutic strategies.

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation modality that can alter cortical excitability. However, it remains unclear how the subcellular elements of different neuron types are polarized by specific electric field (E-field) distributions. Objective: To quantify neuronal polarization generated by tDCS in a multi-scale computational model. Methods: We embedded layer-specific, morphologically-realistic cortical neuron models in a finite element model of the E-field in a human head and simulated steady-state polarization generated by conventional primary-motor-cortex–supraorbital (M1–SO) and 4 × 1 high-definition (HD) tDCS. We quantified somatic, axonal, and dendritic polarization of excitatory pyramidal cells in layers 2/3, 5, and 6, as well as inhibitory interneurons in layers 1 and 4 of the hand knob. Results: Axonal and dendritic terminals were polarized more than the soma in all neurons, with peak axonal and dendritic polarization of 0.92 mV and 0.21 mV, respectively, compared to peak somatic polarization of 0.07 mV for 1.8 mA M1–SO stimulation. Both montages generated regions of depolarization and hyperpolarization beneath the M1 anode; M1–SO produced slightly stronger, more diffuse polarization peaking in the central sulcus, while 4 × 1 HD produced higher peak polarization in the gyral crown. The E-field component normal to the cortical surface correlated strongly with pyramidal neuron somatic polarization (R2>0.9), but exhibited weaker correlations with peak pyramidal axonal and dendritic polarization (R2:0.5–0.9) and peak polarization in all subcellular regions of interneurons (R2:0.3–0.6). Simulating polarization by uniform local E-field extracted at the soma approximated the spatial distribution of tDCS polarization but produced large errors in some regions (median absolute percent error: 7.9 %). Conclusions: Polarization of pre- and postsynaptic compartments of excitatory and inhibitory cortical neurons may play a significant role in tDCS neuromodulation. These effects cannot be predicted from the E-field distribution alone but rather require calculation of the neuronal response.

Measurement of the input–output (IO) curves of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used to assess corticospinal excitability and motor recruitment. While IO curves have been used to study disease and pharmacology, few studies have compared the IO curves across the body. This study sought to characterize IO curve parameters across the dominant and non-dominant sides of upper and lower limbs in healthy participants. Laterality preferences were assessed in eight healthy participants and IO curves were measured bilaterally for the first dorsal interosseous (FDI), biceps brachii (BB), and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles. Results show that FDI has lower motor threshold than BB which is, in turn, lower than TA. In addition, both BB and TA have markedly shallower logarithmic IO curve slopes from small to large MEP responses than FDI. After normalizing these slopes by their midpoints to account for differences in motor thresholds, which could result from geometric factors such as the target depth, large differences in logarithmic slopes remain present between all three muscles. The differences in slopes between the muscles could not be explained by differences in normalized IO curve spreads, which relate to the extent of the cortical representation and were comparable across the muscles. The IO curve differences therefore suggest muscle-dependent variations in TMS-evoked recruitment across the primary motor cortex, which should be considered when utilizing TMS-evoked MEPs to study disease states and treatment effects.

Despite many research studies, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is not yet an FDA-approved clinical therapy for dystonia patients. This review describes the four major challenges that have historically hindered the clinical translation of TMS. The four challenges described are limited types of clinical trial designs, limited evidence on objective behavioral measures, variability in the TMS clinical response, and the extensive TMS parameters to optimize for clinical therapy. Progress has been made to diversify the types of clinical trial design available to clinical researchers, identify evidence-based objective behavioral measures, and reduce the variability in TMS clinical response. Future studies should identify objective behavioral measures for other dystonia subtypes and expand the optimal TMS stimulation parameters for clinical therapy. Our review highlights the key progress made to overcome these barriers and gaps that remain for TMS to develop into a long-lasting clinical therapy for dystonia patients.

Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can modulate neural activity by evoking action potentials in cortical neurons. TMS neural activation can be predicted by coupling subject-specific head models of the TMS-induced electric field (E-field) to populations of biophysically realistic neuron models; however, the significant computational cost associated with these models limits their utility and eventual translation to clinically relevant applications. Objective: To develop computationally efficient estimators of the activation thresholds of multi-compartmental cortical neuron models in response to TMS-induced E-field distributions. Methods: Multi-scale models combining anatomically accurate finite element method (FEM) simulations of the TMS E-field with layer-specific representations of cortical neurons were used to generate a large dataset of activation thresholds. 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were trained on these data to predict thresholds of model neurons given their local E-field distribution. The CNN estimator was compared to an approach using the uniform E-field approximation to estimate thresholds in the non-uniform TMS-induced E-field. Results: The 3D CNNs estimated thresholds with mean absolute percent error (MAPE) on the test dataset below 2.5% and strong correlation between the CNN predicted and actual thresholds for all cell types (R2 > 0.96). The CNNs estimated thresholds with a 2–4 orders of magnitude reduction in the computational cost of the multi-compartmental neuron models. The CNNs were also trained to predict the median threshold of populations of neurons, speeding up computation further. Conclusion: 3D CNNs can estimate rapidly and accurately the TMS activation thresholds of biophysically realistic neuron models using sparse samples of the local E-field, enabling simulating responses of large neuron populations or parameter space exploration on a personal computer.

La nueva normalidad, se presenta como una posibilidad impuesta desde arriba o como una construida desde las bases, en donde es clave la creación de un nuevo marco conceptual, coherente con la responsabilidad política actual, que les entregue a los movimientos sociales, el sustento teórico para su renovación y para la creación de nuevas estrategias, que permitan dar una respuesta democrática de base, ante las tendencias de represión y de violencia estatal.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate cortical oscillations and associated long-lasting cognitive and behavioral functions in humans. Here, the authors provide in vivo evidence in ferrets on the mechanism of how weak electric fields in tACS can entrain neuronal activity.

Background: Transcranial electrical stimulation at an appropriate dose may demonstrate intracranial effects, including neuronal stimulation and cerebral blood flow responses. Objective: We performed in vivo experiments on mouse cortex using transcranial alternating current [AC] stimulation to assess whether cerebral blood flow can be reliably altered by extracranial stimulation. Methods: We performed transcranial AC electrical stimulation transversely across the closed skull in anesthetized mice, measuring transcranial cerebral blood flow with a laser Doppler probe and intracranial electrical responses as endpoint biomarkers. We calculated a stimulation dose–response function between intracranial electric field and cerebral blood flow. Results: Stimulation at electric field amplitudes of 5–20 mV/mm at 10–20 Hz rapidly increased cerebral blood flow (within 100 ms), which then quickly decreased with no residual effects. The time to peak and blood flow shape varied with stimulation intensity and duration, showing a linear correlation between stimulation dose and peak blood flow increase. Neither afterdischarges nor spreading depression occurred from this level of stimulation. Conclusions: Extracranial stimulation amplitudes sufficient to evoke reliable blood flow changes require electric field strengths higher than what is tolerable in unanesthetized humans (40 mV/mm). However, anesthesia effects, spontaneous blood flow fluctuations, and sampling error may accentuate the apparent field strength needed for enhanced blood flow. The translation to a human dose–response function to augment cerebral blood flow (i.e., in stroke recovery) will require significant modification, potentially to pericranial, focused, multi-electrode application or intracranial stimulation.

Background: Accurate data on the sound emitted by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coils is lacking. Methods: We recorded the sound waveforms of seven coils with high bandwidth. We estimated the neural stimulation strength by measuring the induced electric field and applying a strength–duration model to account for different waveforms. Results: Across coils, at maximum stimulator output and 25 cm distance, the sound pressure level (SPL) was 98–125 dB(Z) per pulse and 76–98 dB(A) for a 20 Hz pulse train. At 5 cm distance, these values were estimated to increase to 112–139 dB(Z) and 90–112 dB(A), respectively. Conclusions: The coils’ airborne sound can exceed some exposure limits for TMS subjects and, in some cases, for operators. These findings are consistent with the current TMS safety guidelines that recommend the use of hearing protection.

TMS has become a powerful tool to explore cortical function, and in parallel has proven promising in the development of therapies for various psychiatric and neurological disorders. Unfortunately, much of the inference of the direct effects of TMS has been assumed to be limited to the area a few centimeters beneath the scalp, though clearly more distant regions are likely to be influenced by structurally connected stimulation sites. In this study, we sought to develop a novel paradigm to individualize TMS coil placement to non-invasively achieve activation of specific deep brain targets of relevance to the treatment of psychiatric disorders. In ten subjects, structural diffusion imaging tractography data were used to identify an accessible cortical target in the right frontal pole that demonstrated both anatomic and functional connectivity to right Brodmann area 25 (BA25). Concurrent TMS-fMRI interleaving was used with a series of single, interleaved TMS pulses applied to the right frontal pole at four intensity levels ranging from 80% to 140% of motor threshold. In nine of ten subjects, TMS to the individualized frontal pole sites resulted in significant linear increase in BOLD activation of BA25 with increasing TMS intensity. The reliable activation of BA25 in a dosage-dependent manner suggests the possibility that the careful combination of imaging with TMS can make use of network properties to help overcome depth limitations and allow noninvasive brain stimulation to influence deep brain structures.

Introduction: High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation applied to the motor cortex causes an increase in the amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) that persists after stimulation. Here, we focus on the aftereffects generated by high frequency controllable pulse TMS (cTMS) with different directions, intensities, and pulse durations.Objectives: To investigate the influence of pulse duration, direction, and amplitude in correlation to induced depolarization on the excitatory plastic aftereffects of 5 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) using bidirectional cTMS pulses.Methods: We stimulated the hand motor cortex with 5 Hz rTMS applying 1,200 bidirectional pulses with the main component durations of 80, 100, and 120 μs using a controllable pulse stimulator TMS (cTMS). Fourteen healthy subjects were investigated in nine sessions with 80% resting motor threshold (RMT) for posterior-anterior (PA) and 80 and 90% RMT anterior-posterior (AP) induced current direction. We used a model approximating neuronal membranes as a linear first order low-pass filter to estimate the strength–duration time constant and to simulate the membrane polarization produced by each waveform.Results: PA and AP 5 Hz rTMS at 80% RMT produced no significant excitation. An exploratory analysis indicated that 90% RMT AP stimulation with 100 and 120 μs pulses but not 80 μs pulses led to significant excitation. We found a positive correlation between the plastic outcome of each session and the simulated peak neural membrane depolarization for time constants >100 μs. This correlation was strongest for neural elements that are depolarized by the main phase of the AP pulse, suggesting the effects were dependent on pulse direction.Conclusions: Among the tested conditions, only 5 Hz rTMS with higher intensity and wider pulses appeared to produce excitatory aftereffects. This correlated with the greater depolarization of neural elements with time constants slower than the directly activated neural elements responsible for producing the motor output (e.g., somatic or dendritic membrane).Significance: Higher intensities and wider pulses seem to be more efficient in inducing excitation. If confirmed, this observation could lead to better results in future clinical studies performed with wider pulses.

Abstract Background Online repetitive transcranialmagnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been shown to modulate working memory (WM) performance in a site‐specific manner, with behavioral improvements due to stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and impairment from stimulation to the lateral parietal cortex (LPC). Neurobehavioral studies have demonstrated that subprocesses of WM allowing for the maintenance and manipulation of information in the mind involve unique cortical networks. Despite promising evidence of modulatory effects of rTMS on WM, no studies have yet demonstrated distinct modulatory control of these two subprocesses. The current study therefore sought to explore this possibility through site‐specific stimulation during an online task invoking both skills. Methods Twenty‐nine subjects completed a 4‐day protocol, in which active or sham 5Hz rTMS was applied over the DLPFC and LPC in separate blocks of trials while participants performed tasks that required either maintenance alone, or both maintenance and manipulation (alphabetization) of information. Stimulation targets were defined individually based on fMRI activation and structural network properties. Stimulation amplitude was adjusted using electric field modeling to equate induced current in the target region across participants. Results Despite the use of advanced techniques, no significant differences or interactions between active and sham stimulation were found. Exploratory analyses testing stimulation amplitude, fMRI activation, and modal controllability showed nonsignificant but interesting trends with rTMS effects. Conclusion While this study did not reveal any significant behavioral changes in WM, the results may point to parameters that contribute to positive effects, such as stimulation amplitude and functional activation.

Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) enables non-invasive modulation of brain activity with both clinical and research applications, but fundamental questions remain about the neural types and elements TMS activates and how stimulation parameters affect the neural response. Objective: To develop a multi-scale computational model to quantify the effect of TMS parameters on the direct response of individual neurons. Methods: We integrated morphologically-realistic neuronal models with TMS-induced electric fields computed in a finite element model of a human head to quantify the cortical response to TMS with several combinations of pulse waveforms and current directions. Results: TMS activated with lowest intensity intracortical axonal terminations in the superficial gyral crown and lip regions. Layer 5 pyramidal cells had the lowest thresholds, but layer 2/3 pyramidal cells and inhibitory basket cells were also activated at most intensities. Direct activation of layers 1 and 6 was unlikely. Neural activation was largely driven by the field magnitude, rather than the field component normal to the cortical surface. Varying the induced current direction caused a waveform-dependent shift in the activation site and provided a potential mechanism for experimentally observed differences in thresholds and latencies of muscle responses. Conclusions: This biophysically-based simulation provides a novel method to elucidate mechanisms and inform parameter selection of TMS and other cortical stimulation modalities. It also serves as a foundation for more detailed network models of the response to TMS, which may include endogenous activity, synaptic connectivity, inputs from intrinsic and extrinsic axonal projections, and corticofugal axons in white matter.

Background: Computational simulations of the E-field induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are increasingly used to understand its mechanisms and to inform its administration. However, characterization of the accuracy of the simulation methods and the factors that affect it is lacking. Objective: To ensure the accuracy of TMS E-field simulations, we systematically quantify their numerical error and provide guidelines for their setup. Method: We benchmark the accuracy of computational approaches that are commonly used for TMS E-field simulations, including the finite element method (FEM) with and without superconvergent patch recovery (SPR), boundary element method (BEM), finite difference method (FDM), and coil modeling methods. Results: To achieve cortical E-field error levels below 2%, the commonly used FDM and 1st order FEM require meshes with an average edge length below 0.4 mm, 1st order SPR-FEM requires edge lengths below 0.8 mm, and BEM and 2nd (or higher) order FEM require edge lengths below 2.9 mm. Coil models employing magnetic and current dipoles require at least 200 and 3000 dipoles, respectively. For thick solid-conductor coils and frequencies above 3 kHz, winding eddy currents may have to be modeled. Conclusion: BEM, FDM, and FEM all converge to the same solution. Compared to the common FDM and 1st order FEM approaches, BEM and 2nd (or higher) order FEM require significantly lower mesh densities to achieve the same error level. In some cases, coil winding eddy-currents must be modeled. Both electric current dipole and magnetic dipole models of the coil current can be accurate with sufficiently fine discretization.

Abstract As discussion of stress and stress-related disorders rapidly extends beyond the brain, gut microbiota have emerged as a promising contributor to individual differences in the risk of illness, disease course, and treatment response. Here, we employed chronic mild social defeat stress and 16S rRNA gene metagenomic sequencing to investigate the role of microbial composition in mediating anxiety- and depressive-like behavior. In socially defeated animals, we found significant reductions in the overall diversity and relative abundances of numerous bacterial genera, including Akkermansia spp., that positively correlated with behavioral metrics of both anxiety and depression. Functional analyses predicted a reduced frequency of signaling molecule pathways, including G-protein-coupled receptors, in defeated animals. Collectively, our data suggest that shifts in microbial composition may play a role in the pathogenesis of anxiety and depression.

Introduction: Cortical screws offer a less invasive alternative compared to traditional pedicle screws. These screws are inserted in an inferomedial to superolateral trajectory achieving greater cortical bone purchase. Similar fusion rates, pain relief, and decreased surgical morbidity at 12-month follow-up have been documented when compared to traditional pedicle screws. Using intra-operative imaging, neuronavigation, and individual neurophysiological monitoring of each screw, we showed that this is a safe surgical approach. Methods: Institutional review board (IRB) approved retrospective review of medical records for 173 patients to determine eligibility. Cases had to be elective one-or two-level fusion with surgical indication. Functional improvement was measured with Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) at pre and post-operative visits. Surgical morbidity data, individual screw thresholds, and radiographic evidence of stability was collected from electronic medical records (EMR). Results: A total of 153 patients met criteria with mean age 66.60 ± 9.30 (range: 34–84) and mean BMI of 28.76 ± 4.47 kg/m2. Of 558 screws inserted, no screws recorded

Background: During transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) a coil placed on the scalp is used to non-invasively modulate activity of targeted brain networks via a magnetically induced electric field (E-field). Ideally, the E-field induced during TMS is concentrated on a targeted cortical region of interest (ROI). Determination of the coil position and orientation that best achieve this objective presently requires a large computational effort. Objective: To improve the accuracy of TMS we have developed a fast computational auxiliary dipole method (ADM) for determining the optimum coil position and orientation. The optimum coil placement maximizes the E-field along a predetermined direction or, alternatively, the overall E-field magnitude in the targeted ROI. Furthermore, ADM can assess E-field uncertainty resulting from precision limitations of TMS coil placement protocols. Method: ADM leverages the electromagnetic reciprocity principle to compute rapidly the TMS induced E-field in the ROI by using the E-field generated by a virtual constant current source residing in the ROI. The framework starts by solving for the conduction currents resulting from this ROI current source. Then, it rapidly determines the average E-field induced in the ROI for each coil position by using the conduction currents and a fast-multipole method. To further speed-up the computations, the coil is approximated using auxiliary dipoles enabling it to represent all coil orientations for a given coil position with less than 600 dipoles. Results: Using ADM, the E-fields generated in an MRI-derived head model when the coil is placed at 5900 different scalp positions and 360 coil orientations per position (over 2.1 million unique configurations) can be determined in under 15 min on a standard laptop computer. This enables rapid extraction of the optimum coil position and orientation as well as the E-field variation resulting from coil positioning uncertainty. ADM is implemented in SimNIBS 3.2. Conclusion: ADM enables the rapid determination of coil placement that maximizes E-field delivery to a specific brain target. This method can find the optimum coil placement in under 15 min enabling its routine use for TMS. Furthermore, it enables the fast quantification of uncertainty in the induced E-field due to limited precision of TMS coil placement protocols, enabling minimization and statistical analysis of the E-field dose variability.

Accurate water consumption measurement of customers is a crucial component of water utility sustainability. During the last decade, sophisticated measuring technologies without moving components, known as solid-state water meters or static meters, have emerged. Solid-state water meters promise an improved accuracy with more processing and transmission capabilities in comparison with traditional mechanical meters. A compromise needs to be reached between energy consumption and battery life as all these new features are extremely demanding on electric energy. The usual approach adopted by the manufacturer is to reduce the frequency with which static meters take measurements of the circulating flow. This reduction in signal sampling frequency can have a significant effect on the accuracy of the instruments when measuring water consumption events of 30 s or less, these events being common in residential customers. The research presented analyses of the metrological performance of 28 commercially available solid-state water meters from six different manufacturers in the presence of intermittent flows of various durations. The results show that the magnitude and dispersion of the error under intermittent flows is significantly larger in comparison to steady state flow conditions. The ultrasonic meters examined were more influenced by the intermittency than the electromagnetic meters.

The process of manipulating information within working memory is central to many cognitive functions, but also declines rapidly in old age. Improving this process could markedly enhance the health-span in older adults. The current pre-registered, randomized and placebo-controlled study tested the potential of online repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied at 5 Hz over the left lateral parietal cortex to enhance working memory manipulation in healthy elderly adults. rTMS was applied, while participants performed a delayed-response alphabetization task with two individually titrated levels of difficulty. Coil placement and stimulation amplitude were calculated from fMRI activation maps combined with electric field modeling on an individual-subject basis in order to standardize dosing at the targeted cortical location. Contrary to the a priori hypothesis, active rTMS significantly decreased accuracy relative to sham, and only in the hardest difficulty level. When compared to the results from our previous study, in which rTMS was applied over the left prefrontal cortex, we found equivalent effect sizes but opposite directionality suggesting a site-specific effect of rTMS. These results demonstrate engagement of cortical working memory processing using a novel TMS targeting approach, while also providing prescriptions for future studies seeking to enhance memory through rTMS.

We are colonized by a vast population of genetically diverse microbes, the majority of which are unculturable bacteria that reside within the gastrointestinal tract. As affordable, advanced next-generation sequencing technologies become more widely available, important discoveries about the composition and function of these microbes become increasingly possible. In addition to rapid advancement in sequencing technologies, automated systems have been developed for nucleic acid extraction; however, these methods have yet to be widely used for the isolation of bacterial DNA from fecal samples. Here, we adapted Promega's Maxwell® RSC PureFood GMO and Authentication kit for use with fecal samples and compared it to the commonly used Qiagen QIAamp® PowerFecal® kit. Results showed that the two approaches yielded similar measures of DNA purity and successful next-generation sequencing amplification and produced comparable composition of microbial communities. However, DNA extraction with the Maxwell® RSC kit produced higher concentrations with a lower fecal sample input weight and took a fraction of the time compared to the QIAamp® PowerFecal® protocol. The results of this study demonstrate that the Promega Maxwell® RSC system can be used for medium-throughput DNA extraction in a time-efficient manner without compromising the quality of the downstream sequencing.

Sin embargo existen herramientas, cada vez más presentes, entre investigadores, educadores y otros profesionales, capaces de contribuir a elaborar interpretaciones y crear conocimiento desarrollando una perspectiva comunicativa participativa. Este artículo analiza cómo, a través de la interacción social y los procesos dialógicos generados a través de workshops de fotografía participativa, pueden impulsar la comunicación y el aprendizaje a través del diálogo y la práctica creativa, así como contribuir a la alfabetización mediática. Como todas las experiencias creativas de este tipo, no es solo un espacio para compartir productos, trabajos, técnicas o consejos, sino también un espacio para la interacción social y la comunicación. Los educadores del ámbito de la alfabetización en los medios pueden encontrar en estas iniciativas retos y oportunidades sin precedentes para aprovechar el volumen de conocimiento de los adolescentes y promover el aprendizaje.

In this paper, it is proposed that polymer-coated magnetic nanorods (MNRs) can be used with the advantage of a double objective: first, to serve as magnetic hyperthermia agents, and second, to be used as magnetic vehicles for the antitumor drug doxorubicin (DOX). Two different synthetic methodologies (hydrothermal and co-precipitation) were used to obtain MNRs of maghemite and magnetite. They were coated with poly(ethyleneimine) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate), and loaded with DOX, using the Layer-by-Layer technique. Evidence of the polymer coating and the drug loading was justified by ATR-FTIR and electrophoretic mobility measurements, and the composition of the coated nanorods was obtained by a thermogravimetric analysis. The nanorods were tested as magnetic hyperthermia agents, and it was found that they provided sufficiently large heating rates to be used as adjuvant therapy against solid tumors. DOX loading and release were determined by UV-visible spectroscopy, and it was found that up to 50% of the loaded drug was released in about 5 h, although the rate of release could be regulated by simultaneous application of hyperthermia, which acts as a sort of external release-trigger. Shape control offers another physical property of the particles as candidates to interact with tumor cells, and particles that are not too elongated can easily find their way through the cell membrane.

El presente artículo propone una reflexión sobre el selfie, no sólo para la presentación de la persona en los contextos sociales de interacción, sino también como práctica socio-técnica creativa, lúdica o auto-reflexiva sobre sí, el cuerpo y la identidad personal a través del dispositivo móvil. Esta práctica de autorretrato, vinculada generalmente a la narrativa cotidiana personal pasa a ser, a través de internet, una práctica pública que puede tener una amplia audiencia. En este sentido, podría entenderse también como una nueva forma cultural de presentación social de sí, que conllevaría un trabajo de performación de la identidad personal de un modo relacional, ya sea como una actuación pública del yo o como resultado de una práctica performativa sobre el propio cuerpo.

Magnetic stimulation is a standard tool in brain research and has found important clinical applications in neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation. Whereas coil designs and the spatial field properties have been intensively studied in the literature, the temporal dynamics of the field has received less attention. Typically, the magnetic field waveform is determined by available device circuit topologies rather than by consideration of what is optimal for neural stimulation. This paper analyzes and optimizes the waveform dynamics using a nonlinear model of a mammalian axon. The optimization objective was to minimize the pulse energy loss. The energy loss drives power consumption and heating, which are the dominating limitations of magnetic stimulation. The optimization approach is based on a hybrid global-local method. Different coordinate systems for describing the continuous waveforms in a limited parameter space are defined for numerical stability. The optimization results suggest that there are waveforms with substantially higher efficiency than that of traditional pulse shapes. One class of optimal pulses is analyzed further. Although the coil voltage profile of these waveforms is almost rectangular, the corresponding current shape presents distinctive characteristics, such as a slow low-amplitude first phase which precedes the main pulse and reduces the losses. Representatives of this class of waveforms corresponding to different maximum voltages are linked by a nonlinear transformation. The main phase, however, scales with time only. As with conventional magnetic stimulation pulses, briefer pulses result in lower energy loss but require higher coil voltage than longer pulses.
