Putting societal issues on the agenda of public action calls for advanced forms of collaboration between sectors and levels of governance. However, action systems have multiple silos, both horizontal and vertical, that impede collaboration. Therefore, clarifying the challenges of intersectoral and multi-level governance becomes highly relevant. Based on the three-I approach, a study of early childhood programs in Montreal highlights these issues. The study identifies various sectoral mechanisms and rules at the provincial level that hinder innovation in regional and local intersectoral action systems. Compartmentalized accountability by program appears to be the most constraining rule in favour of the status quo. The study illustrates how the local level can be both the place for reproducing sectorization and the ideal place for intersectoral coordination. JEL Codes: I18

Summary There are numerous hurdles down the road for successfully scaling up health promotion innovations into formal programmes. The challenges of the scaling-up process have mainly been conceived in terms of available resources and technical or management problems. However, aiming for greater impact and sustainability involves addressing new contexts and often adding actors whose perspectives may challenge established orientations. The social dimension of the scaling-up process is thus critical. Building on existing conceptualizations of interventions as dynamic networks and of evolving framing of health issues, this paper elaborates a social view of scaling up that accounts for the transformations of innovations, using framing analysis and the notion of ‘expanding scaling-up networks’. First, we discuss interventions as dynamic networks. Second, we conceptualize scaling-up processes as networks in expansion within which social learning and change occur. Third, we propose combining a ‘representational approach’ to frame analysis and an ‘interactional approach’ that illustrates framing processes related to the micro-practices of leading public health actors within expanding networks. Using an example concerning equity in early childhood development, we show that this latter approach allows documenting how frames evolve in the process. Considering the process in continuity with existing conceptualizations of interventions as actor-networks and transformation of meanings enriches our conceptualization of scaling up, improves our capacity to anticipate its outcomes, and promotes reflexivity about health promotion goals and means.

This article presents the translation and cultural adaptation, into Cana­dian English, of the Outil diagnostique de l’action en partenariat, a tool widely used to support the practice of partnerships since its creation in French, in Quebec, in 2008. The theoretical foundations and properties of the original tool are presented, followed by a summary of methodological guidelines and a description of the process and results. The methodology involved an expert committee to formulate the English tool and verify its equivalence with the original, and a pretest with target users. Th is rigorous procedure ensures equivalence of the translated tool and its cultural adapta­tion to the intended users.

Neighbourhood community life has been widely recognized as an important determinant of population health. This systematic review of reviews provides an overview of the evidence for the ecological correlation between neighbourhood community life and population health. Nine databases were searched from 2008 to 2018 in order to identify systematic reviews of studies examining the association between neighbourhood community life and population health in urban neighbourhoods within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. Two reviewers completed selection and data extraction, then assessed the methodological quality of reviews using the Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews. We identified three high quality reviews and five of moderate quality. The reviews vary in quality of methodology, concepts, and measures. Most of the reviews examined the influence of social cohesion, social capital, and social interactions on health. Reviews found evidence supporting a consistently favourable correlation between social cohesion and physical activity, as well as a favourable trend in the relationship between social cohesion and healthy weight. They also found evidence of a favourable trend in the correlation between social capital and healthy weight. Reviews identified studies supporting a consistently favourable correlation between social interaction and depression. We identify evidence of a positive association between neighbourhood community life and several population health outcomes. Future research should define and conceptualize neighbourhood community life factors and health indicators to improve the comparison between studies and the process of evidence synthesis. This will also enable policy makers to take appropriate decisions.

After 25 years of intersectoral practice to increase health promotion resources, there is little scientific literature linking analysis of processes to observation of effects. Applying Actor-Network Theory, this article examines how the effects of intersectoral action are produced and can be attributed to its processes. A prospective multiple case study (2013-2016) was conducted on Neighbourhood Committees (NCs) in Montreal (Canada). Three NCs were studied using four kinds of data: direct observation notes of meetings and events, documents, logbooks and interviews. Systemic modelling of local intersectoral action was used for data collection and analysis. The results show that the transformations in living environments were produced by sequences of a limited number of 'transitory outcomes' that mark the progression of intersectoral action up to its effects. The list of transitory outcomes identified make up three functions in the production of change: (i) network setup and governance; (ii) self-representing and influencing others; (iii) aligning necessary actors and resources. The production of effects follows a systemic model wherein unique configurations of transitory outcomes, adapted to the different contexts where interactions are occurring, represent the change processes that lead to the effects.

In 2006, the department of public health in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, conducted the Survey of the School Readiness of Montreal Children. After unveiling the results in February 2008, it launched an appeal for intersectoral mobilization. This article documents the chain of events in the collective decision-making process that fostered ownership of the survey results and involvement in action. It also documents the impacts of those findings on intersectoral action and the organization of early childhood services four years later. The results show that the survey served as a catalyst for intersectoral action as reflected in the increased size and strength of the actor network and the formalization of the highly-anticipated collaboration between school and early childhood networks. Actors have made abundant use of survey results in planning and justifying the continuation of projects or implementation of new ones. A notable outcome, in all territories, has been the development of both transition-to-kindergarten tools and literacy activities. The portrait drawn by the research raises significant issues for public planning while serving as a reminder of the importance of intersectoral mobilization in providing support for multiple trajectories of child preschool development.

OBJECTIVES: Based on a theory of intervention as a complex action system, analyze collaboration among partners in Montréal’s sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI) prevention program to identify main operations problems and possible scenarios for change to achieve better outcomes. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted using three data sources - public policies and programs, system management documents, and interviews with three types of partners. The results were validated with stakeholders. RESULTS: Five main operations problems affecting the capacity of the system to provide expected services were identified, as well as strategies the partners use to address these. CONCLUSION: Two scenarios for system change to increase its effectiveness in achieving program goals are discussed.

This article proposes a sociologically informed theoretical and methodological framework to address the complexity of public health interventions (PHI). It first proposes three arguments in favour of using the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) for the framework. ANT: (1) deals with systems made of human and non-human entities and proposes a relational view of action; (2) provides an understanding of the intervention-context interactions and (3) is a tool for opening the intervention's black box. Three principles derived from ANT addressing theoretical problems with conceptualisation of PHI as complex systems are proposed: (1) to focus on the process of connecting the network entities instead of their stabilised form; (2) both human and non-human entities composing networks have performative capacities and (3) network and intervention shape one another. Three methodological guidelines are further derived: (1) the researcher's task consists in documenting the events that transform the network and intervention; (2) events must be ordered chronologically to represent the intervention's evolution and (3) a broad range of data is needed to capture complex interventions' evolution. Using ANT as a guide, this paper helps reconcile technicist and social views of PHI and provides a mean to integrate process and effect studies of interventions.

Abstract: This article discusses three perspectives on the nature of programs to clarify the purposes of an evaluation. An empirical realist program design views programs as real objects that allow dysfunctional and problematic objects to be repaired. In that view, the purpose of the evaluation is to determine the efficacy of programs to solve problems. An idealist design views both programs and the problems they address as representations, which leads to evaluation intended to reconcile the players’ representations. In a critical realist design both programs and problems are events resulting from causal mechanisms activated by the program players. From that perspective, the purpose of the evaluation is to support innovation and program transformation.

Cet article décrit les interventions issues de la collaboration école-communauté, en contexte montréalais pluriethnique et socio-économiquement défavorisé, en vertu de leurs domaines d’activités, des objectifs qu’elles poursuivent, des populations visées et des stratégies déployées. Les interventions sont comparées pour les deux ordres d’enseignement. La composition des réseaux d’acteurs de même que les structures et la dynamique collaboratives à la base des interventions sont aussi décrites. L’article discute de la correspondance entre ces interventions et les orientations des politiques publiques en éducation et en santé en vertu desquelles elles sont déployées. Enfin, il interpelle les acteurs quant aux potentialités et limites de ce type d’interventions comme stratégie de soutien à la réussite éducative en contexte pluriethnique et défavorisé., This article describes interventions produced by school-community local networks in multi-ethnic and disadvantaged communities in Montréal. The fields of activity, objectives, targets and strategies are described and compared for elementary and secondary schools. School partners involved in school-community collaborations, and the structures and dynamics of their collaborative arrangements are also described. The discussion compares theses interventions with the objectives of Québec’s public education and health policies, which promote school-community collaboration. Finally, the article questions actors on possibilities and limits of these kinds of interventions in supporting school success in multiethnic and disadvantaged communities.

OBJECTIVES: Intervening on social determinants of health requires that public health stakeholders enter into intersectoral partnerships. The lack of valid tools to evaluate the quality of partnerships is a significant constraint to formulating convincing arguments for this kind of action. In light of this shortcoming, the tool described in this article evaluates processes of collective action based on key aspects of its effectiveness. METHOD: The tool is based on a theoretical model that followed from case studies identifying the conditions associated with quality of partnerships. The tool was developed by operationalizing these conditions into a series of statements, and pretested using the cognitive interviewing method. Construct validity and ecological validity were verified. RESULTS: The tool includes 18 items, with 3 answer choices provided for each item. It is sensitive to variations in judgement. It allows for good convergence among respondents from participating organizations within a partnership; it can also distinguish between partnerships that have difficulty meeting certain conditions and those that do not. The tool is suitable for self-evaluation of partnerships engaged in common projects that involve more than information exchange. DISCUSSION: The tool’s validity resides in its validation procedure and in the basic soundness of its theoretical model, which is supported by a number of literature reviews on how partnerships function and their results.

Cette étude de cas porte sur l’évaluation participative d’une intervention d’accompagnement scolaire à base communautaire dont le but est de favoriser la réussite scolaire en milieux montréalais socio-économiquement défavorisés. L’évaluation a été réalisée en collaboration étroite avec les acteurs de l’intervention. Elle compare les processus et les effets de l’intervention à base communautaire avec les interventions institutionnelles usuelles et montre les attributs innovants de l’intervention à base communautaire et son effet de protection auprès des enfants évoluant dans des conditions psychosociales adverses. Le partage de ces résultats motive la stabilisation du partenariat école—communauté à la base de l’intervention et la récurrence de son financement, et suscite la mobilisation de nouveaux partenariats sociaux.

L'évaluation des interventions en promotion de la santé est de plus en plus répandue, répondant ainsi à deux besoins cruciaux dans le domaine, soit: 1) justifier les ressources investies en démontrant ses effets et 2) soutenir les processus innovants nécessaires pour aligner les interventions avec les principes, valeurs et engagements de la Charte d'Ottawa pour la promotion de la santé, document fondateur du champ. Dans cet article, nous proposons que dans un cas comme dans l'autre, cet alignement que nous défendons comme inhérent à la promotion de la santé, pose des problèmes cruciaux pour l'évaluation. Ces problèmes se traduisent en trois défis de pertinence auxquels l'évaluateur en promotion de la santé doit confronter sa pratique: 1) définir l'intervention à évaluer de façon à élaborer des questions d'évaluation pertinentes; 2) mettre en œuvre des méthodologies de recherche adéquates et rigoureuses; et 3) produire des connaissances pertinentes pour l'action. Cross-sector collaboration that leads to sustained systematic referral to police and social–legal support for women victims of conjugal violence continues to present a challenge in this field of intervention. This article discusses an evaluation of planning practices used for the development, implementation and sustainability of this type of innovative initiative: the socio-legal protocol in the region of Bas Saint-Laurent in Québec. The approach used was a longitudinal interpretive study based on a social theory of innovation, the theory of innovation translation. The planning practices deployed consisted in a strategic breakdown of the desired outcome and actors to mobilise, and the implementation of collaborative arrangements that made it possible to overcome controversies that have historically divided this field. The study shows that initial commitment of the various actors and demonstration of the feasibility of such an initiative are not enough to ensure it is sustained within organisations. These types of innovations rest on a patiently constructed network of alliances that is never stabilised. To facilitate continuity of these initiatives, their promoters must maintain a constant vigilance aimed at perpetually reinforcing the network of actors and preventing committed sectors from discontinuing their participation.

Abstract: A growing number of tools are now available to enhance the validity and social relevance of knowledge produced through the participatory spaces that program evaluation makes possible. Tools that facilitate a shared understanding of a program and its results are of this nature. However, evaluation teams are generally less equipped to support participation through the strategic processes of planning an evaluation or of redesigning a program based on evaluation results. This article presents social and technical processes that can enhance the participation of actors from the program system in these strategic choices. In addition to the usual tools that support program modeling mechanisms and validation of research results, the instruments presented address the implementation of a participatory space, choice of evaluation questions, assessment of findings, and purposeful deliberation on future program directions. These instruments enhance the social contribution of evaluation by introducing greater rationality in participatory evaluation.

Abstract: The effectiveness of participatory planning and partnership practices in the public health field is a neglected issue. While the literature shows evidence of the meagre results of technocratic models, few studies describe the conditions for the success of participatory approaches. This article presents the results of a comparative study of four participative regional planning experiments in Montreal, focusing on the relationship between participative planning and partnership processes and the quality of the results obtained. It analyzes the social relations and forms of collaboration between the actors in order to understand the processes leading to different evaluation outcomes of different measures of quality. This type of evaluation can contribute to improving partnerships, because the results relate the specific dynamics of the participatory processes to their degree of success.

Introduction La theorie de l’acteur-reseau (TAR) est reconnue pour etre conceptuellement utile pour investiguer les realites complexes et analyser la production du changement. En sante publique, elle constitue un puissant outil conceptuel pour ouvrir la boite noire des interventions en aidant a montrer les processus de changement qui y ont cours et comment les resultats sont atteints. Cependant, pour travailler avec la TAR, les chercheurs et praticiens ont besoin d’outils methodologiques pour suivre les processus de changement. Puisque la TAR est aussi consideree comme une methodologie pour apprehender les situations, il est interessant de developper une instrumentation a cet effet. Cette communication presente les principaux concepts retenus de la TAR et les outils methodologiques produits en travaillant avec cette theorie pour investiguer les interventions de sante publique (ISP) engagees dans le changement social, qui sont le plus souvent a base intersectorielle et communautaire et qui rassemblent une large etendue d’acteurs heterogenes. Methodologie Le cadre conceptuel et la boite a outils presentes ont ete elabores a travers notre experience terrain et nos recherches utilisant la TAR, ainsi que son utilisation par d’autres chercheurs. Resultats Les principaux resultats seront presentes en quatre points : 1) les trois raisons principales qui appuient la pertinence de la TAR pour investiguer les ISP ; 2) certains des principes au fondement de la TAR retenus comme importants pour l’investigation des ISP ; 3) les concepts de la TAR retenus pour l’etude des ISP ; 4) les outils methodologiques developpes, qui sont des outils figuratifs (modelisations et matrices) aidant a synthetiser de grande quantite d’information et a diriger l’interpretation des situations sous etude dans le sens de la TAR. Discussion La discussion interroge si et dans quelle mesure investiguer et reflechir les ISP a l’aide de la TAR et des outils methodologiques produits peut entrainer des changements dans la conception meme des ISP.

Introduction Assurer la sante de la population pose le defi des interventions basees sur des donnees probantes. Alors que les processus d’action communautaires sont identifies comme leviers d’action sur les determinants sociaux de la sante, les solutions en recherche interventionnelle demeurent moins documentees que les problemes. Comment produire de la connaissance sur ces processus qui faconnent les transformations sur le terrain alors que ceux-ci sont constitues d’interactions continues et complexes ? L’objectif du partenariat de recherche sur l’intersectorialite a Montreal (PRIM) est de mieux comprendre les interventions de sante publique en soutien au developpement social local. Le programme sous etude soutient l’action de trente tables de quartier a Montreal, chacune assumant un mandat d’organisation et d’animation de la concertation locale. Methodologie Le PRIM qui implique des chercheurs de la sante et des sciences sociales et les partenaires de l’action, se presente comme un dispositif innovant d’etude des processus de concertation locale et de leurs effets sur les conditions de vie. Celui-ci se caracterise par des formes structurelles et inedites de recherche « integree » sur le terrain ou les chercheurs sont a la fois « dans » et « hors » l’intervention, interchangeables et complementaires entre eux, chacun et tous participant d’un processus de production collective de la recherche. Resultats A l’aide d’une analyse retrospective et critique de l’experience acquise depuis trois ans, nous montrerons comment se construit et se deploie un laboratoire en recherche interventionnelle en sante des populations, les defis et arrangements qui marquent son parcours et comment cette forme de production de la recherche peut s’averer garante de collaborations conduisant a un developpement de connaissances a la fois consolide et novateur. Discussion La discussion identifiera les principaux enseignements a tirer de cette experience a des fins de replication ou de mise a l’echelle dans des programmes de recherche de plus grande portee.

Intervention The intervention being examined is Understanding the Early Years (UEY), a Canada-wide initiative aiming to strengthen communities' capacity to use quality information to support the thought process relating to the organization of early childhood services. Twelve Canadian regions took part, including Montreal. Results The time chart for the collective decision-making process presents the events that significantly influenced the procedure: establishment of an intersectoral working committee, production of a portrait of the neighbourhood, think tank, development and implementation of the Passage maison-ecole [home-to-school] and Femmes-Relais [relay women] projects, retreats, and inclusion of school readiness as a priority focus area in the neighbourhood's three-year action plan. Also presented are the contextual factors that influenced decision making: the neighbourhood's cooperation and coordination history, the researcher's involvement, financial support and shared leadership. Conclusion The benefits of UEY-Montreal in this territory extended beyond 2006. With respect to current priorities for action in early childhood, this territory is a good example of mobilization for school readiness.

L'augmentation constante des grossesses e l'adolescence observee au Quebec au cours de la derniere decennie et leur concentration en milieu de pauvrete ont conduit e l'experimentation du projet Sexprimer, pour une sexualite responsable aupres d'eleves de troisieme et quatrieme secondaires de trois ecoles de Montreal, de 1987 e 1991. Sexprimer est un programme multifactoriel et intersectoriel de promotion d'une sexualite responsable et de prevention des grossesses e l'adolescence qui propose trois axes d'intervention realises concuremment: un programme educatif, un soutien clinique adapte, et un programme de soutien de la communication parents/adolescents. In sociological terms, an evaluation can be considered as a collective decision to step back, take a second look, and formulate a judgement on a public program. This collective decision is usually borne by a limited number of actors who elaborate their thinking with the advice and support of an evaluator. In the past two decades, major developments in the field of evaluation have emerged through the practice of “participatory evaluation.” This approach requires an expansion of the number of actors beyond the initial proponents and the evaluator so as to expand as much as possible the scope of the reflection. A public program involves many actors, all of whom have interests at stake, some of which are liable to be divergent. When judgements are made without somehow including the diverse stakeholders or their spokespersons, issues concerning the results and their utilization are more likely to surface (Weiss, 1983a). OBJECTIF: Le maintien à long terme des programmes de promotion de la santé en milieu de travail (PPSMT) demeure un défi en santé publique. Cet article présente l’évaluation de l’implantation et de la pérennisation de tels programmes dans des entreprises privées québécoises de travailleurs cols bleus afin d’éclairer les enjeux particuliers à ce milieu. MÉTHODE: La méthode utilisée est l’étude de cas multiples (4 sites), longitudinale (7 ans) et interprétative. Le cadre d’interprétation conçoit que l’implantation et la pérennisation des PPSMT dans les entreprises sont le résultat d’apprentissages organisationnels en promotion de la santé, ceux-ci étant déterminés par les stratégies des acteurs en position de contrôle qui façonnent les processus décisionnels concernant ces programmes. RÉSULTATS: Au terme des sept années d’observation, deux des quatre sites avaient maintenu leur PPSMT, bien que ces programmes n’étaient plus appliqués concrètement dans ces entreprises. Les apprentissages organisationnels réalisés en promotion de la santé dans ces deux sites ont été délimités en vertu des finalités organisationnelles visées par les décideurs ayant soutenu les PPSMT. Ces acquis ont été en grande partie perdus lorsque les PPSMT ont cessé d’être retenus par les décideurs comme un élément de leur stratégie de développement organisationnel. DISCUSSION: Les conditions organisationnelles propices aux PPSMT sont difficiles à réunir et davantage encore à maintenir dans les entreprises du type de celles étudiées. Les entreprises implantent avant tout ces programmes pour les avantages organisationnels qu’elles escomptent à court terme, alors que l’amélioration de la santé des travailleurs à plus long terme apparaît en elle-même comme une finalité de peu d’intérêt.

The innovative practice that resulted from the Ottawa Charter challenges public health knowledge about programming and evaluation. Specifically, there is a need to formulate program theory that embraces social determinants of health and local actors’ mobilization for social change. Likewise, it is imperative to develop a theory of evaluation that fosters reflexive understanding of public health programs engaged in social change. We believe advances in contemporary social theory that are founded on a critique of modernity and that articulate a coherent theory of practice should be considered when addressing these critical challenges.

Au cours des trente dernières années, la transformation des pratiques planificatrices dans la sphère publique s’est appuyée sur la critique du paradigme rationaliste, articulée par les courants pragmatique et communicationnel. Dans le champ de la santé publique, l’ouverture de la planification à la participation donne lieu à un important débat sur la place des citoyens et des communautés dans les programmes publics. Au Québec, trois grandes opérations témoignent du chemin parcouru. Elles permettent aussi d’envisager les potentialités encore inexplorées de la participation comme instrument de démocratisation et d’efficacité de la planification publique., Over the last thirty years, transformations to planning practices in the public sector have been based on a critique of the rationalist paradigm, articulated through pragmatic and communicational streams. In the field of public health, a major debate on the place of citizens and communities has arisen from opening up planning practices to participation. In Quebec, three major actions attest to the headway that has been made. These actions also allow us to consider unexplored opportunities for participation as an instrument of democratisation and effectiveness in public planning.

Cet article présente la modélisation d’une forme particulière de pratique communautaire école-famille-communauté, celle de l’intervenant communautaire-scolaire au centre d’une initiative intersectorielle d’un quartier multiculturel du nord de Montréal. Les résultats découlent d’une analyse qualitative réalisée sur un corpus de données documentaires, d’entrevues et de notes d’observation. Ils mettent en relief les dimensions et formes spécifiques du métier. Celui-ci est en continuité avec les métiers de l’animation sociale, avec pour spécificité un assemblage original de ces formes d’action dans une même initiative, notamment en raison de sa capacité à prendre en considération les conditions fondamentales d’une intervention socio-éducative., This paper presents the modelling of a specific form of community practice, namely the school, family, and community partnership, one where the development practitioner stands at the center of an intersectorial measure adopted in an urban multicultural district located in the northern part of Montreal. Our findings stem from a qualitative analysis performed on a theme-based collection of literature, interviews, and field observations. They emphasize dimensions and specific forms of the development practitioner trade. The development practitioner stands next to –in continuity with– trades linked to community leadership, but with the specific feature of presenting an original assemblage of those forms of action in the same initiative, notably because of its capacity to take into account the base conditions of socio-educational intervention.

Cet article porte sur une initiative de collaboration École-Communauté dans le contexte montréalais. L’initiative Un milieu ouvert sur ses écoles (MOÉ) présente toutes les caractéristiques d’une action à base communautaire reprenant, selon une composition cependant fort particulière, l’ensemble des ingrédients connus d’une collaboration École-Communauté efficiente. Nous montrerons dans cet article en quoi cette composition produit par petites touches une innovation, dont l’essence s’exprime tout entière par le renversement symbolique énoncé dans le nom même de l’initiative, soit le fait que ce soit la communauté qui s’ouvre à l’école, et non le contraire, comme c’est très souvent le cas. Les résultats que nous présentons découlent d’une analyse qualitative réalisée sur un corpus de données documentaires, d’entrevues et de notes d’observation visant à modéliser la pratique professionnelle qui incarne le plus concrètement l’intervention de MOÉ, soit celle des intervenants communautaires scolaires (ICS)., This article focuses on a collaborative school-community in the city of Montreal. The initiative An open its middle schools (EOM) has all the characteristics of a community-based work resuming, according to a very particular composition, however, all known efficient collaboration School-Community ingredients. Cet article reprend les principaux constats d’une étude portant sur l’expérience socioscolaire de trois groupes de jeunes issus de l’immigration dans trois écoles en milieu défavorisé à Montréal. À partir de leur propre analyse, les jeunes dégagent les différents facteurs, relations sociales et enjeux significatifs de leur expérience et donnent à celle-ci des significations normatives, stratégiques et éthiques. Leur analyse met en évidence l’impact des processus migratoires, culturels et sociaux de leur expérience socioscolaire. L’importance de faire une lecture fine et expérientielle des facteurs liés à la pluriethnicité ou à la défavorisation est finalement mise de l’avant., In a study conducted in 2008-2009 in three schools in a disadvantaged environment located in the Bordeaux-Cartierville neighbourhood of Montreal, we collected the reflections and discourses of three groups of youths from immigrant backgrounds, with various origins and ages, on several aspects of their academic and social experience. In this article, we present some general findings which arose from the analysis of their specific experiences, as viewed via normative, strategic and ethical significations revealed by the students about their own experience., Este artículo retoma las observaciones principales de un estudio realizado sobre la experiencia socioescolar de tres grupos de jóvenes producto de la emigración en tres escuelas de zonas desfavorecidas de Montreal. A partir de su propio análisis, estos jóvenes identifican los diferentes factores, relaciones sociales y cuestiones significativas de su experiencia y le dan significados normativos, estratégicos y éticos. Estos análisis evidencian el impacto de los procesos migratorios, culturales y sociales de su experiencia socioescolar. Finalmente, se resalta la importancia de hacer una lectura fina y experiencial de los factores ligados a la plurietnicidad o a la desfavorecimiento.
