We investigated herein the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica infection in sheep at Sejnane slaughterhouse, governorate of Bizerte, Northwest of Tunisia, using three different diagnostic techniques (liver dissection, bile examination, and coprology). Faeces, liver, gall bladder as well as blood samples were collected from 603 slaughtered sheep in two seasons: winter and summer. Faecal egg counts of F. hepatica were estimated using sedimentation technique. Livers were examined for the presence of flukes, and bile collected from gall bladder was examined by sedimentation technique for the presence of F. hepatica eggs. Faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal helminths were estimated using flotation followed by the McMaster technique. Blood samples were used to estimate blood cell count (RBC) (×10 6 /mL), haemoglobin (Hb) (g/dL), and haematocrit (Ht) (%) levels. A total of 1714 F. hepatica flukes were collected from 68 infected livers, the number of flukes per sheep ranged between naught and 195. Bile examination (16.78% ± 1.83; 51/310) showed the higher infection prevalence, followed by liver dissection (11.28% ± 1.17; 68/603) and coprology (9.12% ± 1.08; 55/603) (p = 0.015). Infection prevalences were significantly higher in young sheep aged of less than 1 year (8.13% ± 1.22; 49/498), in cross-bred sheep (10.61% ± 1.39%; 64/478), and in summer (7.13% ± 1.82; 43/293) (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in infection prevalence by gastrointestinal helminths in F. hepatica-infected and F. hepatica-non-infected animals (p > 0.05). The overall prevalence of F. hepatica-infected anaemic sheep was higher (22.73% ± 4.47; 20/88) than F. hepatica-non-infected anaemic sheep (p < 0.05). Fasciola hepatica infection is frequent in sheep from Sejnane representing hence an important constraint for the development of the sheep industry in this region. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and implement a specific control programme to reduce fasciolosis infection risks including animal owners' education., (© 2024 The Author(s). In 2019, 1.74 billion people worldwide had anemia. In Nigeria, women of reproductive age are the most affected. Domestic violence affects the anemia prevalence, but few studies have examined the influence of urbanization on women in heterosexual unions (currently married, and cohabiting between). Using the social determinants of health framework, we argue that food-based violence and anemia vary among women residing in rural and urban areas. We used the Chi-square test and logistic regression to analyze the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey records (n = 10,499). The study showed that anemia occurs more among women in rural (66%) than in urban (34%) areas. In rural areas, anemia was 29% higher among women who approved food-based domestic violence (OR: 1.29, CI 1.15-1.57) than those who did not. In urban areas, food-based domestic violence was not significantly associated with anemia. Purpose: To evaluate two-year mortality predictors in all subtypes of fragility fractures., Methods: Medical records review, single-center study with Portuguese patients with fragility fractures; A univariate analysis, with chi-square for categorical variables and parametric t-student and non-parametric Wilcoxon tests for continuous variables, was performed. Posteriorly, a survival analysis, with subsequent Cox regression was conducted to establish independent risk factors/ predictors of two-year mortality in fragility fractures., Results: 758 patients were enrolled in the study. We found a total of 151 deaths within the first two years post-fracture. On Cox regression, older age [OR1.10 CI (1.05-1.11)], male sex [OR1.85 CI(1.24-2.75)], anemia at baseline [OR2.44 CI(1.67-3.57)], malignancy [OR4.68 CI (2.13-10.27)], and multimorbidity [OR1.78 CI(1.11-2.87)] were found as independent predictors for two-year post-fracture mortality., Conclusion: Our study suggests that male sex, older age, anemia, malignancy, and multimorbidity are mortality predictors in the first two years after fragility fractures, reinforcing the importance of comorbidity management in preventing or, at least, minimizing adverse outcomes following fragility fractures., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Background: Maternal nutritional status before and during pregnancy is an important determinant of foetal health. In West Africa, maternal and child undernutrition remains a major public health problem and it is important to establish the mechanistic pathway linking the two disorders to help address the problem. We therefore assessed the mediating role of low birth weight (LBW) in the relationship of maternal undernutrition with child undernutrition in West Africa., Methods: We included recent (2010-2019) DHS data from thirteen West African countries. Poisson regression model with robust standard errors was used to assess the relationship between maternal undernutrition (body mass index and anaemia) and child undernutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia). Structural equation modelling was used to conduct the mediation analysis., Results: Prevalence of stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia among under-five children in West Africa was found to be 32.4%, 8.1%, 20.1%, and 71.5%, respectively. We found children of underweight mothers to be more likely to be undernourished (stunted, wasted, and underweight) and anaemic compared to children of normal-weight mothers. Also, children of anaemic mothers were more likely to be stunted and anaemic but not wasted compared with children of non-anaemic mothers. LBW mediated the observed relationships between maternal BMI and childhood stunting (22.6%), and maternal anaemia and childhood stunting (24.9%), wasting (11.7), and anaemia (6.6%)., Conclusion: We found maternal undernutrition to be associated with child undernutrition in West Africa with LBW noted to be a mediator of the observed relationship. We recommend that, to address the child undernutrition problem in West Africa, governments and policymakers must integrate measures to address the burden of LBW., (© 2024. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of anemia in children of two Guarani communities in Misiones, Argentina, and to analyze its association with socioenvironmental and parasitic factors. This cross-sectional study took place in two villages, Koen Ju and Kaa Poty, and included Mbya Guarani children aged 6 months to 14 years. A multivariable analysis was performed to evaluate the association of anemia with the presence of intestinal parasites. Altogether, 162 children were included in the study: 53.1% were boys, 32.7% had low weight-for-age, and 22.2% low height-for-age. Nearly half (46.9%, n=76) had anemia, which was mainly mild (92.1%), with a few moderate cases (7.9%). Of the 109 children who underwent testing for intestinal parasites, 89 (81.7%) had at least one, and 53 (59.5%) had more than one. The main parasite was Blastocystis hominis (49.5%), followed by Entamoeba coli (47.7%), hookworms (36.7%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (31.5%). In the multivariable analysis, anemia was associated with intestinal parasitosis (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 4.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-16.5; p=0.038) and male sex (adjusted OR 2.66; 95% CI 1.08-6.47; p= 0.01). Overall, we found that both anemia and intestinal parasites are common in the pediatric population of the Guarani ethnic group. Intestinal parasites and male sex were associated with the presence of anemia.

Objective: Anaemia is associated with an increased risk of disease progression and all-cause mortality among HIV-infected individuals, regardless of the type of anaemia, but the magnitude of the risk is greater with more severe forms of anaemia. Although anaemia PLWH has been extensively studied, the focus has primarily been on its prevalence and association with disease progression in untreated or poorly controlled HIV cases. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, and factors associated with moderate-to-severe anaemia among virally suppressed HIV patients at a tertiary hospital in Zambia., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of ART-treated PLWH for at least 6 months at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory were the data collected. The primary outcome moderate to severe anaemia was defined as follows; moderate anemia as haemaoglobin levels between 8.0-10.9 g/ and severe anemia as haemoglobin levels less than 8.0 g/dL according to the WHO classification. Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with moderate-to-severe anaemia., Results: Among 823 participants with viral suppression, the overall prevalence of anaemia and moderate-to-severe anaemia was 29.4% (n = 242; 95% confidence interval (CI): 26.3-32.6) and 14.2% (n = 117, 95% CI: 11.7-18), respectively. In the adjusted logistic regression analysis, women had higher odds of moderate to severe anaemia compared to men (AOR 2.618, 95% CI 1.182-5.799). Lymphocyte count (AOR 0.525, 95% CI 0.31-0.90) and higher BMI (AOR 1.0671, 95% CI 1.01-1.13) were also significant factors. Microcytosis (AOR 49.79, 95% CI 12.95-191.49) and normocytosis (AOR 4.38, 95% CI 1.22-15.75) were strongly associated with higher odds compared to macrocytosis. NNRTI treatment was associated with higher odds of anaemia compared to INSTI treatment (AOR 5.231, 95% CI 1.04-26.33). Traditional risk factors for anaemia like CD4+ count and tuberculosis infection were not significant., Conclusion: We found a higher prevalence of anaemia and moderate-to-severe anaemia in virally suppressed PLWH, suggesting factors beyond HIV contribute to the persistence of anaemia in this cohort. Women, lower lymphocyte count, higher BMI, low mean corpuscular volume (microcytosis) indicative of microcytic anaemia, and NNRTI-based ART regimens were independently associated with moderate-to-severe anaemia. Anemia is a common but often underdiagnosed and undertreated geriatric syndrome in hospitalized older patients. In this retrospective multicenter study, we aimed at characterizing the prevalence, risk factors, diagnostic and treatment approach to anemia in older patients admitted to acute care hospitals, focusing on differences between nephrology and geriatrics units. Prevalence and risk factors for anemia, diagnostic inertia (lack of iron, vitamin B12, and folate status assessment), replacement inertia (omitted treatment with iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid), and erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) inertia were explored. 1963 patients aged 82.7 (6.8) years were included in the study; 66.7% of the study population had anemia; among anemic patients, diagnostic inertia and replacement inertia were common with rates of 22-31% and 50-87%, respectively; omitted treatment with ESA affected 67.2% of patients and was more prevalent in geriatric units. In most cases, patients with ESA inertia were not routinely screened for iron tests. COPD, cancer, eGFR 45-60 ml/min were associated with increased tendency to ESA inertia. Background: Plasmodium falciparum infection is associated with the human ABO blood group. However, there is a paucity of data on the role that ABO and Rhesus blood groups play in malaria clinical presentations. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the association of human ABO blood groups and the Rhesus blood (Rh) types with the severity of malaria., Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Suhum Government Hospital in the Eastern region of Ghana. Conveniently, study participants with malaria, diagnosed by microscopy, were selected into the study. Subsequently, their ABO and Rh blood groups were determined (Accucare ABO/Rh monoclonal antibodies, Chennai, India). Malaria severity was assessed using the criteria for assessing severe malarial anaemia published by the World Health Organization. According to the criteria, severe malarial anaemia was classified as having haemoglobin (Hb) < 5 g/dL for children < 12 years and in patients ≥ 12 years, Hb level < 7 g/dL, with parasitaemia > 10,000/µL in both cases. Severe malarial anaemia was also classified as having plasma bilirubin > 50 µmol/L with parasitaemia ≥ 100,000/µL, for all ages. Chi square statistical analysis was used to test the association between the blood groups and the clinical or laboratory findings, while multivariate analysis was performed to identify which blood groups were more vulnerable to develop severe malarial anaemia., Results: Of the total number of the study participants (n = 328), most of the patients had blood group O Rh positive (35.7%) while few of them had blood group AB Rh negative (2.1%). The types of Rhesus did not associate with malaria. However, compared to blood group O, the odds of developing severe malarial anaemia, in children < 12 years and in patients ≥ 12 years, were 16 times and 17.8 times higher among patients with blood group A, respectively. Furthermore, the odds of having bilirubin level > 50 µmol/L with parasitaemia ≥ 100,000 /µL was 10 times higher among patients with blood groups A and 2.6 times higher in patients with blood group B, compared to blood group O. Finally, in patients with blood group A majority (71.6%) of them developed high temperature (> 37.5 °C) while 43.3% of them vomited and had diarrhoea. However, pallor (group B = 46.2% vs group A = 37.3%), fever (group B = 84.6% vs group A = 79.1%) and nausea (group B = 46.2% vs group A = 25.4%) were more frequent in patients with blood group B than A., Conclusions: This study found that people with blood groups A and B were severely affected by malaria, with group A being the most vulnerable. It is recommended that blood group assessment be performed for all patients with malaria. Background: Anaemia is a global public health issue that impacts individuals of all ages in both developed and developing countries. Anaemia is common in patients with diabetes mellitus; however, it is often undiagnosed and untreated. The main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of anaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus admitting to a medical unit at National Hospital Kandy., Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients admitted to a medical ward at National Hospital Kandy (NHK). They were assessed with a pre-tested, interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire using consecutive sampling method. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 26., Results: Total 252 patients with diabetes were included. The prevalence of anaemia in patients with T2DM was 31.3%. The corresponding values for males and females were 34.2% and 65.8% respectively. Independent predictors for anaemia among diabetic patients were older age, female gender, poor glycemic control, diabetes duration > 5 years, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, stage ≥ 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and usage of aspirin. These were significantly associated with the prevalence anemia among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender, age ≥ 65 years, diabetic duration > 5 years, poor glycaemic control, stage ≥ 3 CKD, diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy were associated with greater odds for the presence of anaemia., Conclusion: We found that 31.3% T2DM patients in a medical ward at NHK had previously undiagnosed anaemia. Anaemia screening during diabetes diagnosis, maintaining glycaemic control and raising patient awareness can reduce anaemia prevalence, improve patient quality of life and potentially reduce microvascular complications., (© 2024. Objectives: Anemia has been associated with an increased risk of both cardiac arrest and stroke, frequent complications of COVID-19. The effect of hemoglobin level at ICU admission on a composite outcome of cardiac arrest or stroke in an international cohort of COVID-19 patients was investigated., Design: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected database., Setting: A registry of COVID-19 patients admitted to ICUs at over 370 international sites was reviewed for patients diagnosed with cardiac arrest or stroke up to 30 days after ICU admission. Anemia was defined as: normal (hemoglobin ≥ 12.0 g/dL for women, ≥ 13.5 g/dL for men), mild (hemoglobin 10.0-11.9 g/dL for women, 10.0-13.4 g/dL for men), moderate (hemoglobin ≥ 8.0 and < 10.0 g/dL for women and men), and severe (hemoglobin < 8.0 g/dL for women and men)., Patients: Patients older than 18 years with acute COVID-19 infection in the ICU., Interventions: None., Measurements and Main Results: Of 6926 patients (median age = 59 yr, male = 65%), 760 patients (11.0%) experienced stroke (2.0%) and/or cardiac arrest (9.4%). Cardiac arrest or stroke was more common in patients with low hemoglobin, occurring in 12.8% of patients with normal hemoglobin, 13.3% of patients with mild anemia, and 16.7% of patients with moderate/severe anemia. Time to stroke or cardiac arrest by anemia status was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression with death as a competing risk. Covariates selected through clinical knowledge were age, sex, comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiac or neurologic conditions), pandemic era, country income, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Moderate/severe anemia was associated with a higher risk of cardiac arrest or stroke (hazard ratio, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.05-1.67)., Conclusions: In an international registry of ICU patients with COVID-19, moderate/severe anemia was associated with increased hazard of cardiac arrest or stroke., Competing Interests: Drs. Few studies have focused on the risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in small for gestational age (SGA) infants. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for NEC in SGA newborns. This study included consecutive SGA neonates admitted to a tertiary hospital in Jiangxi Province, China from Jan 2008 to Dec 2022. Patients with NEC (Bell's stage ≥ II) were assigned to the NEC group. Gestational age- and birth weight-matched non-NEC infants born during the same period at the same hospital were assigned to the control group. The risk factors associated with NEC were analyzed with univariate and logistic regression models. During the study period, 2,912 SGA infants were enrolled, 150 (5.15%) of whom developed NEC. In total, 143 patients and 143 controls were included in the NEC and control groups, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that sepsis (OR 2.399, 95% CI 1.271-4.527, P = 0.007) and anemia (OR 2.214, 95% CI 1.166-4.204, P = 0.015) might increase the incidence of NEC in SGA infants and that prophylactic administration of probiotics (OR 0.492, 95% CI 0.303-0.799, P = 0.004) was a protective factor against NEC. The prevalence of anemia in adults with diabetes is of growing importance due to its impact on overall health and the management of diabetes-related complications. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anemia among adult patients with diabetes at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A retrospective study was done on 1208 patients with diabetes >18 years who attended the study setting from 2010 to 2022. Data about patients' demographics, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c; %), hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, iron, mean corpuscular Hb, mean corpuscular volume, free thyroxine and triiodothyronine (T3), and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were collected. Of patients, 86.6% had anemia with a prevalence of 30.2%, 47.6%, and 22.2% for mild, moderate, and severe anemias, respectively. The prevalence of anemia was significantly higher among females, those with high serum ferritin, normal serum iron or normal serum T3, lower mean HbA1c level (%), lower serum iron or T3, and higher serum ferritin or TSH. A significant positive correlation was found between Hb level and HbA1c level (%), serum iron, free T3, and body mass index. A significant negative correlation was found between Hb level and mean corpuscular volume, serum ferritin, and serum TSH. Being female, having high serum ferritin, lower mean free T3, and a high TSH were risk factors for anemia. The prevalence of severe anemia was significantly higher among patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. A high prevalence of anemia was found among studied diabetics. Anemia screening should be included in the routine assessment of patients with diabetes. A multidisciplinary approach involving endocrinologists, hematologists, and dietitians is recommended to ensure holistic care and address all aspects of the patient's health. Background: Despite the intended 50% reduction in anemia in women of reproductive age, this tendency has only worsened. Even though iron deficiency is the most prevalent cause of anemia, anemia and chronic illnesses like HIV are closely associated; in fact, 48.6% of people living with HIV who were 15 years of age or older had anemia. However, the burden of anemia among HIV-positive women in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries is not well documented. Therefore, the goal of our research was to investigate anemia and the factors that are linked to it in SSA women who had HIV infections., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using demographic and health survey datasets from 18 SSA countries. A total of 7823 weighted samples were included. STATA version 16 software was used for analysis. A multilevel logistic regression model was fitted. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% CI and a p-value < 0.05 was used to declare significantly associated factors., Result: The overall prevalence of anemia was found to be 45.1% [95% CI: 43.97-46.18%]. Of those 5.05%, 37.97%, and 56.97% were severely, moderately, and mildly anemic, respectively. Education level of primary [AOR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.89], secondary [AOR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.68, 0.98], and higher [AOR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.55, 0.99], as well as current contraceptive use [AOR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.63, 0.87] were negatively associated with anemia. While pregnancy [AOR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.17, 1.94], breast feeding [AOR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.17, 1.64], health insurance [AOR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.80], and menstruation within six weeks prior to data collection [AOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.20, 1.54] had a significant positive relation with anemia among HIV-infected women in SSA countries., Conclusion: Anemia is a serious public health problem among HIV-infected women in SSA countries. Pregnancy, breast feeding, health insurance, and menstruation within six weeks prior to data collection were significant risk factors. On the other education and current contraceptive use were significant protective factors for anemia among HIV-infected women in SSA countries. Background: Small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) births are topical issues due to their devastating effects on the life course and are also accountable for neonatal mortalities and long-term morbidities., Objective: We tested the hypothesis that abnormal haemoglobin levels in each trimester of pregnancy will increase the risk of SGA and LGA deliveries in Northern Ghana., Design: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from April to July 2020., Settings and Participants: 422 postpartum mothers who had delivered in the last 6-8 weeks before their interview dates were recruited through a systematic random sampling technique from five primary and public health facilities in Northern Ghana., Primary Measures: Using the INTERGROWTH-21st standard, SGA and LGA births were obtained. Haemoglobin levels from antenatal records were analysed to determine their effect on SGA and LGA births by employing multinomial logistic regression after adjusting for sociodemographic and obstetric factors at a significance level of α=0.05., Results: Prevalence of anaemia in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy was 63.5%, 71.3% and 45.3%, respectively, and that of polycythaemia in the corresponding trimesters of pregnancy was 5.9%, 3.6% and 1.7%. About 8.8% and 9.2% of the women delivered SGA and LGA babies, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, anaemic mothers in the third trimester of pregnancy had an increased risk of having SGA births (adjusted OR, aOR 5.56; 95% CI 1.65 to 48.1; p<0.001). Mothers with polycythaemia in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy were 93% (aOR 0.07; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.46; p=0.040), 85% (aOR 0.15; 95% CI 0.08 to 0.64; p<0.001) and 88% (aOR 0.12; 95% CI 0.07 to 0.15; p=0.001) protected from having SGA births, respectively. Interestingly, anaemia and polycythaemia across all trimesters of pregnancy were not statistically significant with LGA births., Conclusion: Anaemia during pregnancy increased from the first to the second trimester and subsequently decreased in the third trimester while polycythaemia consistently decreased from the first to the third trimester. LGA babies were more predominant compared with SGA babies. While anaemia in the third trimester of pregnancy increased the risk of SGA births, polycythaemia across the trimesters offered significant protection. Introduction: Currently, kidney disease is an increasing major health problem worldwide. It is expected to be the 5th ranked cause of death by 2040. If it is early detected, further complication caused by kidney disease will be minimized. An assessment of impaired glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) has potential aids in early identification and treatment of kidney disease. However, in hospital practice instead of using eGFR, direct measurement of serum creatinine level is used for assessing renal function. Hence, this study is aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of impaired glomerular filtration rate among admitted patients in Wolkite University Specialized Teaching Hospital (WKUSTH)., Objective: To assess the magnitude and associated factors of impaired glomerular filtration rate in WKUSTH, Ethiopia 2023., Method: Institutional based cross-sectional study with secondary data was conducted. 338 participants were selected by a convenient sampling technique. Epidata 3.1 version for data entry and SPSS version 20 for data analysis was used. Bivariate analysis was used to screen candidate variables for multivariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis a P-value < 0.05 were considered statistically significant., Results: The study enrolled 338 patients admitted to WUSTH. Seventy (20.7%) (95% CI: 16.6-25.4%) of them had impaired eGFR according to Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD-4). older age (AOR 3.38, 95% CI; 1.31, 8.71), hypertension (AOR 17.8, 95% CI; 7.75, 41.22), anemia (AOR 2.51, 95% CI; 1.11, 5.83) DM (AOR 11.2, 95% CI; 4.11, 30.73), and high BMI (AOR 7.56, 95% CI; 3.16, 18.08), were independently associated with impaired eGFR., Conclusions: The magnitude of impaired eGFR was prevalent among adult patients admitted to WKUSTH medical ward with different medical conditions. Old age, Hypertension, Diabetes, high body mass index, and Anemia were significantly associated with impaired eGFR both in CKD-EPI and MDRD-4 equation. Introduction: Anaemia remains a primary concern of public health in developing countries. Indigenous populations are a significant and frequently underreported group at risk for anaemia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of anaemia and identify its determinants in the Temiar sub-ethnic indigenous Orang Asli (OA) community in Peninsular Malaysia., Methodology: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 640 indigenous Temiar OA participants from a remote settlement in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia. Data was collected using face-to-face interviews with a standardised pretested questionnaire and through blood samples collected for haemoglobin (Hb) testing. Anaemia status was determined using the Hb level cut-off established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence of anaemia, while multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with anaemia., Results: The overall anaemia prevalence was 44.7% (286/640), and the prevalence rates of mild, moderate and severe anaemia were 42.7, 50.7 and 6.6%, respectively. Anaemia-specific prevalence varied significantly by age group ( p  < 0.001) and was highest in the ≤5 group for both moderate anaemia (43.4%) and severe (42.1%), followed by the 6-17 age group for mild anaemia (39.3%). The prevalence of anaemia was also highest among students (53.9%), with a significant difference observed between the three anaemia severity classifications ( p  = 0.002). In the multivariate logistic regression, only age groups of 6-17 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.38, p  < 0.001), 18-40 (aOR 0.18, p  < 0.001) and > 40 (aOR 0.25, p  < 0.001) were significantly associated with the lower odds of anaemia in the population., Conclusion: This study has highlighted the high prevalence of anaemia among indigenous OA in Peninsular Malaysia and revealed that younger children were positively associated with childhood anaemia. Background: Anemia is common and associated with increased morbidity among people with HIV (PWH). Classification of anemia using the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) can help investigate the underlying causative factors of anemia. We characterize anemia using MCV among PWH receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), and identify the risk factors for normocytic, macrocytic, and microcytic anemias., Methods: Including PWH with anemia (hemoglobin measure < 12.9 g/dL among men and < 11.9 g/dL among women) in the NA-ACCORD from 01/01/2007 to 12/31/2017, we estimated the annual distribution of normocytic (80-100 femtolitre (fL)), macrocytic (> 100 fL) or microcytic (< 80 fL) anemia based on the lowest hemoglobin within each year. Poisson regression models with robust variance and general estimating equations were used to estimate crude and adjusted prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals for risk factors for macrocytic (vs. normocytic) and microcytic (vs. normocytic) anemia stratified by sex., Results: Among 37,984 hemoglobin measurements that identified anemia in 14,590 PWH, 27,909 (74%) were normocytic, 4257 (11%) were microcytic, and 5818 (15%) were macrocytic. Of the anemic PWH included over the study period, 1910 (13%) experienced at least one measure of microcytic anemia and 3208 (22%) at least one measure of macrocytic anemia. Normocytic anemia was most common among both males and females, followed by microcytic among females and macrocytic among males. Over time, the proportion of anemic PWH who have macrocytosis decreased while microcytosis increased. Macrocytic (vs. normocytic) anemia is associated with increasing age and comorbidities. With increasing age, microcytic anemia decreased among females but not males. A greater proportion of PWH with normocytic anemia had CD4 counts ≤ 200 cells/mm 3 and had recently initiated ART., Conclusion: In anemic PWH, normocytic anemia was most common. Over time macrocytic anemia decreased, and microcytic anemia increased irrespective of sex. Normocytic anemia is often due to chronic disease and may explain the greater risk for normocytic anemia among those with lower CD4 counts or recent ART initiation. Background: Lower extremity peripheral arterial disease is a potentially lethal cardiovascular complication in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Anemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease among the hemodialysis population. However, whether blood hemoglobin concentration is associated with the risk of peripheral arterial disease progression in this population remains undetermined., Methods and Results: This is an extension of a 4-year multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study to 10 years. A total of 3504 Japanese patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis were recruited between 2006 and 2007. The primary exposure was blood hemoglobin concentration at baseline. The main outcome was the first-ever incidence of major adverse limb events (MALE), composed of endovascular treatment, bypass surgery, and amputation. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, Fine-Gray subdistribution hazards model, restricted cubic spline analysis, and restricted mean survival time analysis were used to determine the association of blood hemoglobin concentration with the incidence of MALE. During a median follow-up of 8.0 years, 257 patients experienced MALE. A Cox proportional hazards model showed that the risk of MALE in patients with blood hemoglobin concentrations <10.0 g/dL was significantly higher than in patients with concentrations of 11.0 to 11.9 g/dL, even after adjusting for confounding factors. In contrast, elevated hemoglobin concentration (≥12.0 g/dL) was not significantly associated with increased risk of MALE. Similar associations were observed when the Fine-Gray subdistribution regression model was used by setting all-cause mortality as the competing risk., Conclusions: A low blood hemoglobin concentration is an independent risk factor for peripheral arterial disease progression in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

Background: Dengue fever (DF) is a mosquito-borne illness with substantial economic and societal impact. Understanding laboratory trends of hospitalized Dominican Republic (DR) pediatric patients could help develop screening procedures in low-resourced settings. We sought to describe laboratory findings over time in DR children with DF and DF severity from 2018 to 2020. Methods: Clinical information was obtained prospectively from recruited children with DF. Complete blood count (CBC) laboratory measures were assessed across Days 1-10 of fever. Participants were classified as DF-negative and DF-positive and grouped by severity. We assessed associations of DF severity with demographics, clinical characteristics, and peripheral blood studies. Using linear mixed-models, we assessed if hematologic values/trajectories differed by DF status/severity. Results: A total of 597 of 1101 with a DF clinical diagnosis were serologically evaluated, and 574 (471 DF-positive) met inclusion criteria. In DF, platelet count and hemoglobin were higher on earlier days of fever ( p < = 0.0017). Eighty had severe DF. Severe DF risk was associated with thrombocytopenia, intraillness anemia, and leukocytosis, differing by fever day ( p < = 0.001). Conclusions: In a pediatric hospitalized DR cohort, we found marked anemia in late stages of severe DF, unlike the typically seen hemoconcentration. Background: Anaemia is a significant global health problem, especially, in developing nations like Ethiopia. Despite increasing rates over the past two decades, there is limited research on the specific prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women in the country., Objective: To identify hotspot areas of anaemia-associated factors among pregnant women in Ethiopia., Study Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: Ethiopian demographic study from 2005 to 2016., Participants: This study analysed 3350 pregnant women., Primary and Secondary Outcome Measures: Hotspot area of anaemia among pregnant women, trend of anaemia and associated factors., Results: The prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women has shown significant fluctuations over the years. Between 2005 and 2011, there was a notable decrease from 30.9% to 21.5% while the prevalence increased from 21.5% in 2011 to 29.58% in 2016. The identified determinants of anaemia among pregnant women were female-headed household, belonging to the highest wealth quintile, being in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, being a working woman and residing in the Somalia region. Hotspot areas, where the prevalence of anaemia was particularly high, were identified in Somalia, Dire Dawa, Afar and Harari regions., Conclusion: Anaemia during pregnancy is a major public health concern in Ethiopia, with a concerning increase between 2011 and 2016. Hotspot areas like Somali, Dire Dawa, Afar and Harari are particularly affected. Shockingly, nearly one in three pregnant women in Ethiopia suffer from anaemia. To address this issue effectively, targeted interventions prioritising economically disadvantaged households and pregnant women in their second and third trimesters are crucial. Monitoring spatial patterns and contributing factors is vital to develop tailored interventions and improve maternal health outcomes in these high-risk areas. Objective: To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of anemia children aged 0-6 years in Shannan city, Xizang Autonomous Region. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to measure hemoglobin of 12 405 children aged 0-6 years in 12 counties (districts) of Shannan city, Xizang Autonomous Region and basic information including gender, age, ethnicity, address, local altitude, urban area, agricultural and pastoral areas, etc were collected. According to the altitude of the surveyed children's place of residence, anemia in children under the plain standard and the prevalence of anemia after adjusting for altitude were reported, and the influencing factors of anemia in these children were analyzed by Logistic regression methods. Results: Among the 12 405 children, 6 383 (51.46%) were males, 6 022 (48.54%) were females, 462 (3.72%) were newborns, 68 (0.55%) were 1 month old children, 153 (1.23%) were 4-<6 months old children, and 11 722 (94.49%) were 6 months to 6 years old children. The prevalence of anemia in children aged 0-6 years in Shannan city before altitude correction was 15.50%(1 923/12 405), and it was 57.84% (7 175/12 405) after altitude correction. The hemoglobin level in the children was (131±20) g/L. Univariate analysis showed that the anemia rate of males was higher than that of females (59.17% (3 777/6 383) vs. 56.43% (3 398/6 022), P <0.05), the anemia rate of Tibetan children was higher than that of children of other ethnic groups (58.21% (6 992/12 011) vs. 46.45% (183/394), P <0.05), the anemia rate of children in agricultural and pastoral areas was higher than that of urban children (58.75% (6 212/10 574) vs .(52.59% 963/1 831), P <0.05), and the anemia rate of children in higher-altitude areas was higher than that of children in high-altitude areas (67.98% (2 773/4 079) vs .52.87% (4 402/8 326), P <0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that girls ( OR =0.89, 95% CI 0.83-0.96), children of other ethnic groups ( OR =0.72, 95% CI 0.58-0.89), children aged 4-<6 months ( OR =0.40, 95% CI 0.24-0.67) and children aged 6 months to 6 years ( OR =0.59, 95% CI 0.43-0.82) were protective factors, and children who lived in agricultural and pastoral areas ( OR =1.15, 95% CI 1.04-1.28) and children living at altitudes higher than 4 000 m areas ( OR =1.88, 95% CI 1.73-2.04) were independent risk factors for the occurrence of anemia. Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in children aged 0-6 years in Shannan city was still relatively high. It might be affected by factors such as sex, ethnicity, age of the children, place of residence and altitude where the children lived.

Introduction: Approximately 7000 total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgeries occur in Ireland each year. A number of preoperative factors have been identified that increase the risk of postoperative blood transfusion after THA, including anaemia. The ability to identify patients at risk may allow preoperative management strategies to reduce blood transfusions. Data from Irish orthopaedic patients is currently lacking., Aim: To investigate if preoperative anaemia and other factors are associated with postoperative blood transfusions in patients who undergo THA., Methods: A retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent THA in 2019 in SIVUH, Cork, using medical chart review., Results: In total, 350 charts met the inclusion criteria, with 291 charts reviewed. 8.9% of the patients who underwent THA had preoperative anaemia. Among these, 19.2% had a postoperative blood transfusion, compared to 1.5% of patients who were not anaemic preoperatively. The odds of receiving a blood transfusion was 15.5 times greater in the preoperative anaemia group compared to the non-anaemic group. Increasing age and higher ASA scores were associated with preoperative anaemia and postoperative blood transfusions. Length of stay was increased by 2.2 days (p < 0.00016) if blood transfusion was required., Conclusion: Preoperative anaemia was common in an Irish orthopaedic population undergoing THA. Preoperative anaemia predisposes patients to the greatest increased risk of postoperative blood transfusions. The other factors associated with the need for postoperative transfusion were ASA grade 3 or more and age greater than 65 years. Background: Although anemia is common in patients with myocardial infarction (MI), management remains controversial. We quantified the association of anemia with in-hospital outcomes and resource utilization in patients admitted with MI using a large national database., Methods: All hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis code for acute MI in the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) between 2014 and 2018 were identified. Among these hospitalizations, patients with anemia were identified using a secondary diagnosis code. Data on demographic and clinical variables were collected. Outcomes of interest included in-hospital adverse events, length of stay (LOS), and total cost. Multivariable logistic regression and generalized linear models were used to evaluate the relationship between anemia and outcomes., Results: Among 1,113,181 MI hospitalizations, 254,816 (22.8%) included concomitant anemia. Anemic patients were older and more likely to be women. After adjustment for demographics and comorbidities, anemia was associated with higher mortality (7.1 vs. 4.3%; odds ratio 1.09; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-1.12, p < 0.001). Anemia was also associated with a mean of 2.71 days longer LOS (average marginal effects [AME] 2.71; 95% CI 2.68-2.73, p < 0.05), and $ 9703 mean higher total costs (AME $9703, 95% CI $9577-$9829, p < 0.05). Anemic patients who received blood transfusions had higher mortality as compared with those who did not (8.2% vs. 7.0, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: In MI patients, anemia was associated with higher in-hospital mortality, adverse events, total cost, and length of stay. Study Objective: To determine the sex-specific associations between postoperative haemoglobin and mortality or complications reflecting ischaemia or inadequate oxygen supply after major noncardiac surgery., Design: A retrospective cohort study with prospective validation., Setting: A large university hospital health system in China., Patients: Men and women undergoing elective major noncardiac surgery., Interventions and Measurements: The primary exposure was nadir haemoglobin within 48 h after surgery. The outcome of interest was a composite of postoperative mortality or ischaemic events including myocardial injury, acute kidney injury and stroke within hospitalisation., Main Results: The study included 26,049 patients (15,757 men and 10,292 women). Low postoperative haemoglobin was a strong predictor of the composite outcome in both sexes, with the risk progressively increasing as the nadir haemoglobin concentration dropped below 130 g l -1 in men and 120 g l -1 in women (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.43, 95% CI 1.37-1.50 in men, and OR 1.45, 95% CI 1.35-1.55 in women, per 10 g l -1 decrease in postoperative nadir haemoglobin). Above these sex-specific thresholds, the change of nadir haemoglobin was no longer associated with odds of the composite outcome in either men or women. There was no significant interaction between patient sex and the association between postoperative haemoglobin and the composite outcome (Pinteraction = 0.673). This study assessed the prevalence of iron overload in infants born to Rh isoimmunized mothers. Infants born to Rh isoimmunized mothers with Indirect Coomb's Test (ICT) titers ≥1:16 were prospectively enrolled and followed until 3 mo. Hemoglobin and serum ferritin were estimated at birth and 3 mo of age. The outcomes were the incidence of iron overload (at birth and 3 mo), anemia, and the need for transfusions in the first 3 mo. Seventy-four infants were enrolled, nearly half receiving intrauterine transfusion (IUT). Sixty (82.2%) had hyperferritinemia at birth. The median (1 st , 3 rd quartile) ferritin levels were 456 (321, 631) μg/L. Infants who received IUTs had significantly higher serum ferritin levels at birth. Fifty-one (76.1%) infants had hyperferritinemia at 3 mo. Over three months of follow-up, 53 (71.6%) infants had anemia, of which 33 (48.5%) required packed red blood cells (PRBC) transfusion. Study Objective: Evidence for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion thresholds in the intraoperative setting is limited, and current perioperative recommendations may not correspond with individual intraoperative physiological demands. Hemodynamics relevant for the decision to transfuse may include peripheral perfusion index (PPI). The objective of this prospective study was to assess the associations of PPI and hemoglobin levels with the risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality., Design: Multicenter cohort study., Setting: Bispebjerg and Hvidovre University Hospitals, Copenhagen, Denmark., Patients: We included 741 patients who underwent acute high risk abdominal surgery or hip fracture surgery., Interventions: No interventions were carried out., Measurements: Principal values collected included measurements of peripheral perfusion index and hemoglobin values., Methods: The study was conducted using prospectively obtained data on adults who underwent emergency high-risk surgery. Subjects were categorized into high vs. low subgroups stratified by pre-defined PPI levels (PPI: > 1.5 vs. < 1.5) and Hb levels (Hb: > 9.7 g/dL vs. < 9.7 g/dL). The study assessed mortality and severe postoperative complications within 90 days., Main Results: We included 741 patients. 90-day mortality was 21% (n = 154), frequency of severe postoperative complications was 31% (n = 231). Patients with both low PPI and low Hb had the highest adjusted odds ratio for both 90-day severe postoperative complications (2.95, [1.62-5.45]) and 90-day mortality (3.13, [1.45-7.11]). A comparison of patients with low PPI and low Hb to those with high PPI and low Hb detected significantly higher 90-day mortality risk in the low PPI and low Hb group (OR 8.6, [1.57-162.10])., Conclusion: High PPI in acute surgical patients who also presents with anemia was associated with a significantly better outcome when compared with patients with both low PPI and anemia. A common disease with significant impacts on health and quality of life, anemia is particularly prevalent in women of reproductive age due to blood losses during menstruation and pregnancy. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) was analyzed to compare trends in prevalence of anemia in women aged 15-49 among countries and over time with the goal of identifying regions both successful and in need of assistance in combatting anemia. Worldwide from 2000 to 2013 the prevalence of anemia among women aged 15-49 decreased, and then increased from 2013 to 2019; severe anemia decreased throughout the world from 2000 to 2019. Throughout all years, African countries had the highest prevalence of anemia and severe anemia while American and European countries had the lowest. With each decrease in human development index (HDI) category (very high to high, etc.) there was a significant increase in prevalence of total anemia (P < 0.001 for all). This data suggests that although the prevalence of anemia among reproductive age women has decreased over time there is still much work remaining, particularly in low HDI countries. Objectives: Anemia is a common condition in long-distance runners (LDRs). Recently, not only iron deficiency (ID) but also energy deficiency has been considered as a risk factor for anemia in athletes but no evidence has yet been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anemia and ID and the influence of body mass index (BMI) on anemia in high-school LDRs., Methods: The participants were 406 male and 235 female elite Japanese LDRs who competed in the All-Japan High-School Ekiden Championship 2019. They submitted their anthropometric data and results of a blood test within five days after the competition. The prevalence of anemia and ID and the influence of BMI on anemia were assessed retrospectively., Results: Mean hemoglobin concentrations (Hb) were 14.8 ± 0.9 g/dl in males and 13.2 ± 0.9 g/dl in females. The prevalence of anemia (Hb < 14 g/dl in males and < 12 g/dl in females) was significantly higher in males (16.3%) than females (6.4%), but males also showed higher prevalence of non-iron deficiency anemia (NIDA) than females (11.6% and 3.0%, respectively). No significant gender difference was found in the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) (4.7% in males and 3.4% in females). ID (serum ferritin level < 25 ng/ml) was significantly more prevalent in females (37.4%) than males (18.5%). A binary logistic regression analysis revealed that low BMI was a contributor to anemia in females (odds ratios: 0.577 (95% CI: 0.369-0.901), p  = 0.012)., Conclusion: In Japanese high-school LDRs, one in six males was anemic, but most males did not have ID. Conversely, one-third of females were diagnosed with ID. Lower BMI was identified as a risk for anemia in females, suggesting that leanness may also lead to anemia in females.

Purpose: This study utilized data mining and machine learning (ML) techniques to identify new patterns and classifications of the associations between nutrient intake and anemia among university students., Methods: We employed K-means clustering analysis algorithm and Decision Tree (DT) technique to identify the association between anemia and vitamin and mineral intakes. We normalized and balanced the data based on anemia weighted clusters for improving ML models' accuracy. In addition, t-tests and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were performed to identify significant differences between the clusters. We evaluated the models on a balanced dataset of 755 female participants from the Hebron district in Palestine., Results: Our study found that 34.8% of the participants were anemic. The intake of various micronutrients (i.e., folate, Vit A, B5, B6, B12, C, E, Ca, Fe, and Mg) was below RDA/AI values, which indicated an overall unbalanced malnutrition in the present cohort. Anemia was significantly associated with intakes of energy, protein, fat, Vit B1, B5, B6, C, Mg, Cu and Zn. On the other hand, intakes of protein, Vit B2, B5, B6, C, E, choline, folate, phosphorus, Mn and Zn were significantly lower in anemic than in non-anemic subjects. DT classification models for vitamins and minerals (accuracy rate: 82.1%) identified an inverse association between intakes of Vit B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, E, folate, Zn, Mg, Fe and Mn and prevalence of anemia., Conclusions: Besides the nutrients commonly known to be linked to anemia-like folate, Vit B6, C, B12, or Fe-the cluster analyses in the present cohort of young female university students have also found choline, Vit E, B2, Zn, Mg, Mn, and phosphorus as additional nutrients that might relate to the development of anemia. Objective: To characterize the evaluation and outcomes of children referred to pediatric hematology for normocytic anemia., Study Design: Retrospective cohort study of children aged 0-21 years referred to a tertiary pediatric hematology clinic for normocytic anemia from 2019 through 2021. Normocytic anemia was defined as a low hemoglobin and normal mean corpuscular volume, per the referring laboratory reference range., Results: Two-hundred seventy-one patients (48% female, median age 5.4 years) were included. The most common hematologic diagnoses included iron deficiency (n = 90, 33%), statistical anemia (n = 64, 24%), transient marrow suppression (n = 36, 13%), and transient erythroblastopenia of childhood (TEC, n = 19, 7%). There were 17 (6%) patients in whom anemia was thought to be secondary to a nonhematologic disorder and therefore were referred to another pediatric specialty. Sixteen patients (6%) had anemia which spontaneously resolved without an underlying etiology being identified. Aside from iron deficient patients, 35 (13%) had diagnoses requiring ongoing hematology care including transient erythroblastopenia of childhood, hemolytic anemia, Diamond Blackfan Anemia, and abnormal beta globin traits. Two-hundred fifty-one patients (93%) were discharged from hematology care after a median of 25 days (range 0-2124 days)., Conclusion: Pediatric patients with normocytic anemia have diverse underlying etiologies with iron deficiency being most common. Background: Anemia is common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), causing significant health issues and social burdens. Exposure to household air pollution from using biomass fuels for cooking and heating has been associated with anemia, but the exposure-response association has not been studied., Objectives: We evaluated the associations between personal exposure to air pollution and both hemoglobin levels and anemia prevalence among pregnant women in a multi-country randomized controlled trial., Methods: We studied 3,163 pregnant women aged 18-35 years with 9-20 weeks of gestation, recruited as part of the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) randomized controlled trial in Guatemala, India, Peru, and Rwanda. We assessed 24-hour personal exposures to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), black carbon (BC), and carbon monoxide (CO), and measured hemoglobin levels at baseline (15 ± 3 weeks gestation). Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the associations of measured pollutants with hemoglobin levels and anemia prevalence, adjusting for confounding., Results: Single-pollutant models showed associations of CO with higher hemoglobin levels and lower anemia prevalence. Bipollutant models involving CO and PM 2.5 also revealed that an interquartile range (IQR) increase in CO concentrations (2.26 ppm) was associated with higher hemoglobin levels [β = 0.04; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.01, 0.07], and a lower odds of anemia prevalence [odds ratios (OR) = 0.90; 95 % CI: 0.83, 0.98]. PM 2.5 was inversely related to hemoglobin and positively associated with anemia, but results were not statistically significant at the 0.05 alpha level. County-specific results showed that 3 of 4 countries showed a similar association between CO and hemoglobin. Background: Anemia is a common comorbidity in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), particularly in older adults. However, there is a lack of data on the prevalence and the characteristics of anemia in this population in Spain., Objective: To describe the prevalence and the characteristics of anemia in patients with DM aged 50 or older (PDM50) in a healthcare district in the province of Cádiz., Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted that included outpatient's laboratory tests (OLT) performed over 30 months at PDM50., Results: The prevalence of anemia was 29.9% (95% CI: 28.7%-31.1%), predominating in women (33.3% vs 26.7%; P < 0.01), in older people stratified by decades (61.7% in 9th decade vs 12% in 5th decade; P < 0.01), and in those with kidney disease (44.7% vs 28%; P < 0.01). Most cases were mild (68.3%), normocytic (78.7%), and hypochromic (52%). Similarly, moderate-to-severe anemia was more frequent in women (39% vs 23%), their prevalence increased with age (45% in the 9th decade vs 24% in the 5th decade), and with the progression of kidney damage, either measured by a decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) (49% in G4 vs 25% in G1), or the presence of albuminuria (P < 0.01). Background: The health of India's children has improved over the past thirty years. Rates of morbidity and anthropometric failure have decreased. What remains unknown, however, is how those patterns have changed when examined by socioeconomic status. We examine changes in 11 indicators of child health by household wealth and maternal education between 1993 and 2021 to fill this critical gap in knowledge. Doing so could lead to policies that better target the most vulnerable children., Methods: We used data from five rounds of India's National Family Health Survey conducted in 1993, 1999, 2006, 2016, and 2021 for this repeated cross-sectional analysis. We studied mother-reported cases of acute respiratory illness and diarrhea, hemoglobin measurements for anemia, and height and weight measurements for anthropometric failure. We examined how the prevalence rates of each outcome changed between 1993 and 2021 by household wealth and maternal education. We repeated this analysis for urban and rural communities.  RESULTS: The socioeconomic gradient in 11 indicators of child health flattened between 1993 and 2021. This was in large part due to large reductions in the prevalence among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups. For most outcomes, the largest reductions occurred before 2016. Yet as of 2021, except for mild anemia, outcome prevalence remained the highest among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups. Furthermore, we show that increases in the prevalence of stunting and wasting between 2016 and 2021 are largely driven by increases in the severe forms of these outcomes among children in the highest socioeconomic groups. This finding underscores the importance of examining child health outcomes by severity., Conclusions: Despite substantial reductions in the socioeconomic gradient in 11 indicators of child health between 1993 and 2021, outcome prevalence remained the highest among children in the lowest socioeconomic groups in most cases. Background: Anemia prevalence is high in countries where high proportion of the population lives at high altitude (HA) due perhaps to the unsuitability hemoglobin correction factor proposed by the WHO. The present study has been designed to evaluate a new approach to establish thresholds of hemoglobin (Hb) when defining anemia at HA., Materials & Methods: Cross-sectional study evaluating 217 women aged 18 to 75 years-old, residents of 2 cities at low altitude (LA) (130 and 150 meters) and 2 at HA (3800 and 4300 meters). Hb, pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2), arterial oxygen content (CaO2), and inflammatory markers were measured. Three definitions of anemia diagnoses were used: uncorrected Hb, WHO-corrected Hb, and Silubonde's criteria based on ferritin as a gold standard. STATA v18.0 was use for data analysis, p<0.05 indicated significant difference., Results: HA residents present higher Hb values than at LA. Likewise, the highest area under the curve (AUC) ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) was observed for uncorrected Hb (AUC = 0.8595; CI95% 0.858-0.86) for the diagnosis of anemia using serum ferritin as the gold standard. Anemia prevalence was higher when using WHO-corrected Hb, 27%, and Silubonde's criteria, 41% (Hb cut-off of 11.10, 12.73, 15.80 and 16.60 g/dl for altitudes of 130, 150, 3800 and 4300 meters, respectively), than using uncorrected Hb to define anemia (7.7%). Serum Ferritin and CaO2 values are lower only in the group with anemia defined with uncorrected Hb than in the groups of anemia using the WHO-corrected Hb or the Silubonde´s criteria., Conclusions: The correction factor of hemoglobin for altitude of residence overestimates the prevalence of anemia in adult women. Likewise, CaO2 could be a potential marker to determine the transport of oxygen in LA and HA populations. Addressing environmental factors has recently been recommended to curb the growing trend of anemia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) generated by dust storms were concentrated in place with a high prevalence of anemia. In a multicounty, multicenter study, we analyzed the association between anemia and life-course averaged exposure to dust PM 2.5 among children aged <5 years based on 0.65 million records from 47 LMICs. In the fully adjusted mixed effects model, each 10 μg/m 3 increase in life-course averaged exposure to dust PM 2.5 was associated with a 9.3% increase in the odds of anemia. The estimated exposure-response association was nonlinear, with a greater effect of dust PM 2.5 exposure seen at low concentrations. Applying this association, we found that, in 2017, among all children aged <5 years in the 125 LMICs, dust PM 2.5 contributed to 37.98 million cases of anemia. Results indicated that dust PM 2.5 contributed a heavier burden than all of the well-identified risk factors did, except for iron deficiency. Our study revealed that long-term exposure to dust PM 2.5 can be a novel risk factor, pronouncedly contributed to the burden of child anemia in LMICs, affected by land degradations or arid climate.

Background: Hypertension and anemia are major health problems globally. However, data regarding the association between hypertension and hemoglobin/anemia among adults are few and controversial. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the associations between hemoglobin/anemia and hypertension among Sudanese adults., Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Northern Sudan from September to December 2022. The participants' sociodemographic characteristics were assessed using a questionnaire. Standardized procedures measured participants' weight, height, body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin, and hypertension. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the association between anemia and hypertension., Results: Three hundred eighty-four adults were enrolled; 195 (50.8%) and 189 (49.2%) were males and females, respectively. The median interquartile age of the enrolled adults of age, BMI, and hemoglobin level was 45.0 (33.0‒55.8) years, 26.6 (22.6‒30.6) kg/m 2 , and 13.4 (12.4‒14.4) g/dl, respectively. Of 384 adults, 216 (56.3%) had hypertension, and 148 (38.5%) were newly diagnosed hypertensive. Eighty-six adults (22.4%) had anemia. In univariate analysis, while increasing age, being female, being unmarried, having a positive family history of hypertension, and increasing BMI were positively associated with hypertension, anemia was inversely associated with hypertension. Education, occupation, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption were not associated with hypertension. In multivariate analysis, age (adjusted odd ratio [AOR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03‒1.07), BMI (AOR= 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03‒1.12) were inversely associated with hypertension, being female (AOR = 2.92, 95% CI = 1.43‒5.94), positive family history of hypertension (AOR= 1.73, 95% CI = 1.09‒2.75), and hemoglobin level (AOR= 1.34, 95% CI = 1.12‒1.61) were associated with hypertension. Anemia (AOR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.34‒0.99) was inversely associated with hypertension., Conclusion: Both anemia and hypertension are major public health problems in Northern Sudan. Background: Baseline anemia is associated with poor intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcomes. However, underlying drivers for anemia and whether anemia development after ICH impacts clinical outcomes are unknown. We hypothesized that inflammation drives anemia development after ICH and assessed their relationship to outcomes., Methods and Results: Patients with serial hemoglobin and iron biomarker concentrations from the HIDEF (High-Dose Deferoxamine in Intracerebral Hemorrhage) trial were analyzed. Adjusted linear mixed models assessed laboratory changes over time. Of 42 patients, significant decrements in hemoglobin occurred with anemia increasing from 19% to 45% by day 5. Anemia of inflammation iron biomarker criteria was met in 88%. A separate cohort of 521 patients with ICH with more granular serial hemoglobin and long-term neurological outcome data was also investigated. Separate regression models assessed whether (1) systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) scores related to hemoglobin changes over time and (2) hemoglobin changes related to poor 90-day outcome. In this cohort, anemia prevalence increased from 30% to 71% within 2 days of admission yet persisted beyond this time. Elevated systemic inflammatory response syndrome was associated with greater hemoglobin decrements over time (adjusted parameter estimate: -0.27 [95% CI, -0.37 to -0.17]) and greater hemoglobin decrements were associated with poor outcomes (adjusted odds ratio per 1 g/dL increase, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.62-0.93]) independent to inflammation and ICH severity., Conclusions: We identified novel findings that acute anemia development after ICH is common, rapid, and related to inflammation. Background: Asymptomatic malaria in pregnancy (AMiP) is a daunting public health problem with multifaceted adverse outcomes for mothers, fetuses, newborns and beyond. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of AMiP and anaemia in Majang Zone, Gambella, Southwest Ethiopia., Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 425 pregnant women attending the antenatal care (ANC) clinics of five health facilities in the Majang Zone from November 2022 to February 2023. Sociodemographic, obstetric, and anti-malarial intervention data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. A capillary blood specimen was collected to diagnose malaria and anaemia as well as determine the blood group. Malaria was diagnosed by rapid diagnostic test (RDT), microscopy, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Statistical analyses were done by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26.0. The association between dependent and independent variables was assessed by multivariable binary logistic regression, considering P < 0.05 statistically significant. The magnitude of associations was quantified with the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) along with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: The overall prevalence of AMiP was 15.3% (95% CI 12.1, 18.9). It was 11.3% (95% CI 8.4, 14.7) by RDT, 11.8% (95% CI 8.9, 15.2) by microscopy and 17.6% (95% CI 11.7, 24.9) by qPCR. Plasmodium falciparum, moderate parasitaemia and submicroscopic infection accounted for 55.4% of the AMiP prevalence, 50.8% of the parasite density, and 41.6% of the qPCR-positive AMiP, respectively. Nearly 32.3% of pregnant women with AMiP carried gametocytes. Risk factors of AMiP were: not utilizing insecticide-treated net (ITN) within the previous week (AOR: 9.43 95% CI 1.57, 56.62), having a history of malaria within the previous year (AOR: 2.26 95% CI 1.16, 4.42), lack of indoor residual spraying (IRS) within the previous year (AOR: 3.00 95% CI 1.50, 6.00), and ANC contact below two rounds (AOR: 4.28 95% CI 2.06, 8.87). The prevalence of anaemia was 27.7% (95% CI 23.6, 32.1), and it was higher among AMiP-positives (56.9%) than the negatives (22.5%) (P: 000)., Conclusion: The prevalence of AMiP and anaemia was high, and remained as a critical public health problem in the study area. Introduction: Blood transfusions are associated with an increased risk of complications after lumbar fusion, and current anemia hemoglobin thresholds are not surgery specific. We aimed to calculate single-level lumbar fusion-specific preoperative hemoglobin strata that observe the likelihood of 90-day transfusion and evaluate whether these strata are associated with increased risk of 90-day complications and 2-year infections., Methods: A national database identified patients undergoing primary single-level lumbar fusion with preoperative hemoglobin values (g/dL). Stratum-specific likelihood ratio analysis calculated sex-based hemoglobin strata associated with the risk of 90-day transfusion. Incidence and risk of 90-day major complications and 2-year infections were observed between strata., Results: Three female (hemoglobin strata, likelihood ratio [<10.9, 2.41; 11.0 to 12.4, 1.35; 12.5 to 17.0, 0.78]) and male (<11.9, 2.95; 12.0 to 13.4, 1.46; 13.5 to 13.9, 0.71) strata were associated with varying likelihood of 90-day blood transfusion. Increased 90-day complication risk was associated with two female strata (hemoglobin strata, relative risk [11.0 to 12.4, 1.52; <10.9, 3.40]) and one male stratum (<11.9, 2.02). Increased 2-year infection risk was associated with one female (<10.9, 3.67) and male stratum (<11.9, 2.11)., Conclusion: Stratum-specific likelihood ratio analysis established sex-based single-level lumbar fusion-specific hemoglobin strata that observe the likelihood of 90-day transfusion and the risk of 90-day major complications and 2-year infections. Anaemia is a major public health concern in developing countries, particularly among children, adolescents, and women of reproductive age. The study aimed to assess the anaemia status among adolescent girls, pregnant, and lactating women with their contributing factors in the southern rural regions of Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 adolescent girls, 375 pregnant, and 375 lactating women using a multistage cluster-random sampling technique. Anaemia was measured through haemoglobin concentration in blood capillaries collected with a Hemocue 301 machine. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with anaemia. The average age of pregnant and lactating women was 24 years and 15.2 years for girls. Overall, the prevalence of anaemia was 50% among pregnant women, 46% among lactating women, and 38% among adolescent girls. The risk of anaemia among adolescent girls was higher among non-Muslim (aOR = 2.13, 95%CI:1.05-4.31), belonged to families having >5 members (aOR = 2.24, 95%CI:1.16-4.31) while exposure to media reduced their risk (aOR = 0.33, 95%CI:0.15-0.74). Pregnant women who consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands after toilet, and received ≥4 ANC visits had a lower likelihood of developing anaemia. Lactating women who were employed, consumed a diversified diet, washed their hands before preparing food, and after toilet, had been exposed to media, received ≥4 ANC visits, and consumed ≥90 IFA, had a lower risk of developing anaemia. However, anaemia was more likely to be associated with lactating women who were non-Muslim (aOR = 3.75; 95%CI:1.26-11.22). In low- and middle-income countries, indoor air pollution (IAP) is a serious public health concern, especially for women and children who cook with solid fuels. IAP exposure has been linked to a number of medical conditions, including pneumonia, ischemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and anaemia. Around 500 million women of reproductive age (WRA) suffer from anaemia globally, with an estimated 190 million cases in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study, which is based on prior research, investigates the relationship between IAP exposure and anaemia among WRA in Ghana. A diverse sample of 2,406 WRA living in Ghana were interviewed, of which 58.06% were anaemic and used high-pollutant fuels for cooking. Age, place of residence, region, education level, religion, ethnicity, wealth index, type of drinking water, type of toilet facility, and type of cooking fuels were all found to be significantly linked with anaemic state by bivariate analysis. Type of cooking fuels utilized, age, region of residence, and the type of residence were shown to be significant predictors of anaemia status using sequential binary logit regression models. The results emphasise the critical need for efforts to promote the usage of clean cooking fuel in an attempt to lower anaemia prevalence in Ghana. To reduce dependency on solid fuels for cooking, initiatives should promote the use of cleaner cooking fuels and enhance the socioeconomic status of households. These interventions could have significant public health effects by reducing the burden of anaemia and improving maternal and child health outcomes due to the prevalence of anaemia among WRA. Aim: To determine biomarkers of anemia of chronic disease (ACD) in patients with glomerulonephritis (GN) in the early stages of CKD, to assess their role as risk factors for cardiovascular complications (CVС)., Materials and Methods: Seventy nine patients with GN were studied, among them: 40 with primary сhronic GN (CGN), 39 with secondary forms:19 - GN with ANCA-associated systemic vasculitis, 20 - GN with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at early (all I-II) CKD stages. In all patients, the level of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), hepcidin, interferon γ, and the circulating form of protein Klotho (s-Klotho) were determined. When a relative iron deficiency was detected [transferrin iron saturation coefficient (TSAT) <20%], patients were administered parenterally iron [III] sucrose hydroxide complex (Venofer)., Results: The frequency of anemia among patients with systemic diseases is 3.2 times higher than among patients with primary CGN. Patients with anemia (group I; n =43) had higher rates of daily proteinuria ( p< 0.001), systolic blood pressure ( p< 0.05), serum levels of interferon γ ( p< 0.001) and hepcidin ( p< 0.001) and lower values of eGFR ( p< 0.05) than patients without anemia (group II; n =36). A strong inverse correlation was noted between the level of hepcidin and the content of iron in serum (r=-0.856; p< 0.001), between the level of hemoglobin and the level of interferon γ (r=-0.447; p< 0.05), hepcidin (r=-0.459; p< 0.05) and CRP (r=-0.453; p< 0.05). A significant inverse correlation was found between the level of hemoglobin and CVC risk factors - the value of systolic blood pressure (r=-0.512; p< 0.05) and the mass index of the left ventricular myocardium (r=-0.619; p< 0.01). At the same time, the contribution of 2 from 6 analyzed factors, hepcidin and eGFR, to the development of ACD was 92.5%, of which 86.6% accounted for hepcidin. A strong direct correlation was also found between a decrease in hemoglobin level and a decrease in the level of s-Klotho protein (r=0.645; p< 0.001), a decrease in the level of s-Klotho and an increase in the level of serum hepcidin (r=-0.541; p< 0.05). The leading value of anemia (beta -0,29; p= 0,04) and depression of the s-Klotho level (beta -0,44; p= 0,02) as independent cardiovascular risk factors in this group of patients was confirmed by multivariate analysis. In patients with identified deficiency of iron ( n =40), after 3-4 weeks of intravenous administration of venofer, the target level of hemoglobin (Нb>120 g/l) and transferrin saturation with iron (TSAT>20%) were achieved., Conclusion: Among the biomarkers of ACD in patients with immunoinflammatory diseases of the kidneys (primary and secondary СGN), the increase in the serum level of hepcidin is greatest importance. The concomitant to anemia decrease in s-Klotho is a leading risk factor for CVС in CKD. Early correction of ACD with iron supplements makes it possible to achieve target levels of Hb and TSAT and have subsequently a positive effect on the production of s-Klotho and the severity of left ventricular hypertrophia.

Background: Anaemia during pregnancy is common worldwide. In Australia, approximately 17% of non-pregnant women of reproductive age have anaemia, increasing to a rate of 25% in pregnant women. This study sought to determine the rate of screening for anaemia in pregnancy in regional New South Wales, and to determine whether screening and treatment protocols followed the recommended guidelines., Methods: This retrospective study reviewed antenatal and postnatal (48 h) data of women (n = 150) who had a live birth at Bathurst Hospital between 01/01/2020 and 30/04/2020. Demographic data, risk factors for anaemia in pregnancy, antenatal bloods, treatments provided in trimesters one (T1), two (T2) and three (T3), and postpartum complications were recorded. These were compared to the Australian Red Cross Guidelines (ARCG) using descriptive statistics., Results: Of the women with screening data available (n = 103), they were mostly aged 20-35yrs (79.6%), 23.3% were obese, 97.1% were iron deficient, 17% were anaemic and only a few (5.3%) completed the full pregnancy screening as recommended by the ARCG while a majority completed only partial screenings specifically Hb levels in T1 (56.7%), T2 (44.7%) and T3 (36.6%). Compliance to oral iron was largely undocumented, but constipation was a common side effect among the women. IV iron was administered in 14.0% of women, approximately 1.75x higher than the recommended rate., Conclusions: This study provided useful information about compliance to screening and treatment guidelines for anaemia in pregnancy. We identified the need for improved documentation and communication between various health providers to ensure adequate antenatal care to prevent maternal complications during pregnancy. Background: Anemia during pregnancy is a public health problem and is related to negative birth outcomes, especially in developing countries. The main aim of this study was to assess predictors of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia., Methods: Unmatched case-control study design was employed among 352 individuals. A face-to-face interview was used to gather data, and each pregnant woman's antenatal care follow-up record cards were reviewed in addition to the interview. EpiData version 3.1 and IBM SPSS version 26 was used for data entry and analysis, respectively. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were conducted to identify predictors of anemia, a p-value of <0.05 was considered a statistically significant association., Result: The common determinants for anemia in pregnant mothers were: rural residency (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.14-4.8), no formal education (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI: 1.94-9.9), inter-pregnancy interval (AOR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.24-5.8), and mid-upper arm circumference (AOR = 5.0, 95% CI: 2.0-12.7)., Conclusion: In this study, the identified determinant factors for anemia were: rural residency, maternal educational status, inter-pregnancy-interval, and mid-upper arm circumference. Therefore, providing health education and promotion for pregnant women regarding anemia by focusing on rural residents and counseling to lengthen their birth spacing is an important task. Moreover, counseling on taking iron supplementation as suggested and consuming a diet rich in iron during antenatal care will be recommended., (© The Author(s) 2024. Surgical patients are often transfused to manage bleeding and anemia. Best practices for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion administration in patient having noncardiac surgery remains controversial and a robust evaluation and description of perioperative transfusion practices is lacking. We characterized perioperative hemoglobin concentrations and transfusion practices from the prospective VISION cohort which included 39,222 patients aged ≥45 years who had inpatient noncardiac surgery. Variations in transfusion practices were analyzed using hierarchical mixed models, and associations with mortality and complications were evaluated using a nested frailty survival model. Within the cohort, 16.1% (n = 6296) were given perioperative RBC transfusions, with the fraction declining from 20% to 13% over the 6-year study period. The proportion of patients transfused varied by surgery type from 6.4% for low-risk operations (i.e., minor surgery) to 31.5% for orthopedic surgeries. Variations were largely associated with patient hemoglobin concentrations, but also with center (range: 3.7%-27.3%) and country (0.4%-25.3%). Even after adjusting for baseline hemoglobin, comorbidities and type of surgery, both center and country were significant sources of variation in transfusion practices. Among transfused participants, 60.4% (n = 3728/6170) had at least 1 hemoglobin concentration ≤80g/L and 86.0% (n = 5305/6170) had at least 1 hemoglobin concentration ≤90g/L, suggesting that relatively restrictive transfusion strategies were used in most. The proportion of patients receiving at least 1 RBC transfusion declined from 20% to 13% over 6 years. Background: The optimal preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) value of colorectal neoplasm patients is still being debated. This study aimed at determining the effect of preoperative anemia on patient outcomes and allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT)., Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled colorectal neoplasm patients, that underwent surgery, from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021. The primary outcomes were the association between anemia and average length of stay (ALOS) and the odds of ABT. The secondary outcomes were the risk factors of the primary outcomes. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to identify the association and risk factors., Results: A total of 14,352 inpatients were included in the study, of whom 3,035 experienced (21.15%) mild anemia, 1,500 (10.45%) moderate anemia, and 104 (0.72%) severe anemia. Overall, 1,418 (9.88%) patients received ABT during the hospitalization, and 546 (3.80%) patients received perioperative ABT. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, compared with the no anemic group, the odds ratio [OR] of ABT during the hospitalization for patients with mild/moderate/severe anemia were 5.915, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.717 - 7.418; 104.777, 95% CI: 84.345 - 130.160; and 13,361.442, 95% CI: 816.004 - 218,783.511, respectively, and the OR of periopera¬tive ABT were 4.332, 95% CI: 3.245 - 5.785; 27.492, 95% CI: 20.974 - 36.037; and 20.912, 95% CI: 11.832 - 36.959, respectively. Besides, the ALOS was longer, β were 0.619, 95% CI: 0.346 - 0.892; 1.188, 95% CI: 0.821 - 1.554; and 1.395, 95% CI: 0.107 - 2.684, respectively., Conclusions: Anemia is a common phenomenon in colorectal neoplasm surgical patients, and even mild anemia could be a deleterious predictor on the outcomes of colorectal neoplasm patients that underwent surgery.

Objectives: Chronic anaemia is a significant health concern, particularly among women of childbearing age. Factors such as menstrual blood loss, childbirth, inadequate nutrition, closely spaced pregnancies, and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding increase the risk of anaemia. This study investigated whether current contraceptive methods are associated with anaemia in Indian women of reproductive age., Methods: Cross-sectional data from the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey, conducted in 2019-2021, were used for this investigation. We included only non-pregnant and non-amenorrhoeic women in our analysis, resulting in a final analytical sample of 673 094 women aged 15-49. Bivariate cross-tabulations and multivariable logistic regression were employed to analyse the data., Results: The prevalence of anaemia was 57%, and the adjusted regression models found no significant association between the use of any contraceptive methods and women's haemoglobin status. Women using traditional contraceptive methods had 1.08 (95% confidence interval, 1.05 to 1.11) times higher odds of having anaemia. Among the modern methods, other than injectables, all other methods-such as an intrauterine device, barrier use, and sterilisation-were associated with higher odds of anaemia compared to women who used contraceptive pills., Conclusions: This study explored the relationship between modern contraceptives and haemoglobin levels in India, revealing that injectables were associated with a notable reduction in the odds of anaemia, whereas traditional contraceptives and other modern methods exhibited positive associations with anaemia. These findings prompt policymakers to focus on anaemia reduction and safe contraceptives. More research is needed to inform decisions, given the scant literature.
