Multiple supernumerary teeth are usually associated with various syndromes, but they are relatively uncommon as an isolated dental anomaly. The presence of multiple supplemental premolars in all four quadrants and especially in the maxilla is rare. This report presents a unique case of multiple supplemental premolars in all four quadrants that were distributed unevenly (two erupted; five unerupted). A series of radiographs taken over four years demonstrated further sequential developing bilateral supplemental premolars in the maxilla, where they are considered the rarest. Appropriate management and the importance of regular radiographic monitoring of such cases are briefly reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: Elimination of microorganisms and prevention of recurrence of infection from the complex root canal system of primary teeth requires an obturating material with broad antimicrobial activity. Hence, the purpose of the study is to assess and compare the antimicrobial efficacy of Triclosan, Amoxicillin and Eugenol individually and in combinations against a resistant microorganism viz., Enterococcus faecalis ., Materials and Methods: A two-fold serial dilution method was used to check the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of triclosan, amoxicillin and eugenol against thirty E. faecalis (isolated from oral lesions). The resistant strains were subjected to different combinations of three agents by modified checkerboard method. MIC was determined after incubation for 24 hours at 370°C. Then the three dilutions from MIC were inoculated on BHI agar plates and incubated overnight to determine minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC)., Results: The mean MIC and MBC of triclosan was 3.43 μg/mL and 3.75 μg/mL respectively. Whereas for amoxicillin, it was 3.43 μg/mL and 3.85 μg/mL. Eugenol did not show any inhibition up to a concentration of 3200 μg/mL. In combination, eugenol showed good synergistic effect with both triclosan and amoxicillin. In combination with triclosan, eugenol showed much promising result as compared with amoxicillin. But triclosan and amoxicillin combination showed inhibition at higher concentrations., Conclusion: Triclosan and eugenol combination showed better effectiveness against E. faecalis in comparison to amoxicillin and eugenol. Background: Tooth designation systems are routinely used in dental practice, for identification of teeth, recording dental data and communication among dental professionals. There are various dental notations systems for the primary and permanent dentition. The most popular are the Zsigmondy-Palmer system, the Universal Numbering System, and the FDI system. Others includes the Victor Haderup system, the Woelfel system, and the MICAP system. The majority of dental notations are focused on permanent teeth and are modified for primary teeth, even though the latter erupt before the permanent dentition., Conclusion: Advantages and disadvantages of notations for primary dentition are discussed and compared to a new alphanumeric system for primary teeth which is considered simple and convenient.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate fluoride uptake by tooth enamel with four different fluoride dentifrices., Study Design: Sixty human premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose were selected for the study. The teeth were covered with nail varnish leaving a window of 4 × 4 mm on the enamel surface of the buccal and lingual sides. The teeth were demineralised and were divided into four groups with 15 teeth in each group. The buccal window served as experimental and the lingual as control. The teeth were immersed in toothpaste slurry containing: sodium fluoride (Group A); sodium monofluorophosphate (Group B); stannous fluoride (Group C) and amine fluoride (Group D). The fluoride content in the etched superficial enamel layer in the windows was analysed using a fluoride ion-specific electrode., Results: Within the parameters of this study, the uptake of fluoride was statistically significant in Group D (p < 0.05). The uptake of fluoride by tooth enamel in an increasing order was Group A < Group B < Group C < Group D., Conclusion: The study showed that enamel treated with amine fluoride had the highest fluoride uptake.

Background: Supernumerary teeth are one of the most widely reported and significant anomaly in patients affecting the primary and early mixed dentition., Aim: To describe the distribution and characteristics of the supernumerary teeth in South Indian population of paediatric patients., Design: In a 12 year retrospective study, a total of 63,569 patients up to the age of 14 years who visited our department between June 2003 and May 2013 were revised.790 cases of supernumerary teeth were found. Patients were evaluated for age, sex, site, status of dentition, number, position, orientation and type of supernumerary teeth. Statistical analysis was carried out using chi square test., Results: 790 subjects with supernumerary teeth (481 males and 309 females) were detected, revealing male-female ratio of 1.55:1.The most common supernumerary teeth were mesiodens (82.28%), the most common site was the anterior maxilla (92.53%)region. Majority of patients had a single erupted supernumerary oriented straight in the arch. Patients in mixed dentition stage reported with maximum number of supernumerary teeth., Conclusions: The prevalence of supernumerary teeth in non syndromic South Indian paediatric population is 1.24% with slight male predilection and conical mesiodens being the commonest.

Background: Taurodontism is a clinical entity with a morpho-anatomical change in the shape of the tooth, which was thought to be absent in modern man. Taurodontism is mostly observed as an isolated trait or a component of a syndrome. Various techniques have been devised to diagnose taurodontism., Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze whether a biometric analysis was useful in diagnosing taurodontism, in radiographs which appeared to be normal on cursory observations., Setting and Design: This study was carried out in our institution by using radiographs which were taken for routine procedures., Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, panoramic radiographs were obtained from dental records of children who were aged between 9-14 years, who did not have any abnormality on cursory observations. Biometric analyses were carried out on permanent mandibular first molar(s) by using a novel biometric method. The values were tabulated and analysed., Statistics: Fischer exact probability test, Chi square test and Chi-square test with Yates correction were used for statistical analysis of the data., Results: Cursory observation did not yield us any case of taurodontism. In contrast, the biometric analysis yielded us a statistically significant number of cases of taurodontism. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the number of cases with taurodontism, which was obtained between the genders and the age group which was considered., Conclusion: Thus, taurodontism was diagnosed on a biometric analysis, which was otherwise missed on a cursory observation. It is therefore necessary from the clinical point of view, to diagnose even the mildest form of taurodontism by using metric analysis rather than just relying on a visual radiographic assessment, as its occurrence has many clinical implications and a diagnostic importance.

Aims: This in vivo study aimed to assess and compare the relative clinical and radiographic success of formocresol, glutaraldehyde and ferric sulphate as medicaments following pulpotomies in primary molars at three-monthly intervals over one year., Methods: The study was carried out on 90 primary molars in 54 children aged from 3 to 9 years. Selected teeth were equally distributed and randomly assigned to formocresol, glutaraldehyde and ferric sulphate pulpotomy medicament groups (30 in each group). The teeth were then evaluated clinically and radiographically at three-monthly intervals over one year. The resulting data were tabulated and statistically analysed using the chi-square test., Results: After one year, the clinical success rate was 100% with glutaraldehyde, 96.7% with ferric sulphate, and 86.7% with formocresol. The radiological success rate gradually decreased over the year in all pulpotomy medicament groups. Radiological success rates in formocresol, glutaraldehyde, and ferric sulphate groups were 56.7%, 83.3%, and 63.3%, respectively., Conclusion: Two per cent glutaraldehyde may be recommended as a more effective alternative to formocresol and ferric sulphate as a pulpotomy medicament.

Aims: This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of Papacárie(®) for caries removal as compared to the conventional method with respect to microbial flora, time, the amount of tissue removal, child's behavior, pain perception, and preference of treatment., Materials and Methods: Sixty primary molars of 30 children of age 4-9 years were selected randomly and divided into two groups of 30 teeth each: Group A treated by conventional method and group B with Papacárie(®) method., Results: Comparatively, no statistical difference was seen in microbial growth, total bacterial count, and lactobacilli count in both the groups (P = 0.36). The mean cavity entrance size with group A was 0.98133 mm and group B was 0.26083 mm (P < 0.001). The mean preparation time for group A was 4.7 Mins (minutes) and group B was 17.96 min s (P < 0.001). Majority of kids of both group A and B scored 3 (Frankl Behavior Rating Scale) before and after the treatment showing no statistical difference in their behavioral score (P = 1). In group A 50% of children experienced no pain as compared to 86.7% in group B (P = 0.01). There was no statistical difference in the preference of treatment (P = 0.12)., Conclusion: Thus, the Chemo mechanical caries removal method can be considered as an effective method to control pain and preserve sound tooth structure during caries excavation.

Foreign bodies can be found in the pulps of primary teeth during routine oral examinations. These foreign bodies can result in painful complications. A detailed case history and clinical and radiographic examinations are necessary to come to a conclusion about the nature, size, and location of the foreign body, and to determine the difficulty involved in its removal. The purpose of this paper was to discuss 2 clinical cases and the management of foreign bodies found lodged in primary molars.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor is an uncommon tumor of odontogenic origin. It is usually located in the anterior region of the maxilla associated with impacted canines. The purpose of this paper was to present a case of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in a 14-year-old girl with unusual clinical manifestations involving an impacted mandibular lateral incisor as well as its treatment follow-up.

Trauma of the oral and peroral structures are one of the most common and frequent complaints after dental caries with which a child is being referred to a dental clinic. As an emergency, we tend to treat the injuries without understanding or neglecting the cause of trauma. The different possible etiological factors are unnoticed, not revealed or not noted while taking the history of the patient. Sometimes negligence of the etiology by the dentist himself or the accompanying person could influence the prognosis and prevention. Thus, this paper is an effort towards exploring the common yet unnoticed etiological factors of pediatric dental trauma which we tend to knowingly ignore.

A major emphasis of modern-day pediatric dental care is a holistic approach to children and the importance of treating them as individuals and not merely as patients with mouth diseases. We should not restrict ourselves to the oral cavity alone, but also explore the mind of an individual, for in it lays the hidden clue to successful management. In order to achieve this, we need to meet the mind of the child before meeting the mouth. Surmounting pressure on today's children builds a lot of anxiety in them, and this in turn is the foundation for various psychological problems. One such rare but important psychological disorder is "trichotillomania." The present study is an attempt to provide an insight into this intriguing disorder based on a case report. Ameloblastomas have been categorized broadly into three biologic variants: cystic (unicystic), solid, and peripheral. The term plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma refers to a pattern of epithelial proliferation that has been described in cystic lesions of the jaws. Although the histology suggests that cystic ameloblastomas follow a biologically low-grade course, recent evidence suggests that they may often behave clinically as biologically aggressive tumors. This is supported by the high incidence of cortical perforation, tooth resorption, lesion size, bony destruction, and a high rate of recurrence after simple enucleation. This article tries to provide an insight for pediatric dentists regarding this biologically distinct entity. A literature review on the topic has been added along with a case report highlighting the state-of-the-art approach and management of such ameloblastomas, in pediatric patients.

Oratest, a caries activity test was performed on 48 school going children of Mangalore city to estimate efficacy of the test. High statistical significance was found when the means of control and test group were compared [gamma = 0.913]. The Oratest is found to be a simple chair side, less time consuming and inexpensive caries activity test.

A case of 13 old year is presented with supernumerary maxillary premolars one on either side. Radiograph revealed presence of five more supernumerary teeth unerupted in both maxilla and mandible. The implications of early diagnosis and management to prevent further complications are discussed.

Natal and Neonatal teeth although not unique anomalies, are observed in infants at birth or during the first 30 days of life. Here, the report of our four cases, in which the bilateral mandibular posterior natal teeth, which stands out to be a rare condition is presented. Etiological, clinical, histological features, complications and treatment modalities are discussed.
