1. A Phase 2 Exploratory Trial of a Vocabulary Intervention in High Poverty Elementary Education Settings

Abstract: This article reports results of a phase 2 exploratory trial of a vocabulary program delivered in elementary schools to improve student’s reading ability, including their comprehension. The intervention was tested as a targeted intervention in classrooms with children aged 7–10 across 20 weeks during one school year, with eligible students learning in small groups of four. Teachers and support staff received training in this cooperative learning approach to develop children’s vocabulary with particular focus on Tier‐2 words. School staff received additional support and resources to equip them to develop and implement the vocabulary instruction sessions to targeted students. The trial was undertaken with a sample of 101 students in seven schools from three English district areas with high levels of socio‐economic disadvantage. A standardized reading test was used to measure reading outcomes, with significant gains found in student’s overall reading ability, including comprehension. Owing to the positive results found in this trial, including positive feedback about implementation of the technique, next steps should be a larger trial with 48 schools to avoid the risk of sampling error due to limited number of schools.

2. Protocol: A randomized controlled trial of the Fluency into Comprehension program in primary schools

Abstract: This paper presents the research protocol for a Phase 2 randomized controlled trial of the Fluency into Comprehension program in primary schools. The program is a workforce development program that supports teachers and teaching assistants develop and deliver targeted reading fluency and comprehension instruction to children aged 7–9. The protocol outlines a research design to assess whether the program delivered over approximately 12 weeks improves reading outcomes, in a sample of up to 192 children from 12 schools in four English districts with high socio-economic disadvantage. The outcome measures are two reading standardized tests. A process evaluation will measure fidelity and potential for scale-up.

Abstract: Abstract Euclid is a European Space Agency medium-class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the cosmic vision 2015–2025 program. The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Euclid will explore the expansion history of the universe and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and red-shifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies over a large fraction of the sky. Although the main driver for Euclid is the nature of dark energy, Euclid science covers a vast range of topics, from cosmology to galaxy evolution to planetary research. In this review we focus on cosmology and fundamental physics, with a strong emphasis on science beyond the current standard models. We discuss five broad topics: dark energy and modified gravity, dark matter, initial conditions, basic assumptions and questions of methodology in the data analysis. This review has been planned and carried out within Euclid’s Theory Working Group and is meant to provide a guide to the scientific themes that will underlie the activity of the group during the preparation of the Euclid mission.

5. Sea Level Forecasts Aggregated from Established Operational Systems

Abstract: A system for providing routine seven-day forecasts of sea level observable at tide gauge locations is described and evaluated. Forecast time series are aggregated from well-established operational systems of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology; although following some adjustments these systems are only quasi-complimentary. Target applications are routine coastal decision processes under non-extreme conditions. The configuration aims to be relatively robust to operational realities such as version upgrades, data gaps and metadata ambiguities. Forecast skill is evaluated against hourly tide gauge observations. Characteristics of the bias correction term are demonstrated to be primarily static in time, with time varying signals showing regional coherence. This simple approach to exploiting existing complex systems can offer valuable levels of skill at a range of Australian locations. The prospect of interpolation between observation sites and exploitation of lagged-ensemble uncertainty estimates could be meaningfully pursued. Skill characteristics define a benchmark against which new operational sea level forecasting systems can be measured. More generally, an aggregation approach may prove to be optimal for routine sea level forecast services given the physically inhomogeneous processes involved and ability to incorporate ongoing improvements and extensions of source systems.

9. Future prospects on testing extensions to $\Lambda$CDM through the weak lensing of gravitational waves

Abstract: With planned space-based and 3rd generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors (LISA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer), and proposed DeciHz detectors (DECIGO, Big Bang Observer), it is timely to explore statistical cosmological tests that can be employed with the forthcoming plethora of data, $10^4-10^6$ mergers a year. We forecast the combination of the standard siren measurement with the weak lensing of gravitational waves from binary mergers. For 10 years of 3rd generation detector runtime, this joint analysis will constrain the dark energy equation of state with marginalised $1\sigma$ uncertainties of $\sigma(w_0)$~0.005 and $\sigma(w_a)$~0.04. This is comparable to or better than forecasts for future galaxy/intensity mapping surveys, and better constraints are possible when combining these and other future probes with gravitational waves. We find that combining mergers with and without an electromagnetic counterpart helps break parameter degeneracies. Using DeciHz detectors in the post-LISA era, we demonstrate for the first time how merging binaries could achieve a precision on the sum of neutrino masses of $\sigma(\Sigma m_{\nu})$~0.05 eV using $3\times10^6$ sources up to $z=3.5$ with a distance uncertainty of $1\%$, and ~percent or sub-percent precision also on curvature, dark energy, and other parameters, independently from other probes. Finally, we demonstrate how the cosmology dependence in the redshift distribution of mergers can be exploited to improve dark energy constraints if the cosmic merger rate is known, instead of relying on measured distributions as is standard in cosmology. 10. Non-Gaussian likelihood of weak lensing power spectra

Abstract: The power spectrum of weak lensing fluctuations has a non-Gaussian distribution due to its quadratic nature. On small scales the Central Limit Theorem acts to Gaussianize this distribution but non-Gaussianity in the signal due to gravitational collapse is increasing and the functional form of the likelihood is unclear. Analyses have traditionally assumed a Gaussian likelihood with non-linearity incorporated into the covariance matrix; here we provide the theory underpinning this assumption. We calculate, for the first time, the leading-order correction to the distribution of angular power spectra from non-Gaussianity in the underlying signal and study the transition to Gaussianity. Our expressions are valid for an arbitrary number of correlated maps and correct the Wishart distribution in the presence of weak (but otherwise arbitrary) non-Gaussianity in the signal. Surprisingly, the resulting distribution is not equivalent to an Edgeworth expansion. The leading-order effect is to broaden the covariance matrix by the usual trispectrum term, with residual skewness sourced by the trispectrum and the square of the bispectrum. Using lognormal lensing maps we demonstrate that our likelihood is uniquely able to model both large and mildly non-linear scales. We provide easy-to-compute statistics to quantify the size of the non-Gaussian corrections. We show that the full non-Gaussian likelihood can be accurately modelled as a Gaussian on small, non-linear scales. On large angular scales non-linearity in the lensing signal imparts a negligible correction to the likelihood, which takes the Wishart form in the full-sky case. Abstract: Sea-level rise is causing coastal inundation events in estuaries, harbours, bays, and tidal rivers to happen more often as predictable daily high and low tides reach higher levels. This can lead to coastal inundation happening under benign weather conditions, as flood thresholds are exceeded due to tides alone without the influence of storm surges or other phenomena. As such, changes in frequency of this 'tide-only' inundation may be a useful metric to quantify the role that sea-level rise plays in modulating the risk of coastal inundation from high still water levels. Here we present a conceptual model for 'tide-only' inundation and propose a practical methodology to formulate tide-only inundation statistics: estimates, historical trends, and future projections. This enables this emerging natural hazard to be fully incorporated into new and existing coastal risk assessment frameworks and considered in coastal management and planning strategies at local and national levels. Further, it leads to a framework that can quantify the role that tides play in coastal flooding as sea levels rise.

Abstract: Headline constraints on cosmological parameters from current weak lensing surveys are derived from two-point statistics that are known to be statistically sub-optimal, even in the case of Gaussian fields. We study the performance of a new fast implementation of the Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator, optimal for Gaussian fields, to test the performance of Pseudo-Cl estimators for upcoming weak lensing surveys and quantify the gain from a more optimal method. Through the use of realistic survey geometries, noise levels, and power spectra, we find that there is a decrease in the errors in the statistics of the recovered E-mode spectra to the level of ~20% when using the optimal QML estimator over the Pseudo-Cl estimator on the largest angular scales, while we find significant decreases in the errors associated with the B-modes for the QML estimator. This raises the prospects of being able to constrain new physics through the enhanced sensitivity of B-modes for forthcoming surveys that our implementation of the QML estimator provides. We test the QML method with a new implementation that uses conjugate-gradient and finite-differences differentiation methods resulting in the most efficient implementation of the full-sky QML estimator yet, allowing us to process maps at resolutions that are prohibitively expensive using existing codes. In addition, we investigate the effects of apodisation, B-mode purification, and the use of non-Gaussian maps on the statistical properties of the estimators. Abstract: The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

15. Sea Level Anomaly Forecasts on a Coastal Waveguide

Abstract: An approach to reduce forecast data to coastal waveguide coordinates is described and demonstrated, informed by the literature on coastally trapped waves (CTWs). All discussion is limited to the Australian mainland but the approach is generally relevant to regions where CTWs influence sea level, including the Americas and Africa. The approach does not produce new forecasts, but aims to focus forecaster attention on aspects of sea level forecasts prominent on the long Australian coast. The approach also explicitly addresses spatial issues associated with measuring coastal paths. Coastal paths are scale dependent and forecast models discretize the coastal boundary differently. A well-defined coastal path is required for the quantitative application of CTW concepts such as propagation distance and offshore direction. The relevance of coastally trapped signals and remote forcing is documented in the oceanographic literature, but is effectively unknown to the general public and rarely mentioned in press reports of sea level events such as nuisance flooding. Routine presentation of forecast guidance in waveguide coordinates could contribute to the transfer of oceanographic research understanding into forecast narratives. In addition, the approach can facilitate quantitative forecast evaluations that target CTW properties. Two ocean forecast systems are contrasted in this framework for the Australian mainland. One year of daily forecasts are compared, with indications that model baroclinicity is of practical relevance.

Abstract: Pocino, A., et al. (Euclid Collaboration), Photometric redshifts (photo-zs) are one of the main ingredients in the analysis of cosmological probes. Their accuracy particularly affects the results of the analyses of galaxy clustering with photometrically selected galaxies (GCph) and weak lensing. In the next decade, space missions such as Euclid will collect precise and accurate photometric measurements for millions of galaxies. These data should be complemented with upcoming ground-based observations to derive precise and accurate photo-zs. In this article we explore how the tomographic redshift binning and depth of ground-based observations will affect the cosmological constraints expected from the Euclid mission. We focus on GCph and extend the study to include galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL). We add a layer of complexity to the analysis by simulating several realistic photo-z distributions based on the Euclid Consortium Flagship simulation and using a machine learning photo-z algorithm. We then use the Fisher matrix formalism together with these galaxy samples to study the cosmological constraining power as a function of redshift binning, survey depth, and photo-z accuracy. We find that bins with an equal width in redshift provide a higher figure of merit (FoM) than equipopulated bins and that increasing the number of redshift bins from ten to 13 improves the FoM by 35% and 15% for GCph and its combination with GGL, respectively. For GCph, an increase in the survey depth provides a higher FoM. However, when we include faint galaxies beyond the limit of the spectroscopic training data, the resulting FoM decreases because of the spurious photo-zs. When combining GCph and GGL, the number density of the sample, which is set by the survey depth, is the main factor driving the variations in the FoM. Adding galaxies at faint magnitudes and high redshift increases the FoM, even when they are beyond the spectroscopic limit, since the number density increase compensates for the photo-z degradation in this case. We conclude that there is more information that can be extracted beyond the nominal ten tomographic redshift bins of Euclid and that we should be cautious when adding faint galaxies into our sample since they can degrade the cosmological constraints.

Abstract: Summary Background Oral anticoagulation reduces the rate of systemic embolism for patients with atrial fibrillation by two-thirds, but its benefits for patients with previous intracranial haemorrhage are uncertain. In the Start or STop Anticoagulants Randomised Trial (SoSTART), we aimed to establish whether starting is non-inferior to avoiding oral anticoagulation for survivors of intracranial haemorrhage who have atrial fibrillation. Methods SoSTART was a prospective, randomised, open-label, assessor-masked, parallel-group, pilot phase trial done at 67 hospitals in the UK. We recruited adults (aged ≥18 years) who had survived at least 24 h after symptomatic spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage, had atrial fibrillation, and had a CHA2DS2-VASc score of at least 2. Web-based computerised randomisation incorporating a minimisation algorithm allocated participants (1:1) to start or avoid long-term (≥1 year) full treatment dose open-label oral anticoagulation. The participants assigned to start oral anticoagulation received either a direct oral anticoagulant or vitamin K antagonist, and the group assigned to avoid oral anticoagulation received standard clinical practice (antiplatelet agent or no antithrombotic agent). The primary outcome was recurrent symptomatic spontaneous intracranial haemorrhage, and was adjudicated by an individual masked to treatment allocation. All outcomes were ascertained for at least 1 year after randomisation and assessed in the intention-to-treat population of all randomly assigned participants, using Cox proportional hazards regression adjusted for minimisation covariates. We planned a sample size of 190 participants (one-sided p=0·025, power 90%, allowing for non-adherence) based on a non-inferiority margin of 12% (or adjusted hazard ratio [HR] of 3·2). This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03153150) and is complete. Findings Between March 29, 2018, and Feb 27, 2020, consent was obtained at 61 sites for 218 participants, of whom 203 were randomly assigned at a median of 115 days (IQR 49–265) after intracranial haemorrhage onset. 101 were assigned to start and 102 to avoid oral anticoagulation. Participants were followed up for median of 1·2 years (IQR 0·97–1·95; completeness 97·2%). Starting oral anticoagulation was not non-inferior to avoiding oral anticoagulation: eight (8%) of 101 in the start group versus four (4%) of 102 in the avoid group had intracranial haemorrhage recurrences (adjusted HR 2·42 [95% CI 0·72–8·09]; p=0·152). Serious adverse events occurred in 17 (17%) participants in the start group and 15 (15%) in the avoid group. 22 (22%) patients in the start group and 11 (11%) patients in the avoid group died during the study. Interpretation Whether starting oral anticoagulation was non-inferior to avoiding it for people with atrial fibrillation after intracranial haemorrhage was inconclusive, although rates of recurrent intracranial haemorrhage were lower than expected. In view of weak evidence from analyses of three composite secondary outcomes, the possibility that oral anticoagulation might be superior for preventing symptomatic major vascular events should be investigated in adequately powered randomised trials. 23. Developing impact-based thresholds for coastal inundation from tide gauge observations

Abstract: This study presents the first assessment of the observed frequency of the impacts of high sea levels at locations along Australia’s northern coastline. We used a new methodology to systematically define impact-based thresholds for coastal tide gauges, utilising reports of coastal inundation from diverse sources. This method permitted a holistic consideration of impact-producing relative sea-level extremes without attributing physical causes. Impact-based thresholds may also provide a basis for the development of meaningful coastal flood warnings, forecasts and monitoring in the future. These services will become increasingly important as sea-level rise continues.The frequency of high sea-level events leading to coastal flooding increased at all 21 locations where impact-based thresholds were defined. Although we did not undertake a formal attribution, this increase was consistent with the well-documented rise in global sea levels. Notably, tide gauges from the south coast of Queensland showed that frequent coastal inundation was already occurring. At Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, impact-based thresholds were being exceeded on average 21.6 and 24.3 h per year respectively. In the case of Brisbane, the number of hours of inundation annually has increased fourfold since 1977.

Abstract: Accurate and precise covariance matrices will be important in enabling planned cosmological surveys to detect new physics. Standard methods imply either the need for many N-body simulations in order to obtain an accurate estimate, or a precise theoretical model. We combine these approaches by constructing a likelihood function conditioned on simulated and theoretical covariances, consistently propagating noise from the finite number of simulations and uncertainty in the theoretical model itself using an informative Inverse-Wishart prior. Unlike standard methods, our approach allows the required number of simulations to be less than the number of summary statistics. We recover the linear 'shrinkage' covariance estimator in the context of a Bayesian data model, and test our marginal likelihood on simulated mock power spectrum estimates. We conduct a thorough investigation into the impact of prior confidence in different choices of covariance models on the quality of model fits and parameter variances. In a simplified setting we find that the number of simulations required can be reduced if one is willing to accept a mild degradation in the quality of model fits, finding that even weakly informative priors can help to reduce the simulation requirements. We identify the correlation matrix of the summary statistics as a key quantity requiring careful modelling. Our approach can be easily generalized to any covariance model or set of summary statistics, and elucidates the role of hybrid estimators in cosmological inference., 21 pages, 11 figures. Abstract: This article reports results of a phase 2 exploratory trial of a vocabulary program delivered in elementary schools to improve student’s reading ability, including their comprehension. The intervention was tested as a targeted intervention in classrooms with children aged 7–10 across 20 weeks during one school year, with eligible students learning in small groups of four. Teachers and support staff received training in this cooperative learning approach to develop children’s vocabulary with particular focus on Tier‐2 words. School staff received additional support and resources to equip them to develop and implement the vocabulary instruction sessions to targeted students. The trial was undertaken with a sample of 101 students in seven schools from three English district areas with high levels of socio‐economic disadvantage. A standardized reading test was used to measure reading outcomes, with significant gains found in student’s overall reading ability, including comprehension. Owing to the positive results found in this trial, including positive feedback about implementation of the technique, next steps should be a larger trial with 48 schools to avoid the risk of sampling error due to limited number of schools.

Abstract: Modelling uncertainties at small scales, i.e. high $k$ in the power spectrum $P(k)$, due to baryonic feedback, nonlinear structure growth and the fact that galaxies are biased tracers poses a significant obstacle to fully leverage the constraining power of the {\it Euclid} wide-field survey. $k$-cut cosmic shear has recently been proposed as a method to optimally remove sensitivity to these scales while preserving usable information. In this paper we generalise the $k$-cut cosmic shear formalism to $3 \times 2$ point statistics and estimate the loss of information for different $k$-cuts in a $3 \times 2$ point analysis of the {\it Euclid} data. Extending the Fisher matrix analysis of~\citet{blanchard2019euclid}, we assess the degradation in constraining power for different $k$-cuts. We work in the idealised case and assume the galaxy bias is linear, the covariance is Gaussian, while neglecting uncertainties due to photo-z errors and baryonic feedback. We find that taking a $k$-cut at $2.6 \ h \ {\rm Mpc} ^{-1}$ yields a dark energy Figure of Merit (FOM) of 1018. This is comparable to taking a weak lensing cut at $\ell = 5000$ and a galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing cut at $\ell = 3000$ in a traditional $3 \times 2$ point analysis. We also find that the fraction of the observed galaxies used in the photometric clustering part of the analysis is one of the main drivers of the FOM. Removing $50 \% \ (90 \%)$ of the clustering galaxies decreases the FOM by $19 \% \ (62 \%)$. Given that the FOM depends so heavily on the fraction of galaxies used in the clustering analysis, extensive efforts should be made to handle the real-world systematics present when extending the analysis beyond the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample....

Abstract: Aims. The Euclid space telescope will measure the shapes and redshifts of galaxies to reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe and the growth of cosmic structures. The estimation of the expected performance of the experiment, in terms of predicted constraints on cosmological parameters, has so far relied on various individual methodologies and numerical implementations, which were developed for different observational probes and for the combination thereof. In this paper we present validated forecasts, which combine both theoretical and observational ingredients for different cosmological probes. This work is presented to provide the community with reliable numerical codes and methods for Euclid cosmological forecasts. Methods. We describe in detail the methods adopted for Fisher matrix forecasts, which were applied to galaxy clustering, weak lensing, and the combination thereof. We estimated the required accuracy for Euclid forecasts and outline a methodology for their development. We then compare and improve different numerical implementations, reaching uncertainties on the errors of cosmological parameters that are less than the required precision in all cases. Furthermore, we provide details on the validated implementations, some of which are made publicly available, in different programming languages, together with a reference training-set of input and output matrices for a set of specific models. These can be used by the reader to validate their own implementations if required. Results. We present new cosmological forecasts for Euclid. We find that results depend on the specific cosmological model and remaining freedom in each setting, for example flat or non-flat spatial cosmologies, or different cuts at non-linear scales. The numerical implementations are now reliable for these settings. We present the results for an optimistic and a pessimistic choice for these types of settings. We demonstrate that the impact of cross-correlations is particularly relevant for models beyond a cosmological constant and may allow us to increase the dark energy figure of merit by at least a factor of three., 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

It not only accompanies the process of particle acceleration, but also has feedback on the formation of the energy distribution of the parent electrons. The radiative cooling time of electrons decreases with energy as t SYN �� 1/E; correspondingly, the overall radiation efficiency increases with energy. However, this effect strictly limits the maximum energy of individual photons. Even in the so-called extreme accelerators, where the acceleration proceeds at the highest possible rate, , allowed in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic plasma, the synchrotron radiation cannot extend well beyond the characteristic energy determined by the electron mass and the fine-structure constant: . In this paper, we propose a model in which the formation of synchrotron radiation takes place in compact magnetic blobs located inside the particle accelerator and develop a formalism for calculations of synchrotron radiation emerging from such systems. We demonstrate that for certain combinations of parameters characterizing the accelerator and the magnetic blobs, the synchrotron radiation can extend beyond this limit by a several orders of magnitude. This scenario requires a weak magnetization of the particle accelerator, and an efficient conversion of gas internal energy into magnetic energy in sufficiently small blobs. Abstract: [Context] The ESA Euclid space telescope could observe up to 150 000 asteroids as a side product of its primary cosmological mission. Asteroids appear as trailed sources, that is streaks, in the images. Owing to the survey area of 15 000 square degrees and the number of sources, automated methods have to be used to find them. Euclid is equipped with a visible camera, VIS (VISual imager), and a near-infrared camera, NISP (Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer), with three filters., [Aims] We aim to develop a pipeline to detect fast-moving objects in Euclid images, with both high completeness and high purity., [Methods] We tested the StreakDet software to find asteroids from simulated Euclid images. We optimized the parameters of StreakDet to maximize completeness, and developed a post-processing algorithm to improve the purity of the sample of detected sources by removing false-positive detections., [Results] StreakDet finds 96.9% of the synthetic asteroid streaks with apparent magnitudes brighter than 23rd magnitude and streak lengths longer than 15 pixels (10 arcsec h-1), but this comes at the cost of finding a high number of false positives. The number of false positives can be radically reduced with multi-streak analysis, which utilizes all four dithers obtained by Euclid., [Conclusions] StreakDet is a good tool for identifying asteroids in Euclid images, but there is still room for improvement, in particular, for finding short (less than 13 pixels, corresponding to 8 arcsec h-1) and/or faint streaks (fainter than the apparent magnitude of 23)., M.P. and M.G. acknowledge funding from the Academy of Finland (projects #316292 and #299543). Abstract: Forthcoming large photometric surveys for cosmology require precise and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements for the success of their main science objectives. However, to date, no method has been able to produce photo-zs at the required accuracy using only the broad-band photometry that those surveys will provide. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current methods is a crucial step in the eventual development of an approach to meet this challenge. We report on the performance of 13 photometric redshift code single value redshift estimates and redshift probability distributions (PDZs) on a common set of data, focusing particularly on the 0.2pdbl-pdbl2.6 redshift range that the Euclid mission will probe. We designed a challenge using emulated Euclid data drawn from three photometric surveys of the COSMOS field. The data was divided into two samples: one calibration sample for which photometry and redshifts were provided to the participants; and the validation sample, containing only the photometry to ensure a blinded test of the methods. Participants were invited to provide a redshift single value estimate and a PDZ for each source in the validation sample, along with a rejection flag that indicates the sources they consider unfit for use in cosmological analyses. The performance of each method was assessed through a set of informative metrics, using cross-matched spectroscopic and highly-accurate photometric redshifts as the ground truth. We show that the rejection criteria set by participants are efficient in removing strong outliers, that is to say sources for which the photo-z deviates by more than 0.15(1pdbl+pdblz) from the spectroscopic-redshift (spec-z). We also show that, while all methods are able to provide reliable single value estimates, several machine-learning methods do not manage to produce useful PDZs. We find that no machine-learning method provides good results in the regions of galaxy color-space that are sparsely populated by spectroscopic-redshifts, for example zpdbl> pdbl1. However they generally perform better than template-fitting methods at low redshift (zpdbl< pdbl0.7), indicating that template-fitting methods do not use all of the information contained in the photometry. We introduce metrics that quantify both photo-z precision and completeness of the samples (post-rejection), since both contribute to the final figure of merit of the science goals of the survey (e.g., cosmic shear from Euclid). Template-fitting methods provide the best results in these metrics, but we show that a combination of template-fitting results and machine-learning results with rejection criteria can outperform any individual method. On this basis, we argue that further work in identifying how to best select between machine-learning and template-fitting approaches for each individual galaxy should be pursued as a priority., GD and AG acknowledge the support from the Sinergia program of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Abstract: [Context]The data from the Euclid mission will enable the measurement of the angular positions and weak lensing shapes of over a billion galaxies, with their photometric redshifts obtained together with ground-based observations. This large dataset, with well-controlled systematic effects, will allow for cosmological analyses using the angular clustering of galaxies (GCph) and cosmic shear (WL). For Euclid, these two cosmological probes will not be independent because they will probe the same volume of the Universe. The cross-correlation (XC) between these probes can tighten constraints and is therefore important to quantify their impact for Euclid., [Aims] In this study, we therefore extend the recently published Euclid forecasts by carefully quantifying the impact of XC not only on the final parameter constraints for different cosmological models, but also on the nuisance parameters. In particular, we aim to decipher the amount of additional information that XC can provide for parameters encoding systematic effects, such as galaxy bias, intrinsic alignments (IAs), and knowledge of the redshift distributions., [Methods] We follow the Fisher matrix formalism and make use of previously validated codes. We also investigate a different galaxy bias model, which was obtained from the Flagship simulation, and additional photometric-redshift uncertainties; we also elucidate the impact of including the XC terms on constraining these latter., [Results] Starting with a baseline model, we show that the XC terms reduce the uncertainties on galaxy bias by ∼17% and the uncertainties on IA by a factor of about four. The XC terms also help in constraining the γ parameter for minimal modified gravity models. Concerning galaxy bias, we observe that the role of the XC terms on the final parameter constraints is qualitatively the same irrespective of the specific galaxy-bias model used. For IA, we show that the XC terms can help in distinguishing between different models, and that if IA terms are neglected then this can lead to significant biases on the cosmological parameters. Finally, we show that the XC terms can lead to a better determination of the mean of the photometric galaxy distributions., [Conclusions] We find that the XC between GCph and WL within the Euclid survey is necessary to extract the full information content from the data in future analyses. These terms help in better constraining the cosmological model, and also lead to a better understanding of the systematic effects that contaminate these probes. Abstract: We present a new, updated version of the EuclidEmulator (called EuclidEmulator2), a fast and accurate predictor for the nonlinear correction of the matter power spectrum. Percent-level accurate emulation is now supported in the eight-dimensional parameter space of $w_0w_a$CDM$+\sum m_\nu$models between redshift $z=0$ and $z=3$ for spatial scales within the range 0.01 $h$/Mpc $\leq k \leq$ 10 $h$/Mpc. In order to achieve this level of accuracy, we have had to improve the quality of the underlying N-body simulations used as training data: (1) we use self-consistent linear evolution of non-dark matter species such as massive neutrinos, photons, dark energy and the metric field, (2) we perform the simulations in the so-called N-body gauge, which allows one to interpret the results in the framework of general relativity, (3) we run over 250 high-resolution simulations with $3000^3$ particles in boxes of 1 (Gpc/$h$)${}^3$ volumes based on paired-and-fixed initial conditions and (4) we provide a resolution correction that can be applied to emulated results as a post-processing step in order to drastically reduce systematic biases on small scales due to residual resolution effects in the simulations. We find that the inclusion of the dynamical dark energy parameter $w_a$ significantly increases the complexity and expense of creating the emulator. The high fidelity of EuclidEmulator2 is tested in various comparisons against N-body simulations as well as alternative fast predictors like Halofit, HMCode and CosmicEmu. A blind test is successfully performed against the Euclid Flagship v2.0 simulation. Nonlinear correction factors emulated with EuclidEmulator2 are accurate at the level of 1% or better for 0.01 $h$/Mpc $\leq k \leq$ 10 $h$/Mpc and $z\leq3$ compared to high-resolution dark matter only simulations. Abstract: Forthcoming space-based observations will require high-quality point-spread function (PSF) models for weak gravitational lensing measurements. One approach to generating these models is using a wavefront model based on the known telescope optics. We present an empirical framework for validating such models to confirm that they match the actual PSF to within requirements by comparing the models to the observed light distributions of isolated stars. We apply this framework to Tiny Tim, the standard tool for generating model PSFs for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), testing its models against images taken by HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys in the Wide Field Channel. We show that Tiny Tim's models, in the default configuration, differ significantly from the observed PSFs, most notably in their sizes. We find that the quality of Tiny Tim PSFs can be improved through fitting the full set of Zernike polynomial coefficients which characterise the optics, to the point where the practical significance of the difference between model and observed PSFs is negligible for most use cases, resulting in additive and multiplicative biases both of order approximately 4e-4. We also show that most of this improvement can be retained through using an updated set of Zernike coefficients, which we provide., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, code included. Abstract: Martinelli, M., et al., Upcoming surveys will map the growth of large-scale structure with unprecented precision, improving our understanding of the dark sector of the Universe. Unfortunately, much of the cosmological information is encoded on small scales, where the clustering of dark matter and the effects of astrophysical feedback processes are not fully understood. This can bias the estimates of cosmological parameters, which we study here for a joint analysis of mock Euclid cosmic shear and Planck cosmic microwave background data. We use different implementations for the modelling of the signal on small scales and find that they result in significantly different predictions. Moreover, the different non-linear corrections lead to biased parameter estimates, especially when the analysis is extended into the highly non-linear regime, with the Hubble constant, H0, and the clustering amplitude, σ8, affected the most. Improvements in the modelling of non-linear scales will therefore be needed if we are to resolve the current tension with more and better data. For a given prescription for the non-linear power spectrum, using different corrections for baryon physics does not significantly impact the precision of Euclid, but neglecting these correction does lead to large biases in the cosmological parameters. Abstract: We have previously presented a reconstruction of Horndeski scalar-tensor theories from linear cosmological observables. It includes free nonlinear terms which can be added onto the reconstructed covariant theory without affecting the background and linear dynamics. After discussing the uniqueness of these correction terms, we apply this nonlinear freedom to a range of different applications. First we demonstrate how the correction terms can be configured to endow the reconstructed models with screening mechanisms such as the chameleon, k-mouflage, and Vainshtein effects. A further implication is the existence of classes of Horndeski models that are degenerate with standard cosmology to an arbitrary level in the cosmological perturbations. Particularly interesting examples are kinetically self-accelerating models that mimic the dynamics of the cosmological constant to an arbitrary degree in perturbations. Finally, we develop the reconstruction method further to the level of higher-order effective field theory, which under the restriction to a luminal propagation speed of gravitational waves introduces two new free functions per order. These functions determine the corresponding correction terms in the linearly reconstructed action at the same order. Our results enable the connection of linear cosmological constraints on generalized modifications of gravity and dark energy with the nonlinear regime and astrophysical probes for a more global interpretation of the wealth of forthcoming cosmological survey data.

Abstract: This paper presents the research protocol for an efficacy randomized controlled trial of the Reciprocal Reading program in high schools. The program is a workforce development program that supports Teachers and Teaching Assistants develop and deliver targeted reading comprehension instruction to high school students aged 11–13. The protocol outlines a Level 2 exploratory randomized controlled trial research design to assess whether the program delivered over approximately 6 months improves reading outcomes, in a sample of 311 children from 14 schools in four English districts with high socio-economic disadvantage. The primary outcome measure for analysis is reading comprehension with secondary outcomes of overall literacy and reading accuracy. A process evaluation will measure fidelity to implementation and potential for scale-up.

Abstract: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy is a well-established, cognition-based intervention for people with mild to moderate dementia. However, it can be difficult for older people with dementia, particularly those living alone, to access Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups in the community. Television offers familiar technology with potential to transmit material similar to that used in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups. Consequently, an interactive pilot television episode of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy was devised that adheres to the key principles and session themes of group Cognitive Stimulation Therapy. Consideration was given to the suitability of resources, on-screen visual cues, time given for the person with dementia viewing to process, consider and answer questions, possible interactions with the audience, and the grading of activities. The aim of the pilot episode was to be accessible in the home of the person with dementia, by themselves or with a caregiver, with the potential for enjoyment and cognitive stimulation similar to that seen in group Cognitive Stimulation Therapy.

Abstract: In modern weak-lensing surveys, the common approach to correct for residual systematic biases in the shear is to calibrate shape measurement algorithms using simulations. These simulations must fully capture the complexity of the observations to avoid introducing any additional bias. In this paper we study the importance of faint galaxies below the observational detection limit of a survey. We simulate simplified Euclid VIS images including and excluding this faint population, and measure the shift in the multiplicative shear bias between the two sets of simulations. We measure the shear with three different algorithms: a moment-based approach, model fitting, and machine learning. We find that for all methods, a spatially uniform random distribution of faint galaxies introduces a shear multiplicative bias of the order of a few times $10^{-3}$. This value increases to the order of $10^{-2}$ when including the clustering of the faint galaxies, as measured in the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra-Deep Field. The magnification of the faint background galaxies due to the brighter galaxies along the line of sight is found to have a negligible impact on the multiplicative bias. We conclude that the undetected galaxies must be included in the calibration simulations with proper clustering properties down to magnitude 28 in order to reach a residual uncertainty on the multiplicative shear bias calibration of a few times $10^{-4}$, in line with the $2\times10^{-3}$ total accuracy budget required by the scientific objectives of the Euclid survey. Abstract: Forthcoming large-scale surveys will soon attempt to measure cosmic shear to an unprecedented level of accuracy, requiring a similarly high level of accuracy in the shear measurements of galaxies. Factors such as pixelisation, imperfect point-spread function (PSF) correction, and pixel noise can all directly or indirectly lead to biases in shear measurements, and so it can be necessary for shear measurement methods to be calibrated against internal, external, or simulated data to minimize bias. It is thus important to understand the nature of this calibration. In this paper, we show that a typical calibration procedure will on average leave no residual additive bias, but will leave a residual multiplicative bias. Additionally, the errors on the post-calibration bias parameters will be changed, and on average increased, from the errors on the pre-calibration measurements of these parameters, but that this is generally worth the benefit in decreasing the expected value of the multiplicative bias. We find that in most typical cases, it is worthwhile to apply a first-order bias correction, while a higher-order bias correction is only worthwhile for methods with intrinsically high multiplicative bias ($>10$ per cent) or when the simulation size is very small ($, 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: Baryonic effects on large-scale structure, if not accounted for, can significantly bias dark energy constraints. As the detailed physics of the baryons is not yet well-understood, correcting for baryon effects introduces additional parameters which must be marginalized over, increasing the uncertainties on the inferred cosmological parameters. Forthcoming weak lensing surveys are aiming for percent-level precision on the dark energy equation of state, so the problem must be thoroughly examined. We use a halo model with analytic modifications which capture the impact of adiabatic contraction of baryons and feedback on the matter power spectrum, and generalize the Navarro-Frenk-White profile to account for a possible inner core. A Fisher analysis predicts degradations of 40% in the $w_0$-$w_a$ Figure of Merit for a Euclid-like survey, and up to 80% for other cosmological parameters. We forecast potential inner core constraints of a few $\mathrm{kpc}$, while for a fixed inner core, adiabatic concentration and feedback parameters are constrained to a few percent. We explore the scales where baryons and dark energy contribute most to the Fisher information, finding that probing to increasingly non-linear scales does little to reduce degradation. Including external baryon information improves our forecasts, but limiting degradation to 1% requires strong priors. Adding Planck cosmic microwave background priors improves the Figure of Merit by a factor of 2.7 and almost completely recovers the individual marginalized errors on $w_0$ and $w_a$. We also quantify the calibration of baryon modelling required to reduce biases of dark energy forecasts to acceptable levels for forthcoming lensing surveys., 20 pages, 17 figures. Abstract: This manuscript presents results of a Level 2 exploratory randomized controlled trial of the Reciprocal Reading programme in secondary schools. The programme is a workforce development programme that supports teachers and teaching assistants develop and deliver targeted reading comprehension instruction to secondary school students aged 11–13. The research assessed whether the programme could be delivered in secondary school settings and explored whether it improves reading outcomes in this context. The Reciprocal Reading programme was delivered successfully over approximately 6 months in a sample of 315 students from 14 schools in five English districts with high socio-economic disadvantage. Positive Effect Sizes were observed in the primary outcome measure for analysis (reading comprehension) and the secondary outcome measures of overall literacy and reading accuracy, and the overall reading performance of the students. Teachers and teaching assistants reported that they found the programme acceptable and they evaluated the success of the programme to be universally successful. The programme proved easy to implement in secondary schools and was received with overwhelmingly positive attitudes by teachers and teaching assistants. It showed ability to be universally implemented and had good adherence to planned implementation in all, but one school. A larger study is warranted to ascertain whether effects generalise to a larger population.

Abstract: We investigate the use of estimators of weak lensing power spectra based on a flat-sky implementation of the Pseudo-Cl (PCl) technique, where the masked shear field is transformed without regard for masked regions of sky. This masking mixes power, and E-convergence and B-modes. To study the accuracy of forward-modelling and full-sky power spectrum recovery we consider both large-area survey geometries, and small-scale masking due to stars and a checkerboard model for field-of-view gaps. The power spectrum for the large-area survey geometry is sparsely-sampled and highly oscillatory, which makes modelling problematic. Instead, we derive an overall calibration for large-area mask bias using simulated fields. The effects of small-area star masks can be accurately corrected for, while the checkerboard mask has oscillatory and spiky behaviour which leads to percent biases. Apodisation of the masked fields leads to increased biases and a loss of information. We find that we can construct an unbiased forward-model of the raw PCls, and recover the full-sky convergence power to within a few percent accuracy for both Gaussian and lognormal-distributed shear fields. Propagating this through to cosmological parameters using a Fisher-Matrix formalism, we find we can make unbiased estimates of parameters for surveys up to 1,200 deg$^2$ with 30 galaxies per arcmin$^2$, beyond which the percent biases become larger than the statistical accuracy. This implies a flat-sky PCl analysis is accurate for current surveys but a Euclid-like survey will require higher accuracy., 25 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: This study was designed to provide an evaluation of two types of train seat displays (OLED and E-ink), from a user-centred perspective. Numerous factors influence the decisions on which display to use, such as costs or energy use. It is also important to consider human factors aspects like readability and user preferences. To provide some real-world insights into these issues we designed a pilot study to compare both displays. Participants were asked to give their impressions and respond to questions during a semi-structured interview process, when they were presented with both displays. Results show that participants favour the OLED display overall as it is easily noticeable in different light conditions. However, some aspects of the E-ink are preferred: it is easier to read and understand. We conclude that research with real users is extremely important when designing and defining hardware to be used during the implementation of intelligent transport systems.

50. Joint cosmological inference of standard sirens and gravitational wave weak lensing

Abstract: We present the first joint inference of standard sirens and gravitational wave weak lensing by filtering of the same dataset. We imagine a post-LISA scenario emerging around the late 2030s when LISA will have accumulated a number of detections at high redshift; LIGO-VIRGO will have finished observing at low redshift, and Einstein Telescope will have started making new observations out to redshifts possibly overlapping with LISA. Euclid and other cosmological probes will have provided constraints at percent level by then, but mostly exhausted their ability to improve any further. We derive forecasts assuming $\sim1\,\text{deg}^{-2}$ detected sources, in conjunction with a spectroscopic follow-up (e.g. by Euclid, DESI, or ATHENA). Thanks to the statistical power of standard sirens as a geometry probe -- lifting key degeneracies in the gravitational wave weak lensing -- and no external priors assumed, the constraints on dark matter and its clustering, namely $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$, could be achieved to $2\%$ and $3\%$. The Hubble constant could be constrained to better than $1\%$ in all cases; the dark energy density, $\Omega_\Lambda$, to $2\%$, and curvature, $\Omega_K$, to $0.02$; the amplitude and spectral tilt of the scalar fluctuations, $\ln(10^{10}A_s)$ and $n_s$, to $2\%$ and $7\%$. As a completely independent cosmological probe, with less calibration requirements, the joint inference of standard sirens and gravitational wave weak lensing might help solve the tensions currently observed between other cosmological probes, such as CMB, galaxy lensing, and Type Ia SNs, and distinguish between residual systematics and new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, 4 figures
