The “Bridging the Gap between Science and Policy in Agri-Food Public Health” workshop and training event was held on March 6th and 7th, 2013, in Guelph, ON. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together diverse agri-food public health professionals working at the science and policy interface in Canada to increase awareness and capacity for evidence-informed policy-making in this sector.

Porcine proliferative enteropathy caused by Lawsonia intracellularis is an important enteric disease in swine throughout the world. Information regarding the distribution of this pathogen in Canadian swine herds would be beneficial for the creation of control protocols. Pigs from Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta were tested by using an indirect immunofluorescence assay for antibodies to L. intracellularis. Pig seroprevalence was calculated as the proportion of pigs positive from total pigs tested in the targeted population. Seroprevalence (+/- standard error [s(x)]) in market hogs in Ontario from farrow-finish (FF) farms and finishing (FIN) farms were significantly different at 77% (s(x) = 7%) and 29% (s(x) = 15%), respectively. Seroprevalence for sows and gilts in FF and farrowing and nursery (FAR + NUR) farms in Ontario were 90% (s(x) = 3%) and 93% (s(x) = 6%), respectively. Seroprevalence in breeding females in Quebec from FF and FAR farms was 82% (s(x) = 5%) and 87% (s(x) = 3%), respectively. Seroprevalence (57%, s(x) = 8%) in finishing pigs in Alberta from FF farms was significantly different from that of multisite (MS) farms and FIN farms, 6% (s(x) = 6%) and 9% (s(x) = 5%), respectively. Lawsonia intracellularis appears to be widespread in Canada and the seroprevalence on FF farms is higher than that on FIN and MS farms, possibly due to the presence of breeding females or management differences.

Passive laboratory-based surveillance data from Alberta Agriculture Food and Rural Development were analyzed for common Salmonella serovars, prevalences, trends, and for the presence of temporal clusters. There were 1767 isolates between October 1990 and December 2001 comprising 63 different serovars, including 961 isolates from chickens, 418 from cattle, 108 from pigs, 102 from turkeys, and 178 from all other species combined. Salmonella Typhimurium, Heidelberg, Hadar, Kentucky, and Thompson were the 5 most frequently isolated serovars. Approximately 60% of the S. Typhimurium were isolated from cattle, whereas over 90% of the S. Heidelberg, Hadar, Kentucky, and Thompson were isolated from chickens. Salmonella Enteritidis was rarely isolated. There was an increasing trend in isolates from chickens, cattle, and pigs, and a decreasing trend in isolates from turkeys. Temporal clusters were observed in 11 of 15 serovars examined in chickens (S. Anatum, Heidelberg, Infantis, Kentucky, Mbandaka, Montevideo, Nienstedten, Oranienburg, Thompson, Typhimurium, and Typhimurium var. Copenhagen), 5 of 5 serovars in cattle (S. Dublin, Montevideo, Muenster, Typhimurium, and Typhimurium var. Copenhagen), and 1 of 3 serovars in pigs (S. Typhimurium). Short-duration clusters may imply point source infections, whereas long-duration clusters may indicate an increase in the prevalence of the serovar, farm-to-farm transmission, or a wide-spread common source. A higher concentration of clusters in the winter months may reflect greater confinement, reduced ventilation, stressors, or increased exposure to wildlife vectors that are sharing housing during the winter. Detection of large clusters of Salmonella may have public health implications in addition to animal health concerns.

A reliable method to produce proficiency samples containing known numbers of Trichinella spiralis cysts for use in quality assurance systems for Trichinella digestion tests was developed and validated. A filtrate containing Trichinella cysts was produced by homogenizing and filtering the muscles of an experimentally infected rat. Using a stereomicroscope and micropipette, intact cysts were removed from the filtrate and were transferred onto an agar substrate to allow accurate counting and subsequent transfer into a sample matrix. The proficiency sample matrix consisted of 20-g balls of lean ground beef and was combined with 80 g of a Trichinella-free muscle tissue to obtain the required 100-g sample weight for the assay. The mean overall larval recovery from 404 proficiency samples was 93.0%. Larval recoveries > or = 95, 85, and 75% occurred in 52.4, 84.4, and 94.3%, respectively, of the 404 samples tested. Results indicated that, after a short training period, technicians with no prior experience in digestion techniques performed as well as experienced technicians. The maximum shelf life of proficiency samples was not determined but was at least 3 weeks. Validation data were used to develop panels composed of proficiency samples prepared as described above and to establish guidelines for the interpretation of proficiency panel results.

Twenty-four sows (six littermate groups of four sows each) from 29 to 106 kg liveweight were fed either 0 or 8% solvent-extracted rapeseed meal, substituted on an isonitrogenous basis for soybean meal and wheat. The two groups were then subdivided to receive either 0 or 8% rapeseed meal in their diets through two complete reproductive cycles.Average daily gain of gilts fed rapeseed meal was lower throughout the growing period but was significantly depressed only from 90 to 106 kg liveweight. Number of services to conception, gestation weight gains, gestation length and lactation weight losses were not significantly influenced by dietary treatment. In the first reproductive cycle, sows fed rapeseed meal during the growing period farrowed only 0.2 pigs less per litter than those fed the diet containing soybean meal, but weaned 2.5 pigs less which resulted in a reduced litter weaning weight.During the second reproductive cycle, treatment during growth had no significant influence on performance of the sows or litters. Sows fed rapeseed meal during gestation and lactation performed as well during both reproductive cycles as those fed the soybean meal diet. The results indicate that levels of 8% rapeseed meal should not be fed to growing gilts that are to be saved for reproduction.
