Abstract

Scientific evidence regularly guides policy decisions1, with behavioural science increasingly part of this process2. In April 2020, an influential paper3 proposed 19 policy recommendations (claims) detailing how evidence from behavioural science could contribute to efforts to reduce impacts and end the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we assess 747 pandemic-related research articles that empirically investigated those claims. We report the scale of evidence and whether evidence supports them to indicate applicability for policymaking. Two independent teams, involving 72 reviewers, found evidence for 18 of 19 claims, with both teams finding evidence supporting 16 (89%) of those 18 claims. The strongest evidence supported claims that anticipated culture, polarization and misinformation would be associated with policy effectiveness. Claims suggesting trusted leaders and positive social norms increased adherence to behavioural interventions also had strong empirical support, as did appealing to social consensus or bipartisan agreement. Targeted language in messaging yielded mixed effects and there were no effects for highlighting individual benefits or protecting others. No available evidence existed to assess any distinct differences in effects between using the terms physical distancing and social distancing. Analysis of 463 papers containing data showed generally large samples; 418 involved human participants with a mean of 16,848 (median of 1,699). That statistical power underscored improved suitability of behavioural science research for informing policy decisions. Furthermore, by implementing a standardized approach to evidence selection and synthesis, we amplify broader implications for advancing scientific evidence in policy formulation and prioritization.

Abstract

Renewable sources of electricity generation currently provide 47 % of the UK's total installed capacity. Offshore wind accounts for 13 % of the total and is set to increase significantly over the next decade, driven by the UK Government's target to reach net zero by the year 2050. An increasing number of offshore wind farms will use voltage source converter (VSC) high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission schemes to transfer power to the onshore electricity grid. VSC-HVDC transmission is also being used to support the integration of renewables into future electricity grids. Given the rapid rollout of VSC-HVDC links, a thorough understanding of the technology is required. At present, much of the research into VSC-HVDC in the public domain fails to capture the complexities of real-world control hardware, leading to inaccuracies in simulation models. Limited research has been carried out into the effect of controller implementation in software upon real-world processing delays in modular multilevel converters (MMC). The research presented in this thesis addresses these shortcomings by providing a detailed analysis of the delays in the capacitor balancing control (CBC) loop of an MMC. Several sorting algorithms for use in the CBC loop have been implemented across a range of industrially representative control hardware and software platforms. The processing resource usage and execution delay have been measured to guide the algorithm selection process. A link between execution delay, choice of CBC method, and controller performance has been identified and is discussed. A simple method for incorporating this execution delay into a PSCAD/EMTDC simulation is then presented as a means of improving simulation model fidelity. A full suite of control software has been developed for a reduced-scale converter hardware prototype (CHP) MMC for future research into control loop delay and synchronisation. The implementation techniques developed are applicable to MMCs with a distributed control architecture in academia and industry.

18. Social risk in adolescence

Abstract

Adolescence, defined as 10-24 years, is a time of heightened sensitivity to the negative effects of social rejection. Avoiding social risks - decisions or actions that could lead to social rejection - may therefore be important for adolescents, for whom social status and acceptance predicts future mental and physical health. In this thesis, I describe a series of studies that investigated the relationship between social risk and adolescence. In my first study, I developed a novel self-report measure of concern for health and social risk behaviours. I assessed age-related differences in concern for health and social risk between adolescence and adulthood, and whether these were related to rejection sensitivity and depressive symptomatology. In my second study, I explored the degree to which adolescents' engagement in health risks and illegal behaviours was related to whether or not they perceived these behaviours to increase their likability. I also investigated how this relationship is impacted by adolescents' experience of victimisation. In my third study, I used network analysis to explore the link between sexual minority status, depression, interpersonal relationships and health risk behaviours in a large cohort study of adolescents. In my fourth study, I designed an experiment to measure the extent to which adolescents versus adults show a preference for social versus non-social stimuli within an academic diligence task. I discuss how my findings suggest adolescence to be a period of heightened sensitivity to social risk, and how this impacts decisions to engage in risk taking behaviour. I consider how my findings relate to legal and policy issues around the minimum age of criminal responsibility, joint enterprise convictions and the use of peer-led approaches for behaviour change.

Abstract

Evidence-based assessment, which requires the use of reliable and valid measurement tools, is an essential component of many services that school social workers provide to promote the social, emotional, and behavioral health of students. A wide variety of psychometrically sound assessment tools exist to choose from, but it can be difficult for school personnel to identify and access the tools best suited to meet their needs. In an effort to reduce these barriers, the authors of this article provide a concise guide to free, validated measurement tools that are feasible for routine use in school settings for the most common youth mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, and disruptive behavior). The psychometric properties and other practical characteristics of 37 measurement tools are reviewed, accompanied by links to access each tool and suggestions to help social workers identify which may best fit any particular combination of the diverse goals, school settings, and student populations they serve.

Simple Summary: In our paper, we examine various facets of prostate cancer lung metastasis. We explore their clinical manifestations, such as respiratory symptoms and potential complications. Diagnostic modalities, including imaging techniques and biomarker analysis, are scrutinized for accurate identification. Treatment strategies, encompassing surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, are discussed for their efficacy. Survival outcomes are assessed to gauge the effectiveness of different interventions. Through comprehensive analysis, we aim to provide insights into managing prostate cancer lung metastasis and enhancing patient care and outcomes. Prostate cancer lung metastasis represents a clinical conundrum due to its implications for advanced disease progression and the complexities it introduces in treatment planning. As the disease progresses to distant sites such as the lung, the clinical management becomes increasingly intricate, requiring tailored therapeutic strategies to address the unique characteristics of metastatic lesions. This review seeks to synthesize the current state of knowledge surrounding prostate cancer metastasis to the lung, shedding light on the diverse array of clinical presentations encountered, ranging from subtle radiological findings to overt symptomatic manifestations. By examining the diagnostic modalities utilized in identifying this metastasis, including advanced imaging techniques and histopathological analyses, this review aims to provide insights into the diagnostic landscape and the challenges associated with accurately characterizing lung metastatic lesions in prostate cancer patients. Moreover, this review delves into the nuances of therapeutic interventions employed in managing prostate cancer lung metastasis, encompassing systemic treatments such as hormonal therapies and chemotherapy, as well as metastasis-directed therapies including surgery and radiotherapy.
