Search

The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the potential for the emission lines O v] λλ1213.8,1218.3 and He ii λ1215.1 to contaminate flux measurements of Ly α λ1215.7 in the extended nebulae of quasars. We have computed a grid of photoionization models with a substantial range in the slope of the ionizing power law (−1.5 < α < −0.5), gas metallicity (0.01 < Z/Z⊙ < 3.0), gas density (1 < nH < 104 cm−3), and ionization parameter (10−5 < U < 1.0). We find the contribution from He ii λ1215.1 to be negligible, i.e. 2, and find evidence for significant (≥10 per cent) contamination of Ly α fluxes in the majority of cases (84 per cent). We also discuss prospects for using O v] λλ1213.8,1218.3 as a diagnostic for the presence of AGN activity in high-z Ly α emitters, and caution that the presence of significant O v] emission could impact the apparent kinematics of Ly α, potentially mimicking the presence of high-velocity gas outflows.

The role of radio mode feedback in non radio-loud quasars needs to be explored in depth to determine its true importance. Its effects can be identified based on the evidence of interactions between the radio structures and the ambient ionised gas. In this paper we present Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field unit spectroscopic observations of the $\sim70\times30$ kpc$^2$ Ly$\alpha$ halo around the radio galaxy 4C04.11 at $z = 4.5077$. High-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) are hosted by some of the most massive galaxies known at any redshift and are unique markers of concomitant powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and star formation episodes. We map the emission and kinematics of the Ly$\alpha$ across the halo as well as the kinematics and column densities of eight HI absorbing systems at $-3500 < \Delta v < 0$ km s$^{-1}$. We find that the strong absorber at $\Delta v \sim 0\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ has a high areal coverage ($30\times30$ kpc$^2$), being detected across a large extent of the Ly$\alpha$ halo, a significant column density gradient along the southwest to northeast direction, and a velocity gradient along the radio jet axis. We propose that the absorbing structure, which is also seen in CIV and NV absorption, represents an outflowing metal-enriched shell driven by a previous AGN or star formation episode within the galaxy and is now caught up by the radio jet, leading to jet-gas interactions. These observations provide evidence that feedback from AGN in some of the most massive galaxies in the early Universe may play an important role in redistributing material and metals in their environments., Comment: 37 pages, 28 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. We study the ultraviolet (UV) emission-line ratios of a sample of 145 type II quasars (QSO2s) from Sloan Digital Sky Survey iii Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, and compare against a grid of active galactic nucleus (AGN) photoionization models with a range in gas density, gas chemical abundances, and ionization parameter. Most of the quasars are ‘carbon-loud’, with C iv/He ii ratios that are unusually high for the narrow-line region, implying higher than expected gas density (>106 cm−3) and/or significantly supersolar-relative carbon abundance. We also find that solar or supersolar nitrogen abundance and metallicity are required in the majority of our sample, with potentially significant variation between objects. Compared to radio galaxies at similar redshifts (HzRGs; z > 2), the QSO2s are offset to higher N v/He ii, C iv/He ii, and C iii]/He ii, suggesting systematically higher gas density and/or systematically higher C and N abundances. We find no evidence for a systematic difference in the N/C abundance ratio between the two types of objects. Scatter in the N iv]/C iv ratio implies a significant scatter in the N/C abundance ratio among the QSO2s and HzRGs, consistent with differences in the chemical enrichment histories between objects. Interestingly, we find that adopting secondary behaviour for both N and C alleviates the long-standing ‘N iv] problem’. A subset of the QSO2s and HzRGs also appear to be ‘silicon-loud’, with Si iii] relative fluxes suggesting Si/C and Si/O are an order of magnitude above their solar values. Finally, we propose new UV-line criteria to select genuine QSO2s with low-density narrow-line regions.

Forthcoming large photometric surveys for cosmology require precise and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements for the success of their main science objectives. However, to date, no method has been able to produce photo-zs at the required accuracy using only the broad-band photometry that those surveys will provide. An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current methods is a crucial step in the eventual development of an approach to meet this challenge. We report on the performance of 13 photometric redshift code single value redshift estimates and redshift probability distributions (PDZs) on a common set of data, focusing particularly on the 0.2pdbl-pdbl2.6 redshift range that the Euclid mission will probe. We designed a challenge using emulated Euclid data drawn from three photometric surveys of the COSMOS field. The data was divided into two samples: one calibration sample for which photometry and redshifts were provided to the participants; and the validation sample, containing only the photometry to ensure a blinded test of the methods. Participants were invited to provide a redshift single value estimate and a PDZ for each source in the validation sample, along with a rejection flag that indicates the sources they consider unfit for use in cosmological analyses. The performance of each method was assessed through a set of informative metrics, using cross-matched spectroscopic and highly-accurate photometric redshifts as the ground truth. We show that the rejection criteria set by participants are efficient in removing strong outliers, that is to say sources for which the photo-z deviates by more than 0.15(1pdbl+pdblz) from the spectroscopic-redshift (spec-z). We also show that, while all methods are able to provide reliable single value estimates, several machine-learning methods do not manage to produce useful PDZs. We find that no machine-learning method provides good results in the regions of galaxy color-space that are sparsely populated by spectroscopic-redshifts, for example zpdbl> pdbl1. However they generally perform better than template-fitting methods at low redshift (zpdbl< pdbl0.7), indicating that template-fitting methods do not use all of the information contained in the photometry. We introduce metrics that quantify both photo-z precision and completeness of the samples (post-rejection), since both contribute to the final figure of merit of the science goals of the survey (e.g., cosmic shear from Euclid). Template-fitting methods provide the best results in these metrics, but we show that a combination of template-fitting results and machine-learning results with rejection criteria can outperform any individual method. On this basis, we argue that further work in identifying how to best select between machine-learning and template-fitting approaches for each individual galaxy should be pursued as a priority., GD and AG acknowledge the support from the Sinergia program of the Swiss National Science Foundation. We present a detailed study of the kinematic, chemical and excitation properties of the giant Ly$\alpha$ emitting nebula and the giant \ion{H}{I} absorber associated with the $z = 2.92$ radio galaxy MRC 0943--242, using spectroscopic observations from VLT/MUSE, VLT/X-SHOOTER and other instruments. Together, these data provide a wide range of rest-frame wavelength (765 \AA$\,$ -- 6378 \AA$\,$ at $z = 2.92$) and 2D spatial information. We find clear evidence for jet gas interactions affecting the kinematic properties of the nebula, with evidence for both outflows and inflows being induced by radio-mode feedback. We suggest that the regions of relatively lower ionization level, spatially correlated with the radio hotspots, may be due to localised compression of photoionized gas by the expanding radio source, thereby lowering the ionization parameter, or due to a contribution from shock-heating. We find that photoionization of super-solar metallicity gas ($Z/Z_{\odot}$ = 2.1) by an AGN-like continuum ($\alpha$=--1.0) at a moderate ionization parameter ($U$ = 0.018) gives the best overall fit to the complete X-SHOOTER emission line spectrum. We identify a strong degeneracy between column density and Doppler parameter such that it is possible to obtain a reasonable fit to the \ion{H}{I} absorption feature across the range log N(\ion{H}{I}/cm$^{-2}$) = 15.20 and 19.63, with the two best-fitting occurring near the extreme ends of this range. The extended \ion{H}{I} absorber is blueshifted relative to the emission line gas, but shows a systematic decrease in blueshift towards larger radii, consistent with a large scale expanding shell., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables. We present new spectroscopic observations of two high redshift radio galaxies, TXS 0211-122 (z=2.34) and TXS 0828+193 (z=2.57), known to be associated with large Ly$\alpha$ halos. The observations were taken with the slits placed perpendicularly to the radio axis. With access to pre-existing Keck II observations taken with the slit placed along the radio axis we are able to compare the properties of the gas in different regions of the galaxies. In both objects we detect spatially extended Ly$\alpha$ emission perpendicularly to the radio axis. In TXS 0211-122, the flux and velocity profiles of Ly$\alpha$ are strongly affected by HI absorption/scattering. In line with previous studies, we find evidence for outflowing gas along the radio axis which may be the result of jet-gas interactions. In the slit oriented perpendicularly to the radio axis we find less perturbed gas kinematics, suggesting outflows of ionized gas in this object are focused along the radio jet axis. Additionally, we find evidence for a giant, UV-emitting arc or shell-like structure surrounding the radio galaxy Ly$\alpha$ halo, possibly resulting from feedback activity. In TXS 0828+193 a large Ly$\alpha$ halo ($\sim$56 kpc) is detected perpendicularly to the radio axis. Along both slit position angles we find evidence for outflowing gas, which we argue is part of an approximately spherical, expanding shell or bubble of gas powered by feedback activity in the central regions of the galaxy. Our results suggest a diversity in the spatial distribution of ionized outflows in powerful radio galaxies at z$\sim$2.5.

We observe the radio galaxy PKS 1934-63 (at $z=0.1825$) using MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The radio source is GigaHertz Peaked Spectrum and compact (0.13 kpc), implying an early stage of evolution ($\leq 10^4$ yr). Our data show an interacting pair of galaxies, projected separation 9.1 kpc, velocity difference $\Delta(v)=216$ km $\rm s^{-1}$. The larger galaxy is a $\rm M_{*}\simeq 10^{11}M_{\odot}$ spheroidal with the emission-line spectrum of a high-excitation young radio AGN, e.g. strong [OI]6300 and [OIII]5007. Emission-line ratios indicate a large contribution to the line luminosity from high-velocity shocks ($\simeq 550$ km $\rm s^{-1}$) . The companion is a non-AGN disk galaxy, with extended $\rm H\alpha$ emission from which its star-formation rate is estimated as $\rm 0.61~M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$. Both galaxies show rotational velocity gradients in $\rm H\alpha$ and other lines, with the interaction being prograde-prograde. The SE-NW velocity gradient of the AGN host is misaligned from the E-W radio axis, but aligned with a previously discovered central ultraviolet source, and a factor 2 greater in amplitude in $\rm H\alpha$ than in other (forbidden) lines (e.g. [OIII]5007). This could be produced by a fast rotating (100-150 km $\rm s^{-1}$) disk with circumnuclear star-formation. We also identify a broad component of [OIII]5007 emission, blueshifted with a velocity gradient aligned with the radio jets, and associated with outflow. However, the broad component of [OI]6300 is redshifted. In spectral fits, both galaxies have old stellar populations plus $\sim 0.1\%$ of very young stars, consistent with the galaxies undergoing first perigalacticon, triggering infall and star-formation from $\sim 40$ Myr ago followed by the radio outburst.

Context. The most massive galaxies (Mstellar ≥ 1011 M⊙) in the local Universe are characterized by a bulge-dominated morphology and old stellar populations, in addition to being confined to a tight mass-size relation. Identifying their main components can provide insights into their formation mechanisms and subsequent mass assembly. Aims. Taking advantage of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CANDELS data, we analyze the lowest redshift (z < 0.5) massive galaxies in the H and I band in order to disentangle their structural constituents and study possible faint non-axisymmetric features. Methods. Our final sample consists of 17 massive galaxies. Due to the excellent HST spatial resolution for intermediate redshift objects, they are hard to model by purely automatic parametric fitting algorithms. We performed careful single and double (bulge-disk decompositions) Sérsic fits to their galaxy surface brightness profiles. We compare the model color profiles with the observed ones and also derive multi-component global effective radii attempting to obtain a better interpretation of the mass-size relation. Additionally, we test the robustness of our measured structural parameters via simulations. Results. We find that the Sérsic index does not offer a good proxy for the visual morphological type for our sample of massive galaxies. Our derived multi-component effective radii give a better description of the size of our sample galaxies than those inferred from single Sérsic models with GALFIT. Our galaxy population lies on the scatter of the local mass-size relation, indicating that these massive galaxies have not experienced a significant growth in size since z ∼ 0.5. Interestingly, the few outliers are late-type galaxies, indicating that spheroids must reach the local mass-size relation earlier. For most of our sample galaxies, both single- and multi-component Sérsic models with GALFIT show substantial systematic deviations from the observed surface brightness profiles in the outskirts. These residuals may be partly due to several factors, namely a nonoptimal data reduction for low surface brightness features or the existence of prominent stellar haloes for massive galaxies, or they could also arise from conceptual shortcomings of parametric 2D image decomposition tools. They consequently propagate into galaxy color profiles. This is a significant obstacle to the exploration of the structural evolution of galaxies, which calls for a critical assessment and refinement of existing surface photometry techniques.

We present observations at 1.1 mm towards 16 powerful radio galaxies and a radio-quiet quasar at 0.5 > z > 6.3 acquired with the AzTEC camera mounted at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment to study the spatial distribution of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) towards possible protocluster regions. The survey covers a total area of 1.01 sq deg with rms depths of 0.52-1.44 mJy and detects 728 sources above 3σ. We find overdensities of a factor of ~2 in the source counts of three individual fields (4C+23.56, PKS1138-262, and MRC0355-037) over areas of ~200 sq deg. When combining all fields, the source-count analysis finds an overdensity that reaches a factor ≳ 3 at S1.1mm = 4mJy covering a 1.5-arcmin-radius area centred on the active galactic nucleus. The large size of our maps allows us to establish that beyond a radius of 1.5 arcmin, the radial surface density of SMGs falls to that of a blank field. In addition, we find a trend for SMGs to align closely to a perpendicular direction with respect to the radio jets of the powerful central radio galaxies (73-14 +13 deg). This misalignment is found over projected comoving scales of 4-20 Mpc, departs from perfect alignment (0 deg) by ~5σ, and apparently has no dependence on SMG luminosity. Under the assumption that the AzTEC sources are at the redshift of the central radio galaxy, the misalignment reported here can be interpreted as SMGs preferentially inhabiting mass-dominant filaments funnelling material towards the protoclusters, which are also the parent structures of the radio galaxies.

Using VIMOS-IFU observations, we study the interstellar medium (ISM) of two star-forming dwarf galaxies, UM 461 and Mrk 600. Our aim was to search for the existence of metallicity inhomogeneities that might arise from infall of nearly pristine gas feeding ongoing localized star-formation. The IFU data allowed us to study the impact of external gas accretion on the chemical evolution as well as the ionised gas kinematics and morphologies of these galaxies. Both systems show signs of morphological distortions, including cometary-like morphologies. We analysed the spatial variation of 12 + log(O/H) abundances within both galaxies using the direct method (T_e), the widely applied HII-CHI-mistry code, as well as by employing different standard calibrations. For UM 461 our results show that the ISM is fairly well mixed, at large scales, however we find an off-centre and low-metallicity region with 12 + log(O/H) < 7.6 in the SW part of the brightest HII region, using the direct method. This result is consistent with the recent infall of a low mass metal-poor dwarf or HI cloud into the region now exhibiting the lowest metallicity, which also displays localized perturbed neutral and ionized gas kinematics. Mrk 600 in contrast, appears to be chemically homogeneous on both large and small scales. We investigate the spiral galaxy NGC 5394, which is strongly interacting with the larger spiral NGC 5395 (the pair is Arp 84), using optical integral-field spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey. We report the discovery of a ~100 kpc ionized nebula associated with the radio quiet type 2 quasar (QSO2) nicknamed the "Teacup" (z=0.085). The giant nebula is among the largest known around active galaxies at any z. We propose that it is part of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the QSO2 host, which has been populated with tidal debris by galactic interactions. This rich gaseous medium has been rendered visible due to the illumination by the powerful active nucleus (AGN). Subsolar abundances (~0.5Z(sun)) are tentatively favored by AGN photoionization models. We also report the detection of coronal emission (Fe+6) from the NE bubble, at ~9 kpc from the AGN. The detection of coronal lines at such large distances from the AGN and the [NII]/Halpha, [SII]/Halpha, [OI]/Halpha optical emission line ratios of the giant nebula are consistent with the fading quasar scenario proposed by Gagne et al. (2014). The fading rate appears to have been faster in the last ~46,000 yr. Deep wide field integral field spectroscopy of giant nebulae around powerful AGN such as the "Teacup's" with instruments such as MUSE on VLT opens up a way to detect and study the elusive material from the CGM around massive active galaxies thanks to the illumination by the luminous AGN., 12 pages, 6 figures. We report the discovery of a radio quiet type 2 quasar (SDSS J165315.06+234943.0 nicknamed the "Beetle" at z=0.103) with unambiguous evidence for active galactic nucleus (AGN) radio induced feedback acting across a total extension of ~46 kpc and up to ~26 kpc from the AGN. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first radio quiet system where radio induced feedback has been securely identified at >>several kpc from the AGN. Turbulent gas is also found far from the radio axis, ~25 kpc in the perpendicular direction. We propose a scenario in which the radio structures have perforated the interstellar medium of the galaxy and escaped into the circumgalactic medium. While advancing, they have interacted with in-situ gas modifying its properties. Our results show that jets of modest power can be the dominant feedback mechanism acting across huge volumes in radio quiet systems, including highly accreting luminous AGN, where radiative mode feedback may be expected., 20 pages, 13 figures. We performed long-slit optical spectroscopy (GTC-OSIRIS) of 6 radio-loud QSOs at redshifts $2

Aims. We explore potential mechanisms to produce extremely high Lyα/HeII flux ratios, or to enhance the observed number of Lyα photons per incident ionizing photon, in extended active galactic nucleus (AGN) photoionized nebulae at high-redshift. Methods. We computed models to simulate, in the low density regime, photoionization of interstellar gas by the radiation field of a luminous AGN. We have explored the impact of ionization parameter, gas metallicity, ionizing spectrum, electron energy distribution, and cloud viewing angle on the relative fluxes of Lyα, HeII and other lines, and on the observed number of Lyα photons per incident ionizing photon. We have compared our model results with recent observations of quasar Lyα halos at z ∼ 3.5. Results. Low ionization parameter, a relatively soft or filtered ionizing spectrum, low gas metallicity, κ-distributed electron energies, or reflection of Lyα photons by neutral hydrogen can all result in significantly enhanced Lyα relative to other lines (≥10%), with log Lyα/HeII reaching values of up to 4.6. In the cases of low gas metallicity, reflection by HI, or a hard or filtered ionizing spectrum, the observed number of Lyα photons per incident ionizing photon is itself significantly enhanced above the nominal Case B value of 0.66 due to collisional excitation, reaching values as high as 5.3 in an “extreme case” model which combines several of these effects. We find that at low gas metallicity (e.g. Z/Z⊙ = 0.1) the production of Lyα photons is predominantly via collisional excitation rather than by recombination. In addition, we find that the collisional excitation of Lyα becomes much more efficient if the ionizing continuum spectrum has been pre-filtered through an optically thin screen of gas closer to the AGN (e.g. by a wide-angle, feedback-driven outflow). We also show that the Lyα and HeII emission line ratios of a sample of previously studied quasars at z ∼ 3.5 are consistent with AGN-photoionization of gas with moderate to low metallicity and/or low ionization parameter, without requiring exotic ionization or excitation mechanisms such as strong line-transfer effects. In addition, we present a set of UV-optical diagnostic diagrams to distinguish between photoionization by Pop III stars and photoionization by an AGN.

Aim Selection of patients for investigation of suspected colorectal cancer is difficult. One possible improvement may be to measure DNA isolated from exfoliated cells collected from the rectum. Method This was a cohort study in a surgical clinic. Participants were aged ≥40 years and referred for investigation of suspected colorectal cancer. Exclusion criteria were inflammatory bowel disease, previous gastrointestinal malignancy, or recent investigation. A sample of the mucocellular layer of the rectum was taken with an adapted proctoscope (the Colonix system). Haemoglobin, mean cell volume, ferritin, carcino-embryonic antigen and faecal occult bloods were tested. Analysis was by logistic regression. This pilot study aimed to assess an original test based on the analysis of exfoliated colonocytes as a new approach to colorectal cancer (CRC) detection. DNA was isolated from exfoliated cells collected from the surface of the rectal mucosa by a standardized minimally invasive procedure in a case-control trial involving 66 patients with CRC diagnosis and 110 healthy volunteers (age 50-70). PicoGreen staining and quantitative real-time PCR (QRTPCR) were used for DNA quantification. Mean DNA scores in microg/ml obtained for the control and cancer groups were 2.1 (95% CI 1.7-2.5) and 9.0 (CI 6.7-11.2) respectively (p < 0.001) for PicoGreen and 0.8 (CI 0.6-0.9) and 3.8 (CI 1.9-5.7) respectively (p = 0.003) for QRTPCR. The PicoGreen assay better detected CRC presence. At DNA score cut-off point of 2.5 microg/ml this assay gave sensitivities of 77.8% (CI 52.4-93.6) for proximal tumours, 91.4% (CI 76.9-98.2) for distal CRC and 86.8% (CI 74.7-94.5) for all CRC with specificity at 74.0% (CI 64.0-82.4). Increasing the cut-off point to 5.0 microg/ml resulted in sensitivities of 38.9% (CI 17.3-64.3) for proximal tumours, 71.4% (CI 53.7-85.4) for distal CRC and 60.4% (CI 46.0-73.5) for all CRC. Specificity for this cut-off point increased to 94.8% (CI 88.3-98.3). The new procedure of exfoliated cell collection from the surface of the rectal mucosa is a simple, safe and well-tolerated technique providing high quality cells. These early results suggest that exfoliated cell collection in combination with DNA quantification can potentially be employed as a tool for CRC early detection.

The morphological and spectroscopic properties of the giant (>60 kpc) Ly-alpha nebulae associated with three radio galaxies at z~2.5 (MRC 1558-003, MRC 2025-218 and MRC 0140-257) have been investigated using integral field spectroscopic data obtained with VIMOS on VLT. The morphologies are varied. The nebula of one source has a centrally peaked, rounded appearance. In the other two objects, it consists of two spatial components. We present an investigation into the possible relationship between side-to-side asymmetries of powerful radio galaxies at high redshift, with the goal of understanding the geometry, orientation and gas dynamics of these sources. Our sample consists of 11 radio galaxies at 2.3

About 54% of radio galaxies at z>3 and 8% of radio galaxies at 2 2) radio galaxies. These Ly-alpha excess objects (LAEs) show Ly-alpha/HeII values consistent with or above standard photoionization model predictions. We show that the most successful explanation is the presence of a young stellar population which provides the extra supply of ionizing photons required to explain the Ly-alpha excess in at least the most extreme LAEs (probably in all of them). The measurement of unusually high Ly-alpha ratios in the extended gas of some high redshift radio galaxies suggests that star formation activity occurs in spatial scales of tens of kpc. We argue that, although the fraction of LAEs may be incompletely determined, both at 2 3, the much larger fraction of LAEs found at z>3 is a genuine redshift evolution and not due to selection effects. Therefore, our results suggest that the radio galaxy phenomenon is more often associated with a massive starburst at z>3 than at z

We present optical imaging and long slit spectroscopic observations of nine luminous type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) within the redshift range 0.3 < z < 0.6 based on Very Large Telescope Focal Reducer and Low Dispersion Spectrograph (VLT FORS2) data. Most objects (6/9) are high luminosity Seyfert 2, and three are type 2 quasars (QSO2), with our sample extending to lower luminosity than previous works. Seven out of nine objects (78 per cent) showmorphological evidence for interactions or mergers in the form of disturbed morphologies and/or peculiar features such as tidal tails, amorphous haloes, or compact emission line knots. The detection rate of morphological evidence for interaction is consistent with those found during previous studies of QSO2 at similar z, suggesting that the merger rate is independent of AGN power at the high end of the AGN luminosity function.We find the emission line flux spatial profiles are often dominated by the often spatially unresolved central source. In addition, all but one of our samples is associated with much fainter, extended line emission. We find these extended emission line structures have a variety of origins and ionization mechanisms: star-forming companions, tidal features, or extended ionized nebulae. AGN related processes dominate the excitation of the nuclear gas. A significant minority of high redshift radio galaxy (HzRG) candidates show extremely red broad band colours and remain undetected in emission lines after optical `discovery' spectroscopy. In this paper we present deep GTC optical imaging and spectroscopy of one such radio galaxy, 5C 7.245, with the aim of better understanding the nature of these enigmatic objects. Our g-band image shows no significant emission coincident with the stellar emission of the host galaxy, but does reveal faint emission offset by ~3" (26 kpc) therefrom along a similar position angle to that of the radio jets, reminiscent of the `alignment effect' often seen in the optically luminous HzRGs. This offset g-band source is also detected in several UV emission lines, giving it a redshift of 1.609, with emission line flux ratios inconsistent with photoionization by young stars or an AGN, but consistent with ionization by fast shocks. Based on its unusual gas geometry, we argue that in 5C 7.245 we are witnessing a rare (or rarely observed) phase in the evolution of quasar hosts when stellar mass assembly, accretion onto the back hole, and powerful feedback activity has eradicated its cold gas from the central ~20 kpc, but is still in the process of cleansing cold gas from its extended halo., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the nature of seven unusual radio galaxies from the 5C catalogue that were previously known to have extremely red R-K colours, and for which emission lines were previously found to be weak or absent in their optical spectra. We present and discuss u, g, or r images of these radio galaxies, obtained using the Optical System for Imaging and low-Intermediate-Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) at the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We have detected all seven targets in our g-band imaging. Their optical emission is extended, and we tentatively detect a radio-optical alignment effect in this sample. A subset of our sample (three sources) shows broad-band spectral energy distributions that flatten out near the wavelength range of the g-band, implying a dominant contribution there due to young stars and/or scattered or reprocessed radiation from the active nucleus., Comment: 4 pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

In this study we present high-resolution VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph integral field unit spectroscopy (VIMOS-IFU) of the extremely metal-poor HII/blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 65. The optical appearance of this galaxy shows clearly a cometary morphology with a bright main body and an extended and diffuse stellar tail. We focus on the detection of metallicity gradients or inhomogeneities as expected if the ongoing star-formation activity is sustained by the infall/accretion of metal-poor gas. No evidences of significant spatial variations of abundances were found within our uncertainties. However, our findings show a slight anticorrelation between gas metallicity and star-formation rate at spaxel scales, in the sense that high star-formation is found in regions of low-metallicity, but the scatter in this relation indicates that the metals are almost fully diluted. Our observations show the presence of extended H$\alpha$ emission in the stellar tail of the galaxy. We estimated that the mass of the ionized gas in the tail M(HII)$_{tail} \sim$1.7$\times$10$^5$ M$_{\odot}$ corresponds with $\sim$ 24 per cent of the total mass of the ionized gas in the galaxy. We found that the H$\alpha$ velocity dispersion of the main body and the tail of the galaxy are comparable with the one found in the neutral gas by previous studies. This suggests that the ionized gas still retains the kinematic memory of its parental cloud and likely a common origin. Finally, we suggest that the infall/accretion of cold gas from the outskirts of the galaxy and/or minor merger/interaction may have produced the almost flat abundance gradient and the cometary morphology in Tol 65., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS. Keck LRISp optical spectropolarimetry and VLT ISAAC NIR spectroscopy of an overlapping sample of z ∼2.5 radio galaxies has provided a set of uniquely high quality spectra stretching from Ly α to H α . The measurement of emission and absorption line strengths, continuum polarization and SED allow us to quantify the various emission and scattering mechanisms that comprise the observed spectra. We identify this epoch as critical in the chemical evolution of massive spheroids and show that, while star formation must be very active, most of the UV/optical radiation we see from these luminous sources derives from the AGN.

We present a summary of the results from the kinematic study of the extended gas in a sample of 10 high redshift radio galaxies (z∼2.5) based on high S/N Keck spectroscopy. We find that, in addition to the typical high surface brightness kinematically perturbed regions, giant low surface brightness quiescent haloes are detected in all objects. We suggest that we have resolved kinematically the emission from ambient non-shocked gas (the quiescent haloes) and the emission from (jet induced) shocked gas. The haloes often extend for more than 100 kpc and sometimes beyond the radio structures. The quasar continuum is the dominant source for the ionization of this very extended gas. The kinematic properties are consistent with gravitational motions and are similar to those seen in low redshift radio galaxies. They are enriched with heavy elements at tens of kpc from the active nucleus. The discovery of the giant quiescent haloes in all objects suggests that they are a common ingredient of high redshift radio galaxies. Although the nature of the haloes—be they disks, spherical envelopes or cooling flow nebulae—is not clear, they are giant gaseous reservoirs within which the radio galaxy is embedded. The giant elliptical galaxy might have grown (or still be growing) from the giant halo.

We investigate the flux ratio between the 1335 A and 2326 A lines of singly ionized carbon in the extended narrow line regions of type 2 quasars at z~2.5. We find the observed CII 1335 / CII] 2326 flux ratio, which is not sensitive to the C/H abundance ratio, to be often several times higher than predicted by the canonical AGN photoionization models that use solar metallicity and a Maxwell-Boltzmann electron energy distribution. We study several potential solutions for this discrepancy: low gas metallicity, shock ionization, continuum fluorescence, and kappa-distributed electron energies. Although we cannot definitively distinguish between several of the proposed solutions, we argue that a kappa distribution gives the more natural explanation. We have identified ionized outflows in the narrow line region of all but one SDSS type 2 quasars (QSO2) at z1000 cm-3) and covers a region the size of a few kpc. We present results of CO(1-0) spectroscopic observations of 10 Sloan Digital Sky Survey type 2 quasars (QSO2) at z ~ 0.2-0.3 observed with the 30-m IRAM radio telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We report five new confirmed CO(1-0) detections and one tentative detection. They have L'CO ~ several × 109 K km s-1 pc2, while upper limits for the non-detections are L'CO < 3s = several × 109 K km s-1 pc2. This study increases the total number of QSO2 with CO measurements at z 1 to 20, with a 50 per cent detection rate. The vast majority are at z ~ 0.1-0.4. Assuming a conversion factor α = 0.8 M⊙(K km s-1pc2)-1, the implied molecular gas masses are in the range MH2 4 × 108 to ~5 × 109 M⊙. We compare with samples of type 1 quasars (QSO1), luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. We find no difference in the molecular gas content of QSO1 and QSO2 of a given infrared luminosity, although the QSO2 sample is affected by small number statistics. This result, if confirmed, is consistent with the unification model for quasars. QSO2 fall on the L'COversus z, L'COversus LFIR and λ = LFIR LCO versus LFIR correlations defined by quasars at different z. The location of the QSO2 in these diagrams is discussed in comparison with samples of QSO1, luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies, and high-z submm sources. CO(1-0) has full width at half-maximum (FWHM) ~ 180-370 km s-1 when detected, with a variety of kinematic profiles (single or double horned). In general, the CO line is narrower than [O III]5007, as observed in low-z QSO1, with FWHM[O III]/FWHMCO ~ 1-2). This probably reveals different spatial sizes and/or geometry of the ionized and molecular phases and a higher sensitivity of the [O III] emission to non-gravitational motions, such as outflows. Considering the z ~ 0.1-0.4 range, where CO measurements for both QSO1 and QSO2 exist, we find no difference in FWHMCO between them, although this result is tentative. We present spatially resolved spectropolarimetic measurements of the 100-kpc scale gaseous environment of the z=2.34 radio galaxy TXS 0211-122. The polarization level of the narrow Ly-alpha emission is low centrally (P, Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

Using long-slit optical spectroscopy obtained at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, we have examined the gaseous environment of the radio-loud quasar TXS 1436+157 (z=2.54), previously known to be associated with a large Ly-alpha nebula and a spatially extended Ly-alpha-absorbing structure. From the Ly-alpha nebula we measure kinematic properties consistent with infall at a rate of about 10-100 M./yr - more than sufficient to power a quasar at the top of the luminosity function. The absorbing structure lies outside of the Ly-alpha nebula, at a radius of >40 kpc from the quasar. Against the bright unresolved continuum and line emission from the quasar, we detect in absorption the NV 1239,1241, CIV 1548,1551 and SiIV 1394,1403 doublets, with no unambiguous detection of absorption lines from any low-ionization species of metal. The metal column densities, taken together with the HI column density measurement from the literature, indicate that the absorbing gas is predominantly ionized by the quasar, has a mass of hydrogen of >1.6 x 10E11 M., a gas density of 18 pc, and a covering factor approaching unity. While this absorbing structure is clearly not composed of pristine gas, it has an extremely low metallicity, with ionization models providing a 3-sigma limit of 12+log(O/H), Accepted for publication by MNRAS. 12 Pages, 3 tables, 6 figures

We present long-slit spectroscopy and imaging data obtained with FORS2 on the Very Large Telescope of 13 optically selected type 2 quasars at z~0.3-0.6 from the original sample of Zakamska et al. (2003). The sample is likely to be affected by different selection biases. We investigate the evidence for: a) mergers/interactions b) star formation activity in the neighborhood of the quasars and c) extended emission line regions and their nature. Evidence for mergers/interactions is found in 5/13 objects. This is a lower limit for our sample, given the shallowness of most of our continuum images. Although AGN photoionization cannot be totally discarded, line ratios consistent with stellar photoionization are found in general in companion galaxies/knots/nuclei near these same objects. On the contrary, the gas in the neighborhood of the quasar nucleus shows line ratios inconsistent with HII galaxies and typical of AGN photoionized nebulae. A natural scenario to explain the observations is that star formation is ongoing in companion galaxies/knots/nuclei, possibly triggered by the interactions. These systems are, therefore, composite in their emission line properties showing a combination of AGN and star formation features. Extended emission line regions (EELRs) have been found in 7/13 objects, although this fraction might be higher if a complete spatial coverage around the quasars was performed. The sizes vary between few and up to 64 kpc. In general, the EELRs apparently consist of an extended nebula associated with the quasar. In at least one case the EELR is associated with ionized tidal features.

We estimate black hole masses and Eddington ratios for a sample of 81 young radio galaxies (42 CSS +39 GPS). We find that the average black hole (BH) mass of these young radio galaxies is ~8.3, which is less than that of radio loud QSOs and low redshift radio galaxies. The CSS/GPS sources have relatively high Eddington ratios, with an average value of =-0.75, which are similar to those of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). This suggests that young radio galaxies may not only be in the early stages of their radio activity, but also in the early stage of their accretion activity. We find that the young radio galaxies as a class deviate systematically from M_bh-\sigma relation defined by nearby inactive galaxies, when using [O III] as a surrogate for stellar velocity dispersion, \sigma_* . We also find that the deviation of the [O III] line width is correlated with the Eddington ratio and sources with Lbol/LEdd~1 have the largest deviations, which are similar to those of radio quiet QSOs/NLS1s (radio jets is absent or weak). A similar result has been obtained for 9 linear radio Seyfert galaxies. We present the results of the kinematic study of the extended gas in a sample of 10 high redshift radio galaxies (z~2.5) based on high signal to noise Keck II and VLT long slit spectroscopy. In addition to the typical high surface brightness kinematically perturbed regions (FWHM and velocity shifts >1000 km/s), we find in all objects giant low surface brightness halos which show quieter kinematics with typical emission line FWHM and velocity shifts of several hundred km/s. The detection of giant quiescent halos in all objects suggests that they could be a common ingredient of high redshift radio galaxies. The radio galaxies seem to be embedded within the halos. We present results on the spectroscopic study of the ionized gas in the high redshift radio galaxy USS0828+193 at z=2.57. Thanks to the high S/N of the emission lines in the Keck spectrum, we have been able to perform a detailed kinematic study by means of the spectral decomposition of the emission line profiles. This study reveals the existence of two types of material in this object: a) a low surface brightness component with apparent quiescent kinematics consistent with gravitational motions and b) a perturbed component with rather extreme kinematics. The quiescent halo extends across the entire object for ~80 kpc. It is enriched with heavy elements and apparently ionized by the continuum from the active nucleus. The properties of the quiescent halo and its origin are discussed in this paper. We propose that it could be part of a structure that surrounds the entire object, although its nature is not clear (a rotating disc? low surface brightness satellites? a cooling flow nebula? material ejected in galactic winds? other?)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 8 Figures

Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are chemically, and possibly dynamically, primordial objects in the local Universe. Our objective is to characterize the HI content of the XMP galaxies as a class, using as a reference the list of 140 known local XMPs compiled by Morales-Luis et al. (2011). We have observed 29 XMPs, which had not been observed before at 21 cm, using the Effelsberg radio telescope. This information was complemented with HI data published in literature for a further 53 XMPs. In addition, optical data from the literature provided morphologies, stellar masses, star-formation rates and metallicities. Effelsberg HI integrated flux densities are between 1 and 15 Jy km/s, while line widths are between 20 and 120 km/s. HI integrated flux densities and line widths from literature are in the range 0.1 - 200 Jy km/s and 15 - 150 km/s, respectively. Of the 10 new Effelsberg detections, two sources show an asymmetric double-horn profile, while the remaining sources show either asymmetric (7 sources) or symmetric (1 source) single-peak 21 cm line profiles. An asymmetry in the HI line profile is systematically accompanied by an asymmetry in the optical morphology. Typically, the g-band stellar mass-to-light ratios are ~0.1, whereas the HI gas mass-to-light ratios may be up to 2 orders of magnitude larger. Moreover, HI gas-to-stellar mass ratios fall typically between 10 and 20, denoting that XMPs are extremely gas-rich. We find an anti-correlation between the HI gas mass-to-light ratio and the luminosity, whereby fainter XMPs are more gas-rich than brighter XMPs, suggesting that brighter sources have converted a larger fraction of their HI gas into stars. The dynamical masses inferred from the HI line widths imply that the stellar mass does not exceed 5% of the dynamical mass, while the \ion{H}{i} mass constitutes between 20 and 60% of the dynamical mass. We present a study of correlations between the elemental abundances and galaxy morphologies of 91 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) at z=0.20-0.35 with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 data. We classify the morphologies of the galaxies as either 'disturbed' or 'undisturbed', by visual inspection of the SDSS images, and using the Gini coefficient and M_20. We derive oxygen and nitrogen abundances using the T_e method. We find that a substantial fraction of BCGs with disturbed morphologies, indicative of merger remnants, show relatively high N/O and low O/H abundance ratios. The majority of the disturbed BCGs exhibit higher N/O values at a given O/H value compared to the morphologically undisturbed galaxies, implying more efficient nitrogen enrichment in disturbed BCGs. We detect Wolf-Rayet (WR) features in only a handful of the disturbed BCGs, which appears to contradict the idea that WR stars are responsible for high nitrogen abundance. Combining these results with Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) GR6 ultraviolet (UV) data, we find that the majority of the disturbed BCGs show systematically lower values of the H alpha to near-UV star formation rate ratio. The equivalent width of the H beta emission line is also systematically lower in the disturbed BCGs. Based on these results, we infer that disturbed BCGs have undergone star formation over relatively longer time scales, resulting in a more continuous enrichment of nitrogen. The purpose of the study was to explore the potential of direct exfoliated colonocyte collection from human rectal mucosa for colorectal cancer screening. A special device was designed for standardized collection of exfoliated cells from the surface of human rectal mucosa. Material was collected from 120 outpatients selected for colonoscopy and 36 patients with confirmed diagnosis of colorectal cancer or large polyps. Determination of total DNA amounts in the collected samples (DNA scores) by PicoGreen assay and real-time PCR was employed alongside cytological assessment. Well preserved cells with cytological patterns characteristic for different colorectal conditions (cancer, inflammatory bowel disease) were detected in the collected material. In the outpatient group DNA scores were higher in patients with cancer and inflammatory bowel disease compared to those with no abnormalities detected, diverticular disease and small polyps (P
