ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Currently, approximately 144 new species of Brazilian beetles are described each year, and this average is projected to increase in the next decade to 180 species per year, or about one new Brazilian beetle every two days.

Lobiopa insularis is a newly reported pest of strawberry in Argentina. We investigated characteristics of its biology in the laboratory, including survivorship and reproduction. We also estimated population growth for L. insularis fed ripe strawberry fruits. Lobiopa insularis was not observed ovipositing on strawberry fruits. A higher proportion of egg masses were recorded from a depth of 1 cm within the soil than on either the soil surface or deeper than 1cm (i.e. between 1and 2 cm) within the soil. The duration of preimaginal developmental stages represented ~18.5% of the total life cycle, while the adult stage represented 81.5%. Survival from egg to adult was 64.20% and mean longevity of females and males adults was 121.84, (SE = 8.86) and 118.58 (SE = 5.90) days, respectively. Females laid eggs only when they were with a male, so reproductive period was dependent on male presence. The number of eggs/female/day was 18.01 (SE = 1.71); and total fecundity was 1655 (ES = 249.53) eggs/female. The long life span of adults and high reproductive output, i.e high fecundity and long reproductive period, indicate that availability and concentration of suitable developmental resources are important factors in the population dynamics of Lobiopa insularis associated with strawberry crops.

The Nitidulidae (sap beetles) and Kateretidae (short-winged flower beetles) from New Brunswick are surveyed. Forty-six species have now been recorded in the province, twenty-nine of which are newly recorded in New Brunswick. Epuraea obliquus Hatch, is removed from New Brunswick's faunal list. The distribution and bionomics of newly recorded species is summarized. The New Brunswick fauna consist of 33 Nearctic species, four Holarctic species, and nine adventive species. Historical early dates of detection of all nine adventive species found in the province are provided.

IntroductionExposure to elevated temperatures during incubation is known to induce epigenetic changes that are associated with immunological and stress-response differences at a later age. Reports on its effects on the adipose tissue are still scarce. In this experiment, we investigated the effect of embryonic heat conditioning (EHC) on growth, adipose tissue mRNA and global DNA methylation in broiler chicks at day 4 post-hatch.MethodsFertile eggs were divided into two groups: control and EHC. Eggs in the control group were incubated at 37.8°C and 80% relative humidity from day 0 to day 18.5 (E0 to E18.5). The EHC eggs were subjected to an intermittent increase in temperature to 39.5°C and 80% relative humidity from E7 to E16 for 12 h (07:30–19:30) per day. On day 4 post-hatch, control and EHC chicks were subjected to 36°C using three time points: 0 (no heat challenge serving as the control), and 2 and 12 h relative to start of the heat challenge. Fifteen chicks were sampled from each group for every timepoint. Body weight was recorded before euthanasia and subcutaneous adipose tissue was collected.ResultsBody weights were similar in control and EHC groups. Diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2) mRNA was lower in the EHC group at time 0 relative to control. Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) mRNA was greater in the EHC than control group at the 0 h timepoint. Heat challenge affected adipose tissue DNA methylation, with methylation highest at 12 h into the heat challenge.DiscussionThese findings highlight the dynamic molecular responses of chicks to heat stress during early post-hatch development and suggest that EHC may affect heat stress responses and adipose tissue development through mechanisms involving lipid remodeling and DNA methylation.

Oleuropein, a phenolic compound derived from olives, has known glucoregulatory effects in mammalian models but effects in birds are unknown. We investigated effects of dietary supplementation and exogenous administration of oleuropein on broiler chick feed intake and glucose homeostasis during the first 7 days post-hatch. One hundred and forty-eight day-of-hatch broiler chicks were randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments with varying oleuropein concentrations (0, 250, 500, or 1,000 mg/kg). Body weight and breast muscle and liver weights were recorded on day 7. In the next experiment, chicks received intraperitoneal (IP) injections of oleuropein at doses of 0 (vehicle), 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg on day 4 post-hatch, with feed intake and blood glucose levels measured thereafter. Lastly, chicks fed a control diet were fasted and administered intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of oleuropein at doses of 0, 50, 100, or 200 μg, after which feed intake was recorded. Results indicated that IP and ICV injections led to decreased feed intake, primarily at 60 min post-injection, with effects diminishing by 90 min in the IP study. Blood glucose levels decreased 1-h post-IP injection at higher oleuropein doses. These findings suggest that oleuropein acts as a mild appetite suppressant and influences energy metabolism in broiler chickens.
