Abstract

Introduction: With the steady rise in interest in e-learning and the sudden boost provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic, it becomes necessary to explore the e-learning experience within the medical community in the MENA region. Methods: An online survey was conducted during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (June 15 – October 15, 2020). Results: Seventy-eight vascular surgeons and trainees from 16 countries participated. 88% of the participants were male. 55% attended more than 4 activities. More than half of the activities did not lead to any official certification. Topic was the primary determinant for attending an activity. National societies and social media played a major role in disseminating activity-related information. Lack of time, increased workload, differences in time zone, and technical issues were the main obstacles cited. 84.7% of the participants had a positive impression. Conclusion: As the COVID-19 pandemic boosted e-learning activities in vascular surgery, a shift was observed in the learning mode and new leadership skills were called upon. Novel ways of quality control are required.

Abstract

This dataset supports the findings of the vascular e-Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic survey (the EL-COVID survey). The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union was taken into consideration in all steps of data handling. The survey was approved by the institutional ethics committee of the Primary Investigator and an online English survey consisting of 18 questions was developed ad-hoc. A bilingual English-Mandarin version of the questionnaire was developed according to the instructions of the Chinese Medical Association in order to be used in mainland People's Republic of China. Differences between the two questionnaires were minor and did affect the process of data collection. Both questionnaires were hosted online.The EL-COVID survey was advertised through major social media. All national and regional contributors contacted their respective colleagues through direct messaging on social media or by email. Eight national societies or groups supported the dissemination of the EL-COVID survey.The data provided demographics information of the EL-COVID participants and an insight on the level of difficulty in accessing or citing previously attended online activities and whether participants were keen on citing these activities in their Curricula Vitae. A categorization of additional comments made by the participants are also based on the data.The survey responses were filtered, anonymized and submitted to descriptive analysis of percentage.

3. Forty hours with a traumatic carotid transection: A diagnostic caveat and review of the contemporary management of penetrating neck trauma

Abstract

Although penetrating neck trauma (PNT) is uncommon, it is associated with the significant morbidity and mortality. The management of PNT has changed significantly over the past 50 years. A radiological assessment now is a vital part of the management with a traditional surgical exploration. A 22 years old male was assaulted by a screwdriver and sustained multiple penetrating neck injuries. A contrast CT scan revealed a focal pseudoaneurysm in the left common carotid artery bulb. There was no active bleeding or any other vascular injuries and the patient remained haemodynamically stable. In view of these findings, he was initially managed conservatively without an open surgical exploration. However, the patient was noted to have an acute drop in his hemoglobin count overnight post injury and the catheter directed angiography showed active bleeding from the pseudoaneurysm. Surgical exploration 40 hours following the initial injury revealed a penetrating injury through both arterial walls of the left carotid bulb which was repaired with a great saphenous vein patch. A percutaneous drain was inserted in the carotid triangle and a course of intravenous antibiotics for five days was commenced. The patient recovered well with no complications and remained asymptomatic at five months followup. The complete set of builders'plans for the Royal Navy's Victorian era armored cruiser famously sunk during WWI.The builders of British warships created a highly detailed set of plans for each ship upon completion. These highly detailed, multicolored drawings represented the exact appearance and specifications of the ship as it entered service. Today, the National Maritime Museum and Seaforth Publishing are making these invaluable resources available to the public through a series of books featuring high-quality digital reproductions.This volume presents the plans for the armored cruiser HMS Cressy. Launched on December 4th, 1899, it best known for the disaster of September 22nd, 1914, in which Cressy and two sister-ships were sunk by a small submarine. 11. Optimized routing of unmanned aerial systems to address informational gaps in counterinsurgency

In COIN, a military commander requires maximum situational awareness not only with regard to the enemy but also to the status of logistical support concerning civil security operations, governance, essential services, economic development, and the host nation's security forces. Although current Brigade level Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) can provide critical unadulterated views of progress with respect to these Logistical Lines of Operation (LLO), the majority of units continue to employ UASs for strictly conventional combat support missions. By incorporating these LLO targets into the mission planning cycle with a collective UAS effort, commanders can gain a decisive advantage in COIN. Based on the type of LLO, some of these targets might require more than a single observation to provide the maximum benefit. This thesis explores an integer programming and metaheuristic approach to solve the Collective UAS Planning Problem (CUPP). The solution to this problem provides optimal plans for multiple sortie routes for heterogeneous UAS assets that collectively visit these diverse secondary LLO targets while in transition to or from primary mission targets. By exploiting the modularity of the Raven UAS asset, we observe clear advantages, with respect to the total number of targets observed and the total mission time, from an exchange of Raven UASs and from collective sharing of targets between adjacent units. Comparing with the status quo of decentralized operations, we show that the results of this new concept demonstrate significant improvements in target coverage. Furthermore, the use of metaheuristics with a Repeated Local Search algorithm facilitates the fast generation of solutions, each within 1.72% of optimality for problems with up to 5 UASs and 25 nodes. Abstract

This report describes the presentation, physical and histological examination, and diagnostic workup and treatment of an 80-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the left popliteal fossa. Although the most common cause of popliteal mass is a Baker cyst, the differential diagnosis is extensive. This article also briefly discusses epidemiological, radiological, macroscopic and genetic aspects of primitive neuroectodermal tumours, and highlights recurrence rates in the published literature.
