The current paper covers an experimental study, mathematical modelling, and design optimization of the laser treatment process of denim fabrics. Laser fading is used in the finishing phase of garment production, unfortunately, it decreases fabric durability. Denim fabric is known as a cotton fabric but nowadays it is blended with other fibres to improve fabric properties. For this reason, the main purpose of this study was to test multicomponent fabric longevity after laser treatment. The knowledge from this study is used by garment production company. The tear force, abrasion resistance, and colour difference are considered as performance characteristics of laser treated denim fabrics subjected to maximization. To achieve the goals, novel, mathematical models were developed. In the preliminary tests, the design space was determined. The full factorial design of experiments was utilized in the experimental study and the values of the performance characteristics are measured. Based on the results of the experimental study the artificial neural network and Haar wavelet based mathematical models were developed to predict the behaviour of the tear force, abrasion resistance, and colour difference. The artificial intelligence-based multicriteria design optimization procedure is developed.

Nanocomposites made via electrospinning were constructed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitin. Chitin was extracted from a natural source (Fomes fomentarius), which allowed for precise control of the chemical properties of the resulting material. Chitin was chosen as a filler due to its low cost and widespread availability. Increasing the degree of acetylation of the chitin increased the Young’s Modulus of the resulting fiber mats but only at relatively high levels. While composites at lower acetylation levels were stable, no increase in the Young’s Modulus was observed, presumably due to decreased intermolecular bonding among fibers. The results suggest that precise control of the degree of acetylation of chitin, more than the loading amount and dispersibility, significantly impacts composite formation.

Laser fading technology is used to give a unique worn look to a fabric. This finishing technique is environmentally friendly compared to conventional methods because it reduces the use of harmful chemicals and large amounts of water. A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser with a wavelength of 10.6 µm was used in this study. In bulk production, fixed manufacturing parameters help to reduce production preparation time. Thus, two combinations of laser power and speed of the laser cutter head (14 W and 230 mm/s; 16 W and 350 mm/s) were used to determine how universal the fixed laser parameters are for fading five different types of multicomponent twill and satin weave denim fabrics, which contain cotton, elastane, polyester and viscose. Physico-mechanical properties (tear, tensile properties and abrasion resistance) were tested to evaluate the effect of the selected laser parameters on fabric strength properties. Microscopical analysis was performed to assess the effect of laser fading on the yarn and fibre morphology of denim fabrics.

The influence of different concentrations of salt-added polyethylene oxide (PEO) on the spinnability of chitosan (CS)/PEO + NaCl blends that could be used as a component part of filters for water treatment or nanofiber membranes as well as for medical applications was investigated in this study. The morphological properties of manufactured nanofibers were analyzed as well. It was determined that an increase of PEO concentration resulted mostly in thin and round nanofibers formed during electrospinning, but the manufacturing process became complex, because many wet fibers reached the collector while spinning. Also, it was noticed that the salt was not dissolved completely in the polymer solutions and some crystals were seen in the SEM images of manufactured fiber mats. However, the addition of salt resulted in lower viscosity and better conductivity of solution and fiber mats as well. The opposite effect was observed as the concentration of PEO was increased. The orientation of produced nanofibers as well as their diameter were analyzed with commercially available software. It was determined that the results obtained by software and microscopically are repeatable. The difference among the results of diameter calculated with software and taken by microscope varied from 0% to approximately 12%. The FTIR analyses indicated that alterations in polymer concentrations or the addition of salt did not induce any discernible changes in the chemical composition or nature of the materials under investigation. The sodium chloride present in the solutions enhanced electrical properties and increased conductivity values more than 50 times for PEO solutions and six times for CS/PEO blend solutions, compared to conductivity values of solutions without salt. To assess the thermal characteristics of the PEO/CS blend nanofibers, measurements using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to determine melting (Tm) and crystallization (Tc) temperatures, as well as specific heat capacities were conducted. These parameters were derived from the analysis of endothermic and exothermic peaks observed in the DSC data. It showed that all produced nanofibers were semicrystalline.

The effect of nanoclay additive on polyamide film oxygen permeability is investigated from the perspective of possible use as a laminate component for low-cost food packaging material. Montmorillonite nanoclay was melt-mixed in an industrial grade polyamide by twin-screw extrusion and the mixture was hot-pressed to a ~50 µm thick film. The film with 10 wt.% of nanoclay loading showed a 17 % decrease in the oxygen transmission rate (OTR), as compared to the pristine polyamide film (72 and 87 cm3/m2∙24 h, respectively). Despite the relatively high loading of the filler the obtained OTR exceeds that of the food packaging preferred upper limit of 10 cm3/m2∙24 h. XRD measurements confirmed the near-complete exfoliation of the nanoclay platelets. The platelets were found to be at an average angle of 9.5 degrees relative to the film’s surface plane. To comply with the requirements for food packaging, this angle needs to be decreased down to 0.4 degrees. To achieve this, different film-making methods enabling better control over the filler particles’ orientation need to be explored. Nanoclay addition increased the films’ yield strength (23 % for 10 wt.% film) and stiffness, while not affecting the films’ optical appearance.

The circular economy is emerging as green technology solution for polymer and composite industries. However, the use of circular economy as an industrial practice is still a global challenge. In this article, polypropylene-cotton hybrid composite was developed using different amounts of cotton fibre waste (0, 10, 30, 40 wt%). Scanning electron microscope (SEM), tribometer, Rockwell hardness tester and binocular microscope were used for investigations of composite surface, hardness and coefficient of friction (COF). The mean coefficient of friction values was 0.64, 0.75, 0.88 and 0.94 for pure propylene, 10, 30 and 40% of cotton reinforced composites, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy characterization of hybrid composite revealed the voids, porosity and asperities due to random fibres orientation. The Rockwell hardness value of composites was increased due to rise of fibre fraction. Based on the COF values, hardness and surface characterization, polypropylene-cotton reinforced hybrid composite could be used functionally for thermal and sound applications.

The transesterification of cellulose with vinyl esters in ionic liquid media is suggested as a prospective environmentally friendly alternative to conventional esterification. In this study, various long-chain cellulose esters (laurate, myristate, palmitate, and stearate) with a degree of substitution (DS) up to 1.8 have been synthesized in novel distillable ionic liquid, [mTBNH][OAC]. This IL has high dissolving power towards cellulose, which can improve homogeneous transesterification. Additionally, [mTBNH][OAC] has durability towards recycling and can be regenerated and re-used again for the next cycles of esterification. DMSO is used as a co-solvent because of its ability to speed up mass transport due to lower solvent viscosity. The optimization of the reaction parameters, such as co-solvent content, temperature (20–80 °C), reaction time (1–5 h), and a molar ratio of reactants (1–5 eq. AGU) is reported. It was found that within studied reaction conditions, DS increases with increasing reaction time, temperature, and added vinyl esters. Structure analysis using FTIR, 1H, and 13C NMR after acylation revealed the introduction of the alkyl chains into cellulose for all studied samples. The results also suggested that the substitution order of the OH group is C7-O6 > C7-O2 > C7-O3. Unique, complex thermal and rheological investigation of the cellulose esters shows the growth of an amorphous phase upon the degree of substitution. At the same time, the homogeneous substitution of cellulose with acyl chains increases the melt viscosity of a material. Internal plasticization in cellulose esters was found to be the mechanism for the melt processing of the material. Long-chain cellulose esters show the potential to replace commonly used externally plasticized cellulose derivatives.

Characteristics and serviceability of denim fabrics have undergone major changes. Nowadays denim is commonly used for casual wear. Durability and comfort are important parameters for consumers when choosing a denim garment. Therefore, in this study, abrasion resistance, tear and tensile properties of core–spun yarns and air permeability of denim fabrics with different weft yarns per centimetre and fibre content were analysed. The test results showed that weft yarns per centimetre influences fabric air permeability negatively but abrasion resistance increases. Higher weft yarns per centimetre influences fabric air permeability negatively but abrasion resistance increases. Polyester, elastane, modal, viscose and Lycra T400 were used in the core of weft yarn to analyse the impact of those fibres on the durability and comfort properties. Elastane is used to add stretchability to the fabric, which provides comfort to the wearer. The higher the elastomeric fibre content in the fabric, the greater is its elasticity; however, the tensile properties of the woven fabric decrease. The tear strength of the fabric was increased by the presence of the polyester fibre in the core.

In this study, propolis additives provide antibacterial and antifungal effects that prolong the product’s shelf life. The aim of the study is to obtain homogeneous fiber membranes of polyvinyl alcohol and propolis by the electrospinning method and to evaluate their suitability for food packaging. Three propolis extracts are used in the study—water, ethyl alcohol, and glycerin-based. The membranes’ morphology and fiber diameter distribution, tensile deformation, air permeability, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and microbiological tests (Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli) were analyzed for electrospun samples. The results of the study show that propolis extracts are incorporated into membranes and the additive provides an antimicrobial effect with the contact surface. The obtained membranes are breathable: gas exchange can be controlled by using a material of appropriate thickness (air permeability coefficient is 0.046 and 0.276 mm/s). The mechanical properties of membranes are affected by moisture, but tensile strength can be improved with thermal post-processing at 100 °C. The propolis-containing fibers’ diameters are from 293 ± 8 to 664 ± 11 nm. Depending on membranes’ demonstrated properties, it can be concluded that the composites have the potential to increase the shelf life of fresh fruits and berries.

The goal of achieving the large-scale production of zero-emission vehicles by 2035 will create high expectations for electric vehicle (EV) development and availability. Currently, a major problem is the lack of suitable batteries and battery materials in large quantities. The rechargeable zinc–air battery (RZAB) is a promising energy-storage technology for EVs due to the environmental friendliness and low production cost. Herein, iron, cobalt, and nickel phthalocyanine tri-doped electrospun carbon nanofibre-based (FeCoNi-CNF) catalyst material is presented as an affordable and promising alternative to Pt-group metal (PGM)-based catalyst. The FeCoNi-CNF-coated glassy carbon electrode showed an oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction reversibility of 0.89 V in 0.1 M KOH solution. In RZAB, the maximum discharge power density (Pmax) of 120 mW cm−2 was obtained with FeCoNi-CNF, which is 86% of the Pmax measured with the PGM-based catalyst. Furthermore, during the RZAB charge–discharge cycling, the FeCoNi-CNF air electrode was found to be superior to the commercial PGM electrocatalyst in terms of operational durability and at least two times higher total life-time.

Thermoplastic cellulose esters are promising materials for bioplastic packaging. For that usage, it is important to understand their mechanical and surface wettability properties. In this study, a series of cellulose esters are prepared, such as laurate, myristate, palmitate, and stearate. The aim of the study is to investigate the tensile and surface wettability properties of the synthesized cellulose fatty acid esters to understand their suitability as a bioplastic packaging material. Cellulose fatty acid esters are first synthesized from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), then dissolved in pyridine solution, and after the solvent cast into thin films. The cellulose fatty acid ester acylation process is characterized by the FTIR method. Cellulose esters hydrophobicity is evaluated with contact angle measurements. The mechanical properties of the films are tested with the tensile test. For all the synthesized films, FTIR provides clear evidence of acylation by showing the presence of characteristic peaks. Films’ mechanical properties are comparable to those of generally used plastics such as LDPE and HDPE. Furthermore, it appears that with an increase in the side-chain length, the water barrier properties showed improvement. These results show that they could potentially be suitable materials for films and packaging materials.

Due to the high prevalence of infectious diseases and their concurrent outbreaks, there is a high interest in developing novel materials with antimicrobial properties. Antibacterial and antiviral properties of a range of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) are a promising means to fight airborne diseases caused by viruses and bacteria. The aim of this study was to test antimicrobial metals and metal-based nanoparticles efficacy against three viruses, namely influenza A virus (H1N1; A/WSN/1933) and coronaviruses TGEV and SARS-CoV-2; and two bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The efficacy of ZnO, CuO, and Ag NPs and their respective metal salts, i.e., ZnSO4, CuSO4, and AgNO3, was evaluated in suspensions, and the compounds with the highest antiviral efficacy were chosen for incorporation into fibers of cellulose acetate (CA), using electrospinning to produce filter materials for face masks. Among the tested compounds, CuSO4 demonstrated the highest efficacy against influenza A virus and SARS-CoV-2 (1 h IC50 1.395 mg/L and 0.45 mg/L, respectively), followed by Zn salt and Ag salt. Therefore, Cu compounds were selected for incorporation into CA fibers to produce antiviral and antibacterial filter materials for face masks. CA fibers comprising CuSO4 decreased SARS-CoV-2 titer by 0.38 logarithms and influenza A virus titer by 1.08 logarithms after 5 min of contact; after 1 h of contact, SARS-COV-2 virus was completely inactivated. Developed CuO- and CuSO4-based filter materials also efficiently inactivated the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The metal NPs and respective metal salts were potent antibacterial and antiviral compounds that were successfully incorporated into the filter materials of face masks. New antibacterial and antiviral materials developed and characterized in this study are crucial in the context of the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and beyond.

Fungi contain a significant amount of chitin in their cell walls presenting an attractive source for this commercially significant material. In this study, chitin was extracted from eight different mushroom species native to Estonia. Significant differences in molar mass, chitin content, and fibre size were observed while the degree of acetylation was mostly similar.

Electrospun polymer nanofiber materials have been studied as basic materials for various applications. Depending on the intended use of the fibers, their morphology can be adjusted by changing the technological parameters, the properties of the spinning solutions, and the combinations of composition. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effect of electrode type, spinning parameters, polymer molecular weight, and solution concentration on membranes morphology. The main priority was to obtain the smallest possible fiber diameters and homogeneous electrospun membranes. As a result, five electrode types were selected, the lowest PVA solution concentration for stable spinning process was detected, spinning parameters for homogenous fibers were obtained, and the morphology of electrospun fiber membranes was analyzed. Viscosity, conductivity, pH, and density were evaluated for PVA polymers with five different molecular weights (30–145 kDa) and three concentration solutions (6, 8, and 10 wt.%). The membrane defects and fiber diameters were compared as a function of molecular weight and electrode type. The minimum concentration of PVA in the solution allowed more additives to be added to the solution, resulting in thinner diameters and a higher concentration of the additive in the membranes. The molecular weight, concentration, and electrode significantly affected the fiber diameters and the overall quality of the membrane.

Novel composite self-disinfecting films of polylactic acid (PLA) filled with nanosized particles of double sodium–copper(II) paratungstate B Na2Cu3(CuOH)2[W12O40(OH)2]·32H2O (POM) were developed. The solvent casting (POM/PLA film) and solvent-free melt extrusion methods (Extr. POM/PLA film) were applied for film preparation. The copper (II) ion release to water from both types of the films after 10 days at different temperatures demonstrated that the PLA matrix acts as a diffusion barrier, and the resulting concentration of released copper in water at room temperature remained low, at 0.79% for POM/PLA film and 0.51% for Extr. POM/PLA film. The POM-containing films reveals a significant inhibitory effect against E. coli ATCC 25922 in the agar diffusion test. The numbers of CFUs in washes of the films after incubation for 24 h were found to be 3.6 log CFU mL–1 (POM/PLA film) and 4.1 log CFU mL–1 (Extr. POM/PLA film). The films combine the antibacterial properties of POM and a bio-based polymer matrix, which makes them a prospective coating material for applications in hospital indoor environments. Excellent thermal stability of POM gives a technological advantage for industrial manufacturing to allow the processing of novel composite material in the solvent free (molten) state.

The aim of this study was to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of aqueous electrolytes on thin-layer (20 µm) nanoporous carbide-derived carbon (CDC) composite fibrous directly electrospun electrodes without further carbonisation. There have been previously investigated fibrous electrodes, which are produced by applying different post-treatment processes, however this makes the production of fibrous electrodes more expensive, complex and time consuming. Furthermore, in the present study high specific capacitance was achieved with directly electrospun nanoporous CDC-based fibrous electrodes in different neutral aqueous electrolytes. The benefit of fibrous electrodes is the advanced mechanical properties compared to the existing commercial electrode technologies based on pressure-rolled or slurry-cast powder mix electrodes. Such improved mechanical properties are preferred in more demanding applications, such as in the space industry. Electrospinning technology also allows for larger electrode production capacities without increased production costs. In addition to the influence of aqueous electrolyte chemical composition, the salt concentration effects and cycle stability with respect to organic electrolytes are investigated. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements on electrospun electrodes showed the highest capacitance for asymmetrical cells with an aqueous 1 M NaNO3-H2O electrolyte. High CV capacitance was correlated with constant current charge–discharge (CC) data, for which a specific capacitance of 191 F g−1 for the positively charged electrode and 311 F g−1 for the negatively charged electrode was achieved. The investigation of electrolyte salt concentration on fibrous electrodes revealed the typical capacitance dependence on ionic conductivity with a peak capacitance at medium concentration levels. The cycle-life measurements of selected two-electrode test cells with aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes revealed good stability of the electrospun electrodes.

This study focuses on the electrochemical behavior of thin-layer fibrous carbide-derived carbon (CDC) electrospun electrodes in commercial and research and development stage organic-solvent and ionic liquid (IL) based electrolytes. The majority of earlier published works stated various electrolytes with asymmetric cells of powder-based pressure-rolled (PTFE), or slurry-cast electrodes, were significantly different from the presented CDC-based fibrous spun electrodes. The benefits of the fibrous structure are relatively low thickness (20 µm), flexibility and mechanical durability. Thin-layered durable electrode materials are gaining more interest and importance in mechanically more demanding applications such as the space industry and in wearable devices, and need to achieve a targeted balance between mechanical, electrical and electrochemical properties. The existing commercial electrode technologies lack compatibility in such applications due to their limited mechanical properties and high cost. The test results showed that the widest potential window dU ≤ 3.5 V was achieved in 1.5 M 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumbis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide (EMIm-TFSI) solution in acetonitrile (ACN). Gravimetric capacitance reached 105.6 F g−1 for the positively charged electrode. Cycle-life results revealed stable material capacitance and resistance over 3000 cycles.

Water-soluble, partially cross-linked poly-2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline combining the properties of chemical and physical gels was synthesized by a two-step procedure. Thermally induced sol-gel transition in its aqueous solution was studied by rheology, light scattering, and turbidimetry. It was demonstrated that the synthesized product is bimodal; it consists of linear and cross-linked components. The cross-linked components are responsible for the gelation, while the linear ones abate the viscosity growth. Heating the solution above the phase transition temperature leads to the self-assembly of the particles into a physical gel. The combination of chemical and physical cross-linking was found to be a prospective route for thermosensitive gel development.

This study examines the effect of different post cure parameters to a polymer matrix particulate reinforced composite material. The goal is to evaluate the importance of different factors and to suggest a well-balanced post cure mode that supports the application of the material.Polymer matrix composites are post cured at elevated temperature to increase the amount of cross linking to achieve better chemical and heat resistance and mechanical properties. Every material has an individual post cure process that depends from the raw materials. Post curing variables include temperature, duration of cure, the time between initial curing and post curing and temperature profile gradient.There are several ways to determine the cure state of a polymer. It can be evaluated based on the mechanical and physical properties, residual styrene content, glass transition temperature, residual exotherm or solvent swelling test. For the determination of the suitable post cure parameters test slabs were casted and post cured with varying time and temperature. Glass transition temperature, residual exotherm, softening in ethanol, surface hardness, flexural strength and flexural modulus were determined. It is shown that the material should be cured at 60 °C – 80 °C. Blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), moderate and hyper-branched LLDPEs (LLDPE and HbPE, respectively) have attained widespread commercial applications, though the understanding of the mechanical and melt-flow properties of such blends has been handicapped by the absence of a consensus concerning the degrees of mixing of the components. Moreover, usually the blends are obtained by melt blending, which may not ensure the initial homogeneity of the components. In our work the mixtures were prepared by dissolving the conventional LLDPE having branching content 7.2 wt% with HbPE with comonomer content 17.8 wt% in xylene at 130 °C and stirring for 2 hours. The same procedure was applied for the blending of HDPE with HbPE. After dissolving the mixtures were cooled in liquid nitrogen and after that freeze dried in vacuum line. The ratio of components in the blends was varied. Differential scanning calorimetry has been used to investigate the miscibility and thermal behavior of the blends. For this purpose isothermal and non-isothermal treatment of prepared blends were conducted. By preliminary study the double melting peaks in non-isothermal endotherms have been observed in all the studied blends. The presence of two peaks in DSC scan can be attributed to the formation of separated crystals from both the high density/linear low density and highly branched components. However, certain limited degree of co-crystallization is detected in all the LLDPE/HbPE blends and HDPE/HbPE blend rich in HbPE component.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.3.589

A bimodal high density polyethylene (HDPE) has been successfully fractionated by analytical size exclusion chromatography into molar mass fractions with Mw's ranging from 3.6 kg/mol to 8 000 kg/mol, and subsequently deposited on germanium disks using the Lab Connections Transform method. After removal of the fractions from the disks, having masses in between 10 µg - 150 µg, differential scanning calorimetry has been successful in measuring the (re)crystallization and melting behavior of these fractions. Comparing the crystallization and melting peak temperatures of the fractions with those of narrow molar mass linear polyethylenes points to the HDPE being linear below and short chain branched above 100 kg/mol respectively. This value coincides roughly with the 'split' between the molar mass distributions resulting from the first and the second polymerization reactor - confirming the addition of 1-butene in the second reactor.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.3.590

In our work we studied composites of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) and low density polyethylene filled with cellulose fibres. The studied composite materials were manufactured with a twin-screw extruder. The extruded compound was processed in to samples using compression moulding. The content of cellulose in polymer/cellulose composites was varied. Effect of low amounts of cellulose on the rheological and tensile properties was studied. Tensile tests showed that the incorporation of cellulose into PLA matrix lead to stiffer but slightly more brittle and weaker materials, since Young's modulus increases and tensile strength and elongation at break slightly decrease. Mechanical results are in agreement with rheological behaviour: the composites exhibit the improvement in the storage and loss moduli of composites compared with that of matrix polymers. The composite dynamic viscosity increases with cellulose content in the same manner as loss and storage moduli. The processing and material properties of PLA/cellulose composites were compared to the more commonly used low-density-polyethylene/cellulose composites.http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ms.17.1.245
