1. Academic Case Reports Lack Diversity: Assessing the Presence and Diversity of Sociodemographic and Behavioral Factors related to Post COVID-19 Condition

Abstract

Understanding the prevalence, disparities, and symptom variations of Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC) for vulnerable populations is crucial to improving care and addressing intersecting inequities. This study aims to develop a comprehensive framework for integrating social determinants of health (SDOH) into PCC research by leveraging NLP techniques to analyze disparities and variations in SDOH representation within PCC case reports. Following construction of a PCC Case Report Corpus, comprising over 7,000 case reports from the LitCOVID repository, a subset of 709 reports were annotated with 26 core SDOH-related entity types using pre-trained named entity recognition (NER) models, human review, and data augmentation to improve quality, diversity and representation of entity types. An NLP pipeline integrating NER, natural language inference (NLI), trigram and frequency analyses was developed to extract and analyze these entities. Both encoder-only transformer models and RNN-based models were assessed for the NER objective. Fine-tuned encoder-only BERT models outperformed traditional RNN-based models in generalizability to distinct sentence structures and greater class sparsity. Exploratory analysis revealed variability in entity richness, with prevalent entities like condition, age, and access to care, and underrepresentation of sensitive categories like race and housing status. Trigram analysis highlighted frequent co-occurrences among entities, including age, gender, and condition. The NLI objective (entailment and contradiction analysis) showed attributes like "Experienced violence or abuse" and "Has medical insurance" had high entailment rates (82.4%-80.3%), while attributes such as "Is female-identifying," "Is married," and "Has a terminal condition" exhibited high contradiction rates (70.8%-98.5%).

Abstract

Este estudio determino el impacto de un programa de entrenamiento destinado a mejorar la potencia mediante la sentadilla profunda y la media sentadilla. Participaron nueve atletas registrados en la Liga Vallecaucana de Ciclismo. Se realizaron mediciones de tiempo en una distancia de 60 metros con salida detenida en bicicleta, así como el salto contra movimiento (CMJ) y la repetición máxima (RM) antes y después de un periodo de entrenamiento de 4 semanas. Los participantes se distribuyeron en tres grupos: el grupo 1 realizó la media sentadilla, el grupo 2 llevó a cabo la sentadilla profunda, y el grupo 3 se sometió a ambos ejercicios. Se observaron cambios significativos en los valores de tiempo en los 60 metros para el grupo 2, que mejoró (de 9.35 s ± 1.18 s a 9.19 s ± 1.19 s), en contraste con los otros dos grupos que no experimentaron mejoras significativas. El grupo 2 también mostró mejoras en los valores de CMJ (de 37.24 cm ± 6.22 cm a 40.75 cm ± 5.12 cm), al igual que el grupo 3 (de 33.17 cm ± 3.12 cm a 35.07 cm ± 5.56 cm). En cambio, el grupo 1 no presentó mejorías en estos resultados. En cuanto a la RM, todos los grupos superaron sus marcas iniciales. En resumen, el ejercicio de sentadilla profunda demostró ser más efectivo para mejorar el rendimiento en todas las pruebas, incluso con un periodo de entrenamiento breve, independientemente del ángulo de ejecución del ejercicio.

5. The economic effects of perceptions of the Russia-Ukraine war in Ecuador [version 2; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

Background Using an online questionnaire capturing the immediate economic and social effects of the Russia-Ukraine war. The study assesses the topics of more profound concern for university students and the variation of economic attitudes related to their socio-demographic variables. Methods Three hundred eighty-five participants, between 18 and 22 years of age, 49% female, leads us to identify significant differences by sex and economic status related to the stock crash, inflation, corruption, and poverty perceptions. However, the effect size and sampling could be improved. Results Kruskal-Wallis test confirms that the below-average economic status group feels more worried about higher inflation, while females tend to be more concerned about inflation, corruption, and poverty because of the conflict. Ordered logistic regression reveals that participants who express higher levels of concern regarding the impact of increased energy prices and poverty tend to exhibit greater overall worry. Conclusions Even though convenience sampling imposes constraints to extrapolate the results broadly, the research constitutes a benchmark for similar studies among Latin American and Caribbean countries since economic expectations and economic knowledge from citizens, applied in their decisions, play an essential role in national development.

Abstract

In contemporary times, regulations have been established to govern access and integration of electric vehicles, which hold immense potential in mitigating the adverse impacts of transportation arising from escalating mobility demands and rapid urbanization. Nevertheless, their implementation poses intricate challenges due to the multifaceted nature of sustainability and other complexities, as they are considered a prospective solution to address the pressing issue of climate change and achieve holistic sustainability. Moreover, this study elucidates the methodological approach employed for selecting a comprehensive set of criteria to be considered in energy planning initiatives involving the incorporation of electric vehicles, encompassing both renewable and conventional energy sources. The selection process was informed through a thorough review of existing literature and the insightful input from experts, utilizing the Likert scale and arithmetic mean as reference benchmarks. The outcomes of this research have yielded the identification of 27 sub-criteria, categorized into five distinct groups: technical, economic, social, environmental, and risk-related factors, thereby enabling a comprehensive evaluation of energy planning projects associated with the adoption of electric vehicles. The findings derived from employing the hierarchical analytical process with fuzzy logic FAHP highlight the considerable potential of most criteria and sub-criteria in devising effective measures. Notably, criteria related to policy-governance and environmental aspects emerged as the most influential, according to the collective expertise of the consulted group. This study significantly contributes to enhancing sustainable mobility and advancing progress towards attaining sustainable development goals. By delineating pertinent criteria and sub-criteria for the planning process, this research augments the literature dedicated to supporting informed decision-making in sustainable transportation, particularly through the potential application of a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) method.

La organización Tuercas, Tornillos y Repuestos Ltda. es una empresa dedicada, principalmente, a la comercialización de repuestos automotrices para vehículos de carga pesada. Esta empresa carece de un sistema de gestión de calidad para planear, ejecutar y controlar sus procesos internos. Por esa razón, se propone planificar el sistema de gestión de calidad basado en la Norma NTC-ISO 9001 del 2015, para la mejora continua de sus procesos. La metodología parte de un análisis situacional según los requerimientos de la Norma; luego, se desarrollan tres etapas (diagnóstico de la organización, identificación riesgos y caracterización de los procesos de la organización, y seguimiento y evaluación del sistema de gestión de calidad) conforme al ciclo PHVA, en búsqueda de la mejora continua.

Abstract

Desde tiempos muy remotos, las plantas y los aceites esenciales extraídos de ellas han cumplido un papel muy importante en el área terapéutica gracias a sus propiedades biológicas, como la acción larvicida, analgésica, antinflamatoria, antioxidante, fungicida entre otras. Se ha comprobado que los aceites esenciales exhiben actividad biológica, lo cual es extremadamente importante en el campo de la ciencia y la industria. Por esta razón en las últimas décadas ha ido tomando mayor importancia el estudio y desarrollo de técnicas analíticas que permitan la determinación e identificación de la composición química de los aceites esenciales ya que son una alternativa potencial a los compuestos sintéticos, debido a la resistencia que éstos han desarrollado frente a microorganismos patógenos. En este artículo se hace un análisis de la composición química de los aceites esenciales de algunas especies que pertenecen a las familias: Lamiaceas, Asteraceas y Vervenaceas y la relación con su actividad biológica. Se concluye que la actividad antimicrobiana de los aceites esenciales depende de su composición química y de la cantidad de los componentes individuales.

En términos metodológicos la investigación muestra la aplicación de la observación netnográfica, la encuesta y los grupos de discusión virtuales.

Abstract

Caterpillars are the developmental stage of the flying insect called butterfly. The moths are the beautiful creature of earth which comes under the class of insects. They are recognized by their beautiful and colorful forewings body and legs. Caterpillars are the larval stage of the moth which are found in the leaf and stem of the plants when the moth laid eggs on the leaves after their mating. Caterpillar after fully developed from its eggs draw out a flimsy, soft cocoon made up of dark coarse silk on leaves and stem for their shelter. Caterpillar is also a beautiful creature that is found with different colors and strips with spines and urticating hair in their body for releasing venom for self-defense from external predators. The present study works on the detection and classification of the caterpillar using image processing with a k-NN classifier.This research help in characterizing the type of caterpillar image classification for particular three classes such as accuracy of Buck Moth Caterpillar, the accuracy of Saddleback Caterpillar, and the accuracy of Io moth Caterpillar. The following stages have been considered are preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification methods using K- Nearest Neighbor classifier. The present investigation results that SYMLET5 analysis works well in the classification of the caterpillar with an accuracy of 96% using K- Nearest Neighbor classifier compare with other measures during investigation and analysis.

Abstract

The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. 24. Performance modeling of neighbor discovery in proactive routing protocols

Abstract

It is well known that neighbor discovery is a critical component of proactive routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks. However there is no formal study on the performance of proposed neighbor discovery mechanisms. This paper provides a detailed model of key performance metrics of neighbor discovery algorithms, such as node degree and the distribution of the distance to symmetric neighbors. The model accounts for the dynamics of neighbor discovery as well as node density, mobility, radio and interference. The paper demonstrates a method for applying these models to the evaluation of global network metrics. In particular, it describes a model of network connectivity. Validation of the models shows that the degree estimate agrees, within 5% error, with simulations for the considered scenarios. The work presented in this paper serves as a basis for the performance evaluation of remaining performance metrics of routing protocols, vital for large scale deployment of ad hoc networks.

Abstract

El Diclofenaco se ha convertido en un medicamento muy consumido por los pacientes debido a su acción farmacológica antiinflamatoria, que disminuye el efecto de las prostaglandinas, causantes de la inflamación y dolor. Por su disposición final inadecuada, ocasiona alrededor del mundo problemas a nivel ecológico, específicamente en la fauna. Siendo parte del grupo de contaminantes emergentes, que no están regulados, a pesar del efecto tóxico capaz de alterar la biósfera, por ejemplo, extinción de buitres asiáticos, 100% mortalidad de embriones pez cebra a concentraciones (100mg/L) con 70% de similitud al genoma humano. Esta investigación planteó la determinación de diclofenaco sódico en soluciones acuosas mediante técnica electroanalítica de escaneo lineal (LSV). Se utilizó un electrodo serigrafiado de carbón vítreo modificado con nanotubo de carbono (WMCNT/SGCE) que contiene un sistema integrado de electrodos auxiliar (electrodo de platino) y de referencia (electrodo de plata- cloruro de plata Ag/AgCl). El estudio de pH abarcó un abanico de potencial desde 0.25 V hasta 0.95 V, obteniéndose un mejor desarrollo electroquímico en medios ácidos. Se construyeron curvas de calibrado a partir de comprimidos comerciales y un patrón de DCF (USP). La linealidad, exactitud, precisión del método fueron significativas.

Abstract

Continued improvements on existing reconstruction methods are vital to the success of high-energy physics experiments, such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In IceCube, further challenges arise as the detector is situated at the geographic South Pole where computational resources are limited. However, to perform real-time analyses and to issue alerts to telescopes around the world, powerful and fast reconstruction methods are desired. Deep neural networks can be extremely powerful, and their usage is computationally inexpensive once the networks are trained. These characteristics make a deep learning-based approach an excellent candidate for the application in IceCube. A reconstruction method based on convolutional architectures and hexagonally shaped kernels is presented. The presented method is robust towards systematic uncertainties in the simulation and has been tested on experimental data. In comparison to standard reconstruction methods in IceCube, it can improve upon the reconstruction accuracy, while reducing the time necessary to run the reconstruction by two to three orders of magnitude., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Journal of Instrumentation; added references

Abstract

Introduction: The introduction of foreign bodies into the rectum is a frequent practice considered as proctological emergency. Objective: We report our experience in trauma by a foreign body in the rectum during over 20 years in the Thoraco-abdominal Trauma Surgery Service of Civil Hospital Fray Antonio Alcalde of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Materials and Methods : Retrospective cross-sectional study (1999-2018) carried out with data recorded in the hospital’s archives., patients of both sex with a age rank of 15 to 91 years were included. Results: There were a total of 194 patients, including 169 males and 25 females, with a predominant age range from 30-44 years with 75 cases (38%). The incidence was between 1999 and 2010 of 4.0 ± 2.1 patients per year, against 15.4 ± 8.8 cases between 2011-2018. Proctorrhage was the predominant sign (56 patients), followed by foreign-body sensation (49 patients) and abdominal pain (41 patients). Diagnosis was based mainly on digital rectal examination (100%) and plain abdominal x-ray (94%). Manual extraction was performed in 82 % of the cases, laparotomy 10 cases (5%) and colonoscopy in 5 cases (2.5%). The main complication was mucosal tear in 50 cases (57%), skin and mucosa tear in 12 cases (14%), and perforation in 8 cases (9%). Conclusions: The frequency of foreign bodies into the rectum is increasing and constitutes a real challenge for the surgeon due to the enormous diversity of variables. Abstract

Desde tiempos muy remotos, las plantas y los aceites esenciales extraídos de ellas han cumplido un papel muy importante en el área terapéutica gracias a sus propiedades biológicas, como la acción larvicida, analgésica, antinflamatoria, antioxidante, fungicida entre otras. Se ha comprobado que los aceites esenciales exhiben actividad biológica, lo cual es extremadamente importante en el campo de la ciencia y la industria. Por esta razón en las últimas décadas ha ido tomando mayor importancia el estudio y desarrollo de técnicas analíticas que permitan la determinación e identificación de la composición química de los aceites esenciales ya que son una alternativa potencial a los compuestos sintéticos, debido a la resistencia que éstos han desarrollado frente a microorganismos patógenos. En este artículo se hace un análisis de la composición química de los aceites esenciales de algunas especies que pertenecen a las familias: Lamiaceas, Asteraceas y Vervenaceas y la relación con su actividad Biológica. Se concluye que la actividad antimicrobiana de los aceites esenciales depende de su composición química y de la cantidad de los componentes individuales.

Abstract

Alterations of serine/threonine phosphorylation of the cardiac proteome are a hallmark of heart failure. However, the contribution of tyrosine phosphorylation (pTyr) to the pathogenesis of cardiac hypertrophy remains unclear. We use global mapping to discover and quantify site-specific pTyr in two cardiac hypertrophic mouse models, i.e., cardiac overexpression of ErbB2 (TgErbB2) and α myosin heavy chain R403Q (R403Q-αMyHC Tg), compared to control hearts. From this, there are significant phosphoproteomic alterations in TgErbB2 mice in right ventricular cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) pathways. On the other hand, R403Q-αMyHC Tg mice indicated that the EGFR1 pathway is central for cardiac hypertrophy, along with angiopoietin, ErbB, growth hormone, and chemokine signaling pathways activation. Surprisingly, most myofilament proteins have downregulation of pTyr rather than upregulation. Kinase-substrate enrichment analysis (KSEA) shows a marked downregulation of MAPK pathway activity downstream of k-Ras in TgErbB2 mice and activation of EGFR, focal adhesion, PDGFR, and actin cytoskeleton pathways. In vivo ErbB2 inhibition by AG-825 decreases cardiomyocyte disarray. Serine/threonine and tyrosine phosphoproteome confirm the above-described pathways and the effectiveness of AG-825 Treatment. Thus, altered pTyr may play a regulatory role in cardiac hypertrophic models.

Abstract

Physical review letters 125(14), 141801 (1-11) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.125.141801, The results of a 3+1 sterile neutrino search using eight years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory are presented. A total of 305 735 muon neutrino events are analyzed in reconstructed energy-zenith space to test for signatures of a matter-enhanced oscillation that would occur given a sterile neutrino state with a mass-squared differences between 0.01 and 100 eV$^2$. The best-fit point is found to be at sin$^2$($2θ_{24}$)=0.10 and $Δm_{41}^2$=4.5 eV$^2$, which is consistent with the no sterile neutrino hypothesis with a $p$ value of 8.0%., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract

The observation of electromagnetic radiation from radio to $\gamma$-ray wavelengths has provided a wealth of information about the universe. However, at PeV (10$^{15}$ eV) energies and above, most of the universe is impenetrable to photons. New messengers, namely cosmic neutrinos, are needed to explore the most extreme environments of the universe where black holes, neutron stars, and stellar explosions transform gravitational energy into non-thermal cosmic rays. The discovery of cosmic neutrinos with IceCube has opened this new window on the universe. In this white paper, we present an overview of a next-generation instrument, IceCube-Gen2, which will sharpen our understanding of the processes and environments that govern the universe at the highest energies. IceCube-Gen2 is designed to: 1) Resolve the high-energy neutrino sky from TeV to EeV energies; 2) Investigate cosmic particle acceleration through multi-messenger observations; 3) Reveal the sources and propagation of the highest energy particles in the universe; 4) Probe fundamental physics with high-energy neutrinos. IceCube-Gen2 will increase the annual rate of observed cosmic neutrinos by a factor of ten compared to IceCube, and will be able to detect sources five times fainter than its predecessor. Furthermore, through the addition of a radio array, IceCube-Gen2 will extend the energy range by several orders of magnitude compared to IceCube. Construction will take 8 years and cost about \$350M. The goal is to have IceCube-Gen2 fully operational by 2033. IceCube-Gen2 will play an essential role in shaping the new era of multi-messenger astronomy, fundamentally advancing our knowledge of the high-energy universe. This challenging mission can be fully addressed only in concert with the new survey instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum and gravitational wave detectors which will be available in the coming years., Comment: 56 pages, 29 figures

Abstract

Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are the main gamma-ray emitters in the Galactic plane. They are diffuse nebulae that emit nonthermal radiation. Pulsar winds, relativistic magnetized outflows from the central star, shocked in the ambient medium produce a multiwavelength emission from the radio through gamma-rays. Although the leptonic scenario is able to explain most PWNe emission, a hadronic contribution cannot be excluded. A possible hadronic contribution to the high-energy gamma-ray emission inevitably leads to the production of neutrinos. Using 9.5 yr of all-sky IceCube data, we report results from a stacking analysis to search for neutrino emission from 35 PWNe that are high-energy gamma-ray emitters. In the absence of any significant correlation, we set upper limits on the total neutrino emission from those PWNe and constraints on hadronic spectral components., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Caterpillars are the developmental stage of the flying insect called butterfly. The moths are the beautiful creature of earth which comes under the class of insects. They are recognized by their beautiful and colorful forewings body and legs. Caterpillars are the larval stage of the moth which are found in the leaf and stem of the plants when the moth laid eggs on the leaves after their mating. Caterpillar after fully developed from its eggs draw out a flimsy, soft cocoon made up of dark coarse silk on leaves and stem for their shelter. Caterpillar is also a beautiful creature that is found with different colors and strips with spines and urticating hair in their body for releasing venom for self-defense from external predators. The present study works on the detection and classification of the caterpillar using image processing with a k-NN classifier.This research help in characterizing the type of caterpillar image classification for particular three classes such as accuracy of Buck Moth Caterpillar, the accuracy of Saddleback Caterpillar, and the accuracy of Io moth Caterpillar. The following stages have been considered are preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification methods using K- Nearest Neighbor classifier. The present investigation results that SYMLET5 analysis works well in the classification of the caterpillar with an accuracy of 96% using K- Nearest Neighbor classifier compare with other measures during investigation and analysis.

Abstract

This essay examines the development of Mexican anthropology from a perspective that defines it as 'Anthropology from the South.' It centers its analysis on a theoretical approach that emerged during the last twenty years, that of cosmovision. That approach resulted in significant interpretations of the Mesoamerican cultural tradition. The essay also raises questions about the proceso civilizatorio that considers the entire Mexican nation and that goes beyond the 'Mexico profundo' characterized by Guillermo Bonfil. En este ensayo se plantea el desarrollo de la antropologia mexicana desde la perspectiva que la define como una 'Antropologia del Sur' y centra su deseripcion en un campo teorico que emerge en el lapso comprendido de los ultimos veinte anos, el de la cosmovision, a partir de cuya discusion se hacen contribuciones significativas para la comprension de la tradicion cultural mesoamericana y se abren preguntas sobre el proceso civilizatorio que abarca al conjunto de la nacion mexicana, mas alla de lo que Guillermo Bonfil caracterizo como el 'Mexico profundo'.

Abstract

We present a high-energy neutrino event generator, called LeptonInjector, alongside an event weighter, called LeptonWeighter. Both are designed for large-volume Cherenkov neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. The neutrino event generator allows for quick and flexible simulation of neutrino events within and around the detector volume, and implements the leading Standard Model neutrino interaction processes relevant for neutrino observatories: neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and neutrino-electron annihilation. In this paper, we discuss the event generation algorithm, the weighting algorithm, and the main functions of the publicly available code, with examples., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

High-energy neutrinos are unique messengers of the high-energy universe, tracing the processes of cosmic ray acceleration. This paper presents analyses focusing on time-dependent neutrino point-source searches. A scan of the whole sky, making no prior assumption about source candidates, is performed, looking for a space and time clustering of high-energy neutrinos in data collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory between 2012 and 2017. No statistically significant evidence for a time-dependent neutrino signal is found with this search during this period, as all results are consistent with the background expectation. Within this study period, the blazar 3C 279, showed strong variability, inducing a very prominent gamma-ray flare observed in 2015 June. This event motivated a dedicated study of the blazar, which consists of searching for a time-dependent neutrino signal correlated with the gamma-ray emission. No evidence for a time-dependent signal is found. Hence, an upper limit on the neutrino fluence is derived, allowing us to constrain a hadronic emission model.

Abstract

Many Galactic sources of gamma rays, such as supernova remnants, are expected to produce neutrinos with a typical energy cutoff well below 100 TeV. For the IceCube Neutrino Observatory located at the South Pole, the southern sky, containing the inner part of the Galactic plane and the Galactic Center, is a particularly challenging region at these energies, because of the large background of atmospheric muons. In this paper, we present recent advancements in data selection strategies for track-like muon neutrino events with energies below 100 TeV from the southern sky. The strategies utilize the outer detector regions as veto and features of the signal pattern to reduce the background of atmospheric muons to a level which, for the first time, allows IceCube searching for point-like sources of neutrinos in the southern sky at energies between 100 GeV and several TeV in the muon neutrino charged current channel. No significant clustering of neutrinos above background expectation was observed in four years of data recorded with the completed IceCube detector. Upper limits on the neutrino flux for a number of spectral hypotheses are reported for a list of astrophysical objects in the southern hemisphere., 19 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Physical review letters 124(5), 051103 (1-9) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.124.051103, This paper presents the results from point-like neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a point-like source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above $\sim1\,$TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the Northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of $2.9\,\sigma$ after accounting for statistical trials. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the Northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3$\,\sigma$ significance. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the ten years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract

This article details a novel technique in the treatment of a symptomatic thoracoabdominal aneurysm (TAA) involving the visceral segment and an infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. The patient was treated in a 2-staged hybrid approach combining an endovascular repair of the infrarenal segment, followed by open TAA repair. The large visceral arteries were revascularized using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene GORE Hybrid Vascular Graft (GHVG) and a Gradual Funneling Technique with Dacron graft. This method assured a complete hemostatic seal and minimized visceral ischemic time. To our knowledge, this is the first case of sutureless visceral artery revascularization using GHVG reported in the literature.

Abstract

Fluorescence spectrometers are expensive instruments and fluorimetry is rarely used in undergraduate teaching curricula, especially in the first year. The experiment described utilizes handheld spectrometers capable of measuring absorbance and fluorescence to introduce students to drug binding to DNA. Students monitor the changes that occur in fluorescence intensity when proflavine binds to DNA in the presence and absence of sodium ions. The goals of this experiment are to illustrate principles of electronic structure, noncovalent interactions, and spectroscopic techniques. The handheld device utilized in this experiment is inexpensive and the ease of operation makes fluorescence spectroscopy accessible and exciting to first-year undergraduates.

Abstract

Aortic pseudoaneurysm is a rare, life-threatening complication after cardiac or aortic root surgery. When a pseudoaneurysm has eroded bony structures in the chest, the surgeon's challenge is to choose the safest approach for sternotomy. Herein, we report the case of a 74-year-old woman who presented with a giant pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta, 8 years after undergoing aortic valve replacement. The 8.9 × 5.8-cm formation arose in the anterior aortic sinus, extended to the retrosternal region, exerted mass effect on the main pulmonary artery, and eroded the bony structures of the sternum and medial upper chest. A new aortic valved tissue conduit was placed, and the coronary arteries were reimplanted. The patient recovered without neurologic sequelae. We discuss the characteristics of this case and explain our surgical decisions.

In particular, Neighborhood RED (NRED) has been proposed as an extension to the Random Early Detection (RED) mechanism with the goal of ensuring fair bandwidth allocation across flows in the networks. NRED provides improvements but suffers from limitations that can make its broad implementation difficult. This paper describes two fundamental principles governing neighborhood congestion among TCP flows in ad hoc wireless networks which are exploited to develop an improved control mechanism. The first principle indicates that the likelihood of the channel being captured by a node grows exponentially with the disparity between the node's channel utilization and the expected utilization level. The second principle indicates that traditional random packet marking in NRED leads to reduced fairness across flows, pointing to a simple dropping/marking strategy based on the concept of error diffusion where packet marks are spread apart as homogeneously as possible. The power of these fundamental principles is demonstrated in a Congestion Control scheme referred to as Neighborhood Diffusion Early Marking (NDEM) which results in a more efficient bandwidth distribution compared to NRED.
