This chapter describes the appropriate methodology and method for the research in this book and provides the justification for such a choice. The first section begins with an overview of established research methods in the studies of trust, cooperation, reward, locus of control, and psychological contract in the disciplines of psychology, organizational behavior, and human resources management. Existing literature is reviewed to determine various commonly used qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research methods. The next section rationalizes the research design to answer the research questions and elaborates the procedure of the research.

This technical chapter provides empirical evidence for the first laboratory scenario-based experiment (Study 1) that addresses how individual differences in personality interact with excessive extrinsic rewards, leading to employee cooperation. As such, this chapter sets out to (i) dispel the conflict on the efficacy of excessive extrinsic rewards, (ii) decompose individual differences among employees in their interaction with excessive extrinsic rewards, and (iii) examine the theoretical basis of cooperation. Furthermore, we examine the moderating effects of locus of control and general trust that underscore employee expectations in the relationship between excessive extrinsic reward and cooperation.

A context-specific trust such as organizational trust could underlie employee intention to cooperate more, regardless of individual differences in personality. This chapter sets out to investigate how employers could develop trust to augment employee cooperation via the provision of excessive extrinsic rewards. A two-stage laboratory scenario-based experiment (Study 2) is performed to explore whether employees who receive excessive extrinsic rewards will trust their organization more and as a result will be more willing to cooperate.

Healthcare service is experiencing a paradigm shift due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has caused unprecedented fatalities and taken a toll on medical resources globally. Researchers and healthcare professionals value how data accessibility and analytics can save lives. Developing countries are fast leveraging on the electronic medical record (EMR) system to enhance decision-making effectiveness and patient care. However, for many healthcare professionals, there remain unexplored possibilities of how the use of this ‘normally’ operational-centric EMR might change post-pandemic. We investigate the antecedents (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, habit) of the intention to use EMR, and its impact on dynamic capabilities and physician productivity pre- and post-pandemic, focusing on physicians who are at the frontline of Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Malaysia. This study evidences two significant findings: (1) before the pandemic in the ‘normal’ condition of EMR use, technology perception has significant indirect impact on physician productivity via the key role of dynamic capabilities. However, (2) after the pandemic in the ‘abnormal’ condition, technology perception no longer has any significant impact on physician productivity though their intention to use EMR may have a very weak direct impact on their productivity. A key significant change in the new norm post-pandemic is that dynamic capabilities no longer mediate but strongly and directly impact physician productivity. This direct positive effect is much stronger than before the pandemic. Theoretically, the study is among the first few to integrate perspectives from information systems and dynamic capabilities to examine the impact of EMR use on physician dynamic capabilities for knowledge acquisition and deployment towards enhancing their productivity. The study also offers insights into how a pandemic could accelerate technology perception and contributes to the dynamic use of technology to aid physicians.

We live and work in exciting times. The future workplace is bound to change rapidly with the fundamental transformation in the philosophy of work, i.e., the way work is viewed. The traditional view of life-long employment, central authority, and a fixed work schedule has been replaced by short-term contracts, decentralized management, and a flexible working schedule. Employees’ work views also change with the increasing diversity of the workforce, owing to higher mobility and globalization. This chapter explores three factors—cross-cultural differences, organizational diversity and inclusion, and individual self-reinforcing dynamics—that influence work views to improve cooperation and trust within the organization.

Excessive rewards are viewed as a means of eliciting the maximum potential trust and cooperation from employees by stimulating their motivation. By taking the management perspective, this chapter addresses the scant but conflicting behavioral studies of psychologists and economists and the existing presumptions in psychological contract theory about the provision of excessive extrinsic rewards to employees. To help readers contextualize the key concepts used throughout the chapter, we define the following terms: Trust in the context of business and organization, is defined as trusting behavior (Korsgaard et al., 2015) with the expectation of cooperation. Employee cooperation is defined as a cooperative behavior in terms of work outcomes or affective decisions, with employees being motivated and obligated to perform (Shore & Barksdale, 1998), committed to the organization (Gambetta, 1988) and willing to reciprocate (Falk & Fischbacher, 2006). Finally, excessive extrinsic rewards are defined as monetary rewards provided by the employer and perceived by the employee to exceed their own expectations or to exceed the employer’s initial promise.

This chapter explores how the decomposition of individual differences in personality provides theoretical and practical implications for employers. The key issues and findings of the causal relationship between excessive extrinsic rewards and cooperation are further examined.

This chapter reviews the psychological contract literature, covering three main aspects. The first section introduces the psychological contract theory. The theory introduction is followed by a discussion on the effects of reward on cooperation, trust, and the psychological contract. The chapter follows a contemporary view of psychological contract research, first by narrating the growth of interest in the psychological contract, followed by an understanding of its concept and theory. The violation and fulfillment of the psychological contract are observed in the context of job outcomes such as performance, motivation, commitment, and satisfaction, from employee perspectives. Finally, the chapter discusses the salience of promise to rewards in the psychological contract. The effects are evaluated in relation to the moderating effects of locus of control as a personality trait.

Successful regional cooperation observed in many parts of the world has spurred global travel and tourism. The Southeast Asian region lies at the heart of this global integration with the ASEAN establishment. In 2017, ASEAN will celebrate its 50th golden year anniversary by launching the Visit ASEAN year. Surprisingly, to date not much progress is seen in promoting ASEAN as a single-destination area. The aim of this article is to assess the progress undertaken by the ASEAN establishment in terms of tourism development and evaluate the possible challenges of such intra-regional cooperation.

The year 2017 will be a crucial year for the tourism industry in Central Asia. The region is poised to benefit from a common regional tourism development program fostered by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Greater regional integration and closer interaction in three important areas (political, economic and social cooperation) are expected to be the catalyst for tourism development. The aim of this paper is to assess the progress undertaken by the SCO thus far, and to evaluate how the convergence of these three areas of cooperation would contribute to greater opportunities as well as challenges for tourism in Central Asia.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) embrace of regional economic integration is aimed at a more cohesive and integrated economy by 2025. To this end, ASEAN seeks to enhance trade and ascend the global value chain, facilitated by highly performing logistics. According to World Bank, the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) for Southeast Asia region ranks behind their major trading partners (e.g. China, Japan, Korea, the European Union and the United States of America). This study thus examines and compares ASEAN’s logistics performance with that of these partners. Using random effects model, the aim is to determine the significance of each of the six dimensions of the LPI to the bilateral trade value. Findings show that the efficiency of customs and quality of infrastructure are significant for ASEAN. Based on the comparative study, the findings enable policy-makers to identify the dimensions for improvement towards logistics performance.

In recent years, blockchain technology has garnered phenomenal interest across various industries due to its disruptive potential on business improvement. The capability of blockchain technology in enhancing efficient data management and providing traceability offers significant value to manufacturing. Given the increasing traction of blockchain application, the confluence of blockchain technology with other emergent technologies is poised to transform the manufacturing industry. This study addresses the paucity of scholarly research by deciphering how blockchain technology can contribute to manufacturing improvement. Based on neural network analysis, this study maps the future pathways in blockchain technology research in manufacturing improvement by revealing the emerging themes, offer recommendations, and raise the call for more studies.
