We single out a class of states possessing only threetangle but distributed all over four qubits. This is a three-site analogue of states from the $W$-class, which only possess globally distributed pairwise entanglement as measured by the concurrence. We perform an analysis for four qubits, showing that such a state indeed exists. To this end we analyze specific states of four qubits that are not convexly balanced as for $SL$ invariant families of entanglement, but only affinely balanced. For these states all possible $SL$-invariants vanish, hence they are part of the $SL$ null-cone. Instead, they will possess at least a certain unitary invariant. As an interesting byproduct it is demonstrated that the exact convex roof is reached in the rank-two case of a homogeneous polynomial $SL$-invariant measure of entanglement of degree $2m$, if there is a state which corresponds to a maximally $m$-fold degenerate solution in the zero-polytope that can be combined with the convexified minimal characteristic curve to give a decomposition of $\rho$. If more than one such state does exist in the zero polytope, a minimization must be performed. We analyze the entanglement measure ${C}_{4}$ for specific mixed states in general and for the ground state of the transverse $XY$ spin-1/2 chain. We find that its factorizing property for pure states does not easily extend to mixed states. For cases where the density matrix is a tensor product, ${C}_{4}$ is definitely upper bounded by the product of the corresponding concurrences. In transverse $XY$ chains, we find that for large distances this condition goes conform with the working hypotheses of a factorizing property of density matrices in this limit. Additionally, we find that ${C}_{4}$ together with the genuine multipartite negativity makes it impossible to decide---at the present state of knowledge---which type of entanglement prevails in the system. In particular, this is true for all entanglement measures that detect SL-invariant genuine $n$-partite entanglement for different $n$. Further measures of SL-invariant genuine multipartite entanglement have to be considered here. ${C}_{4}$ is, however, of the same order of magnitude as the genuine multipartite negativity in Phys. Rev. B 89, 134101 (2014) and shows the same functional behavior, which we read as a hint towards the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) type of entanglement. Furthermore, we observe an interesting feature in the ${C}_{4}$ values that resembles a destructive interference with the underlying concurrence.

Here I present a method for how intersections of a certain density matrix of rank 2 with the zero polytope can be calculated exactly. This is a purely geometrical procedure which thereby is applicable to obtaining the zeros of SL- and SU-invariant entanglement measures of arbitrary polynomial degree. I explain this method in detail for a recently unsolved problem. In particular, I show how a three-dimensional view, namely, in terms of the Bloch-sphere analogy, solves this problem immediately. To this end, I determine the zero polytope of the three-tangle, which is an exact result up to computer accuracy, and calculate upper bounds to its convex roof which are below the linearized upper bound. The zeros of the three-tangle (in this case) induced by the zero polytope (zero simplex) are exact values. I apply this procedure to a superposition of the four-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and $W$ state. It can, however, be applied to every case one has under consideration, including an arbitrary polynomial convex-roof measure of entanglement and for arbitrary local dimension.

I calculate the mixed threetangle $\tau_3[\rho]$ for the reduced density matrices of the four-qubit representant states found in Phys. Rev. A {\bf 65}, 052112 (2002). In most of the cases, the convex roof is obtained, except for one class, where I provide with a new upper bound, which is assumed to be very close to the convex roof. I compare with results published in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 113}, 110501 (2014). Since the method applied there usually results in higher values for the upper bound, in certain cases it can be understood that the convex roof is obtained exactly, namely when the zero-polytope where $\tau_3$ vanishes shrinks to a single point.

We investigate possible generalizations of the Coffman-Kundu-Wootters monogamy inequality to four qubits, accounting for multipartite entanglement in addition to the bipartite terms. We show that the most natural extension of the inequality does not hold in general, and we describe the violations of this inequality in detail. We investigate alternative ways to extend the monogamy inequality to express a constraint on entanglement sharing valid for all four-qubit states, and perform an extensive numerical analysis of randomly generated four-qubit states to explore the properties of such extensions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. An algorithm is proposed that serves to handle full rank density matrices, when coming from a lower rank method to compute the convex-roof. This is in order to calculate an upper bound for any polynomial SL invariant multipartite entanglement measure E. Here, it is exemplifyed how this algorithm works, based on a method for calculating convex-roofs of rank two density matrices. It iteratively considers the decompositions of the density matrix into two states each, exploiting the knowledge for the rank-two case. The algorithm is therefore quasi exact as far as the two rank case is concerned, and it also gives hints where it should include more states in the decomposition of the density matrix. Focusing on the threetangle, I show the results the algorithm gives for two states, one of which being the $GHZ$-Werner state, for which the exact convex roof is known. It overestimates the threetangle in the state, thereby giving insight into the optimal decomposition the $GHZ$-Werner state has. As a proof of principle, I have run the algorithm for the threetangle on the transverse quantum Ising model. We consider rather general spin-$1/2$ lattices with large coordination numbers $Z$. Based on the monogamy of entanglement and other properties of the concurrence $C$, we derive rigorous bounds for the entanglement between neighboring spins, such as $C\leq 1/\sqrt{Z}$, which show that $C$ decreases for large $Z$. In addition, the concurrence $C$ measures the deviation from mean-field behavior and can only vanish if the mean-field ansatz yields an exact ground state of the Hamiltonian. We define one-dimensional particles with generalized exchange statistics. We investigate the connection between the concept of affine balancedness (a-balancedness) introduced in [Phys. Rev A. {\bf 85}, 032112 (2012)] and polynomial local SU invariants and the appearance of topological phases respectively. It is found that different types of a-balancedness correspond to different types of local SU invariants analogously to how different types of balancedness as defined in [New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 075025 (2010)] correspond to different types of local SL invariants. These different types of SU invariants distinguish between states exhibiting different topological phases. In the case of three qubits the different kinds of topological phases are fully distinguished by the three-tangle together with one more invariant. Using this we present a qualitative classification scheme based on balancedness of a state. While balancedness and local SL invariants of bidegree $(2n,0)$ classify the SL-semistable states [New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 075025 (2010), Phys. Rev. A {\bf 83} 052330 (2011)], a-balancedness and local SU invariants of bidegree $(2n-m,m)$ gives a more fine grained classification. In this scheme the a-balanced states form a bridge from the genuine entanglement of balanced states, invariant under the SL-group, towards the entanglement of unbalanced states characterized by U invariants of bidegree $(n,n)$. The aspects of many particle systems, as far as their entanglement is concerned, is highlighted. To this end we briefly review the bipartite measures of entanglement and the entanglement of pairs both for systems of distinguishable and indistinguishable particles. The analysis of these quantities in macroscopic systems shows that close to quantum phase transitions, the entanglement of many particles typically dominates that of pairs. This leads to an analysis of a method to construct many-body entanglement measures. SL-invariant measures are a generalization to quantities as the concurrence, and can be obtained with a formalism containing two (actually three) orthogonal antilinear operators. The main drawback of this antilinear framework, namely to measure these quantities in the experiment, is resolved by a formula linking the antilinear formalism to an equivalent linear framework.

We investigate the scaling and spatial distribution of genuine multiparticle entanglement in three- and four-spin reduced states of the one-dimensional XY-model at the quantum phase transition. Characterization and quantification of multipartite entanglement is one of the challenges in state-of-the-art experiments in quantum information processing. According to theory, this is achieved via entanglement monotones, that is, functions that do not increase under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). Typically such monotones include the wave function and its time-reversal (antilinear-operator formalism) or they are based on not completely positive maps (e.g., partial transpose). Therefore, they are not directly accessible to experimental observations. We show how entanglement monotones derived from polynomial local SL$(2,\CC)$ invariants can be re-written in terms of expectation values of observables. Consequently, the amount of entanglement---of specific SLOCC classes---in a given state can be extracted from the measurement of correlation functions of local operators., 6 pages, revtex4-1. We show that a positive homogeneous function that is invariant under determinant-1 stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) transformations defines an N-qubit entanglement monotone if and only if the homogeneous degree is not larger than four. In particular this implies that any power larger than one of the well-known N-tangle (N > 2) is not an entanglement monotone anymore. We then describe a common basis and formalism for the N-tangle and other known invariant polynomials of degree four. This allows us to elucidate the relation of the four-qubit invariants defined by Luque and Thibon [Phys. Rev. A67, 042303 (2003)] and the reduced two-qubit density matrices of the states under consideration. We review the exact treatment of the pairing correlation functions in the canonical ensemble. The key for the calculations has been provided by relating the discrete BCS model to known integrable theories corresponding to the so called Gaudin magnets with suitable boundary terms. In the present case the correlation functions can be accessed beyond the formal level, allowing the description of the cross-over from few electrons to the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we summarize the results on the finite size scaling behavior of the canonical pairing clarifying some puzzles emerged in the past. We propose a scheme for entangling two photons via the quantum Zeno effect, which describes the inhibition of quantum evolution by frequent measurements and is based on the difference between summing amplitudes and probabilities. For a given error probability $P_{\rm error}$, our scheme requires that the one-photon loss rate $\xi_{1\gamma}$ and the two-photon absorption rate $\xi_{2\gamma}$ in some medium satisfy $\xi_{1\gamma}/\xi_{2\gamma}=2P_{\rm error}^2/\pi^2$, which is significantly improved in comparison to previous approaches. We formulate the functional Bethe ansatz for bosonic (infinite dimensional) representations of the Yang-Baxter algebra. The main deviation from the standard approach consists in a half infinite 'Sklyanin lattice' made of the eigenvalues of the operator zeros of the Bethe annihilation operator. By a separation of variables, functional TQ equations are obtained for this half infinite lattice. They provide valuable information about the spectrum of a given Hamiltonian model. We apply this procedure to integrable spin-boson models subject to both twisted and open boundary conditions. In the case of general twisted and certain open boundary conditions polynomial solutions to these TQ equations are found and we compute the spectrum of both the full transfer matrix and its quasi-classical limit. For generic open boundaries we present a two-parameter family of Bethe equations, derived from TQ equations that are compatible with polynomial solutions for Q. We investigate the lower bound obtained from experimental data of a quantum state $\rho$, as proposed independently by G\"uhne et al. and Eisert et al. for mixed states of three qubits. The measure we consider is the convex-roof extended three-tangle. Our findings highlight an intimate relation to lower bounds obtained recently from so-called characteristic curves of a given entanglement measure. We apply the bounds to estimate the three-tangle present in recently performed experiments aimed at producing a three-qubit GHZ state. We discuss the possibility to interpret the residual entanglement for more than three qubits in terms of distributed multipartite entanglement, or, in other words, possible extensions of the Coffman-Kundu-Wootters monogamy equality to higher qubit numbers. Existing knowledge on entanglement in multipartite systems puts narrow constraints on the form of such extensions. We study various examples for families of pure four-qubit states for which the characterization of three-qubit and four-qubit entanglement in terms of polynomial invariants is known. These examples indicate that, although families with such extensions do exist, a generalized monogamy equality cannot be found along those lines.

The invariant-comb approach is a method to construct entanglement measures for multipartite systems of qubits. The essential step is the construction of an antilinear operator that we call {\em comb} in reference to the {\em hairy-ball theorem}. An appealing feature of this approach is that for qubits (or spins 1/2) the combs are automatically invariant under $SL(2,\CC)$, which implies that the obtained invariants are entanglement monotones by construction. By asking which property of a state determines whether or not it is detected by a polynomial $SL(2,\CC)$ invariant we find that it is the presence of a {\em balanced part} that persists under local unitary transformations. We present a detailed analysis for the maximally entangled states detected by such polynomial invariants, which leads to the concept of {\em irreducibly balanced} states. The latter indicates a tight connection with SLOCC classifications of qubit entanglement. \\ Combs may also help to define measures for multipartite entanglement of higher-dimensional subsystems. However, for higher spins there are many independent combs such that it is non-trivial to find an invariant one. By restricting the allowed local operations to rotations of the coordinate system (i.e. again to the $SL(2,\CC)$) we manage to define a unique extension of the concurrence to general half-integer spin with an analytic convex-roof expression for mixed states., Comment: 17 pages, revtex4. The role of SU(2) invariants for the classification of multiparty entanglement is discussed and exemplified for the Kempe invariant I_5 of pure three-qubit states. It is found to being an independent invariant only in presence of both W-type entanglement and threetangle. In this case, constant I_5 admits for a wide range of both threetangle and concurrences. Furthermore, the present analysis indicates that an SL^3 orbit of states with equal tangles but continuously varying I_5 must exist. This means that I_5 provides no information on the entanglement in the system in addition to that contained in the tangles (concurrences and threetangle) themselves. Together with the numerical evidence that I_5 is an entanglement monotone this implies that SU(2) invariance or the monotone property are too weak requirements for the characterization and quantification of entanglement for systems of three qubits, and that SL(2,C) invariance is required. The recent interest in aspects common to quantum information and condensed matter has prompted a prosperous activity at the border of these disciplines that were far distant until few years ago. Numerous interesting questions have been addressed so far. Here we review an important part of this field, the properties of the entanglement in many-body systems. We discuss the zero and finite temperature properties of entanglement in interacting spin, fermionic and bosonic model systems. Both bipartite and multipartite entanglement will be considered. At equilibrium we emphasize on how entanglement is connected to the phase diagram of the underlying model. The behavior of entanglement can be related, via certain witnesses, to thermodynamic quantities thus offering interesting possibilities for an experimental test. We give a complete solution for the three-tangle of mixed three-qubit states composed of a generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, a vertical bar 000 > + b vertical bar 111 >, and a generalized W state, c vertical bar 001 > + d vertical bar 010 > + f vertical bar 100 >. Using the methods introduced by Lohmayer et al (2006 Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 260502), we provide explicit expressions for the mixed-state three-tangle and the corresponding optimal decompositions for this more general case. We discuss aspects of the convex-roof extension of multipartite entanglement measures, that is, $SL(2,\CC)$ invariant tangles. We highlight two key concepts that contain valuable information about the tangle of a density matrix: the {\em zero-polytope} is a convex set of density matrices with vanishing tangle whereas the {\em convex characteristic curve} readily provides a non-trivial lower bound for the convex roof and serves as a tool for constructing the convex roof outside the zero-polytope. Both concepts are derived from the tangle for superpositions of the eigenstates of the density matrix. We construct commuting transfer matrices for models describing the interaction between a single quantum spin and a single bosonic mode using the quantum inverse scattering framework. The transfer matrices are obtained from certain inhomogeneous rational vertex models combining bosonic and spin representations of SU(2), subject to non-diagonal toroidal and open boundary conditions. Only open boundary conditions are found to lead to integrable Hamiltonians combining both rotating and counter-rotating terms in the interaction. If the boundary matrices can be brought to triangular form simultaneously, the spectrum of the model can be obtained by means of the algebraic Bethe ansatz after a suitable gauge transformation; the corresponding Hamiltonians are found to be non-hermitian. Alternatively, a certain quasi-classical limit of the transfer matrix is considered where hermitian Hamiltonians are obtained as members of a family of commuting operators; their diagonalization, however, remains an unsolved problem., 16 pages, 2 eps figures

We analyze the crossing of a quantum critical point based on exact results for the transverse XY model. In dependence of the change rate of the driving field, the evolution of the ground state is studied while the transverse magnetic field is tuned through the critical point with a linear ramping. The excitation probability is obtained exactly and is compared to previous studies and to the Landau-Zener formula, a long time solution for non-adiabatic transitions in two-level systems. The exact time dependence of the excitations density in the system allows to identify the adiabatic and diabatic regions during the sweep and to study the mesoscopic fluctuations of the excitations. The effect of white noise is investigated, where the critical point transmutes into a non-hermitian ``degenerate region''. Besides an overall increase of the excitations during and at the end of the sweep, the most destructive effect of the noise is the decay of the state purity that is enhanced by the passage through the degenerate region., 16 pages, 15 figures

We study the effect of symmetry breaking in a quantum phase transition on pairwise entanglement in spin-$1/2$ models. We give a set of conditions on correlation functions a model has to meet in order to keep the pairwise entanglement unchanged by a parity symmetry breaking. It turns out that all mean-field solvable models do meet this requirement, whereas the presence of strong correlations leads to a violation of this condition. This results in an order-induced enhancement of entanglement, and we report on two examples where this takes place.

We study mesoscopic pairing in the one dimensional repulsive Hubbard model and its interplay with the BCS model in the canonical ensemble. The key tool is comparing the Bethe ansatz equations of the two models in the limit of small Coulomb repulsion. For the ordinary Hubbard interaction the BCS Bethe equations with infinite pairing coupling are recovered; a finite pairing is obtained by considering a further density-dependent phase-correlation in the hopping amplitude of the Hubbard model. We find that spin degrees of freedom in the Hubbard ground state are arranged in a state of the BCS type, where the Cooper-pairs form an non-condensed liquid on a “lattice” of single particle energies provided by the Hubbard charge degrees of freedom; the condensation in the BCS ground state corresponds to Hubbard excitations constituted by a sea of spin singlets.

We provide a complete analysis of mixed three-qubit states composed of a GHZ state and a W state orthogonal to the former. We present optimal decompositions and convex roofs for the three-tangle. Further, we provide an analytical method to decide whether or not an arbitrary rank-2 state of three qubits has vanishing three-tangle. These results highlight intriguing differences compared to the properties of two-qubit mixed states, and may serve as a quantitative reference for future studies of entanglement in multipartite mixed states. In the present work we demonstrate how to realize 1d-optical closed lattice experimentally, including a {\it tunable} boundary phase-twist. The latter may induce ``persistent currents'', visible by studing the atoms' momentum distribution. We show how important phenomena in 1d-physics can be studied by physical realization of systems of trapped atoms in ring-shaped optical lattices. A mixture of bosonic and/or fermionic atoms can be loaded into the lattice, realizing a generic quantum system of many interacting particles., 10 pages, 5 figures. To be published in PRL

For the anisotropic XY model in transverse magnetic field, we analyze the ground state and its concurrence-free point for generic anisotropy, and the time evolution of initial Bell states created in a fully polarized background and on the ground state. We find that the pairwise entanglement propagates with a velocity proportional to the reduced interaction for all the four Bell states. A transmutation from singlet-like to triplet-like states is observed during the propagation. Characteristic for the anisotropic models is the instantaneous creation of pairwise entanglement from a fully polarized state; furthermore, the propagation of pairwise entanglement is suppressed in favor of a creation of different types of entanglement. Employing the Holstein?Primakoff transformation, we obtain an approximate description of both the ground state entanglement and the entanglement dynamics in a spin system in terms of spin waves. As an example, we apply the method to a two-dimensional spin system.

In this paper we discuss the entanglement near a quantum phase transition by analyzing the properties of the concurrence for a class of exactly solvable models in one dimenion. Entanglement can be classified in the framework of the scaling theory of phase transition. There is a profound difference between the classical correlations, whose correlation length diverges at the phase transiton, and non-local quantum correlations that remain, in general, short ranged.

We calculate exactly matrix elements between states that are not eigenstates of the quantum XY model for general anisotropy. Such quantities therefore describe non equilibrium properties of the system; the Hamiltonian does not contain any time dependence. These matrix elements are expressed as a sum of Pfaffians. An SL-invariant extension of the concurrence to higher local Hilbert-space dimension is due to its relation with the determinant of the matrix of a $d\times d$ two qudits state, which is the only SL-invariant of polynomial degree $d$. This determinant is written in terms of antilinear expectation values of the local $SL(d)$ operators. We use the permutation invariance of the comb-condition for creating further local antilinear operators which are orthogonal to the original operator. It means that the symmetric group acts transitively on the space of combs of a given order. This extends the mechanism for writing $SL(2)$-invariants for qubits to qudits. I outline the method, that in principle works for arbitrary dimension $d$, explicitely for spin 1, and spin 3/2. For the exactly solved reduced BCS model an electrostatic analogy exists; in particular it served to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of the model from the Richardson Bethe ansatz equations. We present an electrostatic analogy for a wider class of integrable Hamiltonians with pairing force interactions. We apply it to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of this class of models. In this Letter we discuss the entanglement near a quantum phase transition by analyzing the properties of the concurrence for a class of exactly solvable models in one dimension. We study descendants of inhomogeneous vertex models with boundary reflections when the spin-spin scattering is assumed to be quasi--classical. This corresponds to consider certain power expansion of the boundary-Yang-Baxter equation (or reflection equation). As final product, integrable $su(2)$-spin chains interacting with a long range with $XXZ$ anisotropy are obtained. The spin-spin couplings are non uniform, and a non uniform tunable external magnetic field is applied; the latter can be obtained when the boundary conditions are assumed to be quasi-classical as well. The exact spectrum is achieved by algebraic Bethe ansatz. Having realized the $su(2)$ operators in terms of fermions, the class of models we found turns out to describe confined fermions with pairing force interactions. The class of models presented in this paper is a one-parameter extension of certain Hamiltonians constructed previously. I generalize the concept of balancedness to qudits with arbitrary dimension $d$. It is an extension of the concept of balancedness in New J. Phys. {\bf 12}, 075025 (2010) [1]. At first, I define maximally entangled states as being the stochastic states (with local reduced density matrices $\id/d$ for a $d$-dimensional local Hilbert space) that are not product states and show that every so-defined maximal genuinely multi-qudit entangled state is balanced. Furthermore, all irreducibly balanced states are genuinely multi-qudit entangled and are locally equivalent with respect to $SL(d)$ transformations (i.e. the local filtering transformations (LFO)) to a maximally entangled state. In particular the concept given here gives the maximal genuinely multi-qudit entangled states for general local Hilbert space dimension $d$. We study integrable models for electrons in metals when the single particle spectrum is discrete. The electron-electron interactions are BCS-like pairing, Coulomb repulsion, and spin exchange coupling. These couplings are, in general, nonuniform in the sense that they depend on the levels occupied by the interacting electrons. By using the realization of spin 1/2-operators in terms of electrons the models describe spin 1/2 models with nonuniform long range interactions and external magnetic field. The integrability and the exact solution arise since the model Hamiltonians can be constructed in terms of Gaudin models. Uniform pairing and the resulting orthodox model correspond to an isotropic limit of the Gaudin Hamiltonians. We find an integrable generalization of the BCS model with non-uniform Coulomb and pairing interaction. The Hamiltonian is integrable by construction since it is a functional of commuting operators; these operators, which therefore are constants of motion of the model, contain the anisotropic Gaudin Hamiltonians. The exact solution is obtained diagonalizing them by means of Bethe Ansatz. Uniform pairing and Coulomb interaction are obtained as the ``isotropic limit'' of the Gaudin Hamiltonians.
