Abstract

Abstract The cosmic-ray database, CRDB, has been gathering cosmic-ray data for the community since 2013. We present a new release, CRDB v4.1, providing many new quantities and data sets, with several improvements made on the code and web interface, and with new visualisation tools. CRDB relies on the MySQL database management system, jquery and table-sorter libraries for queries and sorting, and PHP web pages and AJAX protocol for displays. A REST interface enables user queries from command line or scripts. A new (pip-installable) CRDB python library is developed and extensive jupyter notebook examples are provided. This release contains cosmic-ray dipole anisotropy data, high-energy $$\bar{p}/p$$ p ¯ / p upper limits, some unpublished LEE and AESOP lepton time series, many more ultra-high energy data, and a few missing old data sets. It also includes high-precision data from the last three years, in particular the hundreds of thousands AMS-02 and PAMELA data time series (time-dependent plots are now enabled). All these data are shown in a gallery of plots, which can be easily reproduced from the public notebook examples. CRDB contains 316,126 data points from 504 publications, in 4111 sub-experiments from 131 experiments.

Abstract

Abstract The muonic and electromagnetic components of air showers are sensitive to the mass of the primary cosmic particle. The sizes of the components can be measured with particle detectors on ground, and the electromagnetic component in addition indirectly via its radio emission in the atmosphere. The electromagnetic particles do not reach the ground for very inclined showers. On the contrary, the atmosphere is transparent for the radio emission and its footprint on ground increases with the zenith angle. Therefore, the radio technique offers a reliable detection over the full range of zenith angles, and in particular for inclined showers. In this work, the mass sensitivity of a combination of the radio emission with the muons is investigated in a case study for the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory using CORSIKA Monte Carlo simulations of showers in the EeV energy range. It is shown, that the radio-muon combination features superior mass separation power in particular for inclined showers, when compared to established mass observables such as a combination of muons and electrons or the shower maximum $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ Xmax . Accurate measurements of the energy-dependent mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are essential to understand their still unknown origin. Thus, the combination of muon and radio detectors can enhance the scientific performance of future air-shower arrays and offers a promising upgrade option for existing arrays.

Abstract

Modern large-scale astroparticle setups measure high-energy particles, gamma rays, neutrinos, radio waves, and the recently discovered gravitational waves. Ongoing and future experiments are located worldwide. The data acquired have different formats, storage concepts, and publication policies. Such differences are a crucial point in the era of Big Data and of multi-messenger analysis in astroparticle physics. We propose an open science web platform called ASTROPARTICLE.ONLINE which enables us to publish, store, search, select, and analyze astroparticle data. In the first stage of the project, the following components of a full data life cycle concept are under development: describing, storing, and reusing astroparticle data; software to perform multi-messenger analysis using deep learning; and outreach for students, post-graduate students, and others who are interested in astroparticle physics. Here we describe the concepts of the web platform and the first obtained results, including the meta data structure for astroparticle data, data analysis by using convolution neural networks, description of the binary data, and the outreach platform for those interested in astroparticle physics. The KASCADE-Grande and TAIGA cosmic-ray experiments were chosen as pilot examples.

Abstract

International audience; To take up the challenge of understanding the origin of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), new observational means appear necessary. The JEM-EUSO Collaboration has undertaken to open the space road to UHECR studies. For more than a decade, it has been developing a realistic program to measure the UHECRs from space with unprecedented aperture, together with complementary scientific objectives in a broader multidisciplinary context. Several intermediate missions have already been completed (on the ground: EUSO-TA; under stratospheric ballons: EUSO-Balloon and EUSO-SPB1; in space: TUS, and on-board the ISS: MINI-EUSO), and others are in preparation for flight (EUSO-SPB2), under review (K-EUSO: currently on hold), or proposed for the next decade (POEMMA). We report on the general status of the JEM-EUSO program, underlining that its technology has now reached operational maturity, and is ready for actual cosmic-ray shower detection from above.

Astrophysical neutrinos are excellent probes of astroparticle physics and high-energy physics. With energies far beyond solar, supernovae, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos, high-energy and ultra-high-energy neutrinos probe fundamental physics from the TeV scale to the EeV scale and beyond. They are sensitive to physics both within and beyond the Standard Model through their production mechanisms and in their propagation over cosmological distances. They carry unique information about their extreme non-thermal sources by giving insight into regions that are opaque to electromagnetic radiation. This white paper describes the opportunities astrophysical neutrino observations offer for astrophysics and high-energy physics, today and in coming years. Abstract

The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract

Computing and software for big science 6(1), 6 (2022). doi:10.1007/s41781-022-00081-7, PUNCH4NFDI (Particles, Universe, NuClei and Hadrons for the NFDI) aims at developing concepts and tools for the efficient management of digital research products in fundamental physics research. At the heart of the research products are scientific data sets that should be made interoperable and available to a broad scientific community and the public for a sustainable usage (���open data���). The first PUNCH4NFDI ���Open Data Workshop��� gave the opportunity for an initial survey of existing and planned open data initiatives within the PUNCH science field. The paper addresses the conceptual differences and commonalities presented in the workshop. Existing open datasets were presented and discussed. Abstract

KASCADE-Grande and its original array of KASCADE were dedicated to measure individual air showers of cosmic rays with great detail in the primary energy range of 100 TeV up to 1 EeV. The experiment has significantly contributed to investigations of the energy spectrum and chemical composition of cosmic rays in the transition region from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays as well as to the further development of hadronic interaction models through validity tests using the multi-detector information from KASCADE-Grande. Though the data accumulation was completed in 2013, the data analysis is still continuing. Recently, we investigate the reliability of the new hadronic interactions model of the Sibyll version 2.3d with the combined data from KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande, and compare it to the predictions of different hadronic interaction models. In addition, we update the web-based platform of the KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC), where now full datasets from KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande and the corresponding Monte-Carlo simulated events are available., Presented at the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

Abstract

KCDC, the 'KASCADE Cosmic-ray Data Centre', is a web-based interface where initially the scientific data from the completed air-shower experiment KASCADE-Grande was made available for the astroparticle community as well as for the interested public. Over the past 7 years, we have continuously extended the data shop with various releases and increased both the number of detector components from the KASCADE-Grande experiment and the data sets and corresponding simulations. With the latest releases we added a new and independent data shop for a specific KASCADE-Grande event selection and by that created the technology for integrating further data shops and data of other experiments, like the data of the air-shower experiment MAKET-ANI in Armenia. In addition, we made available educational examples how to use the data, more than 100 cosmic ray energy spectra from various experiments, and recently attached a public server with access to Jupyter notebooks. 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC 2021, Berlin, online, Germany, 12 Jul 2021 - 23 Jul 2021; Proceedings of Science / International School for Advanced Studies (ICRC2021), 938 (2021). doi:10.22323/1.395.0938, Challenges faced by researchers in multi-messenger astroparticle physics include: computing-intensive search and preprocessing related to the diversity of content and formats of the data from different observatories as well as to data fragmentation over separate storage locations; inconsistencies in user interfaces for data retrieval; lack of the united infrastructure solutions suitable for both data gathering and online analysis, e.g. analyses employing deep neural networks. In order to address solving these issues, the German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI) was created. In addition, we support activities for communicating our research field to the public. The approaches proposed by the project are based on the concept of data life cycle, which assumes a particular pipeline of data curation used for every unit of the data from the moment of its retrieval or creation through the stages of data preprocessing, analysis, publishing and archival. The movement towards unified data curation schemes is essential to increase the benefits gained in the analysis of geographically distributed or content-diverse data. Within the project, an infrastructure for effective astroparticle data curation and online analysis was developed. Abstract

International audience; The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) instrument was launched out of Wanaka, New Zealand, by NASA in April, 2017 as a mission of opportunity. The detector was developed as part of the Joint Experimental Missions for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) program toward a space-based ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) telescope with the main objective to make the first observation of UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space. The EUSO-SPB1 instrument is a refractive telescope consisting of two 1m$^{2}$ Fresnel lenses with a high-speed UV camera at the focal plane. The camera has 2304 individual pixels capable of single photoelectron counting with a time resolution of 2.5μ s. A detailed performance study including calibration was done on ground. We separately evaluated the properties of the Photo Detector Module (PDM) and the optical system in the laboratory. An end-to-end test of the instrument was performed during a field campaign in the West Desert in Utah, USA at the Telescope Array (TA) site in September 2016. The campaign lasted for 8 nights. In this article we present the results of the preflight laboratory and field tests. Based on the tests performed in the field, it was determined that EUSO-SPB1 has a field of view of 11.1$^{∘}$ and an absolute photo-detection efficiency of 10%. We also measured the light flux necessary to obtain a 50% trigger efficiency using laser beams. These measurements were crucial for us to perform an accurate post flight event rate calculation to validate our cosmic ray search. Laser beams were also used to estimated the reconstruction angular resolution. Finally, we performed a flat field measurement in flight configuration at the launch site prior to the launch providing a uniformity of the focal surface better than 6%.

Abstract

Multi-messenger astroparticle physics is still a young field of research and is hardly covered in educational curricula or outreach. The astroparticle.online project, founded in 2018 within the framework of the German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI), encompasses an endeavor to address this issue. Within the project, scientists from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Irkutsk State University (ISU) and Moscow State University (MSU) developed a range of educational materials: articles, video lectures, tests, problems to solve, laboratory works and pre-trained neural networks for particle recognition. The project is supported by the KASCADE Cosmic-ray Data Center (KCDC) and GRADLCI data aggregation platform, where one can retrieve and analyze open scientific data from various experiments. The main audience of the project's activities are high school and undergraduate students. All the educational materials are available online at the project's web portal astroparticle.online, they are used both in online and offline masterclasses organized by the project members, and also as the supplementary content by educational organizations: for example, in the ISU course "Introduction to experimental methods in high energy astrophysics". Over the time the project has been operating, more than 150 students took part in its activities. This contribution will cover the experience gained while running the project for more than 3 years, our challenges and developments.

Abstract

The Galactic Center is visible from the South Pole throughout the year, at an inclination of 61°. High energy gamma-rays arriving at the South Pole from this direction, will produce inclined air showers in the atmosphere. Since radio emission of inclined showers leaves a large footprint on the ground, a measurement of the electromagnetic shower component using the radio technique is possible. It is already known that radio detection of air showers helps in the reconstruction of the shower maximum and the energy of the air shower with a very good accuracy. Using radio detectors along with particle detectors enhances the detection accuracy of the air shower events and helps in separating the gamma-ray induced events. IceCube-Gen2, the proposed extension of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, will enhance both the surface and in-ice capabilities of the facility. Ideas for adding surface radio antennas are under discussion in addition to the upgrade and extension of the IceTop surface array using scintillator detectors. While the scintillators will primarily be used for improving the calibration and lowering the veto energy threshold for distinguishing cosmic ray from astrophysical neutrino events, they can also be used with radio antennas to search for photons of PeV energies from the Galactic Center. Using such a setup at the South Pole can help in the identification of the Galactic Center as a PeVatron. In particular, the key for such a search is to use frequencies higher than the standard frequencies used by air-shower radio experiments, which thereby lowers the energy threshold.

Abstract

The Hamamatsu UV-light enhanced 64-channel SiPM array of the newest generation (S13361-3050AS-08) has been examined for the purpose of being used for the Silicon Elementary Cell Add-on (SiECA) of the EUSO-SPB balloon experiment. Characterization measurements have been performed with the newly installed Single Photon Calibration Stand at KIT (SPOCK). The results of the characterization measurements including the breakdown voltage, the gain, the PDE, the dark-count rate and the crosstalk probability of all 64 SiPM channels are presented. Additional measurements of the SiPM sensitivity to photons with wavelengths lower than 400nm show an improved PDE for small wavelengths compared to the SiPM array S12642-0808PA-50, which was also investigated for comparison. The response dynamics have been investigated for low numbers of incoming photons. Abstract

The `KASCADE Cosmic ray Data Centre' is a web portal (\url{https://kcdc.ikp.kit.edu}), where the data of the astroparticle physics experiment KASCADE-Grande are made available for the interested public. The KASCADE experiment was a large-area detector for the measurement of high-energy cosmic rays via the detection of extensive air showers. The multi-detector installations KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande stopped the active data acquisition in 2013 of all its components end of 2012 after more than 20 years of data taking. In several updates since our first release in 2013 with KCDC we provide the public measured and reconstructed parameters of more than 433 million air showers. In addition, KCDC provides meta data information and documentation to enable a user outside the community of experts to perform their own data analysis. Simulation data from three different high energy interaction models have been made available as well as a compilation of measured and published spectra from various experiments. Abstract

The evolution of the muon content of very high energy air showers (EAS) in the atmosphere is investigated with data of the KASCADE-Grande observatory. For this purpose, the muon attenuation length in the atmosphere is obtained to $\Lambda_\mu = 1256 \, \pm 85 \, ^{+229}_{-232}(\mbox{syst})\, \mbox{g/cm}^2$ from the experimental data for shower energies between $10^{16.3}$ and $10^{17.0} \, \mbox{eV}$. Comparison of this quantity with predictions of the high-energy hadronic interaction models QGSJET-II-02, SIBYLL 2.1, QGSJET-II-04 and EPOS-LHC reveals that the attenuation of the muon content of measured EAS in the atmosphere is lower than predicted. Deviations are, however, less significant with the post-LHC models. The presence of such deviations seems to be related to a difference between the simulated and the measured zenith angle evolutions of the lateral muon density distributions of EAS, which also causes a discrepancy between the measured absorption lengths of the density of shower muons and the predicted ones at large distances from the EAS core. The studied deficiencies show that all four considered hadronic interaction models fail to describe consistently the zenith angle evolution of the muon content of EAS in the aforesaid energy regime., Comment: Published in Astroparticle Physics 95 (2017) 25-43

36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC2019, Madison, USA, 24 Jul 2019 - 1 Aug 2019; PoS(ICRC2019)284 (2019)., A data life cycle (DLC) is a high-level data processing pipeline that involves data acquisition, event reconstruction, data analysis, publication, archiving, and sharing. For astroparticle physics a DLC is particularly important due to the geographical and content diversity of the research field. A dedicated and experiment spanning analysis and data centre would ensure that multi-messenger analyses can be carried out using state-of-the-art methods. The German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI) is a joint project of the KASCADE-Grande and TAIGA collaborations, aimed at developing a concept and creating a DLC prototype that takes into account the data processing features specific for the research field. An open science system based on the KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC), which is a web-based platform to provide the astroparticle physics data for the general public, must also include effective methods for distributed data storage algorithms and techniques to allow the community to perform simulations and analyses with sophisticated machine learning methods. The aim is to achieve more efficient analyses of the data collected in different, globally dispersed observatories, as well as a modern education to Big Data Scientist in the synergy between basic research and the information society. The contribution covers the status and future plans of the initiative.

Abstract

International audience; The radio detection technique has successfully been applied to the measurement of cosmic-ray induced air showers with energies above 10^16 eV. A majority of these measurements are performed in the frequency band of 30-80 MHz, by the existing radio air-shower experiments. Recent results of a simulation study with CoREAS show that the optimisation of the frequency band improves the signal-to-noise ratio. This in turn lowers the energy threshold of detection by an order of magnitude. This talk will focus on the universal application of such a frequency optimisation for all future radio air-shower arrays, which will improve the performance of these future arrays. For this, a simulation study performed for the locations of IceTop, GRAND and the Pierre Auger Observatory using air showers generated by cosmic rays, gamma-rays and neutrinos is utilised.

Abstract

The muonic and electromagnetic components of air showers are sensitive to the mass of the primary cosmic particle. The sizes of the components can be measured with particle detectors on ground, and the electromagnetic component in addition indirectly via its radio emission in the atmosphere. The electromagnetic particles do not reach the ground for very inclined showers. On the contrary, the atmosphere is transparent for the radio emission and its footprint on ground increases with the zenith angle. Therefore, the radio technique offers a reliable detection over the full range of zenith angles, and in particular for inclined showers. In this work, the mass sensitivity of a combination of the radio emission with the muons is investigated in a case study for the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory using CORSIKA Monte Carlo simulations of showers in the EeV energy range. It is shown, that the radio-muon combination features superior mass separation power in particular for inclined showers, when compared to established mass observables such as a combination of muons and electrons or the shower maximum $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ . Accurate measurements of the energy-dependent mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays are essential to understand their still unknown origin. Thus, the combination of muon and radio detectors can enhance the scientific performance of future air-shower arrays and offers a promising upgrade option for existing arrays.

Abstract

An upgrade of the present IceCube surface array (IceTop) with scintillation detectors and possibly radio antennas is foreseen. The enhanced array will calibrate the impact of snow accumulation on the reconstruction of cosmic-ray showers detected by IceTop as well as improve the veto capabilities of the surface array. In addition, such a hybrid surface array of radio antennas, scintillators and Cherenkov tanks will enable a number of complementary science targets for IceCube such as enhanced accuracy to mass composition of cosmic rays, search for PeV photons from the Galactic Center, or more thorough tests of the hadronic interaction models. Two prototype stations with 7 scintillation detectors each have been already deployed at the South Pole in January 2018. Abstract

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a digital antenna array for the detection of radio emission from cosmic-ray air showers in the frequency band of 30 to 80 MHz and for primary energies above 100 PeV. The standard analysis of Tunka-Rex includes events with zenith angle of up to 50$^\circ$. This cut is determined by the efficiency of the external trigger. However, due to the air-shower footprint increasing with zenith angle and due to the more efficient generation of radio emission (the magnetic field in the Tunka valley is almost vertical), there are a number of ultra-high-energy inclined events detected by Tunka-Rex. In this work we present a first analysis of a subset of inclined events detected by Tunka-Rex. Abstract

Physical review letters 124(5), 051103 (1-9) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.124.051103, This paper presents the results from point-like neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a point-like source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above $\sim1\,$TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the Northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of $2.9\,\sigma$ after accounting for statistical trials. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the Northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3$\,\sigma$ significance. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the ten years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a digital radio array operating in the frequency band of 30-80 MHz and detecting radio emission from air-showers produced by cosmic rays with energies above 100 PeV. The experiment is installed at the site of the TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) observatory and performs joint measurements with the co-located particle and air-Cherenkov detectors in passive mode receiving a trigger from the latter. Tunka-Rex collects data since 2012, and during the last five years went through several upgrades. As a result the density of the antenna field was increased by three times since its commission. In this contribution we present the latest results of Tunka-Rex experiment, particularly an updated analysis and efficiency study, which have been applied to the measurement of the mean shower maximum as a function of energy for cosmic rays of energies up to EeV. The future plans are also discussed: investigations towards an energy spectrum of cosmic rays with Tunka-Rex and their mass composition using a combination of Tunka-Rex data with muon measurements by the particle detector Tunka-Grande., Comment: ARENA2018 proceedings

SENSE, a roadmap for the ideal low light-level sensor development is a project funded by the European Commission under Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open Coordination and Support Action (CSA). It aims at coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the RD the Universite de Geneve, Switzerland; the Max-Planck Institute for Physics, Germany and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. Several international experts for all areas of LLL development are involved in SENSE, some advise the project n the Experts Group and the others in the working group of the project which is regulated by a Cooperation Agreement.

Abstract

In this paper we study, using Monte Carlo simulations, the possibility to discriminate the mass of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) by combining information obtained from the maximum X m a x μ of the muon production rate longitudinal profile of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) and the number of muons, Nμ, which hit an array of detectors located in the horizontal plane. We investigate the sensitivity of the 2D distribution X m a x μ versus Nμ to the mass of the primary particle generating the air shower. To this purpose we analyze a set of CORSIKA showers induced by protons and iron nuclei at energies of 1019 eV and 1020 eV, at five angles of incidence, 0°, 37°, 48°, 55° and 60°. Using the simulations we obtain the 2D Probability Functions P r o b ( X m a x μ , N μ | p ) and P r o b ( X m a x μ , N μ | F e ) which give the probability that a shower induced by a proton or iron nucleus contributes to a specific point on the plane ( X m a x μ , Nμ). Then we construct the probability functions P r o b ( p | X m a x μ , N μ ) and P r o b ( F e | X m a x μ , N μ ) which give the probability that a certain point on the plane ( X m a x μ , Nμ) corresponds to a shower initiated by a proton or an iron nucleus, respectively. Finally, a test of this procedure using a Bayesian approach, confirms an improved accuracy of the primary mass estimation in comparison with the results obtained using only the X m a x μ distributions.

Ongoing and future experiments are located worldwide. The data acquired have different formats, storage concepts, and publication policies. Such differences are a crucial point in the era of Big Data and of multi-messenger analysis in astroparticle physics. We propose an open science web platform called ASTROPARTICLE.ONLINE which enables us to publish, store, search, select, and analyze astroparticle data. In the first stage of the project, the following components of a full data life cycle concept are under development: describing, storing, and reusing astroparticle data; software to perform multi-messenger analysis using deep learning; and outreach for students, post-graduate students, and others who are interested in astroparticle physics. Here we describe the concepts of the web platform and the first obtained results, including the meta data structure for astroparticle data, data analysis by using convolution neural networks, description of the binary data, and the outreach platform for those interested in astroparticle physics. Modern experimental astroparticle physics features large-scale setups measuring different messengers, namely high-energy particles generated by cosmic accelerators (e.g. supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei, etc): cosmic and gamma rays, neutrinos and recently discovered gravitational waves. Ongoing and future experiments are distributed over the Earth including ground, underground/underwater setups as well as balloon payloads and spacecrafts. The data acquired by these experiments have different formats, storage concepts and publication policies. Such differences are a crucial issue in the era of big data and of multi-messenger analysis strategies in astroparticle physics. We propose a service ASTROPARTICLE.ONLINE in the frame of which we develop an open science system which enables to publish, store, search, select and analyse astroparticle physics data. The cosmic-ray experiments KASCADE-Grande and TAIGA were chosen as pilot experiments to be included in this framework. In the first step of our initiative we will develop and test the following components of the full data life cycle concept: (i) describing, storing and reusing of astroparticle data; (ii) software for performing multi-experiment and multi-messenger analyses like deep-learning methods; (iii) outreach including example applications and tutorial for students and scientists outside the specific research field. In the present paper we describe the concepts of our initiative, and in particular the plans toward a common, federated astroparticle data storage.

Abstract

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is an array of 63 antennas located in the Tunka Valley, Siberia. It detects radio pulses in the 30-80 MHz band produced during the air-shower development. As shown by Tunka-Rex, a sparse radio array with about 200 m spacing is able to reconstruct the energy and the depth of the shower maximum with satisfactory precision using simple methods based on parameters of the lateral distribution of amplitudes. The LOFAR experiment has shown that a sophisticated treatment of all individually measured amplitudes of a dense antenna array can make the precision comparable with the resolution of existing optical techniques. We develop these ideas further and present a method based on the treatment of time series of measured signals, i.e. each antenna station provides several points (trace) instead of a single one (amplitude or power). We use the measured shower axis and energy as input for CoREAS simulations: for each measured event we simulate a set of air-showers with proton, helium, nitrogen and iron as primary particle (each primary is simulated about ten times to cover fluctuations in the shower maximum due to the first interaction). Simulated radio pulses are processed with the Tunka-Rex detector response and convoluted with the measured signals. A likelihood fit determines how well the simulated event fits to the measured one. The positions of the shower maxima are defined from the distribution of chi-square values of these fits. When using this improved method instead of the standard one, firstly, the shower maximum of more events can be reconstructed, secondly, the resolution is increased. The performance of the method is demonstrated on the data acquired by the Tunka-Rex detector in 2012-2014.

Abstract

Tunka-Rex (Tunka Radio Extension) is an antenna array for cosmic-ray detection located in Siberia. Previous studies of cosmic rays with Tunka-Rex have shown high precision in determining the energy of the primary particle and the possibility to reconstruct the depth of the shower maximum. The next step is the reconstruction of the mass composition and the energy spectrum of cosmic rays. One of the main problems appearing within this task is to estimate the detection efficiency of the instrument, and the exposure of the observations. The detection efficiency depends on properties of the primary cosmic rays, such as energy and arrival direction, as well as on many parameters of the instrument: density of the array, efficiency of the receiving antennas, signal-detection threshold, data-acquisition acceptance, and trigger properties. More than that, the configuration of detector changes with time. During the measurements some parts of the detector can provide corrupted data or sometimes do not operate. All these features should be taken into account for an estimation of the detection efficiency. For each energy and arrival direction we estimate the detection probability and effective area of the instrument. To estimate the detection probability of a shower we use a simple Monte Carlo model, which predicts the size of the footprint of the radio emission as function of the primary energy and arrival direction (taking into account the geometry of Earth's magnetic field). Combining these approaches we calculate the event statistics and exposure for each run. This is the first accurate study of the exposure for irregular large-scale radio arrays taking into account most important features of detection, which will be used for the measurement of primary cosmic-ray spectra with Tunka-Rex.

Abstract

The KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC) is a web-based platform to provide scientific data for the general public. KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande fully completed the data accumulation at the end of 2013 after more than 20 years of measurements. The main purpose of KCDC is to archive original data such as from KASCADE to offer long-term scientific data for the high-energy astroparticle physics community as well as for students and the interested public via a sophisticated web portal. Recently, a new version named NABOO was released, based on a completely new back-end database and software. In addition, the amount of data increased by factor 3 compared to the previous release. Data from the Grande detector array are now also available. In this contribution, the KCDC web portal and the data availability as well as future plans will be discussed.

Abstract

The KASCADE-Grande experiment operated at KIT from January 2004 to November 2012, measuring EAS generated by primary cosmic rays in the 10 16 –10 18 eV energy range. The experiment detected, for each single event, with a high resolution, the total number of charged particles ( N ch ) and of muons ( N μ ). In this contribution we present the latest results about: (i) The measurement of the all particle energy spectrum, discussing the influence of the hadronic interaction model used to derive the energy calibration of the experimental data. (ii) The energy spectra derived separating the events according to the N μ / N ch ratio. This technique allowed us to unveil a steepening of the spectrum of heavy primaries at E ~ 10 16.92 ± 0.04 eV and a hardening of the spectrum of light primaries at E ~ 10 17.08 ± 0.08 eV . (iii) The elemental spectra (for five mass groups) obtained applying a detailed unfolding analysis technique. (iv) A search for large scale anisotropies.

Abstract

Radio detection of air showers in the current era has progressed immensely to effectively extract the properties of these air showers. Primary cosmic rays with energies of hundreds of PeV have been successfully measured with the method of radio detection. There are also attempts to observe high-energy neutrinos with this technique. Current radio experiments measuring cosmic-ray air showers mostly operate in the frequency range of 30-80 MHz. An optimization of the frequency band of operation can be done for maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio that can be achieved by an array of radio antennas at the South Pole, operated along with IceTop. Such an array can improve the reconstruction of air showers performed with IceTop. The prospect of using such an optimized radio array for measuring gamma rays of PeV energies from the Galactic Center is discussed., To be published in the proceedings of the ARENA2018 conference

Abstract

The Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex) is a digital antenna array, which measures the radio emission of the cosmic-ray air-showers in the frequency band of 30-80 MHz. Tunka-Rex is co-located with TAIGA experiment in Siberia and consists of 63 antennas, 57 of them are in a densely instrumented area of about 1 km\textsuperscript{2}. In the present work we discuss the improvements of the signal reconstruction applied for the Tunka-Rex. At the first stage we implemented matched filtering using averaged signals as template. The simulation study has shown that matched filtering allows one to decrease the threshold of signal detection and increase its purity. However, the maximum performance of matched filtering is achievable only in case of white noise, while in reality the noise is not fully random due to different reasons. To recognize hidden features of the noise and treat them, we decided to use convolutional neural network with autoencoder architecture. Taking the recorded trace as an input, the autoencoder returns denoised trace, i.e. removes all signal-unrelated amplitudes. We present the comparison between standard method of signal reconstruction, matched filtering and autoencoder, and discuss the prospects of application of neural networks for lowering the threshold of digital antenna arrays for cosmic-ray detection., Comment: ARENA2018 proceedings

Abstract

We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Abstract

One of the main aims of the LOPES experiment was the evaluation of the absolute amplitudeof the radio signal of air showers. This is of special interest since the radio technique offers the pos-sibility for an independent and highly precise determination of the energy scale of cosmic rays onthe basis of signal predictions from Monte Carlo simulations. For the calibration of the amplitudemeasured by LOPES we used an external source. Previous comparisons of LOPES measurementsand simulations of the radio signal amplitude predicted by CoREAS revealed a discrepancy of theorder of a factor of two. A re-measurement of the reference calibration source, now performed forthe free field, was recently performed by the manufacturer. The updated calibration values leadto a lowering of the reconstructed electric field measured by LOPES by a factor of 2:6 0:2 andtherefore to a significantly better agreement with CoREAS simulations. We discuss the updatedcalibration and its impact on the LOPES analysis results.2

Abstract

As of 2023, the low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array will go online in Australia. It will constitute the largest and most powerful low-frequency radio-astronomical observatory to date, and will facilitate a rich science programme in astronomy and astrophysics. With modest engineering changes, it will also be able to measure cosmic rays via the radio emission from extensive air showers. The extreme antenna density and the homogeneous coverage provided by more than 60,000 antennas within an area of one km$^2$ will push radio detection of cosmic rays in the energy range around 10$^{17}$ eV to ultimate precision, with superior capabilities in the reconstruction of arrival direction, energy, and an expected depth-of-shower-maximum resolution of 6~g/cm${^2}$., To be published in the Proceedings of the ARENA2016 conference, Groningen, The Netherlands; replaced with final published version in v3

Abstract

The energy reconstruction at KASCADE-Grande is based on a combination of the shower size and the total muon number, which are both estimated for each individual air shower event. We present investigations where we employed a second method to reconstruct the primary energy using S(500), which are the charged particle densities inferred with the KASCADE-Grande detector at a distance of 500 m from the shower axis. We considered the attenuation of inclined showers by applying the “Constant Intensity Cut” method and we employed a simulation-derived calibration to convert the recorded S(500) into primary energy. We observed a systematic shift in the S(500)-derived energy compared with previously reported results obtained using the standard reconstruction technique. However, a comparison of the two methods based on simulated and measured data showed that this shift only appeared in the measured data. Our investigations showed that this shift was caused mainly by the inadequate description of the shape of the lateral density distribution in the simulations.
