The present study examined the Italian version of the Work as Meaning Inventory and Work as Meaning Inventory for University students through a network perspective. Network analysis was applied to 505 Italian workers assessed via the Work as Meaning Inventory and 214 Italian university students assessed via the Work as Meaning Inventory for University students. The comparison between the factor and network model of both Work as Meaning Inventory and Work as Meaning Inventory for University students showed a higher fit for network models. Network analysis revealed that both Work as Meaning Inventory and Work as Meaning Inventory for University students items enclosed in the Positive meaning dimension had the highest centrality; the most connected item with the overall network was the item 2 (work/study that contributes to personal growth) able to link together the three dimensions (positive meaning, meaning-making through work, greater good motivations). Findings suggested that a network approach can provide a promising realm to expand the understanding of meaning at work and meaning at study.

The aim of the present article is to purpose new career counselling perspectives for vulnerable workers in the time of COVID-19 recession. We summarize perspectives on vulnerable workers following a recently advanced taxonomy on the work precarity framework characterized by three broad categories: precarity of work (i.e. fear and concern associated with the continuity of employment), precarity at work (i.e. psychosocial or physical safety at work, including discrimination, harassment, and unsafe working conditions), and precarity from work (i.e. uncertainty and insecurity due to maintaining employment that does not satisfy the basic needs of workers). These three facets of precariousness are frequently experienced by vulnerable workers, and they are related to poorer mental and physical health. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically exacerbated this trend for vulnerable workers. Thus, suggestions for mitigating the impact of the current crisis are presented. Our perspective deals with the psychology of sustainability, sustainable development, and the psychology of working theory. In this framework, vocational psychologists could reform and reorganize specific career counselling practices for vulnerable workers, promoting sustainable and decent work and inclusivity. This could be achieved by applying four key points. 1) Enrich career counselling interventions with the processes of self-identity, reflection, and reflexivity on what constitutes actual sustainability for vulnerable workers in terms of professional and personal development. 2) Promote the use of an evidence-based methodology in accordance with the accountability principles for the 21st century. 3) Advocate to enrich available services with positive primary preventive strength-based actions and interventions through timely differentiated career counselling strategies. 4) Encourage applied research and practices to find new ways to balance resources with evidence-based efficacy; for example, by using the power of the audience in group-based life design counselling. The present study investigated the Italian version of the Decent Work Scale (DWS) with a sample of 645 workers (females = 65.1%; mean age = 43.9 years; SD = 10.9) according to a network perspective. We compared factorial and network models and estimated the regularized partial correlations for the five DWS domains: physically and interpersonally safe working conditions (SC), access to healthcare (AH), adequate compensation (AC), hours that allow for free time and rest (FT) and organizational values complement family and social values (CV). The results highlighted that the network model showed the best fit to the data. Among the most central domains in the network, the high centrality of CV suggests that this domain could represent an effective target for actions addressed to fostering decent work in Italy. In contrast, the low centrality of AC and FT underlines the urgent need to advocate for more decent remunerations and working hours in Italy.

Gratitude is a promising resource from a healthy organizational perspective. It is related to many positive outcomes at work. The Gratitude Resentment and Appreciation Test-Revised Short (GRAT-RS) is the most widely used self-report questionnaire to detect gratitude. The present study examined GRAT-RS (the Italian version) by implementing multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) analyses to explore its psychometric properties. The participants were 537 Italian workers. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of the GRAT-RS and MIRT analyses using the Grade Response Model were run. The MIRT discrimination and MIRT difficulty parameters were calculated. A test information function (TIF) and measure of reliability associated with (TIF) scores were also implemented. CFA highlighted that a bifactor model showed the best fit. Hence, MIRT analyses were carried out by implementing a bifactor model. The MIRT bifactor structure showed a good data fit with discrimination parameters ranging from good to excellent and adequate reliability. The good psychometric properties of GRAT-RS were confirmed, highlighting the questionnaire as a reliable tool to measure gratitude in Italian workers.

The Sustainable Development Goals Psychological Inventory (SDGPI) is a recently developed self-report questionnaire that assesses interest, motivation, and self-efficacy associated with each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advanced by the United Nations. This study aims to investigate, via network analysis, (a) the relationships between interest, motivation, and self-efficacy for each SDG and (b) the most central SDGs. To this end, 417 Italian university students (73.9% females and 26.1% males; mean age: 22.20; DS = 3.02) were assessed through the SDGPI, and two network structures were estimated. The first network structure investigates links (edges) between interest, motivation, and self-efficacy in relation to each specific SDG. The second network structure investigates most central SDGs as the sum of interest, motivation, and self-efficacy for each specific SDG. Regarding results, the first network structure showed that five SDGs had strong and statistically significant edges between interest, motivation, and self-efficacy; seven SDGs had strong and statistically significant edges between interest and motivation but not self-efficacy; five SDGs had no statistically significant edges linking the other dimensions. The second network structure revealed that SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) were the most central nodes. Implications for research, tailor-made interventions, and prevention were discussed.

In the contemporary world of work, workers are engaged more frequently in career choices to cope with changing work and working conditions. In this scenario, the well-being of workers is under threat. This study aims to examine the effect of career adaptability as a preventive resource on the relationship between self-esteem and meaning in life. Three-hundred Italian workers (67.3% females, mean age = 41.90; SD = 12.54) completed an online survey enclosing the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale, the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire. Data were analyzed through a path analysis by implementing a mediation model to test the hypothesized relationship. The results show that career adaptability partially mediated the relationship between self-esteem and meaning in life, both considering the presence of meaning and the search for meaning dimensions. The findings expand current knowledge on the relationship between self-esteem, career adaptability and meaning in life in workers with implications for research and intervention.

In a healthy organization’s framework and strength-based prevention perspectives, gratitude represents an important resource. Gratitude is a worthy construct able to promote the well-being of both workers and organizations. Gratitude is also an interesting variable in relation to success, efficiency and productivity in organizations that can be increased through specific training. Gratitude is, therefore, considered a promising resource for both individuals and organizations. This study aims at analyzing the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Gratitude Resentment and Appreciation Test–Revised Short (GRAT–RS). Participants were 359 Italian workers from different public and private organizations. Factor structure, internal consistency, and concurrent validity were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a multidimensional bifactor structure. Good internal consistency and concurrent validity were established. Results indicated that the Italian version of the Gratitude Resentment and Appreciation Test–Revised Short (GRAT–RS) is a valid instrument to detect gratitude in the Italian context with workers.

Objective.The Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (DCPR) are those of psychosomatic syndromes that did not find room in the classical taxonomy. More recently, the DCPR were updated, called DCPR-revised (DCPR-R). The present study was conducted to test the criterion-related validity of the DCPR-R.Methods.Two hundred consecutive subjects were enrolled at the Headache Center of Careggi University Hospital (Italy): 100 subjects had a diagnosis of chronic migraine (CM) and 100 had a diagnosis of episodic migraine (EM). Participants received a clinical assessment, which included the DCPR-revised Semi-Structured Interview (DCPR-R SSI), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5), and the psychosocial index (PSI).Results.Forty-seven subjects (23.5%) had at least one DSM-5 diagnosis: major depressive disorder (8.5%; n = 17) and agoraphobia (7.5%; n = 15) were the most frequent. One hundred and ten subjects (55%) reported a DCPR-R diagnosis: allostatic overload (29%; n = 58) and type A behavior (10.5%; n = 21) were the most frequent. When the incremental validity of the DCPR system over the DSM system was tested using PSI subscales as the criterion variable, the DCPR-R increased up to 0.11–0.24 the amount of explained variance. Subjects with at least one DCPR-R diagnosis showed lower PSI well-being scores (p = .001), higher PSI stress scores (p < .001), and higher PSI psychological distress scores (p = .008) than subjects without a DCPR-R diagnosis.Conclusion. The DCPR-R showed a good criterion-related validity in migraine outpatients. Thus, they might be implemented, together with the DSM-5, in the assessment of migraine subjects.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between the four humor styles (Affiliative, Self-enhancing, Aggressive, and Self-defeating) assessed via the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) and the ten facets of the Big Five Questionnaire (BFQ) through network analysis. Four hundred and sixty-two Italian workers (61.3% women; Mage = 48.59; SD = 10.75) participated in the study and filled out the HSQ and the BFQ. Both centrality indexes (Expected Influence [EI]) and bridge nodes were calculated. In addition, the stability and accuracy of the network were checked. The network analysis revealed that HSQ Self-enhancing (EI = 0.63) showed the highest centrality among the HSQ styles, whereas BFQ Emotion Control (EI = 1.10) showed the highest centrality among BFQ facets; it also revealed that they were positively linked. Furthermore, HSQ Self-defeating emerged as the second-most-central humor style, negatively associated with BFQ Emotion Control. Concerning Bridge dimensions, four nodes were identified: HSQ Aggressive Humor, BFQ Emotion Control, BFQ Dynamism, and BFQ Dominance, with positive links between humor and personality except for Aggressive humor and Emotion Control, which showed negative links. On the basis of these results, the high centrality of HSQ Self-enhancing indicates the possibility of using this node as a starting point to foster positive and adaptive humor styles. The centrality of HSQ Self-defeating suggests that strength-based interventions could be focused to increase adaptive humor styles and to decrease them in order to enhance health-promoting humor styles. Furthermore, the bridge node of the HSQ Aggressive humor style with specific personality facets shows its possible use in intervention to both resize and to adaptively improve relationships between humor and personality.

BackgroundPain has been qualified under four categories: nociception, perception of pain, suffering, and pain behaviors. Most of the literature on migraine has devoted attention to the first two. The aim of the present cohort study was to investigate patients with migraine enrolled at a tertiary care unit to study suffering and mental pain and identify potential risk factors for migraine.MethodsAn observational cross-sectional study was carried out on patients with chronic migraine (CM) and episodic migraine (EM), and healthy subjects (HS). The three groups were matched for age and sex. A comprehensive assessment of migraine disability, pain, psychiatric disorders, psychosomatic syndromes, depressive and anxious symptoms, euthymia, psychosocial variables, mental pain, and pain-proneness (PP) was performed.ResultsThree hundred subjects were enrolled (100 CM, 100 EM, and 100 HS). Based on the multiple regression analyses, those presenting PP (social impairment: odds ratio [OR] = 3.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.14-11.29; depressive symptoms: OR = 3.82, 95% CI = 1.74-8.41) were more likely to be CM than HS. Those with higher levels of PP (social impairment: OR = 4.04, 95% CI = 1.60-10.22; depressive symptoms: OR = 2.02, 95% CI = 1.26-3.24) were more likely to be EM than HS. Those presenting higher levels of mental pain were more likely to be CM than EM (OR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.02-2.07).ConclusionMigraine is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with psychosocial manifestations that might contribute to the level of suffering of the individuals. Mental pain resulted to be the variable that most differentiated patients with CM from EM.

Psychology of working theory (PWT) and psychology of working framework (PWF) offered a psychological view of decent work. The present study examined the associations among personality traits, decent work andOccupational Fatigue Exhaustion Recovery Scale(OFER). Two hundred and thirty four participants filled out theBig Five Questionnaire, the Italian version of theDecent Work Scale, and the Italian version of theOFER Scale. Hierarchical regressions showed that decent work explained incremental variance beyond personality traits with respect to OFER both considering total score and its three dimensions (chronic fatigue, acute fatigue, persistent fatigue). The present study underlined the value of decent work in relation to occupational fatigue beyond the contributions of personality, in particular in relation to the dimensions ofAdequate compensationandFree time and restfor less occupational fatigue (both as total and as dimensions).

In recent years, the decent work agenda has called upon vocational psychologists to advance psychological research and intervention to promote work as a human right. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic is having disproportionate consequences on vulnerable workers, such as unemployment and underemployment, highlighting the need to enhance access to decent work for these workers. As a response, the present perspective article advances job crafting as a promising way to shape decent work for marginalized workers. To this end, the article deals with decent work and job crafting, starting with the definition of decent work according to the psychology of working theory (PWT) and examining the evolution of the construct of job crafting. Subsequently, the literature on job crafting is discussed, focusing on variables related to the PWT model of decent work and their effect on vulnerable workers. Finally, possibilities for further research and intervention aimed at promoting decent work through job crafting are discussed.

Background Problematic social media use (PSMU) has received growing attention in the last fifteen years. Even though PSMU has been extensively studied, its internal structure is not fully understood. We used network analysis to evaluate which symptoms and associations between symptoms are most central to PSMU – as assessed by the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale-2 adapted for PSMU – among undergraduates. Method Network analysis was applied to a large gender-balanced sample of undergraduates (n = 1344 participants; M = 51.9%; mean age = 22.50 ± 2.20 years). Results The most central nodes in the network were the difficulty of controlling one’s own use of social media, the tendency to think obsessively about going online, the difficulties in resisting the urge to use social media and the preference for communicating with people online rather than face-to-face. This last element was strongly associated with a general preference for online social interactions and the feeling of being more comfortable online. The network was robust to stability and accuracy tests. The mean levels of symptoms and symptom centrality were not associated. Conclusions Deficient self-regulation and preference for online communication were the most central symptoms of PSMU, suggesting that these symptoms should be prioritized in theoretical models of PSMU and could also serve as important treatment targets for PSMU interventions.

The Cognitive Distortions Scale is a reliable scale assessing cognitive distortions as defined by Beck and Burns. The present study tested the psychometric properties (i.e., internal consistency, factor structure, homogeneity, concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity) of the Italian version of the CDS in a non-clinical sample. One-hundred subjects, aged between 18 and 64 years, were recruited from the general population of Florence (Italy) and assessed via the Symptom Rating Test, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-form Y), the Anxiety Sensitivity Index 3, the Personal Need for Structure, the White Bear Suppression Inventory, and the Stroop Color and Word Test, Short Version. Internal consistency of the CDS was tested via the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, the factor structure was analyzed via the principal component analysis, homogeneity was tested via the Mokken analysis, concurrent, convergent, discriminant validity was examined via Spearman correlations. The CDS showed a one-factor structure, satisfactory homogeneity for all items (ranging from 0.43 to 0.57) and total score (0.50), excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.96), statistically significant concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity. The Italian version of the CDS showed good psychometric properties, similarly to the original English version.

Background/Aims: We run Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses of the Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Scale (MNWS) and of the MNWS-Revised (MNWS-R). Psychometric properties were also explored. Methods: Adult Italian smokers, 366 in all, were assessed via the MNWS-R together with rating scales measuring cigarette dependence, alcohol use, anxiety sensitivity and negative affect at baseline and after 3 months. Results: The MNWS showed good psychometric properties (α = 0.85; rtt = 0.59) and a unidimensional factor structure. The 2-factor model of MNWS-R had the best fit and the factors were labelled psychological symptoms (α = 0.86; rtt = 0.59) and associated somatic features (α = 0.64; rtt = 0.45). Conclusions: MNWS showed 1 factor; MNWS-R showed 2 relatively dependent factors. The results need to be replicated in smokers in withdrawal.

Background: The Mental Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) is a self-report questionnaire developed to assess mental pain. The aim of the present study was to test the clinimetric properties of the MPQ.Methods: A sample of 200 migraine outpatients were enrolled; homogeneity of MPQ was assessed by Mokken Analysis; item-level severity and item-level sensitivity were calculated via Two-Parameter Logistic model; Total Information Function was evaluated to assess reliability of MPQ; internal consistency was calculated via Cronbach's alpha and Sijtsma and Molenaar rho; sensitivity and specificity were assessed via Receiver Operating Characteristic curves.Results: The MPQ showed unidimensional factor structure; satisfactory homogeneity of the item and total score, except items 4 ("my pain is everywhere") and 6 ("I cannot understand why I feel this pain"); good discrimination, except item 7 ("I feel empty"); low information provided by items 4, 6, 7; good reliability for mild and high levels of mental pain; poor reliability for low levels of mental pain; acceptable internal consistency; acceptable sensitivity and specificity.Limitations: The sample size is barely sufficient to calculate item parameters; it is a monocentric study that enrolled outpatients from a tertiary facility; the study enrolled migraine outpatients not affected by other medical disease.Conclusions: The MPQ showed good psychometric properties. Items 4, 6, 7 should be considered with caution when migraine patients are evaluated. A score of at least 3 indicates mental pain clinically relevant, a score of at least 2 indicates distress. These data are preliminary and refer to migraine patients, results might be different in psychiatric populations.

Introduction The Fagerstrom Test for Cigarette Dependence (FTCD) and the Heaviness of Smoking Index (HSI) are the gold standard measures to assess cigarette dependence. However, FTCD reliability and factor structure have been questioned and HSI psychometric properties are in need of further investigations. The present study examined the psychometrics properties of the FTCD and the HSI via the Item Response Theory. Methods The study was a secondary analysis of data collected in 862 Italian daily smokers. Confirmatory factor analysis was run to evaluate the dimensionality of FTCD. A Grade Response Model was applied to FTCD and HSI to verify the fit to the data. Both item and test functioning were analyzed and item statistics, Test Information Function, and scale reliabilities were calculated. Mokken Scale Analysis was applied to estimate homogeneity and Loevinger's coefficients were calculated. Results The FTCD showed unidimensionality and homogeneity for most of the items and for the total score. It also showed high sensitivity and good reliability from medium to high levels of cigarette dependence, although problems related to some items (i.e., items 3 and 5) were evident. HSI had good homogeneity, adequate item functioning, and high reliability from medium to high levels of cigarette dependence. Significant Differential Item Functioning was found for items 1, 4, 5 of the FTCD and for both items of HSI. Conclusions HSI seems highly recommended in clinical settings addressed to heavy smokers while FTCD would be better used in smokers with a level of cigarette dependence ranging between low and high.

The Smoking Abstinence Expectancies Questionnaire is a quick and reliable scale assessing the expected consequences of short-term nicotine abstinence. The present study sought to translate the Smoking Abstinence Expectancies Questionnaire to Italian and assess its psychometric properties. A sample of 366 daily smokers (59.3% female; mean (±standard deviation) age = 34.0 ± 11.2 years; mean (±standard deviation) cigarettes smoked per day = 13.2 ± 7.5; mean (±standard deviation) years of smoking = 11.3 ± 9.2 years) completed the Smoking Abstinence Expectancies Questionnaire and a series of rating scales measuring nicotine dependence, alcohol use, anxiety, and depressive symptoms at baseline and after 3 months (retest). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The authors evaluated the factor structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent, and discriminant validity. Factor analysis identified a 3-factor solution and confirmatory factor analysis suggested a 3-factor model best fits the data. The Italian version of the Smoking Abstinence Expectancies Questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency and good test-retest reliability. There also was evidence of convergent validity and discriminant validity. The Italian version of the Smoking Abstinence Expectancies Questionnaire showed good psychometric properties although the factor structure differs slightly from the English-language version of the scale (i.e., 3 versus 4 factor model).
