1. Non-invasive assessment of acute heart failure by Stevenson classification: Does echocardiographic examination recognize different phenotypes?

Abstract

BackgroundAcute heart failure (AHF) presentation is universally classified in relation to the presence or absence of congestion and the peripheral perfusion condition according to the Stevenson diagram. We sought to evaluate a relationship existing between clinical assessment and echocardiographic evaluation in patients with AHF.Materials and methodsThis is a retrospective blinded multicenter analysis assessing both clinical and echocardiographic analyses during the early hospital admission for AHF. Patients were categorized into four groups according to the Stevenson presentation: group A (warm and dry), group B (cold and dry), group C (warm and wet), and group D (cold and wet). Echocardiographic evaluation was executed within 12 h from the first clinical evaluation. The following parameters were measured: left ventricular (LV) volumes, LV ejection fraction (LVEF); pattern Doppler by E/e1 ratio, pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), and inferior cave vein diameter (ICV).ResultsWe studied 208 patients, 10 in group A, 16 in group B, 153 in group C, and 29 in group D. Median age of our sample was 81 [69–86] years and the patients enrolled were mainly men (66.8%). Patients in groups C and A showed significant higher levels of systolic arterial pressures with respect to groups B and D (respectively, 130 [115–145] mmHg vs. 122 [119–130] mmHg vs. 92 [90–100] mmHg vs. 95 [90–100] mmHg, p < 0.001). Patients in groups A and C (warm) demonstrated significant higher values of LVEF with respect to patients in groups B and D (43 [34–49] vs. 42 [30–49] vs. 27 [15–31] vs. 30 [22–42]%, p < 0.001). Whereas group B experienced significant lower TAPSE values compared with other group (14 [12–17] mm vs. A: 17 [16–21] mm vs. C: 18 [14–20] mm vs. D: 16 [12–17] mm; p = 0.02). Finally, echocardiographic congestion score including PASP ≥ 40 mmHg, ICV ≥ 21, mm and E/e’ > 14 did not differ among groups. Follow-up analysis showed an increased mortality rate in D group (HR 8.2 p < 0.04).ConclusionThe early Stevenson classification remains a simple and universally recognized approach for the detection of congestion and perfusion status. The combined clinical and echocardiographic assessment may be useful to better define the patients’ profile.

Abstract

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is usually performed with biventricular pacing (BiVP), but recently, conduction system pacing (CSP) has been proposed as an alternative in case of BiVP failure. The aim of this study is to define an algorithm to choose between BiVP and CSP resynchronization using the interventricular conduction delays (IVCD) as a guide. Methods: Consecutive patients from January 2018 to December 2020 with an indication for CRT were prospectively enrolled in the study group (delays-guided resynchronization group, DRG). A treatment algorithm based on IVCD was used to decide whether to leave the left ventricular (LV) lead to perform BiVP or pull it out and perform CSP. Outcomes from the DRG group were compared to a historical cohort of CRT patients who underwent CRT procedures between January 2016 and December 2017 (resynchronization standard guide group, SRG). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular mortality, heart failure (HF) hospitalization, or HF event at 1 year after the date of intervention. Results: The study population consisted of 292 patients, of which 160 (54.8%) were in the DRG and 132 (45.2%) in the SRG. In the DRG, 41 of 160 patients underwent CSP based on the treatment algorithm (25.6%). The primary endpoint was significantly higher in the SRG (48/132, 36.4%) compared to the DRG (35/160, 21.8%) (hazard ratio (HR): 1.72; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12–2.65; p = 0.013). Conclusions: A treatment algorithm based on IVCD shifted one patient out of every four from BiVP to CSP, with consequent reduction in the primary endpoint after implantation. Therefore, its application could be useful to determine whether to perform BiVP or CSP.

Abstract

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a compound semiconductor, which is considered as a possible alternative to silicon for particles and photons detection. Its characteristics make it very promising for the next generation of nuclear and particle physics experiments at high beam luminosity. Silicon Carbide detectors for Intense Luminosity Investigations and Applications (SiCILIA) is a project starting as a collaboration between the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and IMM-CNR, aiming at the realization of innovative detection systems based on SiC. In this paper, we discuss the main features of silicon carbide as a material and its potential application in the field of particles and photons detectors, the project structure and the strategies used for the prototype realization, and the first results concerning prototype production and their performance.

CSP was performed as His Bundle pacing or Left bundle branch pacing(1). However, further evidence is needed to determine when CSP should be used in lieu of BiVP to improve clinical benefit. Purpose To assess the clinical benefit of a treatment algorithm based on interventricular conduction delays (IVCD) to choose between BiVP or CSP in candidates to CRT(figure1). Methods Consecutive patients presenting at our Institution from January 2018 to December 2020 with an indication to CRT were prospectively enrolled in the study group (delays-guided resynchronization group, DRG). Treatment algorithm based on IVCD was used to decide whether to leave LV lead to perform BiVP or pull it out and perform CSP. Outcomes from the DRG group were compared to a historical cohort of CRT patients (resynchronization standard guide group,SRG). The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular mortality, heart failure (HF) hospitalization, or HF event at 1 year after the date of intervention. Results Study population consisted in 292 patients, of which 160 (54.8%) in the DRG and 132 (45.2%) in the SRG. In the DRG 41 of 160 patients underwent CSP based on treatment algorithm (25.6%). Abstract

Background Heart failure (HF) is a global health burden which prognostic assessment is currently challenging. Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has gained increasing importance for the diagnostic and prognostic assessment of HF. Left atrial (LA) strain by STE is widely recognized as an index of diastolic function and left ventricular (LV) filling pressures and fibrosis. Moreover, many studies have investigated its prognostic value in HF with reduced, mildly reduced and preserved ejection fraction (HFrEF, HFmrEF and HFpEF). Objective our aim was to systematically investigate the prognostic value of peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) for cardiovascular (CV) events in HF and its variation in acute/chronic HF and according to LV function, age and gender. Methods A systematic literature search of medical databases including Pubmed, Scopus, Ovid Online, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register, Scopus was performed using PRISMA principles. All relevant studies in English language reporting the predictive value of LA strain for mortality and/or CV events (CV death, hospitalization for HF, cardiac transplant, ventricular assist device implantat) in HFrEF, HFmrEF and HFpEF, with follow up>6 months were identified. All-cause mortality and HF hospitalizations were considered as primary endpoint. Hazard ratios (HR) were performed using a random effect model reporting on the association of global PALS and outcome and described as pooled estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results Eight studies (5767 patients, median [IQR] age=66.3 [65;68.6], 37% female) satisfied the inclusion criteria (5 studies chronic HF, 2 studies acute HF, 1 study in acute and chronic HF). Overall, 6 studies included patients with HFrEF, 3 studies patients with HFmrEF and 5 patients with HFpEF. Median global PALS value was 17.6 [14.9;26.8]%, median LVEF was 36 [30;56]% and median LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) was -9 [-7;-16.9]%. Over a median follow up of 903 [321;1062] months, 2688 patients reached the primary endpoint (944 all-cause mortality, 1963 HF hospitalization). Each unit decrease in Global PALS was independently associated with a 5% increase for the primary endpoint (meta-analytic HR 1.05; 95% CI [1.02-1.07]; p Conclusions Global PALS may be used as a useful prognostic tool in HF, both in acute and chronic setting and especially in patients with HFrEF, providing an additional independent value for risk stratification of these patients in clinical practice. Abstract

The prevalence of cardiac amyloidosis has progressively increased over the last years, being recognized as a significant cause of heart failure. In fact, the management of advanced heart failure is a cornerstone treatment of amyloid cardiomyopathy due to the frequent delay in its diagnosis. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have been gaining importance in the scenario of end-stage heart failure, representing an alternative to heart transplant. However, only few studies have investigated the role of LVAD in restrictive cardiomyopathies such as cardiac amyloidosis, since there are several problems to consider. In fact, both anatomical factors and the restrictive physiology of this condition make LVAD implant a relevant challenge in this subset of patients. Furthermore, due to the systemic involvement of amyloidosis, several factors have to be considered after LVAD implant, such as an increased risk of bleeding and right ventricular failure. This review attempts to summarize the current evidence of LVAD in cardiac amyloidosis, especially focusing on the challenges that this cardiomyopathy imposes both to the implant and to its management thereafter.

8. Prediction of congestive state in acute and chronic heart failure: The association between NT-proBNP and left atrial strain and its prognostic value

Abstract

The relief of congestion is crucial to improve heart failure (HF) patient's quality of life and prognosis. N-terminal-pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a well-known marker of congestion, although with limited specificity. Peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is an index of intracardiac pressure and HF prognosis. We aimed to determine the association between NT-proBNP and PALS and its prognostic implications in patients with HF.Patients hospitalized for de-novo or recurrent HF and outpatients with chronic HF were included in this retrospective study. Patients with missing data, previous cardiac surgery, non-feasible STE were excluded. Clinical, laboratory and echocardiographic data were collected. STE was performed on echocardiographic records. Primary endpoint was a combination of all-cause death and HF hospitalization.Overall, 388 patients were included (172 acute HF, 216 chronic HF, mean age = 65 ± 12 years, 37% female). Mean LV ejection fraction = 31 ± 9%. Global PALS showed a significant inverse correlation with NT-proBNP in acute and chronic HF (all p 0.001). During a median follow-up of 4 years, 180 patients reached the combined endpoint. NT-proBNP (AUC = 0.87) and global PALS (AUC = 0.82) were good predictors of the combined endpoint. Global PALS was the only independent predictor of the combined endpoint. Optimal risk stratification for the composite endpoint was provided combining PALS ≤15% and NTproBNP ≥874.5 ng/l.Global PALS is associated with NT-proBNP in acute and chronic HF and may be used as additional index of congestion to optimize therapeutic management. The combination of global PALS and NT-proBNP could enhance the prognostic stratification of HF.

Abstract

Thanks to the advances in medical therapy and assist devices, the management of patients hospitalized in cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) is becoming increasingly challenging. In fact, Patients in the cardiac intensive care unit are frequently characterized by dynamic and variable diseases, which may evolve into several clinical phenotypes based on underlying etiology and its complexity. Therefore, the use of noninvasive tools in order to provide a personalized approach to these patients, according to their phenotype, may help to optimize the therapeutic strategies towards the underlying etiology. Echocardiography is the most reliable and feasible bedside method to assess cardiac function repeatedly, assisting clinicians not only in characterizing hemodynamic disorders, but also in helping to guide interventions and monitor response to therapies. Beyond basic echocardiographic parameters, its application has been expanded with the introduction of new tools such as lung ultrasound (LUS), the Venous Excess UltraSound (VexUS) grading system, and the assessment of pulmonary hypertension, which is fundamental to guide oxygen therapy. The aim of this review is to provide an overview on the current knowledge about the pathophysiology and echocardiographic evaluation of perfusion and congestion in patients in CICU, and to provide practical indications for the use of echocardiography across clinical phenotypes and new applications in CICU.

10. 563 Different right ventricle maladaptation in patients with HFrEF and HFpEF: diagnostic and prognostic implications

Abstract

Aims The prognostic impact of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients affected by heart failure (HF) is well known. More recently it has been demonstrated that the coupling between the afterload and the function of the right ventricle in terms of TAPSE/PAPS ratio, may provide additional prognostic information. In contrast, sparse and conflicting data have been published regarding the relevance of different echocardiographic features in patients with reduced or preserved ejection fraction. Additionally, RV function and ventricular-arterial coupling is poorly studied in acute setting. We planned a prospective monocentric study aimed at elucidating the role of PH and of RV structure and function, assessed by means of an echocardiographic examination in the early phase of hospital admission of patients with ADHF. We also compared different echo parameters in order to assess the prognostic role in patient affected by HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) vs. those with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Methods and results we included 381 patients included in the study, 209 had HFrEF and 172 had HFpEF. All the examinations were performed by cardiologists according to the instructions provided by the American Society of Echocardiography. In all patients LV volumes and diastolic function analysis were performed. A detailed examination of RV dimension and function were achieved by the measurement of right ventricular diameter at basal level, Pulmonary systolic pressure (PAPS), Tricuspid anular peak systolic excursion (TAPSE) and s wave by TDI analysis at RV free wall basal level. Finally longitudinal function was measured at lateral RV wall by post processing strain analysis. Overall, the median TAPSE was 19 (16–21) mm, the median of RVEDD was 40 (36–45) mm, the median PASP was 45 (35–50) mmHg and the median s’ wave was 11 (7–14). Patients with HFrEF demonstrated a larger RVEDD compared to HFpEF (44 ± 6 vs. 38 ± 5 P 38 mm [HR: 1.88 (1.36–2.61); P 21 mm [HR: 1.90 (1.31–2.75); P = 0.001]. Therefore TAPSE/PAPS was associated with adverse event in HFrEF but not in HFpEF (HR: 1.75 and HR: 1.02). Whereas, s/PAPS was associated with more increased risk in HFpEF (HR: 1.8 and HR: 1.3). Conclusions Right ventricular dysfunction and maladaptation are associated with poor outcome in either HFrEF and HFpEF. However tissue excursion and longitudinal strain are much more impaired in HFpEF, whereas RV dilatation and reduced longitudinal function are closely related to HFrEF. Different prognostic values and evaluation may be comprised during the evaluation of HFrEF and HFpEF.

11. Effects of Metolazone Administration on Congestion, Diuretic Response and Renal Function in Patients with Advanced Heart Failure

Abstract

Background: Advanced heart failure (HF) is a condition often requiring elevated doses of loop diuretics. Therefore, these patients often experience poor diuretic response. Both conditions have a detrimental impact on prognosis and hospitalization. Aims: This retrospective, multicenter study evaluates the effect of the addition of oral metolazone on diuretic response (DR), clinical congestion, NTproBNP values, and renal function over hospitalization phase. Follow-up analysis for a 6-month follow-up period was performed. Methods: We enrolled 132 patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) in advanced NYHA class with reduced ejection fraction (EF &lt, 40%) taking a mean furosemide amount of 250 ± 120 mg/day. Sixty-five patients received traditional loop diuretic treatment plus metolazone (Group M). The mean dose ranged from 7.5 to 15 mg for one week. Sixty-seven patients continued the furosemide (Group F). Congestion score was evaluated according to the ESC recommendations. DR was assessed by the formula diuresis/40 mg of furosemide. Results: Patients in Group M and patients in Group F showed a similar prevalence of baseline clinical congestion (3.1 ± 0.7 in Group F vs. 3 ± 0.8 in Group M) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) (51% in Group M vs. 57% in Group F, p = 0.38). Patients in Group M experienced a better congestion score at discharge compared to patients in Group F (C score: 1 ± 1 in Group M vs. 3 ± 1 in Group F p &gt, 0.05). Clinical congestion resolution was also associated with weight reduction (−6 ± 2 in Group M vs. −3 ± 1 kg in Group F, p &lt, 0.05). Better DR response was observed in Group M compared to F (940 ± 149 mL/40 mgFUROSEMIDE/die vs. 541 ± 314 mL/40 mgFUROSEMIDE/die, p &lt, 0.01), whereas median ΔNTproBNP remained similar between the two groups (−4819 ± 8718 in Group M vs. −3954 ± 5560 pg/mL in Group F NS). These data were associated with better daily diuresis during hospitalization in Group M (2820 ± 900 vs. 2050 ± 1120 mL p &lt, 0.05). No differences were found in terms of WRF development and electrolyte unbalance at discharge, although Group M had a significant saline solution administration during hospitalization. Follow-up analysis did not differ between the group but a reduced trend for recurrent hospitalization was observed in the M group (26% vs. 38%). Conclusions: Metolazone administration could be helpful in patients taking an elevated loop diuretics dose. Use of thiazide therapy is associated with better decongestion and DR. Current findings could suggest positive insights due to the reduced amount of loop diuretics in patients with advanced HF.

Abstract

In this paper the technological aspects of the FAZIA array will be explored. After a productive commissioning phase, FAZIA blocks started to measure and give very useful data to explore the physics of Fermi energy heavy-ion reactions. This was possible thanks to many technical measures and innovations developed in the commissioning phase and tuned during the first experimental campaigns. This paper gives a detailed description of the present status of the FAZIA setup from the electronic and mechanical point of view, trying also to trace a path for new improvements and refinements of the apparatus., 17 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

International audience; The neutron-proton (n-p) equilibration process in Ca48+Ca40 at 35 MeV/nucleon bombarding energy is experimentally estimated by means of the isospin transport ratio. Experimental data are collected with a subset of the FAZIA telescope array, which permits us to determine the Z and N of detected fragments. For the first time, the quasiprojectile (QP) evaporative channel is compared with the QP breakup one in a homogeneous and consistent way, pointing to comparable n-p equilibration, which suggests a close interaction time between projectile and target independently of the exit channel. Moreover, in the QP evaporative channel n-p equilibration is compared with the prediction of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model coupled with the Gemini statistical model as an afterburner, showing a higher probability of proton and neutron transfers in the simulation with respect to the experimental data.

Abstract

Experimental results concerning the dynamical fission of quasiprojectiles in semiperipheral collisions for the system Kr80+Ca48 at 35 MeV/nucleon are presented. Data have been collected with four blocks of the FAZIA setup in the first physics experiment of the FAZIA Collaboration. The degree of isospin equilibration between the two fission fragments and its dependence on their charge asymmetry is investigated. The data are compared with the results of the AMD model coupled to GEMINI as an afterburner, in order to get hints about the timescale of the process.

Abstract

The FAZIA apparatus is a new detector designed for the Fermi energy domain for charged particles based on three stages telescopes: Silicon detector (300 μm thick), Silicon detector (500 μm thick) and CsI(Tl) (10 cm). Using the ΔE-E technique and the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) it permits the charge and mass discrimination up to more than Z=20. In the following, some details about the FAZIA detectors and electronics, their performance and the frst experimental campaigns already performed will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The proton energy calibration and the corresponding identification efficiency of the Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the Fazia detection system have been studied in the range of 59–180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. The light output versus energy is linear in the lower portion of the investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity on the higher energy side. The effects of proton induced nuclear collisions have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. Experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is deduced and compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a well collimated crystal, and at the highest considered energy, the efficiency value comes out to be about 70%.

Abstract

Proton energy calibration and identification efficiency of few Thallium activated Cesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)) crystals of the FAZIA detection system, have been studied in the range 59-180 MeV by using the proton beam delivered by the cyclotron of the CCB (Cyclotron Center Bronowice) facility. We observe that the light output versus energy is linear in the lower investigated energy range while showing a deviation from linearity above 140 MeV. The effects of proton induced nuclear reactions and multiple scattering causing incomplete energy deposition (IED) events have been identified and estimated via Pulse Shape Analysis in CsI(Tl) crystals. The measured experimental efficiency for proton identification in the examined energy range is then compared with GEANT4 simulations. For a centered collimated irradiation on the crystal, and at the highest measured energy, the resulting experimental efficiency value is about 70%.

Abstract

Experimental data concerning binary events in peripheral collisions for the systems 93Nb+93Nb and 93Nb+116Sn at 38 MeV/nucleon, collected with the Fiasco setup, are compared with calculations performed with the dynamic code AMD, coupled with the statistical code Gemini used as an afterburner. The comparison focuses on the properties of the quasiprojectile (QP) and on the total multiplicities of the emitted light charged particles. A good reproduction of the average mass ratio, charge Z and c.m. angle of the QP is obtained in the examined impact parameter range (b~7-12 fm). Concerning the light charged particles, a general agreement is found for the total emitted charge, while some discrepancy remains for the multiplicities of the various species, especially for the protons which are always overestimated by the calculations.

Abstract

A new modular and high versatility hodoscope , OSCAR, has been developed and characterized. The aim of this hodoscope is to work as an ancillary detector of present large acceptance heavy ion detectors in specific angular regions where low thresholds and high granularities are needed. We discuss the capabilities of OSCAR in the Δ E–E identification of very low energy light particles, providing a precise map of the thickness uniformity of the Δ E (SSSSD, 20 μ m ) stage and showing how the thickness gradient affects the identification of particles. Energy spectra of light identified particles produced in Ca+Ca collisions at 35 AMeV are used to investigate isospin transport phenomena involving the emission of low energy particles from the quasi-target (QT) source in semi-peripheral nuclear collisions. The possibility to explore particle–particle correlations are also discussed.

Abstract

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a compound semiconductor, which is considered as a possible alternative to silicon for particles and photons detection. Its characteristics make it very promising for the next generation of nuclear and particle physics experiments at high beam luminosity. Silicon Carbide detectors for Intense Luminosity Investigations and Applications (SiCILIA) is a project starting as a collaboration between the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and IMM-CNR, aiming at the realization of innovative detection systems based on SiC. In this paper, we discuss the main features of silicon carbide as a material and its potential application in the field of particles and photons detectors, the project structure and the strategies used for the prototype realization, and the first results concerning prototype production and their performance.

Abstract

International audience; The FAZIA apparatus exploits Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) to identify nuclear fragments stopped in the first layer of a Silicon-Silicon-CsI(Tl) detector telescope. In this work, for the first time, we show that the isotopes of fragments having atomic number as high as Z∼20 can be identified. Such a remarkable result has been obtained thanks to a careful construction of the Si detectors and to the use of low noise and high performance digitizing electronics. Moreover, optimized PSA algorithms are needed. This work deals with the choice of the best algorithm for PSA of current signals. A smoothing spline algorithm is demonstrated to give optimal results without requiring too much computational resources.

Abstract

The simulation of heavy ion collisions in the Fermi energy region is a challenge for the theoretical models; in particular it is difficult to obtain a coherent description in all the impact parameter range and to reproduce all the experimental observables. In this contribution we will show the very good job done by the dynamical model AMD [1] followed by the statistical code GEMINI [2, 3] as an afterburner. The model is able to reproduce the main characteristics of peripheral and semiperipheral collisions, although some discrepancies still persist.

Abstract

The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes, developed within the FAZIA collaboration, to fragments produced in nuclear reactions 84 Krþ 120-124 Sn at 35 A MeV, has been used to study ion identification methods. Two techniques are considered for the identification of the nuclear products in the silicon stages. The standard DEE one requires signals induced in two detection layers by ions punching through the first one. Conversely, the digital Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) allows the identification of ions stopped in the first silicon layer. The capabilities of these two identification methods have been compared for different mountings of the silicons, i.e. rear (particles entering through the low electric field side) or front (particles entering through the high electric field side) side injection. The DEE identification method gives exactly the same results in both configurations. At variance, the pulse shape discrimination is very sensitive to the detector mounting. In case of rear side injection, the identification with the ''energy vs. charge rise time'' PSA method presents energy thresholds which are significantly lower than in the case of front side injection. & 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Species rarefaction curves have long been used for estimating the expected number of species as a function of sampling effort. Nonetheless, sampling species based on standard plant inventories represents a cost expensive approach. In this view, remotely sensed information may be straightforwardly used for predicting species rich sites on the strength of the Spectral Variation Hypothesis which predicts that sites with a higher spectral (environmental) variability will show a higher species diversity. In this paper we present spectral rarefaction, i.e. the rarefaction of reflectance values derived from satellite imagery, as an effective tool for predicting bio-diverse sites.

Abstract

International audience; In recent years, many efforts have been devoted to the investigation of the isospin degree of freedom in nuclear reactions. Comparing systems involving partners with different N/Z, it has been possible to investigate the isospin transport process and its influence on the final products population. This can be then related to the symmetry energy term of the nuclear EOS. From the experimental point of view, this task requires detectors able to measure both charge and mass of the emitted products, in the widest possible range of energy and size of the fragments. With this objective, the FAZIA and GARFIELD+RCo apparatus have been used with success in some recent experiments.

Abstract

A study of the identification properties and of the energy response of a Si-Si-CsI(Tl) $\Delta$ E-E telescope exploiting a partially depleted second Si stage has been performed. Five different bias voltages have been applied to the second stage of the telescope, one corresponding to full depletion, the others associated with a depleted layer ranging from 60% to 90% of the detector thickness. Fragment identification has been obtained using either the $\Delta$E-E technique or the Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). Charge collection efficiency has been evaluated. The $\Delta$ E-E performance is not affected by incomplete depletion. Isotopic separation capability improves at lower bias voltages with respect to full depletion, though charge identification thresholds increase.

Abstract

A new technique of large-area thin ion implanted silicon detectors has been developed within the R&D performed by the FAZIA Collaboration. The essence of the technique is the application of a low-temperature baking process instead of high-temperature annealing. This thermal treatment is performed after B+ ion implantation and Al evaporation of detector contacts, made by using a single adjusted Al mask. Extremely thin silicon pads can be therefore obtained. The thickness distribution along the X and Y directions was measured for a prototype chip by the energy loss of α-particles from 241Am (〈E α 〉 = 5.5 MeV). Preliminary tests on the first thin detector (area ≈ 20 × 20 mm2) were performed at the INFN-LNS cyclotron in Catania (Italy) using products emitted in the heavy-ion reaction 84Kr (E = 35 A MeV) + 112Sn. The ΔE − E ion identification plot was obtained using a telescope consisting of our thin ΔE detector (21 μm thick) followed by a typical FAZIA 510 μm E detector of the same active area. The charge distribution of measured ions is presented together with a quantitative evaluation of the quality of the Z resolution. The threshold is lower than 2 A MeV depending on the ion charge.

Abstract

The Fiasco multidetector is a low-threshold apparatus, optimized for the investigation of peripheral to semi-central collisions in heavy ion reactions at Fermi energies. It consists of three types of detectors. The first detector layer is a shell of 24 position-sensitive Parallel Plate Avalanche Detectors (PPADs), covering about 70% of the forward hemisphere, which measure the velocity vectors of the heavy ðZ\10Þ reaction products. Below and around the grazing angle, behind the most forward PPADs, there are 96 DE–E silicon telescopes (with thickness of 200 and 500 mm; respectively); they are mainly used to measure the energy of the projectile-like fragment and to identify its charge and, via the time-of-flight of the PPADs, also its mass. Finally, behind most of the PPADs there are 158 (or 182, depending on the configuration) scintillation detectors, mostly of the phoswich type, which cover 25–30% of the forward hemisphere; they identify both light charged particles ðZ ¼ 1; 2Þ and intermediate mass fragments ð3pZt20Þ; measuring also their time-of-flight. r 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The design and implementation of linear electronics based on small-size, low-power charge preamplifiers and shaping amplifiers, used in connection with Si-detector telescopes employed in heavy ion experiments, are presented. Bench tests and “under beam” performances are discussed. In particular, the energy calibration and the linearity test of the overall system (Si-detector and linear and digital conversion electronics) has been performed with a procedure which avoids the pulse height defect problems connected with the detection of heavy ions. The procedure, basically, consists of using bursts of MeV protons, releasing up to GeV energies inside the detector, with low ionization density.

Abstract

An electrostatic chopper has been installed at the KN 3000 accelerator in Florence to obtain short beam pulses with a number of particles per pulse whose average value can be chosen by varying the current intensity at the deflector plates input. Beam pulses can be obtained containing an average number of particles per pulse from less than one to thousands. The transmitted beam pulses can be as short as 200 ps FWHM, at a repetition rate up to about 100 kHz. Among the many applications of the facility, the direct measurement of energy loss and straggling of protons in Kapton and aluminium is reported. In this measurement, the facility has been tuned for transmission of mainly single-proton pulses; the beam energy is directly measured downstream with a good energy-resolution detector, without and with absorbers in front. In general, measurements of this kind can be directed both to study the basic processes of charged particles interactions in materials, or more practically to obtain the effective values of energy parameters useful in many IBA applications, avoiding the need to rely on simulations or theoretical estimates. Also briefly described is an application to Si-detector testing. In this case, the facility has been tuned for transmission of pulses containing many hundreds of protons of energy E p =2.5 MeV and the detector is directly exposed to the pulses. Spectra containing equally spaced peaks at energies multiple of E p are obtained and the response linearity of the detector plus electronics system can thus be checked.

Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

The odd-even staggering of the yield of final reaction products has been studied as a function of proton (Z) and neutron (N ) numbers for the collisions 84 Kr + 112 Sn and 84 Kr + 124 Sn at 35 MeV/nucleon in a wide range of elements (up to Z ≈ 20). The experimental data show that staggering effects rapidly decrease with increasing size of the fragments. Moreover the staggering in N is definitely larger than the one in Z. Similar general features are qualitatively reproduced by the GEMINI code. Concerning the comparison of the two systems, the staggering in N is in general rather similar, being slightly larger only for the lightest fragments produced in the n-rich system. In contrast the staggering in Z, although smaller than that in N , is sizably larger for the n-poor system with respect to the n-rich one.

The pulse height defect in ion-implanted silicon detectors for elastically scattered 93 Nb, 100 Mo, 116 Sn, 120 Sn and 129 Xe ions, at energies ranging from about 4 to 25 A MeV has been measured. The results are compared with two widely used parametrizations taken from the literature.

Abstract

The european Fazia collaboration aims at building a new modular array for charged product identification to be employed for heavy-ion studies. The elementary module of the array is a Silicon-Silicon-CsI telescope, optimized for ion identification also via pulse shape analysis. The achievement of top performances imposes specific electronics which has been developed by FAZIA and features high quality charge and current preamplifiers, coupled to fully digital front-end. During the initial R&D phase, original and novel solutions have been tested in prototypes, obtaining unprecedented ion identification capabilities. FAZIA is now constructing a demonstrator array consisting of about two hundreds telescopes arranged in a compact and transportable configuration. In this contribution, we mainly summarize some aspects studied by FAZIA to improve the ion identification. Then we will briefly discuss the FAZIA program centered on experiments to be done with the demonstrator. Abstract

Isospin transport phenomena in dissipative heavy ion collisions have been investigated at Fermi energies with a beam of 84Kr at 35AMeV. A comparison of the /Z of light and medium products forward-emitted in the centre of mass frame when the beam impinges on a n-poor 112Sn and a n-rich 124Sn targets is presented. Data were collected by means of a three-layer telescope with very good performances in terms of mass identification (full isotopic resolution up to Z about 20 for ions punching through the first detector layer) built by the FAZIA Collaboration and located just beyond the grazing angle for both reactions. The /Z of the decay products emitted when the n-rich target is used is always higher than that associated to the n-poor one. Since the detector was able to measure only fragments coming from the QuasiProjectile decay and/or neck emission, the observed behaviour can be ascribed to the isospin diffusion, driven by the isospin gradient between QuasiProjectile and QuasiTarget. Moreover, for light fragments the /Z as a function of the lab velocity of the fragment increases when we move from the QuasiProjectile velocity to the centre of mass (neck zone). Abstract

The next generation of 4π4π detector arrays for heavy ion studies will largely use Pulse Shape Analysis to push the performance of silicon detectors with respect to ion identification. Energy resolution and pulse shape identification capabilities of silicon detectors under prolonged irradiation by energetic heavy ions have thus become a major issue. In this framework, we have studied the effects of irradiation by energetic heavy ions on the response of neutron transmutation doped (nTD) silicon detectors. Sizeable effects on the amplitude and the risetime of the charge signal have been found for detectors irradiated with large fluences of stopped heavy ions, while much weaker effects were observed by punching-through ions. The robustness of ion identification based on digital pulse shape techniques has been evaluated.

Abstract

The kinetic energy of Au ions at 11.5 A MeV fully stopped in thick ion-implanted silicon detectors has been measured. The energy deposit presents features (peak broadening and splitting) which depend on the orientation of the impinging particle with respect to the silicon crystal axes and can be attributed to partial channeling. Abstract

High spin states up toJ=14 and excitation energy up toE *=3076 keV have been observed in the odd-odd nucleus100Tc with the reaction96Zr(7Li, 3n), at bombarding energies between 21 and 31 MeV, by in-beam γ spectroscopy and conversion-electron measurements. A ΔJ=1 negative parity band similar to that observed in theN=57 isotone102Rh, and based on the 8−, 708 keV state has been identified. The observed band can be interpreted in terms of collective core excitations based on a two-quasiparticle state of(πg9/2 ⊗ νh11/2) configuration. Comparison with IBFM-2 calculations have been performed.

Abstract

Events with 2, 3 and 4 heavy fragments (A≥20) detected in the reactions100Mo +100Mo at 18.7, 23.7 A·MeV and120Sn +120Sn at 18.4 A·MeV were analyzed by means of an improved version of the kinematic coincidence method. The phase-space distributions prove that 3- (and possibly 4-) body events predominantly originate from a two-step mechanism and are compatible with the hypothesis of a binary deep-inelastic interaction followed by the further fissionlike decay of one (or both) of the primary fragments. The characteristics of the fission step — mass asymmetry, relative velocity, in-plane and out-of-plane angles — have been reconstructed for the 3-body events and indications are found that nonequilibrium effects at the end of the deep-inelastic phase may influence the fissionlike decay.

Abstract

Odd-even staggering effects on charge distributions are investigated for fragments produced in semiperipheral and central collisions of ${}^{112}\text{Sn}+{}^{58}\text{Ni}$ at 35 MeV/nucleon. For fragments with $Z\ensuremath{\le}16$ one observes a clear overproduction of even charges, which decreases for heavier fragments. Staggering persists up to $Z\ensuremath{\sim}30$. The staggering appears to be substantially independent of the centrality of the collisions, suggesting that it is mainly related to the last few steps in the decay of hot nuclei.

Abstract

A ΔE-E telescope exploiting a single silicon chip for both ΔE measurement and scintillation light collection has been tested. It is a Si-CsI(Tl) telescope tailored for mass identification of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. A procedure based on two different shaping filters allows for extraction of the ΔE-E information from the single silicon signal. The quality of the obtained fragment identification is expressed in terms of a figure of merit and compared to that of a standard ΔE-E telescope. The presented configuration could be a good candidate for the basic cell of a large solid angle array of ΔE-E telescopes, given the reduction in complexity and cost of the front-end electronics.

Abstract

The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(TI) and silicon-CsI(TI) telescopes to fragments produced in nuclear interactions has been studied. The telescopes were developed within the FAZIA collaboration. The capabilities of two methods are compared: (a) the standard Delta E-E technique and (b) the digital Pulse Shape Analysis technique (for identification of nuclear fragments stopped in a single Si-layer). In a test setup, nuclear fragments covering a large range in nuclear charge, mass and energy were detected. They were produced in nuclear reactions induced by a 35A MeV beam of Xe-129 impinging on various targets. It was found that the Delta E-E correlations allow the identification of all isotopes up to Z similar to 25. With the digital Pulse Shape Analysis it is possible to fully distinguish the charge of stopped nuclei up to the maximum available Z (slightly over that of the beam, Z=54).

Abstract

The characteristics of the fission step following a binary deep-inelastic interaction have been reconstructed for three-body events detected in the reaction [sup 100]Mo+[sup 100]Mo at 18.7[ital A] MeV and [sup 12[minus]]Sn+[sup 120]Sn at 18.4[ital A] MeV. The observed anisotropy of the in-plane angular distributions points to the fast decay of a rotating (and strongly deformed) nuclear object formed at the end of the deep-inelastic interaction. The derived time scale of the process indicates that asymmetric divisions are faster than symmetric ones.

Abstract

The multiplicities of p and \ensuremath{\alpha} particles detected in coincidence with fragments emitted in fully relaxed collisions in the reactions of 18.5A MeV $^{136}\mathrm{Xe}$${+}^{48}$Ti have been measured for different exit channel mass asymmetries. A kinematic source analysis of the spectra and angular distributions of the light particles has been used to separate the total multiplicities into prescission and postscission contributions. From these results, the excitation energies at scission are determined using an empirical technique based upon previous measurements of light charged particle multiplicities observed in coincidence with evaporation residues. These excitation energies are found to decrease from \ensuremath{\sim}400 MeV to 110 MeV as the fragment mass asymmetry, ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{H}}$/${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}}$, varies from 4.8 to 1.0. A corresponding increase of the mean lifetime of the scissioning nucleus from \ensuremath{\sim}5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}22}$ s to \ensuremath{\sim}1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}20}$ s is derived using calculated statistical model decay widths. The extent to which this variation of lifetime with mass asymmetry may be attributed to completely damped deep inelastic collisions or to dynamic delays in the decay of a compound nucleus is discussed as is the need for inclusion of dynamics in the deexcitation calculations for hot nuclei. Observed three fragment events are also discussed.

Abstract

Current and charge signals have been collected for Se ions at 408 MeV, S at 160 MeV and Ni at 703 MeV, all stopped in silicon detectors. Some detectors were cut 0 ∘ off the 〈 1 1 1 〉 axis and some off the 〈 1 0 0 〉 axis. Important effects on the shape of the silicon current and charge signals have been observed, depending on the orientation of the impinging ion relative to the crystal axes and planes. A degradation of the energy and risetime resolution of about a factor ∼ 3 with respect to the measured optimal values (for example 7 ∘ off-axis orientation) is observed for ion impinging directions close to crystal axes and/or planes, i.e. the common scenario for normal incidence on 0 ∘ cut detectors. For Pulse Shape Analysis applications, the necessity of using such “random” oriented silicon detectors is demonstrated.

Abstract

Exclusive measurements of two- and three-body events were performed for the system {sup 120}Sn+{sup 100}Mo at 19.1 MeV/nucleon. Most ternary events are consistent with sequential processes in which one of the two deep-inelastic fragments fissions. For such events large differences are found between the fission probabilities of projectilelike and targetlike fragments of a given mass, this probability being larger for the nucleus which gained nucleons. This behavior demonstrates that there is a lack of equilibrium at the end of the deep-inelastic collision.

Abstract

Conversion electrons,γ and X rays from102Rhm (6+,T 1/2=1057 d) have been studied. An electromagnetic branch (2.3±0.3) ·10−3 feeding the102Rh first excited state has been observed in the 6+ isomeric decay. The excitation energy of the 6+ isomer turns out to be 140.7 keV above the 2− ground state.

Evidence for the dependence of excitation energy sharing between two heavy remnants on the difference in the lost mass in two-body peripheral heavy ion reactions at Fermi energy is presented, based on experimental results for the reactions $^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$$+$$^{116}\mathrm{Sn}$, $^{116}\mathrm{Sn}$$+$$^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$, and $^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$$+$$^{93}\mathrm{Nb}$ at $38A$ MeV. An observable based on the experimental velocities of the heavy residues is used to select reactions with equal preevaporative masses of projectile-like fragments and target-like fragments. The excitation energy, evaluated by means of a complete average calorimetry, is found to be larger for the nucleus that finally retains a larger part of the hot interaction region.
