Calabria, the southernmost tip of the Italian Peninsula, is a biogeographically very interesting region for lichenologists, characterised by the abundance of oceanic and suboceanic species with subtropical affinities, but also by the presence of the southernmost outposts of several boreal species on the highest peaks. The lichen biota of Calabria, which began to be intensively studied only from the 1980s, hosts more than 1000 infrageneric taxa. The lichen herbarium of the Botanical Garden of the University of Calabria (CLU) is the most relevant lichen collection from this region. It was established in 1985 and it presently includes 16926 specimens, most of which were collected in Calabria, although there are also several specimens from other parts of Italy and from abroad.This dataset contains 16926 records of lichens for a total of 1316 species. Of the 15219 georeferenced specimens, 10254 were collected in Calabria, while 4965 in other administrative regions of Italy. The dataset is available through GBIF, as well as in ITALIC, the Information System of Italian Lichens.

The "Herbarium Universitatis Tergestinae" (TSB), with a total of ca. 50,000 specimens, includes the largest modern collection of lichens in Italy, with 25,796 samples collected from all over the country since 1984, representing 74% of all taxa known to occur in Italy. Almost all specimens have been georeferenced “a posteriori”. The dataset is available through GBIF, as well as in ITALIC, the Information System of Italian Lichens.The TSB Herbarium hosts the largest modern lichen collection in Italy, with a total of ca. 50,000 specimens. This dataset contains all of the 25,796 specimens collected within the administrative borders of Italy. Amongst them, 98% are georeferenced and 87% have the date of collection. The dataset includes several type specimens (isotypes and holotypes) and exsiccata.

Sustainability rating systems for the built environment involve a multitude of indicators that are based on different types of data. This work capitalizes on an existing multicriteria assessment method and supporting decision-making tool at building and neighbourhood scale, to develop an enhanced method and tool at city scale. The main sustainability issues at building and city scales include site and infrastructure, energy and resources consumption, environmental loadings, climate change, environmental quality, water, waste, transportation, services, social aspects, economy and governance. Approximately 300 indicators distributed among the different scales are used to describe and quantify the various facets of sustainability. Specifically, the building scale includes a pool of 80 indicators of which 17 are key performance indicators (KPIs), the neighbourhood scale has 133 indicators of which 14 are KPIs and the city scale has a total of 99 indicators of which 10 are KPIs that were new additions to the existing method. The emphasis in this paper is given on elaborating the key performance indicators for cities and demonstrating their applicability through a case study. The common method and tools provide a flexible assessment system for local authorities and stakeholders to develop and assess sustainability plans.

The existing literature has shown that, in the context of conventional bank lending to small businesses, trust reduces interest rates. However, the literature has not discussed the role of trust in supporting financing decisions, that is, the margin charged to small business managers at Islamic banks. We select murabaha, the most popular financing product offered by Islamic banks, and examine the role of trust in reducing margins charged for murabaha. We surveyed Islamic bank managers and asked them about the perceived benevolence (habitualization) and perceived integrity (institutionalization) of small business managers with whom they are dealing. We found trust is negatively associated with the margins charged to small businesses. Our results are robust to endogeneity.

Digital data concerning the flora of Italy are largely fragmented among different resources hosted on different platforms, and often with different data standards, which are neither connected by a common access point, nor by web services, thus constituting a relevant obstacle to data access and usage. Taxonomic incongruences add a further complication. This paper describes “FlorItaly”, an online information system which allows to access and query updated information on the checklist of the flora of Italy, aiming at becoming an aggregator for Italian botanical resources. “FlorItaly” was developed in a collaborative effort by more than 50 taxonomists, with the support of the Italian Botanical Society, and of Project “Dryades” (University of Trieste), to provide a better and reliable organization of botanical knowledge in Italy, as well as a relevant simplification for data retrieval, and a further stimulus towards a more collaborative approach in botanical research.

In this paper we describe the distribution of propredicative clitics in nominal copular constructions across different Italo-romance varieties. Different lexical items are recruited from the lexicon to cliticize the predicative NP, all of them either lack inflection or show a neuter inflection: the ‘uninflected’ status of propredicatives, in fact, is an available option among the categorical status of different pronouns. The characteristics of propredicatives across Italo-Romance confirms the predictions of the analysis of Moro (1997: 1) copular constructions allow only one agreement projection (agreement with the subject of the copular sentence and not with the predicate), 2) the proforms are generated in N0 rather than a D0. This analysis challenges the ‘definite’ analyses of romance l-clitics (which date back to Postal 1966): such proposals often invoke the parallel between clitics and definite articles as a reason to treat clitics as belonging to the category D. We will also show that apparent counterexamples found in some varieties in which the proforms agree in gender and number with the nominal predicates rely on semantic restrictions and ellipsis. We will finally update the proposal of Moro (1997) in terms of the labelling algorithm (Moro 2009; Chomsky 2013; Rizzi 2016): the N0 cliticization involved in the propredicative items allows a D0 in situ within the small clause which label the small clause, which otherwise will be unlabelled and imply a crash in the derivation.

Abstract Trust is a key dimension in the principal-agent relationship and it has been studied extensively. However, the dynamics, evolution, and intrinsic motivation and mechanisms have received less attention. This paper investigates the intrinsic motivation of trust and it proposes a theoretical model of trust evolution that is based on the notion of ‘trust response’ and ‘trust spiral’. We then specifically focus on trust within the lending relationship between banks and small businesses, and we run numerical simulations to further illustrate the evolution of involved mutual trust over time. Our model provides implications for future research in both trust evolution and small business lending relationships.

The fabrication of in vitro neuronal cell networks where cells are chemically or electrically connected to form functional circuits with useful properties is of great interest. Standard cell culture substrates provide ensembles of cells that scarcely reproduce physiological structures since their spatial organization and connectivity cannot be controlled. Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition (SCBD) has been used as an effective additive method for the large-scale fabrication of interfaces with extracellular matrix-mimicking surface nanotopography and reproducible morphological properties for cell culture. Due to the high collimation of SCBD, it is possible to exploit stencil masks for the fabrication of patterned films and reproduce features as small as tens of micrometers. Here, we present a protocol to fabricate micropatterned cell culture substrates based on the deposition of nanostructured cluster-assembled zirconia films by stencil-assisted SCBD. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by the fabrication of micrometric patterns able to confine primary astrocytes. Calcium waves propagating in the astrocyte networks are shown.

We investigate the impact of interest and non-interest products and services on the margin a bank can derive from a specific customer. The analysis is based on 4,277 observations of relationships between small cooperative banks and small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in Finland from 2001 to 2005. The results show that only long-term loans significantly contribute to the bank’s margin, whereas short-term loans as well as other additional products and services do not affect the bank’s margin, and cash management services even seem to reduce the bank’s margin. The findings suggest that small cooperative banks did concentrate on their core business during the first years of this millennium, i.e. lending, instead of diversifying their activities to increase their margin. However, by taking only financial considerations into account, small cooperative banks might forget about the non-financial impacts of their decisions, which may involve a considerable loss of information about SMEs.

Buildings and the built environment in cities are seen as both a source of, and solution to, today’s economic, environmental and social challenges. The audit process to collect data and rate their sustainability levels is a demanding process given the complexity of the issues involved. Stakeholders often lack advanced knowledge on the sustainability issues involved, access to practical tools that match the local priorities and the overall resources to diagnose and evaluate the current state, analyse, assess and rank different scenarios, and monitor implementation and progress towards meeting sustainable development goals and local priorities. A new multicriteria European built environment assessment method that is supported by practical tools was developed in a transnational collaborative effort to support the assessment, planning, monitoring and overall decision-making process for rating the sustainability at the building or neighbourhood scale. The assessment system addresses the main sustainability issues (e.g., site and infrastructure, urban systems, energy and natural resources, emissions and environment, service quality, social aspects, economy), which are described and quantified with an “exhaustive” list of ~180 sustainability criteria and indicators, and a manageable number of common mandatory key performance indicators. The assessment system can satisfy the public administrations’ needs for being easy to use, open access, flexible and adaptable tools in order to facilitate their efforts for developing effective sustainability plans.

BackgroundFrailty, defined as multidimensional prognostic index (MPI), has been recently identified as strong predictor of disability and mortality in the elderly with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) is a recently introduced biomarker significantly associated with poor outcome in AIS.ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate in what extent frailty, measured by MPI, and SHR affects the 3-months outcome of patients > 65 years-old with AIS.MethodsConsecutive patients with AIS >65 years-old who underwent intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) from 2015 to 2019 were enrolled in a German and an Italian Stroke Unit. The SHR was calculated by dividing the fasting plasma glucose at admission with glycated hemoglobin. Demographics and clinical premorbid data, stroke-related variables, including baseline and post-treatment NIHSS score were included in a logistic regression model. The 3-months functional outcome was evaluated by using modified Rankin scale (mRS); good outcome was defined as mRS 0–2, poor as mRS ≥ 3.ResultsOne hundred and fifty-five AIS patients were enrolled in the study. Median MPI was 0.19 [0.13–0.31]; 118 (76.1%) patients were classified as “robust” and 37 (23.9%) as “frail.” In regression analysis, age, NIHSS, and MPI demonstrated as the most significant predictor of 3-months good outcome in the whole cohort. In robust patients, SHR values were significantly associated with the outcome.ConclusionsMPI is associated with the 3-months outcome in our cohort, in particular with good outcome. Conversely, SHR seems to be associated with a 3-months poor outcome in “robust” patients but not in frail patients.

Abstract Stroke affects the interconnection between the nervous and immune systems, leading to a down-regulation of immunity called stroke-induced immunosuppression (SII). The primary aim of this study is to investigate SII role as a predictor of functional, neurological, and motor outcomes in the neurorehabilitation setting (NRB). We conducted a prospective observational study enrolling post-acute stroke patients hospitalized for neurorehabilitation. At NRB admission (T0) and discharge (T1), we assessed presence of SII (defined by a neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio ≥ 5) and we evaluated functional independence (Functional Independence Measure-FIM, Barthel Index-BI), motor performances (Tinetti Score, Hauser Ambulation Index) and neurological impairment (NIHSS). We enrolled 96 patients (45.8% females, 70.6 ± 13.9 years, 88.5% ischemic stroke). At T0, 15.6% of patients (15/96) had SII. When compared to immunocompetent patients (IC), the SII group was characterized by worse baseline functional independence, motor performances and neurological disability. The same was confirmed at T1 (FIM p = 0.012, BI p = 0.007, Tinetti p = 0.034, NIHSS p = 0.001). Neurological disability demonstrated a less pronounced improvement in SII (ΔNIHSS: SII: − 2.1 ± 2.3 vs. IC: − 3.1 ± 2.5, p = 0.035). SII group presented a higher percentage of infectious complications during the neurorehabilitation period (SII 80% vs. IC 25.9%; p = 0.001). SII may represent a negative prognostic factor in the neurorehabilitation setting. SII patients were characterized by poorer functional, motor, neurological performances and higher risk of infectious complications. ClinicaTrial registration: NCT05889169.
