1. Thermal Fluctuations of Matter Composition and Quark Nucleation in Compact Stars

Abstract

At the extreme densities reached in the core of neutron stars, it is possible that deconfined quark matter is produced. The formation of this new phase of strongly interacting matter is likely to occur via a first-order phase transition for the typical temperatures reached in astrophysical processes. The first seeds of quark matter would then form through a process of nucleation within the metastable hadronic phase. Here, we address the role of the thermal fluctuations in the hadronic composition on the nucleation of two-flavor quark matter. At finite temperature, the thermodynamic quantities in a system fluctuate around average values. Nucleation being a local process, it is possible that it occurs in a subsystem whose composition makes the nucleation easier. We will consider the total probability of the nucleation as the product between the probability that a subsystem has a certain hadronic composition different from the average in the bulk, and the nucleation probability in that subsystem. We will show how those fluctuations of the hadronic composition can increase the efficiency of nucleation already for temperatures ∼(0.1−1) keV. However, for temperatures ≲(1−10) MeV, the needed overpressure exceeds the maximum pressure reached in compact stars. Finally, for even larger temperatures the process of nucleation can take place, even taking into account finite-size effects.

Abstract

The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Lambda}\Lambda$ and $\bar{p}p \to \bar{\Xi}^+\Xi^-$. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $$\overline{\mathrm{P}}$$ P ¯ ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton–nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the Phase One setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper.

5. Quantum thermodynamic instabilities in compact stars

Abstract

We study the existence of thermodynamic instabilities in the nuclear equation of state relative to the high density regime reached in the central core of compact stars. In the framework of a relativistic mean-field theory, we analyze the asymmetric nuclear properties in beta-equilibrium, including hyperons and Delta-isobar degrees of freedom. We investigate a finite density phase transition characterized by pure hadronic matter with the presence of mechanical instability (relative to the fluctuation of baryon number) and of chemical-diffusive instability (relative to the fluctuation of electric charge concentration). We find that, in the presence of thermodynamic instabilities, two hadronic phases with different values of electric charge content may coexist, with several phenomenological consequences in the physics of compact stars.

Abstract

A brief review of the double hypernuclei physics and state of the art of the todays available data is reported. The production of the prototype of diamond target is illustrated together with the tests to check its impurity level, the surface density, the radiation hardness and the phase modification. Finally the devised way to optimize the interaction between the bunch and the target, minimizing the detector damage, through the so-called “steering beam” technique is presented.

Abstract

The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β−β− decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low (a few nb), being the total reaction cross section much larger (a few b), thus a high sensitivity and a large rejection capability are demanded to the experimental set-up. This limits the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen in order to increase the experimental yield of at least two orders of magnitude, still keeping the high sensitivity of the present set-up, making it feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest. Frontiers technologies are going to be developed, to this purpose, for the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models are being developed in order to extract the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections.

Abstract

The aim of the NUMEN project is to access the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME), involved in the half life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by measuring the cross sections of Heavy Ions (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions with high accuracy. First evidence of the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is shown in the reaction 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar at 270 MeV, performed with MAGNEX spectrometer using Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) beams at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania. Preliminary tests on 116Sn and 116Cd target are already performed. High beam intensity is the new frontiers for these studies.

Abstract

The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Abstract

One of the very interesting aspects in the high energy heavy-ion collisions experiments and in nuclear astrophysics is a detailed study of the thermodynamic properties of strongly interacting nuclear matter far away from the nuclear ground state. The main goal of this contribution is to show that thermodynamic instabilities and phase transitions can take place at finite net baryon density and temperature, where the onset conditions of deconfined quark-gluon plasma should not still realized. Similarly to the low density nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, we show that a finite density phase transition is characterized by pure hadronic matter with both mechanical instability (fluctuations on the baryon density) that by chemical-diffusive instability (fluctuations on the strangeness concentration). The main goal is to investigate how the constraints on the global conservation of the baryon number, electric charge fraction, and strangeness neutrality, in the presence of Delta-isobar degrees of freedom, hyperons, and strange mesons, influence the behavior of the equation of state in a regime of finite values of baryon density and temperature. It turns out that in this situation hadronic phases with different values of strangeness content may coexist, altering significantly meson-antimeson ratios.

Abstract

We investigate the presence of thermodynamic instabilities in the high density nuclear matter reached in the central core of compact stars. In the framework of a relativistic mean-field theory, we study the cold hadronic equation of state in beta-equilibrium and charge neutral matter, including hyperons and Δ -isobar degrees of freedom. By considering fluctuations of the electric charge concentration of strongly interacting matter, we analyze a finite density phase transition characterized by pure hadronic matter with both mechanical instability that by chemical-diffusive instability. It turns out that in this situation hadronic phases with different values of electric charge content may coexist, with several implications in the bulk properties of compact stars.

Abstract

The case of the internal target for the hyper-nuclear experiment of the PANDA (antiproton Annihilation at Darmstadt) Collaboration at the High Energy Storage Ring of Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research is illustrated. After a discussion of the problems arising from the interaction of a solid internal target with an antiproton beam, the design of material, shape and sizes of a target satisfying the experimental requirements is presented. The techniques used to produce a prototype of this target are illustrated. Then the results of the tests performed on the prototype for investigating the properties (purity, radiation hardness, structure modifications after shaping) are reported and the plan of the future activity is pointed out.

Abstract

We propose a model for short duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) based on the formation of a quark star after the merger of two neutron stars. We assume that the sGRB central engine is a proto-magnetar, which has been previously invoked to explain the plateau-like X-ray emission observed following both long and short GRBs. Here, we show that: i) a few milliseconds after the merger it is possible to form a stable and massive star made in part of quarks; ii) during the early cooling phase of the incompletely formed quark star, the flux of baryons ablated from the surface by neutrinos is large and it does not allow the outflow to achieve a bulk Lorentz factor high enough to produce a GRB; iii) after the quark burning front reaches the stellar surface, baryon ablation ceases and the jet becomes too baryon poor to produce a GRB; iv) however, between these two phases a GRB can be produced over the finite timescale required for the baryon pollution to cease; a characteristic timescale of the order of $\sim 0.1 $ s naturally results from the time the conversion front needs to cover the distance between the rotational pole and the latitude of the last closed magnetic field line; v) we predict a correlation between the luminosity of the sGRB and its duration, consistent with the data; vi) our model also predicts a delay of the order of ten seconds between the time of the merger event and the sGRB, allowing for the possibility of precursor emission and implying that the jet will encounter the dense cocoon formed immediately after the merger., 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0v\b{eta}\b{eta}) is considered the best potential resource to access the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that neutrinos are their own anti-particles (Majorana particles). Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research "beyond Standard Model" and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) are used as a tool to extract information on the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} Nuclear Matrix Elements. In DCE reactions and \b{eta}\b{eta} decay indeed the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Thus the measurement of the DCE absolute cross-sections can give crucial information on \b{eta}\b{eta} matrix elements. In a wider view, the NUMEN international collaboration plans a major upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in the next years in order to increase the experimental production of nuclei of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest as candidates for 0v\b{eta}\b{eta}.

We study the presence of thermodynamic instabilities in a nuclear medium at finite temperature and density where nuclear phase transitions can take place. Such a phase transition is characterized by pure hadronic matter with both mechanical instability (fluctuations on the baryon density) that by chemical-diffusive instability (fluctuations on the electric charge concentration). Similarly to the liquid-gas phase transition, the nucleonic and the Δ-matter phase have a different isospin density in the mixed phase. In the liquid-gas phase transition, the process of producing a larger neutron excess in the gas phase is referred to as isospin fractionation. A similar effects can occur in the nucleon-Δ matter phase transition due essentially to a Δ- excess in the Δ-matter phase in asymmetric nuclear matter. In this context we also discuss the relevance of Δ-isobar and hyperon degrees of freedom in the bulk properties of the protoneutron stars at fixed entropy per baryon, in the presence and in the absence of trapped neutrinos.

Abstract

It is known from the early work of May in 1964 that ideal Bose gas do not exhibit condensation phenomenon in two dimensions. On the other hand, it is also known that the thermostatistics arising from q-deformed oscillator algebra has no connection with the spatial dimensions of the system. Our recent work concerns the study of important thermodynamic functions such as the entropy, occupation number, internal energy and specific heat in ordinary three spatial dimensions, where we established that such thermostatistics is developed by consistently replacing the ordinary thermodynamic derivatives by the Jackson derivatives. The thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions in two spatial dimensions is an unresolved question and that is the subject of this investigation. We study the principal thermodynamic functions of both bosons and fermions in the two dimensional q-deformed formalism and we find that, different from the standard case, the specific heat of q-boson and q-fermion ideal gas, at fixed temperature and number of particle, are no longer identical., 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We present several arguments which favor the scenario of two coexisting families of compact stars: hadronic stars and quark stars. Besides the well known hyperon puzzle of the physics of compact stars, a similar puzzle exists also when considering delta resonances. We show that these particles appear at densities close to twice saturation density and must be therefore included in the calculations of the hadronic equation of state. Abstract

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($��N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $��N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- ��^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to ��^+��^- ��^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos��_{��^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

One of the very interesting aspects of high energy heavy-ion collisions experiments is a detailed study of the thermodynamical properties of strongly interacting nuclear matter away from the nuclear ground state. In this direction, many efforts were focused on searching for possible phase transitions in such collisions. We investigate thermodynamic instabilities in a hot and dense nuclear medium where a phase transition from nucleonic matter to resonance-dominated [Formula: see text]-matter can take place. Such a phase transition can be characterized by both mechanical instability (fluctuations on the baryon density) and by chemical-diffusive instability (fluctuations on the strangeness concentration) in asymmetric nuclear matter. In analogy with the liquid–gas nuclear phase transition, hadronic phases with different values of antibaryon–baryon ratios and strangeness content may coexist. Such a physical regime could be, in principle, investigated in the future high-energy compressed nuclear matter experiments which will make it possible to create compressed baryonic matter with a high net baryon density.

Abstract

The appearance of delta isobars in beta-stable matter is regulated by the be- haviour of the symmetry energy at densities larger than saturation density. We show that by taking into account recent constraints on the density derivative of the symmetry energy and the theoretical and experimental results on the excitations of delta isobars in nuclei, delta isobars are necessary ingredients for the equations of state used for studying neutron stars. We analyze the effect of the appearance of deltas on the structure of neutron stars: as in the case of hyperons, matter containing delta is too soft for allowing the existence of 2Mneutron stars. Quark stars on the other hand, could reach very massive configu- rations and they could form from a process of conversion of hadronic stars in which an initial seed of strangeness appears through hyperons.

Abstract

Physical motivations indicating that the electron-nuclear plasma of a stellar core (like the solar core) is not in a global thermodynamical equilibrium but satisfies the conditions of a metastable state are described. Momentum distributions of electrons and ions are nonextensive power law distributions, rather than the Maxwellian distribution of a global equilibrium state. Some open astrophysical problems are discussed as signals of deviations from global equilibrium description. The use of nonextensive distributions, appropriate in the case of metastable states, to evaluate atomic and nuclear rates of several processes in astrophysical systems, can lead to the solutions of the reported problems. Conditions of metastability for these systems are discussed.

We study the effects of the gapless color-flavor locked (gCFL) phase on the equation of state of strongly interacting matter in the range of baryonic chemical potential involved in a compact star. We analyze the possibility of a phase transition from hadronic matter to gCFL quark matter and we discuss, for different values of the strange quark mass and diquark coupling strength, the existence of a gCFL phase in quark or hybrid stars. Abstract

Galitskii and Yakimets showed that in dense or low temperature plasma, due to quantum uncertainty effect, the particle distribution function over momenta acquires a power-like tail even under conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium. We show that in weakly non-ideal plasmas, like the solar interior, both non-extensivity and quantum uncertainty should be taken into account to derive equilibrium ion distribution functions and to estimate nuclear reaction rates and solar neutrino fluxes. The order of magnitude of the deviation from the standard Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution can be derived microscopically by considering the presence of random electrical microfield in the stellar plasma. We show that such a nonextensive statistical effect can be very relevant in many nuclear astrophysical problems.

Following the basic prescriptions of the Tsallis' nonextensive thermodynamics, we study the relativistic nonextensive thermodynamics and the equation of state for a perfect gas at the equilibrium. Abstract

We study the dependence of the CNO nuclear reaction rates on temperature, in the range of $10^7\div 10^8$ K, the typical range of temperature evolution from a Sun-like star towards a white dwarf. We show that the temperature dependence of the CNO nuclear reaction rates is strongly affected by the presence of non-extensive statistical effects in the dense stellar core. A very small deviation from the Maxwell-Boltzmann particle distribution implies a relevant enhancement of the CNO reaction rate and could explain the presence of heavier elements (e.g. Fe, Mg) in the final composition of a white dwarf core. Abstract

We study two different physical scenarios of thermonuclear reactions in stellar plasmas proceeding through a narrow resonance at low energy or through the low energy wing of a wide resonance at high energy. Correspondingly, we derive two approximate analytical formulae in order to calculate thermonuclear resonant reaction rates inside very coupled and non ideal astrophysical plasmas in which non-extensive effects are likely to arise. Our results are presented as simple first order corrective factors that generalize the well known classical rates obtained in the framework of Maxwell-Boltzmann statistical mechanics. As a possible application of our results, we calculate the dependence of the total corrective factor with respect to the energy at which the resonance is located, in an extremely dense and non ideal carbon plasma., 5 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

We study the effects of color superconductivity on the structure and formation of compact stars. We show that it is possible to satisfy most of recent observational boundaries on masses and radii if a diquark condensate forms in a hybrid or a quark star. Moreover, we find that a huge amount of energy, of the order of 1053 erg, can be released in the conversion from a (metastable) hadronic star into a (stable) hybrid or quark star, if the presence of a color superconducting phase is taken into account. Accordingly to the scenario proposed in Astrophys.J.586(2003)1250, the energy released in this conversion can power a Gamma Ray Burst. Possible experimental evidences, indicating a range of time delay between a Supernova explosion and a subsequent Gamma Ray Burst, are here discussed and interpreted.

Abstract

In present days new neutron detection methods are under developed due to the global shortage of 3He and the toxicity of BF3. Neutrons can be indirectly detected by high-energy photons. The performance of a cylindrical NaI crystal, 4 in. diameter and 8 in. length as an indirect neutron detector has been investigated. Measurements were performed with 252Cf source with bare and shielded NaI detector. With a proper converter and moderator structure for the NaI detector, the detection efficiencies and the minimum detectable activities are improved, making the method very interesting for security applications. The indirect detection of neutrons by photons has several advantages. First, this method can in principle be suited by any gamma spectrometer with only slight modifications that do not compromise with its gamma spectrometry measurements. Second, fission neutron sources and neutron generators can be discriminated thanks to their different gamma energy spectra, a discrimination easily done by a NaI spectrometer.

Abstract

There have been recently strong observational indications [1] about the possibility that some Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) can take place years after a supernova (SN) explosion due to some mechanism involving the compact star left by the stellar collapse associated to the supernova. In the present work, we propose a model to explain this possible “delayed” GRB-SN association. Our model is based on the conversion of a pure hadronic star (neutron star) into a star made at least in part of deconfined quark matter. The conversion process can be delayed if the surface tension of the interface between the hadronic and deconfined quark matter phases is taken into account. The nucleation time ( i.e. the time to form a critical-size drop of quark matter) can be extremely long if the mass of the star is small. Via mass accretion the nucleation time can be dramatically reduced and the star is finally converted from the metastable into the stable configuration. A huge amount of energy, of the order of 10 52 –10 53 erg, is released during the conversion process and can produce a powerful gamma ray burst. The delay between the supernova explosion generating the metastable neutron star and the stellar conversion can explain the delay observed in GRB990705 [1] and in GRB011211 [2].

The thermostatistics of q -deformed bosons and fermions can be built on the formalism of q -calculus. As in nonextensive statistics, the entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved but there are crucial differences between the two theories. We derive the most important thermodynamic functions of q -deformed fermions and bosons. Abstract

On the basis of the recently proposed formalism [A. Lavagno, P.N. Swamy, Phys. Rev. E 61 (2000)], we show that the realization of the thermostatistics of q-deformed quantum groups can be built on the formalism of q-calculus. It is found that the entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if we use an appropriate Jackson derivative instead of the ordinary thermodynamic derivative. This allows us to obtain a generalized nonextensive entropy and other thermodynamic quantities which depend on the q-basic number. The connection with nonextensive Tsallis statistics is discussed. Finally, we briefly report on applications and practical results, in particular the Bose–Einstein condensation phenomenon of q-bosons.

Abstract

We discuss the formation of $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ isobars in neutron star matter. We show that their threshold density strictly correlates with the density derivative of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter: the $L$ parameter. By restricting $L$ to the range of values indicated by recent experimental and theoretical analysis, i.e., $40\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{MeV}\ensuremath{\lesssim}L\ensuremath{\lesssim}62\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$, we find that $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ isobars appear at a density of the order of 2 to 3 times the nuclear matter saturation density, i.e., the same range as for the appearance of hyperons. The range of values of the couplings of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}\mathrm{s}$ with the mesons is restricted by the analysis of the data obtained from photoabsorption, electron and pion scattering on nuclei. If the potential of the $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ in nuclear matter is close to the one indicated by the experimental data then the equation of state becomes soft enough that a ``\ensuremath{\Delta} puzzle'' exists, similar to the ``hyperon puzzle'' widely discussed in the literature. Possible solutions to this puzzle are also discussed.

Abstract

The existence of neutron stars with masses of $\sim 2\,M_{\odot}$ requires a stiff equation of state at high densities. On the other hand, the necessary appearance also at high densities of new degrees of freedom, such as hyperons and $\Delta$ resonances, can lead to a strong softening of the equation of state with resulting maximum masses of $\sim 1.5\, M_{\odot}$ and radii smaller than $\sim 10$ km. Hints for the existence of compact stellar objects with very small radii have been found in recent statistical analysis of quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters. We propose an interpretation of these two apparently contradicting measurements, large masses and small radii, in terms of two separate families of compact stars: hadronic stars, whose equation of state is soft, can be very compact, while quark stars, whose equation of state is stiff, can be very massive. In this respect an early appearance of $\Delta$ resonances is crucial to guarantee the stability of the branch of hadronic stars. Our proposal could be tested by measurements of radii with an error of $\sim 1$ km, which is within reach of the planned LOFT satellite, and it would be further strengthened by the discovery of compact stars heavier than $\sim 2\,M_{\odot}$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, revised version, accepted by Phys.Rev.D

Abstract

The case of the internal target for the hypernuclear experiment of the PANDA (antiproton Annihilation at Darmstadt) Collaboration at the HESR (High Energy Storage Ring) of FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is illustrated. The main aspects of the experiment designed for the production of Double Hypernuclei are initially summarized. The problems arising from the interaction of a solid internal target with an antiproton beam inside a ring are briefly discussed, together with the constraints in making such a set up. The design of material, shape and size of a target satisfying the experimental requirements is presented. The techniques used to produce a prototype of this target are illustrated. Then the results of the tests performed on the prototype to investigate the properties (purity, radiation hardness, structure modifications after shaping) are reported and the plan of the future activity is presented.

We investigate the presence of thermodynamic instabilities in compressed asymmetric baryonic matter, reachable in high energy heavy ion collisions, and in the cold β-stable compact stars. To this end we study the relativistic nuclear equation of state with the inclusion of Δ-isobars and require the global conservation of baryon and electric charge numbers. Similarly to the low density nuclear liquid-gas phase transition, we show that a phase transition can occur in dense asymmetric nuclear matter and it is characterized by both mechanical instability (fluctuations on the baryon density) and by chemical-diffusive instability (fluctuations on the electric charge concentration). Such thermodynamic instabilities can imply a very different electric charge fraction Z/A in the coexisting phases during the phase transition and favoring an early formation of Δ− particles with relevant phenomenological consequences in the physics of the protoneutron stars and compact stars. Finally, we discuss the possible co-existence of very compact and very massive compact stars in terms of two separate families: compact hadronic stars and very massive quark stars.

Abstract

The presence of memory effects and color long-range forces among the many-parton system in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions can affect the particle statistical behavior at the freeze-out temperature. In this context, we calculate, in the framework of the equilibrium generalized non-extensive thermostatistics, the shape of pion transverse mass spectrum and the value of the transverse momentum correlation function of the pions emitted during the central Pb+Pb collisions and we show that the experimental results is well reproduced assuming very small deviations from the standard statistics., Comment: 4 pages, contribution to the proceedings of the International Conference on Quark Nuclear Physics (Adelaide, February 21-25, 2000)

Abstract

We study the hydrodynamical transition from an hadronic star into a quark or a hybrid star. We discuss the possible mode of burning, using a fully relativistic formalism and realistic Equations of State in which hyperons can be present. We take into account the possibility that quarks form a diquark condensate. We find that the conversion process always corresponds to a deflagration and never to a detonation. Hydrodynamical instabilities can develop on the front but the increase in the conversion’s velocity is not sufficient to transform the deflagration into a detonation. Concerning convection, it does not always develop. Instead, the process of conversion from ungapped quark matter to gapped quarks always allows the formation of a convective layer.

Abstract

Density and temperature conditions in the solar core suggest that the microscopic diffusion of electrons and ions could be nonstandard: Diffusion and friction coefficients are energy dependent, collisions are not two-body processes and retain memory beyond the single scattering event. A direct consequence of nonstandard diffusion is that the equilibrium energy distribution of particles departs from the Maxwellian one (tails goes to zero more slowly or faster than exponentially) modifying the reaction rates. This effect is qualitatively different from temperature and/or composition modification: Small changes in the number of particles in the distribution tails can strongly modify the rates without affecting bulk properties, such as the sound speed or hydrostatic equilibrium, which depend on the mean values from the distribution. This mechanism can considerably increase the range of predictions for the neutrino fluxes allowed by the current experimental values (cross sections and solar properties) and can be used to reduce the discrepancy between these predictions and the solar neutrino experiments., Comment: 16 pages, ReVTeX, no figures. Abstract

Baryon pairing and neutron superfluidity are believed to play an important role in the evolution of neutron stars. The pairing interaction provides a partial antisym-metrization of the nucleons in the stars with the evidence that fractional statistics must hold. By using a kinetic approach recently proposed [G. Kaniadakis, A. Lavagno and P. Quarati, Nucl. Phys. B 466 (1996) 527], we derive a non-linear Boltzmann equation which takes into account collective effects introduced by an exclusion-inclusion principle. This equation describes the dynamics of particles ruled by a fractional statistics. In addition, we extend this Boltzmann equation to the relativistic case and discuss the relevance of the quark matter in the star core.

Abstract

In this paper we will show that, because of the long-range microscopic memory of the random force, acting in the solar core, mainly on the electrons and the protons than on the light and heavy ions (or, equally, because of anomalous diffusion of solar core constituents of light mass and of normal diffusion of heavy ions), the equilibrium statistical distribution that these particles must obey, is that of generalized Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics (or the Tsallis non-extensive statistics), the distribution differing very slightly from the usual Maxwellian distribution. Due to the high-energy depleted tail of the distribution, the nuclear rates are reduced and, using earlier results on the standard solar model neutrino fluxes, calculated by Clayton and collaborators, we can evaluate fluxes in good agreement with the experimental data. While proton distribution is only very slightly different from Maxwellian there is a little more difference with electron distribution. We can define one central electron temperature as a few percent higher than the ion central temperature nearly equal to the standard solar model temperature. The difference is related to the different reductions with respect to the standard solar model values needed for $B$ and $CNO$ neutrinos and for $Be$ neutrinos.

Abstract

We study the effects of color superconductivity on the structure of compact stars, and we show that it is possible to satisfy most of recent observational boundaries on masses and radii if a diquark condensate forms in a hybrid or in a quark star. Furthermore, we find that the constraints on masses and radii of the compact stellar objects put rather stringent limits on the parameter values of the nuclear equation of state.
