The design of integrated adolescent mental health care design should address needs and preferences of patients and parents/guardians.We conducted interviews and focus groups with adolescents aged 13-17 years who received care at Kaiser Permanente Washington in 2020 and interviews with parents of such adolescents. We sought to (1) understand the challenges of primary care-based mental health and substance use screening and care for adolescents and (2) identify program design solutions. Sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded. Thematic analysis was applied to identify key challenges and design solutions.Emerging themes from interviews (n = 41) and focus groups (n = 10) were summarized in five overarching design principles: Engagement, Privacy, Communication, Choice, and Ease. Each design principle was expanded for operationalization within a new health system program.Health systems serving adolescents in primary care may consider application of these design principles to the development of mental health integration programs.

The low rates of actual contraceptive failure and high rates of contraceptive use among young women highlight that choice of contraceptive method and patterns of contraceptive use greatly influence unintended pregnancy risk. Promoting contraceptive use among adolescent and young adult women requires supportive health systems and health providers who understand this population's evolving developmental needs. It also requires an awareness of effective tools for counseling patients, while being mindful of the power dynamics operational during clinical encounters to avoid inadvertently coercive interpersonal dynamics. Missed opportunities to provide such patient-centered care can lead to unplanned pregnancies and suboptimal health and social consequences for young women. Unfortunately, health providers often lack the tools and resources to appropriately identify and meet individual young women's contraceptive needs. This article summarizes the evidence supporting contraceptive counseling strategies linked with contraceptive initiation among young women, and evidence-based approaches for supporting contraceptive adherence and continuation after method initiation. It also orients readers to the unique neurodevelopmental factors that influence the shared decision-making process during contraception counseling sessions with young women. New and emerging approaches for supporting contraceptive initiation, adherence, and continuation are reviewed.

Study Objective To examine what predicts low personal acceptability of 4 different contraceptive methods among young women. Design Cross-sectional survey. Setting Urban adolescent contraception clinic in Colorado. Participants Female clinic patients ages 13-24 initiating contraception from August 2011 to April 2012. Interventions and Main Outcome Measures Survey participants reported their personal acceptability for oral contraceptive pills, depot medroxyprogesterone, contraceptive implants, and intrauterine devices on a scale from 0 (low) to 10 (high). Responses of 0-4 were categorized as low personal acceptability. Demographic characteristics, reproductive history, and perceived contraceptive satisfaction of friends and family members were incorporated into multivariable and hierarchical logistic regression models to determine distinct predictors of low personal acceptability for each method. Results Surveys were completed by 1067 women. Participants' mean age was 20 (±2.6) years. Half (552/1067) were white, 26% (277/1067) Hispanic, and 8.5% (91/1067) black. Of participants who were aware of oral contraceptive pills 52% (535/1037) reported low acceptability of this method compared with 74% (645/876) of those aware of depot medroxyprogesterone. Fewer reported low acceptability of intrauterine devices (37% or 303/825) or implant (43% or 356/839), although fewer overall participants had heard of these methods. Each method had unique predictors of low personal acceptability, however, for all method models, significant predictors included knowing someone who had become pregnant while using that method or having a friend who dislikes that method. Conclusion Young women in this study with low personal acceptability of the 4 most common contraceptive methods had distinct demographic and reproductive health characteristics. Perceived negative experiences of friends and family members using contraception appeared most influential.

Background: Adolescents in the United States are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy. Adolescent-centered health services may reduce barriers to health care; yet, limited research has focused on adolescents’ own perspectives on patient-provider communication during a sexual health visit. Methods: Twenty-four adolescents (14-19 years old) seeking care in a public health clinic in Washington State participated in one-on-one qualitative interviews. Interviews explored participants’ past experiences with medical providers and their preferences regarding provider characteristics and communication strategies. Results: Interviews revealed that (1) individual patient dynamics and (2) patient-provider interaction dynamics shape the experience during a sexual health visit. Individual patient dynamics included evolving level of maturity, autonomy, and sexual experience. Patient-provider interaction dynamics were shaped by adolescents’ perceptions of providers as sources of health information who distribute valued sexual health supplies like contraception and condoms. Participant concerns about provider judgment, power differential, and lack of confidentiality also emerged as important themes. Conclusions: Adolescents demonstrate diverse and evolving needs for sexual health care and interactions with clinicians as they navigate sexual and emotional development.

IMPORTANCE: Increased use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC; intrauterine devices [IUDs] and implants) has likely contributed to declining US teenage pregnancy and birth rates, yet sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates among teenagers remain high. While LARC methods are highly effective for pregnancy prevention, they, as with all nonbarrier methods, do not protect against STIs, including HIV. Studies of the general adolescent population suggest condom use is lower among LARC vs non-LARC hormonal methods users (birth control pill, contraceptive patch, vaginal ring, or injection). Despite the high use of LARC among postpartum teenagers, no studies have examined whether condom use differs by contraceptive method in this population. OBJECTIVE: To compare condom use among sexually active postpartum teenagers using LARC vs those using non-LARC hormonal methods. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional analysis using 2012 to 2015 data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a multisite and population-based surveillance system that collects data on maternal attitudes, behaviors, and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy. We used data from 37 sites. Using multivariable survey-weighted logistic regression, we assessed the association of condom use by contraceptive methods. Participants were teenage mothers (≤19 years) with a recent live birth reporting LARC or non-LARC hormonal method use. Data were analyzed between March 2018 and April 2018. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Condom use with LARC vs condom use with non-LARC hormonal methods. RESULTS: Among the 5480 (weighted N = 245 847) postpartum teenage mothers in our sample, most were aged 18 to 19 years, unmarried, had current Medicaid coverage, were first-time mothers, had reported their pregnancy was unintended, and almost half were non-Hispanic white. Overall, condom use was reported by 28.8% of these teenagers. Users of LARC compared with non-LARC hormonal methods were half as likely to use condoms (17.8% vs 35.6%; adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR], 0.50; 95% CI, 0.41-0.60). Users of IUDs (15.1%) were less likely to report condom use than those using an implant (21.5%; aPR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.51-0.98), patch, ring, or injection users (24.9%; aPR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.47-0.79), and pill users (47.2%; aPR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.25-0.40). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Self-reported condom use was low overall among postpartum teenage mothers and lower among users of LARC vs non-LARC hormonal methods. Given the high rates of STIs among teenage mothers combined with higher use of LARC among postpartum teenaged mothers, interventions to promote condom use for STI/HIV prevention during the postpartum period are critically important.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of a program that provides long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) services within school-based health centers (SBHCs) and to identify barriers and facilitators to implementation as reported by SBHC clinicians and administrators, public health officials, and community partners. Methods We conducted 14 semistructured interviews with key informants involved in the implementation of LARC services. Key informants included SBHC clinicians and administrators, public health officials, and community partners. We used a content analysis approach to analyze interview transcripts for themes. We explored barriers to and facilitators of LARC service delivery across and within key informant groups. Results The most cited barriers across key informant groups were as follows: perceived lack of provider procedural skills and bias and negative attitudes about LARC methods. The most common facilitators identified across groups were as follows: clear communication strategies, contraceptive counseling practice changes, provider trainings, and stakeholder engagement. Two additional barriers emerged in specific key informant groups. Technical and logistical barriers to LARC service delivery were cited heavily by SBHC administrative staff, community partners, and public health officials. Expense and billing was a major barrier to SBHC administrative staff. Conclusions LARC counseling and procedural services can be implemented in an SBHC setting to promote access to effective contraceptive options for adolescent women.

Access to youth friendly health services is vital for ensuring sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and well-being of adolescents. This study is a descriptive review of the effectiveness of initiatives to improve adolescent access to and utilization of sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS) in low- and middle-income countries. We examined four SRHS intervention types: (1) facility based, (2) out-of-facility based, (3) interventions to reach marginalized or vulnerable populations, (4) interventions to generate demand and/or community acceptance. Outcomes assessed across the four questions included uptake of SRHS or sexual and reproductive health commodities and sexual and reproductive health biologic outcomes. There is limited evidence to support the effectiveness of initiatives that simply provide adolescent friendliness training for health workers. Data are most ample (10 initiatives demonstrating weak but positive effects and one randomized controlled trial demonstrating strong positive results on some outcome measures) for approaches that use a combination of health worker training, adolescent-friendly facility improvements, and broad information dissemination via the community, schools, and mass media. We found a paucity of evidence on out-of-facility–based strategies, except for those delivered through mixed-use youth centers that demonstrated that SRHS in these centers are neither well used nor effective at improving SRH outcomes. There was an absence of studies or evaluations examining outcomes among vulnerable or marginalized adolescents. Findings from 17 of 21 initiatives assessing demand-generation activities demonstrated at least some association with adolescent SRHS use. Of 15 studies on parental and other community gatekeepers' approval of SRHS for adolescents, which assessed SRHS/commodity uptake and/or biologic outcomes, 11 showed positive results. Packages of interventions that train health workers, improve facility adolescent friendliness, and endeavor to generate demand through multiple channels are ready for large-scale implementation. However, further evaluation of these initiatives is needed to clarify mechanisms and impact, especially of specific program components. Quality research is needed to determine effective means to deliver services outside the facilities, to reach marginalized or vulnerable adolescents, and to determine effective approaches to increase community acceptance of adolescent SRHS.

The US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (MEC) and US Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (SPR) provide evidence-based guidance to safely provide contraception counseling and services. Both documents were updated in 2016 and are endorsed by the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. The purpose of this mini-review is to highlight updates to the US MEC and US SPR that are most relevant to health care providers of adolescents to support dissemination and implementation of these evidence-based best practices. This document is intended to highlight these changes and to complement, not replace, the detailed practice guidance within the US MEC and US SPR.

Background: A key strategy to reduce unintended adolescent pregnancies is to expand access to long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods, including intrauterine devices and subdermal contraceptive implants. LARC services can be provided to adolescents in school-based health and other primary care settings, yet limited knowledge and negative attitudes about LARC methods may influence adolescents’ utilization of these methods. This study aimed to evaluate correlates of knowledge and acceptability of LARC methods among adolescent women at a school-based health center (SBHC). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, female patients receiving care at 2 SBHCs in Seattle, Washington completed an electronic survey about sexual and reproductive health. Primary outcomes were (1) LARC knowledge as measured by percentage correct of 10 true-false questions and (2) LARC acceptability as measured by participants reporting either liking the idea of having an intrauterine device (IUD)/subdermal implant or currently using one. Results: A total of 102 students diverse in race/ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds completed the survey (mean age 16.2 years, range 14.4-19.1 years). Approximately half reported a lifetime history of vaginal sex. Greater LARC knowledge was associated with white race (regression coefficient [coef] = 26.8; 95% CI 13.3-40.4; P < .001), history of vaginal intercourse (coef = 29.9; 95% CI 17.1-42.7; P < .001), and current/prior LARC use (coef = 22.8; 95% CI 6.5-40.0; P = .007). Older age was associated with lower IUD acceptability (odds ratio = 0.53, 95% CI 0.30-0.94; P = .029) while history of intercourse was associated with greater implant acceptability (odds ratio 5.66, 95% CI 1.46-22.0; P = .012). Discussion: Adolescent women in this SBHC setting had variable knowledge and acceptability of LARC. A history of vaginal intercourse was the strongest predictor of LARC acceptability. Our findings suggest a need for LARC counseling and education strategies, particularly for young women from diverse cultural backgrounds and those with less sexual experience.

Marijuana is the most common illicit drug of abuse in adolescents, nationally and globally. What is currently known about the effects of marijuana on adolescents and their lives reveals a number of concerns, ranging from acute physical effects to long-term physical, mental, and social consequences. As states begin to re-evaluate marijuana policies, it is important that the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults remain a priority. Much about marijuana and its medicinal uses is still not known, nor is there adequate data about the long-term effects of use of stronger marijuana products over the life course. Although much research is needed on marijuana and its derivatives, enough is known about its effects on adolescents to recommend an increased focus on preventing marijuana use in this stage of life.

INTRODUCTION:The extent that the dual burden of undernutrition and overnutrition affects refugee children before resettlement in the US is not well described. OBJECTIVE:To describe the prevalence of wasting, stunting, overweight, and obesity among refugee children ages 0-10 years at their overseas medical screening examination prior to resettlement in Washington State (WA), and to compare the nutritional status of refugee children with that of low-income children in WA. METHODS:We analyzed anthropometric measurements of 1047 refugee children ages 0-10 years old to assess their nutritional status at the overseas medical screening examination prior to resettlement in WA from July 2012--June 2014. The prevalence estimates of the nutritional status categories were compared by country of origin. In addition, the nutritional status of refugee children age 0-5 years old were compared to that of low-income children in WA from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System. RESULTS:A total of 982 children were eligible for the study, with the majority (65%) from Somalia, Iraq and Burma. Overall, nearly one-half of all refugee children had at least one form of malnutrition (44.9%). Refugee children ages 0-10 years were affected by wasting (17.3%), stunting (20.1%), overweight (7.6%) and obesity (5.9%). Study Objective Long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods can prevent teen pregnancy yet remain underutilized by adolescents in the United States. Pediatric providers are well positioned to discuss LARCs with adolescents, but little is known about how counseling should occur in pediatric primary care settings. We explored adolescent womens' attitudes and experiences with LARCs to inform the development of adolescent-centered LARC counseling strategies. Design Qualitative analysis of one-on-one interviews. Setting Participants were recruited from 2 urban school-based, primary care centers. Participants Thirty adolescent women aged 14-18 years, diverse in race/ethnicity, and sexual experience. Interventions Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded using inductive and deductive coding. Main Outcome Measure Major themes were identified to integrate LARC-specific adolescent preferences into existing counseling approaches. Results Participants (mean age, 16.2 years; range, 14-18 years) represented a diverse range of racial and/or ethnic identities. Half (15/30) were sexually active and 17% (5/30) reported current or past LARC use. Five themes emerged regarding key factors that influence LARC choice, including: (1) strong preferences about device-specific characteristics; (2) previous exposure to information about LARCs from peers, family members, or health counseling sessions; (3) knowledge gaps about LARC methods that affect informed decision-making; (4) personal circumstances or experiences that motivate a desire for effective and/or long-acting contraception; and (5) environmental constraints and supports that might influence adolescent access to LARCs. Conclusion We identified 5 factors that influence LARC choice among adolescent women and propose a framework for incorporating these factors into contraceptive counseling services in pediatric primary care settings.

Purpose Adolescents in rural areas have higher unmet medical needs and receive fewer preventive health care visits than their urban counterparts. This community health assessment aimed to describe adolescent experiences of key components of a medical home in rural Washington. Methods A cross-sectional survey using questions from two validated measures was created with input from a community advisory group using community-based participatory research principles. The survey was administered to a convenience sample of high-school students in one rural town. Responses within each medical home domain were grouped to create composite scores. Linear and logistic regression analyses identified characteristics associated with receiving medical home services. Results A total of 217 adolescents aged 13–19 years completed the survey. Eighty-five percent identified as Latino/Hispanic. Respondents described usually or always feeling listened to by providers (80%), respected by providers (89%), and welcomed at their clinic (79%). Fewer reported having a personal health provider (56%), meeting alone with a provider (56%), or knowing the visit was confidential (60%). Those who identified having a primary provider had 2.48 greater odds (95% confidence interval = 1.13–5.45) of reporting a well visit in the previous year and had higher composite scores for compassionate and patient-centered care. Conclusions This sample of rural adolescents reported receiving many characteristics of a medical home but had limited experience with personal providers and confidential services. Improving adolescent access to confidential care may be especially important in small, rural communities. The association of a primary provider with improved medical home experience highlights this key characteristic in an adolescent medical home.

Purpose To evaluate whether the updated South African national contraception policy and guidelines adequately address the needs of adolescents. Methods We used the World Health Organization (WHO) guidance and recommendations on ensuring human rights in the provision of contraceptive information and services as an analytic framework. We assessed the South African policy in relation to each WHO summary recommendation. Specifically, we determined where normative guidance pertaining to adolescents is present and whether it is adequate, normative guidance pertaining to all populations but not specifically adolescents is present, or normative guidance for that recommendation is missing from the policy. We developed an analytic table to discuss with coauthors and draw conclusions. Results We found specific guidance for adolescents relating to 6/9 WHO summary recommendations and 11/24 subrecommendations. Adolescents are highlighted throughout the policy as being at risk for discrimination or coercion, and laws protecting the rights of adolescents are cited. Confidentiality of services for young people is emphasized, and youth-friendly services are described as a key element of service delivery. Areas to strengthen include the need for normative guidance ensuring both availability of contraceptive information and services for young people and adolescent participation in development of community programs and services. Conclusions South Africa's contraception policy and guidelines are comprehensive and forward looking. Nevertheless, there are gaps that may leave adolescents vulnerable to discrimination and coercion and create barriers to accessing contraceptive services. These findings provide insight for the revision and development of adolescent health policies in South Africa and other settings.

Social networking sites (SNS) are popular; adolescents and young adults can display sexual content. The purpose of this study was to explore female college students' perception of sexual reference posts on Facebook. Female students aged 18-24 years were recruited at two large state universities. The study and analysis took place from September 2012 to March 2016. Focus group questions were directed to discussion of sexual reference displays, discussions recorded and qualitative analysis performed. In total, 23 women participated in 5 focus groups. Three major themes emerged: (1) Perceived reasons for posting a sexual references (2) Participant's initial reaction or interpretation when reading sexual reference posts. (3) Perceived consequences of posting sexual references. Findings provide insight into females' perceived link between online and offline sexual behavior. Key Words: 1. Adolescence 2. Adolescent Sexuality Social Networking Sites (SNS) have become increasingly popular among adolescents and young adults as an avenue for socialization and identity exploration. Over 80% of college students use a SNS and college students are more likely to disclose personal information online then in their offline life. (Christofides, Muise, & Desmarais, 2009; Moreno, Brockman, Wasserheit, & Christakis, 2012; Moreno, Swanson, Royer, & Roberts, 2011; Smith, Rainie, & Zickuhr, 2011) Information shared on SNS can shape social norms and have potential offline consequences. A previous study among college students found that participants believed that displayed alcohol references on Facebook were believable, (Moreno, Christakis, Egan, Brockman, & Becker, 2012; Moreno, Grant, Kacvinsky, Egan, & Fleming, 2012) while another study illustrated that participants who displayed alcohol references on Facebook related to intoxication were more likely to meet problem drinking criteria. (Moreno, Christakis, et al., 2012; Westgate, Neighbors, Heppner, Jahn, & Lindgren, 2014) Timely exploration of SNS content among young people may provide insight into normative beliefs and behaviors of this population not captured by traditional surveillance methods and have important implications for adolescent health care providers and researchers. SNS are commonly used to initiate and maintain friendships and romantic relationships as they can display a variety of personal information by users. (Moreno, Brockman, et al., 2012) Such sites provide a venue for adolescents and emerging adults to express their identities which can include references to sexuality and sexual behaviors. (Moreno, Brockman, et al., 2012) Prior research has found that teenage SNS displayers of sexual and romantic references were predominately older and more sexually experienced compared to non-displayers. (Doornwaard, Moreno, van den Eijnden, Vanwesenbeeck, & Ter Bogt, 2014) In addition, those who displayed sexual references perceived that more of their peers approved of sex, supporting that SNS can influence behavioral norms. (Doornwaard et al., 2014) Other studies have linked sexual reference displays with sexual intention and even heightened sexual expectations of the displayer. (Moreno, Brockman, et al., 2012; Moreno, Parks, Zimmerman, Brito, & Christakis, 2009; Moreno et al., 2011) Adolescents and young adults are at risk for adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes, such as sexual assault, sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy,(Murray, 2014; Cuffe, Newton-Levinson, Gift, McFarlane, & Leichliter, 2016) thus their sex related behavior on social media may elucidate important opportunities for preventive interventions. HOW DOES THE PROVIDER-PATIENT INTERACTION SHAPE THE EXPERIENCE OF SEXUAL HEALTH COMMUNICATION? A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS Taraneh Shafii, MD, MPH , Andrea J. In 2006, eight community tuberculosis (TB) cases and a ninth incarceration-related case were identified during an outbreak investigation, which included genotyping of all Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. In 1996, the source patient had pulmonary TB but completed only two weeks of treatment. From February 2005 to May 2006, the source patient lived in four different locations while contagious. The outbreak cases had matching isolate spoligotypes; however, the mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit (MIRU) patterns from isolates from two secondary cases differed by one tandem repeat at a single MIRU locus. The source patient's isolates showed a mixed mycobacterial population with both MIRU patterns. Traditional and molecular epidemiologic methods linked eight secondary TB cases to a single source patient whose incomplete initial treatment, incarceration, delayed diagnosis, and housing instability resulted in extensive transmission. Adequate treatment of the source patient's initial TB or early diagnosis of recurrent TB could have prevented this outbreak.

Background Seven percent of tuberculosis (TB) cases reported to the US National Tuberculosis Surveillance System in 2005 had Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates with resistance to at least isoniazid. Methods We undertook this study to describe demographic characteristics, risk factor information, and treatment outcomes for persons with isoniazid-monoresistant (resistant to isoniazid and susceptible to rifampin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol hydrochloride) TB compared with persons with TB susceptible to all first-line anti-TB drugs. Results The numbers of isoniazid-monoresistant TB cases increased from 303 (4.1%) in 1993 to 351 (4.2%) in 2005. In our multivariate analysis of all TB cases reported from 1993 to 2003, the races/ethnicities of patients with isoniazid-monoresistant TB were significantly more likely to be US-born Asian/Pacific Islander (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4-2.6), foreign-born Asian/Pacific Islander (1.8; 1.4-2.1), foreign-born black non-Hispanic (1.4; 1.1-1.7), or US-born Hispanic (1.3; 1.1-1.5). Isoniazid monoresistance was also associated with failure to complete therapy within 1 year (aOR, 1.7; 95% CI, 1.5-1.8), a history of TB (1.5; 1.3-1.7), and correctional facility residence (1.5; 1.2-1.7). Conclusions Isoniazid-monoresistant TB did not decline from January 1, 1993, through December 31, 2005, despite national downward trends observed in overall TB cases and in multidrug-resistant TB cases. Physicians must ensure completion of treatment for patients taking isoniazid as part of their TB or latent TB infection therapy. In addition, physicians should maintain heightened vigilance for isoniazid resistance when evaluating certain at-risk populations for TB and latent TB infection.

Background Initiatives to promote adolescent friendly health services (AFHS) have been taking place in India and many low- and middle-income countries for nearly two decades. Evaluations of these initiatives have been placed in the public arena from time to time, but little is known about what they say about the overall situation on AFHS in India. This study aimed to describe how efforts to provide AFHS in India have been evaluated, how well they have been evaluated, and what their findings and implications are. Methods We conducted a scoping review of evaluations of AFHS initiatives in India from 2000 to 2014. An electronic search was carried out in Medline and EMBASE. A manual search of grey literature was also performed, and experts were contacted in order to obtain additional manuscripts and reports. Results Thirty evaluation reports were identified representing a broad geographic distribution. Evaluations have focused on government-sponsored AFHS programmes or independent non-governmental organization (NGO) initiatives to strengthen government services. The evaluations primarily measured programme outputs (e.g. quality and service utilization) and health behavioural outcomes (e.g. condom use). Study designs were commonly descriptive or quasi-experimental. Most evaluations found improvement in quality and utilization of services, and some demonstrated an increase in adolescent knowledge or health behaviours. Few measured positive project/programme results such as older age at first pregnancy. Strengths of evaluations were clear objectives, frequent use of multiple data sources, and assessment of programmatic outputs as well as health outcomes. Weaknesses were lack of consistency and quality. Conclusions Our findings confirm that a number of evaluations of AFHS initiatives in India have been carried out. They point to service quality and in behavioural improvements in adolescents. However, their lack of consistency hinders comparison across sites, and their uneven quality means that their findings need to be interpreted with caution.
