The paper offers a historical-bibliographical discussion of the copies of Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), Pandectae (1548) and Bibliotheca instituta et collecta (1574), by Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), present in two Brazilian heritage libraries: the Library of Saint Benedict’s Monastery of São Paulo (BMSBSP) and the National Library of Brazil (BN), in Rio de Janeiro. The contextualization and characterization of the copies are based on the following theoretical-methodological course: 1) presentation of the Gesnerian bibliographical studies in Brazil; 2) considerations on the presence of the Gesnerian editions in libraries; 3) historical comments on BMSBSP and BN; 4) historical notes and analysis of the copies of Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), Pandectae (1548) and Bibliotheca instituta et collecta (1574) safeguarded in BMSBSP and BN, highlighting their extrinsic and intrinsic aspects from their analytical bibliographical description. The copies of BMSBSP and BN have values that are expressed in two keys: 1) “universal” historical-cultural value, linked to the role of these works in bibliographical studies and in Gesnerian Studies; 2) “local” historical-cultural value, linked to the institutional context, modality and motivations of acquisition, preservation, mediation, use, control, circulation and appropriation of the copies. In the landscape of the two heritage libraries highlighted here, the Gesnerian universality - although it can be reviewed, relativized, and even tensioned in the context of the tropics - constitutes a geographical and conceptual space that includes not only the Old World, but also the New World. Indeed, the Gesnerian bibliographical works trace an intriguing and passionate historical-bibliographical thread between the 16th century polymath and the Bibliography of the Brazilian tropics.

Introducción al dossier: Estudios del libro antiguo en América Latina: perspectivas, debates y problemas

O estudo apresenta e discute a concepção, desenvolvimento e consolidação do Catálogo de Livros Antigos (CLA) da Biblioteca do Mosteiro de São Bento de São Paulo (BMSBSP), Brasil. Inicia com a contextualização da BMSBSP, fundada em 1598, e de seus livros antigos (sécs. XV-XVIII), predominantemente representados pelas áreas de Teologia, Direito Canônico, História e Filosofia. A metodologia percorrida é: 1) revisão bibliográfica sobre a temática dos livros antigos, a partir da problematização de seus conceitos e das questões que se impõem na América Latina e Caribe; 2) construção do CLA, alicerçado no mapeamento, inventário, planejamento e configuração da base de dados e organização da informação de 581 livros antigos da BMSBSP. Um dos resultados deste estudo é a sua contribuição não somente à Biblioteconomia, mas também às investigações de História do Livro, da Leitura e das Bibliotecas no Brasil, na medida em que alargam o exame da presença do livro antigo europeu no Brasil e as perspectivas da biblioteca monástica beneditina em suas dimensões históricas e patrimoniais em terras brasileiras. Concebido no contexto da cultura monástica beneditina, sob o conceito de livro antigo e sob as questões que envolvem a sua representação documentária, o CLA tem um papel não só instrumental, mas também chama a atenção para a importância da materialidade dos textos e de suas formas de organização e de mediação, que podem carregar percursos de longa duração, além de fomentar reflexões mais verticalizadas no âmbito da Bibliografia Histórica.

Segunda parte do estudo sobre De indicibus librorum - seção constituinte das Pandectae (1548) de Conrad Gesner (1516-1565) - que trata da constituição, função e uso de índices. O objetivo do trabalho é ilustrar e demonstrar a aplicação da indicilização gesneriana. A partir do tratamento histórico-bibliográfico, o estudo tem como trajeto: 1) leitura e tradução integral de De indicibus librorum (para Parte II do estudo, especificamente a tradução do fólio 21r (d3) ao fólio 22v (d4)); 2) mapeamento de alguns dos índices presentes nas Pandectae (1548, 1549); 3) discussão e combinação da fonte latina com a revisão de literatura sobre o tema, com base em Wellisch (1981), Cochetti (1984a, 1984b) e Serrai (1990). A última parte de De indicibus librorum é dedicada aos índices de bibliotecas enquanto dispositivos de ordenação e controle inventarial. Gesner, além de mencionar índices que foram empregados para preparação de Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), versa, com base no método pellikano para elaboração de índices, sobre os critérios e a estrutura dessas ferramentas. Os índices presentes nas Pandectae (1548, 1549) são refinados em função de sua composição (conexão entre termos e números dos fólios) e delineamento lógico. Em sua totalidade (fólio 19v (d) ao fólio 22v (d4)), De indicibus librorum é fonte relevante para história, teoria, prática e arte da indicialização e, igualmente, para história da organização da informação e do conhecimento no Séc. XVI. Simultaneamente, o conjunto de argumentos apresentados por Gesner antecipa e comprova, com efeito, a configuração teórico-aplicada e técnico-indicial que veio a assumir a Bibliografia como disciplina.

Microdissection techniques are very important for anatomical and functional studies focused on neuroscience, where it is often necessary microdissect specific brain areas to perform molecular or anatomical analyses. The parafilm®-assisted microdissection (PAM) was previously described and involves the microdissection of tissue sections mounted on parafilm-covered glass slides. In this work, we describe the use of the PAM method to microdissect rodent nucleus accumbens (NAc). (1) We first describe the best way to perform the mouse euthanasia and how to remove the brain. (2) Next, we describe how to prepare the slides with parafilm® that will be used to receive the brain slices. (3) Following, we describe how to handle the brain in the cryostat, how to align the hemispheres and how to identify the NAc antero-posterior limits. (4) We also describe how to perform the staining and dehydration of the slices, a critical step to facilitate the microdissection and preserve macromolecules. (5) In the final step, we describe how to identify the dorso-ventral and latero-medial limits of the NAc and, finally, how to perform the manual microdissection of the area. This is a low-cost technique that allows the researcher to specifically microdissect any brain region, from which intact RNA and proteins can be extracted to perform several molecular analyses (e.g., real-time PCR, Western blot, and RNA-seq).

Objetivo: mapear a produção científica sobre Bibliografia no Portal de Periódicos da Capes, desde o ano de 1960 a 2019, buscando-se refletir sobre os direcionamentos de pesquisa que essa disciplina vem recebendo em seu arcabouço teórico. Método: a pesquisa foi efetuada junto ao portal de periódicos da Capes, nos dias 09 e 10 de outubro de 2019, mediante unicamente a seleção de publicações (artigos) relacionadas à temática “Bibliografia”. As buscas foram editadas e personalizadas a partir do item “Buscar Assunto”, optando-se pelo refinamento no item “Busca Avançada”. O preenchimento dos campos foi limitado aos fins da investigação, utilizando-se termos específicos e operadores booleanos. Foram determinados os períodos entre 1º de janeiro de 1960 a 10 de outubro de 2019 para as buscas. A investigação apresenta abordagem qualitativa e trata-se de um estudo exploratório e descritivo executado também por meio de revisão da literatura concernente à área. Resultado: levantou-se que as publicações sobre Bibliografia dentro de um determinado período direcionam-se mais para sua funcionalidade como ferramenta de mapeamento e representação dos saberes e do conhecimento para outras áreas, ou seja, sua aplicação como produto e atividade. No entanto, a partir das duas últimas décadas, pelo menos no que se refere às publicações científicas em forma de artigos de periódicos, já se percebeu um maior aprofundamento da sua esfera como campo disciplinar científico, bem como por suas interfaces teóricas. Conclusões: este estudo limitou-se à investigação dos artigos científicos publicados nos últimos 59 anos. Nesse sentido, entende-se e sugere-se o desenvolvimento de trabalhos que tratem das publicações em diferentes formatos como de livros, bases de repertórios ou repositórios, eventos científicos, entre outras áreas de disseminação científicas e em variados períodos temporais e/ou recortes disciplinares, para preenchimento das lacunas investigativas ainda existentes. Iniciativas que fortaleceriam ainda mais o arcabouço científico da Bibliografia.

Objetivo: Mapear, apresentar e discutir a concepção, dimensão e estrutura documentária de Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), de Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), a partir de seu prefácio, denominado Epistola Nuncupatoria. Método: Sob o horizonte histórico-bibliográfico, o estudo se desenvolve por meio: 1) da leitura e tradução integral de Epistola Nuncupatoria, que ocupa o intervalo entre os fólios 2r e [7r] de Bibliotheca Universalis ; 2) da relação do texto latino da Epistola com os estudos bibliográficos gesnerianos, notadamente Serrai (1990) e Sabba (2012). Resultado: Em Epistola Nuncupatoria, Conrad Gesner expõe a concepção, dimensão e estrutura documentária de Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), uma vez que sobreleva: 1) seu alcance e objetivos; 2) seu uso por parte dos leitores; 3) perdas e destruições bibliográficas; 4) dinâmicas de produção e circulação de impressos; 5) abrangência autoral; 6) ordenação de suas fontes; 7) notícias sobre as bibliotecas pesquisadas; 8) tipologia e cobertura das fontes adotadas para sua composição. O repertório bibliográfico resulta de um longo esforço e dedicação individual, mas Gesner enfatiza que abriu caminho para que outros estudiosos pudessem transmitir os livros para a posteridade – desejo este que consolida-se nos Epitomi de Bibliotheca Universalis. Conclusões: Compreendida e lida como um conjunto de argumentos mediadores e memorialísticos, Epistola Nuncupatoria forma um rico corpus que manifesta e sintetiza a reflexão e a autoconsciência de Conrad Gesner sobre seus métodos de trabalho que, a rigor, formam o substrato do gesto e do método bibliográfico.

This paper presents the memories of the 11e Colloque international d’ISKO-France 2017. From the report of the conferences, sessions and the problematizations made throughout the event, it demonstrates the importance of Francophone thinkers to the construction of information-documentation. The experience has provided a space for exchanges between researchers from many countries, as well as highlighting the diversity of topics and approaches that are transversal to the Knowledge Organization (KO). The contributions of the colloquium should not be interpreted in a linear way, but rather in a temporal and associative way. In order to do so, it is essential for the KO to consider the historical path that precedes it in order to formulate an interdisciplinary strategy consistent with the scientific, political and institutional objectives of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO).

A distribuição da espécie Spelaeogammarus trajanoae, Crustáceo aquático da Ordem Amphipoda foi determinada em sete cavernas distribuídas no aquífero cárstico da Bacia do rio Salitre. Os crustáceos encontrados habitam exclusivamente água subterrânea. Essa distribuição localizada pode sugerir uma dispersão na direção do fluxo dentro do aquífero. Essa fauna que é restrita as águas subterrâneas podem ser ferramentas uteis para traçar caminhos do fluxo sem a necessidade do uso de corantes.

Introdução: Características anatômicas distintas e espectros cinéticos variados determinam padrões de contração da musculatura frontal peculiares a cada pessoa.Objetivo: Identificar e classificar os padrões de contração da musculatura frontal depacientes que procuraram atendimento para tratamento de rugas frontais.Métodos: Análise retrospectiva de fotografias de 83 pacientes. O padrão de contraçãomuscular foi classificado de acordo com a área hipercinética predominante, observada nafotografia em contração máxima do músculo frontal.Resultados: Foram identificados três padrões de contração: total, medial e lateral. Opadrão total foi observado em 50,6% dos casos.As rítides horizontais presentes no centroda fronte avançam lateralmente além da linha mediopupilar, até o final da cauda dassobrancelhas. O padrão medial foi observado em 25,3% dos casos.As rítides horizontaisconcentram-se na região central da fronte, contidas predominantemente entre as linhasmediopupilares. O padrão lateral foi observado em 24% dos casos.As rítides horizontaispredominam nas laterais da fronte, a maioria ocorrendo após a linha mediopupilar.Conclusões: A identificação e classificação dos padrões de contração do músculo frontalpermitem avaliação mais individualizada de cada paciente, o que é um dos pilares maisimportantes para um plano terapêutico bem-sucedido.

Background: More than 77% of stroke survivors have upper limb dysfunction. The scientific evidence for interventions in upper limb rehabilitation in stroke has shown variable results. To improve health care treatments in this domain it is needed to know what modalities are actually being used by physiotherapists. Methods: A national web-based survey focused in characterizing the profile of Portuguese physiotherapists working in post-stroke upper limb rehabilitation was conducted in 237 health institutions (n= 462 physiotherapists). The recruitment was conducted from August to December 2014. Analytic and descriptive analysis were used. Results: A total of 179 physiotherapists from 64 different locations from Portugal answered the survey, with a rate of response of 38.7%. The average age of respondents was 29.25±6.4 years old and predominantly finished the graduation or bachelor degree between 2001 and 2010. More than half hadn´t carried out any specialization in neurologic rehabilitation area. The top 5 modalities most used in the rehabilitation of upper limb in acute stroke are Goal Oriented Tasks (93.4% n=141), Motor Learning (89.4% n=135), Passive Mobilization (88.7% n=134), Task Repetition (87.4% n=132) and Bobath/Neurodevelopmental Therapy (86.9% n=131). Conclusions: The main modalities used for physiotherapists in upper limb rehabilitation in acute stroke have sparse levels of evidence. It is important to alert teachers, formers, physiotherapists and students for interventions with supported scientific results.

Resumo Parte da narrativa sobre as comemorações em torno dos 500 anos de nascimento de Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), com ênfase nas experiências vividas no International Congress Conrad Gessner, realizado em junho de 2016 em Zurique, Suíça. No contexto deste fórum de especialistas, identifica o perfil dos Estudos Gesnerianos, com destaque para as pesquisas ligadas à faceta bibliográfica do polímata suíço. A partir das celebrações de 2016, realiza um percurso histórico-retrospectivo ao Séc. XVI para situar e discutir, de forma preliminar, dois aspectos subjacentes ao gesto bibliográfico Gesneriano: método e implicações epistemológicas. Conclui que dimensão histórico-interpretativa da informação, que perpassa pelo gesto e método bibliográfico Gesneriano, não pode ser negligenciada para uma compreensão retrospectiva, crítica e ao mesmo tempo atual do campo informacional.

Background: Mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit (ICU) is a life‐saving technique for patients with acute respiratory failure, but is also associated with a high incidence of complications in the injured lung. Currently, there is no widely used monitoring technique to guide the ventilator setting to facilitate a precision medicine approach or to provide a real‐time alert for developing adverse pulmonary conditions. Conventional ultrasound has been used as a thoracic bedside technology, but the lack of signal penetration into lung tissue results in images that often contain more information in their artifacts than in the images themselves. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to using traditional ultrasound in the ICU is the need for highly skilled technicians to perform the data collection. In contrast, low‐frequency ultrasound (50–500 kHz) has been shown to penetrate the lung, and can detect air trapping in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Purpose: Here, we present a method of collecting low‐frequency ultrasound computed tomographic (USCT) data in vivo on a mechanically ventilated porcine model and computing tomographic reconstructions of airflow during tidal breathing and induced lung injuries. We evaluate the ability of the novel low‐frequency USCT system to image regional changes in sound speed in the thorax due to changes in airflow during tidal breathing and induced lung injuries. This represents the first study of low‐frequency tomographic ultrasound imaging in vivo and the first to produce tomographic images of ventilatory changes in vivo. Methods: USCT and computed tomography (CT) scan data were collected alternately on a mechanically ventilated Landrace pig weighing approximately 75 kg during tidal breathing, induced pneumothorax, atelectasis, and pleural effusion. The pneumothorax was induced by injecting air through a 5 mm thick intrathoracic tube inserted in the 8th posterior intercostal space. After removing the air, atelectasis was induced by ventilating the animal with a high concentration of oxygen and low tidal volumes. The pleural effusion was induced by injecting a saline solution through the tube. The USCT data were collected at 125 kHz using the USCT low‐frequency ultrasound tomography (LUFT) system on a transducer belt placed around the animal's thorax. Tomographic reconstructions were computed from the USCT data using a regularized refraction‐corrected Gauss‐Newton‐based time‐of‐flight reconstruction algorithm. Results: Cyclic changes in computed lung area during tidal breathing were demonstrated to agree with the respiratory rate on the mechanical ventilator. Reconstructed images computed at time steps during the procedure demonstrate regional changes consistent with what would be expected during the induced lung injury. No ground truth was available for images during the procedures since CT scans could only be taken before and after each established lung injury. Conclusions: In this work, we have demonstrated in the first in vivo study using a mechanically ventilated porcine animal model that low‐frequency ultrasound tomography has the ability to image regional changes in sound speed in the thorax corresponding to changes in airflow during tidal breathing and induced lung injury. The results show promise for using low‐frequency USCT as a bedside imaging technique in the future for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The high productivity of Eucalyptus spp. forest plantations is mainly due to advances in silvicultural techniques and genetic improvement associated with the potential that many species of the genus have for vegetative propagation. However, long reproduction cycles for forest species pose significant challenges for genetic progress via traditional breeding programs. Furthermore, there is often poor correlation between individual (seedling) performance in initial (progeny trials) and final (clonal trials) stages of the breeding program. In this scenario, cloned progeny trials (CPT) offer an alternative to accelerate the eucalypt clone selection pipeline, combining progeny and clonal trials in a single experiment. CPT has the potential to speed up the evaluation process and increase its efficiency by developing new commercial genotypes that were tested as clones from the initial stage of the breeding program. Thus, this study aims to assess the potential of CPT to accelerate eucalypt clone selection programs by estimating the genetic parameters, analyzing responses to selection, and predicting the adequate number of ramets to be used in CPT of Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis. The results show that when the number of ramets per progeny was decreased from five to one there was a reduction in the estimates of broad-sense heritability and accuracy. However, three ramets/progeny can be used without significant reductions in these estimates. CPT accelerates clonal selection by combining progeny and clonal trial methodologies, enabling an evaluation of performance as both progeny and clone. This capacity is very important for vegetatively propagated crop species such as Eucalyptus. Integrating CPT with SNP markers can offer an alternative to shorten the tree clone selection pipeline, better estimate and decompose the genetic variance components, and improve the correlation between initial and final performance for selected genotypes. This study confirms the potential of CPT to improve selection processes and accelerate genetic gains in the eucalypt clone selection pipeline.
