Eversince its establishment, ASEAN has adopted a strict approach in tackling regional issues known as the ASEAN WAY including its non-intervention principle. In that regard, it requires consensus from all ASEAN member states without exception, no matter how long it takes before such problems can be addressed through ASEAN as a regional organization. If consensus is unfeasible, the problems will remain unresolved. Issues inflicting Rohingya ethnic, South China Sea, etc., are prime examples on ASEAN’s weakness as an institution. Compared to the European Union as a Supranational Organization, it has a more systematic and flexible approach in solving regional issues. The purpose of this research is to analyze to what extent EU law is applicable within ASEAN’s organizational structure to ensure a robust ASEAN integration so that one day it can achieve the status of a supranational organization like the European Union. This research method uses a normative juridical approach by analyzing the principles and instruments of international law applicable within ASEAN organizational structure, one of which is the ASEAN CHARTER as a legal basis that applies for all ASEAN member states, and further to what extent EU Law (EU LAW) is applicable within ASEAN organizational structure. The conclusion in this study is enhancing ASEAN's effectiveness in tackling regional issues and quickly adapting to global challenges such as the European Union, ASEAN countries must ignore differences and concentrate on restructuring ASEAN by redefining ASEAN Way and the Non-Intervention Principle for stronger regional integration and stability.

The differentially pumped rare-gas filter at the end of the VUV beamline of the Swiss Light Source has been adapted to house a windowless absorption cell for gases. Absorption spectra can be recorded from 7 eV to up to 21 eV photon energies routinely, as shown by a new water and nitrous oxide absorption spectrum. By and large, the spectra agree with previously published ones both in terms of resonance energies and absorption cross sections, but that of N2O exhibits a small shift in the {\tilde{\bf D}} band and tentative fine structures that have not yet been fully described. This setup will facilitate the measurement of absorption spectra in the VUV above the absorption edge of LiF and MgF2 windows. It will also allow us to carry out condensed-phase measurements on thin liquid sheets and solid films. Further development options are discussed, including the recording of temperature-dependent absorption spectra, a stationary gas cell for calibration measurements, and the improvement of the photon energy resolution.

The ability to freely control the polarization of X-rays enables measurement techniques relying on circular or linear dichroism, which have become indispensable tools for characterizing the properties of chiral molecules or magnetic structures. Therefore, the demand for polarization control in X-ray free-electron lasers is increasing to enable polarization-sensitive dynamical studies on ultrafast time scales. The soft X-ray branch Athos of SwissFEL was designed with the aim of providing freely adjustable and arbitrary polarization by building its undulator solely from modules of the novel Apple X type. In this paper, the magnetic model of the linear inclined and circular Apple X polarization schemes are studied. The polarization is characterized by measuring the angular electron emission distributions of helium for various polarizations using cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy. The generation of fully linear polarized light of arbitrary angle, as well as elliptical polarizations of varying degree, are demonstrated.

Abstract Monitoring yellow fever in non-human primates (NHPs) is an early warning system for sylvatic yellow fever outbreaks, aiding in preventing human cases. However, current diagnostic tests for this disease, primarily relying on RT-qPCR, are complex and costly. Therefore, there is a critical need for simpler and more cost-effective methods to detect yellow fever virus (YFV) infection in NHPs, enabling early identification of viral circulation. In this study, an RT-LAMP assay for detecting YFV in NHP samples was developed and validated. Two sets of RT-LAMP primers targeting the YFV NS5 and E genes were designed and tested together with a third primer set to the NS1 locus using NHP tissue samples from Southern Brazil. The results were visualized by colorimetry and compared to the RT-qPCR test. Standardization and validation of the RT-LAMP assay demonstrated 100% sensitivity and specificity compared to RT-qPCR, with a detection limit of 12 PFU/mL. Additionally, the cross-reactivity test with other flaviviruses confirmed a specificity of 100%. Our newly developed RT-LAMP diagnostic test for YFV in NHP samples will significantly contribute to yellow fever monitoring efforts, providing a simpler and more accessible method for viral early detection. This advancement holds promise for enhancing surveillance and ultimately preventing the spread of yellow fever.

Abstract The integration of aquaculture and agriculture in arid and semi‐arid environments is crucial for maximizing water and land productivity, especially considering the increasing global water scarcity and the simultaneous use of water for crop and fish production. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the effects of fish effluent on the growth, yield parameters, and yield of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). The experiment involved 13 fertilization treatments, including three types of irrigation water (river water—control, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African sharp‐toothed catfish (Clarias gariepinus), four fertilizers (poultry, cattle, and sheep manures at 10 t ha−1), recommended rate of inorganic fertilizer (150 kg ha−1 of NPK 6‐20‐10), and six mixed treatments with fish effluent and 50% of the applied rate of manure alone (5 t ha−1). The combined use of C. gariepinus effluent + 50% poultry manure significantly increased stem diameter, nodules per plant, pods per plant, and seed yield compared to NPK treatments. The shortest days to reach 50% flowering were obtained with the effluent of O. niloticus + 50% sheep manure, C. gariepinus/O. niloticus + 50% poultry manure, and 10 t ha−1 poultry manure. However, fertilization treatments did not significantly influence the number of branches, pod and root length, number of pods per plant, 100‐seed weight, and leaf chlorophyll concentrations. This study suggests that fish effluents, when combined with manure, can improve plant growth and seed yield, providing a cost‐effective alternative to inorganic fertilizers for smallholder farmers.

Drought stress is considered a limiting factor during the early growth stages of sorghum. An experiment was conducted under field conditions during the fall seasons of 2017 and 2018. The objective was to improve the growth of sorghum seedlings and their chemical properties to tolerate drought stress. Three variables were investigated: first factor cultivars (Inqath, Rabeh, and Buhoth70), second factor seed priming (primed and unprimed seed). Seeds were primed by soaking for 12 hours in a solution containing 300 mg L−1 + 70 mg L−1 of gibberellic (GA3) and salicylic (SA) acids, respectively, and third factor drought stress represented by the irrigation intervals (irrigation every 2, 4, and 6 days) through calculated quantities to deliver moisture content to the field capacity (100%) at each irrigation. A randomized complete block design with four replications was used. The results showed that cultivars varied in their ability to tolerate drought stress, and seed priming improved their performance to tolerate drought stress compared to unprimed seed in both seasons by giving the highest values of plant height, leaf area, dry seedling weight, and content of chlorophyll, carbohydrate, and proline in leaves. Reducing irrigation intervals led to an increase in the values of the traits studied, except proline content in leaves, which increased as long as irrigation intervals increased. The interaction between priming treatments and irrigation intervals was significant for most of the studied traits. It can be concluded that priming has improved seed performance's ability to tolerate drought stress compared to unprimed seed.

We previously described an in vitro single-chain fragment (scFv) library platform originally designed to generate antibodies with excellent developability properties. The platform design was based on the use of clinical antibodies as scaffolds into which replicated natural complementarity-determining regions purged of sequence liabilities were inserted, and the use of phage and yeast display to carry out antibody selection. In addition to being developable, antibodies generated using our platform were extremely diverse, with most campaigns yielding sub-nanomolar binders. Here, we describe a platform advancement that incorporates Fab phage display followed by single-chain antibody-binding fragment Fab (scFab) yeast display. The scFab single-gene format provides balanced expression of light and heavy chains, with enhanced conversion to IgG, thereby combining the advantages of scFvs and Fabs. A meticulously engineered, quality-controlled Fab phage library was created using design principles similar to those used to create the scFv library. A diverse panel of binding scFabs, with high conversion efficiency to IgG, was isolated against two targets. This study highlights the compatibility of phage and yeast display with a Fab semi-synthetic library design, offering an efficient approach to generate drug-like antibodies directly, facilitating their conversion to potential therapeutic candidates.

Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are becoming the standard of care for recurrent and metastatic cancer. Opioids, the primary treatment for cancer-related pain, are immunosuppressive raising concerns about their potential to interfere with the efficacy of ICIs. We hypothesize that exogenous opioids given for analgesia suppress antitumor immunity via T cell-mediated mu opioid receptor 1 (OPRM1) signaling.Methods In silico bioinformatics were used to assess OPRM1 receptor expression on tumor-infiltrating immune cells in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and across different cancer types. A syngeneic orthotopic mouse model of oral squamous cell carcinoma was used to study the impact of morphine and OPRM1 antagonism on tumor-infiltrating immune cells, tumor growth and antitumor efficacy of anti-Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) monoclonal antibody treatment.Results In patients with HNSCC, OPRM1 expression was most abundant in CD8+ T cells, particularly in patients who had not been prescribed opioids prior to resection and exhibited increased expression of exhaustion markers. Exogenous morphine treatment in tumor-bearing mice reduced CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell infiltration and subsequently anti-PD1 ICI efficacy. Peripherally acting mu opioid receptor antagonism, when administered in the adjunctive setting, was able to block morphine-induced immunosuppression and recover the antitumor efficacy of anti-PD1.Conclusions These findings suggest that morphine acts via a peripheral OPRM1-mediated mechanism to suppress CD8+ T cells, thereby fostering a pro-tumor-impaired immune response. Importantly, peripherally-restricted OPRM1 antagonism can effectively block this morphine-induced immunosuppression while still allowing for centrally-mediated analgesia, indicating a potential therapeutic strategy for mitigating the adverse effects of opioid pain relief in cancer treatment.

The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, causes significant economic losses to the cattle industry. Tick control is predominately achieved via pesticide applications. However, alternative control methods such as vaccines are needed due to the tick's capacity to quickly develop pesticide resistance and to combat tick-borne diseases. We used an in silico reverse vaccinology approach to evaluate and rank open reading frames (ORFs) from the tick's transcriptome for their potential use as anti-R. microplus vaccine antigens. We manually annotated the 200 highest ranked antigens and selected 10 transcript ORFs as vaccine antigen candidates for expression in Pichia pastoris or insect cells. Six of the ten candidate antigens could be successfully expressed and purified in vitro as recombinant proteins with > 1 mg quantity. RT-PCR confirmed the expression of all six transcripts in tick RNA. However, only three of the six transcripts' corresponding ORFs could be confirmed as present in tick tissue protein extracts. Only four of the six vaccine candidate antigens were successfully expressed and purified in sufficient quantity (> 10 mg) for immunogenicity and efficacy trials in cattle. These four were designated BI-TS002, BI-TS004, BI-TS008, and BI-TS009 and sufficient annotation existed that showed sequence similarity to serine‑rich adhesin for platelets, glycine-rich cell wall structural membrane protein, SWM-1 tick serine protease inhibitor, and venom-like dermonecrotic toxins from ticks and spiders, respectively. Cattle immunized with BI-TS004, BI-TS008 and BI-TS009 yielded a statistically significant difference in antibody response post-immunization. This difference was noted on Days 42, 56, 70, and 84 post-immunization for BI-TS008 and BI-TS009, but only on Day 56 for BI-TS004. BI-TS008 and BI-TS009, were formulated with adjuvant and cattle stall tests conducted over a 175 day period to evaluate efficacy against R. microplus infestations. Both an adjuvant only negative control group and a positive control group using the commercially available GAVAC anti-tick vaccine were used. Efficacy was determined by comparing number of engorged adult female ticks, total egg mass weight, and egg hatchability produced from the immunized group to corresponding data from the adjuvant only negative control group. Thus, effects on engorged adult tick number, reproductive capacity, and fertility were measured. Both initial (designated Phase 1 and calculated from tick collections of Days 60–94 days post-first immunization) and long-term (designated Phase 2 and calculated from tick collections of Days 152–175 post-first immunization) efficacies were determined. The overall Phase 1 trial efficacies of BI-TS008, BI-TS009, and GAVAC were 68.3 %, 48.5 %, and 70.7 %, respectively. The overall Phase 2 trial efficacies of BI-TS008, BI-TS009, and GAVAC were 64.4 %, -30.1 %, and 45.1 %, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to assess the safe and effective use of the OBI and Instructions for Use (IFU) by patients with HF, caregivers, and healthcare practitioners (HCPs).Methods: Sixty participants (patients, n=30; caregivers, n=15; HCPs, n=15) were evaluated on completion of OBI use tasks and IFU knowledge tasks in a simulated use environment. Fifteen of the patients received OBI/IFU training before evaluation.Results: Overall, 893/900 (99.2%) use tasks and 2211/2220 (99.6%) knowledge tasks were completed successfully, without differences due to training. The most common (n=6) use error was failure to wipe skin or cartridge tip with an alcohol wipe. Errors were due to forgetfulness/misinterpretation rather than IFU clarity.Conclusion: The subcutaneous furosemide OBI can be safely and effectively used by patients, caregivers, and HCPs, regardless of training.Keywords: heart failure, furosemide, subcutaneous furosemide, on-body infusor, human factors

ABSTRACT Soil fertility management is essential to sustain agricultural production in smallholder farming systems. An experiment was carried out to assess the viability of the combined use of compost and inorganic fertilizers as an alternative to conventional inorganic fertilization under greenhouse conditions. The 10 treatments, arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six replications, consisted of a control, conventional mineral fertilization (150 kg NPK ha−1), composts added to the soil alone (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 t ha−1), and their combination with 50% of recommended rate of inorganic fertilizers (75 kg NPK ha−1). Application of 7.5 t ha−1 of compost and 50% of the recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (75 kg NPK ha−1) gave the significantly highest seed yield, corresponding to a 30% increase over NPK‐fertilized plants. The combined application of 2.5 or 10 t ha−1 compost with 75 kg NPK ha−1 increased plant height by 38% compared with the NPK treatment. Additionally, stem diameter increased by 53% when 5 t ha−1 of compost and 75 kg NPK ha−1 were mixed. As expected, control plants produced the most nodules (108), 85% more than inorganic fertilization. Plants fertilized with 7.5 or 10 t ha−1 of compost and 75 kg NPK ha−1 produced 17% more pods, seeds per pod, and seeds per plant than NPK treatments. However, fertilization treatments had no significant effects on cowpea fresh and dry biomass or SPAD values. The results reveal that combining compost with inorganic fertilizer reduced synthetic fertilization by 50%, while producing growth and yields comparable to, or even higher than, recommended inorganic fertilization. This experiment demonstrated that integrated soil fertility management can be used as an alternative to the use of inorganic fertilizers in cowpea cultivation.

Abstract Serum creatinine levels are insensitive to real-time changes in kidney function or injury. There is a growing interest in assessing kidney injury by measuring biomarkers in body fluid. From our previous studies, we identified and reported three urinary biomarkers namely Uromodulin (UMOD), Osteopontin (OPN), and Interleukin-9 (IL-9) to be associated with kidney health. The availability of a rapid point-of-care test for these urinary biomarkers will potentially accelerate its applicability and accessibility. In this study, we aimed to develop novel lateral flow device (LFD) for UMOD, OPN and IL-9. We tested paired antibodies using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay wherein we observed functionality only for UMOD and OPN and not for IL-9. A conjugation buffer pH of 7.8 and 8.5 was found suitable at a detection antibody concentration of 15 µg/mL for LFD development. The developed LFDs were found to quantitatively measure UMOD standard (LLOD of 80,000 pg/mL) and OPN standard (LLOD of 8600 pg/mL) respectively. The LFD was also able to measure human urinary UMOD and OPN with a percent CV of 12.12 and 5.23 respectively.

Abstract In 2019 and 2020, we investigated the individual and combined effects of two biofertilizers (manure tea and bioinoculant) and one humic acid (HA) product on cannabis biochemical and physiological parameters and soil CO2 evolution under outdoor conditions. Our hypothesis was that HA would increase the microbial activity in the biofertilizers and synergy of both compounds would promote better plant performance and stimulate soil microbial activity. In 2020, the individual and combined application of biofertilizers and HA increased cannabis height, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic efficiency, aboveground biomass, and bucked biomass by 105, 52, 43, 122, and 117%, respectively. Impacts were greater under suboptimal growing conditions caused by planting delay experienced in 2020. In 2019, planting date occurred in-between the most favorable period and chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency were the only parameters influenced by the application of biostimulants. The discrepancies between the two growing seasons reinforce the evidence of other studies that biostimulants efficacy is maximized under stress conditions. This study could not conclusively confirm that the combined use of biofertilizer + HA is a superior practice since affected plant parameters did not differ from application of the compounds singly. Similarly, only one biofertilizer + HA treatment increased soil microbial activity. More research is needed to define optimum rates and combinations of biofertilizer and stimulants for cannabis.

Current technologies could potentially solve many of the urban problems in today’s cities. Many cities already possess cameras, drones, thermometers, pollution air gauges, and other sensors. However, most of these have been designated for use in individual domains within City Hall, creating a maze of individual data domains that cannot connect to each other. This jumble of domains and stakeholders prevents collaboration and transparency. Cities need an integrated system in which data and dashboards can be shared by city administrators to better deal with urban problems that involve several sectors and to improve oversight. This paper presents a model of an integrative system to manage classes of problems within one administrative municipal domain. Our model contains the cyber-physical system’s elements: the physical object, the sensors and electronic devices attached to it, a database of collected problems, code running on the devices or remotely, and the human. We tested the model by using it on the recurring problem of potholes in city streets. An AI model for identifying potholes was integrated into applications available to citizens and operators so that they can feed the municipal system with images and the locations of potholes using their cell phone camera. Preliminary results indicate that these sensors can detect potholes with an accuracy of 91% and 99%, depending on the detection equipment used. In addition, the dashboards provide the manager and the citizen with a transparent view of the problems’ progress and support for their correct address.

Obesity is reported to be strongly associated with low levels of adiponectin, which may be involved in metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and cancer cell proliferation. Meanwhile, physical exercise has been reported to increase adiponectin levels and decrease insulin resistance in obese individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to prove the effects of four weeks of moderate-intensity combination exercise (aerobic and resistance) on increasing adiponectin levels, skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and decreasing fat mass (FM) in obese women. A total of 14 obese adolescent women aged 20-24 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 27.5-36.5 kg/m2 (based on Asia-Pacific BMI classification) were selected as research subjects and divided into two intervention groups: control (CON) and moderate-intensity combination exercise (MCE) groups. The ELISA kit method was used to analyze pre- and post-exercise adiponectin levels, while the mBCA 554 seca was used to measure BMI, FM, and SMM. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent samples t-test with a 5% significance level. The data showed ∆-BMI between CON and MCE (0.54±0.99 vs -1.31±0.19 kg/m2; p = 0.001), ∆-FM (1.56±3.89 vs -3.60±1.16 kg; p = 0.006), ∆-SMM (-0.85±1.91 vs 3.61±0.74 kg; p = 0.001), ∆-Adiponectin (0.55±2.39 vs 15.45±6.21 ng/mL; p = 0.001). The results demonstrate that a 4-week moderate-intensity combination exercise intervention effectively increases adiponectin levels and skeletal muscle mass and reduces body mass index and fat mass in obese women. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar a mais recente proposta do Comitê Olímpico Internacional para o engajamento da juventude em esportes, os Youth Olympic Games – YOG. Esta é uma pesquisa de revisão bibliográfica que utilizou como fonte de consulta as bases Google Acadêmico, Portal de Busca Integrada – PBI da Universidade de São Paulo e Olympic World Library, vinculada ao Comitê Olímpico Internacional. Os achados indicaram que os atletas têm a atenção voltada, principalmente, para as atividades esportivas ou para aquelas atividades que tenham impacto direto sobre a melhoria de sua performance. Atletas de diferentes continentes manifestaram percepções singulares sobre a participação nos YOG, que foram do desafio da conciliação da carreira de estudante e atleta ao desejo de sair do país para ampliar as chances esportivas. Esta pesquisa não teve a pretensão de chegar a uma conclusão sobre o impacto desse evento nos atletas e espectadores, mas de perceber, por meio da diversidade dos apontamentos, a contribuição dos YOG para o cenário esportivo mundial. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) represent first-line standard of care in unresectable EGFR mutation-positive (EGFRm+) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, 10–20% of patients with EGFRm+ NSCLC have uncommon EGFR variants, defined as mutations other than L858R substitutions or exon 19 deletions. NSCLC harboring uncommon EGFR mutations may demonstrate lower sensitivity to targeted agents than NSCLC with L858R or exon 19 deletion mutations. Prospective clinical trial data in patients with NSCLC uncommon EGFR mutations are lacking. Afatinib is a second-generation TKI and the only Food and Drug Administration-approved drug for some of the more prevalent uncommon EGFR mutations. We present a series of seven case reports describing clinical outcomes in afatinib-treated patients with NSCLC harboring a diverse range of extremely rare mutations with or without co-mutations affecting other genes. EGFR alterations included compound mutations, P-loop αC-helix compressing mutations, and novel substitution mutations. We also present a case with NSCLC harboring a novel EGFR::CCDC6 gene fusion. Overall, the patients responded well to afatinib, including radiologic partial responses in six patients during treatment. Responses were durable for three patients. The cases presented are in line with a growing body of clinical and preclinical evidence that indicating that NSCLC with various uncommon EGFR mutations, with or without co-mutations, may be sensitive to afatinib.

Background There are increasing reports of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), as an adverse event of an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) but postmarket data on the incidence of this remains scarce. This study sought to conduct a comprehensive review of GBS events arising as a secondary outcome of ICI treatments in real-world patients, using the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).Methods Data covering the period from the third quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2023 were extracted from the FAERS database. GBS cases (associated with the usage of avelumab, atezolizumab, ipilimumab, nivolumab and pembrolizumab) were subjected to disproportionality analysis to detect potential signals.Results A total of 2208 reports of GBS were identified within the FAERS database, with 242 of these cases (10.9%) being associated with ICIs. All five drugs exhibited a disproportionality in the reporting of adverse events, with the highest observed for avelumab (reporting OR, ROR: 29.8), followed by atezolizumab (ROR: 17.0), ipilimumab (ROR: 16.0), pembrolizumab (ROR: 11.9) and nivolumab (ROR: 8.2).Conclusion These checkpoint inhibitors are associated with a statistically significant disproportionate number of reports of GBS as an adverse event, with avelumab being the ICI with the highest association. The present pharmacovigilance study serves as a valuable tool, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced perspective on GBS associated with ICIs. This study contributes to a deeper comprehension of this rare adverse drug effect.

Government software projects face challenges due to requirement volatility, dynamic environments, and multiple stakeholders. This study examines these challenges through a case study of the Brazilian National Textbook Program (PNLD) software platform. We analyze qualitative and quantitative data from user stories, support tickets, and stakeholder interviews to assess the impact of stakeholder centralization on requirement stability and development efficiency. Our findings indicate that reducing the number of stakeholders significantly decreases volatility and improves project alignment and communication. The data shows enhanced issue resolution efficiency, especially in backend operations and post-centralization. We also identify key themes related to communication, coordination, and agile methodologies that influence project outcomes. Based on these insights, we propose guidelines and best practices to optimize software development in dynamic, multi-stakeholder environments. These recommendations highlight the importance of streamlined stakeholder roles, robust communication channels, and balanced agile practices. This research offers practical strategies for improving the stability and efficiency of government software projects.

The inhalation-exhalation (I:E) ratio, known to be an indicator of respiratory disease, is the ratio between the inhalation phase and exhalation phase of each breath. Here, we report on results from a non-contact monitoring method for the determination of the I:E ratio. This employs a depth sensing camera system that requires no sensors to be physically attached to the patient. A range of I:E ratios from 0.3 to 1.0 over a range of respiratory rates from 4 to 40 breaths/min were generated by healthy volunteers, producing a total of 3,882 separate breaths for analysis. Depth information was acquired using an Intel D415 RealSense camera placed at 1.1 m from the subjects’ torso. This data was processed in real-time to extract depth changes within the subjects’ torso region corresponding to respiratory activity. This was further converted into a respiratory signal from which the I:E ratio was determined (I:E $_{\mathrm {depth}}$ ). I:Edepth was compared to spirometer data (I:E $_{\mathrm {spiro}}$ ). A Bland Altman analysis produced a mean bias of –0.004, with limits of agreement [–0.234, 0.227]. A linear regression analysis produced a line of best fit given by I:E $_{\mathrm {depth}} = 1.004\times $ I:Espiro – 0.006, with 95% confidence intervals for the slope [0.988, 1.019] and intercept [–0.017, 0.004]. We have demonstrated the viability of a non-contact monitoring method for determining the I:E ratio on healthy subjects breathing without mechanical support. This measure may be useful in monitoring the deterioration in respiratory status and/or response to therapy within the patient population. Clinical and Translational Impact Statement - The I:E ratio is an indicator of disease severity in COPD and asthma. Non-contact continuous monitoring of I:E ratio will offer the clinician a powerful new tool for respiratory monitoring

Abstract Machine learning (ML) techniques have gained popularity in the neuroimaging field due to their potential for classifying neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the diagnostic predictive power of the existing algorithms has been limited by small sample sizes, lack of representativeness, data leakage, and/or overfitting. Here, we overcome these limitations with the largest multi-site sample size to date (N = 5365) to provide a generalizable ML classification benchmark of major depressive disorder (MDD) using shallow linear and non-linear models. Leveraging brain measures from standardized ENIGMA analysis pipelines in FreeSurfer, we were able to classify MDD versus healthy controls (HC) with a balanced accuracy of around 62%. But after harmonizing the data, e.g., using ComBat, the balanced accuracy dropped to approximately 52%. Accuracy results close to random chance levels were also observed in stratified groups according to age of onset, antidepressant use, number of episodes and sex. Future studies incorporating higher dimensional brain imaging/phenotype features, and/or using more advanced machine and deep learning methods may yield more encouraging prospects.

A large number of vision sensors has been proposed for enabling self-driving vehicles to perceive their surroundings. Among them, Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) presents the unique advantage of acquiring a high resolution 3D representation of the vehicle surroundings, in the form of point clouds, which enables accurate 3D object detection. The success of the first (and current) generation LiDARs has motivated the development of a second generation of this sensor, now based on coherent detection. Second generation LiDARs thus enable not only estimating radial distance, but also radial velocity for each point of the point cloud. The objective of this work is to investigate which benefits can be obtained by considering such an additional information – radial velocity – in 3D object detection. Results show that considering object velocity is particularly helpful in objects represented by a small number of points.

Objectives: To analyze the impact of exercise under hypoxic exposure versus normoxic exposure on blood glucose level, insulin level, and insulin sensitivity in people at risk of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: We systematically performed electronic searching on PubMed, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Scopus. Primary studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using Revman 5.4.1. Results: Nine randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis. We found that physical exercise under hypoxic exposure had no significant effect on improving blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and insulin sensitivity in the elderly and sedentary people compared to normoxic condition. However, physical exercise during hypoxic exposure had a significant effect on lowering blood glucose levels in overweight/obese individuals (pooled Standardized Mean Difference = 0.29; 95% confidence interval = 0.01–0.57; P = 0.04). Conclusions: Exercising under hypoxic exposure can be an alternative strategy for reducing blood glucose levels in overweight/obese people. Nevertheless, in other populations at risk of T2DM, exercising in hypoxic conditions gives similar results to normoxic conditions.

The evolution of wireless communications technologies is fostering new Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, sustainable IoT development requires new batteryless and eco-friendly device designs, contributing to cost reduction, lower maintenance, and less environmental damage compared to typical battery-powered IoT. Inspired by such goals, this paper presents a behavioral modeling of a radio frequency wireless power transfer (WPT) system for batteryless IoT applications. We consider a supercapacitor as the energy storage element and analytically describe its behavior during energy harvesting as well as during information transmission. To validate our proposed model, we compare it with measurement results from the literature, showing perfect agreement. Furthermore, we also compare the proposed model with the state-of-the-art, highlighting important differences when considering the effect of the elements preceding and succeeding the supercapacitor into the recharging time, which have critical implications in the design of charging and transmission cycles.

Support tools that monitor software application processes are required to identify, measure, and assess their performance and resolve any anomalies that impede their full functionality. Similarly, applications that use blockchain technology require analysis and monitoring tools for the resources and functionality provided by their smart contracts. This paper presents a computational tool that monitors hardware resources and evaluates transaction processing requests in blockchain networks. The solution presented here is called MonitorChain, and it has software components that allow the connection with different blockchain networks, the configuration of the workload, the monitoring of consumed hardware resources, and the evaluation of requests processed over blockchain networks. The effectiveness and adaptability of MonitorChain were validated through extensive evaluations across various blockchain environments, including public networks like Ethereum, Avalanche, and Fantom, as well as a private network using Hyperledger Fabric, with a consistent data load of 10,000 transactions. Additionally, through interviews with experienced software developers, we gathered feedback that led to further refinements and identified opportunities for future enhancements. The results demonstrated MonitorChain’s capability to provide critical insights into blockchain applications’ performance, scalability, and efficiency. MonitorChain advances the field compared to existing solutions by offering enhanced support for diverse networks, customizable workloads, and real-time data visualization, contributing significantly to the blockchain monitoring landscape.

Effective requirements elicitation and validation are crucial for developing healthcare applications that genuinely meet the needs of end users. This study investigates the role of healthcare professionals in these processes and explores the application of openEHR archetypes to enhance stakeholder engagement. A comprehensive literature review identified significant gaps in the participation of domain experts throughout the software development lifecycle. A thematic analysis of survey responses from healthcare professionals revealed vital challenges they face with existing software applications. Statistical analyses confirmed the limited involvement of these professionals, while interviews with software engineers provided insights into the practical implications of integrating archetypes into development processes. Based on these findings, a set of good practices is proposed to facilitate effective requirements elicitation and validation through the active involvement of healthcare professionals. Utilizing openEHR archetypes, these practices aim to bridge the gap between technical specifications and clinical needs, ultimately leading to the development of more user-centered healthcare software solutions. This study highlights the importance of fostering collaboration between developers and domain experts to enhance the quality and usability of healthcare applications, paving the way for improved patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

Abstract Background The sand flea Tunga penetrans is one of the agents of tungiasis, an important parasitic skin disease affecting humans and several mammalian species. Tungiasis is mainly observed in disadvantaged rural and peripheral urban communities in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. The dog is a major reservoir of Tunga fleas. Hematophagous adult female Tunga spp. embed and grow in their host’s epidermis and cause cutaneous inflammatory disorders. NexGard Spectra® is an orally administered endectocide for dogs, a co-formulation of the isoxazoline afoxolaner and the macrocyclic lactone milbemycin oxime. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of this product against canine tungiasis. Methods A blinded, negative-controlled field trial was conducted in a Brazilian community known to be highly endemic for tungiasis. Sixty-six dogs naturally infected with live T. penetrans were randomly allocated to a treated group (44 dogs) and an untreated control group (22 dogs). In a first phase, dogs from the treated group were treated on days 0, 30, and 60. Efficacy was evaluated on the basis of the macroscopic parasitic skin lesions (Fortaleza classification) on days 7, 14, 21, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90. In a second phase, to evaluate natural reinfections, all dogs were treated on day 90 and evaluated every 2 weeks thereafter until at least 30% of dogs were infected with live sand fleas. Results During the first phase, efficacy (reduction in live sand fleas) of 92.4% was demonstrated on day 7. From day 14 until day 90, the efficacy of NexGard Spectra® was 100%. In the second phase, all dogs were free of live T. penetrans from 15 until 45 days after the day 90 treatment; 60 days post-treatment, 11% of dogs were reinfected, and 75 days post-treatment, 40% of dogs were reinfected. Conclusions NexGard Spectra® was demonstrated to be highly effective against canine tungiasis. In addition to an obvious beneficial effect on the health and welfare of the treated dog, the use of this product may have a one-health benefit on human cases by controlling the main reservoir of sand fleas. Porcine astrovirus 4 (PoAstV4) has been recently associated with respiratory disease in pigs. In order to understand the scope of PoAstV4 infections and to support the development of a vaccine to combat PoAstV4 disease in pigs, we designed and produced a recombinant PoAstV4 capsid spike protein for use as an antigen in serological assays and for potential future use as a vaccine antigen. Structural prediction of the full-length PoAstV4 capsid protein guided the design of the recombinant PoAstV4 capsid spike domain expression plasmid. The recombinant PoAstV4 capsid spike was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified by affinity and size-exclusion chromatography, and its crystal structure was determined at 1.85 Å resolution, enabling structural comparisons to other animal and human astrovirus capsid spike structures. The recombinant PoAstV4 capsid spike protein was also used as an antigen for the successful development of a serological assay to detect PoAstV4 antibodies, demonstrating that the recombinant PoAstV4 capsid spike retains antigenic epitopes found on the native PoAstV4 capsid. These studies lay a foundation for seroprevalence studies and the development of a PoAstV4 vaccine for swine.

Abstract Background Despite the improvements in treatment over the last decades, periodontal disease (PD) affects millions of people around the world and the only treatment available is based on controlling microbial load. Diabetes is known to increase the risk of PD establishment and progression, and recently, glucose metabolism modulation by pharmaceutical or dietarian means has been emphasised as a significant modulator of non-communicable disease development. Methods The impact of pharmaceutically controlling glucose metabolism in non-diabetic animals and humans (REBEC, UTN code: U1111-1276-1942) was investigated by repurposing Metformin, as a mean to manage periodontal disease and its associated systemic risk factors. Results We found that glucose metabolism control via use of Metformin aimed at PD management resulted in significant prevention of bone loss during induced periodontal disease and age-related bone loss in vivo. Metformin also influenced the bacterial species present in the oral environment and impacted the metabolic epithelial and stromal responses to bacterial dysbiosis at a single cell level. Systemically, Metformin controlled blood glucose levels and age-related weight gain when used long-term. Translationally, our pilot randomized control trial indicated that systemic Metformin was safe to use in non-diabetic patients and affected the periodontal tissues. During the medication window, patients showed stable levels of systemic blood glucose, lower circulating hsCRP and lower insulin levels after periodontal treatment when compared to placebo. Finally, patients treated with Metformin had improved periodontal parameters when compared to placebo treated patients. Conclusion This is the first study to demonstrate that systemic interventions using Metformin in non-diabetic individuals aimed at PD prevention have oral-systemic effects constituting a possible novel form of preventive medicine for oral-systemic disease management.

This project aims to provide a novel and compact pollution detection, monitoring, and analysis system architecture to monitor marine fields and detect different types of marine pollution that includes hardware and software components. The system will mainly consist of a Shore Control Centre (SCC) and unmanned surface vessels, both equipped with multi-sensor technology and artificial intelligence-based solutions. The SCC will play a key role as a central network hub of the system.

Abstract X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) are state-of-the-art scientific tools capable to study matter on the scale of atomic processes. Since the initial operation of X-ray FELs more than a decade ago, several facilities with upgraded performance have been put in operation. Here we present the first lasing results of Athos, the soft X-ray FEL beamline of SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Athos features an undulator layout based on short APPLE-X modules providing full polarisation control, interleaved with small magnetic chicanes. This versatile configuration allows for many operational modes, giving control over many FEL properties. We show, for example, a 35% reduction of the required undulator length to achieve FEL saturation with respect to standard undulator configurations. We also demonstrate the generation of more powerful pulses than the ones obtained in typical undulators. Athos represents a fundamental step forward in the design of FEL facilities, creating opportunities in FEL-based sciences.

Abstract: Aim Our goal was to relate the phytoplankton metacommunity to its possible determinants in a micro watershed: (I) determinants related to landscape-scale filtering, (II) determinants referring to local microhabitat filtering, (III) determinants referring to previous colonization, and (IV) determinants representing three different dispersal routes. Methods Eight sampling stations were selected along the Cascavel River watershed, located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Samples were collected quarterly for three years. All phytoplankton samples were quantitatively analyzed to determine the density of the metacommunity. In addition, it was characterized the landscape in terms of land use and occupation, and environmental characterization in terms of physical and chemical variables of the water. All data underwent relevant statistical analysis, where variance partitioning was carried out using partial RDA models, with prior selection of predictor variables, to estimate the relative role of each predictor in the community. We also compared three possible dispersal routes: “Asymmetric Eigenvector Map” (AEM), “Overland” and “Watercourse”. Results It was found that the metacommunity was best explained by “asymmetric eigenvector mapping” (AEM), indicating that because it is a small spatial scale the high connectivity between the sampling stations enables species to disperse overland as well. The different filters act together and depend on rainfall variation. Besides fluctuating temporally, the influence of these mechanisms is subject to which dispersal hypothesis is being considered. Conclusions At the watershed scale, we argue that small-scale processes should be considered, since they homogenize the landscape and consequently leave the environmental gradient similar between sampling stations. In addition, the connectivity of colonization patches is essential to understand the behavior of microalgae that have a high dispersal capacity and are not restricted only to the river course.

Abstract: Aim We investigated the ichthyofauna parasite component community across a gradient of anthropogenic pressures of the Guaraguaçu River, south Brazil, a Neotropical river of central importance for biodiversity conservation. Methods After fish sampling, all fish were identified, measured, weighed and eviscerated. The viscera and gills were inspected for parasite screening and subsequent identification. Parasite diversity estimators were calculated for the most abundant host species. Results A total of 159 host specimens from 12 species were examined, being 140 (88.05%) found to be infected with at least one parasite, including 14 new parasite occurrences. The most widely distributed parasite was the nematode Contracaecum sp., found in 8 host species. The highest mean infection intensity and mean abundance was observed for the monogenean Aphanoblastella mastigatus, infecting the Silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. The Shannon-Wiener, Jost and Simpson indexes were higher for the more abundant fishes, except for the Trahira Hoplias malabaricus. Most host species harbored parasites in poorly aggregated distribution, according to the discrepancy index. The Berger-Parker index showed monogenean dominance in all hosts except for H. malabaricus. We found little evidence for parasite infracommunity changes across the gradient of the river. Conclusions We described the infection patterns in an important Neotropical river. The new parasite occurrences highlight the contribution of our study. Fish-parasite interactions changed throughout the river stretches, and we argue that it does not necessarily means changes in diversity and abundance of parasite within species, but the rearrange of interactions. Moreover, it seems that parasites are more abundant in most impacted sites, another reason to continue the monitoring.

Background and objectivesTransfusion-related immune modulation (TRIM) and associated adverse outcomes during major surgery are increasingly important to patients and health services internationally. A panel of pre-operative blood tests is an essential part of the pre-operative anaesthetic assessment. This panel of blood tests commonly considers numbers of immune cells (i.e., lymphocytes, monocytes, and neutrophils and cell ratios) that may be used as biomarkers to evaluate and potentially predict post-operative adverse outcomes.DesignThis retrospective data collection from eight hospital databases, within the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, considered only patients who received blood transfusion during surgery (2016–2018) (n = 2,121). The association between pre-operative immune cell numbers and ratios and adverse outcomes were assessed. Adverse outcomes were coded using the International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10) coding which specifically considered transfusion-related immune modulation. Results were adjusted for confounding factors.ResultsAfter adjustment, decreased pre-operative lymphocyte numbers and increased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were associated with increased odds of developing infection; decreased NLR with decreased odds of developing adverse renal outcomes; and decreased lymphocyte numbers with decreased odds of developing adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Monocyte numbers, neutrophil numbers, and the lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR) were not associated with increased adverse outcomes after adjustment.ConclusionPre-operative lymphocyte numbers and NLR are associated with adverse outcomes during peri-operative transfusion. Future assessment of peri-operative immune modulation should include the assessment of immune cell function and numbers.

Gas attenuators are important devices providing accurate variation of photon intensity for soft X-ray beamlines. In the SwissFEL ATHOS beamline front-end the space is very limited and an innovative approach has been taken to provide attenuation of three orders of magnitude up to an energy of 1200 eV. Additive manufacturing of a differential pumping system vacuum manifold allowed a triple pumping stage to be realized in a space of less than half a meter. Measurements have shown that the response of the device is as expected from theoretical calculations.

Commercial crocodilian farms face significant economic and livestock losses attributed to stress, which may be linked to their adopted husbandry practices. The development of appropriate and modernized husbandry guidelines, particularly those focused on stress mitigation, is impeded by the limited understanding of the crocodilian stress response. Fifteen grower Nile crocodiles were subjected to simulated acute transport stress, with blood samples collected at various intervals post-stress. Plasma levels of corticosterone (CORT), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), adrenaline, and noradrenaline were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Glucose and lactate were measured using portable meters and the heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (HLR) was determined via differential leucocyte counts. Significant differences were elicited after the stressor, with acute fluctuations observed in the fast-acting catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline) when compared to the baseline. Downstream effects of these catecholamines and CORT appear to be associated with a persistent increase in plasma glucose and HLR. Lactate also showed acute fluctuations over time but returned to the baseline by the final measurement. DHEA, which is used in a ratio with CORT, showed fluctuations over time with an inverted release pattern to the catecholamines. The study highlights the temporal dynamics of physiological markers under acute stress, contributing to our understanding of crocodilian stress and potentially informing improved farming practices for conservation and sustainable management.

The objectives of the present study were to describe specific anatomical structures of the dromedary udder. Eighty-six dromedary udders were examined, taking morphological measurements and producing injection casts using resin, gelatin, and paraffin. The udder of the dromedaries consists of four quarters. The shape of the udders and teats varies considerably between animals and is influenced by age, breeding, and lactation status. The most frequently found udder form was the globular udder (48.8%) and the most common teat form in this study was the funnel teat (44.2%). The most common teat tip shape was a smooth or a slightly rough ring teat (61.6%). Injection casts showed a complete separation of the teat canals. There is also no communication between tributary mammary complexes. Resin injections of the glandular tissue adjacent to the teat cistern showed an extensive branching into large, medium, and small milk ducts. Frozen sections of the udder revealed complete separation of the right and left mammary complex through the Sulcus intermammarius. The teat sections showed longitudinal folds from the tip of the teat to the base of the teat. A ring fold at the transition from the Ductus papillaris to the teat cistern was present. The results of this study increase the knowledge of the anatomical structures of the dromedary udder, which may be useful for breeding a selection of dairy dromedaries.

Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity in species-rich regions. Therefore, it is important to understand mechanisms behind the long-term establishment of non-native fish species in aquatic environments in the Neotropical region. Here, we associated fish biomass, species richness, and the proportion of non-native species (contamination and Kempton's indices) to quantify the non-native pressure over fish biodiversity in lakes and rivers of the Parana River floodplain, seasonally, from 2000 to 2017. We divided species into native and non-native assemblages sampled in spatio-temporal gradients. Temporal trends were examined using linear regressions and generalised additive models. Fish biomass in gillnets increased for both native and non-native fish species, but their Kempton indices were inversely correlated. Extinction of native species occurred locally with biotic differentiation of non-native species in lakes, rivers, and ecosystem contamination. A constant increase in fish biomass resulted in overwhelming biodiversity of non-natives at the end of the time series evaluated. Native biotic resistance to introductions was not detected in deterministic trends. The observed patterns were consistent with previous studies showing native biotic homogenisation and extinction of species in response to biological invasions, landscape fragmentation, and riverine impoundments. Increases in abundance and species richness of non-native fish were the biodiversity drivers that resulted in non-native species outweighing native species in the Parana floodplain.

Critical management interventions to target the yield potential for each environment are key to food security, increasing the resilience of current agricultural systems in Senegal. Cereal production is highly dependent on pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) rainfed systems as one of the major field crops for smallholders. This study aims to (i) quantify the production of pearl millet at the department level for the last quinquennial (until 2020), (ii) assess the impact of weather (temperature and precipitation) on the millet-based supply of cereal demand, and (iii) investigate, through crop modeling, the impact of millet-based supply of cereal demand by comparing recommended management interventions with smallholder-based strategies at the department level. Millet-based cereal supply–demand was estimated considering the observed population and the supply via the simulated pearl millet production (obtained using the APSIM-Millet model) at the department level from 1990 to 2021. High temperature and low precipitation occurrence presented a frequency of 35% across departments, leading to a reduction in millet production by roughly 6% relative to the normal average for 32 years. Adoption of recommended management showed the potential to increase the millet supply, more than doubling the current cereal supply, closing the current supply–demand gap (89 kg inhabitant−1). Achieving future cereal self-sufficiency will also require an intensification of other cereal production.

This study presents a framework merging failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA) techniques to evaluate loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in the Brazilian Reactor TRIGA IPR-RI. At first, FMEA identified failure modes and prioritized risk management based on the risk priority number (RPN). Subsequently, FTA established logical relationships between these failure modes, revealing minimal cut sets. Results indicated that the path involving “loss of coolant from reactor tank” correlate to an externally caused leak, exhibiting a low probability and, consequently, a low RPN. On the other hand, the path involving “loss of coolant through primary circuit rupture without a pump shutdown” highlighted high RPN due to the lack of shutdown signals from the monitoring indicators. Finally, FTA unveiled that LOCA associates with a primary circuit rupture and the simultaneous failure of safety mechanisms, including ultimately human error.

Topology optimization of heterogeneous structures can find significant use in a wide range of applications, and its fabrication has been made possible by recent advances in additive manufacturing. However, the optimization procedure is computationally expensive, as each structural update requires the re-evaluation of the properties. The computational time is the major limiting factor in large-scale and complex structural optimization. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model for predicting effective thermal conductivity inspired by the VGG networks is proposed. Trained using 130,000 unique binary images, the model achieves high predictive accuracy. Specifically, it shows a mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 0.35% in testing when the thermal conductivity of the solid is ten times larger than the fluid, and when the thermal conductivities assigned are that of aluminum and water, the MAPE is 2.35%. The prediction time is 15 ms for a single image with 128 × 128 pixels, which is 3 to 5 orders of magnitude faster than a finite volume simulation. When employed in topology optimization, the CNN retains a MAPE between 0.67% and 11.8% for different cases. The CNN model correctly predicts trends in effective thermal conductivity and improves the structure to close proximity of a theoretical maximum in all cases.

Maternal severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can affect placental function, but the possibility of intrauterine transmission has been debated. Several authors have published inclusion criteria for vertical transmission, but few reports exist that are able to meet the suggested requirements. Despite the fact that the majority of fetuses born to infected mothers do well, others become critically ill. We present a case of likely intrauterine transmission of a neonate born to a mother who was recently symptomatic with a positive SARS CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The parturient complained of decreased fetal movement and presented at 312/7 weeks' gestation with a biophysical profile score of 2/10 and required an emergency cesarean delivery. The neonate went on to develop severe leukopenia with signs of sepsis with a positive SARS CoV-2 PCR on day 4 of life and an otherwise pan-negative workup. Meeting criteria for transplacental transmission requires timely collection of several diagnostic studies that are not standard of care. Further research is needed to support the notion that intrauterine/transplacental infection is possible. Collection swabs should be obtained soon after delivery to help diagnose neonatal infection because early diagnosis is crucial to help identify opportunities for intervention.

In the present work, an assessment of the Neutronic Benchmark of the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR) was performed using mesh based Monte Carlo Neutron Transport (MCNT) calculations with numerical uncertainty quantification due to discretization in neutronic parameters. Calculations with Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) models where made as a baseline for the developed mesh based models. The numerical uncertainty given by the mesh utilization is evaluated using an extended version of the Grid Convergence Index (GCI). The fuel salt reprocessing is evaluated regarding a constant reprocessing rate. The fuel salt inventory variation with time for the developed models (CSG and meshed) is presented. The differences caused by the discretization procedure are noticeable, which shows that mesh based MCNT require careful mesh sensitivity evaluation and further validation.

Abstract β-ionone (ION) is a cyclic terpenoid compound that demonstrates considerable potential for the prevention and treatment of cancer. However, the water solubility of β-ionone is poor and the compound demonstrates low permeability. Liposomes have been reported as increasing both qualities. In this study, the development of β-ionone liposomes was initiated by adding 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane (DOTAP) to produce cationic liposomes as a means of enhancing binding to cancer cells. Liposomes composed of β-ionone, HSPC, cholesterol, and DSPE-mPEG2000 were prepared using the thin layer hydration method. Cellular uptake studies were carried out with HeLa cells incubated with β-ionone liposomes for two hours. The results indicated that the addition of DOTAP increased particle size and affected the spectroscopical and thermogram profiles of the liposomes, thereby confirming reduction in liposome crystallinity, while the zeta potential became positive. Moreover, the calcein release profile further showed that additional DOTAP increased both membrane fluidity and cellular uptake in HeLa cells In conclusion, adding DOTAP affected the physicochemical cationic properties of liposome and improved cellular uptake in HeLa cells.

Children as victims of criminal acts of sexual violence essentially need to get the protection of the welfare and the right to return to grow and develop in accordance with the 1945 Constitution. Losses suffered by children need to be claimed through criminal compensation to the perpetrator or third person, namely the submission of the right to restitution. The mechanism for filing the right to restitution has certainly developed in the rule of law. However, until now it is still an obstacle for victims in fulfilling the filing requirements based on Government Regulation Number 43 of 2017. Of course this will make it difficult for victims to get justice as they should. This article will use normative research, where this research describes the analysis of the problems presented in the research using laws and regulations that refer to Law Number 31 of 2014 and Government Regulation Number 43 of 2017 in accordance with the scope of the discussion of applicable law and comes from literature journals and other sources of information that become references for the author to collect data to complete this research. The results show that the mechanism for implementing the right to restitution is difficult to implement, especially considering that victims tend to be unfamiliar with the law, besides that there are still perpetrators who generally come from the closest family and are not capable and have not regulated the nominal amount of payment that the perpetrator must fulfill. Therefore, it is necessary to reformulate the applicable regulations and related institutions need to play an active role in facilitating victims to fulfill the rights that should be obtained from a criminal offense as a form of effort to realize Human Rights (HAM) itself in the constitutional guarantees of citizens, especially children.

Abstract Defect formation during synthesis is one of the strategies used to improve the photoactivity of polycrystalline semiconductors such as titanium dioxide (TiO2). Defects can modify the electronic structure of TiO2 and change the surface of the interaction between the photocatalyst and the reactants. In this study, TiO2 relationship between processing in the presence of iodine and the consequent formation of intrinsic defects were explored. TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using the polymeric precursor method and exposed to iodine ions at concentrations up to 5 mol%. After calcination at 350°C, detailed chemical analyses revealed that iodine was absent in the samples. However, the TiO2 properties, such as specific surface area, crystallite sizes, and specific grain boundary area, were affected. Further experiments, such as electron paramagnetic resonance, diffuse reflectance, optical measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated the presence of defects in the iodine‐processed samples. These defects directly influenced the electrical properties of the material, which affected the photoactivity, measured by the degradation of acetaminophen.

Software engineering is concerned with organizational issues, project management, and human behavior. In the process of constructing a work team, leadership faces the task of evaluating the talents and abilities of each professional and combining them into a cohesive unit that matches the profile of the project. This article describes the SOHCO technique, a strategy for forming work teams that calculates a score for each candidate based on the project profile, as well as a ranking for the work team whose desired objective most closely aligns with the project profile. This article presents exploratory research, an experiment, two real-world case studies, and a comparison of methods using WS and RW coefficients to assess ranking consistency and similarity. Results reveal that SOHCO makes constructing a work team more objective, reduces leadership effort, enhances the ability to evaluate new team arrangements, increases the probability of project success, and reduces training costs. As a limitation, the SOHCO method does not take sub-criteria weights into account.
