Search

Despite recent progress, the question of what regulates the star formation efficiency in galaxies remains one of the most debated problems in astrophysics. According to the dominant picture, star formation (SF) is regulated by turbulence and feedback, and the SFE is 1-2% per local free-fall time. In an alternate scenario, the SF rate in galactic disks is linearly proportional to the mass of dense gas above a critical density threshold. We aim to discriminate between these two pictures thanks to high-resolution observations tracing dense gas and young stellar objects (YSOs) for a comprehensive sample of 49 nearby massive SF complexes out to d < 3 kpc in the Galactic disk. We use data from CAFFEINE, a 350/450 $\mu$m survey with APEX/ArT\'eMiS of the densest portions of all southern molecular clouds, in combination with Herschel data to produce column density maps at 8" resolution. Our maps are free of saturation and resolve the structure of dense gas and the typical 0.1 pc width of molecular filaments at 3 kpc, which is impossible with Herschel data alone. Coupled with SFR estimates derived from Spitzer observations of the YSO content of the same clouds, this allows us to study the dependence of the SFE with density in the CAFFEINE clouds. We also combine our findings with existing SFE measurements in nearby clouds to extend our analysis down to lower column densities. Our results suggest that the SFE does not increase with density above the critical threshold and support a scenario in which the SFE in dense gas is approximately constant. However, the SFE measurements traced by Class I YSOs in nearby clouds are more inconclusive, since they are consistent with both the presence of a density threshold and a dependence on density above the threshold. Recent Herschel observations of nearby clouds have shown that filamentary structures are ubiquitous and that most prestellar cores form in filaments. Probing the density ($n$) and velocity ($V$) structure of filaments is crucial for the understanding of the star formation process. To characterize both the $n$ and the $V$ field of a fragmenting filament, we mapped NGC2024. 13CO, C18O, and H13CO+ trace the filament seen in the $N_{H_2}$ data. The radial profile from the $N_{H_2}$ data shows $D_{HP}$~0.081 pc, which is similar to the Herschel findings. The $D_{HP}$ from 13CO and C18O are broader, while the $D_{HP}$ from H13CO+ is narrower, than $D_{HP}$ from Herschel. These results suggest that 13CO and C18O trace only the outer part of the filament and H13CO+ only the inner part. The H13CO+ $V_{centroid}$ map reveals $V$ gradients along both filament axis, as well as $V$ oscillations with a period $\lambda$~0.2 pc along the major axis. Comparison between the $V$ and the $n$ distribution shows a tentative $\lambda$/4 shift in H13CO+ or C18O. This $\lambda$/4 shift is not simultaneously observed for all cores in any single tracer but is tentatively seen in either H13CO+ or C18O. We produced a toy model taking into account a transverse $V$ gradient, a longitudinal $V$ gradient, and a longitudinal oscillation mode caused by fragmentation. Examination of synthetic data shows that the oscillation component produces an oscillation pattern in the velocity structure function (VSF) of the model. The H13CO+ VSF shows an oscillation pattern, suggesting that our observations are partly tracing core-forming motions and fragmentation. We also found that the mean $M_{core}$ corresponds to the effective $M_{BE}$ in the filament. Herschel studies suggest that nearby (d < 500 pc) molecular filaments have a typical half-power width ~0.1pc, but this finding has been questioned on the ground that the measured widths tend to increase with distance. Here we revisit the dependence of measured filament widths on distance or equivalently spatial resolution, in an effort to determine whether nearby molecular filaments have a characteristic half-power width or whether this is an artifact of the finite resolution of the Herschel data. We perform a convergence test on the B211/213 filament in Taurus, by degrading the resolution of the Herschel data several times and re-estimating the filament width from the resulting column density profiles. We also compare the widths measured for the Taurus filament and other filaments from the Herschel Gould Belt survey to those found for synthetic filaments with various types of simple, idealized column density profiles. We find that the measured filament widths do increase slightly as the spatial resolution worsens and/or the distance to the filaments increases. However, this trend is entirely consistent with what is expected from simple beam convolution for filaments with density profiles that are Plummer-like and have intrinsic half-power diameters ~0.08-0.1 pc and logarithmic slopes 1.5 < p < 2.5 at large radii, as observed in many cases including the Taurus filament. Due to the presence of background noise fluctuations, deconvolution of the measured widths from the telescope beam quickly becomes inaccurate. We conclude that the typical half-power filament width ~0.1 pc measured with Herschel in nearby clouds most likely reflects the presence of a true common scale in the filamentary structure of the cold interstellar medium, at least in the solar neighborhood. We present N-PDFs of 29 Galactic regions obtained from Herschel imaging at high angular resolution, covering diffuse and quiescent clouds, and those showing low-, intermediate-, and high-mass star formation (SF), and characterize the cloud structure using the Delta-variance tool. The N-PDFs are double-log-normal at low column densities, and display one or two power law tails (PLTs) at higher column densities. For diffuse, quiescent, and low-mass SF clouds, we propose that the two log-normals arise from the atomic and molecular phase, respectively. For massive clouds, we suggest that the first log-normal is built up by turbulently mixed H2 and the second one by compressed (via stellar feedback) molecular gas. Nearly all clouds have two PLTs with slopes consistent with self-gravity, where the second one can be flatter or steeper than the first one. A flatter PLT could be caused by stellar feedback or other physical processes that slow down collapse and reduce the flow of mass toward higher densities. The steeper slope could arise if the magnetic field is oriented perpendicular to the LOS column density distribution. The first deviation point (DP), where the N-PDF turns from log-normal into a PLT, shows a clustering around values of a visual extinction of AV (DP1) around 2-5. The second DP, which defines the break between the two PLTs, varies strongly. Using the Delta-variance, we observe that the AV value, where the slope changes between the first and second PLT, increases with the characteristic size scale in the variance spectrum. We conclude that at low column densities, atomic and molecular gas is turbulently mixed, while at high column densities, the gas is fully molecular and dominated by self-gravity. (abridged) Within the Orion A molecular cloud, the integral-shaped filament (ISF) is a prominent, degree-long structure of dense gas and dust, with clear signs of recent and on-going high-mass star formation. We used the ArTeMiS bolometer camera at APEX to map a 0.6x0.2 deg^2 region covering OMC-1, OMC-2, OMC-3 at 350 and 450 micron. We combined these data with Herschel-SPIRE maps to recover extended emission. The combined Herschel-ArTeMiS maps provide details on the distribution of dense, cold material, with a high spatial dynamic range, from our 8'' resolution (0.016 pc) up to the size of the map ~10-15 deg. By combining Herschel and ArTeMiS data at 160, 250, 350 and 450 micron, we constructed high-resolution temperature and H2 column density maps. We extracted radial profiles from the column density map in several, representative portions of the ISF, that we fitted with Gaussian and Plummer models to derive their intrinsic widths. We also compared the distribution of material traced by ArTeMiS with that seen in the higher density tracer N2H+(1-0) recently observed with the ALMA interferometer. All the radial profiles that we extracted show clear deviation from a Gaussian, with evidence for an inner plateau, previously not seen using Herschel-only data. We measure intrinsic half-power widths in the range 0.06 to 0.11 pc. This is significantly larger than the Gaussian widths measured for fibers seen in N2H+, which probably traces only the dense innermost regions of the large-scale filament. These half-power widths are within a factor of two of the value of 0.1 pc found for a large sample of nearby filaments in various low-mass star-forming regions, which tends to indicate that the physical conditions governing the fragmentation of prestellar cores within transcritical or supercritical filaments are the same over a large range of masses per unit length., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in A&A. Context. The process of mass accretion in the earliest phases of star formation is still not fully understood: Does the accretion rate smoothly decline with the age of the protostar or are there short, intermittent accretion bursts? Aims. We aim to explore whether or not the observed C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ emission pattern towards the VeLLO IRAM 04191+1522 can be understood in the framework of a scenario where the emission is chemically tracing a past accretion burst. Methods.We used high-angular-resolution Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) observations of C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ towards IRAM 04191+1522 that were obtained as part of the CALYPSO IRAM Large Program. We model these observations using a chemical code with a time-dependent physical structure coupled with a radiative transfer module, where we allow for variations in the source luminosity. Results. We find that the N$_2$H$^+$ line emission shows a central hole, while the C$^{18}$O emission is compact. The morphology of these two lines cannot be reproduced with a constant luminosity model based on the present-day internal luminosity (0.08 L$_{sun}$). However, the N$_2$H$^+$ peaks are consistent with a constant-luminosity model of 12 L$_{sun}$. Using a model with time-dependent temperature and density profiles, we show that the observed N$_2$H$^+$ peak emission could indeed be caused by a past accretion burst. Such a burst should have occurred a couple of hundred years ago. Conclusions. We suggest that an accretion burst occurred in IRAM 04191+1522 in the recent past. If such bursts are common and sufficiently long in VeLLOs, they could lead to higher accretion onto the central object than their luminosity suggests. For IRAM 04191 in particular, our results yield an estimated final mass of 0.2 - 0.25 M$_{sun}$ by the end of the Class 0 phase, which would make this object a low-mass star rather than a brown dwarf., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A, (this version with corrected list of authors in metadata)

The Herschel Gould Belt survey mapped the nearby (d < 500 pc) star-forming regions to understand better how the prestellar phase influences the star formation process. Here we report a complete census of dense cores in a 15 deg2 area of the Serpens star-forming region located between d=420 pc and 484 pc. The PACS and SPIRE cameras imaged this cloud from 70micron to 500micron. With the multi-wavelength source extraction algorithm getsources, we extract 833 sources, of which 709 are starless cores and 124 are candidate proto-stellar cores. We obtain temperatures and masses for all the sample, classifying the starless cores in 604 prestellar cores and 105 unbound cores. Our census of sources is 80% complete for masses larger than 0.8 Msun overall. We produce the core mass function (CMF) and compare it with the initial mass function (IMF). The prestellar CMF is consistent with log-normal trend up to 2 Msun, after which it follows a power-law with slope of -2.05+/-0.34. The tail of its CMF is steeper but still compatible with the IMF for the region we studied in this work. We also extract the filaments network of the Serpens region, finding that 81% of prestellar cores lie on filamentary structures. The spatial association between cores and filamentary structure supports the paradigm, suggested by otherHerschelobservations, that prestellar cores mostly form on filaments. (Abridged) In this paper, we present analyses of images taken with the Herschel ESA satellite from 70mu to 500mu. We first constructed column density and dust temperature maps. Next, we identified compact cores in the maps, and characterize the cores using modified blackbody fits to their SEDs: we identified 684 starless cores, of which 199 are bound and potential prestellar cores, and 132 protostars. We also matched the Herschel-identified young stars with GAIA sources to model distance variations across the Perseus cloud. We measure a linear gradient function with right ascension and declination for the entire cloud. From the SED fits, mass and temperature of cores were derived. The core mass function can be modelled with a log-normal distribution that peaks at 0.82~$M_\sun$ suggesting a star formation efficiency of 0.30. The high-mass tail can be modelled with a power law of slope $\sim-2.32$, close to the Salpeter's value. We also identify the filamentary structure of Perseus, confirming that stars form preferentially in filaments. We find that the majority of filaments where star formation is ongoing are transcritical against their own internal gravity because their linear masses are below the critical limit of 16~$M_\sun$pc$^{-1}$ above which we expect filaments to collapse. We find a possible explanation for this result, showing that a filament with a linear mass as low as 8~$M_\sun$pc$^{-1}$ can be already unstable. We confirm a linear relation between star formation efficiency and slope of dust probability density function and a similar relation is also seen with the core formation efficiency. We derive a lifetime for the prestellar core phase of $1.69\pm0.52$~Myr for Perseus but different regions have a wide range in prestellar core fractions, hint that star-formation has started only recently in some clumps. The mass growth of protostars is a central element to the determination of fundamental stellar population properties such as the initial mass function. Constraining the accretion history of individual protostars is therefore an important aspect of star formation research. The goal of the study presented here is to determine whether high-mass (proto)stars gain their mass from a compact (<0.1pc) fixed-mass reservoir of gas, often referred to as dense cores, in which they are embedded, or whether the mass growth of high-mass stars is governed by the dynamical evolution of the parsec-scale clump that typically surrounds them. To achieve this goal, we performed a 350micron continuum mapping of 11 infrared dark clouds, along side some of their neighbouring clumps, with the ArT\'eMiS camera on APEX. By identifying about 200 compact ArT\'eMiS sources, and matching them with Herschel Hi-GAL 70micron sources, we have been able to produce mass vs. temperature diagrams. We compare the nature (i.e. starless or protostellar) and location of the ArT\'eMiS sources in these diagrams with modelled evolutionary tracks of both core-fed and clump-fed accretion scenarios. We argue that the latter provide a better agreement with the observed distribution of high-mass star-forming cores. Massive stars and their associated ionized (HII) regions could play a key role in the formation and evolution of filaments that host star formation. However, the properties of filaments that interact with H regions are still poorly known. To investigate the impact of HII regions on the formation of filaments, we imaged the Galactic HII region RCW 120 and its surroundings where active star formation takes place and where the role of ionization feedback on the star formation process has already been studied. We used the ArT\'eMiS camera on the APEX telescope and combined the ArT\'eMiS data at 350 and 450 microns with Herschel-SPIRE/HOBYS. We studied the dense gas distribution around RCW 120 with a resolution of 8 arcsec (0.05 pc at a distance of 1.34 kpc). Our study allows us to trace the median radial intensity profile of the dense shell of RCW 120. This profile is asymmetric, indicating a clear compression from the HII region on the inner part of the shell. The profile is observed to be similarly asymmetric on both lateral sides of the shell, indicating a homogeneous compression over the surface. On the contrary, the profile analysis of a radial filament associated with the shell, but located outside of it, reveals a symmetric profile, suggesting that the compression from the ionized region is limited to the dense shell. The mean intensity profile of the internal part of the shell is well fitted by a Plummer like profile with a deconvolved Gaussian FWHM of 0.09 pc, as observed for filaments in low-mass star-forming regions. This study suggests that compression exerted by HII regions may play a key role in the formation of filaments and may further act on their hosted star formation. Dense molecular filaments are central to the star formation process, but the detailed manner in which they fragment into prestellar cores is not yet well understood. Here, we investigate the fragmentation properties and dynamical state of several star-forming filaments in the X-shape Nebula region of the California MC, in an effort to shed some light on this issue. We used multi-wavelength far-infrared images from Herschel and the getsources and getfilaments extraction methods to identify dense cores and filaments and derive their basic properties. We also used a map of $\rm ^{13}CO (2-1)$ emission from SMT 10m submillimeter telescope to constrain the dynamical state of the filaments. We identified 10 filaments, as well as 57 dense cores. Two star-forming filaments (# 8 and # 10) stand out in that they harbor quasi-periodic chains of dense cores with a typical projected core spacing of $\sim$0.15 pc. These two filaments have thermally supercritical line masses and are not static. Filament~8 exhibits a prominent transverse velocity gradient, suggesting that it is accreting gas from the parent cloud gas reservoir. In both cases, the observed (projected) core spacing is similar to the filament width and significantly shorter than the canonical separation of $\sim \,$4 times the filament width predicted by classical cylinder fragmentation theory. We suggest that continuous accretion of gas onto the two star-forming filaments, as well as geometrical bending of the filaments, may account for the observed core spacing. Our findings suggest that the characteristic fragmentation lengthscale of molecular filaments is quite sensitive to external perturbations from the parent cloud, such as gravitational accretion of ambient material., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Complex organic molecules (COMs) have been detected in a few Class 0 protostars but their origin is not well understood. Going beyond studies of individual objects, we want to investigate the origin of COMs in young protostars on a statistical basis. We use the CALYPSO survey performed with the IRAM PdBI to search for COMs at high angular resolution in a sample of 26 solar-type protostars, including 22 Class 0 and four Class I objects. Methanol is detected in 12 sources and tentatively in one source, which represents half of the sample. Eight sources (30%) have detections of at least three COMs. We find a strong chemical differentiation in multiple systems with five systems having one component with at least three COMs detected but the other component devoid of COM emission. The internal luminosity is found to be the source parameter impacting the most the COM chemical composition of the sources, while there is no obvious correlation between the detection of COM emission and that of a disk-like structure. A canonical hot-corino origin may explain the COM emission in four sources, an accretion-shock origin in two or possibly three sources, and an outflow origin in three sources. The CALYPSO sources with COM detections can be classified into three groups on the basis of the abundances of oxygen-bearing molecules, cyanides, and CHO-bearing molecules. These chemical groups correlate neither with the COM origin scenarii, nor with the evolutionary status of the sources if we take the ratio of envelope mass to internal luminosity as an evolutionary tracer. We find strong correlations between molecules that are a priori not related chemically (for instance methanol and methyl cyanide), implying that the existence of a correlation does not imply a chemical link. [abridged] Understanding how the infalling gas redistribute most of its initial angular momentum inherited from prestellar cores before reaching the stellar embryo is a key question. Disk formation has been naturally considered as a possible solution to this "angular momentum problem". However, how the initial angular momentum of protostellar cores is distributed and evolves during the main accretion phase and the beginning of disk formation has largely remained unconstrained up to now. In the framework of the IRAM CALYPSO survey, we used high dynamic range C$^{18}$O (2-1) and N$_2$H$^+$ (1-0) observations to quantify the distribution of specific angular momentum along the equatorial axis in a sample of 12 Class 0 protostellar envelopes from scales ~50 to 10000 au. The radial distributions of specific angular momentum in the CALYPSO sample suggest two distinct regimes within protostellar envelopes: the specific angular momentum decreases as $j \propto r^{1.6 \pm 0.2}$ down to ~1600 au and then tends to become relatively constant around 6 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ km s$^{-1}$ pc down to ~50 au. The values of specific angular momentum measured in the inner Class 0 envelopes, namely that of the material directly involved in the star formation process ($<$1600 au), is on the same order of magnitude as what is inferred in small T-Tauri disks. Thus, disk formation appears to be a direct consequence of angular momentum conservation during the collapse. Our analysis reveals a dispersion of the directions of velocity gradients at envelope scales $>$1600 au, suggesting that they may not be related to rotational motions of the envelopes. We conclude that the specific angular momentum observed at these scales could find its origin in core-forming motions (infall, turbulence) or trace an imprint of the initial conditions for the formation of protostellar cores., Comment: 62 pages, 66 figures

The formation of protoplanetary disks is not well understood. To understand how and when these disks are formed, it is crucial to characterize the kinematics of the youngest protostars at a high angular resolution. Here we study a sample of 16 Class 0 protostars to measure their rotation profile at scales from 50 to 500~au and search for Keplerian rotation. We used high-angular-resolution line observations obtained with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer as part of the CALYPSO large program. From $\mathrm{^{13}CO}$ ($J=2-1$), $\mathrm{C^{18}O}$ ($J=2-1$) and SO ($N_{j}=5_{6}-4_{5}$) moment maps, we find that seven sources show rotation about the jet axis at a few hundred au scales: SerpS-MM18, L1448-C, L1448-NB, L1527, NGC1333- IRAS2A, NGC1333-IRAS4B, and SVS13-B. We analyzed the kinematics of these sources in the $uv$ plane to derive the rotation profiles down to 50~au scales. We find evidence for Keplerian rotation in only two sources, L1527 and L1448-C. Overall, this suggests that Keplerian disks larger than 50 au are uncommon around Class 0 protostars. However, in some of the sources, the line emission could be optically thick and dominated by the envelope emission. Herschel surveys of Galactic clouds support a paradigm for low-mass star formation in which dense filaments play a crucial role. The detailed fragmentation properties of star-forming filaments remain poorly understood, however, and the validity of the filament paradigm in the high-mass regime is still unclear. To investigate the density/velocity structure of the filament in the high-mass star-forming region NGC6334, we conducted ALMA observations in the 3mm continuum and the N2H+(1-0) line at ~3arcsec resolution. The filament was detected in both tracers. We identified 26 cores at 3mm and 5 velocity-coherent fiber-like features in N2H+ within the filament. The typical length of, and velocity difference between, the fiber-like features of the NGC6334 filament are reminiscent of the properties for the fibers of the low-mass star-forming filament B211/B213. Only 2 or 3 of the 5 velocity-coherent features are well aligned with the filament and may represent genuine, fiber sub-structures. The core mass distribution has a peak at ~10Msun. They can be divided into 7 groups of cores, closely associated with ArTeMiS clumps. The projected separation between cores and the projected spacing between clumps are roughly consistent with the effective Jeans length in the filament and a physical scale of about 4 times the filament width, respectively, suggesting a bimodal filament fragmentation process. Despite being one order of magnitude denser and more massive than the B211/B213 filament, the NGC6334 filament has a similar density/velocity structure. The difference is that the cores in NGC6334 appear to be an order of magnitude denser and more massive than the cores in Taurus. This suggests that dense filaments may evolve and fragment in a similar manner in low- and high-mass star-forming regions, and that the filament paradigm may hold in the intermediate-mass (if not high-mass) star formation regime., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a detailed study of the Orion B clouds (d~400 pc), imaged with the PACS/SPIRE cameras at 70-500 $\mu$m by the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We release new high-res. maps of column density and dust temperature. In the filamentary sub-regions NGC2023/2024, NGC2068/2071, and L1622, 1768 starless dense cores were identified, ~28-45% of which are self-gravitating prestellar cores. A total of 76 protostellar dense cores were also found. The typical lifetime of the prestellar cores was found to be $t_{\rm pre}=1.7_{-0.6}^{+0.8}$ Myr. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) peaks at ~0.5 $M_\odot$ and is consistent with a power law with log slope -1.27$\pm$0.24 at the high-mass end, compared to the Salpeter slope of -1.35. In this region, we confirm the existence of a transition in prestellar core formation efficiency (CFE) around a fiducial value A_V_bg~7 mag in background visual extinction, similar to the trend observed with Herschel in other clouds. This is not a sharp threshold, but a smooth transition between a regime with very low prestellar CFE at A_V_bg<5 and a regime with higher, roughly constant CFE at A_V_bg$\gtrsim$10. The total mass in the form of prestellar cores represents only ~20% of the dense molecular cloud gas at A_V_bg$\gtrsim$7 mag. About 60-80% of the prestellar cores are closely associated with filaments, and this fraction increases up to >90% when a more complete sample of filamentary structures is considered. Interestingly, the median separation between nearest core neighbors corresponds to the typical inner filament width of ~0.1 pc commonly observed in nearby molecular clouds. Analysis of the CMF observed as a function of background cloud column density shows that the most massive prestellar cores are spatially segregated in the highest column density areas, and suggests that both higher- and lower-mass prestellar cores may form in denser filaments., Comment: In press in Astronomy and Astrophysics. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1507.05926

SPICA, the cryogenic infrared space telescope recently pre-selected for a `Phase A' concept study as one of the three remaining candidates for ESA's fifth medium class (M5) mission, is foreseen to include a far-infrared polarimetric imager (SPICA-POL, now called B-BOP), which would offer a unique opportunity to resolve major issues in our understanding of the nearby, cold magnetized Universe. This paper presents an overview of the main science drivers for B-BOP, including high dynamic range polarimetric imaging of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in both our Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Thanks to a cooled telescope, B-BOP will deliver wide-field 100-350 micron images of linearly polarized dust emission in Stokes Q and U with a resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and both intensity and spatial dynamic ranges comparable to those achieved by Herschel images of the cold ISM in total intensity (Stokes I). The B-BOP 200 micron images will also have a factor ~30 higher resolution than Planck polarization data. This will make B-BOP a unique tool for characterizing the statistical properties of the magnetized interstellar medium and probing the role of magnetic fields in the formation and evolution of the interstellar web of dusty molecular filaments giving birth to most stars in our Galaxy. Herschel observations have emphasized the role of molecular filaments in star formation. However, the origin and evolution of these filaments are not yet well understood, partly because of the lack of kinematic information. To examine whether the B211/B213 filament is accreting background gas due to its gravitational potential, we produced a toy accretion model and compared its predictions to the 12CO(1--0) and 13CO(1--0) velocity patterns. We also examined the spatial distributions of Halpha, 857 GHz continuum, and HI emission to search for evidence of large-scale external effects. We estimated the depth of the cloud around the B211/B213 filament to be 0.3--0.7 pc under the assumption that the density of the gas is the same as the 13CO critical density. Compared to a linear extent of >10 pc in the plane of the sky, this suggests that the 3D morphology of the cloud is sheet-like. 12CO and 13CO PV diagrams perpendicular to the filament axis show that the emission from the gas surrounding B211/B213 is redshifted to the northeast of the filament and blueshifted to the southwest, respectively, and that the velocities of both components approach the filament velocity as the line of sight approaches the filament crest. The PV diagrams predicted by our accretion model are in good agreement with the observed 12CO and 13CO PV diagrams, supporting the scenario of mass accretion into the filament proposed by Palmeirim et al. Moreover, inspection of the distribution of the Halpha and 857 GHz emission in the Taurus-California-Perseus region suggests that the B211/B213 filament may have formed as a result of an expanding supershell generated by the Per OB2 association. Understanding the formation mechanisms of protoplanetary disks and multiple systems, and their pristine properties, is a key question for modern astrophysics. The properties of the youngest disks, embedded in rotating infalling protostellar envelopes, have largely remained unconstrained up to now. In the framework of the IRAM-PdBI CALYPSO survey, we have obtained sub-arcsecond observations of the dust continuum emission at 231 GHz and 94 GHz, for a sample of 16 solar-type Class 0 protostars. In an attempt to identify disk-like structures embedded at small scales in the protostellar envelopes, we model the dust continuum emission visibility profiles using both Plummer-like envelope models and envelope models including additional Gaussian disk-like components. Our analysis shows that in the CALYPSO sample, 11 of the 16 Class 0 protostars are better reproduced by models including a disk-like dust continuum component contributing to the flux at small scales, but less than 25% of these candidate protostellar disks are resolved at radii > 60 au. Including all available literature constraints on Class 0 disks at subarcsecond scales, we show that our results are representative: most (> 72% in a sample of 26 protostars) Class 0 protostellar disks are small and emerge only at radii < 60 au. Our multiplicity fraction at scales 100-5000 au is in global agreement with the multiplicity properties of Class I protostars at similar scales. We confront our observational constraints on the disk size distribution in Class 0 protostars to the typical disk properties from protostellar formation models. [Abridged] Molecular filaments have received special attention recently, thanks to new observational results on their properties. In particular, our early analysis of filament properties revealed a narrow distribution of median widths centered at a value of about 0.1 pc. Here, we extend and complement our initial study with the analysis of the filamentary structures observed in eight nearby molecular clouds. We use the column density maps derived from Herschel data and the DisPerSE algorithm to trace a network of filaments in each cloud. We build synthetic maps to assess the completeness limit of our extracted sample and validate our measurements. Our analysis yields a selected sample of 599 filaments with aspect ratios larger than 3 and column density contrasts larger than 0.3. We show that our sample is more than 95% complete for column density contrasts larger than 1, with only 5% of spurious detections. On average, more than 15% of the total gas mass in the clouds, and more than 80% of the dense gas mass, is found to be in the form of filaments, respectively. Analysis of the radial column density profiles of the 599 filaments indicates a narrow distribution of crest-averaged inner widths, with a median value of 0.10 pc and an interquartile range of 0.07 pc. In contrast, the filaments span wide ranges in length, central column density, column density contrast, and mass per unit length. The characteristic filament width is well resolved by Herschel observations, and a median value of 0.1 pc is consistently found using three distinct estimates based on (1) a direct measurement of the width at half power after background subtraction, as well as (2) Gaussian and (3) Plummer fits. The existence of a characteristic filament width is further supported by the presence of a tight correlation between mass per unit length and central column density for the observed filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a catalogue of prestellar and starless cores within the Corona Australis molecular cloud using photometric data from the Herschel Space Observatory. At a distance of d~130 pc, Corona Australis is one of the closest star-forming regions. Herschel has taken multi-wavelength data of Corona Australis with both the SPIRE and PACS photometric cameras in a parallel mode with wavelengths in the range 70 {\mu}m to 500 {\mu}m. A complete sample of starless and prestellar cores and embedded protostars is identified. Other results from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey have shown spatial correlation between the distribution of dense cores and the filamentary structure within the molecular clouds. We go further and show correlations between the properties of these cores and their spatial distribution within the clouds, with a particular focus on the mass distribution of the dense cores with respect to their filamentary proximity. We find that only lower-mass starless cores form away from filaments, while all of the higher-mass prestellar cores form in close proximity to, or directly on the filamentary structure. This result supports the paradigm that prestellar cores mostly form on filaments. We analyse the mass distribution across the molecular cloud, finding evidence that the region around the Coronet appears to be at a more dynamically advanced evolutionary stage to the rest of the clumps within the cloud., Comment: Article Accepted September 2017

The characterization of dust properties in the interstellar medium (ISM) is key for star formation. Mass estimates are crucial to determine gravitational collapse conditions for the birth of new stellar objects in molecular clouds. However, most of these estimates rely on dust models that need further observational constraints from clouds to prestellar and protostellar cores. We present results of a study of dust emissivity changes based on mm-continuum data obtained with the NIKA camera at the IRAM-30m telescope. Observing dust emission at 1.15 mm and 2 mm allows us to constrain the dust emissivity index ($\beta$) in the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) far from its peak emission, where the contribution of other parameters (i.e. dust temperature) is important. Focusing on the Taurus molecular cloud, a low-mass star-forming regions in the Gould Belt, we analyze the emission properties of several distinct objects in the B213 filament: three prestellar cores, two Class-0/I protostellar cores and one Class-II object. By means of the ratio of the two NIKA channel-maps, we show that in the Rayleigh-Jeans approximation the dust emissivity index varies among the objects. For one prestellar and two protostellar cores, we produce a robust study using Herschel data to constrain the dust temperature of the sources. By using the Abel transform inversion technique we get accurate radial $\beta$ profiles. We find systematic spatial variations of $\beta$ in the protostellar cores that is not observed in the prestellar core. While in the former case $\beta$ decreases toward the center, in the latter it remains constant. Moreover, $\beta$ appears anticorrelated with the dust temperature. We discuss the implication of these results in terms of dust grain evolution between pre- and protostellar cores.

Recent studies have suggested that star formation (SF) in dense gas may be governed by essentially the same law in Galactic clouds and external galaxies. This conclusion remains controversial, however, because different tracers have been used to probe the dense gas mass in Galactic and extragalactic studies. We conducted observations of Aquila, Oph., and Orion B in HCN(1-0), HCO$^+$(1-0), and their isotopomers to calibrate the HCN and HCO$^+$ lines used as dense gas tracers in extragalactic studies and to test the possible universality of the star formation efficiency in dense gas, SFE$_{dense}$. H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CN were observed to be good tracers of the filaments detected with Herschel. Comparing the luminosities $L_{HCN}$ and $L_{HCO^+}$ with the reference masses $M_{Herschel}^{Av>8}$, the empirical conversion factors $\alpha_{Herschel-HCN}$ and $\alpha_{Herschel-HCO^+}$ were found to be anti-correlated with the local FUV strength. In agreement with Pety et al. (2017), HCN and HCO$^+$ were also found to trace gas down to Av>2. As a result, published extragalactic HCN studies must be tracing all of the moderate density gas. Estimating the contribution of this moderate density gas from the typical column density PDFs in nearby clouds, we obtained the following $G_0$-dependent HCN conversion factor for external galaxies:$\alpha_{Herschel-HCN}^{fit'}=64\times G_0^{-0.34}$. Re-estimating the dense gas masses in external galaxies with $\alpha_{Herschel-HCN}^{fit'}$, we found that SFE$_{dense}$ is remarkably constant over 8 orders of magnitude in dense gas mass. Our results confirm that SFE$_{dense}$ of galaxies is quasi-universal on a wide range of scales from ~1-10pc to >10kpc. Based on the tight link between SF and filamentary structure found in Herschel studies of nearby clouds, we argue that SFE$_{dense}$ is primarily set by the microphysics of SF in filaments., Comment: A&A accepted for publication

To constrain models of high-mass star formation, the Herschel/HOBYS KP aims at discovering massive dense cores (MDCs) able to host the high-mass analogs of low-mass prestellar cores, which have been searched for over the past decade. We here focus on NGC6334, one of the best-studied HOBYS molecular cloud complexes. We used Herschel PACS and SPIRE 70-500mu images of the NGC6334 complex complemented with (sub)millimeter and mid-infrared data. We built a complete procedure to extract ~0.1 pc dense cores with the getsources software, which simultaneously measures their far-infrared to millimeter fluxes. We carefully estimated the temperatures and masses of these dense cores from their SEDs. A cross-correlation with high-mass star formation signposts suggests a mass threshold of 75Msun for MDCs in NGC6334. MDCs have temperatures of 9.5-40K, masses of 75-1000Msun, and densities of 10^5-10^8cm-3. Their mid-IR emission is used to separate 6 IR-bright and 10 IR-quiet protostellar MDCs while their 70mu emission strength, with respect to fitted SEDs, helps identify 16 starless MDC candidates. The ability of the latter to host high-mass prestellar cores is investigated here and remains questionable. An increase in mass and density from the starless to the IR-quiet and IR-bright phases suggests that the protostars and MDCs simultaneously grow in mass. The statistical lifetimes of the high-mass prestellar and protostellar core phases, estimated to be 1-7x10^4yr and at most 3x10^5yr respectively, suggest a dynamical scenario of high-mass star formation. The present study provides good mass estimates for a statistically significant sample, covering the earliest phases of high-mass star formation. Aims: In this paper we focus on the occurrence of glycolaldehyde (HCOCH2OH) in young solar analogs by performing the first homogeneous and unbiased study of this molecule in the Class 0 protostars of the nearby Perseus star forming region. Methods: We obtained sub-arcsec angular resolution maps at 1.3mm and 1.4mm of glycolaldehyde emission lines using the IRAM Plateau de Bure (PdB) interferometer in the framework of the CALYPSO IRAM large program. Results: Glycolaldehyde has been detected towards 3 Class 0 and 1 Class I protostars out of the 13 continuum sources targeted in Perseus: NGC1333-IRAS2A1, NGC1333-IRAS4A2, NGC1333-IRAS4B1, and SVS13-A. The NGC1333 star forming region looks particularly glycolaldehyde rich, with a rate of occurrence up to 60%. The glycolaldehyde spatial distribution overlaps with the continuum one, tracing the inner 100 au around the protostar. A large number of lines (up to 18), with upper-level energies Eu from 37 K up to 375 K has been detected. We derived column densities > 10^15 cm^-2 and rotational temperatures Trot between 115 K and 236 K, imaging for the first time hot-corinos around NGC1333-IRAS4B1 and SVS13-A. Conclusions: In multiple systems glycolaldehyde emission is detected only in one component. The case of the SVS13-A+B and IRAS4-A1+A2 systems support that the detection of glycolaldehyde (at least in the present Perseus sample) indicates older protostars (i.e. SVS13-A and IRAS4-A2), evolved enough to develop the hot-corino region (i.e. 100 K in the inner 100 au). However, only two systems do not allow us to firmly conclude whether the primary factor leading to the detection of glycolaldehyde emission is the environments hosting the protostars, evolution (e.g. low value of Lsubmm/Lint), or accretion luminosity (high Lint)., Comment: A&A, in press

Herschel observations of nearby molecular clouds suggest that interstellar filaments and prestellar cores represent two fundamental steps in the star formation process. The observations support a picture of low-mass star formation according to which ~ 0.1 pc-wide filaments form first in the cold interstellar medium, probably as a result of large-scale compression of interstellar matter by supersonic turbulent flows, and then prestellar cores arise from gravitational fragmentation of the densest filaments. Whether this scenario also applies to regions of high-mass star formation is an open question, in part because Herschel data cannot resolve the inner width of filaments in the nearest regions of massive star formation. We used the bolometer camera ArTeMiS on the APEX telescope to map the central part of the NGC6334 complex at a factor of > 3 higher resolution than Herschel at 350 microns. Combining ArTeMiS data with Herschel data allowed us to study the structure of the main filament of the complex with a resolution of 8" or < 0.07 pc at d ~ 1.7 kpc. Our study confirms that this filament is a very dense, massive linear structure with a line mass ranging from ~ 500 Msun/pc to ~ 2000 Msun/pc over nearly 10 pc. It also demonstrates that its inner width remains as narrow as W ~ 0.15 +- 0.05 pc all along the filament length, within a factor of < 2 of the characteristic 0.1 pc value found with Herschel for lower-mass filaments in the Gould Belt. While it is not completely clear whether the NGC 6334 filament will form massive stars or not in the future, it is two to three orders of magnitude denser than the majority of filaments observed in Gould Belt clouds, and yet has a very similar inner width. This points to a common physical mechanism for setting the filament width and suggests that some important structural properties of nearby clouds also hold in high-mass star forming regions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Context. "Snow lines", marking regions where abundant volatiles freeze out onto the surface of dust grains, play an important role for planet growth and bulk composition in protoplanetary disks. They can already be observed in the envelopes of the much younger, low-mass Class 0 protostars that are still in their early phase of heavy accretion. Aims. We aim at using the information on the sublimation regions of different kinds of ices to understand the chemistry of the envelope, its temperature and density structure, and the history of the accretion process. Methods. As part of the CALYPSO IRAM Large Program, we have obtained observations of C$^{18}$O, N$_2$H$^+$ and CH$_3$OH towards nearby Class 0 protostars with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer at sub-arcsecond resolution. For four of these sources we have modeled the emission using a chemical code coupled with a radiative transfer module. Results. We observe an anti-correlation of C$^{18}$O and N$_2$H$^+$ in NGC 1333-IRAS4A, NGC 1333-IRAS4B, L1157, and L1448C, with N$_2$H$^+$ forming a ring around the centrally peaked C$^{18}$O emission due to N$_2$H$^+$ being chemically destroyed by CO. The emission regions of models and observations match for a CO binding energy of 1200 K, which is higher than the binding energy of pure CO ices ($\sim$855 K). Furthermore, we find very low CO abundances inside the snow lines in our sources, about an order of magnitude lower than the total CO abundance observed in the gas on large scales in molecular clouds before depletion sets in. Conclusions. The high CO binding energy may hint at CO being frozen out in a polar ice environment like amorphous water ice or in non-polar CO$_2$-rich ice. The low CO abundances are comparable to values found in protoplanetary disks, which may indicate an evolutionary scenario where these low values are already established in the protostellar phase. The radiative feedback of massive stars on molecular clouds creates pillars, globules and other features at the interface between the HII region and molecular cloud. We present here Herschel observations between 70 and 500 micron of the immediate environment of the Cygnus OB2 association, performed within the HOBYS program. All structures were detected based on their appearance at 70 micron, and have been classified as pillars, globules, evaporating gasous globules (EGGs), proplyd-like objects, and condensations. From the 70 and 160 micron flux maps, we derive the local FUV field on the PDR surfaces. In parallel, we use a census of the O-stars to estimate the overall FUV-field, that is 10^3-10^4 G_0 close to the central OB cluster (within 10 pc) and decreases down to a few tens G_0, in a distance of 50 pc. From a SED fit to the four longest Herschel wavelengths, we determine column density and temperature maps and derive masses, volume densities and surface densities for these structures. We find that the morphological classification corresponds to distinct physical properties. Pillars and globules have the longest estimated photoevaporation lifetimes, a few 10^6 yr, while all other features should survive less than that. These lifetimes are consistent with that found in simulations of turbulent, UV-illuminated clouds. We present a catalogue of dense cores in a $\sim 4^\circ\times2^\circ$ field of the Taurus star-forming region, inclusive of the L1495 cloud, derived from Herschel SPIRE and PACS observations in the 70 $\mu$m, 160 $\mu$m, 250 $\mu$m, 350 $\mu$m, and 500 $\mu$m continuum bands. Estimates of mean dust temperature and total mass are derived using modified blackbody fits to the spectral energy distributions. We detect 525 starless cores of which $\sim10$-20% are gravitationally bound and therefore presumably prestellar. Our census of unbound objects is $\sim85$% complete for $M>0.015\,M_\odot$ in low density regions ($A_V\stackrel{<}{_\sim}5$ mag), while the bound (prestellar) subset is $\sim85$% complete for $M>0.1\,M_\odot$ overall. The prestellar core mass function (CMF) is consistent with lognormal form, resembling the stellar system initial mass function, as has been reported previously. All of the inferred prestellar cores lie on filamentary structures whose column densities exceed the expected threshold for filamentary collapse, in agreement with previous reports. Unlike the prestellar CMF, the unbound starless CMF is not lognormal, but instead is consistent with a power-law form below $0.3\,M_\odot$ and shows no evidence for a low-mass turnover. It resembles previously reported mass distributions for CO clumps at low masses ($M\stackrel{<}{_\sim}0.3\,M_\odot$). The volume density PDF, however, is accurately lognormal except at high densities. It is consistent with the effects of self-gravity on magnetized supersonic turbulence. Aims. We measure the deuterium fraction, RD, and the CO-depletion factor, fd, toward a number of starless and protostellar cores in the L1688 region of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex and search for variations based upon environmental differences across L1688. The kinematic properties of the dense gas traced by the N2H+ and N2D+ (1-0) lines are also discussed. Methods. RD has been measured via observations of the J=1-0 transition of N2H+ and N2D+ toward 33 dense cores in different regions of L1688. fd estimates have been done using C17O(1-0) and 850 micron dust continuum emission from the SCUBA survey. All line observations were carried out with the IRAM 30 meter antenna. Results. The dense cores show large (2-40%) deuterium fractions, with significant variations between the sub-regions of L1688. The CO-depletion factor also varies from one region to another (1-7). Two different correlations are found between deuterium fraction and CO-depletion factor: cores in regions A, B2 and I show increasing RD with increasing fd, similar to previous studies of deuterium fraction in pre-stellar cores; cores in regions B1, B1B2, C, E, F and H show a steeper RD-fd correlation, with large deuterium fractions occurring in fairly quiescent gas with relatively low CO freeze-out factors. These are probably recently formed, centrally concentrated starless cores which have not yet started the contraction phase toward protostellar formation. We also find that the deuterium fraction is affected by the amount of turbulence, dust temperature and distance from heating sources in all regions of L1688, although no clear trend is found., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Owing to the paucity of sub-arcsecond (sub)mm observations required to probe the innermost regions of newly forming protostars, several fundamental questions are still being debated, such as the existence and coevality of close multiple systems. We study the physical and chemical properties of the jets and protostellar sources in the NGC1333-IRAS4A proto-binary system using continuum emission and molecular tracers of shocked gas. We observed NGC1333-IRAS4A in the SiO(6-5), SO(6_5-5_4), and CO(2-1) lines and the continuum emission at 1.3, 1.4, and 3 mm using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the framework of the CALYPSO large program. We clearly disentangle for the first time the outflow emission from the two sources A1 and A2. The two protostellar jets have very different properties: the A1 jet is faster, has a short dynamical timescale (<10^3 yr), and is associated with H2 shocked emission, whereas the A2 jet, which dominates the large-scale emission, is associated with diffuse emission, bends, and emits at slower velocities. The observed bending of the A2 jet is consistent with the change of propagation direction observed at large scale and suggests jet precession on very short timescales (~200-600 yr). In addition, a chemically rich spectrum with emission from several COMs (e.g. HCOOH, CH3OCHO, CH3OCH3) is only detected towards A2. Finally, very high-velocity shocked emission (~50 km s^-1) is observed along the A1 jet. An LTE analysis shows that SiO, SO, and H2CO abundances in the gas phase are enhanced up to (3-4)x10^{-7}, (1.4-1.7)x10^{-6}, and (3-7.9)x10^{-7}, respectively. The intrinsic different properties of the jets and driving sources in NGC1333-IRAS4A suggest different evolutionary stages for the two protostars, with A1 being younger than A2, in a very early stage of star formation previous to the hot-corino phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The surroundings of HII regions can have a profound influence on their development, morphology, and evolution. This paper explores the effect of the environment on H II regions in the MonR2 molecular cloud. We aim to investigate the density structure of envelopes surrounding HII regions and to determine their collapse and ionisation expansion ages. The Mon R2 molecular cloud is an ideal target since it hosts an H II region association. Column density and temperature images derived from Herschel data were used together to model the structure of HII bubbles and their surrounding envelopes. The resulting observational constraints were used to follow the development of the Mon R2 ionised regions with analytical calculations and numerical simulations. The four hot bubbles associated with H II regions are surrounded by dense, cold, and neutral gas envelopes. The radial density profiles are reminiscent of those of low-mass protostellar envelopes. The inner parts of envelopes of all four HII regions could be free-falling because they display shallow density profiles. As for their outer parts, the two compact HII regions show a density profile, which is typical of the equilibrium structure of an isothermal sphere. In contrast, the central UCHii region shows a steeper outer profile, that could be interpreted as material being forced to collapse. The size of the heated bubbles, the spectral type of the irradiating stars, and the mean initial neutral gas density are used to estimate the ionisation expansion time, texp, 0.1Myr,for the dense UCHII and compact HII regions and 0.35 Myr for the extended HII region. Two major features of the prestellar CMF are: 1) a broad peak below 1 Msun, presumably corresponding to a mean gravitational fragmentation scale, and 2) a characteristic power-law slope, very similar to the Salpeter slope of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) at the high-mass end. While recent Herschel observations have shown that the peak of the prestellar CMF is close to the thermal Jeans mass in marginally supercritical filaments, the origin of the power-law tail of the CMF/IMF at the high-mass end is less clear. Inutsuka (2001) proposed a theoretical scenario in which the origin of the power-law tail can be understood as resulting from the growth of an initial spectrum of density perturbations seeded along the long axis of filaments by interstellar turbulence. Here, we report the statistical properties of the line-mass fluctuations of filaments in nearby molecular clouds observed with Herschel using a 1-D power spectrum analysis. The observed filament power spectra were fitted by a power-law function $(P_{true}(s) \propto s^{\alpha})$ after removing the effect of beam convolution at small scales. A Gaussian-like distribution of power-spectrum slopes was found centered at -1.6, close to that of the one-dimensional velocity power spectrum generated by subsonic Kolomogorov turbulence (-1.67). An empirical correlation, $P^{0.5}(s_0) \propto ^{1.4 \pm 0.1} $, was also found between the amplitude of each filament power spectrum $P(s_0)$ and the mean column density along the filament $$. Finally, the dispersion of line-mass fluctuations along each filament $\sigma_{\rm M_{line}}$ was found to scale with the physical length $L$ of the filament, roughly as $\sigma_{M_{line}} \propto L^{0.7}$. We present and discuss the results of the Herschel Gould Belt survey observations in a ~11 deg^2 area of the Aquila molecular cloud complex at d~260 pc, imaged with the SPIRE/PACS cameras from 70 to 500 micron. We identify a complete sample of starless dense cores and embedded protostars in this region, and analyze their global properties and spatial distributions. We find a total of 651 starless cores, ~60% of which are gravitationally bound prestellar cores, and they will likely form stars in the future. We also detect 58 protostellar cores. The core mass function (CMF) derived for the prestellar cores is very similar in shape to the stellar initial mass function (IMF), supporting the earlier view that there is a close physical link between the IMF and the CMF. The global shift in mass scale observed between the CMF and the IMF is consistent with a typical star formation efficiency of ~40%. By comparing the numbers of starless cores to the number of young stellar objects, we estimate that the lifetime of prestellar cores is ~1 Myr. We find a strong correlation between the spatial distribution of prestellar cores and the densest filaments. About 90% of the Herschel-identified prestellar cores are located above a background column density corresponding to A_V~7, and ~75% of them lie within filamentary structures with supercritical masses per unit length >~16 M_sun/pc. These findings support a picture wherein the cores making up the peak of the CMF (and probably responsible for the base of the IMF) result primarily from the gravitational fragmentation of marginally supercritical filaments. Given that filaments appear to dominate the mass budget of dense gas at A_V>7, our findings also suggest that the physics of prestellar core formation within filaments is responsible for a characteristic "efficiency" SFR/M_dense ~5+-2 x 10^-8 yr^-1 for the star formation process in dense gas.

The W3 GMC is a prime target for investigating the formation of high-mass stars and clusters. This second study of W3 within the HOBYS Key Program provides a comparative analysis of subfields within W3 to further constrain the processes leading to the observed structures and stellar population. Probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative mass distributions (CMDs) were created from dust column density maps, quantified as extinction Av. The shape of the PDF, typically represented with a lognormal function at low Av "breaking" to a power-law tail at high Av, is influenced by various processes including turbulence and self-gravity. The breaks can also be identified, often more readily, in the CMDs. The PDF break from lognormal (Av(SF)= 6-10 mag) appears to shift to higher Av by stellar feedback, so that high-mass star-forming regions tend to have higher PDF breaks. A second break at Av > 50 mag traces structures formed or influenced by a dynamic process. Because such a process has been suggested to drive high-mass star formation in W3, this second break might then identify regions with potential for hosting high-mass stars/clusters. Stellar feedback appears to be a major mechanism driving the local evolution and state of regions within W3. A high initial star formation efficiency in a dense medium could result in a self-enhancing process, leading to more compression and favourable star-formation conditions (e.g., colliding flows), a richer stellar content, and massive stars. In this paper we present the first observations of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud performed as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Survey (GBS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument. We demonstrate methods for combining these data with previous HARP CO, Herschel, and IRAM N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ observations in order to accurately quantify the properties of the SCUBA-2 sources in Ophiuchus. We produce a catalogue of all of the sources found by SCUBA-2. We separate these into protostars and starless cores. We list all of the starless cores and perform a full virial analysis, including external pressure. This is the first time that external pressure has been included in this level of detail. We find that the majority of our cores are either bound or virialised. Gravitational energy and external pressure are on average of a similar order of magnitude, but with some variation from region to region. We find that cores in the Oph A region are gravitationally bound prestellar cores, while cores in the Oph C and E regions are pressure-confined. We determine that N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ is a good tracer of the bound material of prestellar cores, although we find some evidence for N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ freeze-out at the very highest core densities. We find that non-thermal linewidths decrease substantially between the gas traced by C$^{18}$O and that traced by N$_{2}$H$^{+}$, indicating the dissipation of turbulence at higher densities. We find that the critical Bonnor-Ebert stability criterion is not a good indicator of the boundedness of our cores. We detect the pre-brown dwarf candidate Oph B-11 and find a flux density and mass consistent with previous work. We discuss regional variations in the nature of the cores and find further support for our previous hypothesis of a global evolutionary gradient across the cloud from southwest to northeast, indicating sequential star formation across the region., Comment: 34 pages, 20 figures, 5 tables. New data from the Herschel Space Observatory are broadening our understanding of the physics and evolution of the outer regions of protoplanetary disks in star forming regions. In particular they prove to be useful to identify transitional disk candidates. The goals of this work are to complement the detections of disks and the identification of transitional disk candidates in the Lupus clouds with data from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We extracted photometry at 70, 100, 160, 250, 350 and 500 $\mu$m of all spectroscopically confirmed Class II members previously identified in the Lupus regions and analyzed their updated spectral energy distributions. We have detected 34 young disks in Lupus in at least one Herschel band, from an initial sample of 123 known members in the observed fields. Using the criteria defined in Ribas et al. (2013) we have identified five transitional disk candidates in the region. Three of them are new to the literature. Their PACS-70 $\mu$m fluxes are systematically higher than those of normal T Tauri stars in the same associations, as already found in T Cha and in the transitional disks in the Chamaeleon molecular cloud. Herschel efficiently complements mid-infrared surveys for identifying transitional disk candidates and confirms that these objects seem to have substantially different outer disks than the T Tauri stars in the same molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables

We use PACS and SPIRE continuum data at 160 um, 250 um, 350 um, and 500 um from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey to sample seven clumps in Perseus: B1, B1-E, B5, IC348, L1448, L1455, and NGC1333. Additionally, we identify and characterize the embedded Class 0 protostars using detections of compact Herschel sources at 70 um as well as archival Spitzer catalogues and SCUBA 850 um photometric data. We identify 28 candidate Class 0 protostars, four of which are newly discovered sources not identified with Spitzer. We find that the star formation efficiency of clumps, as traced by Class 0 protostars, correlates strongly with the flatness of their respective column density distributions at high values. This correlation suggests that the fraction of high column density material in a clump reflects only its youngest protostellar population rather than its entire source population. The Chamaeleon molecular cloud complex is one of the nearest star-forming sites encompassing three molecular clouds with a different star-formation history, from quiescent (Cha III) to actively forming stars (Cha II), and reaching the end of star-formation (Cha I). To charactize its large-scale structure, we derived column density and temperature maps using PACS and SPIRE observations from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey, and applied several tools, such as filament tracing, power-spectra, \Delta-variance, and probability distribution functions of column density (PDFs), to derive physical properties. The column density maps reveal a different morphological appearance for the three clouds, with a ridge-like structure for Cha I, a clump-dominated regime for Cha II, and an intricate filamentary network for Cha III. The filament width is measured to be around 0.12\pm0.04 pc in the three clouds, and the filaments found to be gravitationally unstable in Cha I and II, but mostly subcritical in Cha III. Faint filaments (striations) are prominent in Cha I showing a preferred alignment with the large-scale magnetic field. The PDFs of all regions show a lognormal distribution at low column densities. For higher densities, the PDF of Cha I shows a turnover indicative of an extended higher density component, culminating with a power-law tail. Cha II shows a power-law tail with a slope characteristic of gravity. The PDF of Cha III can be best fit by a single lognormal. The turbulence properties of the three regions are found to be similar, pointing towards a scenario where the clouds are impacted by large-scale processes. The magnetic field could possibly play an important role for the star-formation efficiency in the Chamaeleon clouds if proven that it can effectively channel material on Cha I, and possibly Cha II, but probably less efficiently on the quiescent Cha III cloud., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Column-density maps of molecular clouds are one of the most important observables in the context of molecular cloud- and star-formation (SF) studies. With the Herschel satellite it is now possible to determine the column density from dust emission. We use observations and simulations to demonstrate how LOS contamination affects the column density probability distribution function (PDF). We apply a first-order approximation (removing a constant level) to the molecular clouds of Auriga, Maddalena, Carina and NGC3603. In perfect agreement with the simulations, we find that the PDFs become broader, the peak shifts to lower column densities, and the power-law tail of the PDF flattens after correction. All PDFs have a lognormal part for low column densities with a peak at Av~2, a deviation point (DP) from the lognormal at Av(DP)~4-5, and a power-law tail for higher column densities. Assuming a density distribution rho~r^-alpha, the slopes of the power-law tails correspond to alpha(PDF)=1.8, 1.75, and 2.5 for Auriga, Carina, and NGC3603 (alpha~1.5-2 is consistent gravitational collapse). We find that low-mass and high-mass SF clouds display differences in the overall column density structure. Massive clouds assemble more gas in smaller cloud volumes than low-mass SF ones. However, for both cloud types, the transition of the PDF from lognormal shape into power-law tail is found at the same column density (at Av~4-5 mag). Low-mass and high-mass SF clouds then have the same low column density distribution, most likely dominated by supersonic turbulence. At higher column densities, collapse and external pressure can form the power-law tail. We present the results of Herschel HOBYS photometric mapping combined with BIMA observations and additional archival data, and perform an in-depth study of the evolutionary phases of the star-forming clumps in W 48A and their surroundings. Age estimates for the compact sources were derived from bolometric luminosities and envelope masses, which were obtained from the dust continuum emission, and agree within an order of magnitude with age estimates from molecular line and radio data. The clumps in W 48A are linearly aligned by age (east-old to west-young): we find a ultra compact (UC) HII region, a young stellar object (YSO) with class II methanol maser emission, a YSO with a massive outflow, and finally the NH_2D prestellar cores from Pillai et al. This remarkable positioning reflects the (star) formation history of the region. We find that it is unlikely that the star formation in the W 48A molecular cloud was triggered by the UCHII region and discuss the Aquila supershell expansion as a mayor influence on the evolution of W 48A. We conclude that the combination of Herschel continuum data with interferometric molecular line and radio continuum data is important to derive trustworthy age estimates and interpret the origin of large scale structures through kinematic information., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 22 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables

The density and temperature structures of dense cores in the L1495 cloud of the Taurus star-forming region are investigated using Herschel SPIRE and PACS images in the 70 $\mu$m, 160 $\mu$m, 250 $\mu$m, 350 $\mu$m and 500 $\mu$m continuum bands. A sample consisting of 20 cores, selected using spectral and spatial criteria, is analysed using a new maximum likelihood technique, COREFIT, which takes full account of the instrumental point spread functions. We obtain central dust temperatures, $T_0$, in the range 6-12 K and find that, in the majority of cases, the radial density falloff at large radial distances is consistent with the $r^{-2}$ variation expected for Bonnor-Ebert spheres. Two of our cores exhibit a significantly steeper falloff, however, and since both appear to be gravitationally unstable, such behaviour may have implications for collapse models. We find a strong negative correlation between $T_0$ and peak column density, as expected if the dust is heated predominantly by the interstellar radiation field. At the temperatures we estimate for the core centres, carbon-bearing molecules freeze out as ice mantles on dust grains, and this behaviour is supported here by the lack of correspondence between our estimated core locations and the previously-published positions of H$^{13}$CO$^+$ peaks. On this basis, our observations suggest a sublimation-zone radius typically $\sim 10^4$ AU. Comparison with previously-published N$_2$H$^+$ data at 8400 AU resolution, however, shows no evidence for N$_2$H$^+$ depletion at that resolution., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures; to appear in MNRAS

Ionization feedback should impact the probability distribution function (PDF) of the column density around the ionized gas. We aim to quantify this effect and discuss its potential link to the Core and Initial Mass Function (CMF/IMF). We used in a systematic way Herschel column density maps of several regions observed within the HOBYS key program: M16, the Rosette and Vela C molecular cloud, and the RCW 120 H ii region. We fitted the column density PDFs of all clouds with two lognormal distributions, since they present a double-peak or enlarged shape in the PDF. Our interpretation is that the lowest part of the column density distribution describes the turbulent molecular gas while the second peak corresponds to a compression zone induced by the expansion of the ionized gas into the turbulent molecular cloud. The condensations at the edge of the ionized gas have a steep compressed radial profile, sometimes recognizable in the flattening of the power-law tail. This could lead to an unambiguous criterion able to disentangle triggered from pre-existing star formation. In the context of the gravo-turbulent scenario for the origin of the CMF/IMF, the double peaked/enlarged shape of the PDF may impact the formation of objects at both the low-mass and the high-mass end of the CMF/IMF. In particular a broader PDF is required by the gravo-turbulent scenario to fit properly the IMF with a reasonable initial Mach number for the molecular cloud. Since other physical processes (e.g. the equation of state and the variations among the core properties) have already been suggested to broaden the PDF, the relative importance of the different effects remains an open question., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We investigate the origin of complex organic molecules (COMs) in the gas phase around the low-mass Class~0 protostar NGC1333-IRAS2A, to determine if the COM emission lines trace an embedded disk, shocks from the protostellar jet, or the warm inner parts of the protostellar envelope. In the framework of the CALYPSO (Continuum And Lines in Young ProtoStellar Objects) IRAM Plateau de Bure survey, we obtained large bandwidth spectra at sub-arcsecond resolution towards NGC 1333-IRAS2A. We identify the emission lines towards the central protostar and perform Gaussian fits to constrain the size of the emitting region for each of these lines, tracing various physical conditions and scales. The emission of numerous COMs such as methanol, ethylene glycol, and methyl formate is spatially resolved by our observations. This allows us to measure, for the first time, the size of the COM emission inside the protostellar envelope, finding that it originates from a region of radius 40-100 AU, centered on the NGC 1333-IRAS2A protostellar object. Our analysis shows no preferential elongation of the COM emission along the jet axis, and therefore does not support the hypothesis that COM emission arises from shocked envelope material at the base of the jet. Down to similar sizes, the dust continuum emission is well reproduced with a single envelope model, and therefore does not favor the hypothesis that COM emission arises from the thermal sublimation of grains embedded in a circumstellar disk. Finally, the typical scale $\sim$60 AU observed for COM emission is consistent with the size of the inner envelope where $T_{\rm{dust}} > 100$ K is expected. Our data therefore strongly suggest that the COM emission traces the hot corino in IRAS2A, i.e., the warm inner envelope material where the icy mantles of dust grains evaporate because they are passively heated by the central protostellar object., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

The structure and kinematics of Class 0 protostars on scales of a few hundred AU is poorly known. Recent observations have revealed the presence of Keplerian disks with a diameter of 150-180 AU in L1527-IRS and VLA1623A, but it is not clear if such disks are common in Class 0 protostars. Here we present high-angular-resolution observations of two methanol lines in NGC1333-IRAS2A. We argue that these lines probe the inner envelope, and we use them to study the kinematics of this region. Our observations suggest the presence of a marginal velocity gradient normal to the direction of the outflow. However, the position velocity diagrams along the gradient direction appear inconsistent with a Keplerian disk. Instead, we suggest that the emission originates from the infalling and perhaps slowly rotating envelope, around a central protostar of 0.1-0.2 M$_\odot$. If a disk is present, it is smaller than the disk of L1527-IRS, perhaps suggesting that NGC1333-IRAS2A is younger., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

Context: The earliest evolutionary stages of low-mass protostars are characterised by hot and fast jets which remove angular momentum from the circumstellar disk, thus allowing mass accretion onto the central object. However, the launch mechanism is still being debated. Aims: We would like to exploit high-angular (~ 0.8") resolution and high-sensitivity images to investigate the origin of protostellar jets using typical molecular tracers of shocked regions, such as SiO and SO. Methods: We mapped the inner 22" of the NGC1333-IRAS2A protostar in SiO(5-4), SO(65-54), and the continuum emission at 1.4 mm using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in the framework of the CALYPSO IRAM large program. Results: For the first time, we disentangle the NGC1333-IRAS2A Class 0 object into a proto-binary system revealing two protostars (MM1, MM2) separated by ~ 560 AU, each of them driving their own jet, while past work considered a single protostar with a quadrupolar outflow. We reveal (i) a clumpy, fast (up to |V-VLSR| > 50 km/s), and blueshifted jet emerging from the brightest MM1 source, and (ii) a slower redshifted jet, driven by MM2. Silicon monoxide emission is a powerful tracer of high-excitation (Tkin > 100 K; n(H2) > 10^5 cm-3) jets close to the launching region. At the highest velocities, SO appears to mimic SiO tracing the jets, whereas at velocities close to the systemic one, SO is dominated by extended emission, tracing the cavity opened by the jet. Conclusions: Both jets are intrinsically monopolar, and intermittent in time. The dynamical time of the SiO clumps is < 30-90 yr, indicating that one-sided ejections from protostars can take place on these timescales., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics Letter, in press

Utilizing multi-wavelength dust emission maps acquired with $Herschel$, we reconstruct local volume density and dust temperature profiles for the prestellar cores B68 and L1689B using inverse-Abel transform based technique. We present intrinsic radial dust temperature profiles of starless cores directly from dust continuum emission maps disentangling the effect of temperature variations along the line of sight which was previously limited to the radiative transfer calculations. The reconstructed dust temperature profiles show a significant drop in core center, a flat inner part, and a rising outward trend until the background cloud temperature is reached. The central beam-averaged dust temperatures obtained for B68 and L1689B are 9.3 $\pm$ 0.5 K and 9.8 $\pm$0.5 K, respectively, which are lower than the temperatures of 11.3 K and 11.6 K obtained from direct SED fitting. The best mass estimates derived by integrating the volume density profiles of B68 and L1689B are 1.6 M_sol and 11 M_sol, respectively. Comparing our results for B68 with the near-infrared extinction studies, we find that the dust opacity law adopted by the HGBS project, $\kappa_{\lambda} =0.1(\lambda/300 \mu m)^{-2}$, agrees to within 50% with the dust extinction constraints, Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication to A&A

Pillars and globules are present in many high-mass star-forming regions, such as the Eagle nebula (M16) and the Rosette molecular cloud, and understanding their origin will help characterize triggered star formation. The formation mechanisms of these structures are still being debated. Recent numerical simulations have shown how pillars can arise from the collapse of the shell in on itself and how globules can be formed from the interplay of the turbulent molecular cloud and the ionization from massive stars. The goal here is to test this scenario through recent observations of two massive star-forming regions, M16 and Rosette. The column density structure of the interface between molecular clouds and H ii regions was characterized using column density maps obtained from far-infrared imaging of the Herschel HOBYS key programme. Then, the DisPerSe algorithm was used on these maps to detect the compressed layers around the ionized gas and pillars in different evolutionary states. Finally, their velocity structure was investigated using CO data, and all observational signatures were tested against some distinct diagnostics established from simulations. The column density profiles have revealed the importance of compression at the edge of the ionized gas. The velocity properties of the structures, i.e. pillars and globules, are very close to what we predict from the numerical simulations. We have identified a good candidate of a nascent pillar in the Rosette molecular cloud that presents the velocity pattern of the shell collapsing on itself, induced by a high local curvature. Globules have a bulk velocity dispersion that indicates the importance of the initial turbulence in their formation, as proposed from numerical simulations. Altogether, this study re-enforces the picture of pillar formation by shell collapse and globule formation by the ionization of highly turbulent clouds., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Formation of stars is now believed to be tightly linked to the dynamical evolution of interstellar filaments in which they form. In this paper we analyze the density structure and kinematics of a small network of infrared dark filaments, SDC13, observed in both dust continuum and molecular line emission with the IRAM 30m telescope. These observations reveal the presence of 18 compact sources amongst which the two most massive, MM1 and MM2, are located at the intersection point of the parsec-long filaments. The dense gas velocity and velocity dispersion observed along these filaments show smooth, strongly correlated, gradients. We discuss the origin of the SDC13 velocity field in the context of filament longitudinal collapse. We show that the collapse timescale of the SDC13 filaments (from 1 Myr to 4 Myr depending on the model parameters) is consistent with the presence of Class I sources in them, and argue that, on top of bringing more material to the centre of the system, collapse could generate additional kinematic support against local fragmentation, helping the formation of starless super-Jeans cores., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Recent observations of the Rho Ophiuchi cluster with the Herschel Space Observatory allow us to probe the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the brown dwarf population in the far-IR, where the disk emission peaks. We performed aperture photometry at 70, 100, and 160 micron, and constructed SEDs for all previously known brown dwarfs detected. These were complemented with ancillary photometry at shorter wavelengths. We compared the observed SEDs to a grid of synthetic disks produced with the radiative transfer code MCFOST, and used the relative figure of merit estimated from the Bayesian inference of each disk parameter to analyse the structural properties. We detected 12 Class II brown dwarfs with Herschel, which corresponds to one-third of all currently known brown dwarf members of Rho Ophiuchi. We do not detect any of the known Class III brown dwarfs. Comparison to models reveals that the disks are best described by an inner radius between 0.01 and 0.07 AU, and a flared disk geometry with a flaring index between 1.05 and 1.2. Furthermore, we can exclude values of the disk scale-height lower than 10 AU (measured at a fiducial radius of 100 AU). We combined the Herschel data with recent ALMA observations of the brown dwarf GY92 204 (ISO-Oph 102), and by comparing its SED to the same grid of disk models, we derived an inner disk radius of 0.035 AU, a scale height of 15 AU with a flaring index of beta~1.15, an exponent for dust settling of -1.5, and a disk mass of 0.001 MSun. This corresponds to a disk-to-central object mass ratio of ~1%. The structural parameters constrained by the extended SED coverage (inner radius and flaring index) show a narrow distribution for the 11 young brown dwarfs detected in Rho Ophiuchi, suggesting that these objects share the same disk evolution and, perhaps, formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
