It was recently demonstrated that laser filamentation was able to generate an optically transparent channel through cloud and fog for free-space optical communications applications. However, no quantitative measurement of the interaction between the laser-induced shockwave and the aerosol particles was carried out so far, leaving the precise nature of the clearing mechanism up for discussion. A critical question was the maximum distance at which the filament could still act on the aerosol particle. Distances widely exceeding the filament diameter and its energy reservoir exclude other potential clearing effects like shattering or explosion by direct exposure to the laser. Here, we quantify the force exerted by the shockwave on a single aerosol microparticle. The force is measured by observing the ejection and displacement of the particle when trapped in an optical tweezer. We demonstrate that even for distances ranging from 1.5 mm to 5.5 mm away from the filament, thus widely exceeding the filamentary region, an acoustic force of 500 pN to 8 nN (depending on the initial laser power) acts on the aerosol particle and expels it away from the optical trap., Comment: 12 pages in total with 4 figures. Electric currents circulating between charged clouds and the earth surface during lightning discharges are responsible for considerable damages and casualties. It is therefore important to develop better protection methods in addition to the traditional Franklin rod. Here we present the first demonstration that filaments formed by short and intense laser pulses can guide lightning discharges over considerable distances. We believe that this experimental breakthrough will lead to progress in lightning protection and lightning physics. An experimental campaign was carried out on the S\"antis Mountain in Northeastern Switzerland during the Summer of 2021 with a high repetition rate terawatt laser. The guiding of an upward negative lightning leader over a distance of 50 m was recorded by two separate high-speed cameras. The guiding of negative lightning leaders by laser filaments was corroborated in three other instances by VHF interferometric measurements, and the number of X-ray bursts detected during guided lightning events was significantly increased. While this research field has been very active for more than 20 years with many research groups around the world working to achieve this goal, this result demonstrates lightning guiding by lasers, which may lead to the development of a laser lightning rod. Near-ideal four wave mixing dynamics are observed in a nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation system using a new experimental technique associated with iterated sequential initial conditions in optical fiber. This novel approach mitigates against unwanted sideband generation and optical loss, extending the effective propagation distance by two orders of magnitude, allowing Kerr-driven coupling dynamics to be seen over 50 km of optical fiber using only one short fiber segment of 500 m. Our experiments reveal the full dynamical phase space topology in amplitude and phase, showing characteristic features of multiple Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence cycles, stationary wave existence, and the system separatrix boundary. Experiments are shown to be in excellent quantitative agreement with numerical solutions of the canonical differential equation system describing the wave evolution.

We analyse the temporal properties of the optical pulse wave that is obtained by applying a set of spectral $\pi/2$ phase shifts to continuous-wave light that is phase-modulated by a temporal sinusoidal wave. We develop an analytical model to describe this new optical waveform that we name 'besselon'. We also discuss the reduction of sidelobes in the wave intensity profile by means of an additional spectral $\pi$ phase shift, and show that the resulting pulses can be efficiently time-interleaved. The various predicted properties of the besselon are confirmed by experiments demonstrating the generation of low-duty cycle, high-quality pulses at repetition rates up to 28 GHz.

We theoretically propose and numerically validate an all-optical scheme to generate optical pulse trains with varying peak-powers and durations. A shaping of the spectral phase thanks to discrete $\pi/2$ phase shifts enables an efficient phase-to-intensity conversion of a temporal phase modulation based on a two-tone sinusoidal beating. Experiments carried out at telecommunication wavelengths and at a repetition rate of 10 GHz confirm the ability of our approach to efficiently generate a train made of pulses with properties that vary from pulse-to-pulse. The levels of jitters can be accurately controlled.

We investigate in detail the qualitative similarities between the pulse localization characteristics observed using sinusoidal phase modulation during linear propagation and those seen during the evolution of Akhmediev breathers during propagation in a system governed by the nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation. The profiles obtained at the point of maximum focusing indeed present very close temporal and spectral features. If the respective linear and nonlinear longitudinal evolutions of those profiles are similar in the vicinity of the point of maximum focusing, they may diverge significantly for longer propagation distance. Our analysis and numerical simulations are confirmed by experiments performed in optical fiber.

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a new electro-optic linear approach to generate high repetition-rate picosecond pulse trains. This simple cavity-free method is based on a temporal sinusoidal phase modulation combined with a triangular spectral phase processing. Experimental results validate the concept at repetition rates ranging from 10 GHz up to 40 GHz with the generation of background-free pulse trains made of nearly Gaussian Fourier-transform limited pulses.

Real-time access to the internal ultrafast dynamics of complex dissipative optical systems opens new explorations of pulse-pulse interactions and dynamic patterns. We present the first direct experimental evidence of the internal motion of a dissipative optical soliton molecule generated in a passively modelocked erbium-doped fiber laser. We map the internal motions of a soliton pair molecule by using a dispersive Fourier-transform imaging technique, revealing different categories of internal pulsations, including vibration-like and phase drifting dynamics. Our experiments agree well with numerical predictions and bring insights to the analogy between self-organized states of lights and states of the matter., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures
