Histoplasmosis is caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum and is often fatal for individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Delayed diagnosis is a major factor in worsening coinfection, as it can be mistaken for other diseases. Thus, rapid identification of Histoplasma in immunocompromised patients is essential. Molecular techniques, particularly polymerase chain reaction (PCR), were used in this study to identify H. capsulatum in patients coinfected with histoplasmosis and AIDS. Blood samples from 14 individuals with AIDS and disseminated histoplasmosis were collected and analyzed. The PCR method successfully amplified the fungal region in whole blood samples, while PCR-RFLP analysis confirmed a consistent profile in the samples. Genetic sequencing further confirmed the fungal species. Compared to clinical tests such as fungal culture and urinary antigen detection, molecular analysis proved faster, more sensitive, and cost-effective. These molecular markers can potentially be incorporated into routine diagnostics in the future. Further studies are needed to expand and enhance this diagnostic approach, particularly in patients with nonprogressive clinical forms of histoplasmosis.

Trypanosoma rangeli is a protozoan parasite that infects triatomines and mammals in the Americas, producing mixed infections with Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. The former parasite is not pathogenic to humans, but has different levels of pathogenicity, as well as causing physiological and behavioral alterations, to its invertebrate hosts. In this study, we measured locomotory activity, and the glyceride accumulation profile in the hemolymph and fat body, as well as the expression of key genes related to triglyceride metabolism, of Rhodnius prolixus nymphs infected with T. rangeli. We found that the locomotory activity of the insects was correlated with the amount of triglycerides in the fat body. Infected nymphs had increased activity when starved, and also had an accumulation of glycerides in the fat body and hemolymph. These alterations were also associated with a higher expression of the diacylglycerol acyltransferase, lipophorin and lipophorin receptor genes in the fat body. We infer that T. rangeli is able to alter the energetic processes of its invertebrate host, in order to increase the availability of lipids to the parasite, which, in turn modifies the activity levels of the insect. The 2030 Agenda was set in 2015 by the United Nations, with 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Amazonian riverine people are recognized as traditional communities that have their own culture and use the local natural resources of their territories in an ancestral and traditional way. The Sustainable Development Reserve is a Brazilian protected area category which aims to ensure the protection of the natural environment while allowing the residence and the use of these lands by traditional populations. This article reports and discusses the achievements and challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals in two sustainable development reserves in Central Amazonia. The goals were evaluated in the Mamirauá and Amanã Sustainable Development Reserves, due to the large research programs developed in those areas along the past 20 years. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals have a clear connection with the mission of these sustainable development reserves in Central Amazon. Despite the many achievements conquered over the years, there are many challenges yet to overcome; and while striving to achieve the goals from the 2030 Agenda, new challenges will emerge. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine whether a restrictive compared to a liberal fluid therapy will increase postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with severe preeclampsia., Methods: A total of 46 patients (mean age, 32 years; standard deviation, 6.8 years) with severe preeclampsia were randomized to liberal (1500 ml of lactated Ringer's, n=23) or restrictive (250 ml of lactated Ringer's, n=23) intravenous fluid regimen during cesarean section. The primary outcome was the development of a postoperative renal dysfunction defined by AKI Network stage ≥1. Serum cystatin C and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) were evaluated at postoperative days 1 and 2. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02214186., Results: The rate of postoperative AKI was 43.5% in the liberal fluid group and 43.5% in the restrictive fluid group (p=1.0). Intraoperative urine output was higher in the liberal (116 ml/h, IQR 69-191) than in the restrictive fluid group (80 ml/h, IQR 37-110, p<0.05). In both groups, serum cystatin C did not change from postoperative day 1 compared to the preoperative period and significantly decreased on postoperative day 2 compared to postoperative day 1 (p<0.05). In the restrictive fluid group, NGAL levels increased on postoperative day 1 compared to the preoperative period (p<0.05) and decreased on postoperative day 2 compared to postoperative day 1 (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Among patients with severe preeclampsia, a restrictive fluid regimen during cesarean section was not associated with increased postoperative AKI.

BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is responsible for generating DNA lesions and the 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is the most commonly lesion found in DNA damage. When this base is incorporated during DNA replication, it could generate double-strand DNA breaks and cellular death. MutT enzyme hydrolyzes the 8-oxoG from the nucleotide pool, preventing its incorporation during DNA replication. OBJECTIVES To investigate the importance of 8-oxoG in Leishmania infantum and L. braziliensis, in this study we analysed the impact of heterologous expression of Escherichia coli MutT (EcMutT) enzyme in drug-resistance phenotype and defense against oxidative stress. METHODS Comparative analysis of L. braziliensis and L. infantum H2O2 tolerance and cell cycle profile were performed. Lines of L. braziliensis and L. infantum expressing EcMutT were generated and evaluated using susceptibility tests to H2O2 and SbIII, cell cycle analysis, γH2A western blotting, and BrdU native detection assay. FINDINGS Comparative analysis of tolerance to oxidative stress generated by H2O2 showed that L. infantum is more tolerant to exogenous H2O2 than L. braziliensis. In addition, cell cycle analysis showed that L. infantum, after treatment with H2O2, remains in G1 phase, returning to its normal growth rate after 72 h. In contrast, after treatment with H2O2, L. braziliensis parasites continue to move to the next stages of the cell cycle. Expression of the E. coli MutT gene in L. braziliensis and L. infantum does not interfere in parasite growth or in susceptibility to SbIII. Interestingly, we observed that L. braziliensis EcMutT-expressing clones were more tolerant to H2O2 treatment, presented lower activation of γH2A, a biomarker of genotoxic stress, and lower replication stress than its parental non-transfected parasites. In contrast, the EcMutT is not involved in protection against oxidative stress generated by H2O2 in L. infantum. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that 8-oxoG clearance in L. braziliensis is important to avoid misincorporation during DNA replication after oxidative stress generated by H2O2.

Objective : To assess thoraco-abdominal kinematics, respiratory muscle strength and electromyographic activity of the diaphragm (EAdi) in moderate-severe allergic rhinitis (AR) patients. Methods : A cross-sectional study involving 40 individuals (20 in the AR group) and 20 in the control group [CG]) was conducted. Ventilatory pattern and chest wall volume distribution (optoelectronic plethysmography), respiratory muscle strength (manovacuometry and sniff nasal inspiratory pressure [SNIP]), and EAdi were assessed in both groups. Results : The AR patients had impaired thoraco-abdominal kinematics (reduced total chest wall volume) ( p  = 0.004), lower values of total respiratory cycle time ( p  = 0.014) and expiratory time ( p  = 0.006). They also presented an increase of percentage contribution of the abdominal rib cage ( p  = 0.475) and respiratory rate ( p  = 0.019). A positive correlation among pulmonary rib cage tidal volume and MIP (r = 0.544; p  < 0.001), SNIP (r = 0.615; p  < 0.001), and MEP (r = 0.604; p  < 0.001) was observed. After adjusting for age, BMI and gender through multivariate analysis, the individuals with AR presented lower values ​​of MIP (β = -24.341; p < 0.001), MEP (β = -0.277; p  < 0.001), SNIP (β = -34.687; p  < 0.001) and RMS (β = -0.041; p  = 0.017). Conclusions : The individuals with moderate-severe persistent AR had worse respiratory muscle strength, diaphragm activation and chest wall volume distribution with a higher abdominal contribution to tidal volume than the control group. These findings reinforce the notion that the upper and lower airways work in an integrated and synergistic manner.

Background: Little is known about clinical characteristics and management of severe yellow fever as previous yellow fever epidemics often occurred in times or areas with little access to intensive care units (ICU). We aim to describe the clinical characteristics of severe yellow fever cases requiring admission to the ICU during the 2018 yellow fever outbreak in São Paulo, Brazil. Furthermore, we report on preliminary lessons learnt regarding clinical management of severe yellow fever., Methods: Retrospective descriptive cohort study. Demographic data, laboratory test results on admission, clinical follow-up, and clinical outcomes were evaluated., Results: From 10 January to 11 March 2018, 79 patients with laboratory confirmed yellow fever were admitted to the ICU in a tertiary hospital in Sao Paolo because of rapid clinical deterioration. On admission, the median AST was 7,000 IU/L, ALT 3,936 IU/L, total bilirubin 5.3 ml/dL, platelet 74 × 103/mm3, INR 2.24 and factor V 37%. Seizures occurred in 24% of patients, even without substantial intracranial hypertension. The high frequency of pancreatitis and rapidly progressive severe metabolic acidosis were notable findings. 73% of patients required renal replacement therapy. The in-hospital fatality rate was 67%. Patients with diabetes mellitus had a higher case fatality rate (CFR) of 80%, while patients without diabetes had a CFR of 65%. Leading causes of death were severe gastrointestinal bleeding, epileptic status, severe metabolic acidosis, necrohemorrhagic pancreatitis, and multi-organ failure., Conclusions: Severe yellow fever is associated with a high CFR. The following management lessons were learnt: Anticonvulsant drugs in patients with any symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy or arterial ammonia levels >70 μmol/L was commenced which reduced the frequency of seizures from 28% to 17%. Other new therapy strategies included early institution of plasma exchange. Urbanization and anthropogenic activities create many environmental issues in urban water supply reservoirs, especially in metropolitan regions. Thus, this study was carried out aiming to evaluate the variance in the physical-chemical characteristics of bottom sediment along the Lake Guaíba, Brazil. Lake Guaíba is a freshwater lake situated in a metropolitan region in southern Brazil, being the main water supply to the region. Surface sediment was evaluated to pH, electrical conductivity, particle-size, total organic carbon and nitrogen, metals and inorganic elements (Fe, Al, Ca, Ba, Sr, Co, Tl, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Hg), and organic compounds. The sediments in the Lake Guaíba show a wide range in the physical-chemical characteristics. Metals Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni appear in higher concentrations near to the margin of southern Porto Alegre, where there was also more clay plus silt. Sediments of Lake Guaíba have physical-chemical variability by the settle tendency and water flow from the riverine to lacustrine areas. The sediment in Lake Guaíba had a median of: Zn, 132; Cu, 78; Cr, 42; Ni, 28; Pb, 33; Cd, 0.3; and Hg, 0.07 μg/g. Bed sediments of Lake Guaíba are polluted with Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ni, major in the east margin (near to Porto Alegre). The potential toxic metals and organic compounds found in Lake Guaíba are commonly reported in urban regions around the world. Those elements and compounds derive from many anthropic activities, as industries, sewage, and vehicles. With diffuse sources in the region, the pollution control in Lake Guaíba is very complex.

Nitric oxide has been involved in many key biological processes such as vasodilation, platelet aggregation, apoptosis, memory function, and this has drawn attention to the development of exogenous NO donors. Metallonitrosyl complexes are an important class of these compounds. Here, two new ruthenium nitrosyl complexes containing a thiocarbonyl ligand, with the formula cis-[Ru(phen) 2 (L)(NO)](PF 6 ) 3 (phen = phenantroline, L = thiourea or thiobenzamide), were synthesized and characterized by electronic spectroscopy, FTIR, NMR , mass spectrometry and voltammetric techniques. Theoretical calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) were also used and further supported the characterizations of these complexes. An efficient release of nitric oxide by blue light was validated using a NO/HNO probe: 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, known as cPTIO. Interestingly, the complex containing thiourea cleaved DNA even in the dark, while both complexes showed great DNA photocleavage activity in blue light. This process might work mainly through NO and hydroxyl radical production. Additionally, these complexes showed promising vasodilator activity, whose mechanism of action was investigated using N-Nitro-l-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME) and 1H-[1,2,4]Oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) and compared to sodium nitroprusside. Both compounds were indeed NO-mediated heme-dependent activators of soluble guanylate cyclase. Additionally, they did not show any significant cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines U87 and GBM02. The increase of urinary fractional excretion of phosphorus (uFEP) may indicate phosphorus retention before the onset of hyperphosphatemia in the early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The hypothesis of this study is whether uFEP may increase during the early stage of CKD as a compensatory mechanism to prevent hyperphosphatemia as well as whether hyperphosphatemia in the late stages is associated with increase or decrease in uFEP in dogs with naturally occurring CKD; therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the uFEP in CKD dogs with different stages. Forty-nine CKD dogs were included, and they were divided into stage 1 (serum creatinine < 1.4 mg/dL), stage 2 (serum creatinine 1.5 to 2.0 mg/dL), stage 3 (serum creatinine 2.1 to 5.0 mg/dL) and stage 4 (serum creatinine > 5.0 mg/dL), according to the IRIS staging criteria. The stage 3 was subdivided into stage 3-A (serum creatinine 2.1 to 3.5 mg/dL) and stage 3-B (serum creatinine 3.6 to 5.0 mg/dL). The control group comprised 10 dogs, and uFEP ≤ 40% was considered as normal. A progressive increase in uFEP along the progression of CKD was found. However, similar results of uFEP levels were observed in late CKD, since there were no differences between stages 3 (A, B) and 4. Interestingly, some CKD dogs with stage 4 showed normal or reduced uFEP, besides hyperphosphatemia; conversely, some dogs in early CKD had increased uFEP values and normophosphatemia. Our findings suggest that uFEP may act as a compensatory mechanism to avoid the onset of hyperphosphatemia in early CKD, but not in later stages. uFEP assessment may be considered as an additional tool for the diagnostic and monitoring of phosphate disorders in dogs with CKD, since it may help to identify disturbances of phosphorus balance. Sediments are formed by deposition of organic and inorganic particles on depth of water bodies, being an important role in aquatic ecosystems, including destination and potential source of essential nutrients and heavy metals, which may be toxic for living organisms. The Lake Guaíba supplies water for approximately two million people and it is located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sediment pollution in the margins of Lake Guaíba in the vicinity of Porto Alegre city. Surface sediment was sampled in 12 sites to assess the concentration of several elements (C, N, P, Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Mn, Ba, Zn, V, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Cd, Mo, and Se) and the mineralogical composition. Sediment in margins of Lake Guaíba presented predominantly (> 95%) sandy fraction in all samples, but with significant differences between evaluated sites. Sediments in the margins of Lake Guaíba showed indications of punctual water pollution with Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, TOC, TKN, and P, mainly derived from urban streams that flow into the lake. In order to solve these environmental liabilities, public actions should not focus only on Guaíba, but also in the streams that flow into the lake.

Background: Acutely decompensated heart failure (ADHF) presents high morbidity and mortality in spite of therapeutic advance. Identifying factors of worst prognosis is important to improve assistance during the hospital phase and follow-up after discharge. The use of echocardiography for diagnosis and therapeutic guidance has been of great utility in clinical practice. However, it is not clear if it could also be useful for risk determination and classification in patients with ADHF and if it is capable of adding prognostic value to a clinical score (OPTIMIZE-HF)., Objective: To identify the echocardiographic variables with independent prognostic value and to test their incremental value to a clinical score., Methods: Prospective cohort of patients consecutively admitted between January 2013 and January 2015, with diagnosis of acutely decompensated heart failure, followed up to 60 days after discharge. Inclusion criteria were raised plasma level of NT-proBNP (> 450 pg/ml for patients under 50 years of age or NT-proBNP > 900 pg/ml for patients over 50 years of age) and at least one of the signs and symptoms: dyspnea at rest, low cardiac output or signs of right-sided HF. The primary outcome was the composite of death and readmission for decompensated heart failure within 60 days., Results: Study participants included 110 individuals with average age of 68 ± 16 years, 55% male. The most frequent causes of decompensation (51%) were transgression of the diet and irregular use of medication. Reduced ejection fraction (<40%) was present in 47% of cases, and the NT-proBNP median was 3947 (IIQ = 2370 to 7000). In multivariate analysis, out of the 16 echocardiographic variables studied, only pulmonary artery systolic pressure remained as an independent predictor, but it did not significantly increment the C-statistic of the OPTMIZE-HF score., Conclusion: The addition of echocardiographic variables to the OPTIMIZE-HF score, with the exception of left ventricular ejection fraction, did not improve its prognostic accuracy concerning cardiovascular events (death or readmission) within 60 days.

Leptospirosis has been rarely reported in solid organ transplant recipients. We report the first case to our knowledge of leptospirosis in a liver transplant recipient who developed jaundice and renal insufficiency. We describe his favorable clinical progression and discuss the possible mechanisms involved in the more benign disease course. We also review the previously published cases of leptospirosis in solid organ transplant recipients. Although this disease does not appear to present any particularities in this context, we highlight the importance of clinical suspicion in this setting, particularly after liver transplantation., (© 2015 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background. On 8 November 2013, supertyphoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines, severely disrupting health service delivery. Reestablishment of essential services for birthing mothers and their newborns became high priority. Methodology. Following a baseline assessment, an Essential Intrapartum and Newborn Care (EINC) training package was implemented and posttraining assessments (1 and 3 months after training) were undertaken. Results. Baseline assessments (n = 56 facilities) revealed gaps in provider's skill and shortage of life-saving commodities. Facilities lacked newborn bags/masks (9%), towels (6%), and magnesium sulfate (39%). Service providers lacked skills in partograph use (54%), antenatal steroid (44%) use, and breastfeeding initiation (50%). At 3 months after training (n = 51 facilities), dramatic increases in correct partograph use (to 92%), antenatal steroid use (to 98%), breastfeeding initiation (to 86%), kangaroo mother care (to 94%), availability of magnesium sulfate (to 94%), and bag/masks (to 88%) were documented. Gaps persisted for skills in assisted vaginal delivery and removal of placental fragments. Conclusion. Health services were severely disrupted after supertyphoon Haiyan. Our study demonstrates that essential birthing services and quality improvements to strengthen local health systems can be restored in a timely manner even in immediate postdisaster settings.

Sorghum grain yield can be significantly affected by climatic changes, especially drought and high temperature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hybrids of grain sorghum grown under normal irrigation conditions or water stress in order to select those likely to be more tolerant of drought. Forty-nine hybrids were grown in a randomized block design experiment, with three replications. The plots consisted of four rows of 5 m length. Grain yield, weight of 1000 grains, harvest index, days to flowering, and plant height were measured. All of these characteristics were affected by water stress; however, grain yield showed the largest relative reduction. Comparison of the various genotypes showed that some hybrids had an acceptable grain yield under water stress, and maintained a high average yield compared to growth without stress. Several hybrids gave better grain yield than commercial check cultivars: 1170090, 1170092, 1170064, 1167026, 1167064, 1170093, 1167008, 1167029, 0009061, 1167092, 1105647, and 1170019 stood out for their acceptable plant height, earliness, and higher productivity.

Introduction: We investigated whether treatment with terlipressin during recovery from hypotension due to haemorrhagic shock (HS) is effective in restoring cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and brain tissue markers of water balance, oxidative stress and apoptosis., Methods: In this randomised controlled study, animals undergoing HS (target mean arterial pressure (MAP) 40 mmHg for 30 minutes) were randomised to receive lactated Ringer's solution (LR group; n =14; volume equal to three times the volume bled), terlipressin (TERLI group; n =14; 2-mg bolus), no treatment (HAEMO group; n =12) or sham (n =6). CPP, systemic haemodynamics (thermodilution technique) and blood gas analyses were registered at baseline, shock and 5, 30, 60 (T60), 90 and 120 minutes after treatment (T120). After the animals were killed, brain tissue samples were obtained to measure markers of water balance (aquaporin-4 (AQP4)), Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) co-transporter (NKCC1)), oxidative stress (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD)) and apoptotic damage (Bcl-x and Bax)., Results: Despite the HS-induced decrease in cardiac output (CO) and hyperlactataemia, resuscitation with terlipressin recovered MAP and resulted in restoration of CPP and in cerebral protection expressed by normalisation of AQP4, NKCC1, TBARS and MnSOD expression and Bcl-x/Bax ratio at T60 and T120 compared with sham animals. In the LR group, CO and blood lactate levels were recovered, but the CPP and MAP were significantly decreased and TBARS levels and AQP4, NKCC1 and MnSOD expression and Bcl-x/Bax ratio were significantly increased at T60 and T120 compared with the sham group., Conclusions: During recovery from HS-induced hypotension, terlipressin was effective in normalising CPP and cerebral markers of water balance, oxidative damage and apoptosis. The role of this pressor agent on brain perfusion in HS requires further investigation.

Saguinus niger is a primate of the family Callitrichidae, with a geographical distribution limited to northern Brazil, Guyanas, Suriname and Venezuela, where it inhabits rainforests along the coast. Three adult females from the Paragominas Bauxite Mine--PA were used, donated to the Laboratory of Animal Morphology Research (LAMR) of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia. These animals had died of natural causes. The arterial system was filled with latex, and the animals were fixed in 10% formalin. Afterwards, the abdominal aorta and its collateral branches were dissected. The arrangement of the abdominal aorta branches in this species showed a similar arrangement as domestic animals but differing in the formation of the coeliac trunk. The coeliac trunk originates from the abdominal aorta, and from this trunk, we found the hepatic, left gastric and splenic arteries, where the origin of these vessels was variable. These arteries originate from the coliac trunk or a common trunk originating from the coeliac trunk, a characteristic not described in other species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions generated by different software, computed tomography (CT) scanners and slice thicknesses. Ten human dry mandibles were scanned by CT and cone beam CT (CBCT). Digital files were processed in different software systems and 3D reconstructions were performed. Linear measures were made and compared. The results showed significant differences in linear distances between the human dry mandibles and their 3D reconstructions. The relative error from CBCT images ranged from 3.10 to 4.82% and from 3.40 to 5.92% in CT images. It is important to consider that the performance of the software is not just related to the algorithm used, but mostly with its handling, that can facilitate or not the measurement by the operator. In conclusion, the discrepancies were not greater than 0.58 mm, so they should not affect the image quality.

Objectives: To review the most common disorders depicted with conventional videodefecography, and to compare the defecographic abnormalities between symptomatic patients according to their gender and age., Methods: Conventional videodefecography studies of 300 patients (24 men, 266 women; mean age - 57.7) performed in a 32-month period were reviewed for the following parameters: anorectal angle, movement of the pelvic floor, intussusceptions, incontinence and rectocele. The results were analyzed using the chi-square test., Results: Normal findings were observed in 16.7% men and 7.5% women. In women, the most frequent pathological findings were rectocele (62%), descending perineum syndrome (42.8%), intussusceptions (33.8%), incontinence (10.5%), dyskinetic puborectalis syndrome (9.4%) and rectal prolapse (4.5%); in men the most frequent pathology was the dyskinetic puborectalis syndrome (37.5%). This syndrome is more likely in men than in women (p = 0.01; OR 5.78); descending perineum syndrome (p = 0.027; OR 2.8) is more likely to occur in women. Women with perineal descent younger than 50 years frequently present an increased descent during evacuation (81.8%), while those older than 50 years already have a low pelvic floor during rest (60.3%) (p < 0.001; OR 6.8), with little change in evacuation., Conclusion: Videodefecographic findings vary with age and gender.

Introduction: Nowadays it is described a high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which is associated with some clinical manifestations and increased inflammatory activity., Objective: To evaluate the association between vitamin D insufficiency with SLE and inflammatory markers., Methods: Cross-sectional study, in which have been evaluated 45 SLE patients and 24 controls without the disease. Levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] less than 30 ng/mL were considered inadequate. Disease activity was assessed by the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI). High sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were evaluated for verification of the inflammatory status. For assessment of renal involvement, analysis of abnormal elements and urinay sediment (AES), quantitative hematuria and pyuria, proteinuria and creatinine clearance in 24-hour urine and serum anti-double stranded DNA were performed., Results: The prevalence of 25(OH)D insufficiency was 55% in SLE patients and 8% in the controls participants (p = 0.001). The median of 25(OH)D was lower in patients than in controls. Patients with insufficient 25(OH)D had higher levels of IL-6 and higher prevalence of hematuria in the AES. There was no correlation between vitamin D and SLEDAI or lupus nephritis., Conclusion: In our study, vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in patients with SLE and was associated with higher levels of IL-6 and hematuria.

Background: Luminance contrast sensitivity and colour vision are considered to have great predictive value in the evaluation of type 2 diabetic retinopathy. However, these two visual characteristics have seldom been investigated in the same group of patients. In the present study we measured contrast sensitivity and colour vision in a group of patients with type 2 diabetes and correlated the results with estimates of common metabolic markers for the disease. A subgroup of the patients had no clinical signs of retinopathy., Methods: The vision of 27 patients (n = 50 eyes) with type 2 diabetes, with retinopathy (n = 20 eyes), or without retinopathy (n = 30 eyes) were evaluated using two psychophysical tests, the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test (FM 100), and measurements of the luminance contrast sensitivity at 11 spatial frequencies. The results were compared with measurements obtained from an age-matched control group (n = 32), and were correlated with the level of glycated haemoglobin, glycaemic level, and time of disease onset. Signs of retinopathy were identified during the ophthalmological examinations., Results: Contrast sensitivity and colour vision impairments were present at different levels in diabetes patients. Eyes with retinopathy showed more severe vision loss than eyes without retinopathy. The FM 100 test was more sensitive for separation of patients from controls. Colour vision loss had no colour axes preference. The contrast sensitivity test appeared to have some advantage in differentiating patients with retinopathy from patients without retinopathy., Conclusions: Both methods can be useful to follow the visual function of diabetic patients and should be used together to discriminate patients from controls, as well as to identify early signs of retinal damage.

In the last five years, slaughterhouses in Galicia have been producing more than 350,000 tonnes of carcass per year (Ministry of Environmental and Marine and Rural Media (MARM), 2013). The main environmental problems derived from this economic activity are the high consumption of water, the generation of waste water with a high organic load and the intensive use of energy (electricity and fuel) (European Commission, 2005). In this region of Spain, there are seventy-one slaughterhouses but only 10 to 15% of them have a carcass production capacity exceeding 50 tonnes per day (Casares et al., 2006), consequently needing an environmental permit according to the requirements set by the IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive (European Commission, 2008). The slaughterhouses can be specialized in one livestock type, such as pigs, cattle, sheep, goats or rabbits, or they can be polyvalent. In 2009, the most important meat productions were from porcine, poultry and bovine, as they represented 96% of total production in Spain (AICE, 2011). This paper presents a general view of this important sub-sector (according to the Spanish CNAE, National Classification of Economical Activities) of the food and drinking industry in Galicia. The work considers general information about the activity, an exhaustive description of the industrial process (including preliminary operations, processing, final and auxiliary operations), environmental aspects about consumption and emission levels, and finally a proposal of technique candidates to be BAT (best available techniques) for each process stage. This structure has permitted to obtain an inventory of pollution prevention and control techniques, as well as qualitative data of incomes and outcomes of consumptions and emissions respectively. The methodology, which has already been used in previous works (Barros et al., 2008), has been proved to be appropriate to optimize the process considering environmental factors as well as the pollution prevention and control philosophy., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This study aimed at assessing the effects of Kefir, a probiotic fermented milk, on oxidative stress in diabetic animals. The induction of diabetes was achieved in adult male Wistar rats using streptozotocin (STZ). The animals were distributed into four groups as follows: control (CTL); control Kefir (CTLK); diabetic (DM) and diabetic Kefir (DMK). Starting on the 5th day of diabetes, Kefir was administered by daily gavage at a dose of 1.8 mL/day for 8 weeks. Before and after Kefir treatment, the rats were placed in individual metabolic cages to obtain blood and urine samples to evaluate urea, creatinine, proteinuria, nitric oxide (NO), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and C-reactive protein (CRP). After sacrificing the animals, the renal cortex was removed for histology, oxidative stress and NOS evaluation. When compared to CTL rats, DM rats showed increased levels of glycemia, plasmatic urea, proteinuria, renal NO, superoxide anion, TBARS, and plasmatic CRP; also demonstrated a reduction in urinary urea, creatinine, and NO. However, DMK rats showed a significant improvement in most of these parameters. Despite the lack of differences observed in the expression of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) was significantly lower in the DMK group when compared to DM rats, as assessed by Western blot analysis. Moreover, the DMK group presented a significant reduction of glycogen accumulation within the renal tubules when compared to the DM group. These results indicate that Kefir treatment may contribute to better control of glycemia and oxidative stress, which is associated with the amelioration of renal function, suggesting its use as a non-pharmacological adjuvant to delay the progression of diabetic complications., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of virtual three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of human dry mandibles, produced from two segmentation protocols ("outline only" and "all-boundary lines")., Materials and Methods: Twenty virtual three-dimensional (3D) images were built from computed tomography exam (CT) of 10 dry mandibles, in which linear measurements between anatomical landmarks were obtained and compared to an error probability of 5 %., Results: The results showed no statistically significant difference among the dry mandibles and the virtual 3D reconstructions produced from segmentation protocols tested (p = 0,24)., Conclusions: During the designing of a virtual 3D reconstruction, both "outline only" and "all-boundary lines" segmentation protocols can be used., Clinical Relevance: Virtual processing of CT images is the most complex stage during the manufacture of the biomodel. Establishing a better protocol during this phase allows the construction of a biomodel with characteristics that are closer to the original anatomical structures. This is essential to ensure a correct preoperative planning and a suitable treatment.

Delayed, or type IV, hypersensitivity reactions are a useful model to study the effects of new substances on the immune system. In this study, the experimental model of the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction to ovalbumin (OVA) was used to evaluate the immunomodulating effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which is used as an adjuvant therapy in medicine, dentistry, and physical therapy because of its potential anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects observed in several studies. The effects of LLLT (λ 780 nm, 0.06 W/cm(2) of radiation, and fluency of 3.8 J/cm(2)) in reaction to ovalbumin in Balb/C mice were examined after the induction phase of the hypersensitivity reaction. The animals treated with azathioprine (AZA), the animals that received a vehicle instead of ovalbumin, and those not immunized served as controls (n = 6 for each group). Footpad thickness measurements and hematoxylin-eosin histopathological exams were performed. Proliferation tests were also performed (spontaneous, in the presence of concanavalin A and ovalbumin) to determine the production in mononuclear cells cultures of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), INF-γ, and IL-10. In the group of animals irradiated with lasers and in the group treated with AZA, footpad thickness measurements were significantly reduced in comparison to the control group (p < 0.05). This reduction was accompanied by a very significant reduction in the density of the inflammatory infiltrate and by a significant reduction in the levels of TNF-α, INF-γ, and IL-10. LLLT radiation was shown to have an immunomodulating effect on DTH to OVA in Balb/C mice.

The nucleotide excision repair (NER) mechanism is well known to be involved in the removal of UV-induced lesions. Nevertheless, the involvement of this pathway in the repair of lesions generated after DNA oxidation remains controversial. The effects of visible-light-excited methylene blue (MB), known to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), were examined directly in xeroderma pigmentosum (XP)-A and XP-C NER-deficient human fibroblasts. Initially, MB was confirmed as being incorporated in similar amounts by the cells and that its photoexcitation induces the generation of (1)O2 within cells. The analysis of cell survival indicated that NER-deficient cells were hypersensitive to photoactivated MB. This sensitivity was confirmed with cells silenced for the XPC gene and by host-cell reactivation (HCR) of plasmid exposed to the photosensitizing effects of photoexcited MB. The sensitivity detected by HCR was restored in complemented cells, confirming the participation of XPA and XPC proteins in the repair of DNA lesions induced by photosensitized MB. Furthermore, DNA damage (single- and double-strand breaks and alkali-sensitive sites) was observed in the nuclei of treated cells by alkaline comet assay, with higher frequency of lesions in NER-deficient than in NER-proficient cells. Likewise, NER-deficient cells also presented more γ-H2AX-stained nuclei and G2/M arrest after photoactivated MB treatment, probably as a consequence of DNA damage response. Notwithstanding, the kinetics of both alkali- and FPG-sensitive sites repair were similar among cells, thereby demonstrating not only that MB photoexcitation generates nuclear DNA damage, but also that the removal of these lesions is NER-independent. Therefore, this work provides further evidence that XPA and XPC proteins have specific roles in cell protection and repair/tolerance of ROS-induced DNA damage. Moreover, as XPC-deficient patients do not present neurodegeneration, premature aging, or developmental clinical symptoms, the results indicate that defects in the repair/tolerance of oxidatively generated DNA lesions are not sufficient to explain these severe clinical features of certain XP patients., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. The emergence of drug-resistant Leishmania species is a significant problem in several countries. A comparative proteomic analysis of antimony-susceptible and antimony-resistant Leishmania braziliensis (LbSbR) and Leishmania infantum chagasi (LcSbR) lines was carried out using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) followed by mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) for protein identification. Out of 132 protein spots exclusive or up-regulated submitted to MS, we identified 80 proteins that corresponded to 57 distinct proteins. Comparative analysis of data showed that most of the protein spots with differential abundance in both species are involved in antioxidant defense, general stress response, glucose and amino acid metabolism, and cytoskeleton organization. Five proteins were commonly more abundant in both SbIII-resistant Leishmania lines: tryparedoxin peroxidase, alpha-tubulin, HSP70, HSP83, and HSP60. Analysis of the protein abundance by Western blotting assays confirmed our proteomic data. These assays revealed that cyclophilin-A is less expressed in both LbSbR and LcSbR lines. On the other hand, the expression of pteridine reductase is higher in the LbSbR line, whereas tryparedoxin peroxidase is overexpressed in both LbSbR and LcSbR lines. Introduction: Concomitance of chronic periodontitis (CP) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been associated with adverse outcomes. Vitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency my play a role in CP and inadequate vitamin D status is common among patients with CKD., Objective: To examine the relationship between vitamin 25(OH)D and CP in patients with CKD not yet on dialysis., Method: A case-control study was conducted. Cases and controls were defined as patients with CKD with and without CP, respectively. The demographic, clinical and laboratory data were obtained when the patient was attended in the outpatient clinic. CKD was defined and staged according to the NKF QDOKI TM. Serum 25(OH) D levels were measured by chemiluminescence when assessing the CP, which was definined according to the American Academy of Periodontoly (1999). Serum 25(OH)D levels were stratified into deficient (< 14 ηg/mL), insufficient (15-29 ηg/mL) and sufficiency (> 30 ηg/ mL)., Results: A total of 15 cases were compared with 14 controls. Cases had lower median 25(OH)D levels than controls (22.6 versus 28.6 ηg/mL, p < 0.01) and were more likely to be categorized as vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency (93,3% versus 57,1%, p < 0,004). On the other hand, the percentage of controls with vitamin D sufficiency was higher then cases (42,9% versus 6,7%, p < 0,004)., Conclusion: In patients with CKD not yet on dialysis, vitamin D deficiency is associated with CP.

Background/aims: Kidney abnormalities are one of the main chronic complications of sickle cell disease (SCD). The aim of this study is to investigate the occurrence of renal tubular abnormalities among patients with SCD., Methods: This is a prospective study with 26 SCD adult patients in Brazil. Urinary acidification and concentration tests were performed using calcium chloride (CaCl2), after a 12h period of water and food deprivation. Fractional excretion of sodium (FENa), transtubular potassium gradient (TTKG) and solute free water reabsorption (TcH2O) were calculated. The SCD group was compared to a group of 15 healthy volunteers (control group)., Results: Patient`s average age and gender were similar to controls. Urinary acidification deficit was found in 10 SCD patients (38.4%), who presented urinary pH >5.3 after CaCl2 test. Urinary osmolality was significantly lower in SCD patients (355 ± 60 vs. 818 ± 202 mOsm/kg, p=0.0001, after 12h period water deprivation). Urinary concentration deficit was found in all SCD patients (100%). FENa was higher among SCD patients (0.75 ± 0.3 vs. 0.55 ± 0.2%, p=0.02). The TTKG was higher in SCD patients (5.5 ± 2.5 vs. 3.0 ± 1.5, p=0.001), and TcH2O was lower (0.22 ± 0.3 vs. 1.1 ± 0.3L/day, p=0.0001)., Conclusions: SCD is associated with important kidney dysfunction. The main abnormalities found were urinary concentrating and incomplete distal acidification defect. There was also an increase in the potassium transport and decrease in water reabsorption, evidencing the occurrence of distal tubular dysfunction. .

Adverse drug events (ADE) are important causes of impairment of the quality of care for inpatients and therefore should be identified and characterized. Thus, lists of triggers were developed, including the proposal by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. We analyzed the application of these triggers in a university hospital, with the cooperation of pharmacy and medical students, field training, standardized forms and manuals. Here, we present the process of application and performance of these triggers in a teaching hospital. The information on the triggers and ADE were collected through a retrospective chart review of patients discharged from January to June 2008. Four hundred and ninety-seven triggers were identified in 177 charts, and each chart had 2.33 (SD = 2.7) triggers on average. The most frequent triggers were: "antiemetic" (72.1/100 charts), "abrupt cessation of medication" (70.0/100 charts) and "over-sedation, drowsiness, numbness, lethargy, hypotension and fall" (34.6/100 charts). The most effective triggers for capturing ADE were "benzodiazepine antagonist", "antidiarrheal" and "rash", which, when identified in charts, were related to an event. The ADE most commonly found were related to the triggers, "abrupt cessation of medication" (8.3/100 charts), "antiemetic" (4.6/100 charts), "rash" and "anti-allergy" (2.1/100 charts). These results may help to decide which triggers are more useful in each situation.

Unlabelled: Screening Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) allows early interventions, which may alter the natural course of the disease, including cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Screening for Occult Renal Disease (SCORED) is questionnaire with nine questions with different weights, and predicts a 20% chance for CKD if a individual score > 4 points., Aim: Translate to Portuguese, perform the adaptation to the Brazilian culture and validate the original version of SCORED questionnaire., Methods: Steps of the process: Translation from English into Brazilian Portuguese; back-translation into English; application to a population sample; and Proof-reading and completion. The translations and reviews were made by professionals experts in Portuguese and English. The questionnaire was applied to 306 participants and CKD was diagnosed as suggested by the NKF KDOQI™., Results: The participants mean age was 49 ± 13 years, 61% were women, 69% were white, and 68% had education below high school, 38.5% had hypertension, and 12.3% diabetics. The final Brazilian Portuguese version of the SCORED questionnaire was well understood. CKD was diagnosed in 20 (6.5%) of the participants. The Brazilian version of the SCORED questionnaire showed sensitivity of 80%, specificity of 65%, positive predictive value of 14%, negative predictive value of 97%, and accuracy of 66%., Conclusion: The steps used for the translation, transcultural adaptation, and validation allowed a Brazilian Portuguese version of the SCORED questionnaire which was well understood, acceptable and costless, characteristics that make it a useful tool in the identification of people that chance of having CKD.

Background: Renal evaluation studies are rare in American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL). The aim of this study is to investigate whether specific treatment reverts ACL-associated renal dysfunction., Methods: A prospective study was conducted with 37 patients with ACL. Urinary concentrating and acidification ability was assessed before and after treatment with pentavalent antimonial., Results: The patients mean age was 35.6 ± 12 years and 19 were male. Before treatment, urinary concentrating defect (U/Posm <2.8) was identified in 27 patients (77%) and urinary acidification defect in 17 patients (46%). No significant glomerular dysfunction was observed before and after specific ACL treatment. There was no reversion of urinary concentrating defects, being observed in 77% of the patients before and in 88% after treatment (p = 0.344). Urinary acidification defect was corrected in 9 patients after treatment, reducing its prevalence from 40% before to only 16% after treament, (p = 0.012). Microalbuminuria higher than 30 mg/g was found in 35% of patients before treatment and in only 8% after treatment. Regarding fractional excretion of sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, there was no significant difference between pre and post-treatment period., Conclusion: As previously described, urinary concentrating and acidification defects were found in an important number of patients with ACL. Present results demonstrate that only some patients recover urinary acidification capacity, while no one returned to normal urinary concentration capacity.

In the title compound, C(17)H(27)NO(4), which is an hydro-sinapic acid derivative with increased lipophilicity conferred by an additional alkyl chain, the central and the hexyl linear chains contain slightly shorter bond lengths [C-N = 1.316 (2) Å; average linear chain C-C = 1.487 (6) Å] than reported average values [Csp(2)-N = 1.334, C-C for CH(2)-CH(2) = 1.524 and 1.513 Å for CH(2)-CH(3)]. The 4-hy-droxy-3,5-dimeth-oxy-phenyl plane [r.m.s. deviation 0.055 (12) Å] makes an angle of 59.89 (5)° with the central plane of the mol-ecule (composed of the N atom, the carbonyl group and the two methyl-ene C atoms linking the carbonyl group and the ring, [r.m.s. deviation 0.0026 (10) Å], which, in turn, makes an angle of 64.24 (13)° with the essentially planar hexyl chain [r.m.s. deviation 0.035 (18) Å]. The N-H group of the amide group is involved in a bifurcated hydrogen bond towards the hy-droxy and one of the meth-oxy O atoms of the 4-hy-droxy-3,5-dimeth-oxy-phenyl substituent of a neighbouring mol-ecule, forming a two-dimensional network in the (100) plane. In addition, the same hy-droxy group acts as a donor towards the carbonyl O atom of another neighbouring mol-ecule, forming chains running along the b axis.

In the title compound, C(20)H(26)O(2), which is the 6-methyl-ene derivative of androstenedione and a synthetic percursor of exemestane, the steroid A ring approximates to a sofa (or envelope) conformation, with the methyl-ene group adjacent to the link to the B ring lying out of the plane of the other atoms. The B and C rings have slightly flattened chair conformations and the D ring is an envelope, with the CH group forming the flap. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by two distinct C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, involving acidic H atoms close to C=C and C=O double bonds.

The title cholestan, C(28)H(46)O(3), was prepared by epoxidation of 7-norcholest-5-en-3β-yl acetate and crystallized by slow evaporation from an ethano-lic solution. All rings are trans fused. The 3β-acetate and the 17β-cholestane side chain are in equatorial positions. The mol-ecule is highly twisted due to its B-nor characteristic. A quantum chemical ab-initio Roothaan Hartree-Fock calculation of the equilibrium geometry of the isolated mol-ecule gives values for bond lengths and valency angles in close agreement with the experimental ones.

Life cycle thinking (LCT) is one of the philosophies that has recently appeared in the context of the sustainable development. Some of the already existing tools and methods, as well as some of the recently emerged ones, which seek to understand, interpret and design the life of a product, can be included into the scope of the LCT philosophy. That is the case of the material and energy flow analysis (MEFA), a tool derived from the industrial metabolism definition. This paper proposes a methodology combining MEFA with another technique derived from sustainable development which also fits the LCT philosophy, the BAT (best available techniques) analysis. This methodology, applied to an industrial process, seeks to identify the so-called improvable flows by MEFA, so that the appropriate candidate BAT can be selected by BAT analysis. Material and energy inputs, outputs and internal flows are quantified, and sustainable solutions are provided on the basis of industrial metabolism. The methodology has been applied to an exemplary roof tile manufacture plant for validation. 14 Improvable flows have been identified and 7 candidate BAT have been proposed aiming to reduce these flows. The proposed methodology provides a way to detect improvable material or energy flows in a process and selects the most sustainable options to enhance them. Objective: In this study of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP), the severity of the disease and the main periodontal pathogens identified in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were compared with those detected in individuals without systemic disease., Design: Nineteen patients with CP without evidence of systemic disease (control group), 25 patients with CP and CKD who were in the pre-dialysis stages (pre-dialysis group), and 22 patients with CP and CKD who were on renal replacement therapy (RRT group) were examined. The severity of CP was based on the investigation of probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The definition and stage of CKD were based on the criteria proposed by the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative of the National Kidney Foundation. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated using the equation of Modification of Diet in Renal Disease and the identification of microorganisms in subgingival plaque was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)., Results: Candida albicans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola were more common in patients who were on RRT and pre-dialysis than in control subjects. CP was more severe in patients with CKD. A strong association was observed between the frequency of C. albicans (P = 0.056), P.gingivalis (P = 0.008), T. denticola (P = 0.013) and CAL, when CKD patients were compared with the control group., Conclusion: CP is more severe and is associated with increased frequency of C. albicans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, and T. denticola in patients with CKD., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The title hydrated tetrol, C(19)H(32)O(4)·3H(2)O, was synthesized by stereoselective reduction of the compound 3β,5α,6β-trihy-droxy-androstan-17-one. All rings are fused trans. The organic mol-ecules are connected head-to-tail along the c axis via O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Layers of water mol-ecules in the ab plane inter-connect these chains. A quantum chemical ab initio Roothan Hartree-Fock calculation of the isolated mol-ecule gives values for the mol-ecular geometry close to experimentally determined ones, apart from the C-O bond lengths, whose calculated values are significantly smaller than the measured ones, probably a consequence of the involvement of the C-OH groups in the hydrogen-bonding network.

The title compound, C(19)H(30)O(4), is an androstan-17-one derivative synthesized from the dehydro-epiandrosterone through a sequential addition of an oxidant, followed by a trans-diaxial opening of the epoxide generated, with Bi(OTf)(3) (OTf is trifluoro-methane-sulfonate). The six-membered rings have a slightly flattened chair conformation, while the five-membered ring adopts a 14-α envelope conformation. All rings are trans fused. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are connected by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, forming a three-dimensional network. A quantum mechanical ab initio Roothan Hartree-Fock calculation of the free mol-ecule gives bond lengths, valency angles and ring torsion angles of the free molecule at equilibrium geometry (energy minimum) close to the experimental values.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in an experimental model of delayed hypersensitivity reaction (DTH). LLLT has been used clinically to treat numerous diseases and has been tested in different experimental models, but some of its effects have yet to be explained. We assessed the effects of LLLT on DTH to ovalbumin (OVA), a protein that has commonly been used as an antigen to sensitize laboratory animals. This experimental model is broadly used to assess the effects of substances that can potentially modulate the immune system and inflammatory reactions. Balb/C mice were randomly divided into four groups: (I) immunized, untreated, and challenged (n = 6); (II) not immunized, untreated, and challenged (n = 6); (III) immunized, treated with azathioprine (AZA), and challenged (n = 6); and (IV) immunized, treated with LLLT, and challenged (n = 6). Forty-eight hours after the challenge, the animals were submitted to a paw edema test and euthanized for histopathology analysis of their plantar pads. The results obtained in DTH units were as follows: Group I, 19.6 ± 8.9; Group II, 5.8 ± 2.6; Group III, 5.6 ± 2.5; and Group IV, 5.2 ± 2.6. DTH was less intense for the groups treated with AZA and laser compared with Group I (p < 0.05). We observed no statistical difference between the AZA- and LLLT-treated groups. The slides obtained from the footpad specimens showed that AZA and laser acted similarly on the normal pattern of DTH triggering. Our results suggest that treatment with LLLT has an immunomodulatory effect on DTH to OVA.

The title compounds, C(17)H(13)FN(2)O(3) and C(18)H(16)N(2)O(4), are new potent aromatase inhibitors combining the common features of second- and third-generation nonsteroid anti-aromatase compounds. The molecules have a propeller shape, with dihedral angles between adjacent planes in the range 49-86°. A quantum mechanical ab initio Roothaan-Hartree-Fock calculation for the isolated molecules shows values for these angles close to the ideal value of 90°. Docking studies of the molecules in the aromatase substrate show that their strong inhibitor potency can be attributed to molecular flexibility, hydrophobic interactions, heme Fe coordination and hydrogen bonding.
