Abstract

Smart grids technologies are enablers of new business models for domestic consumers with local flexibility (generation, loads, storage) and where access to data is a key requirement in the value stream. However, legislation on personal data privacy and protection imposes the need to develop local models for flexibility modeling and forecasting and exchange models instead of personal data. This paper describes the functional architecture of an home energy management system (HEMS) and its optimization functions. A set of data-driven models, embedded in the HEMS, are discussed for improving renewable energy forecasting skill and modeling multi-period flexibility of distributed energy resources.

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the use of subwavelength optical nanoantennae to assist the gentle ablation of nanostructures directly using ultralow fluence from a Ti: sapphire oscillator through the excitation of surface plasmon waves. We show that this ablation mechanism is the same for metal and dielectric. The analytical solutions of ablation threshold are in excellent agreement with the experiment estimations. Surface plasmon assisted locally enhanced ablation at nanoscale provides a method for nanomachining, manipulation and modification the nanostructures without collateral thermal damage to the materials. 20. Probabilistic Price Forecasting for Day-Ahead and Intraday Markets: Beyond the Statistical Model.

Abstract

Forecasting the hourly spot price of day-ahead and intraday markets is particularly challenging in electric power systems characterized by high installed capacity of renewable energy technologies. In particular, periods with low and high price levels are difficult to predict due to a limited number of representative cases in the historical dataset, which leads to forecast bias problems and wide forecast intervals. Moreover, these markets also require the inclusion of multiple explanatory variables, which increases the complexity of the model without guaranteeing a forecasting skill improvement. This paper explores information from daily futures contract trading and forecast of the daily average spot price to correct point and probabilistic forecasting bias. It also shows that an adequate choice of explanatory variables and use of simple models like linear quantile regression can lead to highly accurate spot price point and probabilistic forecasts. In terms of point forecast, the mean absolute error was 3.03 €/MWh for day-ahead market and a maximum value of 2.53 €/MWh was obtained for intraday session 6. The probabilistic forecast results show sharp forecast intervals and deviations from perfect calibration below 7% for all market sessions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We propose to use diabolo nanoantennas for experimentally investigating the origin of the enhanced third harmonic generation by localized surface plasmon polaritons. In such a geometry, the opposing apexes of bowties are electrically connected by a thin gold nanorod, which has two important functions in discriminating the point of harmonic generation. First, the inserted gold nanorod shifts the field enhancement area to be far away from the dielectric substrate material. Next, the accumulation of free charges at the adjacent bowtie tips produces a strong electric field inside the gold nanorod. The diabolo nanoantennas allow us to examine the contribution of the bare gold susceptibility to the third harmonic conversion. Our results reveal that the bare gold does not significantly enhance the harmonic generation at high pump intensity. From this, we deduce that in regular bowtie antennas, the enhanced harmonic photons mainly arise from the substrate sapphire that is located in the feedgap of the bowtie, where the electric near-field is significantly enhanced by the localized surface plasmons. Abstract

Background Nucleoside/nucleotide analogue (NA) treatment causes selection pressure for HBV strains carrying mutations conferring NA resistance. Drug-resistance mutations occur in the reverse transcriptase (RT) region of the HBV polymerase gene and spontaneously arise during viral replication. These mutations can also alter the hepatitis B surface (HBs) protein and in some cases reduce binding to HBs antibodies. The spread of NA-resistant HBV may impact the efficacy of antiviral treatment and hepatitis B immunization programmes. In this study, we used direct sequencing to assess the occurrence of HBV carrying known mutations that confer NA resistance in the largest cohort of treatment-naive patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) to date.Methods HBV DNA samples isolated from 702 patients were sequenced and the RT region subjected to mutational analysis.Results There was high genetic variability among the HBV samples analysed: A1 (63.7%), D3 (14.5%), A2 (3.3%), A3 (0.1%), B1 (0.1%), B2 (0.1%), C2 (0.9%), D1 (0.9%), D2 (4.6%), D4 (5.1%), D unclassified sub-genotype (0.7%), E (0.6%), F2a (4.6%), F4 (0.4%) and G (0.4%). HBV strains harbouring mutations conferring NA resistance alone or combined with compensatory mutations were identified in 1.6% (11/702) of the patients.Conclusions HBV strains harbouring resistance mutations can comprise the major population of HBV quasispecies in treatment-naive patients. In Brazil, there is a very low frequency of untreated patients who are infected with these strains. These findings suggest that the spread and natural selection of drug-resistant HBV is an uncommon event and/or most of these strains remain unstable in the absence of NA selective pressure.

Abstract

The evolution of the electrical power sector due to the advances in digitalization, decarbonization and decentralization has led to the increase in challenges within the current distribution network. Therefore, there is an increased need to analyze the impact of the smart grid and its implemented solutions in order to address these challenges at the earliest stage, i.e., during the pilot phase and before large-scale deployment and mass adoption. Therefore, this paper presents the scalability and replicability analysis conducted within the European project InteGrid. Within the project, innovative solutions are proposed and tested in real demonstration sites (Portugal, Slovenia, and Sweden) to enable the DSO as a market facilitator and to assess the impact of the scalability and replicability of these solutions when integrated into the network. The analysis presents a total of three clusters where the impact of several integrated smart tools is analyzed alongside future large scale scenarios. These large scale scenarios envision significant penetration of distributed energy resources, increased network dimensions, large pools of flexibility, and prosumers. The replicability is analyzed through different types of networks, locations (country-wise), or time (daily). In addition, a simple replication path based on a step by step approach is proposed as a guideline to replicate the smart functions associated with each of the clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
