In the last few decades the development of ultrafast lasers has revolutionized our ability to gain insight into light-matter interactions. The appearance of few-cycle light sources available from the visible to the mid-infrared spectral range and the development of attosecond extreme ultraviolet and x-ray technologies provide for the first time the possibility to directly observe and control ultrafast electron dynamics in matter on their natural time scale. However, few-fs sources have hardly been available in the deep ultraviolet (DUV; 4-6 eV, 300-200 nm) and are unavailable in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV; 6-12 eV, 200-100 nm) spectral range, corresponding to the photon energies required for valence excitation of atoms and molecules. Here, we generate VUV pulses with $\mu$J energy tunable between 160 and 190 nm via resonant dispersive wave emission during soliton self-compression in a capillary. We fully characterize the pulses in situ using frequency-resolved optical gating based on two-photon photoionization in noble gases. The measurements reveal that in most of the cases the pulses are shorter than 3 fs. These findings unlock the potential to investigate ultrafast electron dynamics with a time-resolution that has been hitherto inaccessible when using VUV pulses.

This paper explores the role of generalized continuum mechanics, and the feasibility of model-free data-driven computing approaches thereof, in solids undergoing failure by strain localization. Specifically, we set forth a methodology for capturing material instabilities using data-driven mechanics without prior information regarding the failure mode. We show numerically that, in problems involving strain localization, the standard data-driven framework for Cauchy/Boltzmann continua fails to capture the length scale of the material, as expected. We address this shortcoming by formulating a generalized data-driven framework for micromorphic continua that effectively captures both stiffness and length-scale information, as encoded in the material data, in a model-free manner. This paper presents a multi-temporal formulation for simulating elastoplastic solids under cyclic loading. We leverage the proper generalized decomposition (PGD) to decompose the displacements into multiple time scales, separating the spatial and intra-cyclic dependence from the inter-cyclic variation. In contrast with the standard incremental approach, which solves the (non-linear and computationally intensive) mechanical balance equations at every time step, the proposed PGD approach allows the mechanical balance equations to be solved exclusively for the small-time intra-cyclic response, while the large-time inter-cyclic response is described by simple scalar algebraic equations. Numerical simulations exhibiting complex cyclic responses, including a 2D problem and an application to a monopile foundation, demonstrate that PGD solutions with a limited number of space-time degrees of freedom may be obtained numerically, only requiring a few modes to accurately capture the reference response., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering

Topological Interlocking Structures (TIS) have been increasingly studied in the past two decades. However, some fundamental questions concerning the effects of Young's modulus and the friction coefficient on the structural mechanics of the most common type of TIS application - centrally loaded slabs - are not yet clear. Here, we present a first-of-its-kind parametric study based on the Level-Set-Discrete-element-Method that aims to clarify how these two parameters affect multiple aspects of the behavior and failure of centrally-loaded TIS slabs. This includes the evolution of the structural response up to and including failure, the foremost structural response parameters, and the residual carrying capacity. We find that the structural response parameters in TIS slabs scale linearly with Young's modulus, that they saturate with the friction coefficient, and that the saturated response provides an upper-bound on the capacity of centrally loaded TIS slabs reported in the literature. This, together with additional findings, insights, and observations, comprise a novel contribution to our understanding of the interlocked structural form.

Using three-dimensional representation of confluent cell layers, we map the amorphous solid to fluid phase transition in active cell layers onto the two-dimensional (2D) site percolation universality class. Importantly, we unify two distinct, predominant, pathways associated with this transition; namely (i) cell-cell adhesion and (ii) active traction forces. For each pathway, we independently vary the corresponding control parameter and focus on the emergent mechanical stress patterns as the monolayer transitions from a glassy- to a fluid-like state. Through finite-size scaling analyses, our results lead us to establish the glassy- to fluid-like transition as a critical phenomena in terms of stress development in the cell layer and show that the associated criticality belongs to the 2D site percolation universality class. Our findings offer a fresh perspective on solid (glass-like) to fluid phase transition in active cell layers and can bridge our understanding of glassy behaviors in active matter with potential implications in biological processes such as wound healing, development, and cancer progression.

Topological Interlocking Structures (TIS) are assemblies of interlocking building blocks that hold together solely through contact and friction at the blocks' interfaces, and thus do not require any connective elements. This salient feature makes them highly energy-absorbing, resistant to crack propagation, geometrically versatile, and re-usable. It also gives rise to failure mechanisms that, differently from ordinary structures, are governed by multiple contact interactions between blocks and frictional slip at their interfaces. Commonly-used modeling tools for structural analysis severely struggle to capture and quantify these unusual failure mechanisms. Here, we propose a different approach that is well suited to model the complex failure of TIS. It is based on the Level-Set-Discrete-Element-Method, originally developed for granular mechanics applications. After introducing the basic assumptions and theoretical concepts underlying our model, we show that it well-captures experimentally observed slip-governed failure in TIS slabs and that it estimates the force-displacement curves better than presently available modeling tools. The theoretical foundation together with the results of this study provide a proof-of-concept for our new approach and point to its potential to improve our ability to model and to understand the behavior of interlocked structural forms.

The recently developed level-set-DEM is able to seamlessly handle arbitrarily shaped grains and their contacts through a discrete level-set representation of grains' volume and a node-based discretization of their bounding surfaces. Heretofore, the convergence properties of LS-DEM with refinement of these discretizations have not been examined. Here, we examine these properties and show that the original LS-DEM diverges upon surface discretization refinement due to its force-based discrete contact formulation. Next, we fix this issue by adopting a continuum-based contact formulation wherein the contact interactions are traction-based, and show that the adapted LS-DEM is fully discretization convergent. Lastly, we discuss the significance of convergence in capturing the physical response, as well as a few other convergence-related topics of practical importance.

Cell layers eliminate unwanted cells through the extrusion process, which underlines healthy versus flawed tissue behaviors. Although several biochemical pathways have been identified, the underlying mechanical basis including the forces involved in cellular extrusion remain largely unexplored. Utilizing a phase-field model of a three-dimensional cell layer, we study the interplay of cell extrusion with cell-cell and cell-substrate interactions, in a flat monolayer. Independent tuning of cell-cell versus cell-substrate adhesion forces reveals that extrusion events can be distinctly linked to defects in nematic and hexatic orders associated with cellular arrangements. Specifically, we show that by increasing relative cell-cell adhesion forces the cell monolayer can switch between the collective tendency towards five-fold, hexatic, disclinations relative to half-integer, nematic, defects for extruding a cell. We unify our findings by accessing three-dimensional mechanical stress fields to show that an extrusion event acts as a mechanism to relieve localized stress concentration.

Under external perturbations, inter-particle forces in disordered granular media are well known to form a heterogeneous distribution with filamentary patterns. Better understanding these forces and the distribution is important for predicting the collective behavior of granular media, the media second only to water as the most manipulated material in global industry. However, studies in this regard so far have been largely confined to granular media exhibiting only geometric heterogeneity, leaving the dimension of mechanical heterogeneity a rather uncharted area. Here, through a FEM contact mechanics model, we show that a heterogeneous inter-particle force distribution can also emerge from the dimension of mechanical heterogeneity alone. Specifically, we numerically study inter-particle forces in packing of mechanically heterogeneous disks arranged over either a square or a hexagonal lattice and under quasi-static isotropic compression. Our results show that, a hexagonal packing exhibit a more heterogeneous inter-particle force distribution than a square packing does. For both packing lattices, preliminary analysis shows the consistent coexistence of outliers (i.e., softer disks sustaining larger forces while stiffer disks sustaining smaller forces) in comparison to their homogeneous counterparts, which implies the existence of nonlocal effect. Further analysis on the portion of outliers and on spatial contact force correlations suggest that the hexagonal packing shows more pronounced nonlocal effect over the square packing under small mechanical heterogeneity. However, such trend is reversed when assemblies becomes more mechanically heterogeneous. Lastly, we confirm that, in the absence of particle reorganization events, contact friction merely plays the role of packing stabilization while its variation has little effect on inter-particle forces and their distribution., Comment: 44 pages, 21 figures

The two-dimensional Loewner exploration process is generalized to the case where the random force is self-similar with positively correlated increments. We model this random force by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $H\geq \frac{1}{2}\equiv H_{\text{BM}}$, where $H_{\text{BM}}$ stands for the one-dimensional Brownian motion. By manipulating the deterministic force, we design a scale-invariant equation describing self-similar traces which lack conformal invariance. The model is investigated in terms of the "input diffusivity parameter" $\kappa$, which coincides with the one of the ordinary Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) at $H=H_{\text{BM}}$. In our numerical investigation, we focus on the scaling properties of the traces generated for $\kappa=2,3$, $\kappa=4$ and $\kappa=6,8$ as the representatives, respectively, of the dilute phase, the transition point and the dense phase of the ordinary SLE. The resulting traces are shown to be scale-invariant. Using two equivalent schemes, we extract the fractal dimension, $D_f(H)$, of the traces which decrease monotonically with increasing $H$, reaching $D_f=1$ at $H=1$ for all $\kappa$ values. The left passage probability (LPP) test demonstrates that, for $H$ values not far from the uncorrelated case (small $\epsilon_H\equiv \frac{H-H_{\text{BM}}}{H_{\text{BM}}}$) the prediction of the ordinary SLE is applicable with an effective diffusivity parameter $\kappa_{\text{eff}}$. Not surprisingly, the $\kappa_{\text{eff}}$'s do not fulfill the prediction of SLE for the relation between $D_f(H)$ and the diffusivity parameter.

Utilizing a 3D mean-field lattice-gas model, we analyze the effect of confinement on the nature of capillary phase transition in granular aggregates with varying disorder and their inverse porous structures obtained by interchanging particles and pores. Surprisingly, the confinement effects are found to be much less pronounced in granular aggregates as opposed to porous structures. We show that this discrepancy can be understood in terms of the surface-surface correlation length with a connected path through the fluid domain, suggesting that this length captures the true degree of confinement. We also find that the liquid-gas phase transition in these porous materials is of second order nature near capillary critical temperature, which is shown to represent a true critical temperature, i.e. independent of the degree of disorder and the nature of solid matrix, discrete or continuous. The critical exponents estimated here from finite-size scaling analysis suggest that this transition belongs to the 3D random field Ising model universality class as hypothesized by P.G. de Gennes, with the underlying random fields induced by local disorder in fluid-solid interactions.

Smart grids technologies are enablers of new business models for domestic consumers with local flexibility (generation, loads, storage) and where access to data is a key requirement in the value stream. However, legislation on personal data privacy and protection imposes the need to develop local models for flexibility modeling and forecasting and exchange models instead of personal data. This paper describes the functional architecture of an home energy management system (HEMS) and its optimization functions. A set of data-driven models, embedded in the HEMS, are discussed for improving renewable energy forecasting skill and modeling multi-period flexibility of distributed energy resources.

We investigate percolation on a randomly directed lattice, an intermediate between standard percolation and directed percolation, focusing on the isotropic case in which bonds on opposite directions occur with the same probability. We derive exact results for the percolation threshold on planar lattices, and present a conjecture for the value the percolation-threshold for in any lattice. We also identify presumably universal critical exponents, including a fractal dimension, associated with the strongly-connected components both for planar and cubic lattices. We experimentally demonstrate the use of subwavelength optical nanoantennae to assist the gentle ablation of nanostructures directly using ultralow fluence from a Ti: sapphire oscillator through the excitation of surface plasmon waves. We show that this ablation mechanism is the same for metal and dielectric. The analytical solutions of ablation threshold are in excellent agreement with the experiment estimations. Surface plasmon assisted locally enhanced ablation at nanoscale provides a method for nanomachining, manipulation and modification the nanostructures without collateral thermal damage to the materials.
