We present the method behind HubPUG, a software tool built for recovering systemic proper motions (PMs) of targets (e.g. clusters or resolved galaxies) in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) fields with two epochs of observations by utilizing stars observed by Gaia as a foreground frame of reference.HST PM experiments have typically relied on the use of distant background galaxies or quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) as stationary sources against which to measure PMs. Without consistent profiles, background galaxies are more difficult to centroid, but benefit on-aggregate from their large numbers. QSOs, though they can be fit with stellar point-spread functions, are sparse, with most fields containing none. Historically, the use of stars as references against which to measure PMs would have been difficult because they have individual PMs of their own. However, Gaia has now provided positions and PMs for over 1.4 billion stars, which are much more likely to be well-imaged in the fields around targets versus background sources, have predictable stellar profiles, and require less observing time per-image for good signal-to-noise. This technique allows us to utilize the power of Gaia to measure the PM of targets too faint for Gaia to observe itself. We have recovered PMs for the Milky Way satellites Sculptor and Draco with comparable uncertainties over HST-only and Gaia-only measurements, limited primarily by the current capabilities of the Gaia data. We also show the promise of this method for satellites of M31 with a new PM measurement for Andromeda VII.

JPCam is a 1.2 Gpixel camera deployed on the 2.6m, large field-of-vie Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST250) at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre. JPCam has been conceived to perform J-PAS, a photometric survey of several thousand square degrees of the northern sky in 56 optical bands, 54 of them narrow-band filters (145 angstrom FWHM), contiguous and equi-spaced between 370 and 920nm, producing a low resolution photo-spectrum of every pixel of the observed sky, hence promising crucial breakthroughs in Cosmology and galaxy formation and evolution. JPCam has been designed to maximize field-of-view and wavelength coverage while guaranteeing a high image quality over the entire focal plane. To this aim, JPCam is equipped with a mosaic of 14 9.2k x 9.2k, 10 mu m pixel, low noise detectors from Teledyne-E2V, providing a FoV of 4.1 square degrees with a plate scale of 0.2267''/pix. In full frame mode, camera electronics allows read times of 10.9s at 633kHz read frequency (16.4s at 400kHz) with a readout noise of 5.5e(-) (4.3e(-)). Its filter unit admits 5 filter trays, each mounting 14 filters corresponding to the 14 CCDs of the mosaic and allowing all the J-PAS filters to be permanently installed. To fully optimize image quality, position of JST250 secondary mirror and JPCam focal plane are maintained optically aligned by means of two hexapod systems. To perform this task, JPCam includes 12 auxiliary detectors, 4 for autoguiding and 8 for image quality control through wavefront sensing., Based on observations made with the JST250 telescope and JPCam at the Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ), in Teruel, owned, managed, and operated by the Centro de Estudios de Fisica del Cosmos de Aragon (CEFCA). We present a kinematic study of six dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way (MW), namely Carina, Draco, Fornax, Sculptor, Sextans, and Ursa Minor. We combine proper motions (PMs) from the $Gaia$ Data Release 3 (DR3) and line-of-sight velocities ($v_{\mathrm{los}}$) from the literature to derive their 3D internal kinematics and to study the presence of internal velocity gradients. We find velocity gradients along the line-of-sight for Carina, Draco, Fornax, and Ursa Minor, at $\geq 1\sigma$ level of significance . The value of such gradients appears to be related to the orbital history of the dwarfs, indicating that the interaction with the MW is causing them. Dwarfs that are close to the MW and moving towards their orbits pericentres show, on average, larger velocity gradients. On the other hand, dwarfs that have recently left their orbits pericentres show no significant gradients. Lastly, dwarfs located at large Galactocentric distances show gradients with an intermediate intensity. Our results would indicate that the torque caused by the strong tidal forces exerted by the MW induces a strong velocity gradient when the dwarfs approach their orbits pericentres. During the pericentre passage, the rapid change in the forces direction would disrupt such gradient, which may steadily recover as the galaxies recede. We assess our findings by analysing dwarfs satellites from the TNG50 simulation. We find a significant increase in the intensity of the detected gradients as the satellites approach their pericentre, followed by a sharp drop as they abandon it, supporting our results for the dSphs of the MW., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. The Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre (OAJ{\dag}1) in Spain is a young astronomical facility, conceived and developed from the beginning as a fully automated observatory with the main goal of optimizing the processes in the scientific and general operation of the Observatory. The OAJ has been particularly conceived for carrying out large sky surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view (FoV): the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. The most immediate objective of the two telescopes for the next years is carrying out two unique photometric surveys of several thousands square degrees, J-PAS{\dag}2 and J-PLUS{\dag}3, each of them with a wide range of scientific applications, like e.g. large structure cosmology and Dark Energy, galaxy evolution, supernovae, Milky Way structure, exoplanets, among many others. To do that, JST and JAST are equipped with panoramic cameras under development within the J-PAS collaboration, JPCam and T80Cam respectively, which make use of large format (~ 10k x 10k) CCDs covering the entire focal plane. This paper describes in detail, from operations point of view, a comparison between the detailed cost of the global automation of the Observatory and the standard automation cost for astronomical facilities, in reference to the total investment and highlighting all benefits obtained from this approach and difficulties encountered. The paper also describes the engineering development of the overall facilities and infrastructures for the fully automated observatory and a global overview of current status, pinpointing lessons learned in order to boost observatory operations performance, achieving scientific targets, maintaining quality requirements, but also minimizing operation cost and human resources., Comment: Global Observatory Control System GOCS

We present GaiaHub, a publicly available tool that combines $Gaia$ measurements with $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ ($HST$) archival images to derive proper motions (PMs). It increases the scientific impact of both observatories beyond their individual capabilities. $Gaia$ provides PMs across the whole sky, but the limited mirror size and time baseline restrict the best PM performance to relatively bright stars. $HST$ can measure accurate PMs for much fainter stars over a small field, but this requires two epochs of observation which are not always available. GaiaHub yields considerably improved PM accuracy compared to $Gaia$-only measurements, especially for faint sources $(G \gtrsim 18)$, requiring only a single epoch of $HST$ data observed more than $\sim 7$ years ago (before 2012). This provides considerable scientific value especially for dynamical studies of stellar systems or structures in and beyond the Milky Way (MW) halo, for which the member stars are generally faint. To illustrate the capabilities and demonstrate the accuracy of GaiaHub, we apply it to samples of MW globular clusters (GCs) and classical dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite galaxies. This allows us, e.g., to measure the velocity dispersions in the plane of the sky for objects out to and beyond $\sim 100$ kpc. We find, on average, mild radial velocity anisotropy in GCs, consistent with existing results for more nearby samples. We observe a correlation between the internal kinematics of the clusters and their ellipticity, with more isotropic clusters being, on average, more round. Our results also support previous findings that Draco and Sculptor dSph galaxies appear to be radially anisotropic systems., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

We have determined bulk proper motions (PMs) for 31 LMC GCs from Gaia eDR3 and Hubble Space Telescope data using multiple independent analysis techniques. Combined with literature values for distances, line-of-sight velocities and existing bulk PMs, we extract full 6D phase-space information for 32 clusters, allowing us to examine the kinematics of the LMC GC system in detail. Except for two GCs (NGC 2159 and NGC 2210) for which high velocities suggest they are not long-term members of the LMC system, the data are consistent with a flattened configuration that rotates like the stellar disk. The one-dimensional velocity dispersions are of order 30 km/s, similar to that of old stellar populations in the LMC disk. Similar to the case for Milky Way disk clusters, the velocity anisotropy is such that the dispersion is smallest in the azimuthal direction; however, alternative anisotropies cannot be ruled out due to distance uncertainties. The data are consistent with a single multi-dimensional Gaussian velocity distribution. Given the non-collisional nature of the LMC disk, this suggests that most, if not all, of the LMC GCs are formed by a single formation mechanism in the stellar disk, despite a significant spread in age and metallicity. We present an analysis of the kinematics of 14 satellites of the Milky Way (MW). We use proper motions (PMs) from the $Gaia$ Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and line-of-sight velocities ($v_{\mathrm{los}}$) available in the literature to derive the systemic 3D motion of these systems. For six of them, namely the Carina, Draco, Fornax, Sculptor, Sextans, and Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph), we study the internal kinematics projecting the stellar PMs into radial, $V_R$ (expansion/contraction), and tangential, $V_T$ (rotation), velocity components with respect to the centre of mass. We find significant rotation in the Carina ($|V_T| = 9.6 \pm 4.5 \ {\rm{km \ s^{-1}}}\>$), Fornax ($|V_T| = 2.8 \pm 1.3 \ {\rm{km \ s^{-1}}}\>$), and Sculptor ($|V_T| = 3.0 \pm 1.0 \ {\rm{km \ s^{-1}}}\>$) dSphs. Besides the Sagittarius dSph, these are the first measurements of internal rotation in the plane of the sky in the MW's classical dSphs. All galaxies except Carina show $|V_T| / ��_v < 1$. We find that slower rotators tend to show, on average, larger sky-projected ellipticity (as expected for a sample with random viewing angles) and are located at smaller Galactocentric distances (as expected for tidal stirring scenarios in which rotation is transformed into random motions as satellites sink into the parent halo). However, these trends are small and not statistically significant, indicating that rotation has not played a dominant role in shaping the 3D structure of these galaxies. Either tidal stirring had a weak impact on the evolution of these systems or it perturbed them with similar efficiency regardless of their current Galactocentric distance., 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Parallaxes measured by the Gaia mission have huge significance for astronomy, but parallaxes in Gaia DR2 are known to have systematic errors that depend on the source position and other quantities. We use the abundant information in faint Milky Way stars, along with the GOG simulation of the Gaia catalog, to probe the spatial dependence of Gaia DR2 parallax systematic errors in an empirical way. The parallax signal, concentrated in thick disk turnoff stars with magnitude G ~ 17, is sufficient to construct maps of the parallax systematic error over the majority of the sky. These maps show a locally regular "waffle pattern" on ~1 degree scales following Gaia scan directions, stronger linear "scar" features, and coherent variations on larger scales. The parallax bias maps also retain traces of astrophysical effects such as dust clouds. The waffle pattern, known from earlier maps of the Magellanic Clouds, extends over the entire sky; its local rms amplitude averages 15 microarcsec and varies by about a factor of two. The strength of this pattern increases by a factor ~6 from magnitude G = 13 to G = 20. Correlations with parallaxes of quasars and of stars with independent distance estimates support our bias estimates. Using similar methods, we map systematic errors in the proper motion and examine the relationship with the parallax systematics. We provide a code package to access and query our bias maps. Prolate rotation (i.e. rotation around the long axis) has been reported for two Local Group dwarf galaxies: Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31, and Phoenix, a transition type dwarf galaxy. The prolate rotation may be an exceptional indicator of a past major merger between dwarf galaxies. We showed that this type of rotation cannot be obtained in the tidal stirring scenario, in which the satellite is transformed from disky to spheroidal by tidal forces of the host galaxy. However, we successfully reproduced the observed Andromeda II kinematics in controlled, self-consistent simulations of mergers between equal-mass disky dwarf galaxies on a radial or close-to-radial orbit. In simulations including gas dynamics, star formation and ram pressure stripping, we are able to reproduce more of the observed properties of Andromeda II: the unusual rotation, the bimodal star formation history and the spatial distribution of the two stellar populations, as well as the lack of gas. We support this scenario by demonstrating the merger origin of prolate rotation in the cosmological context for sufficiently resolved galaxies in the Illustris large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulation., 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear in proceedings of IAU Symposium 344 "Dwarf Galaxies: From the Deep Universe to the Present"

We present a novel analysis of the internal kinematics of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our results are based on the largest sample of spectroscopic data for Fornax stars presently available ($> 2500$ stars), for which we have chemical and kinematic information. We introduce new software, Beacon, designed to detect chemo-kinematic patterns among stars of different stellar populations using their metallicity and velocity along the line of sight. Applying Beacon to Fornax we have detected non-negligible rotation signals around main optical axes of the galaxy, characteristic for a triaxial system partially supported by rotation. The dominant rotation pattern is relatively strong ($\sim 12$ km s$^{-1}$), but the galaxy also shows additional weaker albeit complex rotation patterns. Using the information available from the star formation history of Fornax we have also derived the average age of the different chemo-kinematic components found by Beacon, which has allowed us to obtain its kinematic history. Our results point to a possible major merger suffered by Fornax at redshift $z\sim1$, in agreement with previous works., 17 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed study of the internal structure and kinematics of the core of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr). Using machine-learning techniques, we have combined the information provided by 3300 RR Lyrae stars, more than 2000 spectroscopically observed stars, and the Gaia second data release to derive the full phase space, i.e. 3D positions and kinematics, of more than $1.2\times10^5$ member stars in the core of the galaxy. Our results show that Sgr has a bar structure $\sim 2.5$ kpc long, and that tidal tails emerge from its tips to form what it is known as the Sgr stream. The main body of the galaxy, strongly sheared by tidal forces, is a triaxial (almost prolate) ellipsoid with its longest principal axis of inertia inclined $43^\circ\pm6^\circ$ with respect to the plane of the sky and axis ratios of 1:0.67:0.60. Its external regions are expanding mainly along its longest principal axis, yet the galaxy conserves an inner core of about $500\times330\times300$ pc that shows no net expansion and is rotating at $v_{\rm rot} = 4.13 \pm 0.16$ ${\rm{ km \ s^{-1}}}$. The internal angular momentum of Sgr forms an angle $\theta = 18^\circ\pm6^\circ$ with respect to its orbital angular momentum, meaning that the galaxy is in an inclined prograde orbit around the Milky Way. We compared our results with predictions from $N$-body models with spherical, pressure-supported progenitors and a model whose progenitor is a flattened rotating disk. Only the rotating model, based on preexisting simulations aimed at reproducing the line-of-sight velocity gradients observed in Sgr, was able to reproduce the observed properties in the core of the galaxy., Comment: 37 pages, 26 figures, 2 tables. We present a full dynamical model of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy obtained with the spherically symmetric Schwarzschild orbit superposition method applied to the largest kinematic data set presently available. We modelled the total mass content of the dwarf with the mass-to-light ratio $\Upsilon$ varying with radius and found that Fornax is with high probability embedded in a massive and extended dark matter halo. We produce a comprehensive field star age-metallicity relationship (AMR) from the earliest epoch until ~ 1 Gyr ago for three fields in the Fornax dSph galaxy by using VI photometric data obtained with FORS1 at the VLT. We find that the innermost one does not contains dominant very old stars (age > 12 Gyr), whereas the relatively outer field does not account for representative star field populations younger than ~ 3 Gyr. When focusing on the most prominent stellar populations, we find that the derived AMRs are engraved by the evidence of a outside-in star formation process. The studied fields show bimodal metallicity distributions peaked at [Fe/H] = (-0.95 +- 0.15) dex and (-1.15 or -1.25 +- 0.05) dex, respectively, but only during the first half of the entire galaxy lifetime. Furthermore, the more metal-rich population appears to be more numerous in the outer fields, while in the innermost Fornax field the contribution of both metallicity populations seems to be similar. We also find that the metallicity spread ~ 6 Gyr ago is remarkable large, while the intrinsic metallicity dispersion at ~ 1-2 Gyr results smaller than that for the relatively older generations of stars. We interpret these outcomes as a result of a possible merger of two galaxies that would have triggered a star formation bursting process that peaked between ~ 6 and 9 Gyr ago, depending on the position of the field in the galaxy., 7 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS, in press

The 3D velocities of M31 and M33 are important for understanding the evolution and cosmological context of the Local Group. Their most massive stars are detected by Gaia, and we use Data Release 2 (DR2) to determine the galaxy proper motions (PMs). We select galaxy members based on, e.g., parallax, PM, color-magnitude-diagram location, and local stellar density. The PM rotation of both galaxies is confidently detected, consistent with the known line-of-sight rotation curves: $V_{\rm rot} = -206\pm86$ km s$^{-1}$ (counter-clockwise) for M31, and $V_{\rm rot} = 80\pm52$ km s$^{-1}$ (clockwise) for M33. We measure the center-of-mass PM of each galaxy relative to surrounding background quasars in DR2. This yields that $({\mu}_{\alpha*},{\mu}_{\delta})$ equals $(65 \pm 18 , -57 \pm 15)$ $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ for M31, and $(31 \pm 19 , -29 \pm 16)$ $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ for M33. In addition to the listed random errors, each component has an additional residual systematic error of 16 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$. These results are consistent at 0.8$\sigma$ and 1.0$\sigma$ with the (2 and 3 times higher-accuracy) measurements already available from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical imaging and VLBA water maser observations, respectively. This lends confidence that all these measurements are robust. The new results imply that the M31 orbit towards the Milky Way is somewhat less radial than previously inferred, $V_{\rm tan, DR2+HST} = 57^{+35}_{-31}$ km s$^{-1}$, and strengthen arguments that M33 may be on its first infall into M31. We present the Star Formation History (SFH) and the age-metallicity relation (AMR) in three fields of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. They sample a region spanning from the centre of the galaxy to beyond one core radius, which allows studying galactocentric gradients. In all the cases, we found stars as old as 12 Gyr, together with intermediate-age and young stellar populations. The last star formation events, as young as 1 Gyr old, are mainly located in the central region, which may indicate that the gas reservoir in the outer parts of the galaxy would have been exhausted earlier than in the centre or removed by tidal interactions. The AMR is smoothly increasing in the three analyzed regions and similar to each other, indicating that no significant metallicity gradient is apparent within and around the core radius of Fornax. No significant traces of global UV-reionization or local SNe feedback are appreciated in the early SFH of Fornax. Using N-body simulations we study the formation and evolution of tidally induced bars in disky galaxies in clusters. Our progenitor is a massive, late-type galaxy similar to the Milky Way, composed of an exponential disk and an NFW dark matter halo. We place the galaxy on four different orbits in a Virgo-like cluster and evolve it for 10 Gyr. As a reference case we also evolve the same model in isolation. Tidally induced bars form on all orbits soon after the first pericenter passage and survive until the end of the evolution. They appear earlier, are stronger, longer and have lower pattern speeds for tighter orbits. Only for the tightest orbit the properties of the bar are controlled by the orientation of the tidal torque from the cluster at pericenters. The mechanism behind the formation of the bars is the angular momentum transfer from the galaxy stellar component to its halo. All bars undergo extended periods of buckling instability that occur earlier and lead to more pronounced boxy/peanut shapes when the tidal forces are stronger. Using all simulation outputs of galaxies at different evolutionary stages we construct a toy model of the galaxy population in the cluster and measure the average bar strength and bar fraction as a function of clustercentric radius. Both are found to be mildly decreasing functions of radius. We conclude that tidal forces can trigger bar formation in cluster cores, but not in the outskirts, and thus cause larger concentrations of barred galaxies towards cluster center., 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Andromeda II (And II) has been known for a few decades but only recently observations have unveiled new properties of this dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The presence of two stellar populations, the bimodal star formation history (SFH) and an unusual rotation velocity of And II put strong constrains on its formation and evolution. Following Lokas et al. (2014), we propose a detailed model to explain the main properties of And II involving (1) a gas-rich major merger between two dwarf galaxies at high redshift in the field and (2) a close interaction with M31 about 5 Gyr ago. The model is based on N-body/hydrodynamical simulations including gas dynamics, star formation and feedback. One simulation is designed to reproduce the gas-rich major merger explaining the origin of stellar populations and the SFH. Other simulations are used to study the effects of tidal forces and the ram pressure stripping during the interaction between And II and M31. The model successfully reproduces the SFH of And II including the properties of stellar populations, its morphology, kinematics and the lack of gas. One of the scenarios for the formation of grand-design spiral arms in disky galaxies involves their interactions with a satellite or another galaxy. Here we consider another possibility, where the perturbation is instead due to the potential of a galaxy cluster. Using $N$-body simulations we investigate the formation and evolution of spiral arms in a Milky Way-like galaxy orbiting a Virgo-like cluster. The galaxy is placed on a few orbits of different size but similar eccentricity and its evolution is followed for 10 Gyr. The tidally induced, two-armed, approximately logarithmic spiral structure forms on each of them during the pericenter passages. The spiral arms dissipate and wind up with time, to be triggered again at the next pericenter passage. We confirm this transient and recurrent nature of the arms by analyzing the time evolution of the pitch angle and the arm strength. We find that the strongest arms are formed on the tightest orbit, however they wind up rather quickly and are disturbed by another pericenter passage. The arms on the most extended orbit, which we analyze in more detail, wind up slowly and survive for the longest time. Measurements of the pattern speed of the arms indicate that they are kinematic density waves. We attempt a comparison with observations by selecting grand-design spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Among those, we find nine examples bearing no signs of recent interactions or the presence of companions. We analyze in detail the spatial distribution and kinematic properties of two different stellar populations in Andromeda II (And II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We obtained their detailed surface density maps, together with their radial density profiles. The two populations differ not only in age and metallicity, but also in their spatial distribution and kinematics. Old stars ($\gtrsim 11$ Gyr) follow a round distribution well fitted by truncated density profiles. These stars rotate around the projected optical major axis of the galaxy with line-of-sight velocities $v_{los}(r_h) = 16 \pm 3$ km s$^{-1}$ and a velocity gradient of $2.06 \pm 0.21$ km s$^{-1}$ arcmin$^{-1}$. Intermediate-age stars ($\lesssim 9$ Gyr) concentrate in the centre of the galaxy and form an elongated structure extending along the projected optical major axis. This structure appears to rotate with a velocity gradient of $2.24 \pm 0.22$ km s$^{-1}$ arcmin$^{-1}$, and around the optical minor axis. The centres of rotation and kinetic position angles (PA$_{\rm kin}$) of both populations differ. For intermediate-age stars we obtained PA$_{\rm kin} = 18^\circ \pm 2^\circ$ and for the old ones PA$_{\rm kin} = 63^\circ \pm 3^\circ$ in good agreement with photometric PA measured from isopleths fitted to the photometry. We conclude that the two stellar populations may not be fully relaxed and thus be the result of a merger occurred at redshift $z\sim 1.75$., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables. We present a comprehensive and detailed study of the stellar populations of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We analyse their spatial distributions along the main body of the galaxy, obtaining their surface density maps, together with their radial density profiles. Results are based on the largest and most complete catalogue of stars in Fornax, with more than $3.5\times10^{5}$ stars covering the main body of the galaxy up to $V \sim 24$. We find a differentiated structure in Fornax depending on the stellar ages. Old stars ($\gtrsim 10$ Gyr) follow an elliptical distribution well fitted by King profiles with relatively large core radius ($r_{\rm c} = 760\pm60$ pc). On another hand, young populations ($\lesssim 3$ Gyr) concentrate in the central region of the galaxy ($r_{\rm c} = 210\pm10$ pc), and are better fitted by Sersic profiles with $0.8 < n < 1.2$, indicating some discy shape. These stars show strong asymmetries and substructures not aligned with the main optical axes of Fornax. This together with the observed differences between metallicity and age distribution maps strongly suggests accretion of material with different angular momentum. Using N-body simulations we study the origin of prolate rotation recently detected in the kinematic data for And II, a dSph satellite of M31. We propose an evolutionary model for the origin of And II involving a merger between two disky dwarf galaxies whose structural parameters differ only in their disk scale lengths. The dwarfs are placed on a radial orbit towards each other with their angular momenta inclined by 45 deg to the orbital plane and by 90 deg with respect to each other. After 5 Gyr of evolution the merger remnant forms a stable triaxial galaxy with rotation only around the longest axis. The origin of this rotation is naturally explained as due to the symmetry of the initial configuration which leads to the conservation of angular momentum components along the direction of the merger. The stars originating from the two dwarfs show significantly different surface density profiles while having very similar kinematics in agreement with the properties of separate stellar populations in And II. We also study an alternative scenario for the formation of And II, via tidal stirring of a disky dwarf galaxy. While intrinsic rotation occurs naturally in this model as a remnant of the initial rotation of the disk, it is mostly around the shortest axis of the stellar component. The rotation around the longest axis is induced only occasionally and remains much smaller that the system's velocity dispersion. We conclude that although tidal origin of the velocity distribution in And II cannot be excluded, it is much more naturally explained within the scenario involving a past merger event. Thus, in principle, the presence of prolate rotation in dSph galaxies of the Local Group and beyond may be used as an indicator of major mergers in their history or even as a way to distinguish between the two scenarios of their formation., 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present an evolutionary model for the origin of Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31. The model is an extension of the scenario proposed by Łokas et al. (2014) involving a major merger between two gas-rich disky dwarf galaxies.
