La información interoceptiva consiste en focalizar la atención de la persona sobre sus procesos corporales internos, por ejemplo, las sensaciones gastrointestinales, cardiacas y respiratorias. Existen diferentes cuestionarios para evaluar la sensibilidad interoceptiva y el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las propiedades psicométricas del Cuestionario de Percepción Corporal en su versión corta (BPQ-sf). Participaron 276 adultos entre los 18 y 77 años. Se utilizó el BPQ-sf adaptado por Cabrera y Colaboradores (2018) en una versión online. Los resultados demuestran que el modelo de tres factores presentado por Cabrera y colaboradores tiene adecuados indicadores de ajuste. Sin embargo, en el presente estudio propone una estructura más simple, eliminando la carga cruzada del ítem 41, lo que amplía su uso a contextos clínico por mayor facilidad de interpretación.

Background: Catheter related thrombosis (CRT) is the most frequent non-infectious complication associated with central venous access devices (CVAD), with a reported incidence between 13 % and 66 % in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, respectively, with several factors influencing its development. Methods: CRT events recorded in TESEO, an international, multicentric, and prospective cancer-associated thrombosis registry were assessed. Descriptive analyses were conducted. Results: Between July 2018 and December 2023, 2,567 patients were included in TESEO. Of these, 245 patients developed CRT and were included in this analysis. Mean age was 60.5 years (SD 12.3). Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) were present in 42.1%, totally implanted ports (PORT) in 40.9% while 17% had missing data. The most common reported comorbidities were arterial hypertension (28.6%) and dyslipidemia (28.2%). Other thromboembolism associated risk factors were present in ≤10% of patients.Venous thromboembolism (VTE) related symptoms occurred in 70.2% of cases at presentation. Pulmonary embolism (PE) was present in 6.5%, being clinically suspected in 56.2% of cases. The diagnosis was mainly unilateral (81.3%) and 50% were central. Arterial and venous rethrombosis was present in 0.8% and 4.9% of cases respectively. Minor bleeding episodes occurred in 2.5% of cases, while major/clinically relevant episodes were present in 3.6%. Conclusions: Usual VTE associated risk factors were infrequent in the TESEO registry population. CRT was symptomatic in most cases, with reduced complication rates after treatment.

Plant defensins have attracted much attention in the development of new antimicrobials. Yet the elucidation of their modes of action against bacterial pathogens is still incipient. The available recombinant systems to obtain plant defensin mutants with enhanced or optimized antibacterial activity may help to accelerate the knowledge of their action mechanisms and their applications against pathogens. In this work, the point mutant defensin K45E (J1-1_K45E) was obtained by the same recombinant system as J1-1 defensin. The characterized peptide conserved antibacterial activity against the gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and showed a dose improvement relative to J1-1. Furthermore, the mutant J1-1_K45E exhibited a gain in function against the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, to correlate structural changes and antibacterial activity, two properties involved in defensins’ modes of action were measured. First, the mutant J1-1_K45E which oligomerizes in a distinct pattern was compared with J1-1 and secondly, J1-1_K45E shows a distinct lipid binding profile because it binds preferentially to phosphatidylserine. Together, our findings support the idea that amino acid sequence variability in plant defensins superfamily can generate major functional changes, and highlight the relevant role of charged residues, beyond the g-core loop, in the improvement of J1-1 antibacterial activity.

Abstract Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) form a critical component of Space Weather. The complex, intertwined dynamics of SEP sources, acceleration, and transport make their forecasting very challenging. Yet, information about SEP arrival and their properties (e.g., peak flux) is crucial for space exploration on many fronts. We have recently introduced a novel probabilistic ensemble model called the Multivariate Ensemble of Models for Probabilistic Forecast of Solar Energetic Particles (MEMPSEP). Its primary aim is to forecast the occurrence and physical properties of SEPs. The occurrence forecasting, thoroughly discussed in a preceding paper (MEMPSEP‐I by Chatterjee et al., 2024a, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023sw003568), is complemented by the work presented here, which focuses on forecasting the physical properties of SEPs. The MEMPSEP model relies on an ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks, which leverage a multi‐variate data set comprising full‐disc magnetogram sequences and numerous derived and in‐situ data from various sources (MEMPSEP‐III by Moreland et al., 2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023SW003765). Skill scores demonstrate that MEMPSEP exhibits improved predictions on SEP properties for the test set data with SEP occurrence probability above 50%, compared to those with a probability below 50%. Results present a promising approach to address the challenging task of forecasting SEP physical properties, thus improving our forecasting capabilities and advancing our understanding of the dominant parameters and processes that govern SEP production.

Abstract The Sun continuously affects the interplanetary environment through a host of interconnected and dynamic physical processes. Solar flares, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), and Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs) are among the key drivers of space weather in the near‐Earth environment and beyond. While some CMEs and flares are associated with intense SEPs, some show little to no SEP association. To date, robust long‐term (hours‐days) forecasting of SEP occurrence and associated properties (e.g., onset, peak intensities) does not effectively exist and the search for such development continues. Through an Operations‐2‐Research support, we developed a self‐contained model that utilizes a comprehensive data set and provides a probabilistic forecast for SEP event occurrence and its properties. The model is named Multivariate Ensemble of Models for Probabilistic Forecast of Solar Energetic Particles (MEMPSEP). MEMPSEP workhorse is an ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks that ingests a comprehensive data set (MEMPSEP‐III by Moreland et al. (2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023SW003765)) of full‐disc magnetogram‐sequences and in situ data from different sources to forecast the occurrence (MEMPSEP‐I—this work) and properties (MEMPSEP‐II by Dayeh et al. (2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023SW003697)) of a SEP event. This work focuses on estimating true SEP occurrence probabilities achieving a 2.5% improvement in reliability and a Brier score of 0.14. The outcome provides flexibility for the end‐users to determine their own acceptable level of risk, rather than imposing a detection threshold that optimizes an arbitrary binary classification metric. Furthermore, the model‐ensemble, trained to utilize the large class‐imbalance between events and non‐events, provides a clear measure of uncertainty in our forecast.

Abstract We introduce a new multivariate data set that utilizes multiple spacecraft collecting in‐situ and remote sensing heliospheric measurements shown to be linked to physical processes responsible for generating solar energetic particles (SEPs). Using the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) flare event list from Solar Cycle (SC) 23 and part of SC 24 (1998–2013), we identify 252 solar events (>C‐class flares) that produce SEPs and 17,542 events that do not. For each identified event, we acquire the local plasma properties at 1 au, such as energetic proton and electron data, upstream solar wind conditions, and the interplanetary magnetic field vector quantities using various instruments onboard GOES and the Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft. We also collect remote sensing data from instruments onboard the Solar Dynamic Observatory, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and the Wind solar radio instrument WAVES. The data set is designed to allow for variations of the inputs and feature sets for machine learning (ML) in heliophysics and has a specific purpose for forecasting the occurrence of SEP events and their subsequent properties. This paper describes a data set created from multiple publicly available observation sources that is validated, cleaned, and carefully curated for our ML pipeline. The data set has been used to drive the newly‐developed Multivariate Ensemble of Models for Probabilistic Forecast of SEPs (MEMPSEP; see MEMPSEP‐I (Chatterjee et al., 2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023SW003568) and MEMPSEP‐II (Dayeh et al., 2024, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023SW003697) for accompanying papers).

We present a case of obstruction in the third portion of the duodenum secondary to a phytobezoar in an adult patient with no surgical history and without a vegan diet. High intestinal obstruction due to a phytobezoar is rarely described in the literature, posing a diagnostic challenge when evaluating potential differentials in the emergency setting. Subsequently, we conduct a review focusing on tomographic findings and the surgical specimen, highlighting key points to consider when addressing such pathologies.

Abstract Agricultural intensification and expansion are the main drivers of biodiversity loss that continue to increase this century, especially in South America. International markets and global policy provide incentives and frameworks to address this, but these are unlikely to be effective unless farmers on the ground are enabled and motivated to respond to them by developing long‐term solutions that fit their production systems and local contexts. Here, we use a multi‐actor transdisciplinary approach to co‐design and test agroecological innovations suitable for intensive, exporting South American fruit farms. We focus on highly biodiverse regions experiencing habitat loss in the Mediterranean and dry tropical forest regions of Chile and Brazil, respectively. The innovations were designed to support local biodiversity without compromising productivity or quality. Fourteen farmers participated throughout the project, covering a total of 4178 ha of intensive table grape, mango and cherry production. All were under pressure from buyers to report action on biodiversity. Farmers worked with researchers and industry representatives through an iterative process of dialogues and workshops to select, co‐design and implement three agroecological innovations: perches for birds of prey, cover crops and native hedgerows. Farmers became engaged in monitoring their effectiveness and redesigning them to suit local contexts. We develop an extensive set of resources for ongoing dissemination, including an online sustainability metric to report the practices carried out. Eight farms continued to implement at least one agroecological innovation beyond the end of the project, motivated by its fit to their management system and their ability to report positive actions in their supply chains. Policy implications. Our model of knowledge co‐production demonstrates how transdisciplinary research in agriculture, fully localised in a particular food‐producing context, can enable farmers in the global South to engage with biodiversity conservation in response to top‐down market signals incentivising sustainability. We argue that many top‐down efforts to enhance the sustainability of food supply chains, whether through market incentives, voluntary codes or trade regulations, require locally based knowledge co‐production, in which multiple stakeholders from agriculture and the food industry can benefit from working with locally based researchers. This paper aims to estimate the three-phase voltage sensitivity matrix and the network topology of a low-voltage distribution network from smart meter data, which measures voltage magnitude, current magnitude, and power factor with a lead/lag indicator. The targeted networks are three-phase networks with single-phase loads. Understanding network sensitivity and topology is crucial for fault detection, unmetered load identification, and addressing Dynamic Operating Envelope problems. The problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem to estimate both the three-phase voltage sensitivity and the low-voltage transformer voltage. The estimated voltage sensitivity is used to further identify the network topology, by implementing an enhanced Recursive-Grouping and Backtracking algorithm, as well as a candidate topology selection technique. The proposed method is tested on the 55-node European feeder and several synthetic networks. Compared to the state-of-the-art, the results show a four-fold improvement in the accuracy of voltage sensitivity estimation and substantially fewer mistakes in the topology estimates. The result underscores the efficacy of a three-phase network model and voltage angle approximation in enhancing estimation accuracy.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo, desarrollar una propuesta prospectiva para el cambio de cobertura del suelo en la microcuenca La Rasta, ubicada en el municipio de Imués. Las propuestas se fundamentaron en un estudio multitemporal de la microcuenca, que genere el análisis prospectivo. Inicialmente, se crearon mapas de cobertura del suelo correspondientes a los años 1989 y 2023, permitiendo identificar la dinámica de cambios en este periodo, suscitando la base para construir un modelo prospectivo de coberturas para el año 2050. Este enfoque facilitó el análisis de variables críticas, que influyeron significativamente en los cambios y su impacto en la microcuenca. En colaboración con la comunidad local, se diseñaron alternativas de mejora para optimizar las coberturas y la calidad del suelo a lo largo del tiempo. La participación activa de la comunidad de Imués enriqueció el proceso, al aportar conocimientos territoriales. Tras obtener estas alternativas y variables, se propuso un modelo ajustado, que destacó los cambios direccionados hacia una menor degradación del suelo, promoviendo la conservación de las fuentes hídricas, flora y fauna silvestre, así como la preservación de la familia como componente fundamental de la agricultura. Este enfoque reveló la viabilidad de generar propuestas ambientales mediante modelos prospectivos para lograr una distribución y apropiación mejorada del territorio, contribuyendo a su conservación.

Agricultural landscapes significantly impact biodiversity, particularly within vineyard ecosystems where the configuration of native vegetation and vineyard edges plays a pivotal role. This study investigated the structure of bird communities across vineyards, their edges, and adjacent native vegetation, utilizing generalized linear mixed models to analyze the influence of surrounding land covers at varying scales of 100 m and 1000 m radii across these three landscape types on bird richness and abundance and functional groups. The results highlight that native vegetation is crucial for supporting endemic bird species, with 41% of all observed species found across all three habitat types and a significant 66.7% shared between native vegetation and edge habitats. In particular, insectivores and carnivores, key to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service provision, showed higher abundances in areas with extensive native vegetation, underscoring its vital role in maintaining ecological functions. Edges not only enhanced the general bird richness and abundance but also served as crucial habitats for granivores and omnivores, influencing ecosystem dynamics through changes in the trophic guild community structure. These findings underscore the importance of conserving native vegetation within vineyard landscapes to foster a diverse avian community that contributes to enhancing ecosystem services. These results provide an opportunity to intensify restoration initiatives on vineyard edges and enhance our understanding of how certain species adapt to agriculture. This can be considered a vital nature-based solution for sustainable agriculture, promoting biodiversity conservation alongside productive agroecological practices in vineyard ecosystems.

Agriculture is a leading cause of biodiversity loss, making the transition to sustainable agroecological practices crucial. Insectivorous bats play a crucial role as biological controllers in regard to agricultural crops, serving as important insect predators. The purpose of this study is to assess bat communities in three distinct habitats, namely the interior of a vineyard, native vegetation, and the transitional edge between them, by analyzing the echolocation patterns of different species. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the influence of landscape characteristics on bat communities and at the species level, allowing the incorporation of variables at different scales (at 10 m, 100 m, and 1000 m radius) from each sampling site. Our results show that edges enhance bat richness, their general activity, and feeding patterns, and are of particular benefit to certain species: Tadarida brasiliensis, Myotis chiloensis, and Lasiurus varius. Implementing agroecological practices, such as the maintenance of tree hedgerows at the landscape scale, along with native vegetation at the landscape scale, can amplify feeding activity in vineyards, thereby enhancing the provision of ecosystem services in agroecosystems. The edges of vineyards and natural vegetation are crucial for providing habitats for bats and increasing their foraging activity, as well as providing a way to enhance agroecological practices in vineyards to bolster ecosystem services.

Abstract Astronauts will encounter extended exposure to galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) during deep space exploration, which could impair brain function. Here, we report that in male mice, acute or chronic GCR exposure did not modify reward sensitivity but did adversely affect attentional processes and increased reaction times. Potassium (K+)-stimulation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) elevated dopamine (DA) but abolished temporal DA responsiveness after acute and chronic GCR exposure. Unlike acute GCR, chronic GCR increased levels of all other neurotransmitters, with differences evident between groups after higher K+-stimulation. Correlational and machine learning analysis showed that acute and chronic GCR exposure differentially reorganized the connection strength and causation of DA and other PFC neurotransmitter networks compared to controls which may explain space radiation-induced neurocognitive deficits.

This paper addresses the dearth of studies examining the status of Operational Excellence (OE) implementation and offers a roadmap for enhancing OE maturity levels. The study encompassed three phases: (1) face-to-face interviews with industry OE experts in 57 companies across seven sectors, (2), classification of companies based on their maturity levels, and (3) development of a roadmap for companies to enhance their OE maturity. Through face-to-face interviews with OE experts in fifty-seven companies across various sectors, the study classified organizations into five maturity levels, with only 7 % reaching the champion level. The proposed roadmap, comprising twenty-three variables across six hierarchical levels, outlines a path for companies to progress towards champion-level OE maturity, with an estimated timeframe of 4.5–5 years from a zero level. This research contributes valuable insights into the OE implementation status in emerging countries and provides practical guidance for organizations aiming to elevate their OE maturity, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning, economic sustainability, environmental sustainability, and social sustainability variables tailored to the specific challenges and opportunities faced by businesses in emerging nations.

Halting biodiversity loss and achieving food security are both aims of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, but there is complex interplay between them. Agriculture drives biodiversity loss, but biodiversity provides benefits to agriculture. There is substantial potential to develop ‘win-win’ solutions for biodiversity and people within productive farmland, by boosting wildlife that can be supported, whilst maintaining yield and other services. To achieve this, farmers need to be able to assess the impacts of their management on biodiversity at farm scale. While suitable tools exist to drive improvement in biodiversity management, none incorporates evidence on the effectiveness of specific management practices. In this study we present the Cool Farm Biodiversity metric, which generates a farm-scale action-based biodiversity management assessment, scored using expert judgements and expert assessment of experimental evidence. The metric is designed to be biome-specific, so it responds to conservation aims, ecosystem processes and farming systems in particular biomes. To demonstrate that the metric is responsive to changes in farm management, we present an example of use on a large arable farm from the temperate forest biome.

Antecedentes: Las variantes en genes del transporte de calcio intracelular han sido asociadas a inmunodeficiencias sindrómicas con un fenotipo IDCG. Reporte de caso: Niña de siete años, de padres no consanguíneos, en Cartagena-Colombia. A los dos meses de vida, presenta hematoquecia y se diagnostica con proctolitis alimentaria sin mejoría con restricción a leche, trigo y huevo, desarrollando desnutrición. A los ocho meses, una biopsia de colon muestra hiperplasia linfoide crónica, cursa con anemia, eosinofilia, pero IgE total y específica a alimentos normales. A los cuatro años, el Servicio de Inmunología la encuentra asintomática, recuperada nutricionalmente y sin sensibilización alérgica, pero persiste eosinofilia y calprotectina elevada, sugiriendo una enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal de inicio temprano. Las inmunoglobulinas fueron normales, poblaciones linfocitarias con linfopenia CD3, CD4 y CD8. A los seis años, presenta dermatitis atópica, sigue con calprotectina elevada y linfopénica. El inmunofenotipo por citometría espectral mediante Cytek®cFluor®Immunoprofiling-Kit14, mostró linfopenia e inversión CD4/CD8. Los linfocitos T-vírgenes CD4+ y CD8+ estaban disminuidos, en cambio las poblaciones de memoria efectora T-CD8+CD45RA-CCR7- y T-CD8+CD45RA+CCR7– estaban expandidas. Los linfocitos T-CD4+ de memoria efectora y central, también estaban aumentados1 (Imagen 1). El exoma reveló una variante heterocigótica en el gen ITPR3 (padre portador), c.7571G>A, p.(Arg2524His); los predictores la clasifican como de potencial efecto deletéreo. Conclusiones: La clínica y el inmunofenotipo de esta variante candidata difiere de otras relacionadas con el transporte del calcio intracelular. Son necesarios estudios funcionales para validar su causalidad. Una paciente con una variante potencialmente deletérea, presenta un inmunofenotipo con linfopenia CD3 y activación persistente de los linfocitos.

Lack of data regarding the agricultural activities in the area of Imués (Nariño, Colombia) has hindered understanding of current land uses and their impacts on natural resources, which causes this area to be considered one of the most arid in the region. To comprehend these processes, a description of the main land uses and agricultural and livestock production systems was made. This was carried out from a social, economic, and environmental dynamic through the characterization and typification of farms. Groups or clusters were constructed, which were previously subjected to qualitative statistical analysis, using the multiple correspondence factor analysis (MCAF) method. Subsequently, the hierarchical classification method was applied. The MCAF was able to establish four factors that were framed in the interaction of climate, altitude, and the productive component associated with it. Similarly, taking into account the social, economic, and environmental perspectives, it was determined that these groups, under their particularities and agricultural vocations, exert pressure on the territory's strategic ecosystems and diversity of flora and fauna. This makes their rural activities unsustainable. It was also found that there is a vocation for livestock exploitation and some minor species in the middle and high-altitude zones of the territory. However, it was established for other groupings that their major typologies were associated with conventional management without any planning. This generates negative impacts on soil resources, such as erosion and forest fragmentation, together with the expansion of the agricultural frontier.

Este trabajo detalla el diseño y la implementación de una arquitectura de Internet de las Cosas centrada en el monitoreo de temperatura y humedad. La selección estratégica de tecnologías, como Arduino, módulos LoRa, sensor DHT11 y el microcontrolador ESP32, constituye la base del sistema. Se destaca el empleo de Python Flask para desarrollar una interfaz de usuario en la aplicación web, asegurando así una experiencia de usuario fácil y accesible. Además, se enfatiza la implementación de algoritmos modulares y medidas de autenticación para mejorar la escalabilidad y seguridad del sistema. El artículo concluye resaltando los beneficios y la eficacia de la tecnología de código abierto en la adquisición, procesamiento y monitoreo de datos en diferentes escenarios de aplicación. Se proporcionan sugerencias para futuras mejoras, con especial atención a la expansión de la visualización de datos y la monitorización ambiental. Se abordan las limitaciones y ventajas del sistema, destacando su potencial aplicación en áreas remotas o con recursos limitados. Se espera que los resultados obtenidos en este trabajo puedan ser escalados a las diferentes etapas de un proyecto minero de pequeña y mediana escala en los que se requiere monitorear parámetros ambientales que oriente la toma de decisiones, como una metodología de trabajo que esté al alcance de pequeñas agremiaciones y explotación de recursos naturales de manera sostenible.
