This study aims to describe a report of experiences on the use of gamification as a tool of learning in biochemistry to motivate and develop new skills, creativity, and oral and written communication in the academics of pharmacy. The experience reported was given by the proposal of the current educators of the discipline of biochemistry, which was based on the use of the pedagogical practice of project-based learning. Thus, the proposed challenge was to create a game for high school students, to explain the development of the disease hypercholesterolemia. This study revealed that the use of games as a teaching-learning tool is effective, attractive, and dynamic, which can be used as a pedagogical resource to increase students' motivation and engagement and develop their cognitive skills.

Context The body condition score (BCS) is an easily measured, fast, inexpensive, and non-invasive tool to estimate the amount of body fat and to evaluate the nutritional status of dairy cows. Aims The aim of this study was to validate BCS in primiparous Gyr cows by using ultrasound measurements of subcutaneous fat (FT). Methods Body weight, BCS (score of 1–9) and FT measured at five body sites (FT1–FT5) were recorded during the prepartum and postpartum periods. Linear regression of FT on BCS and Pearson’s correlations were used. Key results The correlations between body weight and FT measures ranged from 0.49 to 0.63 and from 0.51 to 0.64 during the pre- and postpartum periods respectively, while the correlations between BCS and FT ranged from 0.69 to 0.82 and from 0.67 to 0.78 in the two periods. The BCS better reflected the variation in FT before and after calving than did body weight. Linear regression models were used to explore the relationship between BCS and FT measurements considering the former as the predictor variable. The coefficients of determination (R2) obtained for the prepartum variables ranged from 0.48 to 0.67. The highest R2 was obtained for the model that included FT measured in the lumbar region midway between the last rib and tuber coxae (hook; FT4) as the response variable. The R2 of the models whose response variables were obtained during the postpartum period ranged from 0.45 to 0.60. The highest R2 was observed when the pelvic region midway between the tuber coxae (hook) and tuber ischii (pin; FT2) was used as a response variable. Conclusions The correlations between BCS and FT validate the use of BCS obtained by visual assessment as a tool for evaluating fat reserves in Gyr dams before calving and during first lactation. Among the FT measurements, FT2 and FT4 are interesting because both are easy to measure and showed higher correlations and coefficients of determination with BCS before calving and lactation. Implications The BCS is an accessible tool for producers that requires only training of the evaluator and that is economically viable since no special equipment is needed.

Wind Energy, Convergent omnidirectional nozzle guide, Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Energy Efficiency Wind energy, considered a stable alternative, can be implemented in cities by means of vertical axis wind turbines, which have better performance against turbulent flow compared to horizontal axis turbines. However, this type of turbine has not evolved technologically significantly in the last few centuries, being the horizontal axis turbines more studied and developed, due to the theoretical better efficiency of these turbines, which creates room for improvement. Therefore, vertical axis wind turbine will be studied and the performance of some enhancements will be analyzed aiming a more efficient harvesting of wind energy. In this regard, a flow augmentation system is proposed to be integrated with the wind turbine. In addition, the Lenz 2, S815 and JShaped airfoil shapes will be analyzed by Computational Fluid Dynamics – CFD technique on the ANSYS software for comparison of static torque generated by the wind turbine against wind flow for different angular positions of the turbine. Analyzing the gains obtained with the integration of the flow augmentation system proposed, achieving, this way, results regarding to cut in speed and overall efficiency of the shapes. Results show that the use of the convergent omnidirectional nozzle guide increased the overall static torque of all turbines, which would decrease the cut in speed, as well as its increased effectiveness on drag driven airfoils. The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates. People tend to evaluate information from reliable sources more favourably, but it is unclear exactly how perceivers' worldviews interact with this source credibility effect. In a large and diverse cross-cultural sample (N = 10,195 from 24 countries), we presented participants with obscure, meaningless statements attributed to either a spiritual guru or a scientist. We found a robust global source credibility effect for scientific authorities, which we dub 'the Einstein effect': across all 24 countries and all levels of religiosity, scientists held greater authority than spiritual gurus. In addition, individual religiosity predicted a weaker relative preference for the statement from the scientist compared with the spiritual guru, and was more strongly associated with credibility judgements for the guru than the scientist. Independent data on explicit trust ratings across 143 countries mirrored our experimental findings. These findings suggest that irrespective of one's religious worldview, across cultures science is a powerful and universal heuristic that signals the reliability of information. People differ in their general tendency to endorse conspiracy theories (that is, conspiracy mentality). Previous research yielded inconsistent findings on the relationship between conspiracy mentality and political orientation, showing a greater conspiracy mentality either among the political right (a linear relation) or amongst both the left and right extremes (a curvilinear relation). We revisited this relationship across two studies spanning 26 countries (combined N = 104,253) and found overall evidence for both linear and quadratic relations, albeit small and heterogeneous across countries. We also observed stronger support for conspiracy mentality among voters of opposition parties (that is, those deprived of political control). Nonetheless, the quadratic effect of political orientation remained significant when adjusting for political control deprivation. We conclude that conspiracy mentality is associated with extreme left- and especially extreme right-wing beliefs, and that this non-linear relation may be strengthened by, but is not reducible to, deprivation of political control.

Para o cogumelo basidiomiceto Macrocybe titans existem poucos registros na literatura sobre o seu potencial antimicrobiano. Biofilmes são importantes fatores de virulência e resistência de micro-organismos, e a busca por novos agentes terapêuticos eficazes tem se tornado uma alternativa favorável ao combate às doenças infecciosas. As leveduras do gênero Candida são as principais causadoras de infecções oportunistas e nosocomiais, dentre suas espécies as mais incidentes são C. albicans e C. tropicalis. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho teve como objetivos elucidar o efeito do extrato aquoso de M. titans sobre a formação de biofilmes produzido por essas leveduras. O extrato aquoso foi preparado através da maceração do pó de basidiomas de M. titans em água purificada (1 g.mL-1). A atividade antibiofilme foi avaliada pelo método do cristal violeta, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e a microscopia de fluorescência (coloração por Calcofluor White), para biofilmes em formação e biofilmes pré-formados. A expressão de genes de virulência das leveduras nos biofilmes foi avaliada por qRT-PCR. Os primers utilizados foram, para C. albicans: UME6, CHT2 e ACT1b; e para C. tropicalis foram utilizados ALS1 e ACT1. Observouse que foi necessária a concentração de 32 mg.mL-1 para a inibição da formação de biofilmes em C. albicans, e de 16 mg.mL-1 para inibição de C. tropicalis. Os biofilmes formados de C. albicans e C. tropicalis foram desestruturados a partir das concentrações de 63 mg.mL-1 e 8 mg.mL-1, respectivamente. A análise das imagens corroborou os resultados do ensaio de cristal violeta, com a escassez de células nos biofilmes tratados em formação, e o aparecimento de espaços vazios entre os biofilmes pré-formados tratados, além de demonstrar a desconfiguração da parede celular das leveduras, com a formação de cicatrizes e rugosidades não características. Pôde-se observar a inibição da expressão dos genes UME6 e CHT2 nas células planctônicas tratadas tanto em formação, quanto pré-incubadas, bem como nas células sésseis de biofilme pré-formado, contudo, observou-se um pequeno aumento (~20%) na expressão gênica em biofilme em formação tratadas. Os resultados para o gene ALS1 se mostraram diminuídos para células planctônicas (~4 vezes menos expresso) e aumentados para células sésseis (de 1,5 a 2,5 vezes mais expresso). Os resultados foram analisados por análise de variância (ANOVA) e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste t de Student utilizando-se a média e desvio padrão. Abstract: Macrofungi extract has been studied because of its great bioproducts variability. There are few studies about the antimicrobial potential of the mushroom Macrocybe titans. Microbial biofilm is the main virulence and resistance factor, and the research for new efficient therapeutic agents is an alternative against infectious disease. Candida species are the major causes of opportunistic and hospital infections, the most incident species are C. albicans and C. tropicalis. Thus, this work aims to elucidate the M. titans aqueous extract inhibition capacity over the yeast's biofilm formation. The aqueous extract was prepared through the powder maceration of basidiomes in purified water (1 g.mL-1). The antibiofilm activity through the violet crystal method, microscopic electronic array and the fluorescence microscopy (calcofluor white dye) were analyzed to investigate the cells and biofilm structural modifications after treatment, for biofilm formation and preformed biofilms. The virulence gene expression was evaluated through qRT-PCR. The primers used were C. albicans: UME6, CHT2 and ACT-1b; and C. tropicalis ALS1 and ACT1. The C. albicans and C. tropicalis biofilm formation was inhibited at 32 mg.mL-1 and 16 mg.mL-1, respectively, and preformed biofilms were inhibited at 63 mg.mL-1 and 8 mg.mL-1. The images showed scarcity of biofilm cells in the biofilm formation treatment, and voids appearance in the pre-formed biofilms. The yeast's cell walls showed uncharacteristic scars and deformation. The planktonic cells showed UME6 and CHT2 expressions inhibited in biofilm formation and preformed biofilms, as well as the sessile preformed biofilm cells. Although sessile biofilms formation cells showed increased expression (~20%). The ALS1 gene was less expressed in planktonic cells (~4 times) and more expressed in sessile cells (~1,5 to 2,5 times). The data was evaluated with ANOVA and Student T Tests.

Background: Recently, a new HF entity, with LVEF between 40-49%, was presented to comprehend and seek better therapy for HF with preserved LVEF (HFpEF) and borderline, in the means that HF with reduced LVEF (HFrEF) already has well-defined therapy in the literature. Objective: To compare the clinical-therapeutic profile of patients with HF with mid-range LVEF (HFmrEF) with HFpEF and HFrEF and to verify predictors of hospital mortality. Method: Historical cohort of patients admitted with decompensated HF at a supplementary hospital in Recife/PE between April/2007 - August/2017, stratified by LVEF (< 40%/40 - 49/≥ 50%), based on the guideline of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2016. The groups were compared and Logistic Regression was used to identify predictors of independent risk for in-hospital death. Results: A sample of 493 patients, most with HFrEF (43%), HFpEF (30%) and HFmrEF (26%). Average age of 73 (± 14) years, 59% men. Hospital mortality 14%, readmission within 30 days 19%. In therapeutics, it presented statistical significance among the 3 groups, spironolactone, in HFrEF patients. Hospital death and readmission within 30 days did not make difference. In the HFmrEF group, factors independently associated with death were: valve disease (OR: 4.17, CI: 1.01-9.13), altered urea at admission (OR: 6.18, CI: 1.78-11.45) and beta-blocker hospitalization (OR: 0.29, CI: 0.08-0.97). In HFrEF, predictors were: prior renal disease (OR: 2.84, CI: 1.19-6.79), beta-blocker at admission (OR: 0.29, CI: 0.12-0.72) and ACEI/ ARB (OR: 0.21, CI: 0.09-0.49). In HFpEF, only valve disease (OR: 4.61, CI: 1.33-15.96) and kidney disease (OR: 5.18, CI: 1.68-11.98) were relevant. Conclusion: In general, HFmrEF presented intermediate characteristics between HFrEF and HFpEF. Independent predictors of mortality may support risk stratification and management of this group.

The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic evolution of milk production, udder morphology, and animal behavior of Gir dairy cattle. Data were obtained on the predicted breeding values for milk yield of 60,226 cows born from 1968 to 2015 and standardized predicted breeding values for udder conformation and milking behavior of 7,635 cows born from 1987 to 2015. The influence of tested bulls on genetic trends was discussed, with special focus on the period after 1993, the year when the predicted breeding values of the first group of tested bulls were released. The traits of interest were 305-d milk yield, fore udder attachment, rear udder height, rear udder width, teat length, teat thickness, ease of milking, and reactivity. Significant genetic evolution was observed for 305-d milk yield, with increasing annual growth observed from 1993, as the number of cows sired by the best proven bulls increased. Before 1993, no genetic evolution was observed for any of the studied traits. From 1993 onward, all traits showed genetic gains, except fore udder attachment. The use of genetically-tested bulls since 1993 has led to important genetic gains in the Brazilian Dairy Gir population. Before the identification of genetically superior bulls began, many traits showed no improvement. Selection for milk yield has modified the conformation traits of the Gir mammary system. The longevity of the mammary glands of high-yield cows may be impaired due to poor fore udder attachment. Regarding behavioral traits, this population has evolved to less-reactive animals that are easier to milk.

The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for stayability at 60 months of age (STAY60) and its association with first lactation cumulative milk yield (P305), age at first calving (AFC), and first calving interval (FCI), in order to adopt these traits as selection criteria for longevity in Gir dairy cattle. Records for 2770 cows born between 1982 and 2008 from six herds in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, and Paraiba were analyzed. The (co)variance components were estimated by a Bayesian approach using bivariate animal models. The heritability estimates were 0.37 ± 0.09, 0.23 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.06, and 0.07 ± 0.03 for STAY60, P305, AFC, and FCI, respectively. The genetic correlations of STAY60 with P305, AFC, and FCI were moderate to high, with values of 0.61 (0.17), -0.44 (0.23), and 0.88 (0.13), respectively. STAY60, P305, and AFC exhibited additive genetic variability, and these traits should be considered in selection indices. The indirect selection for longevity through the correlated responses of early-expression traits, such as milk production at first lactation, could be used to improve the ability of animals to remain in the herd.

RESUMO Jovem com 17 anos de idade atendido com dispneia progressiva há 15 dias e piora nas últimas 24 horas. Foi admitido em estado de insuficiência respiratória e choque cardiogênico com disfunção de múltiplos órgãos. O ecocardiograma mostrou fração de ejeção ventricular esquerda de 11%, grave hipocinesia difusa e pressão sistólica da artéria pulmonar de 50mmHg. Houve necessidade de suporte hemodinâmico com uso de dobutamina (20mcg/kg/minuto) e noradrenalina (1,7mcg/kg/minuto). Após 48 horas, o paciente não apresentou melhora hemodinâmica nem clínica, optando-se, então, pela implantação de membrana de oxigenação extracorpórea. Ocorreu melhora do ponto de vista hemodinâmico, da perfusão sistêmica, da função renal e hepática, porém, após 72 horas, não houve recuperação da função cardíaca. Optou-se, assim, pela transferência para outro hospital. O paciente foi transferido por transporte aéreo de Salvador (BA) para Recife (PE). Foi realizado transplante cardíaco com rápida recuperação da função hepática e renal, e boa função do enxerto. A histopatologia do coração explantado demonstrou miocardite crônica ativa e amastigotas de Trypanosoma cruzi. A prevalência global estimada de infecção por T. cruzi caiu de 18 milhões em 1991, quando a primeira iniciativa regional de controle teve início, para 5,7 milhões em 2010. A miocardite é uma doença inflamatória causada por condições infecciosas ou não infecciosas. As manifestações clínicas variam desde um quadro subclínico até insuficiência cardíaca e choque cardiogênico. Diversos relatos sugerem que o uso de membrana de oxigenação extracorpórea em pacientes com quadro grave e refratário de miocardite é uma opção como terapia ponte até transplante cardíaco, nos casos sem recuperação espontânea da função ventricular. Em uma consulta ambulatorial de acompanhamento realizada 6 meses após o transplante, o paciente encontrava-se bem e assintomático.

ABSTRACT A 17-year-old Brazilian male presented with progressive dyspnea for 15 days, worsening in the last 24 hours, and was admitted in respiratory failure and cardiogenic shock, with multiple organ dysfunctions. Echocardiography showed a left ventricle ejection fraction of 11%, severe diffuse hypokinesia, and a systolic pulmonary artery pressure of 50mmHg, resulting in the need for hemodynamic support with dobutamine (20mcg/kg/min) and noradrenaline (1.7mcg/kg/min). After 48 hours with no clinical or hemodynamic improvement, an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation was implanted. The patient presented with hemodynamic, systemic perfusion and renal and liver function improvements; however, his cardiac function did not recover after 72 hours, and he was transfer to another hospital. Air transport was conducted from Salvador to Recife in Brazil. A heart transplant was performed with rapid recovery of both liver and kidney functions, as well as good graft function. Histopathology of the explanted heart showed chronic active myocarditis and amastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi. The estimated global prevalence of T. cruzi infections declined from 18 million in 1991, when the first regional control initiative began, to 5.7 million in 2010. Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease due to infectious or non-infectious conditions. Clinical manifestation is variable, ranging from subclinical presentation to refractory heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Several reports suggest that the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients presenting with severe refractory myocarditis is a potential bridging therapy to heart transplant when there is no spontaneous recovery of ventricular function. In a 6-month follow-up outpatient consult, the patient presented well and was asymptomatic.

Atualmente, em meio à grande variedade de processos e sistemas construtivos disponíveis no mercado, o profissional da construção civil freqüentemente se depara com várias questões do tipo: Qual sistema estrutural é o mais eficiente para o meu empreendimento? Deve ser em aço ou em concreto? Deve ser industrializado ou artesanal, ou deve ser ainda uma combinação de mais de um sistema? Essas escolhas são de fundamental importância para a eficiência da obra e para o sucesso do empreendimento. É importante salientar que tais definições devem ser feitas antes mesmo do projeto arquitetônico, visto que um bom projeto de arquitetura deve ter sua concepção baseada nos princípios e peculiaridades de cada sistema. Porém normalmente as respostas para estas perguntas estão apoiadas apenas na própria experiência do profissional ou em simples listas comparativas com vantagens de cada sistema estrutural, que não fornecem informações suficientes para uma avaliação correta de cada uma delas. Neste trabalho se desenvolveu um modelo de tomada de decisão quanto à definição de sistemas estruturais de edifícios. Este modelo pode orientar o profissional da construção civil na avaliação dos diversos parâmetros que influem na concepção e projeto de edifícios e é capaz de eleger a alternativa de sistema estrutural mais eficiente para um determinado empreendimento com características específicas. O modelo foi desenvolvido de acordo com os princípios da Lógica Difusa (Fuzzy Logic). Esta lógica é aplicada quando não se tem uma base de dados consistente e precisa. Como vários dos fatores que influem na determinação do melhor sistema estrutural para uma determinada edificação (fatores técnicos, econômicos, construtivos, ambientais e estéticos) estão sujeitos a um alto grau de incertezas e de subjetividade, a análise destes fatores pelos meios tradicionais se torna muito difícil, mas com a aplicação dos métodos da Lógica Difusa, consegue-se obter resultados bastante satisfatórios. In those day’s there is many different types of civil construction systems to place trade business. Requests for guidance from several construction workers often came out on questions as: Which structural system is more efficient to my business? It should be made steel or concrete? Which one should one choose: craftsman or manufacturer? May be both systems? The choice that we make is the most important thing to get successful by the end of the business. The definitions how to establish the project must be taken before the architectural project that is because a good one must is based in concepts and peculiarities in each structural systems. However, the answers to those questions are based only in the personal experience to the professional or on comparative lists which describe advantages of each structural system. In spite of these lists do not given enough informations to professionals make decisions the way there it should. As we confront problems (without solutions) there is no viable alternative but to face and solve history’s accumulated problems. Solutions must come from research for this reason in this job was developed a ideal of making decisions when we talk about structural building systems.
