A incidência dos desastres naturais no Brasil, sobretudo nas áreas urbanas, intensificado pelo processo de urbanização e industrialização, tem deixado em alerta toda a população devido aos riscos ambientais. Nos últimos dez anos, a população brasileira, em especial do estado de Minas Gerais, vem se destacando como um dos mais atingidos pelos desastres naturais associados a chuva. Compreendendo a escola como espaço de discussão e disseminação de conhecimentos, a Geografia é capaz de trazer a compreensão e respostas para os riscos ambientais enfrentados no lugar. Desse modo, com o intuito de promover discussões e reflexões na interface de três campos - Geografia, Riscos e Educação – o objetivo da pesquisa foi apontar caminhos para trabalhar o enfrentamento dos riscos ambientais em Cajuri/Minas Gerais/Brasil por meio do ensino de Geografia nas escolas locais e percepção dos riscos, a partir da perspectiva construcionista e pesquisa participante-colaborativa. A intervenção da educação geográfica nos processos do ensino e aprendizagem foi essencial para apontar caminhos estratégicos de mitigação do risco através da sistematização coletiva de um Atlas Municipal Escolar de Cajuri/MG, cujas informações sobre a geograficidade, a historicidade e os diferentes ambientes da paisagem urbana e rural, possibilitarão novos conhecimentos e percepção sobre o lugar, entendendo suas dinâmicas, interações e conflitos que potencializam os riscos ambientais.

ABSTRACT The temporal distribution of design rainfall hyetographs can be obtained through various procedures. One such method involves using temporal distribution curves to disaggregate a rainfall value of longer duration into chronological values within shorter time intervals. This is demonstrated by SCS distribution curves for durations of 6 and 24 hours and the well-known Huff curves. Another approach involves deriving temporal distribution using design hyetograph calculation methods, such as the Chicago and alternating block methods, based on Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) equations. This paper aims to combine these approaches and develop universal equations capable of accurately fitting smooth rainfall time distribution curves. The advantage is the replacement of tables, like SCS and Huff, with analytical equations, enhancing usability in spreadsheets. Furthermore, these universal equations can determine the temporal rainfall distribution using an IDF equation or fitting a specified design hyetograph like Euler type II. Four numerical examples are provided.

This article aims to configure a matrix to determine the selection of Low Impact Development (LID) techniques that enable the analysis of sustainable LID measures for sustainable urban drainage and environmental quality in cities. Aiming to achieve the objective, this article involved three steps: (1) the method of systematic literature review was used to identify the key attributes according to the sustainability measures found in the conceptual framework; (2) analysis of key attributes and performance of LID techniques, with a view to identifying possible techniques that present aspects that promote them to the category of sustainable applications to mitigate the impacts of impervious surfaces and urban flooding. And, finally, in the third stage (3) the research sought to evaluate the qualitative characteristics of LID techniques through their use in urbanized and consolidated areas in cities. Therefore, this research aims to support sustainable city applications by evaluating LIDs techniques effectiveness in urban planning, offering insights on its role in managing urban drainage.

Objective: To review key evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral facial palsy in children and adults. Methods: Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on peripheral facial palsy were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results: The topics were divided into 2 main parts: (1) Evaluation and diagnosis of facial palsy: electrophysiologic tests, idiopathic facial palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, traumatic peripheral facial palsy, recurrent peripheral facial palsy, facial nerve tumors, and peripheral facial palsy in children; and (2) Rehabilitation procedures: surgical decompression of the facial nerve, facial nerve grafting, surgical treatment of long-term peripheral facial palsy, and non-surgical rehabilitation of the facial nerve. Conclusions: Peripheral facial palsy is a condition of diverse etiology. Treatment should be individualized according to the cause of facial nerve dysfunction, but the literature presents better evidence-based recommendations for systemic corticosteroid therapy.

Manguezais são ecossistemas tropicais localizados no encontro de águas continentais e oceânicas. Fornecedores de diversos serviços ecossistêmicos, esses ecossistemas são frágeis e sensíveis a perturbações. Diante disso, o objetivo geral dessa pesquisa foi avaliar, utilizando o índice CO2 flux, alterações das atividades fotossintéticas dos mangues frente ao impacto da tempestade de granizo ocorrida no dia 1 de junho de 2016, em Aracruz (ES). Para isso, foi utilizado imagens entre 2016 e 2020 do sensor MSI acoplado ao satélite Sentnel-2. Os mapas temáticos e gráficos estatísticos, gerados a partir de pontos amostrais, possibilitaram tanto a categorização das áreas de acordo com a intensidade do impacto quanto a identificação das áreas que se regeneraram naturalmente e quais precisarão de intervenção para se recuperarem. A validação de campo confirmou a eficiência do índice em registrar as consequências da tempestade nas atividades fotossintéticas dos mangues.

Methods: Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on childhood hearing loss were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results: The topics were divided into 2 parts: (1) treatment of sensorineural hearing loss: individual hearing aids, bilateral cochlear implants, cochlear implants in young children, unilateral hearing loss, and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder; and (2) treatment of conductive/mixed hearing loss: external/middle ear malformations, ventilation tube insertion, and tympanoplasty in children. Conclusions: In children with hearing loss, in addition to speech therapy, Hearing AIDS (HAs) or implantable systems may be indicated. Even in children with profound hearing loss, both the use of HAs and behavioral assessments while using the device are important.

Conclusions: Every child with suspected hearing loss has the right to diagnosis and appropriate treatment if necessary. This task force considers 5 essential rights: (1) Otolaryngologist consultation; (2) Speech assessment and therapy; (3) Diagnostic tests; (4) Treatment; (5) Ophthalmologist consultation.

Objective: To review the literature on the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular schwannoma. Methods: Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on vestibular schwannoma were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results: The topics were divided into 2 parts: (1) Diagnosis — audiologic, electrophysiologic tests, and imaging; (2) Treatment — wait and scan protocols, surgery, radiosurgery/radiotherapy, and systemic therapy. Conclusions: Decision making in VS treatment has become more challenging. MRI can diagnose increasingly smaller tumors, which has disastrous consequences for the patients and their families. It is important to develop an individualized approach for each case, which highly depends on the experience of each surgical team.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the hearing habits of a group of students between public and private schools and compare the degree of exposure to sound stimuli via earphones. Methods: 1,085 public and private school students received a questionnaire on hearing habits and exposure to amplified music. Their answers to these questions were analyzed and compared between the groups of students. The chi-square test compared hearing habits between public and private schools, with the statistical significance level set at 5% (p < 0.05). Result: in general, most students (92%) reported hearing habits of exposure to amplified music. Questionnaire answers indicated a high prevalence of both earphone use (92%) and attendance at places with loud music (63.6%). Conclusion: private school students use earphones more often than those from public schools.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the effect of communication training developed for adolescents on the youth’s communication skills. Methods Forty-one young people participated in the study and were divided into two groups. Group I received intervention - communication training for five weeks; Group II - were guided on the importance of voice for communication. Participants had their communication skills assessed before/after interventions through a self-administered questionnaire, answered by the participant and parents. Both groups had oral presentations recorded on video, which were analyzed by speech therapists through the evaluation of the communication profile, listing the aspects that should be observed as a point of strength/opportunity for improvement. Association between qualitative variables was assessed using Fischer’s exact test, Pearson’s chi-square test, McNemar’s test, and McNemar-Bowker’s test. Objectives: To review and provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of otosclerosis. Methods: Task force members were educated on knowledge synthesis methods, including electronic database search, review and selection of relevant citations, and critical appraisal of selected studies. Articles written in English or Portuguese on otosclerosis were eligible for inclusion. The American College of Physicians’ guideline grading system and the American Thyroid Association’s guideline criteria were used for critical appraisal of evidence and recommendations for therapeutic interventions. Results: The topics were divided into 2 parts: 1) Diagnosis – audiologic and radiologic; 2) Treatment – hearing AIDS, pharmacological therapy, stapes surgery, and implantable devices – bone-anchored devices, active middle ear implants, and Cochlear Implants (CI). Conclusions: The pathophysiology of otosclerosis has not yet been fully elucidated, but environmental factors and unidentified genes are likely to play a significant role in it. Women with otosclerosis are not at increased risk of worsening clinical condition due to the use of contraceptives or during pregnancy. Drug treatment has shown little benefit. If the patient does not want to undergo stapedotomy, the use of hearing aids is well indicated. Implantable systems should be indicated only in rare cases, and the CI should be indicated in cases of profound deafness.

Objectives: To determinate the otoprotective efficacy of melatonin.in experimental models of rodents through a systematic review of the literature. Methods: Altogether, 154 articles were found in four databases. The PICOS strategy (Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome) was used to define the eligibility criteria. Studies that met the inclusion criteria for the second step were included in a qualitative synthesis. Each study type was analyzed with the CAMARADES quality of assessment’s checklist and the SYRCLE RoBS risk of bias. Results: Seven articles were selected, and four were included in the meta-analysis. It was possible to obtain seven outcomes according to the standard auditory frequencies presented among the studies, considering a minimum of three standard frequencies. The outcomes analyzed were for the frequencies of 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, and 8000 Hz. Conclusion: Melatonin can provide protection against the ototoxic effects of cisplatin and aminoglycosides at 5000 Hz, 6000 Hz, and 8000 Hz, thereby minimizing the reduction in Otoacustic Emissions (OAE) amplitude. The same effect was not observed in the lower frequencies. Despite the limited number of studies that were evaluated, the results appeared consistent in higher frequencies. However, the methodology of the available studies did not meet the necessary methodological rigor that promotes the safe replicability of these studies.

Abstract There is a consensus that arterial hypertension (AH) is associated with stroke. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the histology of the microvasculature associated with the mucosa of the posterior nasal cavity to identify possible factors related to vascular weakening and rupture. Histological sections were obtained from hypertensive and normotensive individuals, regardless of epistaxis. Our results showed that the group with AH had: (a) smaller median diameter of the lumen of arteries and arterioles; (b) increased thickness of the intimal arteries and arterioles, slight inflammatory infiltrate, and rupture of internal elastic lamina; (c) greater thickness of the middle tunica in arterioles; (d) lower percentage of histological sections with non-injured intimal layers in capillaries, arterioles, and small arteries; (e) lower percentage of histological sections with intact media tunic and/or myocytes juxtaposed in arteries and arterioles; (f) no difference between the diameters of small arteries or arterioles. The intima was thicker in individuals with severe epistaxis than in the normotensive group, but it did not differ from the AH group. Thus, hypertension may cause structural lesions in the vascular layers, and in the absence of tissue repair and the persistence of AH, these lesions may favour vascular rupture, especially during hypertensive peaks.

Objective: The present study aimed to perform a morphological and morphometric analysis of cochlear structures of C57BL/6J mice receiving oral melatonin for a 12-month period. Methods: 32 male C57BL/6J were divided into control and melatonin groups. Control received saline and ethanol solution and melatonin group, 50 μL of 10 mg of melatonin/kg/day orally for a 12-month period. After de experiment the animals were sacrificed into a 40% concentration of CO2 chamber, and the blades were morphological and morphometrically analyzed. Results: The melatonin group revealed a higher median density of viable cells (45 ± 10.28 cells/100 μm2, 31–73, vs. 32 ± 7.47 cells/100 μm2, 25–48). The median area of stria vascularis was 55.0 ± 12.27 cells/100 μm2 (38–80) in the control, and 59.0 ± 16.13 cells/100 μm2 (40–134) in the melatonin group. The morphometric analysis of the spiral ligament reveals a higher median of total viable neurons in the melatonin (41 ± 7.47 cells/100 μm2, 27–60) than in the control group (31 ± 5.68 cells/100 μm2, 21–44). Conclusion: Although melatonin is a potent antioxidant, it does not completely neutralize the occurrence of presbycusis; however, it may delay the onset of this condition. Level of evidence: 3.

This article presents reflections on certain public education policy guidelines, oriented to the labor market and exemplified by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recommendations, concerning their influence on artistic education and, more precisely, theater education. It addresses existing problems in the field of education in Brazil and France, with emphasis on conceptual causes. In a possible contribution to debates on utilitarianism in theater education, the concept of resistance, present in Michel Foucault’s works, is used as mediator in the utilization of cognition studies to analyze the planning, practice and evaluation of theater classes in primary schools.

Introduction: Studies have demonstrated the ototoxic effects of antimalarial drugs in individuals who receive these drugs, but little is known regarding the toxicity of these drugs in the newborn auditory system when administered to the mother receive the drug during pregnancy. Objective: To verify the incidence of hearing loss in neonates who have no other associated risk indicators, born to mothers treated for malaria during pregnancy. Methods: A retrospective, quantitative cohort study was developed at Hospital de Base Dr. Ary Pinheiro and Clínica Limiar, both located in the municipality of Porto Velho (Rondônia). The sample consisted of 527 newborns divided into two groups: exposed to antimalarials drugs during pregnancy group (n = 32) and non-exposed group (n = 495). Data collection took place from September 2014 to December 2015, through an interview with the mothers and/or guardians of the newborn, through the newborns’ and the mothers’ records, and the neonatal hearing screening database of the above-mentioned institutions. Results: All the neonates in the exposed group, assessed through the recording of transient otoacoustic emissions associated with the automated brainstem auditory evoked potential test, underwent neonatal hearing screening in the first examination. Among the newborns in the non-exposed group, 30 showed failure and were retested. Of these, one continued to fail and was referred for diagnosis, in whom the results showed to be within the normal range. Among the neonates of the exposed group, infection with Plasmodium vivax was the most frequent, and was similarly distributed among the gestational trimesters, and chloroquine was the most commonly used antimalarial drug treatment more often given during the third trimester; these findings did not show any influence on the audiological findings of the studied neonates. Conclusion: The present study did not identify any cases of hearing loss in neonates born to mothers who used antimalarial drugs during gestation.

Este artigo tece reflexões sobre algumas orientações de políticas públicas de educação, direcionadas para o mercado de trabalho e exemplificadas por recomendações da Organização para a Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Econômico (OCDE), em sua influência sobre a educação artística e, mais precisamente, teatral. Aborda problemas existentes nesse campo de atividade no Brasil e na França, com destaque para causas conceituais. Em uma possível contribuição para os debates sobre o utilitarismo na educação teatral, vale-se do conceito de resistência, presente nas obras de Michel Foucault, como mediador na utilização de estudos da cognição na análise do planejamento, condução e avaliação de aulas de teatro em escolas do ensino básico.

Sambaquis são sítios arqueológicos presentes principalmente próximos a costa e a sistemas flúvio-lacustres. São encontrados na maior parte do litoral brasileiro. Coletas e análises de amostras de solos e de espécies de malacofauna fornecem informações importantes sobre a ocupação humana em determinado local. Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar, através da análise de elementos químicos presentes em amostras de solos, a ocorrência de ocupação humana em três sambaquis localizados no município de Guarapari, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Foram delimitados três perfis, um para cada sambaqui, denominados Una I, Una II e Concha D’Ostra. As amostras de solos foram secas, destorroadas e peneiradas. A seguir foram enviadas para análises em laboratório. Foram encontradas quantidades significativas de elementos químicos tais como fósforo, potássio, sódio, cálcio, magnésio, manganês, zinco, cobre e também de matéria orgânica. Foi verificada ainda significativa variação nos níveis de pH, na capacidade de troca de cátions, na soma de bases e saturação de bases. Os restos de espécies de malacofauna, utilizadas como fonte de alimentação pelos sambaquieiros, bem como as análises químicas das amostras de solos realizadas permitem concluir que houve ocupação humana nos três sambaquis. Altos teores de fósforo e potássio encontrados bem como o porte do sambaqui Concha D’Ostra sugerem que ali houve ocupação humana por período de tempo maior quando comparado com os sambaquis Una I e Una II.

A cheia de 1941 em Porto Alegre, capital do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), situado no extremo sul do Brasil, que inundou uma área extensa da cidade, incluindo o centro e alguns bairros, foi de uma magnitude sem precedentes e nenhum evento posterior chegou perto em termos quantitativos. Apesar de fartamente documentada, esta grande cheia gerada na bacia do Jacuí e em outros contribuintes menores, desaguando no lago Guaíba, nunca foi objeto de estimativa consistente das suas vazões em que pese se ter os registros de cotas de nível d’água no cais do porto, localizado no centro da cidade. As chuvas causadoras também nunca foram mapeadas em termos espaciais nem explicitada sua característica temporal. O presente estudo produz resultados neste sentido. O mapeamento da chuva no evento de 1941 mostra aspecto compatível com um CCM (Complexo Convectivo de Mesoescala) assim como os quatro bursts de precipitações intensas identificados. A raridade da cheia de 1941 tem sido aferida pela aplicação da distribuição de Gumbel aos níveis máximos anuais, mas ela desponta como outlier, colocando dúvidas numa estimativa de período de retorno. Fazendo-se o mesmo ajuste com as vazões máximas anuais, este efeito de outlier permanece. Assim o presente estudo optou por contextualizar a raridade da cheia de 1941 em Porto Alegre com base em relações de envoltórias de vazões extremas mundiais. A conclusão é que a cheia de 1941 foi extrema e rara, mas a curva envelope de Creager dá espaço para consideração de uma cheia ainda mais extrema para Porto Alegre.

Futebol é um esporte intermitente caracterizado por ações de alta intensidade. Um método comumente usado para predizer a potência muscular é a aferição da massa muscular. O presente estudo visa analisar a relação entre a área muscular da coxa (AMC) e a altura do teste de salto vertical contra movimento (CMJ) em um grupo de jogadores profissionais de futebol. Foram avaliados 29 atletas. A AMC foi predita usando o protocolo de Frisancho e o CMJ foi feito em plataforma de força portátil. INTRODUCTION:Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a consequence of aging of the auditory system. The best known mechanism of cell death in ARHL is apoptosis due to increased production of reactive oxygen species. In this context, it is hypothesized that melatonin, owing to its high antioxidant potential and its action in the mitochondria, helps prevent or delay outer hair cell dysfunction (HCD). AIMS:To evaluate the effect of melatonin on the prevention of HCD dysfunction in the ARHL process in a susceptible murine C57BL/6J model. METHOD:C57BL/6J animals were divided into two groups: control (CG) and melatonin (MG). The CG received a saline and ethanol solution and the MG, melatonin (10 mg/kg/day). The solutions were offered daily (50 μl) orally over a 10-month period. Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) measurements were conducted once a month. RESULTS:There was a decrease in DPOAE values in both groups over time and a differentiation between them from the 10th month of life onwards. At 10 months, the MG maintained higher DPOAE values than the CG at all frequencies tested. CONCLUSION:The use of melatonin has otoprotective effects on HCD in the ARHL process in the C57BL/6J model.

Artigo que visa caracterizar situações em que aulas de teatro possam fomentar uma produção de subjetividade potente, singular, junto a seus alunos. Como exemplo, será analisado um exercício realizado em uma aula de teatro dentro de um processo de pesquisa, propondo que elementos ali ocorridos se deram de modo análogo (homônomo) aos de processos de subjetivação. As referências são conceitos de Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari e Michel Foucault.

ABSTRACT To make water quality series more representative, real-time monitoring techniques are developed. However, these techniques have obstacles in their use, such as high costs and difficulties in equipment installation, maintenance, and calibration. One alternative is near-real time water quality monitoring (NRTWQM), with sampling done less frequently than daily. The study objective was to evaluate, through spectral analysis, the water quality sampling frequency representativity for different catchments. For this purpose, a historical series of real time water quality monitoring stations were used in Brazil, Canada, and the USA. These series were submitted to spectral analysis to identify the denser frequencies and their representativeness across the series. To obtain the sampling intervals, the Nyquist-Shannon theorem was applied. Weekly intervals accounted for 65% of cumulative frequencies for the three verified parameters, and the sampling intervals obtained by means of the characteristic frequencies were shown to be executable in the NRTWQM models for up to the 90% of cumulative frequency. For cumulative frequency above 90%, the intervals approach the daily values.

Introdução: Existem diferentes plicômetros destinados a mensurar dobras cutâneas. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre a confiabilidade de suas medidas. Objetivo: Avaliar a precisão e a exatidão de nove modelos utilizados para mensurar as dobras cutâneas. Métodos: Foram selecionados por conveniência nove equipamentos: Body Caliper, Innovare, Lange, Slim Guide, Neo Prime, Harpenden, Holtain, Premier e Digital. Utilizou-se um dispositivo desenvolvido com células de carga para mensurar a pressão das áres de contato nas amplitudes de 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 e 50 mm. Foram calculadas medidas de precisão (ETM-INTRA), exatidão (ETM-INTER) e concordância (Bland-Altman). Adotou-se as medidas do plicômetro Harpenden como padrão-ouro. Resultados: Observou-se precisão adequada nos plicômetros Holtain (0,35 ± 0,21), Harpenden (0,39 ± 0,35), Digital (0,49 ± 0,39), Premier (0,61 ± 0,52), Neo Prime (0,49 ± 0,39), Slim Guide (0,54 ± 0,41), Lange (0,75 ± 0,74) e Innovare (0,83 ± 0,63). Somente modelo Body Caliper não foi preciso (3,93 ± 2,53). Em relação à exatidão, somente os modelos Premier (3,61 ± 0,85), Digital (4,44 ± 3,26) e Innovare (4,79 ± 3,89) exibiram níveis aceitáveis de exatidão. Os demais equipamentos não se mostraram exatos (Slim Guide 15,03 ± 7,99; Holtain 17,05 ± 4,30; Neo Prime 23,82 ± 10,35; Lange 57,88 ± 9,47; Body Caliper 143,68 ± 33,03). Conclusão: Os modelos Harpenden, Innovare, Premier e Digital são os plicômetros que se mostraram mais precisos e exatos para mensurar dobras cutâneas. Technical Error of Measurement in Anthropometry: Analysis of Precision and Accuracy in Different PlicometersIntroduction: There are different calipers for measuring skinfolds. However, little is known about the reliability of its measures. Objective: To evaluate the precision and accuracy of nine skinfold calipers. Methods: Body Caliper, Innovare, Lange, Slim Guide, Neo Prime, Harpenden, Holtain, Premier, and Digital models were convenience selected. A device developed with load cells was used to measure jaw pressure at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 mm. Accuracy measurements (TEM-INTRA), reproducibility (TEM-INTER), and agreement (Bland-Altman analysis) were calculated. It was adopted as measures of the Harpenden Caliper as gold standard. Results: Adequate accuracy was observed in Holtain (0.35 ± 0.21), Harpenden (0.39 ± 0.35), Digital (0.49 ± 0.39), Premier (0.61 ± 0, 52), Neo Prime (0.49 ± 0.39), Slim Guide (0.54 ± 0.41), Lange (0.75 ± 0.74) and Innovare (0.83 ± 0.63) calipers. Only Body Caliper model was not accurate (3.93 ± 2.53). Regarding TEM-INTER, only the Premier (3.61 ± 0.85), Digital (4.44 ± 3.26) and Innovare (4.79 ± 3.89) models showed acceptable levels. The others equipment did not showed reproducibility (Slim Guide 15.03 ± 7.99; Holtain 17.05 ± 4.30; Neo Prime 23.82 ± 10.35; Lange (57.88 ± 9.47; Body Caliper 143.68 ± 33.03). Conclusion: The Harpenden, Innovare, Premier and Digital models showed to be most accurate and exact skinfold caliper for measuring skinfolds.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the presence of vocal symptoms and handicap in adults with cochlear implants, and verify the correlation with their self-perception of the voice quality. Methods: twenty-seven adults of both genders, with cochlear implants, in the age range of 19 to 57 years participated. The participants answered the self-assessment protocols Voice Handicap Index and Voice Symptom Scale. Furthermore, the participants answered an additional question about how they rated their voices. Results: for the Voice Handicap Index, the average score was 28.74, in total, and the average score for the Voice Symptom Scale was 29.22, in total. The correlation between the scores of the Voice Handicap Index and the self-perception of the voice showed that the worse the perception, the more handicap in every domain of the protocol. For the Voice Symptoms Scale, the results showed that there is a positive and moderate correlation between the self-perception of the voice and the total scores as well as for the impairment and emotional subscales. Conclusion: this study verified the presence of handicap and symptoms related to voice, mainly, regarding physical, functional and limitation aspects for the adults with cochlear implants. There is a positive and moderate correlation between the score of the protocols applied and self-evaluation of the vocal quality of the participants.

Poucos estudos têm relacionado a prática do treinamento de força (TF) e a melhora do perfil lipídico. Desta forma, o presente estudo teve como objetivo correlacionar as características antropométricas com os valores de perfil lipídico em praticantes de treinamento de força e sedentários. A amostra foi composta por 39 sujeitos do sexo masculino na faixa etária entre 20 e 40 anos. Os sujeitos foram divididos em dois grupos. O nível de sedentarismo foi avaliado usando o Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física (IPAQ) e controle de ingestão alimentar por meio de recordatório de 24 horas. A coleta de sangue para verificação do perfil lipídico (LDL-C, HDL-C, Colesterol Total e Triglicerídeo) foi realizada na região antecubital do braço. Para obtenção dos dados antropométricos (massa magra, percentual de gordura, somatório de dobras cutâneas) as dobras cutâneas foram medidas segundo a ISAK. Todas as análises estatísticas utilizaram o SPSS 18.0. Para análise do aspecto nutricional foi utilizado o software Diet Win 11.0. Não foram identificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos nas variáveis triglicerídeos, colesterol total, HDL-C e LDL-C. Todavia o grupo treinado apresentou 28% menos triglicerídeos e 11% menos HDL-C do que o grupo de sedentários. Houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos, onde o grupo treinado apresentou maior massa muscular e o grupo sedentário maior massa adiposa e somatório de dobras cutâneas. Conclui-se que sujeitos que praticam TF possuem um menor percentual de triglicerídeos e HDL-C circulantes quando comparado a sujeitos sedentários. ABSTRACT Correlation of blood lipid values and anthropometric parameters in strength training practitioners and sedentary subjects Few studies have linked the practice of strength training (ST) and the improvement of the lipid profile. Thus, the present study was to correlate the anthropometric characteristics with the lipid profile values in practitioners strength training and sedentary. The sample consisted of 39 male subjects aged between 20 and 40 years. The subjects were divided into two groups. The level of inactivity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and control of food intake by 24-hour recall. The blood test to check the lipid profile (LDL-C, HDL-C, total cholesterol and triglyceride) was performed in the antecubital region of the arm. For anthropometric data (lean mass, fat percentage, sum of skinfolds) skinfolds were measured according to ISAK. All statistical analyzes used SPSS 18.0. To analyze the nutritional aspect was used Diet Win 11.0. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in the variables triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C and LDL-C. But the trained group had 28% fewer triglycerides and 11% less HDL-C than the sedentary group. There were statistically significant differences between the groups, where the trained group showed increased muscle mass and the most sedentary group fat mass and sum of skinfolds. We conclude that subjects who practice TF have a lower percentage of circulating triglycerides and HDL-C compared to sedentary subjects.

Desde a sua criação, a função das Universidades tem evoluído: de uma instituição de ensino formal a uma agente criadora e modeladora de espaços, atraindo a população não acadêmica para o seu entorno e auxiliando na produção e orientação do uso do solo no qual está inserida. A presente pesquisa analisou parte do bairro viamonense Santa Isabel, especialmente a vila Jardim Universitário, localizado na divisa com o Campus do Vale da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), este em Porto Alegre (POA). Partindo da questão se o Campus do Vale influenciou na expansão da urbanização do seu entorno, os principais instrumentos de coleta de dados foram a entrevista e o questionário com os moradores locais, totalizando 354 pessoas. Segundo 62,7% desses, a UFRGS foi responsável pela expansão da urbanização. Embora quantitativamente os valores encontrados apontem essa responsabilidade ao campus, outros fatores também foram importantes, como o caso do valor do uso do solo. Em um primeiro momento o bairro se constituiu como uma alternativa viável para a residência, devido o preço dos lotes e a localização próxima à capital, beneficiando aqueles que trabalhavam em POA. Em um segundo momento, no final da década de 1970 – a partir da construção do Campus do Vale – observou-se a expansão da urbanização com o aumento da população e a redução de áreas vazias para dar espaço à construção civil. Em campo analisou-se a grande relação que há entre moradores e os pontos de serviços oferecidos nas dependências da universidade, como é o caso do terminal de ônibus, agências bancárias e farmácia, além de gerar empregos e valorizar os imóveis próximos, dada a importância do aluguel para os estudantes.

Introdução e objetivos: Um atleta, ao iniciar seu treinamento, com níveis de hidratação baixos, tende a ter seu desempenho reduzido, aumentar a frequência cardíaca e temperatura central, além de comprometimentos orgânicos mais sérios, como colapso respiratório, choque hipertérmico e morte. Assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi comparar os níveis de desidratação em homens treinados, nas modalidades bike indoor e musculação. Materiais e Métodos: A amostra contou com 19 indivíduos do sexo masculino, com idade entre 20 e 49 anos, divididos em dois grupos (10 no grupo aeróbio: bike indoor e 9 no grupo anaeróbio: musculação). Submetidos à avaliação antropométrica e coletas de urina pré e pós-intervenção para verificar cor, volume da urina e diferença da massa corporal total em pré e pós-teste. Resultados: o grupo anaeróbio ingeriu mais água durante a intervenção. O grupo anaeróbio apresentou volume urinário maior pós-teste quando comparado com o pré-teste. Diferenças estatisticamente significativa foram identificadas na massa magra, massa gorda e idade dos participantes. Houve correlação significativa para massa corporal com consumo de água no grupo aeróbio. Conclusões: sujeitos treinados aerobiamente apresentam nível maior de desidratação, mesmo adaptados à modalidade e com consumo de água durante a intervenção. Desta forma, se expostos ao teste com restrição hídrica, seu nível de desidratação teria resultado em valores mais significativos, podendo levá-los a perdas consideradas graves. ABSTRACT Analysis of dehydration in subject trained endurance and strength on a class of indoor bike Introduction and Purpose: With inadequate fluid intake, an athlete, starting an exercise with already low levels of hydration, tends to be reduced in performance, increase heart rate and core temperature and more serious organic impairment, such as respiratory failure, shock and death hyperthermic. The study wanted to assess the level of dehydration in trained aerobic exercise and anaerobic exercise in trained another group. Materials and Methods: 19 men was invited for convenience, aged between 20 and 49 years, able to test: two indoor bike classes, 50 minutes each, with water consumption and temperature control with air conditioning to 18 degrees. To anthropometric measurements, weight measurements and urine collections of pre and post-class indoor bike were submitted to verify color, quantity of urine and difference of total body mass in pre-and post-test. Results: Anaerobic group consumed more water during class; the anaerobic group had urinary volume greater than pre-post test. This study shows significantly different results in the variables: lean mass, fat mass and age of participants. There was a significant correlation to body mass with water consumption in the aerobic group. Conclusions: aerobically trained subjects exhibit a greater level of dehydration, even adapted to mode and water consumption, and if they had been exposed to the test fluid restriction, their level of dehydration would result in more significant amounts, which can lead to losses considered serious.

A presbiacusia pode ser um fator de limitação do idoso, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento de alguns distúrbios de ordem emocional e favorecendo o isolamento devido à dificuldade de comunicação com o meio social em que vive. Objetivo: analisar, por meio de revisão da literatura científica, a associação entre perda auditiva e baixa autoestima no idoso. Método: foi realizada uma revisão de literatura a cerca de trabalhos científicos que abordassem a perda auditiva em idosos, com seleção das publicações julgadas relevantes. Conclusão: existe associação entre a perda auditiva e a baixa autoestima em idosos e quanto maior o grau da perda auditiva mais evidente podem ser os sintomas.

Resumo:OBJETIVO:descrever a auto-avaliação de otorrinolaringologistas e fonoaudiólogos do Distrito Federal acerca do conhecimento em relação ao implante coclear.MÉTODOS:estudo transversal e analítico com coleta de dados obtidos por meio da aplicação de questionários on-line. Participaram do estudo 73 fonoaudiólogos e 33 otorrinolaringologistas que responderam questões acerca do conhecimento do Implante Coclear na cidade de Brasília-Distrito Federal.RESULTADOS:31% (n=22) dos fonoaudiólogos acreditam ter conhecimento suficiente no que se refere ao procedimento cirúrgico, enquanto que no grupo dos otorrinolaringologistas esse número chegou a 59,4% (n=19), apresentando significância estatística entre os grupos (p

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi definir, através da análise da influência de fatores preditores como clima, relevo, uso do solo e influência antrópica, um mapa de risco de incêndios florestais com a utilização de técnicas de geoprocessamento. De acordo com os resultados, nenhuma das classes preditoras explicou, de forma isolada, a espacialização das ocorrências. Todavia este estudo conseguiu retratar a influência dos fatores sobre as ocorrências de incêndios florestais. Os mapas gerados apresentaram satisfatória eficiência na predição de incêndios na região de estudo.

Equações de predição para taxa metabólica basal (TMB) são amplamente utilizadas para prescrição dietética, porém podem apresentar valores diferentes daqueles medidos por calorimetria indireta (CI), principalmente, em indivíduos obesos. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar os valores de TMB por meio da CI em indivíduos obesos de grau I e eutróficos e comparar com os resultados obtidos pelas equações de predição, a fim de identificar se existe discrepância nos valores obtidos entre o medido pela CI e o estimado pelas equações. O estudo avaliou 40 homens entre 18 e 30 anos, sendo 20 eutróficos e 20 obesos grau I. Foi verificado o grau de concordância entre as equações e CI por meio da metodologia sugerida por Bland e Altman (1986). Os resultados mostram a variação entre os métodos de predição de -19,6% a -9,1%, quando comparadas a CI nos sujeitos obesos, e de -4,2% a 4,4% nos eutróficos. Em ambos os grupos, a equação que mais se aproxima da estimativa real é a de Miflin St. Jeor (1990), com -9,1% de diferença da CI nos sujeitos obesos e 0,9% nos eutróficos. Desta forma, o presente estudo indica a utilização da equação de Mifflin St. Jeor (1990) para estimar a TMB. Entretanto, é fundamental que se consiga medir a TMB de sujeitos obesos de maneira mais precisa e segura, para melhor conduzir a intervenção baseada em exercícios físicos e boa alimentação.

The need to study cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has become more and more relevant as their prevalence has increased over the years. An intact endothelial wall is essential to vascular health. Certain factors are responsible for maintaining this tissue intact, including nitric oxide (NO), which provokes dilation of blood vessels in response to shear stress. Expression of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) enzyme, which produces nitric oxide in response to increases in blood flow, is of fundamental importance to maintenance of the vascular system. When this enzyme is inhibited, nitric oxide production is reduced, causing endothelial dysfunction. Since C-reactive protein inhibits production of nitric oxide by the eNOS enzyme, it is one of the causes of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular events. The objective of the present study was to review scientific articles in the literature related to the subject 'inflammatory markers and endothelial function'. A wide-ranging review of the current literature was conducted, using systematic analysis of bibliographic references indexed in PubMed, Scielo, Medline and LILACS database, for the years 1992 to 2013. The studies reviewed show that increases in inflammation causes reductions in NO and increases in cardiovascular events. Increased inflammation is associated with higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

Introduction-The otoacoustic emissions test has been highlighted by thepossibility of detecting early cochlear changes resulting from exposureto noise, not identifiedby audiometry.Objective: To evaluate the distortion product otoacoustic emissions innormal-hearing workers exposed to occupational noise.Method: This was a cross-sectionalstudy in steel mills of the Federal District, in which it was evaluated by means of productotoacoustic emissions Distortion, workers of both sexes, aged between 18 and 35 years,thresholds audibility at or below 25 dB HL without hearing impairment.Results: We foundsignificant changes in otoacoustic emissionsin both ears. In the amplitude and signal/noiseratio was observed that the higher the frequency the lower the averages found in otoacousticemissions. How often is the worst records of 6 KHz.Conclusion: The otoacoustic emissionsdistortion product in normal-hearing workers reveal cochlear changes could detect theappearance of the lesion in outer hair cells.

Chronic suppurative otitis media, with or without cholesteatoma, may lead to erosion of the ossicles and discontinuity of the ossicular chain. In incomplete ossicular discontinuity (IOD), partial erosion of the ossicles occurs, but some sound transmission is noted throughout the ossicular chain. High-frequency conductive hearing loss (HfCHL) has been considered a hallmark of incomplete ossicular discontinuity. This study aims to evaluate the use of HfCHL as a preoperative predictor of IOD in patients with non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media. The HfCHL test was defined as the preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) at 4 kHz minus the average of the ABG at 0.25 and 0.5 kHz. The test was applied in 328 patients before surgery and compared to intraoperative findings as the gold standard. At surgery, 201 (61.3%) patients had an intact ossicular chain, 44 (13.4%) had a complete ossicular discontinuity, and 83 (25.3%) exhibited an IOD. The best cutoff level was calculated as 10 dB. The HfCHL test to diagnose IOD had a sensitivity of 83% and a specificity of 92% with a post-test probability of 78% and a likelihood ratio of 10.2. We concluded that the HfCHL test is highly effective in predicting IOD in patients with non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media and that it should be used routinely as a screening test prior to surgery.

Olimiar auditivo nem sempre prediz o desempenho em ambientes com redundância extrínseca reduzida. OBJETIVO: Investigar o relato de dificuldades de comunicação de adultos com audiograma normal e verificar o quadro subjacente por meio de avaliações comportamental e eletrofisiológica. MÉTODO: Estudo caso-controle de indivíduos com limiares normais, distribuídos em dois grupos: grupo estudo, 10 adultos com queixas auditivas de comunicação e grupo controle, 10 adultos, sem queixas. Foi medida a frequência em que os participantes apresentam dificuldades de comunicação e realizados testes de fala no silêncio e no ruído, audiometria e potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico. RESULTADOS: O grupo estudo se diferenciou estatisticamente do grupo controle apenas nos escores de dificuldades de comunicação. Foi constatada uma correlação positiva entre os limiares tonais e os escores no autorrelato de dificuldade. CONCLUSÃO: A presença de queixa auditiva na ausência de alterações no audiograma não esteve associada a diferença no desempenho no reconhecimento de fala no ruído, nem nas demais avaliações. Com base na análise de correlação, observou-se que, quanto mais elevados os limiares auditivos, maiores os escores no relato de dificuldades auditivas relacionadas às situações de comunicação, mesmo os limiares variando de 0 a 25 dB.Hearing thresholds are not always predictive of performance in environments with reduced extrinsic redundancy. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the communication disorders reported by adults with normal hearing, and to assess their underlying conditions through behavioral and electrophysiological testing. METHOD: This case control study enrolled 20 adults with normal hearing thresholds and divided them into two groups: a case group with 10 adults with hearing impairment-related communication disorders and a control group with 10 adults with normal hearing. The frequency of occurrence of communication difficulties was recorded during speech recognition tests run in quiet and noisy conditions, audiometry, and auditory evoked brainstem potential testing. RESULTS: Case group subjects differed statistically from controls only in self-reported scores of hearing impairment. The groups did not differ in the other ratings. A positive correlation was found between hearing thresholds and scores on self-reported impairment. CONCLUSION: The combination of hearing complaints and unaltered audiograms was not correlated with differences in performance in speech recognition testing in noisy conditions or in the remaining evaluations. Correlation analysis showed that the higher the pure tone thresholds, the greater were the reported communication difficulties, even in thresholds between 0 and 25 dB.

O presente artigo pautou-se na realização de um inventário arbóreo com a incorporação dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas. A área de estudo corresponde ao campus Santa Apolónia, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança (IPB), em Bragança, Portugal. Além do inventário foram realizadas recomendações e também a espacialização dos indivíduos levantados e, em caráter individual, das espécies de maior ocorrência. A utilização dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas foi uma ferramenta fundamental de suporte para o inventário urbano realizado. Com as características levantadas e a espacialização realizada pôde-se perceber a necessidade de elaboração de um plano de arborização para a área do campus em estudo. Desta forma, medidas relacionadas ao manejo das espécies podem ser aplicadas de maneira eficiente.This article aimed to realize a forest inventory with the incorporation of Geographic Information Systems. The study was carried out at the Santa Apolonia campus, Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Bragança (IPB), Portugal. In addition of the inventory, it was realized recommendations and the spatial distribution of the individuals surveyed, and individually, the most common species. The use of Geographic Information Systems was a key tool to support the urban inventory accomplished. From the characteristics and spatial distribution can be realized the need to prepare an arborization plan for the area in the campus in study. Thus, measures related to the management of the species can be efficiently applied.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of the biliopancreatic diversion surgery with duodenojejunal exclusion in combination with truncal vagotomy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with overweight or class I or II obesity. METHODS: The study included ten patients with T2DM and class I or II obesity or overweight who were subjected to biliopancreatic diversion with duodenojejunal exclusion in combination with truncal vagotomy. The blood glucose levels during the pre- and postoperative periods were compared using the Friedman test. The significance level adopted was 5%. RESULTS: There were significant differences between preoperative and postoperative blood glucose levels at three months (p=0.01), six months (p=0.001) and 12 months (p=0.001). There was also a significant difference between one month postoperative blood glucose and six months postoperative blood glucose (p=0.01). Glycosylated hemoglobin levels decreased in 80% of patients, there was marked improvement in their lipid profiles, and the average BMI reduction was 7.0±1.5 kg/m² at 12 months after the surgery. CONCLUSION: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus associated with class I/II obesity or overweight, performing biliopancreatic diversion with duodenojejunal exclusion in combination with truncal vagotomy resulted in glycemic control, reduction of excess weight, and improvement of lipid profile 12 months after the surgery.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia da operação de derivação biliopancreática com exclusão duodeno-jejunal associada com vagotomia troncular em doentes com diabetes tipo 2 com sobrepeso ou obesidade classe I ou II. MÉTODOS: Foram estudados dez doentes com diabetes melito tipo 2 e sobrepeso ou obesidade grau I ou II submetidos à derivação biliopancreática com exclusão duodeno-jejunal associada à vagotomia troncular. Os valores de glicemia no pré e no pós-operatório foram comparados pelo teste de Friedman. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. RESULTADOS: Houve diferença significante (p=0,01) nas glicemias pré e pós-operatórias de três meses, de seis meses (p=0,001) e de 12 meses (p=0,001). Houve diferença significante entre a glicemia pós-operatória de um mês e glicemia pós-operatória de seis meses (p=0,01). O nível de hemoglobina glicosilada reduziu-se em 80% dos doentes, houve melhora acentuada do perfil lipídico e a média da redução do IMC foi de 7,0±1,5 kg/m² após 12 meses da operação. CONCLUSÃO: No paciente com diabetes melito tipo 2 associado com sobrepeso ou obesidade grau I/II, a realização da derivação biliopancreática com exclusão duodeno-jejunal associada à vagotomia troncular proporcionou controle glicêmico, redução do excesso de peso e melhora do perfil lipídico após 12 meses da operação.

Os jovens estão cada vez mais expostos à música alta, que pode prejudicar a audição. O teste das Emissões Otoacústicas, por ser mais sensível à exposição ao ruído, permite detectar precocemente alterações cocleares. OBJETIVO: Investigar a prevalência de lesão das células ciliadas externas por meio do teste de emissões otoacústicas em uma amostra de estudantes. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Foram realizados os testes de emissões otoacústicas por estímulo transiente e por produto de distorção em 134 indivíduos. Os exames foram analisados de acordo com o critério "passa/falha". Tipo de estudo: Estudo seccional descritivo de prevalência. RESULTADOS: Dos 134 participantes, 80,6% apresentaram emissões otoacústicas transiente alteradas, sendo a maioria do gênero masculino; 97,8% apresentaram emissões otoacústicas produto de distorção alterada e 79,9% apresentaram alteração tanto em transiente quanto em produto de distorção, sendo a maioria do gênero masculino e, ainda, 94,0% relataram fazer uso de fones de ouvido; e 82,8% declararam frequentar lugar com música amplificada. CONCLUSÃO: A alta prevalência de testes alterados pode indicar precocemente uma disfunção coclear e, pelo alto número de participantes que relatou exposição à música alta, há a suspeita de que esse hábito pode estar provocando as alterações cocleares.Exposure to loud music is increasing among young people, and so could be the number of hearing impairment cases in this population. Otoacoustic emission tests are sensitive in capturing the effects of exposure to noise, and allow the detection of early cochlear disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to look into the prevalence rates of injuries to outer hair cells in a population of students through otoacoustic emission testing. MATERIALS AND METHOD: One-hundred and thirty-four subjects were submitted to transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emission tests. Subjects were assessed on a "pass/fail" scale. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study on prevalence rates. RESULTS: More than four fifths (80.6%) of the 134 subjects had altered transient otoacoustic emissions, most of whom were males; 97.8% had altered distortion product otoacoustic emissions and 79.9% had altered test results in both transient evoked and distortion product OAEs; most were males; 94.0% reported they used earphones; and 82.8% stated they frequented places where loud music was played. CONCLUSION: The high prevalence rates of altered test results seem to indicate the presence of early cochlear disorders in the studied subjects. A significant number of subjects reported exposure to loud music, a habit that may be conducive to the onset of cochlear disorders.

O "Rugby" é um esporte bastante popular internacionalmente e em franca ascensão no Brasil. É caracterizado pela existência de duas posições táticas básicas ("forwards" e "backs"), cujos atletas apresentam demandas funcionais e características físicas distintas. Embora a literatura internacional apresente um número interessante de referências acerca do perfil antropométrico e fisiológico destes atletas, pouca atenção tem sido despendida aos atletas brasileiros. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar o desempenho de 20 jogadores amadores de "Rugby" submetidos à ergoespirometria, teste de Wingate e Dinamometria isocinética bem como a comparação entre "backs" (n = 10) e "forwards" (n = 10) para verificar possíveis diferenças entre as posições táticas. Para determinação dos valores de VO2 e VCO2 foi utilizado um analisador de gases computadorizado (CPX-D; MedGraphics Cardiorespiratory Diagnostic Systems) para variáveis de força um dinamômetro isocinético Cybex Norm (Lumex & Co., Ronkonkoma, USA) e para comparações de composição corporal foi aplicada a técnica de cinco componentes da ISAK. A comparação entre os dados foi verificada por meio do teste t de Student para amostras independentes, sendo que para todas as variáveis foi adotado um índice de significância de p < 0,05. Os nossos resultados mostram uma diferença significativa entre "backs" e "forwards' nas variáveis VO2max (47,8 ± 4,5 e 38,8 ± 5,5 ml.kg-1.min-1) - 2º limiar ventilatório (38,3 ± 3,0 e 31,6 ± 4,2 ml.kg-1.min-1) - potência média (7,5 ±0,6 e 6,3 ±1,1 W.kg-1) e trabalho total (225,7 ± 18,4 e 187,9 ± 31,7 J.kg-1) - massa corporal (78,5 ± 9,5 e 101,6 ± 12,6 kg) Massa Adiposa (24,7 ± 3,2 e 29,7 ± 4,6%) Massa Muscular (48,7 ± 4,2 e 44,5 ± 3,4%) respectivamente (p < 0,05). Sendo assim, evidenciamos a existência de diferenças significativas em algumas das variáveis medidas entre atletas de "Rugby' conforme sua função no jogo. Essa evidência mostra que mesmo os atletas sendo de nível amador, as características fisiológicas, antropométricas e mecânicas são semelhantes quando comparadas aos jogadores de nível profissional.Rugby is a very popular sport around the world and on the rise in Brazil. It is characterized by the existence of two basic tactics positions (forwards and backs), in which athletes have distinguishing functional demands and physical characteristics. Although the international literature presents a number of interesting data about the physiological and anthropometric profile of these athletes, little attention has been spent to Brazilian athletes. This study aimed to verify the performance of 20 amateur rugby players and to compare the aerobic power (VO2max), anaerobic endurance and isokinetic strength in backs (n = 10) and forwards (n = 10). A computerized gas analyzer (CPX-D - MGC) was used to determine VO2 and VCO2. A Wingate test was used to determine the anaerobic endurance. An isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex Norm) was used to measure isokinetic strength. The body composition was evaluated according to five components of ISAK. The data were compared through Student t test for independent samples (p < 0.05). Our results show a significant difference between backs and forwards in the variables VO2max (47.8 &± 4.5 and 38.8 &± 5.5 ml.kg-1.min-1); 2nd ventilatory threshold (38.3 &± 3.0 and 31.6 &± 4.2 ml.kg-1.min-1); average power (7.5 &± 0.6 and 6.3 &± 1.1 W.kg-1); total work (225.7 &± 18.4 and 187.9 &± 31.7 J.kg-1); body weight (78.5 &± 9.5 and 101.6 &± 12.6 kg); fat mass (24.7 &± 3 , 2 and 29.7 &± 4.6%) and muscle mass (48.7 &± 4.2 and 44.5 &± 3.4%) respectively (p < 0.05). Thus, there are significant differences, related to the tactic position and function, in Rugby athletes. Furthermore our results shows that even at the amateur level athletes, physiological and anthropometric characteristics are similar when compared to professional level players.

Ear diseases are illnesses which represent a relevant group of morbidity. Otitis media, for instance, still is a public health problem today. OBJECTIVE: To correlate hospital morbidity of ear diseases according to data from the Information Technology Department of the Public Health Care System -SUS (DATASUS), through the Hospital Information System (SIH) with the Human Development Index (IDH) from each unit of the federation. To assess the use of this official data in the creation of otologic public health care policies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brazilian states were classified according to their respective IDH values. The percentage population from each state was calculated in relation to the entire population of the country, as well as the percentage of hospital admission caused by ear diseases (SIH) for each state in relation to their total number. The hospital admissions from each state were correlated with their respective IDH values. RESULTS: The state of São Paulo, the third largest IDH was responsible for 38.82% of hospital admissions caused by ear diseases, although its population represents 21.64% of the national population. States with lower IDH had lower hospital admission rates for ear diseases. CONCLUSION: SIH, a DATASUS tool, even with limitations, can be an instrument used to create public policies concerning ear diseases.As doenças do ouvido são enfermidades que representam um grupo relevante de morbidade. A otite média, por exemplo, ainda hoje, é um problema de saúde pública. OBJETIVO: Correlacionar a morbidade hospitalar das doenças otológicas segundo dados disponibilizados pelo Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS), pelo do Sistema de Informação Hospitalar(SIH) com o Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH) de cada unidade federativa. Avaliar a utilização destes dados oficiais na elaboração de políticas públicas otológicas. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Os Estados brasileiros foram classificados de acordo com os respectivos valores de IDH. Foi calculado o percentual da população de cada Estado em relação à população total do país, bem como o percentual de internações hospitalares por doenças otológicas(SIH) para cada Estado em relação ao número total das mesmas. Correlacionaram-se internações hospitalares de cada unidade federativa com seus respectivos valores de IDH. RESULTADOS: O Estado de São Paulo, terceiro maior IDH, foi responsável por 38,82% das internações hospitalares de causa otológica, apesar de sua população representar 21,64% da população nacional. Estados com menor IDH apresentaram menores taxas de internação hospitalar por doenças otológicas. CONCLUSÃO: O SIH, instrumento do DATASUS, mesmo com limitações, pode ser instrumento na elaboração de políticas públicas otológicas.

RESUMOA história da cidade de Viçosa/MG foi marcada por uma ocupação resultante de processos construtivos sem preocupação com a legislação ambiental e com a carência de profissionais qualificados. A aprovação das leis encabeçadas pelo Plano Diretor de Viçosa e a participação da UFV, significam importantes avanços. Porém, Viçosa ainda possui dificuldades na aplicação das leis no planejamento urbano. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a ocupação das margens de um trecho do ribeirão São Bartolomeu na área urbana do município de Viçosa/MG. Para essa pesquisa seguimos quatro etapas: i) levantamento da legislação municipal e federal sobre uso e ocupação do solo; ii) georeferenciamento de imagem Ikonos da área estudada ; iii) mapeamento de áreas de preservação permanente de acordo com as legislações vigente ; e iv) obtenção de coordenadas geográficas com auxílio do instrumento GPS de navegação, para verificação das ocupações ilegais em áreas de APP. Como resultados, notamos uma intensa inadimplência em relação ao cumprimento das leis, causando fortes impactos socioambientais presentes em toda a cidade.Palavras-chave: Geografia, Geoprocessamento, áreas de preservação permanente.ABSTRACTThe history of Viçosa city was marked by an ocupation that didn't take into consideration the environmental legislation and with few qualified professionals in the construction of buildings. The appoval of laws headed by the director plan of Viçosa and the participation of the UFV (FUV) , means an important progress. However, Viçosa still has difficulties to enforce the application of the laws in the urban planning.The goal of this work was to analize the ocupation of the Saint Bartolomeu river's shore at the urban part of the city of Viçosa / MG. For this research we followed four steps: i) Survey of the municipal and federal legislation about the use of the soil; II) Geo referential of ikonos image of the studied area; iii) Put into a map the areas of permanent preservation according to the current legislation; and IV) Acquirement of geographic bearings with the help of the GPS of navigation,to verify the ilegal occupation at the APP areas. As results, we notice an intense disrespect towards the ambiental laws, causing strong social environmental impacts in the whole city.Keywords: Geography, GIS

The works about soil's erosion have been object of wide studies in the district ofViçosa. It is characterized by hilly and inadequate occupational soils management thatincrease occurrence of soil erosion by gullies and ravine in amphitheater form. The presentwork tried to monitor a hillside in the urban area of the municipal district.

The understanding of the relief goes by something larger than the observation at the way, understanding several other factors as climate, soil types and vegetable covering. However, the forms of the relief interfere as one of the main components of the atmosphere,being necessary its knowledge for the understanding of the dynamics of the area research object.The agreement of the relief passes for something more important that the comment of its form, understanding several other factors as climate, soil types and vegetal covering. However, the forms of the relief are inserting as the one of the main components of theenvironment, being necessary its knowledge for the agreement of the dynamic of the area research object.This knowledge is indispensable, because it is impossible to repress the occupation expansion of the spaces and much less to restraint environmental impacts caused by the men and the nature is not capable to regenerate all of the damaged spaces in a short space of time.Many of the inhabited spaces are fruits of segregation, which would be consequence of the exclusion that the effective economical system imposes to the people and spaces. On the other hand, the environmental problems are not correlated only with outlying neighborhoods, but they come very visible in places where constructions of high purchasing power prevail. But, one thing we can do is to prevent, the areas that are not busy, because it is viable naturally,environmentally and less expensive economically speaking. It is in this context, which the study of the mass movements can be of vital importance. The present work seeks to characterize the mass movements that happen in the urban area of Viçosa, with the objective to relate and to compare the rising done in the urban area of the municipal district at the scale 1: 5000 for Vieira in the year of 2000, in order to verify the evolution of the areas studied by the referred author, being analyzed these progressed or some interventions were suffered.

Esta pesquisa realizou um estudo sobre a viabilidade da utilização de um software livre de Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIG) pelo professor de Geografia. Mapas temáticos podem ser criados a partir de tais programas e facilitar o ensino em sala. Foram levantados dados para a construção de um mapa temático sobre deslizamento de terra, que fez parte de um dos projetos do Programa Institucional de Bolsa de Iniciação à Docência (PIBID) de Geografia na Escola Municipal Ministro Edmundo Lins, em Viçosa-MG. O programa escolhido foi o “TerraView”, criado pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE). Esse software foi estudado para a aquisição de informações sobre o mesmo e posterior manipulação do programa. O mapa temático apresentado aos educandos na sala despertou a atenção dos alunos, principalmente pelo espaço representado (parte da cidade de Viçosa-MG) fazer parte da vivência cotidiana do aluno e se mostrar como uma novidade diante deles. Porém, ficou evidente que o software apresenta problemas que devem ser sanados e não é tão simples de ser manuseado, como aponta alguns trabalhos. As tecnologias não substituem o professor, mas pode auxiliá-lo em aula. Assim, é necessário que esses educadores sejam capacitados e qualificados para manipular tais programas.

A prevalência de sobrepeso na população brasileira, com 20 ou mais anos de idade, é de 41% em homens e 40% em mulheres, e de obesidade é de 8,9% para homens e 13,1% para mulheres. Esta constatação tem gerado preocupação a respeito das conseqüências provocadas por essa doença. As equações de predição da taxa metabólica basal (TMB) são utilizadas na prática clínica, a fim de aperfeiçoar a prescrição de dietas e, conseqüentemente, quantidade de exercício necessária para a diminuição da massa adiposa. O presente estudo analisou as principais equações de predição da TMB frente ao padrão ouro, a Calorimetria Indireta (CI), em 26 obesos de grau 1 de ambos os sexos, a fim de verificar a validade das equações nessa população. Nossos resultados mostram que indivíduos obesos têm uma TMB significativamente menor quando analisada por CI, quando comparado com as equações de predição. Essa diferença varia entre 22 e 16%, valores que podem influenciar diretamente o resultado das intervenções para perdade massa corporal. O grau de concordância entre os métodos foi verificado usando o procedimento sugerido por Bland e Altman, (1986), cujos resultados mostram a variação entre os métodos de predição de -21,6 a -17,7%, quando comparados a CI. Desta forma, os resultados mostram que a população de obesos de grau 1 deve passar por análises apropriadas para determinação da TMB, e as equações de predição devem ser específicas para melhor intervenção nas diferentes populações.

Os perfis longitudinais de rios são sensíveis a movimentações tectônicas causando alterações no nível de base. Devido a isto, verifica-se incisão fluvial a montante de compartimentos abatidos e agradação a jusante de compartimentos levantados. Os canais fl uviais são dinâmicos e se modificam através da incisão e da agradação periódicas, o estudo destes processos reveste-se de grande importância na compreensão das alterações do relevo. A formação de vales encaixados com perfis típicos em V, ou o aparecimento de trechos de agradação pode ter origem em causas tectônicas, ou outras. Hack (1973) propôs um índice (stream-gradient index) para detectar estas alterações em cursos fluviais, decorrentes de mudanças no substrato geológico, aporte de carga, ou tectonismo. O stream-gradient index, ou simplesmente índice SL, relação declive (slope) vs. comprimento do curso (length). O presente trabalho objetiva identificar rupturas de declive, num trecho do rio Zêzere, afluente do rio Tejo. O rio Zêzere corre num vale encaixado no interior da Cordilheira Central Portuguesa. Para identificar as roturas de declive utilizou-se o perfil longitudinal, índice de Hack, SL (slope VS. Lenght). Como resultado foi possível detectar locais onde sofreram abatimentos tectônicos, principalmente entre Pedrógão e Bogas de Baixo, foi possível também observar a influência de processos de erosão diferencial e de soleiras Quartzíticas de Farjão a Sarzedas na regularização dos processos tectônicos a montante daqueles níveis de base locais.
