Abstract

We synthesized biocompatible NiFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters below 10 nm by coating their surface with a tartrate ligand, which interestingly give rise to photoluminescence covering the entire visible region. The analyses with various spectroscopic tools reveal that the reason behind the unique fluorescence properties of functionalized NiFe2O4 NPs is ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transition from the highest occupied energy level of tartrate ligand to the lowest unoccupied energy level of Ni2+ and d–d transitions centered over Ni2+ ions in the NPs. These fluorescent NPs are also found to be suitable for cell imaging. Moreover, the functionalized NiFe2O4 NPs show a good catalytic activity on biologically and environmentally toxic pigments, such as bilirubin and methylene blue which leads to their wide application towards therapeutics and waste water treatment. We believe that the developed multifunctional NiFe2O4 NPs would stimulate the opportunities for advanced biomedical applications.

a b s t r a c t Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a highly versatile tool to prepare functional thin film coatings. In our study we utilised a Q-switched CO2 laser with a pulse duration � ≈ 300 ns, a laser wavelength � = 10.59 m, a repetition frequency frep = 800 Hz and a peak power Ppeak = 15 kW to deposit crystalline anatase thin films on carbon fibre fabrics. For this purpose, preparatory experiments were performed on silicon substrates to optimise the anatase deposition conditions including the influence of different substrate temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Processing parameters were then transferred to deposit anatase on carbon fibres. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analyses, Raman spectroscopy and tactile profilometry were used to characterise the samples and to reveal the formation of phase pure anatase without the occurrence of a secondary rutile phase. Methanol conversion test were used to prove the photocatalytic activity of the coated carbon fibres. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Holes with diameters of about 400 µm have been laser trepanned in Ti6Al4V and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) thin sheets with a thickness of 0.5 mm. A commercial CO2 laser (SM1500E, FEHA LaserTec, Germany) and a novel Q-switched CO2 laser (µ-storm, IAI, Netherlands) were used as radiation sources. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and replicas of the processed holes were used to investigate the influence of the CO2 laser pulse parameters (e.g. pulse energy, duration and peak power) on the processing quality. It was shown that melt formation and high temperature oxidation reactions of Ti6Al4V during thermal laser processing were reduced significantly by using short and high intense Q-switched CO2 laser pulses. During trepanning of CFRP heat affected zones resulting from the extremely different thermal properties (melting and vaporisation temperature, heat conduction) of the reinforcing carbon fibres and the polymer matrix were reduced significantly by using the Q-switched CO2 laser. The results demonstrate that Ti6Al4V and CFRP can be processed very precisely with CO2 laser radiation and air as processing gas without melt formation and thermal damage.

Abstract

Single carbon fibres were 360° coated with zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films by pulsed laser deposition using a Q-switched CO laser with a pulse duration τ ≈ 300 ns, a wavelength λ = 10.59 μm, a repetition frequency f = 800 Hz and a peak power P = 15 kW in combination with a 3-step-deposition technique. In a first set of experiments, the deposition process was optimised by investigating the crystallinity of ZnO films on silicon and polished stainless steel substrates. Here, the influence of the substrate temperature and of the oxygen partial pressure of the background gas were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses. ZnO coated carbon fibres and conductive glass sheets were used to prepare photo anodes for dye-sensitised solar cells in order to investigate their suitability for energy conversion devices. To obtain a deeper insight of the electronic behaviour at the interface between ZnO and substrate I–V measurements were performed., The European Commission is thankfully acknowledged for financial support of the SMILEY project under Contract No. FP7-NMP-2012-SMALL-6-310637. Abstract

Abstract Background Elevated blood lactate levels were reported as useful predictors of clinical outcome and mortality in critically ill patients. To identify higher-risk patients, this investigation evaluated the relationship between patient mortality and admission lactate levels during the management of non-trauma critically ill patients in the emergency department (ED). Methods In this prospective, single centre observational study in a German university ED, all adult patients who were admitted to the ED resuscitation room were evaluated between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2015. Blood samples for blood gas analysis, including lactate levels, were obtained immediately at admission. Study endpoint was 30-day mortality. Results During the study period, 532 patients were admitted to the resuscitation room of the ED. The data of 523 patients (98.3%) were available. The overall 30-day mortality was 34.2%.
